Connect through Vensters HELENE LEONARD

V

ensters is an annual event where thousands of first year Maties gather and put their various talents on display for the Stellenbosch community. Stellenbosch University (SU) residences and private student organisations (PSOs) collaborate to bring audiences a vibrant and entertaining performance, which will be connected with the social impact projects all first year students are involved in throughout the year. Each residence and PSO choose their own theme, related to their social impact project, and create a performance that is entertaining while also conveying a message of social awareness. This event encourages students to engage more in critical discussions. Students learn from the “get go” to be more involved in society. Stalls and the food walk in Victoria Street will start doing business from 16:30 on Friday, but the Venster performances will only start from 18:00 and will continue until 22:00. Many SU students support their fellow first years through watching Vensters. Over 40 PSOs and residences take part in this event. First years get the opportunity to showcase themselves on stage and this also creates a space for students to grow in their confidence. Students engage with topical social and economic issues that hinder our society. Through Vensters students from different backgrounds will come to-

Vensters is all about creating an environment where students get challenged with difficult societal problems and, through a festive and entertaining manner, first years are taught what it means to be a citizen in society. According to Cailin Perrie, chair of Connect, Vensters is a “fundraising event where the proceedings go to the participating residences and PSOs”. The money is then used for various

“social upliftment projects”. Perrie further says that the focus of this year’s Vensters is on making good choices to improve society. “Each Vensters partnership was thus challenged to add to the phrase ‘choose to’, for example ‘choose to be sustainable’,” she said. The residences Dagbreek and Nerina chose the theme ‘choose to change the world’, while Venustia and Goldfields will have as their theme ‘choose to be you’.

Through choosing such inspiring themes, students develope a sense understanding of the socio-political problems and ever growing changewithin their society. Vensters officially marks the end of the first years orientation. Senior students have been moving into Stellenbosch and their residences since the 26 of January and are expected to support their fellow first years during Vensters. Lectures for most SU students will start on Monday 4 February.

Matieland is egter nie net ’n handelskool nie.

Welcome! Wamkelekile!

T

he past four years proved that students would do anything to fight for that in which they believe. Here are the major movements over the last four years that got the most media coverage:

Open Stellenbosch Open Stellenbosch began in 2015 when a group of students, who described themselves on their Facebook page as “a collective interested in purging the oppressive remnants of apartheid in pursuit of a truly African University”, organized a protest in order to boost English as the dominant language at Stellenbosch University (SU). This followed after SU’s council rejected the rector’s management team’s proposal to change 2014’s language policy which stated that English and Afrikaans should have equal status at the university. The group of students wanted the university to change the main language of education to English to promote inclusivity at the university. Prof Wim de Villiers, the vicechancellor of SU, and his management team, issued an official statement on 12 November 2015, in which it was stated that language shall “no longer form a barrier to learning opportunities”. De Villiers further stated that the new language policy will implement English as SU’s official language of instruction, and that all learning material will be made available in all other feasible languages, as requested by students.

Fees Must Fall This was a country-wide, student-led protest that began in October 2015 at Rhodes University. On Monday 12 September 2016, Fees Must Fall protesters occupied the SU Library and vowed to stay there

until the university’s vice chancellor, Prof Wim de Villiers, met with them to discuss free education and zero fee increases in the following year (2017). The BA, Commerce and Law faculties were also shut down on 10 October. As this was during exam time, the protesters also disrupted test venues. A video taken by Mbedzi Lugisani, posted on 9 September 2016, showed a test being interrupted in the RW Wilcocks building. The video shows tests being ripped apart and protestors dancing on tables. There was also a petrol bomb thrown at the Engineering building on 11 October, but no damage was done. Student protesters all over the country caused damage estimated at R300 million. Blade Nzimande, minister of Higher Education and Training in 2016, proposed an increase of 8% student fees in 2017. Nzimande stated that universities can independently determine the amount of increase in university tuition, but said that universities should not exceed an 8% increase. De Villiers addressed protesting students on the Rooiplein on 17 September 2016 and, in response to Nzimande’s statement, said the university will include the 8% increase in tuition for 2017 because a 0% fee increase was not feasible for the university.

