DAVE, 21 STUDENT, NON-SMOKER I’m a college senior majoring in theatre and set design. When I’m not working on my craft, you can find me hiking, biking, or surfing. After a long day of school and sports, I like to kick back with my Yorkie and watch reality TV.

BEN, 26 PROFESSIONAL, NON-SMOKER I’m a screenwriter looking for a roomie to set up shop with me in my bad-ass beach pad. I’m active in local theatre, and just started surfing lessons. I love animals, and enjoy hiking, camping, and chilling out at home.

EDITOR’S LETTER | back to school 2015

Welcome! For those who will be officially setting foot on a campus for the first time, I know the thought of embarking on this landmark journey in your life seems daunting. Don’t let those butterflies take over your stomach; consider this to be one of the best times of your life. College is where you will take the steps to flourish in your career, make new connections and make new memories that will last a lifetime!

Group CEO & Publisher Kevin Harrington Editor Jess Smith

When first going to college, it is important to answer the age-old question: Should I live on campus or off? Our article on p.24 “Commuter vs. Dorm Life: Which is best for you?” weighs the pros and cons to help you make your decision. We know with going away to college, some relationships may be strained due to longdistance. In this issue of College News we introduce our relationship advice column “Corey’s Thoughts On Love”, where she gives advice on dealing with long-distance loves. Check out #CTOL on p. 39.

Halloween is just around the corner. To gear up for the spooky holiday we compiled a list of the ‘Top 5 Most Haunted Campuses” on p. 42. Hopefully your campus didn’t make the list! We also have a list of the Top 5 Halloween costumes for 2015 that you should be rocking at your college’s Halloween party! For our cover story we got an exclusive chance to sit down with Chilean multi-instrumentalist/fashion designer, Francisca Valenzuela for an inspirational interview on p.50 We also delve into the USCD’s feminist ‘Free the Nipple’ campaign on p.54. We have some great stuff for you to christen your first time or return to school. So open this up and enjoy! Also, don’t forget to check out our brand new website at www.collegenews.com!

EAR CANDY | paper fox

By Julia Escobosa

PAPERFOX Talks Using Tinder for Marketing In a time when people are using Tinder for last minute hook-ups and free pizza, one SoCal indie band is using the dating app to build a tangible fan base conveniently co-located to their live show circuits.

*5! Have you had any weird Tinder experiences? 7-! There was one fan that showed up by surprise, and drove about an hour and a half to see us. She was very persistent on trying to hang out with one of us after the show and several times after that night. *5! Do you feel like Tinder has helped build your fan base a good amount? 7-! We’ve definitely grown our numbers on socials a bit, and some fans have posted moments about us as well. We definitely don’t regret this outlandish or peculiar way of marketing ‘cause it’s definitely worked.

8

*5! Where did the name come from? 7-! It stemmed from the name “Paper Tigers” which is a Thrice song, but we didn’t want to be named after a specific song from a band, so we changed it to Fox. However, we saw Paper Fox was taken, so we renamed to PAPERFOX as one word and in caps. *5! Any record deals on the horizon? 7-! We currently worked with a label for a radio campaign with the promotions department of an indie label, but for now we are self releasing until we find a fitting label that can help us with furthering our careers. *5! What’s your dream venue? 7-! Madison Square Garden; O2 Arena in London. *5! How do you guys balance your music, school, and work? 7-! We just do by not sleeping. We are a DIY band and support ourselves, so we don’t really have a choice. We feel that this

hard work and persistence will pay for itself in the future. *5! Has your Dreamcatcher EP had the reaction you’d hoped for? 7-! It’s definitely been better that we expected, as this was a self-produced and self-marketed EP. We’re grateful that people are recognizing the hard work we put into this project, and so far haven’t gotten many negative comments about our work, which might actually be a bad thing, cause you know what they say: “Once the haters come in, is when you’re really famous.” Ha. Right now since this is our fully self-supported, and produced EP, this is the most raw and absolute pure release from PAPERFOX. *5! When are we getting a full length? 7-! As soon as we find the proper representation, funding, and support that will help us with what we’re trying to create with the full length. cn

© 123R F

*VSSLNL 5L^Z! Where did you get the idea to sign up for Tinder as a band? 7HWLY -V_! Christian was brainstorming on a way to increase local fanbase and get them to come to local shows since most of our fans are spread throughout other countries and states from Youtube traffic and Social Media campaigns.

CN’S TOP 10 PICKS FOR THE FOOTBALL SEASON BY RACHEL GEIGER

1

OHIO STATE

OSU won the National Championship title last year. With many of the same threatening players returning, the Buckeyes are sure to be a force to be reckoned with. They also have the incredible Braxton Miller, who they lost due to injury last

10

season, back for his final year. It’s unclear whether or not he will start since his replacement Cardale Jones did such a nice job during his absence. Anyway you slice it, this is certainly the team to beat as of right now. 2

MICHIGAN STATE

The Spartans are placed this high up on my list largely due to the fierce defense and experienced QB Connor Cook. He isn’t the best Quarterback in CFB by any means, but he’s still seasoned and knows what he’s doing out there on the field. This could be a big positive for MSU later on down the road.

3

BAYLOR

This Texas team is one of the most athletic teams going into this 2015 fall season. The team is stacked with a great defense. They have a new Quarterback so it isn’t quite clear how that position will turn out, but everything else looks pretty good so far.

TEXAS CHRISTIAN UNIVERSITY 4

TCU is pretty high up on preseason lists. I placed them here lower than the others because I think this one can be a bit of a wildcard at times. Trevone Boykin is easily one of the best QB’s in

© 123R F

ootball is a huge part of the college experience. We all have different football programs depending on what school you attend, so it’s not easy to include every single school out there. Therefore, I’ve decided to give just a pretty general overview of what teams you should lookout for this fall.

College Football as of right now. The sky is really the limit for this team. Despite this, I think that it could be easy for them to get caught up in all this hype and not focus on what is right in front of them. This should definitely be a fun team to watch regardless of what the outcome might be for TCU. 5

ALABAMA

Roll Tide is ranked because they have one of the best defenses in the country. This is no surprise because Alabama basically always has an incredibly deep defense, but it is something to take note of anyway. The only huge question mark here is with the imperative QB position. It’s unclear who will be starting for Alabama, which can naturally be a problem for them. 6AUBURN

I’m liking Auburn because they have no problem with scoring. Yes, the defense could use some work, but it’s also a huge plus if you can score touchdowns with the amount of ease that this squad can. They haven’t had the best team in recent years, so I’d love to see them truly shine this season. 7OREGON

Although the Ducks lost their starting QB, they still made it all the way to the championship game last

season. They won the Pac-12 title last season and the odds of them winning it again is looking good so far. With the amazing running back Royce Freeman, this team should be brilliant.

UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA 7

USC is typically ranked fairly high during preseason, but gradually drops in the fall. I’m not sure if things are going to change for the Trojans this season or not, but I’d say they have a decent shot at an above average season. They will probably have the most trouble on the defensive end but that could potentially be fixed.

FLORIDA STATE UNIVERSITY 8

I hesitated putting this one on my list at all due to all the controversy the school has been under in recent years. All that aside, they still have assembled a decent program and that can’t be ignored. This should be yet another winning season for them. 9OLE

MISS

Yet another team with a highly ranked defense. The new QB will hopefully lead the Rebels to victory as they find their footing as a fairly young team. cn

MONEY & CAREERS | saving money on textbooks

Save Money on Textbooks! Don’t be that freshman sucker buying textbooks at full price BY ELLEN ZACARIAS

Textbook prices are notoriously awful for a student’s wallet. Here are some ways to save some cash on buying textbooks for your upcoming semester.

