“Together, we grow and prosper.” My one-year anniversary as President/CEO of the Thibodaux Chamber of Commerce will be Sept. 30, 2017. It’s hard to believe that so much time has passed, but I look around and feel immensely blessed for having been given this opportunity. Every day, I am inspired by the hard work and dedication of our team, which includes the board, ambassadors and Chamber members. They genuinely support our mission to promote economic prosperity by connecting businesses with the community, which happens on a daily basis as residents and visitors to Thibodaux are referred to our business members. Over the Chamber’s 51 years of service, countless individuals have given of their time, talent and expertise. It is through them that we have grown into the outstanding organization that we are today. As a Chamber of Commerce, we are deeply grateful to all who have served or currently serve our growing organization. It is no secret that these are tough economic times filled with uncertainty and doubt, but our community is resilient and our leaders are committed. We are continually looking for opportunities that lead to success — a chance to make a difference. In fact, these are the times when new and creative ways of doing business can be cultivated. Such developments during tough times strengthen our business community, and a strong business community is a catalyst to a dynamic area in which we can live and work. To help businesses in these times, our Chamber has, over the past year, revamped several events, added more educational sessions, taken a more proactive role in being a voice for our members and strengthened our existing business plan. We are excited about these changes and about bringing fresh ideas to our members. We remain committed to expanding our local economy, promoting tourism, partnering with local economic development officials, and organizing and promoting community-wide events that promote the warm personal climate that makes Thibodaux such a wonderful place to live, play and do business. Bienvenu! Thibodaux is nicknamed “Queen City of Lafourche,” and for good reason. Located at the northern end of Lafourche Parish, the city sits atop a culturally rich land that invites its residents and visitors to explore its authentic Cajun heritage. Cajun music jam sessions played by the award-winning Cajun Music Preservation Society can be heard on Wednesday nights at the Venetian in historic downtown Thibodaux. Platters piled high with fried shrimp, catfish and soft-shelled crabs are house specialties at local restaurants like Politz’s, Spahr’s and Bubba’s II. No matter where you choose to experience the culture, you’re bound to meet a room full of friendly faces and enjoy the best food south of I-10. Thought to be a quiet college town – Thibodaux is the proud home of Nicholls State University - a weekday drive along Canal Boulevard says otherwise. In recent years, North Canal Boulevard has seen steady growth as national retailers and restaurants like Academy Sports and Outdoors and Santa Fe Cattle Co. have moved into the community. National and community banks are cashing in on the growth as well, with new and renovated branches now adding a modern architectural vibe to Thibodaux’s expanding commerce center. Cajuns are known for being hard-working

people. The residents of Thibodaux are no different. While Nicholls and Thibodaux Regional Medical Center remain the city’s largest employers in the education and medical fields, respectively, small businesses give Thibodaux the Southern charm that makes it one of Smithsonian Magazine’s “best small towns to visit.” Thibodaux is becoming an increasingly popular choice for young couples seeking a safe, developing community in which to work, live and raise a family. Mayor Tommy Eschete says …
Thibodaux’s retail community remains healthy Thibodaux’s population sits at just over 14,600. This number hasn’t changed much since the last proper census. Travel about two miles outside the city limits, though, and the population more than doubles. This number has changed in recent years, thanks to increased interest in Thibodaux as a favorable community in which to live, work and raise a family. It is this larger population in surrounding neighborhoods that has enticed major retailers like Academy Sports and Outdoors to commit to doing business in Thibodaux, attracting smaller national chains and local companies and restaurants to do the same. Although 2017 hasn’t been a standout year for economic growth, Mayor Tommy Eschete says Thibodaux’s retail community remains healthy. For Thibodaux, a healthy retail community equates to an economy with a pulse. “Outside of top employers like Nicholls State University, the school board, Thibodaux Regional Medical Center and even John Deere, a lot of the employment opportunities – if they’re not in the professional field – are limited to retail positions in management or sales,” says Eschete, who will begin his eighth year as Thibodaux’s mayor in December 2017. “Despite the struggling economy, Thibodaux is weathering the storm. We don’t
expect growth this year, but we also don’t expect the economy to get any worse.” Acadia Road and North Canal Boulevard have been location magnets for businesses in recent years. The latter underwent an 8-month, $11 million repair project in 2016 to reconfigure and add turning lanes for improved motorist safety. The project, funded by federal and state money with no cost to the city, has improved traffic flow on the highly traveled highway and is now an added incentive for new businesses wanting to call the area home. “We still have retail developers and businesses who remain interested in relocating here, despite the economy,” Eschete says. “Some companies haven’t found the exact space they are looking for, or are waiting for an existing space to open up. If the space would be there, some retailers would be here already. There is high interest in wanting to be south of Glenwild Drive (near Lowe’s and Santa Fe Cattle Co.), but new developments will go north of there as the area grows.” Thibodaux collects about $12 million annually in city taxes, Eschete says. In March 2016, voters passed a half-cent sales tax, for which the city began seeing benefits the following July. Much of this tax money will fund capital
projects. Even with the increase, Eschete says his budget and revenue forecasts will be conservative. “I don’t anticipate that we’ll see a lot of growth, even if things begin picking up mid-year,” Eschete says. “I’d much rather be paying $3 a gallon for gas instead of $2 a gallon so our people can have jobs.” - T -