SLUT Walk SLUT is an acronym for Start Letting Us Talk, and the SLUT Walk was created in 2017 to raise awareness on gender inequality, rape culture and gender-based violence. On Wednesday 8 March 2017, a group of approximately 100 students marched down Victoria and Bosman streets. Prof Amanda Gouws, a political science lecturer at SU, described the purpose of the movement as women who want to “claim back their bodies and sexuality”. Gouws explained in an article

appearing in Die Matie of 15 March 2017, that the goal of the march is to “say that no matter what women wear, or if they walk naked, they are not asking to be raped”. The event was organized by the Womxn Empowerment Committee of Metanoia residence in 2017, and according to Tegan Snyman, a participant of the SLUT Walk, the idea originated in Canada where the first thing a woman was asked after she was raped, was what she was wearing at the time of the incident. Move4Food Move4Food was born when students in collaboration with the Alumni office decided to help students who don’t have the financial resources to afford food. The project started in September 2018, and aimed to raise R10 million in financial and non-perishable food donations in 100 days. The Engineering Without Borders society built a giant lunchbox in The Neelsie where students could donate non-perishable food items for students in need. Cheryl Benade, Donor Relations manager at SU was the coordinator of the event, and said that “food allowances start to run out during the end of the year, and this is even worse because it is during exam times when nutrition is a key factor in success.” This was the reason she decided to organised the event. The campaign raised money in collaboration with a Cape Town Marathon crowdfunding campaign, where even De Villiers participated, by cycling in the Cape Town Marathon, to raise money for the movement. A 24-hour spin-a-thon was also held in The Neelsie, where it costed each participant R20 to cycle for ten minutes. All of the money raised during the event was contributed to the Move4Food funds.

S

ince the first use of a hashtag in 2007, this symbol has become synonymous with the trends of the world, ranging from memes (humorous images, videos, and texts which are varied and spread throughout the internet) to social activism. These hashtags are used to draw attention to catch phrases that explain social media movements. Through hashtag trending on social media, hashtag movements are an effective means for online communication. While not everyone utilised these hashtags in the same way, many are relevant to student life here at Stellenbosch University (SU). With this in mind, below are some of the hashtag trends relevant to SU, as well as an explanation of what the

respective movements outline. #FeesMustFall This hashtag began in 2015 in response to nationwide fee increases at universities and demanded that the fees decrease (fall) so that those who were struggling financially could have access to tertiary education. This social media movement was a call to bring attention to dissatisfaction with fee increase. Because of the popularity of this movement amongst protestors, the fee increase was inevitably cancelled. At the end of 2017, former president Jacob Zuma declared free tertiary education for the new first year students from families that earned less than R350 000 per year. However, this came after years of highly controversial protesting. In response to the protest method, Pro

Events Security Services were utilised here at SU by, becoming known informally as “the men in black”. #MeToo In October 2017, people of all races, genders, sexualities, and beliefs, began sharing their experiences of alleged sexual harassment and sexual assault. Some preferred to share this hashtag because they felt strongly about the message, while others turned to anonymous online forums to voice their personal experiences. Regardless, the message amongst protestors remained the same: solidarity against the widespread harassment. What made this hashtag so poignant was that it was not only celebrities such as Lady Gaga, America Ferrera, and Jensen Ackles who shared the tag, but friends, family, and classmates

who came forward. #MenAreTrash As with #MeToo, in response to the violence committed against women in 2016, this hashtag took the stand that #MenAreTrash. While some saw it as a vastly generalising statement that dragged an entire gender down, others supported it for turning the tables on the derogatory treatment of women in the past. Further, the movement called for every man to re-evaluate his own behaviour. The hashtag was often met with responses of #NotAllMen, shared by individuals interpreting the movement as targeting specific men instead of what the protestors interpreted as an oppressive system. This countermovement was again resisted with

#YesAllWomen, which was yet again countered by #NotAllWomen. This was shared by women who are against the #MenAreTrash tag.