BUY USED I have a few friends who are totally averse to buying used books after some unpleasant childhood experiences, but with textbooks going at around $150 a pop, it’s time to let go and save some cash. Order ahead of time to make sure they arrive before class starts. Where to buy used textbooks: * Half.com - The textbook side of eBay offers great deals on textbooks. * Amazon.com - Check out the “Used” section under each textbook’s page. Chances are that you can save a lot of money this way. * Facebook Pages/Groups - Students post their used textbooks for sale on these pages/ groups dedicated to reselling used textbooks for class. The plus side is that you don’t have to pay for shipping! 14

* Friends - Ask your friends on Facebook (or in person) if they’re planning on selling their textbooks at the end of the semester. A friend once sold me a $120 almost-new astronomy textbook for 60 bucks and a short ride to the mall. RENT/BORROW Why buy a book for a class that you’ll never use again? Renting a book can save you lots of money, and you won’t have to worry about finding a buyer for your used textbook at the end of the semester. Where to rent/borrow textbooks: * Library - My college library kept some course textbooks on reserve for students to borrow for a few hours at a time during the day. Some other textbooks were even available for rent for the whole semester! Lit classes are great because there’s bound to be a library (college or public) that has the book available for loan. * College Bookstore - My college bookstore rented out older textbooks that were unfit for resale. Be quick! The for-rent copies go fast. * Online - My favorite book renting services include Amazon.com (they rent too!), CampusBookRentals.com, and Chegg.com. SHARING IS CARING Know a friend who’s also taking a class? Congratulations, now you have an instant study buddy! You can either pitch in for a textbook together or arrange to borrow your friend’s

textbook. Pay them back with love or favors. PHOTOCOPY It happens all the time - professors list hundreds of dollars’ worth of books in the syllabus, and then only use a few pages out of the textbook. Avoid this by borrowing a classmate’s textbook to photocopy (or even snap a picture of) the assigned pages. This is similar to sharing, but minus the commitment. FIND AN ELECTRONIC COPY Ebooks are often cheaper than textbooks, and you can save them to your laptop, tablet, and even phone. Occasionally, you can find the electronic copies of textbooks in PDF format online for free (such as on Gutenberg.org), but here are two popular textbook vendors that sell ebooks: * Amazon.com * Barnes and Noble cn

I

was that freshman sucker standing in the neverending line on the first day of classes, waiting to purchase my armful of overpriced textbooks. After that first fateful semester of college, I learned that I could have saved hundreds (if not thousands) of dollars by ordering used copies online. Throughout my classes, I saw classmates with rented textbooks, or classmates who asked to use my books to take photos of assigned pages with their phone cameras. Here are some tips on saving some hard-earned dough on your textbooks:

MONEY & CAREERS | linkedin

How to Network On Use LinkedIn to build a strong network of connections that you can rely on. BY ELLEN ZACARIAS

The beauty of networking is that it’s a two-way street: not only can you help your contacts, but your contacts can also connect you with opportunities. However, before anything can happen, there has to be a relationship in place.

A

lso known as the professional sister of Facebook, LinkedIn. com is an online social networking tool by people in many fields ranging from geology to medicine. Besides completely setting up your profile with a photo and complete work history, here are some tips on how to use LinkedIn to establish a valuable network that can help you in your future professional pursuits: ASK FOR THEIR CONTACT INFORMATION. Networking events are great for exchanging contact information with new people. Bring a pen and notebook or have your phone ready to record your new contacts’ information. Be sure to get their full name, email, and/or a way to find them on LinkedIn.

© 123R F

FOR NEW CONTACTS, PERSONALIZE YOUR INVITATION TO CONNECT. If you’re trying to connect with someone you just met, personalize the invitation to include some information for them to remember how you met, like, “Hi [insert name]! This is Allison. It was great talking to you about Fifty Shades of Grey at the mixer tonight. I really enjoyed hearing your thoughts about the book. Let’s keep in touch!” MAINTAINING CONNECTIONS Keep in touch with your contacts (friends, family, and people you meet) so that it won’t be awkward later on when you ask them for a favor: * After attending mixers together - You can slowly grow or maintain a connection with someone you chatted with at a mixer or networking

event. Send them a short but thoughtful message every now and then to see what they’re up to, and also share a little about yourself and your goals. * Holidays and birthdays are great opportunities drop a note and catch up with a contact. Along with a happy birthday, ask them how they’re doing. THANK YOU NOTE Ideally, a thank you note should be written on paper, but if you don’t have their address, then a thoughtful thanks via LinkedIn will suffice. Send a thank you message: * When someone introduces you to their contacts. * When someone coaches/mentors you. * After chatting with someone at an event. * After an interview - thank them for their time. * After a meetup/lunch date. Approach networking with the mindset of connecting with and helping your contacts before they can help you. A lot of people tend to think of networking as a sort of “help me!” mindset, but seeing it in terms of being mutually beneficial can help people get over that reluctance. We’re all here to help each other! cn

POLITICS | 2016 election

OVERVIEW OF THE

2016 US PRESIDENTIAL PRIMARIES

A

mong the Democrats, the likely contenders for their party’s presidential nomination are former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Senator Bernie Sanders. Other contenders include former Governors Martin O’Malley and Lincoln Chafee.

/033(9@ *305;65 The former Secretary of State appointed by Obama as well as former First Lady is still among the strongest if not the strongest candidate to receive the Democratic Party’s nomination. Clinton has a particularly strong base among women though her aim would be to put greater focus in various

18

other issues like pay equity and race as well as gender. Hillary Clinton could rely on donations among “super PACs” as well as wealthy Democrats along with her experiences in the 2008 primaries. She already has a well networked fundraising machine compared to the other candidates. Early polls also show that Clinton is the favorite among those that have decided to run for president. However, she was also involved in scandals such as Benghazi or the issue concerning her emails which fellow candidates and the GOP would certainly bring up. Though she has a great chance of receiving the nomination, Clinton has also received a load of flak from the GOP candidates as a result of this.

),950, :(5+,9: The Independent Senator of Vermont, Bernie Sanders quickly emerged as Hillary Clinton’s toughest competitor for the Democratic Party nomination. Key issues that Sanders stresses are wealth inequality and the role money plays in politics. Bernie Sanders emerged as Hillary Clinton’s chief competitor despite her seemingly strong start. Sanders is catching up to her in the polls, especially in key battleground states like New Hampshire. Bernie Sanders is also able to cultivate a “man of the people” image because his reliance on grassroots donations as well as how highlighting the contributions of big donors and super PACs

to Clinton. Though Bernie Sanders appears to be a more appealing candidate than scandal ridden Clinton, his uncompromising position could also be a key weakness which other candidates can exploit as too “fringy.” Along with left liberals, Bernie Sanders would have to find a way to attract moderates of the Democratic Party to his side all the same without compromising his left-ofHillary ideology. 6;/,9 *(5+0+(;,: Martin O’Malley and Lincoln Chafee have not stirred as much attention in the media as Sanders and Clinton. Martin O’Malley’s key strength is the economy which defines much of his foreign policy. O’Malley remarked that stolen data and weak cyber security results in lost jobs and pledges to combat ISIS not just with military strength but also political solutions. O’Malley pointed to the growth of Maryland’s economy during the recession and wants to establish a $15 minimum wage and to expand social security. Lincoln Chafee presents himself as the anti-war candidate and notes his opposition to the Iraq War as compared to Hillary Clinton. Another notable aspect of Chafee’s campaign is his interest in adapting the metric system in the United States. Unlike the Democrats, the Republicans do not have a clear cut nominee among the many candidates this election cycle. Many Republicans are seeking their party’s nomination including US Senators: Ted Cruz, Rand Paul, Marco Rubio, Lindsey Graham, Governors: Bobby Jindal, Chris Christie, former Governors: Jeb Bush, Mike Huckabee, George Pataki, Rick Perry, former Senator Rick Santorum, as well as Donald Trump, Carly Fiorina, and Dr. Ben Carson. 1,) )<:/ Former Governor of Florida Jeb Bush has a slight advantage in polls over the other candidates though. One important aspect of Jeb Bush’s campaign is his attempt to woo in Hispanic votes through personal appeals and his promise of making the path to citizenship easier for immigrants. However this approach has dealt him plenty of critics from the conservatives and he is forced to juggle his position with traditionally conservative voters and fellow candidates. As well as being related to two previous presidents, Bush is relatively well networked especially

in key battleground state Florida where he was governor however he must find ways to connect with Tea Party voters, many whom consider him too moderate. +65(3+ ;9<47 Rather surprisingly, Donald Trump is gaining in polls and currently second to Jeb Bush in New Hampshire. Trump sharply criticizes Bush’s immigration policy, remarking that half of the immigrants were “criminals” and pledges build an extensive border fence along the border with Mexico. Trump also views the effort to allow migrant children into the US as attempts to get more Democratic voters. 9(5+ 7(<3 The next closest candidate in the New Hampshire polls is Kentucky Senator Rand Paul. His supporters include those of his father Ron Paul, Tea Party voters, and noninterventionist Republicans. Concerning immigration, Paul prefers to work with extended work visas and border security instead of citizenship like Bush. Paul views the growth of federal spending as harmful which leads to the infringement of civil liberties. He is also against the use of executive power by the president to circumvent Congress on decisions. 6;/,9 *(5+0+(;,: Another Republican contesting Jeb Bush for moderate votes is Chris Christie, although it appears that Jeb Bush is the more favored candidate especially after Christie’s “Bridgegate” scandal. Other candidates with strong support of the Tea Party movement include Dr. Ben Carson, Marco Rubio, and Ted Cruz.cn

LIFESTYLE | commuting vs. dorm life

Commuter vs. Dorm Life: Which is Best For You? BY DANIELLE DABRIO-CARROLL

We’re getting closer to that time where we must answer the dreaded question: “to commute or not to commute, which one shall be my reality?” It’s hard to make this decision because there are so many benefits to both, but also just as many disadvantages. So we’re going to break it down for all of you still undecided beauties that have the option of both.

