Quest

What’s Kylie having for breakfast?

1 Read the text and mark all breakfast foods in yellow.

Kylie is getting ready for her first day at work. She is going to work in a pub in Canterbury. Before she leaves, Kylie is having breakfast. She takes some fruit and yoghurt out of the fridge. And some vegemite and toast, of course.

Sarah, Pat, Marlon and Angus are looking on.

Sarah Don’t you want some bacon and eggs, with sausages?

Kylie No, thank you. A full English breakfast is a little too much for my stomach. I prefer a vegemite toast.

Harpal What is vegemite?

Kylie Well, that’s kind of hard to explain. It’s brown, and salty, and...

Sarah Hmm, I’m not so sure about this…

Angus I always have porridge for breakfast, that gets you going!

Marlon What’s porridge?

Angus It’s oatmeal with milk.

Marlon No, thanks.

Pat What do you have for breakfast, then?

Marlon Fried dumplings and Jamaican hot chocolate tea are my favourite.

Pat Isn’t it strange that we all have different breakfasts? I like pancakes with maple syrup!

Kylie Well, we should try it all at least once. That’s what my mum is always telling me. Anyway, I have to go. I don’t want to be late on my first day, do I?

Sarah Sure. Have a nice day!

What do you usually have for breakfast? Explain.

I usually have … for breakfast.

What’s Kylie doing today?

1 Kylie is going to work as a waitress in The Millers Arms, a pub in Canterbury. Read all about her new workplace and answer the questions.

You find The Millers Arms in the centre of the cathedral city of Canterbury, making it a perfect base for visitors.

The pub is a short walk from Canterbury Cathedral and the city’s cobbled medieval streets, full of Tudor-beamed shops.

The Millers Arms was built in 1826 to serve local mill workers and overlooks the Cathedral and the site of the old mill. The pub, which includes 11 en-suite rooms, has been fully refurbished with modern facilities while retaining its character.

In 1933, there was a fire in the mill next to the pub. A beam fell on the pub and the firemen had to decide which building they would save: the mill or the pub. As the pub is still there today, you know the choice they made.

Popular with the local community as well as visitors, today The Millers Arms hosts quiz nights, a book club and a theatre society.

Customers can enjoy a meal in the restaurant, warm themselves by the fireplace or relax in the attractive courtyard garden.

Kylie’s first day as a waitress

1 Landlord Jack shows Kylie around The Millers Arms. Read the dialogue and mark the drinks you can order at this pub.

Landlord Jack Hello Kylie, welcome to The Millers Arms

Kylie Thank you, Sir.

Landlord Jack Now, let me show you around so I can tell you what you are going to do.

Kylie Great! I’m very curious.

Landlord Jack This is the bar. Here you are going to serve drinks to the customers. You are going to be a barmaid.

Kylie What can the customers order here?

Landlord Jack We offer different soft drinks. Those are drinks with no alcohol. The most popular are coke, either diet or regular, and lemonade. Mineral water can be either still or sparkling. You can also order tap water, which is free of charge. If you want to order beer, you have a choice between three kinds: lager, bitter and stout. You order either a pint (50 cl) or half a pint (25 cl). You also have a choice between draught and bottled or packaged beer. Most pubs also offer a large choice of gins and whiskies. If you want to drink a cocktail, you need to go to a cocktail bar. If you feel peckish, you can order a bag of crisps or salty nuts.

Kylie So many different kinds of drinks! I hope I will remember them all.

Landlord Jack I’m sure you will. And you can always use the menu card if you are in doubt. You are also going to work as a waitress.

Kylie I am going to like this. I like meeting people.

Landlord Jack Excellent! And don’t forget to inform the customers about today’s special. Today, it’s fish and chips.

Landlord Jack Tomorrow, you are going to work in the kitchen. Let me show you.

Kylie Wow, what a big kitchen!

Landlord Jack It is, isn’t it? You must know that The Millers Arms is not only a pub, but also a hotel and a restaurant. Now, this is chef Harry.

Kylie How do you do, chef.

Chef Harry Hello, Kylie. Nice to meet you. Are you going to enjoy your stay?

Kylie I’m sure I’m going to, chef.

Chef Harry Tomorrow, I’m going to show you around the kitchen. Is that OK?

PRESENT SIMPLE

PRESENT CONTINUOUS

I work. I am working.

You work. You are working.

He works. He is working. She works. She is working.

It works. It is working.

We work. We are working.

You work. You are working. They work. They are working.

Short forms en long forms van ‘to be’

in informeel taalgebruik worden vaak samengetrokken vormen van ‘to be’ gebruikt.

LONG FORM SHORT FORM

I am (not) sailing to Dover now. I’m (not) sailing to Dover now. You are (not) cooking dinner. You’re (not) cooking dinner. He is (not) writing an e-mail. He’s (not) writing an e-mail. She is (not) combing her hair. She’s (not) combing her hair.

It is (not) raining again. It’s (not) raining again. We are (not) going on a holiday. We’re (not) going on a holiday. You are (not) studying hard. You’re (not) studying hard. They are (not) having a good time. They’re (not) having a good time.

Question tags

She’s reading the newspaper, isn’t she? We’re going to the pub, aren’t we?

b Als de zin ontkennend is, is de question tag bevestigend. He’s not leaving, is he?

I’m not keeping you, am I?

Let op! Na een zin met ‘I am’ of ‘I’m’, gebruik je ‘aren’t I’ in de question tag. I’m on the wrong bus, aren’t I?