#SaveWater Since 2015 the Western Cape has been experiencing water shortages, and in May 2017 the government recognised it as the worst drought in a century. Water restrictions have been put in place, but the possibility of a Day Zero, where the majority of the Western Cape municipal water is cut off on account of the shortage, still looms. What this hashtag addresses is the responsibility of each citizen to conserve water and not go beyond their daily allowance. It is often paired with the hashtag #ThinkWater.

Lidmaatskap by hierdie vereniging

atieland is enige student se droomland.

Maak ’n draai by Coetzenburg se

bekende dam.

rustige kuiertjie. Woon ’n koshuisfunksie by. Gaan klim ’n berg. Wees aktief. Hier is so baie berge. Maak ’n draai by Opskop. Gaan drink dooswyn by Bohemia. Dit is dalk net die oplossing vir ’n slegte week of ’n hartseer break-up. Gaan kyk iets by die formidabele US Woordfees.

How to make sure you are oppit with the current Stellies slang LISA DE CLERCQ

If you want to connect with someone you need to speak their language. Stellenbosch University students speak at least a semi-original slang. So, if you don’t want to miss out on all the spice or end up going out to “town” with your grocery list, here is a list of key words to help you get “oppit” with Stellies slang. The Bib: Also known as “The library” is the home of knowledge and diligently studying students, found beneath the Rooiplein. B•A build•ing: Also known as “Lettere en Sosiale Wetenskappe” according to your exam timetable.

This is the place for pink hair and BA-broodjies.

The Square: The location of Stellenbosch’s mainstream clubs.

HE•MIS: A minimum requirement for staying in the university and in your parent’s will.

C•O•B: Also known as a slippery slope. The money you can load onto your student account that allows you to “pay” with your student card at most places in the Neelsie and residence deli’s.

Sec•ond Opp: Also known as “her” is an unfortunate event that occurs when a student had a rough exam paper. Some consider it a mercy, others consider it a burden. A “her” might in some instances keep you from you long holiday. Die Laan: The picturesque avenue that runs along the Eerste River. Prime location for romantic encounters or, for the less love fortunate.

STUDENTELEWE

SU lecture room manners JADE KERCHHOFF

S

tudents typically arrive at their classroom venue already on edge. There is a laundry-list of possible reasons why (usually the fact that they have to be there in the first place) you don’t want to be in class. To make matters worse, besides factors that are beyond our control, such as limited legroom and uncomfortably close seats, the classroom environment is made evermore unfavourable at times. Many students can be a hazzard zone for ridiculousness.

1. “A social misunderstanding”

There seems to be social misunderstandings regarding what constitutes lecture hall etiquette. With the particularly short fuse and ego-fragility notions of the common student, being seated next to someone eating really cheesy-smelling snacks is extremely unpleasant. Also, being the culprit of a social blunder with a lecturer, is one among many scenarios universally preferred to be avoided at all costs. The following are therefore a few nationally, if not globally, recognized rules by which to abide, to ensure a (somewhat) harmonious hour of classroom confinement.

2. “Not just any seat”

If you plan to occupy a seat in an as of yet empty row, do not seat yourself at the very end. This is an uncomfortable seat for all the students. It is uncomfortable to take the first seat before the class starts. Take it from someone who knows. The students, who now have to squeeze past you to reach the other empty seats in a row, do not like it in any way. You are not a gatekeeper, really! Don't be one of those students.

3. “Be punctual”

Punctuality is a virtue, lost among millennials. Any student who arrives late needs to adhere to the very infamous “walk of shame”, to get to their place. Let’s revive punctuality? And let’s be honest, the late comers never really concentrate in class. After the dramatic entrance a late comer must focus on keeping a straight face, ever since the whole classroom’s focus is turned to them.

4. “Do not come to class sick, please?”