Commuter Life: Ha, what are those!? It’s true that it is harder to meet people and get involved when you’re commuting, but it isn’t impossible. There are clubs and different organizations you can join if you want to be involved on campus and meet people. Good thing about this though is that you also don’t have to deal with everything that comes with living on campus. Dorm Life: You know everyone on your floor and they all know you, you’re in the same classes, and eat in the same cafe. So there is always someone to hang out with… and maybe study with. There is also always someone to get in trouble with and distract you. Living on campus can be full of distractions to keep you from your studies and cause your grades to suffer.

MONEY:

Commuter Life: No room and board fees!! Living on campus can sometimes get to be as expensive as $10,000 extra on top of

24

your regular tuition. You do have to pay for parking passes and maybe a toll or two, but it still doesn’t add up to as much. Dorm Life: You might cry a little more than the commuter when looking at the bill for your tuition, but you can also qualify for more scholarships and aid when living on campus. You also don’t have to worry about the other bills that come with living on campus, like gas… that’s a big gone.

GETTING TO CLASS:

Commuter Life: It’s going to be a struggle, you have to get up earlier, try and beat traffic, fight for parking (as previously mentioned). Professors can sometimes also be more tolerable with lateness from commuters (as long as it isn’t a habit). Since of course things happen that are out of your control. Dorm Life: No excuses, no exceptions, sorry buddy. You’re right on campus within walking distance of all your classes. No professor is going to want to her that you slept through your alarm, that’s not going to cut it. On the

other hand though, you also don’t have to get up two hours before that 8am in order to get there on time.

MONEY:

Commuter Life: Get up, go to class, go to work (if you’re working), go home, and go to sleep, repeat. That’s basically your schedule for the most part. It creates a less complicated experience since a lot of your free-time will probably be in the library doing homework (watching Netflix), because going home to take a nap and goof off (watch Netflix) isn’t an option. Dorm Life: You’re in the middle of everything that’s going on around campus! Sorority/Fraternity recruitment, job fairs, performances, sporting games, and other various events. You know about everything that’s going on and you should take advantage of it all. Yes it can get overwhelming, and yes they can be distracting, but everything in moderation my college guppy, you’ll make it. cn

LIFESTYLE | beautiful campuses

Top Beautiful Campuses in the U.S. BY JAMIE GILLESPIE

R

emember those days during junior year of high school spent Googling every college from Maine to Maui? There were dream schools, reach schools, match schools, and safety schools, and the list seemed to grow on a daily basis. Did the school have the right major? Was there a club team for the sport you played in high school? Was the tuition affordable? In choosing a place to call home for the next four years, only so many questions could be answered on the school’s website. But more than academics, Greek life, or student activities, one search criteria was more important than the rest when deciding where to apply: the campus tour.

26

No matter how great a school looked on screen, nothing can change the fate of where you send the Common App more than the first time you visit the campus. NYU might have had the best department for your intended major, but New York City might not be the small college-town feel you imagined. You might be a big fan of Syracuse or Boston College sports teams, but can you survive a New England winter? We’re taught not to judge a book by its cover, but it is much harder not to judge a college by its campus. There is obviously a lot more to college than the beauty of the campus, but it’s easy to fall in love with a campus that will make your high

school friends jealous when you start posting photos on Instagram during orientation. No matter their school, many readers will surely be irked that their alma mater is not on this list (Full Disclosure: the only reason the University of Miami is not on this list is because I felt obligated to be unbiased). College campuses are some of the most beautiful collections of landscaping, architecture, and foliage in America, but these five college campuses exceed expectations… DARTMOUTH COLLEGE As a member of the Ivy League founded in 1769, Dartmouth’s New Hampshire campus offers a beautiful mix of history and nature.

LIFESTYLE | beautiful campuses

With American elms throughout the campus and picturesque backdrops of the Connecticut River’s Upper Valley, Dartmouth is not only an Ivy but also a beautiful college. Don’t take our word for it, check out their webcams. SEWANEE: THE UNIVERSITY OF THE SOUTH Rather than the campus or the quad, Sewanee’s massive 13,000 acres of mountain property is officially referred to by students as the Domain, and the landscape views atop the Cumberland Plateau certainly give students a reason to love their campus.

LEWIS AND CLARK COLLEGE Recently named America’s greenest college by the Princeton Review, Lewis and Clark College’s Portland campus is both sustainable and breathtaking. Nature lovers will not find a more fitting campus that immerses students in the beauty of the Pacific Northwest. PEPPERDINE UNIVERSITY If you’re looking for a beautiful campus, it’s hard to beat Pepperdine’s Malibu location with sweeping Pacific views and palm trees aplenty. Imagine dorm rooms with ocean views and it’s easy to imagine why Pepperdine tops this list.

UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO If urban settings are you’re idea of beauty, the University of Chicago’s architecturally grand campus will keep you motivated while studying at a top-ranked university. Casually walking past several buildings that are listed as National Historic Landmarks on the way to class only begins to describe the campus’ aesthetic appeal.

LIFESTYLE | partying safely

TIPS ON PARTYING

(SAFELY)

BY JULIA E. A. JOHNSTON

Whether you’re a party animal or a novice, becoming a party expert is necessary. Be safe, learn the rules, and pass them on!

2 If you do decide to drink make sure you eat something substantial before, during, and after. It’s very dangerous to drink on an empty stomach. Getting something in your stomach to absorb the alcohol will prevent you from getting too intoxicated and will

28

also help out with your hangover the next day. HOWEVER, simply eating a delicious burrito does not give you a free pass to drink excessively without consequences, you will still get drunk just not as fast as you would on an empty stomach. 3 Pace yourself! Drink water throughout your partying to stay hydrated and slow your drink ordering down. There is always going to be that person who thinks partying is a race and wants to be the first one to the finish. Don’t be that person! It’s not a good look and more importantly it’s dangerous. If you see someone who is beyond intoxicated,

pay it forward, help them out. Look out for one another. 4 Never ever consume a drink from a stranger. I don’t care if it’s your all time favorite or she’s/he’s super attractive. Anyone can get their hands on roofies and they are absolutely tasteless. Whether you’re at a bar or a house party, whether it’s a stranger or someone you have a class with, if someone hands you a drink, you don’t have to drink it and you shouldn’t. Become a master at the casual pour-this-drink-into-the-garbage-canwithout-anyone-seeing technique. If someone hands you a drink, tell them there’s a bug in

© 123R F

1 You don’t have to drink alcohol or use drugs if you don’t want to. “I’m detoxing”, “I’m driving”, “I have an early morning”, “It’s just not my thing” are all easy reasons to give if someone is asking you to partake in something you aren’t cool with. If they don’t let it go after you say no, let them go, because they are not your friend.

it and throw it out. If someone hands you a drink say thanks, head to the bathroom and dump it out; I don’t care, just don’t risk it! Be that independent woman/man that you are and buy your own drinks and once you do, don’t put your drink down or leave it unattended even for a second. 5 If you’re taking medication, make sure mixing alcohol with the medication is safe. Antibiotics become useless with alcohol and Tylenol plus alcohol can kill you! Some medication can react horribly with alcohol making you highly intoxicated after a drink or two. If you are on medication or say you have a headache and want to take something before you go out partying, do a little research. Yeah, it might be boring, but it’ll be worth it in the long run.