Cajun Music Preservation Society Cajun music is a part of Thibodaux’s joie de vivre, and the Cajun Music Preservation Society plans to keep it that way. Founded by members Tysman Charpentier, Allyse Ferrara, Quenton Fontenot and Misty Leigh McElroy to promote, preserve and enhance the awareness and appreciation of traditional Cajun Music in southeast Louisiana, the group hosts frequent jam sessions at the Venetian in downtown Thibodaux and other local restaurants, festivals and private events. The Cajun Music Preservation Society is responsible for continuing the local favorite Swamp Stomp Festival with the assistance of the Bayou Lafourche Tourist Commission, and has been featured at Thibodeauxville and the Chamber’s 50th Anniversary Celebration.

eLearning Academy Doug and Nancy Toups had a dream 17 years ago to revolutionize education in Thibodaux and the neighboring communities. With the support of a dedicated team of educators, their dream became eLearning Academy, promoting an individualized learning approach for students to succeed at their own pace. Nancy, an experienced educator who gained a firsthand understanding of the benefits of homeschooling, worked with other skilled teachers to develop the quality curriculum that is now changing how K-12 students in Thibodaux, Houma, Morgan City, Baton Rouge – even Columbia, South America – learn fundamental and advanced skills.

Livin’ in Louisiana’s Cajun Bayou Google “Louisiana’s Cajun Bayou” and the first result you see is a link to the Bayou Lafourche Area Convention and Visitors Bureau’s freshly branded website. Clicking that link transports visitors from across the globe to the bayou, right in the heart of Lafourche Parish. Immediately capturing the eye is a festive video showing “culture up and down the bayou” as locals cast shrimp nets, reel in a fresh catch, dance at a Cajun restaurant and get an up-close look at bayou living on a swamp tour. The home page alone creates a desire to experience the popular travel destination that Thibodaux and the surrounding Lafourche Parish community has become. “The Louisiana’s Cajun Bayou brand is a great way to showcase the people, food, outdoors and culture of this area,” says Timothy Bush, president and CEO of the Bayou Lafourche Area Convention and Visitors Bureau. “Our goal is to drive visitors to the experiences that Lafourche Parish has to offer. If they’re traveling to Thibodaux, we want them to stay at local hotels, eat at local restaurants and enjoy local attractions. The longer they stay to enjoy the Cajun Bayou experience, the more they will spend and contribute to our local economy.” Bush and his staff worked with a strategic community branding agency out of Nashville to create the Louisiana’s Cajun Bayou brand, ultimately settling on the name as a way to recognize Bayou Lafourche as the heartbeat and identity of the community. “That is how we give directions around here: up the bayou, down the bayou,” Bush laughs.

Since the new brand launched in January 2017, the bureau has been strategically targeting potential visitors from neighboring states like Mississippi, Arkansas and Texas, especially larger metropolitan areas like Houston and Dallas. Bush says he has begun to see the new campaign’s impact. Website views, notably the events page, are on the rise, and the bureau’s office has been receiving more information requests. “Food, festivals and events like the Manning Passing Academy play a large role in driving traffic to Cajun Bayou,” Bush says. “We capitalize on that opportunity by finding creative ways to introduce visitors to our culture when these events are happening. During the recent MPA, we hosted sold-out tours that took families to popular attractions like the Bayou Country Children’s Museum and Chef John Folse Culinary Institute at Nicholls and Center for Traditional Louisiana Boat Building in Lockport, immersing them in our culture up and down the bayou.” Like most business owners and CEOs, Bush is battling south Louisiana’s down economy. He recognizes that the number of visitors to the area has fallen slightly but is confident his industry is still producing and will continue to produce strong numbers. Located just 35 miles from New Orleans and a short drive from larger markets like Houston, Louisiana’s Cajun Bayou is a popular destination more now than ever. “We want to sound like a destination,” Bush says. “We want to put our Cajun Bayou experience front and center with our name so our culture can continue to be a driver for local businesses.” - T -