Please get your runny nose or postnasal drip under control before entering the classroom. The rest of the class would appreciate your consideration if you do not give your contagious germs to them. Rather go to Campus Health, please and thank you.

5. “Couple goals, no goals”

No, we do not think that the PDA with your campus-crush is ‘goals’. No one actually cares about your romantic love life. The classroom also happens to be the wrong place to discuss your intimate relationship or weekend drama. There are honestly more important things in life. Those things happen to be work and paying attention during class.

6. “The yes ma’am rule”

Adhere to a school environment’s maxim of strictly using just teacherstudent communication. You should thus refrain from addressing lecturers by their first names under all circumstances. Rather make use of deferent pronouns such as ‘ma’am’, ‘sir’, ‘miss’, ‘mister’, ‘professor’ etc.

7. “Last question, please”

Absolutely no questions in the last two minutes of class, please.

Lecturers love to answer questions that get asked in the last minutes of class. Once a lecturer gets asked a question, they will go on explaining the answer for at least another, extra ten minutes. And the whole class has to wait for the lecturer’s answer. If you really ask a smart question, the lecturer might keep the class for even longer.

8. “Pick up that gum of yours”

Please leave with your litter (that includes the gum you’ve stuck under the desk/seat). It is rude to litter. No one wants to touch your gum under the seat. Leave the classroom in the state that you have found it. It is called respecting ones peers.

Students should preferably refrain from sitting at the end of an empty row. Photos: Armin Prinsloo

9. “Private conversations for private spaces”

Keep private conversations for a private environment. No one wants to hear about your crazy night out. Everyone keeps to their own during lectures. Be careful what you say in class, the person you are gossiping about might be behind you.

Students being ill-mannered during a lecture.

10. “Watch your tone”

Remember that the views expressed in a lecture series are not necessarily the lecturer’s own; if you therefore have an opinion that differs, please watch your tone. And do no write your opinion in an argumentative essay. It is a big trap when you are asked to do that. The lecturers usually like to read their own opinion in essays. That will get you good marks.

“It is a privilege”

Lastly, actually attend your classes and make sure you’re prepared. Education is a privilege.

Campus Closet: a basic guide for students This being Stellenbosch University’s (SU) opening week with all the first year students arriving, Linné du Preez put together a fashion guide for them.

CHEETAHLICIOUS

CHUNKY SNEAKERS

MELLOW YELLOW

CHIC MINI HEEL

DOTTY OR STRIPEY

Embracing your inner cheetah girl. There are rumours, via the grape vine, that the cheetah print is coming back in 2019. And it will be bigger and better than ever. Therefore, this is the look to wow in this year. Remember to keep the ‘less is more’ approach in mind. Don’t go full out cheetah! Minimum animal print is always the best way to go. Keep your eyes open in the shops for the cheetah print to ensure that your closet stays cheetahlicious up to date.

For the last couple of years sneakers have been extremely popular on campus, for both male and female students. Sneakers aren’t just something you wear during the winter to keep your toes warm.It is great for casual days on campus, and even more perfect for a night out in town. There is such a vast variety of sneakers that are seen on campus, in all forms, colours and brands. Some of the most popular sneakers are Vans, Adidas Superstar, and any white sneakers or a sneaker with a thick sole.

If you like to make a statement and if you don’t mind eyes fixed on you when entering a room, then don’t be afraid to rock this look. Yellow is actually the opposite of mellow, it is rather unapologetically intense and out there. One can find yellow dresses, pants, shirts, skirts and accessories such as earrings and scrunchies in store. The clothing pieces are also available in different shades of yellow so that you can find the perfect shade to match your skin tone and hair colour.

Believe it or not but you can actually wear heels on campus. Even though we all know that heels are not the most practical or comfortable shoes to wear for a long day on your feet, it is a great fashion statement and pretty. Wearing sandals or pumps with a small heel is just as comfortable as flats. The shoe ties the outfit together in a very chic way. These shoes give you the best of both worlds and will make you the style envy of all your friends.