7 FACT: Jungle Juice is immensely stronger than it tastes 100% of the time. It may taste sweet, or delicious, or just like juice…but it’s not. It is soda, juice, or even Kool-aid powder mixed with super strong, extremely cheap alcohol like Everclear. Don’t let those little fruit garnishes fool you into thinking it’s something light and refreshing. If you really would like to try some, have one little cup max! My advice, just don’t bother. 8 Always have your keys, wallet, and phone with you at all times. Don’t give any of those three items to your friends because your board shorts don’t have pockets or your clutch is too small to fit your phone and keys. If you get left behind, stranded, or lost in the crowd…you need to be able to call someone, pay for a ride home, etc. Nothing good happens from walking home alone at night intoxicated. 9 If you ever get really wasted, never go to sleep on your back. If you see someone passed out on their back, roll them over onto their side with their arm under their

head outstretched. Why? Because a shocking number of people have died choking on their own vomit while intoxicated. Have you heard of Jimi Hendrix? While there are a few different stories and a couple conspiracy theories, many agree that the legendary, and supremely talented Hendrix was taken way before his time when he mixed sleeping pills and alcohol and asphyxiated on his own vomit. 10 Cute Person You Just Met- “Hey, I’m over this party. Let me walk you home, it’s late.” You- “Cool, let me grab my friend(s), and we can all go together.” After a night of partying, never walk home alone. Secondly, never walk home with someone you just met or don’t know very well. Yeah, they may seem very nice and thoughtful, but there are just too many dangerous situations this could put you in. Plus, if that person has been drinking, their judgment may be clouded and they could do something to harm you or make you feel uncomfortable. Have pepper spray on you, walk home in a group, or just shell out a few extra shekels and call a cab. Treat yourself! cn

6 Don’t mix your alcohols. If you’re drinking vodka in the beginning of the night, drink vodka the rest of the time you are out. Don’t get crazy and drink a gin and tonic, then a beer, then a Fireball shot, then a fishbowl. Can you imagine that concoction in your poor stomach? Are you a masochist who wants to be rendered useless tomorrow?

Don’t mix it up, you aren’t a DJ.

LIFESTYLE | meet up app

What is the

MeetUp app? BY JULIA ESCOBOSA

In an age where so much of our lives are digitized and even online dating is no longer scoffed at, MeetUp has emerged as a go-to for weeding through the human race to find those who truly share your interests, passions and common goals. After 13 years online with over 22 million members in 182 countries, this site still seems to be one of the Internet’s best kept secrets!

Omowale Oniyide is the organizer of the Indie Dev Club, a MeetUp group dedicated to Independent Game Developers in the greater Los Angeles area. Omowale’s group has over 400 members, a number she attributes to the site’s strong SEO and ability to connect people. “Before becoming an organizer I used it as a way to explore the L.A. tech scene.” After exploring the MeetUps LA had to offer, Omowale noticed a void and decided to start her own group. “I felt that though there were tons of groups related to gaming in L.A. there was not anything that focused on the needs of the indiedev lifestyle. I gave myself a time period to test out whether or not people wanted discussions, tools, and resources on how to survive in an expensive city like L.A.”

32

The social site is also a great alternative to online dating sites. For those who still shy away from online dating because of the totally justified fear of going on a solo date with a serial killer, MeetUp is a great way to have built-in buffers for your first meeting. It’s also a great option if you prefer to make real world connections before even considering someone as a potential date. It’s not as shallow as meeting someone during a drunken night at a bar or risking awkward interactions by using work or class as your dating pool. Los Angeles resident (for now) Heather Goetz, met her boyfriend of five years through her first MeetUp while living in Hawaii. She joined a board game group that met a few times every month for a night of games and grubbing. The whole event offered an atmosphere of community and teamwork, with a potluck dinner and everyone helping with set-up and break down. “I was very active in that group, we even hosted small game nights with our roommate for those in downtown Honolulu.” Head over to MeetUp.com today to find the perfect social circle to welcome you! There are over 200,000 MeetUp groups worldwide hosting over 500,000 events each month. Still can’t find a group that’s exactly what you’re looking for? Whether you’re trying to change the world or just find some new friends, you can start your own group at https://secure.meetup.com/create/! cn

eetUp’s purpose has always been to connect people with others in their community, but it didn’t start out as as a fun-loving outlet for LARPers, drinkers, and tiny dog owners. Founded in New York City in 2002 by Scott Heiferman, MeetUp was primarily used to connect people organizing the Howard Dean campaign (Howard Dean is a politician who tried to get a democratic nomination for the 2004 presidential election, in case you didn’t know). Heiferman sites his main inspiration for the concept of MeetUp as the way communities came together after the 9/11 attacks. The interests may have expanded, but the mission is still the same: “to revitalize local community and help people around the world self-organize.”

SEX & DATING | #CTOL

It Takes Two: Making a Long-Distance Relationship Work BY COREY DEMALINE

I

t’s getting to the point in your life when big decisions will need to be made. You’re not a kid anymore. Your parents have officially set you free into the real world. If you’re heading off to an out-of-state college or pursuing a lifelong dream that takes you miles away from home, leaving everyone you love is difficult. It’s especially tough if you’re involved in a serious relationship and have grown accustomed to seeing your beloved on a regular basis. Long-distance relationships are hard. There’s no other way to describe such a situation. At one point or another, the distance could almost become unbearable. So how do you make it work?

© 123R F

Communication is key. Because you will no longer be around them every day, you must find alternative ways to communicate. Our generation is all about texting, messaging, Snapchatting, etc. But being in a long-distance relationship requires much more attention than just a few words being read on a screen throughout the day. Call each other! Being in unknown territory is sometimes overwhelming and this will bring much needed comfort and familiarity. You may not be able to hold their hand, but you can hear their voice. Make the effort. Plan trips to see each other. If you don’t have the time or funds available to go visit them, if it’s possible, have them visit you. If you’re the one

who relocated, this could be a great opportunity for your partner to see where you live and what you do on a day-to-day basis. If it’s been awhile since you last visited home, plan a trip to do so. It’s important to maintain a relationship with friends and family back at home, especially if your significant other is there. This gives you a chance to spend time with those you love and miss most. If the distance and time apart becomes too overwhelming, it may be time to weigh the options. Remember when I said you’re not a kid anymore? This is a part of it. Being separated from everyone you’ve known and loved all your life is tough, and not every person may be comfortable with it. Some people cannot handle long-distance relationships and there’s nothing wrong with this. You or your partner may be one of them. If it’s too difficult for one or the both of you, accept this and decide what is best. Maybe taking a break from the relationship and meeting new people is the most logical and realistic choice. Who knows? Taking a break may be what brings the two of you back together. But, maybe not. You’re in the real world now and meeting new people is a part of it. This is an exciting and challenging time. Neither should be holding back the other from exploring new possibilities. Change is difficult, but it’s necessary. Whether this means staying together or separating; be sure that each other’s happiness is top priority. cn

Kappa Alpha is the oldest Greek-letter social fraternity in the United States. It was founded on November 26th in 1825 at Union College. With 15 chapters, 9 being active, Kappa Alpha is a literary society and social fraternity. Their

color is scarlet, symbol the Kappa Alpha Key, and flower the carnation. Their headquarters is located in Ithaca, NY and you can check out their homepage here. (https://www.ka.org/)

Maybe instead of the oldest history, you want something that may get you the most connections after graduation. Founded on August 8, 1839 (175 years ago) at Miami University, Beta Theta Pi is an international social fraternity. With 131 chapters, 9,500 collegiate members, 200,000 lifetime members, and 11 of their alumni being CEO’s according to Forbes 200 list. This fraternity can get you to where you want to be, their colors are delicate shades of pink and blue their symbol are a dragon, diamond and star; and their flowers are the roses of the “June” or “Queen of the Prairie” variety. Actually you may just be interested in philanthropy and the charity work done by Greek Organizations. If that’s the case you might want to look into Sigma Chi, so far they have donated around $1,436,883 to their charity. They were founded on June 28th 1885 (160 years ago) also at Miami University, their colors are blue and old gold, with the white cross as their symbol, and the white rose for their flower. They are a social fraternity with 242 undergraduate chapters and 152 alumni chapters. Their headquarters is located in Evanston, Illinois and you can check out their homepage here. (http://sigmachi.org/) 46:; (*;0=, */(7;,9:! Tau Kappa Epsilon One other big thing about fraternities is brotherhood, that bond that is created that last a lifetime. Founded on January 10th 1899 (116 years ago) at Illinois Wesleyan University, Tau Kappa Epsilon has the most active chapters with 271 in total. They are an international secret and social fraternity, their colors are crimson lake cherry and pure silver grey, their symbol is the equilateral triangle, and the red carnation

HAUNTED U.S. COLLEGE CAMPUSES BY JAMIE GILLESPIE

5. University of Virginia Of all the storytellers in the world, no one tops Edgar Allen Poe when it comes to hauntings, and his old school starts off our list. A Confederate surgeon named Dr. Green is said to haunt the library to which he donated all of his books, and his ghost moved with the books when the library transferred from the University’s famed Rotunda to Alderman Library.

4. Fordham University Waking up to the sounds of a drunk roommate stumbling into the dorm well after midnight is pretty common in college,

42

but students at Fordham University’s Bronx campus have to worry about something else that goes bump in the night. Students living in Finlay Hall have told of frozen hands grabbing their throats late at night—a reminder that Finlay Hall was built on top of a morgue.

