While many people leave behind the Florida summer
experience to head up north, there are a select number of golfers who don’t seem to mind it. As the snowbirds are starting to leave and head back up north, golf courses will look a little emptier and finding a tee time will become a little more accessible. The Meadows Country Club in Sarasota continues the renaissance of their club, with the recent completion of the Community Lifestyle and Wellness Facility and expansion of their social spaces. This follows the recent renovation of their golf course, completed last year. Venetian Golf Club is now an exclusively private club under their new ownership, Heritage Golf Group, and has recently completed a million-dollar extensive renovation to their course. A limited number of memberships are available to both residents and non-residents of their community. Be sure to check out the multitude of Summer and Trial Memberships that many of the area’s public and private clubs are offering this summer, such as Golf in Venice, Peridia and The Meadows, just to name a few. Some also offer reciprocals to other private clubs, where you’ll have a chance to play at other area gems not traditionally open to the public. Life on Course
If variety is the very spice of life, then golf at The Meadows is very flavorful. With 54 holes of golf, there is always a tee time available for many golfers to enjoy a friendly round of golf.
The 18-hole historic Members Course underwent a major renovation and reopened to rave reviews in January 2021. This Ron Garl-designed course was rebuilt from top to bottom. All 18 greens were reshaped and rebuilt using TifEagle bermudagrass, which offers improved speed, consistency and playability. The Meadows course has always been known as one of the finest layouts in the area, offering six sets of tees with yardages from 4,586 to over 6,700. The 18th hole is also considered by many one of the best finishing holes in Sarasota, featuring a beautiful par 4, with an approach to a heavily guarded green with water to the left and bunkers to the right. The semi-private par 72 Highlands Course is open to public play. Offering a diverse layout winding through 100-year oak trees and massive pine trees on the front nine, and an Old Florida park-like setting on the back that opens up to generous fairways and greens, it’s challenging but friendly. One of the best semi-private family courses on the west coast of Florida can be found at The Groves Course. Designed by noted architect Arthur Hills this Par 65 is a great place for junior golfers to begin and a fun place for women and senior golfers. Don’t let the yardage fool you, it’s been known to make even scratch golfers play to their handicap with challenging tee shots and undulating greens. Weekly golf games such as men’s, women’s and mixed leagues are available on the semi- private courses. Tournaments are always welcome, and
first-class instruction is available with a staff of PGA golf professionals on the 12,000 square-foot putting green perfectly situated between the clubhouse and the large driving range.
Tennis Anyone?
The Tennis Center at The Meadows has been recognized again and again by Tennis Magazine as a top-notch facility. Featuring 17 Har-Tru tennis courts - 15 of which are lighted for night play- along with a stadium court and viewing area to highlight special matches, The Tennis Center accommodates area tournaments, team tennis, round robins, ladders, and socials that are held throughout the year. Two pickleball courts are accessible for members and community residents. Combining the elements of badminton, tennis, and table tennis, pickleball is one of the fastest-growing sports in the nation. Make a Splash
After a day of yoga, tennis, or golf there is always time for a swim in the Junior Olympic pool. Whether you want to swim laps, join a water aerobics class, or just lounge poolside, it’s a great gathering spot and is frequently used for club social activities.
Foodies Rejoice
Dining options are plentiful and include two restaurants, a banquet facility available for weddings and parties, plus catering is available for private or corporate events or just a nice gathering in your home. The Fountain View Lounge is a contemporary casual bar and restaurant in the main clubhouse that overlooks a beautiful water feature and the putting green. Inside dining as well as seating on the outside deck is available.
The Centre Court Lounge, an informal dining venue adjacent to the tennis courts and pool is a great place to grab a bite to eat and offers a new outdoor deck where members and guests can enjoy our beautiful weather and scenery. The recently remodeled Regency Room is a bit more formal with an intimate bar and is the site of many weddings and events. The new design merges “Old Florida” with a mid-century modern motif with spectacular views of the golf course.