Polka dots and stripes are timeless classics. They are both bold patterns that can be tricky to pull off. If you want to try the look for yourself, pair your polka dot shirt with a plain pair of jeans. A plain pair of jeans are great to wear with almost everything. If you are rocking a colourful pair of stripy pants wear it with a plain black or white shirt. This will allow the dotty or stripy piece of clothing to do the talking part. And it is a great accent for any event.

Meer as net klein Saterdag Matieland bied iets vir almal. René Esterhuyse het gaan kyk na verskillende aktiwiteite in en om Stellenbosch Last Thursdays By die Konservatorium

A

Woordfees

Music in the Park

Naweekmarkies

Kaartjies beloop R375. Die Spier Wynplaas bied ook Twilight Runs aan. Daar is verskillende roetes, soos die 5 km (R60) of 10 km (R100) of ’n 3 km pretdraf (R30).

DAG & NAG

Dag & Nag Maties make noise on music scene

Willow-Ruby van der Berg sat down with some of the finest bands that Stellenbosch has to offer

Dope Folks

If you have jammed along to their songs in places like Mystics, then you’ll know that this all Maties group is a lovely tapestry of different sounds and emotions. “Our songs are a diverse blend of indie-rock, folk, punk and psych, with emotive lyricism and punchy choruses. The goal is not just to put on a show, but take you on a jivey journey

of optimistic nihilism through sound and storytelling,” says MC van Coller, the vocalist and rhythm guitarist. The band started with Van Coller and Sebastian Dorrington, lead guitarist and backing vocals, doing a few acoustic gigs. Later on they asked Donald Schriefer, bassist and backing vocals, whether he wanted to join them. Schriefer was lost in love and

they promised that music would be the ultimate cure. According to them, Alex Burger, the drummer, was always part of the band, but he just didn’t know it. They released their single, “He said she said”, on Apple Music in 2018 and their EP will come out in March. You can also head over to Bohemia on 7 February to catch them live. The night is sure to be dope, folks.

Noblemen

They won the battle of the bands at Mercury in 2018 and now they’re winning over the hearts of Stellenbosch. “Our sound is a new take on indierock, a more South African take, which has all different influences as we are a very diverse band musically and literally. When you look at us you’ll see,” says Jay Linn Rabie, the lead vocalist. Rabie first started out as a solo artist and after a while he was asked to open for Jack Parow. “The organisers said I’ll need to get a band. So I said: sweet, I’ll do it. I got

no band, but I’ll get a band together and that’s how Noblemen started. It’s been groovy ever since,” says Rabie. The band members behind Noblemen are Rabie on vocals, Ruan de Jager and Darren de Bruyn on guitar, Elron van der Berg on the Bass and Dirkie Joubert on the drums. They are using the prize money that they won from the battle of the bands to record their first 5-track EP that is coming out in March. You can also groove out to their tunes at Aandklas on 13 February.

This dynamic duo knows how to put on an intimate performance like no other. With their rock, surf-rock, folk and alternative covers they are widely recognised, especially by those who frequently rock up at Bohemia or Aandklas. “We are known for our unique interpretation to make songs our own and delivering a quality intimate live performance,” says Francois Roux, the founding member of the band. Originally the band started in February 2017 with two other members, but they split up at the end of 2017. Roux then approached Storm Opper-

man to revamp The Who project. “The name was a suggestion from one of our mates. The Stinging Roger is known as the last part of a joint as it stings your lip,” says Roux. Since their remodeling, the band has topped the World Wide New & Hot charts on Soundcloud for their cover singles that they have released there. These two are high in demand in Stellenbosch during February and you can check them out at the following places: 3 February at Bohemia, 16 February at the Bohemia Birthday and 20 February at Aandklas.