3. California State University, Channel Islands Cal State’s Channel Islands campus has only been open since 2002, but from 1936 to 1997 the campus was home to the Camarillo State Mental Hospital. Ghosts and strange voices apparently haven’t learned that the campus is now an academic institution rather than an insane asylum, and the signature bell tower is a regular site for paranormal happenings.

2. Gettysburg College Rivalries are popular on college campuses across the country, but Pennsylvania Hall at Gettysburg College was held and used as a hospital by both Confederate and Union troops during the Battle of Gettysburg. Med students know that Civil War era hospitals were more like butcher shops than modern operating rooms, so it should come as no surprise that the ghosts of bloody doctors

still haunt Pennsylvania Hall’s basement. A young couple made a suicide pact to jump from the bell tower, but the boy bailed after the girl jumped. Her ghost—only visible to guys—haunts the bell tower, trying to lure a potential suitor to jump from the tower in her cowardly boyfriend’s place. After checking out the ghostly version of Romeo and Juliet at Glatfelter Hall, head over to the Kline Theatre at Brua Hall where the General haunts backstage.

1. Ohio University Ohio University in Athens, Ohio has been universally dubbed the most haunted campus in the United States. From the girl’s basketball team that died in a bus crash haunting Washington Hall to a student named Laura who fell to her death from the fourth floor of Crawford Hall. The real haunt at OU, however, is room 428 in Wilson Hall. Ohio University stands in the center of a pentagram of Athens cemeteries, and Wilson Hall just happens to stand at the very center of that pentagram. Exact explanations of the events that have occurred in room 428 are unavailable, but Ohio University officials have sealed off room 428 and dubbed it uninhabitable for students. cn

ou might remember the eerie feeling of taking over an empty room that has been called home by dozens of students before you, but once some posters of your own are up and the dorm starts feeling like home, college campuses start feeling much more like “Animal House” than a horror movie by the time Halloween parties are on the mind, but some campuses have haunts that rival Universal’s Halloween Horror Nights. Next time you’re scared to death by that physics final, think of the five most haunted college campuses and be glad your campus doesn’t have more to be afraid of…

TOP 10 HALLOWEEN COSTUMES FOR 2015 BY JAMIE GILLESPIE

Halloween is a favorite college holiday, and college students across the country have the chance to display their costume creativity without the restrictions of a themed party. Not since the pressure of choosing a costume for the school parade and trick-or-treating during elementary school has Halloween been such an important (and busy) time of the year. After the high school drought where trick or treating was lame, the time has come again that you can be anyone for a night. Who will you be this year? To help you out, College News has compiled ten of 2015’s best Halloween costume ideas.

4PUPVUZ For a holiday that is a kid-favorite, why not go full-ten-year-old this Halloween? These little goofballs from Despicable Me are as popular as ever with their own summer blockbuster, so this is a great year for you and your friends to break out all of your yellow clothing, pop on some goggles, and have a blast in a night that caters to the villainous. :\WYLTL *V\Y[ 1\Z[PJLZ Admit it; Halloween is a time to judge. Whether judging costume contests or the amount of skin your ex is showing, the whole world is on trial on Halloween. FIRST IMPRESSIONS WITH

Jack Novak BY JULIA E.A. JOHNSTON

J

ack takes a little time out of her busy summer schedule to chat with College News. She discusses her debut Lollapalooza performance (in her hometown), what she brings to the table, and what’s next. Get to know her now, because she just might be the future of EDM.

JN: Huge....

COLLEGE NEWS: How was Lollapalooza? JACK NOVAK: Lollapalooza was amazing, it was so special to me playing in my home town. Lollapalooza is one of the best festivals in the world. It was an honor for me to play in my hometown, to have my family and friends there. It was a really special moment for me.

CN: What are your favorite things to do at home? Any particular Chicago favorites? JN: Particular Chicago favorites? I love Lou Malnati’s pizza honestly, I like to eat pizza and hang out with my family. Maybe go bowling. When I’m in Chicago I like to relax and be with people I don’t see that often. But, I will say if I want to go out, I love going to the Mid.

CN: You mentioned you were a big music video fan...

46

CN: You had a big hand in creating the “Driving Blind,” music video, how was that process? JN: It was amazing. I don’t know if you’re down, but I’d love to talk about the video I have coming out.

CN: Of course! JN: I am super into music videos. I’ve been in love with them since I was a kid. I think it’s so awesome to be able to pick a form of art that makes you feel so many different things, and then you add music to it... If they come together they can be a pretty unbelievable way to experience music. So I do love music videos, and the “Driving Blind,” video was a lot of fun.

But, I’d love to tell you about the music video I have coming up August 21st. I’m releasing a track called “If It Kills Me”, and it features the artist Black Bear. You can check out his stuff at @Iamblackbear on Twitter and Instagram. I’m really excited about this music video. About 10 months ago, I saw this video on YouTube by this director Alex Howard and the minute I saw it within 30 seconds of watching the video, I turned to my friends and said, “Who did this video? I’ve got to work with them” and I contacted her via email, and we talked for almost 10 months. We talked about making another video together. So when it finally came together, I flew out to Minnesota and we shot a music video I’m over the moon excited about. It was kind of a perfect storm because, you know, I’ve always admired Bear’s work and I’ve always wanted to work with him. I think he’s a great songwriter, a great artist, and I love Alex’s work. Just to be able to fly out to, kind of, the middle of nowhere, with two artists I respect and create something was.... I mean, I feel like if music could be like that all the time, I’d be really happy. Because it was a really wonderful experience.

CN: So that’s coming out August 21st. You also did the Bud Light Whatever USA, and that also featured Diplo? JN: Yeah, Diplo played that. There were a bunch of amazing artists who played Whatever USA. I got to do a cool thing with Diplo, where I mentored a girl, an aspiring DJ, while I was teaching classes on production in Ableton at Whatever USA. So she took the class and we film that, and I had her roll with me to soundcheck and Diplo and I surprised her together and said, “Would you be down to open for us tonight, to DJ?” And she was really excited. She went out there and killed it. Whatever USA was another amazing experience. I’ve never gotten to teach anything before, so I was a little bit nervous. So once I got up there and just kind of talked about how I learned how to produce music in Ableton, it came really naturally. Yeah, it was pretty much one of the most fun experiences of my career.

CN: That’s amazing. So then you decided to leave New York and move out to LA. That was a very important and personal decision for your career wasn’t it? JN: Yeah, absolutely. I think if you really want to work in music or anything creative, nothing is guaranteed. So a lot of times you’ve just got to take a big leap of faith, and say this is what I want to do and say, am I going to go and get it? And my moving to Los Angeles was, you know, that was kind of the catalyst. I knew that I needed to make that move and fully focus on doing music. It’s always a little bit frightening, but if you’re focused and that’s what you really want, it’s worth it. CN: It was a relatively quick decision for you. You decided in two weeks? JN: Yeah, honestly it was less than that. I think it was about a week it was just, you know, I’ve been thinking about it for a little bit but I reached the decision, and was like, “Alright I’m going to do it.” and in less than a week, I

packed up my studio apartment and I bought a plane ticket, and I rented a car and I move to LA. CN: Well it seems to always work for you, so it’s good to always trust your intuition! You’re in a very male dominated industry, that must come with its struggles. JN: I wouldn’t say it’s a struggle. I’ll admit that it’s a little bit of a boys club, but I think that at the end of the day nobody should be patted on the back because they’re a woman or they’re a man. I don’t think that it’s about sex, I think it’s about great music, you know? If you do a great job you know, and people are feeling it, people love it. Then people will respond. Again I really don’t think it has to do with being a guy or a girl. I think it’s just about putting good music out there and having a great live show. CN: So who inspires you? JN: Who inspires me? That’s another big question. I’ll give you the standard answer. Which is very true. I would say three artists that inspire me are Led Zeppelin, Lil Wayne, and Calvin Harris. CN: You are really interactive with your fans on social media, that’s really refreshing. Is that a big thing for you, to be close to the fans? Are you a people person? JN: t’s funny, everyone says that! I do music for myself, but I also didn’t get involved with music to be on my own and be solo. I put out music to connect with people, so if people are reaching out to connect with me, I feel it’s only natural to want to connect back! CN: Do you have any advice for people who want to pursue music? What do you tell them? JN: I think my best advice, would be, be true to yourself. You know, don’t let anybody lead you off. If it’s something that your intuition says, and this is what you want to do, don’t be afraid to go after it and do it. But if you’re going to do it, you’ve got to give it 110%. If you don’t, there will be somebody right behind you that will do that, and put forth that effort. So I think that when it comes to doing something creative and following your dreams you’ve got to love it and nurture it. And everyday take steps forward.