The Stars of the LPGA Tour Return to Tampa Bay for The Pelican Women’s Championship, Nov. 7-13
The LPGA Tour’s return to the Tampa Bay region for the first time in over 30 years for fans did not disappoint in finalround theatrics and drama at the 2021 Pelican Women’s Championship at Pelican Golf Club. Nelly Korda bounced back from a triple-bogey on the par-4 17th at Pelican Golf Club to birdie the 18th and final hole in regulation from 21 feet to force a four-way playoff alongside Lydia Ko, Sei Young Kim and Lexi Thompson.
The group returned to play the 18th hole in the playoff, and similar to her final hole of regulation, Korda went on to record her second-consecutive birdie, this time from 23 feet, to capture her fourth LPGA Tour win in 2021.
In 2022, The Pelican Women’s Championship is excited to welcome 108 of the world’s top female professional golfers back to Tampa Bay for the tournament’s third edition, taking place Nov. 10-13, competing for a share of a $2 million purse. Tickets are on sale for the 2022 Pelican Women’s Championship exclusively online at www.PelicanLPGA.com. A variety of ticket packages are available, including access to the “Lightning Lounge” a luxury skybox overlooking the tournament’s signature par-3 12th, and general admissions tickets that offer a wide degree of entertainment and access.

pierce the oak lined fairway. Fog floats off the grass and evaporates towards the morning sky. You hear the cracking sound of steel upon urethane. The first drive of the day is launched down the fairway and onto the dew lined grass that waits below. Another day of golf has begun. Easily accessible from most anywhere in Tampa Bay, “The Mainlands” is nestled in the heart of Pinellas County inside the Mainlands of Tamarac retirement community. Family owned and run, Mainlands has built its reputation over the years by catering to the golfing public in a laid back and friendly environment. Fashioned in typical Florida style, the open fairways of Mainlands are generally kind to shots hit with less than perfect aim. Water comes into play on 12 of its 18 holes. However, only two feature forced carries, both under 100 yards. Comprised of nine par 3’s, seven par 4’s, and two par 5’s, the course of-
fers a little something for everyone. A natural match for golfers without long bomber distance, Mainlands nevertheless teases longer hitters with the possibility of driving the green on several par 4’s. Both par 5’s – with a well placed drive – also offer the potential for eagles to those of us who don’t hit 300 yard drives. With a par of 67, you can play bogey golf and still shoot an 85 without having to explain that you played a course measuring just over 4800 yards from the tips. Yes, Mainlands has two potentially drivable par 4’s to start you off the front nine, but before you start imagining those eagle putts, remember the risk of straying into the bunkers guarding those two greens. The risk/reward theme continues throughout the round. The 470 yard, par-5 fifth hole will tempt you to try and reach it in two, but don’t pull either shot into the lake that runs down the entire left side of the hole. The eleventh hole is another “reachable” par 5 measuring 490

yards from the back tee. However, the hole is a pronounced dogleg left around another lake, requiring much risk for the reward of an eagle putt. You’ll probably make more decisions on this par-67 layout than you would ever make on a regular par-72 course negotiating the varying hole distances, the strategically placed bunkers and the abundance of water. And you’ve done it in less time, for less money, and if you walked, you got some exercise. Part of the appeal of The Mainlands is not just the course itself but the good-hearted nature of both employees and patrons alike…a little bit Caddyshack meets Cheers. The relaxed atmosphere makes it an attractive place for seniors, women, and everyone looking to enjoy a stress-free day on the links. The Mainlands hosts numerous tournaments throughout the year as well as weekly leagues for both men and women alike. There’s a Sunday 2-person Scramble that starts at 4:00 PM, and a new 9-hole League on Mondays at 6:00 PM. Both run all summer through August. Mainlands boasts a fully stocked pro shop long known for having great deals on equipment, soft-goods, and apparel…from Skechers and Asics shoes to the newest tech from Cleveland/Srixon and Wilson Golf.
Every month there are at least two specials in the shop. The Uncle Julio deal is THE deal on greens fees or golf equipment. The Bill
#16 is home to the Mainlands Hole-In-One contest where you can enter to win up to $2,000 for an ace.
Blair Beverage special is for connoisseurs of a good drink. Both of these monthly deals can be found in the local America’s Favorite Coupon Book as well as on our website. For example, July is HALF PRICE greens fees for Active Military, Veterans, Police and Firemen and First Responders. September is always Ladies Month, where ladies get HALF PRICE greens fees all month. Hungry or thirsty after your round? Mainlands’ throwback lunch counter proudly serves the coldest beer in town as well as hotdogs and sandwiches.