his year, the first years experienced something completely different from previous years’ dream launches. In previous years, first year students would write their dreams on balloons filled with helium and let go of the balloons in celebration of the start of a new journey on which they’ll be on their way to accomplishing these dreams. This year, however, first year students gathered at Danie Craven for the official welcoming and opening with their respective residences and PSOs. Thereafter they took a commutative aerial picture in the shape of ‘2019’ on the rugby field. After the formal proceedings, the students partook in a walk from the stadium to Victoria Street, where they wrote down their dreams on dream cards that the university supplied and inserted them on the trees decorated to

BORN IN 2000 Most of the first year students from this year’s class were bron in 2000. Photo: Supplied represent each cluster. Cailin Perrie, chairperson of Connect 2019, explained that the reason behind abolishment the balloon launching was due to environmental factors. It remained important to create a moment in which the first years can make their dreams real in

their own eyes. “It has been proven that when one writes down their dream and also make their dream public, they are more likely to come true. I definitely think the dream walk will be the way forward in years to come,” said Perrie. Prof Wim de Villiers, Rector and

vice-chancellor, along with Carli van Wyk, SRC-chairperson, joined the approximately 5 300 first year students by also taking part in the walk and writing their dreams down in Victoria Street. During the official welcoming Van Wyk emphasised the importance of

making the most of the opportunities that arise. “Stellenbosch University is the platform to not only be a graduate but to be a global citizen,” she said. Perrie is also of the opinion that the dream walk was an “amazing success”. She further explained that she has heard many first years retelling the moments they shared at the event and saying how the event made them feel welcomed into the Matie community. From the university’s point of view, Perrie explained that they want students to not only gain a degree, but also learn more about pushing themselves to achieve all the dreams they set out to. Perrie also reminisced about the dream launch in her first year by saying: “It was a turning point in my life and I hope it will continue to be for many more first year students to come.” The official welcoming programme will come to and end this weekend after Vensters takes place on Friday.

Enige US klere of ander drag is welkom.

Spur of Steers maak gewoonlik ’n verskeining. Halftyd is hul besigste tye, so wees maar gewaarsku.

POKKEL EN PROF Hierdie twee sorg vir ’n lekker gees by elke Varsitybeker-geleentheid.

Tutu’s is altyd ’n klassieke wenner of daardie Hawaii-blomme.

Spotlight on secret sports at Stellenbosch University LEMUEL BLIGNAUT & ANKE VAN DER MERWE

Starting your studies at university can be daunting. Things are different here than at home, and this includes the sports. A wide variety of sporting codes are offered at Stellenbosch University (SU). The following is a summary of the lesser known sports at Maties that cater to all tastes. Gymnastics You’ll see them around campus, all those people walking around on their hands just so you can easily read the upside-down print on their top that says: “This is my handstand hoodie.” Does this pique your interest? Mari van der Westhuizen, vice-chair for Maties Gymnastics says “We strive to be open and welcoming to all new members! We emphasize ‘the gymnastics family’, where you don’t just gain new skills, but also new friends.” The club practices Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 7-9 pm at the Van Der Stel sports grounds. Training is not compulsory, and the gymnasts can train how often it suits them. All the competitions are non-compulsory but are an amazing experience!

Ultimate frisbee Your favourite beach activity is an official Olympic sport, and Maties has a team right here on campus. Two teams of seven players each compete on a playing field about the size of a narrow football field. At opposite sides of the field, the scoring areas are situated, which are called the ‘end zones’. A team scores if one of their players catches the frisbee in the end zone. There is no physical contact and teams consist of men and women. Van Zyl Venter, captain of the mens first team, says the atmosphere at the club is “light-hearted but competitive”. For Summer League they compete almost every Monday evening at either Stellenbosch, Goldfields’ field for matches, or in Cape Town like UCT, Pinelands or Wineberg. Rowing “At Maties Rowing, camaraderie comes even before competition.” So says Byron Mühlberg, captain of the men’s rowing team. He adds “while our athletes train very hard, and while we take competition very seriously, the major ethos for which Maties Rowing