e all envision the perfect first day of class. We leave ten minutes early to grab a latte before class, wearing a stylish outfit we picked out the night before. Our hair is looking glamourous and our eyeliner is on point. We arrive to class on time, ready and eager for the day of learning ahead of us. The reality is that you stayed up a little too late with your roommates the night before and snoozed your alarm one too many times. Now you’re groggily tossing your hair into a messy bun, pulling on whatever outfit you can find and rushing to class, hoping you aren’t late. But what if you forgot tampons! You have a full day of back-to-back classes, and you’re lost trying to find your economics classroom, never mind trying to find a washroom! If you are lucky enough to live on campus you can run home and steal a tampon from your roommate, or change your underwear if necessary. But what if you have a 10 minute walk home? Or a 15 minute bus ride? How are you supposed to focus on the hours of class ahead of you when you’re paranoid that everywhere you walk you are leaving a trail of blood?! Obviously, this is an exaggeration but period leaks are no laughing matter. Instead

hen the Chilean pop-star, Francisca Valenzuela, picks up the phone she quickly informs me that she has to call me back. She is on the other line with a young LGBTQ activist and his interview is going longer than planned. Initially, I thought maybe the 28 year old Californiaborn star is double-booked. When Valenzuela calls me back she tells me she divides her time between California, Chile, and touring. She’s currently in LA and it’s “boiling”. Then somehow we begin talking about my family. Suddenly, I realize why her first interview went long. She is open, honest, and genuine and that trumps any time constraint she might have. If she’s not on your radar yet, she will be. So go ahead and let Francisca Valenzuela introduce herself to you

*VSSLNL 5L^Z! It’s amazing that you wrote

your debut poetry book, Defenseless Waters, when you were thirteen years old. Can you tell me a little about that? -YHUJPZJH =HSLUa\LSH! It was an absolutely bizarre turn of events. I was living in the US when I was much younger, I grew up in the Bay Area. I was a big book and poetry nerd. It’s crazy living in the Bay Area you can find all kinds of workshops and classes for twelve year olds about haiku poetry, it’s ridiculous! I was doing all that stuff and fortunately for me, my family

isn’t in the arts but they’re very [supportive]. It was the Bay Area I was writing a lot and taking workshops and going to camps and at one point I began to apply to young poet’s magazines and send in stuff. One of the magazine’s I sent poetry to published them. It was a bilingual, bicultural, Chicano magazine, I remember because they had Ozomatli on the cover. They published three of my poems and through that they ended up putting me in touch with the editor who had a small publishing house. They asked me to send more poetry and I was maybe twelve at the time. They really liked them and they eventually wanted to publish a collection of poetry in this very small publishing house, yet an actual publishing deal. So we did that, which was a crazy situation. Basically, I was sending in my poems and they put an editor to work with me, I was in like seventh grade. They would send them back and I’d be correcting them with my mother, who of course, was patiently going over spelling with me! I was really into graphics as well and I’m really into fonts, nerdilly enough, so I was choosing fonts and choosing the layout of the books. Through that deal, it wasn’t a very big deal in way, they asked me to do a small book tour in California with them. Through them I met another editor

who was a big Spanish editor who wanted to publish some of the short stories and that was a bigger deal because they actually paid me for that one. They gave me an up front deal and it came out regionally and in Latin America. It was in bookstores all around [me] because in the Bay Area in California you have boutique places and niche bookstores, right? So it was a more mainstream arrangement. It was just this crazy thing that happened when I was 12, 13, 14, and 15 and that was what I wanted to be doing. I wanted to study to be a poet, and a writer, and a journalist, and that’s what I wanted to do originally.

*5! Speaking about inspiration, what was the inspiration for your fashion lines with Foster?

-=! The two collections were things that I

wanted to wear basically. She laughs. I knew there were things that needed to be very consistent wardrobe-wise, like I knew I wanted to do pants and a lot of black, silver, gold, and white. Stuff that I wear, especially onstage, and a lot of stretchy fabrics. Also, at the same time, it had to be stuff we could manufacture in certain budget ranges because it was an urban casual-wear line, it’s not an expensive, elaborate line. It was a really really great experience. I had worked with them before I had been the face of

the brand for a year, they hired me to endorse them; it’s a local brand in Chile and they’re very big. They do a lot of stuff in music as well that is my style, which is very cool. I proposed the idea of doing the line and they were so open and supportive about it. It was great, I was actually literally sitting there with the manufacturers and designers choosing the buttons, designing the beading work, going into the the shops, looking at manufacturers, cotton, and sending samples to China. It was really interesting and a great learning experience. They were very open and supportive. I think it was a great alliance. That went on for two years.

*5! I wonder how involved some celebrities are

with their fashion lines. You were extremely hands on. -=! Yeah, but at the same time the proportions were much smaller it wasn’t like Rihanna’s line. I have no idea how she would work obviously, because she’s the fucking biggest celebrity in the world. In this case, we’re talking about, you know, a local and then regional thing. Especially if you have such an opportunity! For me it’s also doing something new and not doing the same thing every single day. It was a pull towards different things and having different teams and having those experiences. It made perfect sense to be that involved. Even though it wasn’t a necessity, they were very open. In the beginning I was just a name attached to it, but I would send them eighteen folders of whites, blacks, metallics, blah blah blah. I think they were like “Uh, I think we have more than we bargained for!” I’m all emailing them tons of stuff. For me it had to be something that I understood and was attached to you know? It made no sense to take it any other way.

*5! Do the same things inspire you for fashion

52

and music? Or are the inspirations separate? -=! That’s a good one. I think there’s an overlapping sense of inspiration in some visual stuff like for example I think even in music I’m more inspired by art and books than I am with actual music interestingly enough. I think they trigger many more ideas and I feel more comfortable. If you came to my workshop, for example, I have a whole bunch of books and visual art stuck on the walls, and arts and crafts crap, and piano books. It’s much more non-music, non-pop and it has to do more with stimuli. I think visually, for the Foster clothing lines, it was very similar in that sense. It had a lot of 80s-Keith-Haring-wavy kind of vibe. There’s never going to be a floral kimono or something. It was very graphic. I think musically it tends to be an esthetic similarity, I’m not making very hippie-music either. I’m very aware of that I don’t want it to be soft. I want it to have a punch as if it were a manifesto or something. It’s like the same, broad palette of stuff.

*5! You recently formed your own independent

record label, Frantastic Records? -=! Well the three albums I’ve had have been released on the independent record label I have, the only difference is that before it didn’t have a proper commercial name. Before it was corporate, but now we have the label and kind of pimped it up and have all the graphics associated with it. The thing is also the commitment to the independent label that I developed is bigger now than it was before. Before it was my default, it was what we had to do to get stuff out and around and now it’s a more committed, clear thing. We have a bigger team. I think the idea of independent isn’t as terrifying as it was before and it makes more sense, at least in the Latin America industry. Before it was still a default, it wasn’t a conscious decision and now it is absolutely a conscience and

committed decision. With that came the whole kind of pick up of the concept and the name and broadening it into a production house. We do content and videos and we have a whole bunch of different projects lined up from now until next year that have to do with my career as well as other stuff we are hoping to accomplish.

*5! What is a day in the life like for you? -=! It depends on the week. If I’m in LA, like I

am currently, it can either consist of waking up and working on songwriting stuff. For example, last year I was working on two or three songs for different songwriters and performers, so doing that. Then basically musical training. I have singing lessons and piano lessons. I practice piano and songwriting if I can get through all of that. Then just living in LA, just meeting people, exercising, having time to sleep in, stuff that I

really can’t do. When I was going to college and making two albums, it was kind of a crazy, busy time. It’s been interesting! Being dedicated to the more creative aspect and not only the executive aspect has been very very inspiring, because it takes time. You forget the creative processes you really have to let them simmer. That’s been kind of a gift to stop and say “I’m not going to perform for two months. I’m going to just chill out and do alternative projects that don’t make me travel.”

*5! Do you have any advice for people who would like to pursue music or art? -=! I’m trying to think what I would have wanted to know or what I still don’t know, which is a lot. I do meet with a lot of girls interested in music in the Spanish-speaking countries. I help them with contracts and stuff and I’m always telling them that you can find so much information if you just sit

down and study, which helped me, I just Google shit, like how to understand publishing contracts. To have those tools you need to take advantage of asking, which I am not afraid about doing. In the music and entertainment industry you don’t want to show yourself vulnerable in any way but I am very adamant. If you want things that you don’t have, don’t wait for someone to come and help you, because you never know if that will happen. Educate yourself and also look at references. I’m always looking at other artists in whatever area that I admire. I try to understand how they get where they are and how they approach their creativity. In the more creative vein of stuff. I think it sounds kind of cheesy and Lady Gaga-ish, but be as authentic as you can. I think I was very lucky in my career, in the beginning, because I was limited by what I could do, but fortunately for me that kind of resulted in an identity that I

didn’t really even plan. It’s been such a cathartic, personal, visceral, organic thing that now with this third album (Tajo Abierto) I know what I need. I can go to LA and produce in a better way and become the musician I want to be versus what I can be. Not being surrounded by artists or musicians growing up I was never formally educated in the arts. I never knew it was a possibility to shape yourself and become what you want to become. That’s available to you and that’s an amazing thing that you don’t really notice until you begin to meet these musicians or artists that inspire you, who dedicate so much time to perfecting their craft and build this world whether it’s music or visual arts, that takes time and effort. It’s such discipline. That was a big revelation. It might take time but it’s important to do. So yeah, something like that.cn

RELEASING THE DOUBLE STANDARD BY ELLEN ZACARIAS & JULIA ESCOBOSA

Enter Free The Nipple - a movement against the censorship of female breasts. Spearheaded by filmmaker and activist Lina Esco, Free the Nipple is determined to strip the US and other western nations of their predisposition towards sexualizing the female body. Did you know that until the 1930s men weren’t allowed to free their nipples either? But in 1935, a group of four men walked around Coney Island topless, inciting a spree

54

of topless protests throughout the country (by men, only). History is now repeating itself, as it so often does. Eighty years seems like an absurd waiting period for women to catch up to their right to be topless, and men and women throughout the country are joining together to show their support for the long overdue equal right to go topless. With endless summers and beach babes for days, San Diego, California is an insanely appropriate setting for the fight to free the nipple. Anni Ma, a UC San Diego alumna, took it upon herself (and her beautiful boobs) to get things started in the Golden State. Staging her first protest solo in May 2015, and only a few weeks later coming together with over 100 students and professors, Anni is taking a stand against gender inequality and sexual objectification. College News catches up with Anni Ma and other supporters of the movement for a bit of insight into their motivations for standing up for women everywhere. You’ll be happy to know that it’s actually not illegal to go topless in California. That’s right Cali girls, feel free to flaunt ‘em….after carefully perusing your local municipal code, that is.

ith a high concentration of tomorrow’s leaders in one place constantly learning, evolving, and expanding their minds - college campuses have been a powerful place of change for decades. From war to racism, college students use peaceful protests as a way to raise awareness of important issues in society. One of the latest pressing issues in the world, largely instigated by Instagram’s censorship policies, is the matter of oppressing women to hide certain parts of their bodies. The most hotly contested body part is arguably the nipple, which men are free to bare without shame or legal repercussions. Women, on the other hand, are pressured to keep their nipples hidden.

Perspective From An Organizer Anni Ma Interview: Free the Nipple Campaign [Conducted on May 22, 2015 via Facebook Messenger by Ellen Zacarias] CN: You’re really brave for standing your

ground. I saw the video of you talking about that experience. I also notice that there is a GoTopless.org that inspired Free the Nipple. What sparked that moment in which you decided to participate in this movement for your solo protest?

AM: The reason why I did the first protest was because I was overall upset at the world for not standing up against all the injustices in the world...And simply I was sick and tired of people taking advantage of each other and being terrible towards others. So I had all this desire to stand up and say something, when others will let it go because it’s too difficult to do anything about it. Free the nipple came in when I saw mean comments on the Internet where people were sexualizing Scarlet Johansson’s erected nipple through her shirt and I wondered why that had to be a sexual thing at all... So I challenged myself to not wear a bra for a whole month and it felt weird! It felt like I wasn’t allowed to do

The idea that “if men see breasts they will lose their minds and rape people is absolutely insane

that in public. That people would stare and judge me. I felt shameful of myself...

CN: Did people notice? And how did your level of self-consciousness change by the end of the month?

AM: Then I wondered...Why am I feeling this shame??? Then I realized its because my society hyper sexualizes women’s nipples on the media. I found it disgusting that it’s actually illegal for women to be topless, but it’s totally cool for men to feel comfortable in their own body. I decided that this is something totally unfair in our society. I began to love myself; My body was beautiful. I decided that I was shaming myself because of what society was doing to us women. I read a post on 9gag that women don’t need to wear bras because the muscles need exercise to keep [them] from sagging .So I really wondered why we even needed to wear bras. Next time was to challenge why women can’t be topless

in a society where men can be. So I looked up the law on public indecency and realized that being topless is not illegal in California. So, I went on campus and decided that I NEEDED to do something today to challenge something unfair in the world I ask someone with nice handwriting to write “free the nipple” on my back and went and found a nice place to sit.

CN: What are your long-term goals with the campaign? I know you want to change people’s perspectives on the topic of female breasts. Was this a standalone event or will you be coordinating other organized protests in the future (via campus, in person, or website)? AM: My goal is to inspire students to think and to stand up for what they believe in and not feel like powerless to do anything about it because it’s too hard to change a system. It doesn’t have to be free the nipple. It can translate to anything else. I don’t believe one cause is bigger than another.

Perspective From a Male Supporter: Interview From Vince CN: Anni mentioned that one of the police officers cited danger as a reason for her to cover herself. What’s your response to this concern of the safety of women who bare their breasts?

Vince: The idea that “if men see breasts they will

lose their minds and rape people” is absolutely insane. Men are fully capable of controlling themselves and managing their sexuality. Sadly our world has done a horrendous job teaching our children and young men to do that, but it is their responsibility nonetheless. Finally, yes, there are bad people out there who look for excuses to assault other people-- and they will always find them. Whether it’s the visibility of a nipple or the length of a skirt or the look on someone’s face, bad people will always find a “reason” to do bad things. The solution is not to try to take away all of their excuses by hiding every part of their victim’s bodies, the solution is to A) educate people on how to manage their own sexuality and treat others with respect, and B) stay safe from people that will hurt them. Rape and sexual harassment is not really about sex, it’s about power. Making

it about the visibility of certain body parts is a losing battle.

CN: In your post on the event page on May 18,

2015, you identified yourself as “a heterosexual man who supports your message.” What is it like to be a heterosexual man in favor of “freeing the breasts”? Why do you support the message of the Free the Breasts campaign?

Vince: I am not suggesting that breasts should

be utterly stripped (no pun intended) of their sexuality. I am attracted to breasts and always will be. I’m also attracted to other parts of a woman’s body, like her lips or her hair, and I see those out in the open every single day. Seeing them doesn’t suddenly mean I don’t find them sexy. If men saw real boobs out on the street on a regular basis, not only would they have a more realistic mental image of how women’s bodies actually look, but they would also be able to view breasts in light of a whole woman’s body, not just her sexuality. This can only be a good thing. cn

A Growing Shopping Craze:

Online Consignment Shops BY ELLEN ZACARIAS

The process of selling and buying clothes from other fashionistas has been made easier through online consignment shops. You can buy heavily discounted brand-name clothing and sell stuff for a few bucks by using the website on your computer and your phone. Check out these three online consignment shops, which have proven to be very popular for buying and selling clothes.

Threadflip.com

Poshmark

Threadflip offers brands for women ranging from affordable ones such as Forever 21 and Gap to high-end designer labels like Chanel and Prada. Users can post and swap their items on their own or mail their clothes and accessories to Threadflip to be considered for sale. Negotiation is also an option - potential buyers can send offers to sellers within the system. Threadflip’s Full Service - With Threadflip’s Full Service Kits, you can send your new-with-tags or gently-used items to Threadflip free of charge. Threadflip will sift through your items and post your sellable items (photoshoot and shipping is done by them). On Threadflip’s website is a list of accepted brands and unaccepted brands. Layout is amazing - it’s easy to shop for fashionables by size, category, color, and price. You can also “love” an item for later reference and also updates (when the seller lowers the price).