is known instead is for its gees. Good sportsmanship and engagement between members of our crew is the thing which sets Maties Rowing apart. Maties Rowing trains six days per week, at the gym, or the Rowing clubhouse at Coetzenburg, and over weekends they train at the Eikenhof dam. Byron adds “students are completely free to determine to what extent they’d like to participate in the training schedule, depending on their personal goals / level of commitment.” Fencing An Olympic sport, and once the mark of a true gentleman, Fencing is a clash of speed and skill. Albert Nothnagel, chairman of the club says “Maties Fencing is a place where students of all backgrounds and skill levels can come together and fence, have a good time and build friendships.” There are at least four regional competitions every year, as well as several interclub events throughout the year. The club also wants to send a team to the USSA intervarsity competition at the end of the year. Volleyball Our volleyball players have the great

The sand courts are situated at the hockey astros, so go and have a jol and get a chance to be a part of one of the most fun sports you’ll ever learn.

Maties has two excellent beach courts, where practises take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 17:30 to 20:00. The action on the indoor courts take place on Fridays and Saturdays. There are about 65 registered players and there is always space for more. No experience necessary. According to Kiran Maharaj, manager of the Active Lifestyle Unit, volleyball is amazing. There is a sense of brotherhood and family. “And it’s a great excuse to go to the beach” laughed Maharaj.

BTK Should you ever pluck up the courage to venture up into the darkest corners of the Neelsie, you’ll find a door, with the letters BTK on it. This isn’t part of some old sign that has worn off, this is the home of our Berg- en Toerklub (BTK), which has been allowing Maties to experience the wonders of nature for themselves since 1928. Louw van den Heever, the chairman of the BTK says “The BTK has taught me a lot of things. Amongst the most important, the BTK has taught me how to love people and the BTK has taught me the value of tradition. Through the BTK as a platform I have made friends that I will probably share memories/stories with for life. The BTK is however just a society and a society does not change your life, but its people does.” “By joining the BTK you are opening a door to an incredible adventure. You will laugh more than you would think possible,” he adds.

Raak aktief in die buitelig Grab your bike and test your skills on the beautiful and sometimes challenging trails on Coetzenburg Mountain. The mountain biking championships was held there last year and the trails are still there for everyone to enjoy. Enjoy the scenic views at Hangbrug at Eersterivier. Swimming is no longer allowed, but the views are still great for a light hike or picnic. Park runs are in no shortage in Stellenbosch and the surrounding area. Get up early on a Saturday and get those legs moving. It is only 5km! Treat yourself afterwards with a nice lunch, you deserve it. Get any form of wheels and enjoy Stellenbosch under the stars. Longboarding or cycling with friends at night-time is a definite highlight for any outdoor enthusiast. Make sure to stay safe and try to keep in streets that are not remote, such as Victoria and Plein Street. Cover your bike with fairy lights to give it that extra spark. Vang goeie gees Attend a Varsity Cup game in full maroon Matie outfits. Remember to

check out the rugby, hockey, netball and other teams involved. Verkeer sosiaal Wine tasting or any kind of tasting is a regular activity for many students. There are other options like gin and champagne tasting around the area. A few internet searches will lead you on this great path. Woon geleenthede by met lekker musiek en aktiwiteite by koshuise. Simonsberg Met, Kwottie Electro by Wilgenhof, Quadnaval en Straatmyl by Dagbreek, Repfees by Helderberg, Damestouch by Eendrag en Fort Knox by Huis Visser is maar net ’n paar hoogtepunte.

Onthou van akademie Spend the night in the SS/Humarga/Narga or Farga. It is not recommended, but you’ll get semi bragging rights.

Wees regte Maties And finally. Legend has it that there are three things that make you a true Matie. 1. Kiss someone in Die Laan. 2. Let an acorn fall on your head. 3. Get a rewrite. Here is for sterre after all. The last one is not recommended, but life happens. Do not stress about it. Take a deep breath and enjoy the outdoors and all the fun things that Stellenbosch and Maties has to offer. You are only a student once, so enjoy every moment. Tough and good times lie ahead.