Poshmark works as an online platform for people to sell their clothing. With each purchase, Poshmark takes a percentage of the profits. Anyone with a cell phone camera or a computer can post their stuff on the website. Any brand is accepted on Poshmark, but fakes and replicas are not allowed. Sales come in the form of Parties via the app, which happen for a specific time frame (hours). Shipping is paid for by the buyer. When a purchase is completed, Poshmark generates a prepaid mailing slip for the seller. cn

Thredup offers clothing, shoes, and accessories for women and children. With a wider target customer base, Thredup offers more variety in sizing: maternity, plus-sizes, and petite options are available. Their website is attractive, clean, and colorful. Thredup also offers a Kit in which you can send in your used clothes for evaluation for sale. Their website has a list of accepted and unaccepted brands as well as an estimator for how much you can get for a particular blouse, skirt, etc. Frequent coupons are offered to both new and continuing users. Available by mobile app for purchases, not for returns.

56

TIPS ON SELLING YOUR STUFF *

Post Well-Lit Photos - Use a clean background and good lighting for your photos.

*

Be specific about the item’s condition - Most sites prefer almost-new or excellent condition, but if you’re posting on your own, be specific about scuffs and imperfections.

*

Network - Most of these online consignment shops feature communities. Follow other users, and they might follow you back!

*

Ship soon after purchase - Always be prepared to ship your item soon. Your buyer is probably excited to receive their item!

OUTFITS TO IMPRESS ON THE FIRST DAY BY RACHEL GEIGER

As you head back to campus, you want to head back to your classes in style. However, it’s also important to factor in comfort. I know, you should definitely care about how you look, but don’t you want to be comfortable if you’re going to be sitting around in tiny desks all day? For these options, I’ve factored in both comfort and looking fashionable this fall. Note: these are some basic clothing suggestions, not completely put together outfits, but hopefully this will steer you in the right direction about where to find these items. 4H_P +YLZZLZ You can never lose when it comes to Maxi Dresses. This is more or less the go to trend and it’s not hard to see why. It’s a trendy style while also being comfortable and warm in case your classes are overly cold. It covers all your basics, and that’s why this is such a good outfit idea. -SV^LY *YV^UZ Admit it; Halloween is a time to judge. Whether judging costume contests or the amount of skin your ex is showing, the whole world is on trial on Halloween. Since

the Supreme Court is coming off a big year with marriage equality, why not honor them with a Halloween costume. It’s as easy as finding an old graduation gown around campus. Bonus points if you can find eight friends to join you. 7LUJPS :RPY[Z If you don’t want to break out a dress, go to this classy yet still eye catching style. You can never go wrong with this look. All you have to do is match it with a gorgeous looking top and you should be good to go. The good thing about this style is that your

options are on the limitless side to say the least. ;64: When it comes to the extreme debate of what shoes to wear, TOMS is clearly one of the best options to go with. Wearing flip flops could turn out to be a big hassle when walking around campus. TOMS are comfortable enough while also being visually appealing. There’s no need to go with high heels or any other shoe that could be ridiculously hard to walk in, just go with this option.

)SHaLY You can never go wrong with a stylish solid color blazer. It can be nice to have with you just in case of a chilly classroom. I think the blazer sends a fabulous professional and sophisticated message that is important for making a first impression. 3HJL +YLZZ I know this is a fairly broad choice, but this isn’t a hard item to find. I’m mostly talking about the lace dresses that you can find at a store like Forever 21. The white zip up lace dress from the store is my personal favorite. It has an innocent but playful vibe that’s sure to turn some heads in the process. (U`[OPUN KLUPT You can’t go wrong with a little bit of denim in your life. I recommend denim shorts that aren’t too shorts. What I mean is that an outfit like booty denim shorts can send a different message than what you might be going for. Plus, who really wants to be cold in class? =LYH )YHKSL` )HJRWHJR You see these at college campus all across the county. I think it’s pretty much a must have if you don’t have one already. =HUZ I know I said that TOMS is the obvious footwear option, but if you’re looking for more protection for your feet, Vans is your best bet when it comes to sneakers. They provide you with a lot of support while also being very attractive shoes. What more could you ask for really?

© 123R F

9VTWLYZ This might seem like a weird option, but who doesn’t like rompers? There’s a ton of options available to you at many trendy stores so be sure to check it out! cn

Go Chic This Fall With These

Fashion Ideas BY JULIA ESCOBOSA

These trends are sure to turn heads during this Fall season.

Geo-Graphic

White Hot Don’t listen to your grandmother, you can totally wear white after labor day. Fall 2015 brings with it a bevy of warmer white options from optic white to ecru. Go snowy from head to toe to stand out from the crowd or blend into the natural landscape.

Bad(ass) Romance Ruffles, lace, and all things girly are holding their own this fall with sassy silhouettes and smart color combinations. Pair a lacy romper with opaque tights and ankle boots to transition short options to colder weather.

Whether or not you have fond memories of your geometry class days, take a cue from your high school textbooks and play with shapes and colors. Geometric prints are shaping up to be a staple trend for 2015 with patterns to suit every preference.

CBGB & OMFUG While the legendary club on The Bowery in NYC may be just a memory, the styles favored by the musicians who brought the club to life are still going strong. This fall, channel your inner Joan Jett or Debbie Harry and rock your wardrobe. Opt for sleeveless layering pieces to easily transition with the weather.

Old Boys Club Tailored trousers and smart suits are making a comeback for the ladies this fall. Head back to class and give classic favorites like houndstooth and herringbone another go.

Eastern Energy Don’t fret flower children; reminisce about Coachella and Bonnaroo year round with fall’s answer to festival fashions. Eastern influences are everywhere this season with interesting textiles and exotic prints.

Shear Genius This cold weather staple is fighting its way from keeping your coats warm inside to making them fashion forward on the outside.

Overcoats Stay toasty while staying on trend. This season, look for a three-quarter length overcoat in a neutral color to pair with everything from holiday best to your study session joggers.

Turtle Power Zoot Yourself Mix and match period pieces with modern aesthetics for an on trend blast from the past. This fall take your historical inspiration from the Zoot Suiters and seek out a wide leg, high waist, and tapered ankle.

Not a scarf kind of guy? Stock up on cozy turtlenecks for chic layering. With a variety of fabric options from lightweight jersey to heavy wool knits, there’s a style for every winter climate.

Red, Red Wine Equally effective for making a statement and hiding the stain from the time that girl sloshed her wine on your new duds. Shades of burgundy are everywhere this season, making it easy to find a flattering look for any body type or skin tone. No crying over spilled pinot this fall!

FASHION | DIY Dorm Decor

College Essentials 101:

Dorm Décor Ideas to Make Your Space Yours BY DANIELLE DABRIO-CARROLL

That time of year again is coming up fast, summer is ending (the horror), your professors are sending out assignment emails, and everyone’s coming back to campus. So of course that means that it’s also time for you to go back to your good old dorm, or move into one for the first time. This is a list of dorm room décor that you can use as a starting point to give you some ideas of how you can dominate your living area.

First thing you might get tired of seeing are those drab white and beige walls that are going to be surrounding you constantly. Even though you can’t paint or put up wall paper, here are some great ways to add some color and life blandness. Wall Decals- You can find them in any Target or Walmart with a huge selection to choose from including patterns, pictures, and wording. They’re easy to remove when it’s time to pack up and don’t leave any damage to the walls when they come off.

Washi Tape Greatest thing that every dorm needs if you want to make anything pop and stand out. Strong and durable while at the same time light and pretty, and it comes in various sizes and patterns. On the Door- You can use the removable washi tape to make different shapes or patterns on the exterior or interior of your dorm door.

Inspiration Board- We all should have one to keep us motivated and remind us what we’re working for. Post some Photoshopped pictures of you in your cap and gown, future vacation spots, aspiring outfits, your future apartment/loft in New York, a few inspirational words, and etc. cn

HOW TO MAKE A DIY PHOTO PROJECTOR Step 1: Trace a Hole on the Box- A shoebox or similar will work great for your new projector, trace the circle of the magnifying glass. Step 2: Cut a Hole in That Box- Cut out the inside of the circle you just traced. Step 3: Attach Your Lens- Use the tape to attach the lens to the shoebox and make sure it stays inside the hole that was cut out.

DIY Picture Frames for Posters- Don’t just want to stick your posters on your boring wall? Use the washi tape to frame the posters with creative colors and designs. This add flair to your posters and make your wall look more attractive.

Step 4: Take a Stand- You need your phone to be able to stand on its own in the box.

Décor

Step 6: Finding Focus- Move the phone forward or back in order to get the right focus on the wall, also don’t be afraid to make the screen brighter so you can get the best view.

Then you just have the items that have the purpose of just making your space look good.

66

Marquee Letters- With every letter and even some symbols being available, spell it out and light it up. These are a cool way or adding soft extra lighting without it being overpowering. You can also spell out your nickname over your bed… which is a better reason to get them.

Step 5: Flip Your Screen- Your pone needs to be in the landscape position not upright.
