A Message from the
President
Dear Alumni of Catholic Central, Family, and Friends, One of the things I enjoy most when meeting with alumni, as well as with alumni moms and dads, are the stories I hear about how one particular teacher, priest, coach, or staff member gently guided a student. Perhaps it was a young man who was lost or off track somehow, and a CC mentor coaxed him into success, helping him to recognize the great potential within himself, enough that a humble self-confidence was restored. The successes of alumni are immeasurable, and story after story recalls an individual at Catholic Central who helped a Shamrock gear himself towards success, whether it is spiritual, financial, altruistic, or familial. I often tell current teachers, counselors, coaches, and others here at CC that they have no idea the extent to which they have the capacity to make such a difference in the life of a Man of CC. Time and time again, the Men of CC go out into the world and make positive contributions to God’s children across our state, country, and world. There are very few Basilian priests who can claim that decades of their lives were exclusively offered to Catholic Central. Fr. Ned Donoher, C.S.B. spent most of his over fifty years of priesthood at CC. This month we celebrate the dedication of Fr. Ray Paramo, C.S.B., who celebrated his fiftieth anniversary of priesthood last year, and now celebrates his fifty years of continuous service to Catholic Central. I know his ministry here has been a positive contribution to many of you, and we thank God for his years of service. This coming year, two “institutions” will celebrate ninety years of existence - Detroit Catholic Central High School and Fr. Richard Elmer, C.S.B. ’46. The two are definitely linked, as Fr. Elmer led our dear alumni and friends to offer future generations of CC Shamrocks the beautiful campus we have today. In that spirit, in honor of such legends as Fathers Donoher, Paramo, and Elmer, and as we celebrate nine decades of Basilian Catholic education at CC, we want to focus on our Building and Campus Fund to fulfill what we started in 2005 by paying off the remaining debt for our current campus and facilities. This will allow us to focus on keeping tuition down and our school accessible to more good families. Most likely our current students and their parents tire of hearing me remind them that much of what they enjoy today is the result of the generosity of their CC brothers from previous decades as well as other benefactors. God has blessed us with a tremendous community focused on making sure Catholic Central is as accessible as possible to future generations of fine young men. On behalf of over one thousand young men at CC, thank you! Mary Alma Mater, pray for us! Saint Basil, pray for us!
Fr. John B. Huber, C.S.B., Ed.D. President

WITH THE NEW CC WEBSITE (See Page 7) all will be able to receive the current Aluminator online as well as view earlier issues.
WE WANT EVERYONE THAT WANTS TO RECEIVE A PRINTED ALUMINATOR TO CONTINUE TO DO SO. (BUT WE WANT TO AVOID SENDING COPIES TO ADDRESSES THAT ARE NO LONGER CURRENT. This will avoid much unnecessary waste and expense.) TO HELP US ACCOMPLISH THIS: • If you have an email address, simply log on to the new website. Once you have logged in, if you are not automatically on the Resources page, click on the Resources tab. From there, you will see “How would you like your Aluminator?” • Click that blue box and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the form. • Mark the Aluminator option telling us whether you want to continue receiving the printed Aluminator copy or not. • Make sure the mailing address we have for you is correct. (For example, is the Aluminator being sent to your parents and not you?) If you are receiving your son’s copy and you want him and you to receive a printed copy, give us his current address and tell us you want one too. • IF THERE IS NO ANSWER FROM YOU we will presume that the address we have is not current or that you do not want a printed copy, and we will stop sending you the printed Aluminator.

CC hosts second by Fr. John Huber, C.S.B.
BNENE conference
“BNENE”: The Basilian Network of Education in the New Evangelization. This summer, Detroit Catholic Central hosted the second conference of “BNENE”: the Basilian Network of Education in the New Evangelization. St. John Paul II began calling for a “new evangelization” within the Church, recognizing that many places in the world that were historically Christian, having been converted centuries ago, needed a “new evangelization” to re-invite historically Christian populations to rediscover the Gospel and the Church. In recognizing our limited numbers of Basilian priests in our secondary schools, Superior General Fr. George Smith, C.S.B. founded BNENE to engage both Basilians and lay colleagues from our schools to reaffirm and strengthen the Basilian charisms and Catholic philosophy of education in our institutions. The first gathering was held in Toronto in 2015 and included five Basilian schools: Detroit Catholic Central, St. Michael’s College School (Toronto), Le Collège Privé du Sacré Coeur (Annonay, France), El Instituto de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción (Cali, Colombia), and St. Thomas High School (Houston). Representatives from these schools gathered in a spirit of Catholic collegiality to plan for the future of our schools, in order to guarantee that the Basilian and Catholic characters of our schools continue far into the future. This year’s conference continued in these noble efforts.

In the Fall 2015 issue of the Aluminator, we began the practice of featuring biographies of those who were celebrating the fiftieth anniversary of their graduation from CC. This year five members of the class of 1967 have responded. We hope their example will inspire the class of 1968 to keep things going. – Ed.

We are blessed with two children. Jeffrey is a nurse educator at Sinai-Grace hospital; I used to deliver patient food at Sinai when I was at CC! We are so fortunate that our children and grandchildren live 10 minutes from us in Livonia and that we are together so often. We have a vacation home in Glen Arbor where we spend summers. We are going to continue to develop ways for the dynamic and growing CC family to engage, connect, and be ambassadors for the school. We are even trying to convince the Basilian Fathers to start producing occasional podcasts that can be shared with the CC family. One message I want to share with all alumni is that CC is still the best place you could envision to take a 14 year old boy and turn him into an 18 year old young

Certain things, of course, inevitably have to change – the building is not 60 Belmont Avenue, 14200 Breakfast Drive, or 6565 West Outer Drive; legendary teachers, coaches, and priests retire and get replaced; and students can’t smoke by the bike rack during lunch hour any more. However, many things which helped shape all of us are still part of CC. The school is led by two great priests, Fr. Dennis Noelke, C.S.B. ’71 and Fr. Most importantly, the drumbeat of Goodness, Discipline, and Knowledge is ever present. In the world we live in today, which is harder than ever for a teenager to grow up in, CC and the young men it develops are needed more than ever. You have all been part of creating the historic tradition of this school and paving the path for the students there today. You can have full confidence that the school leaders, educators, and students continue to do things we can all be proud of and are adding to CC’s legacy.

Upcoming Class Reunions Legacy Reunion Mass and Luncheon The annual Catholic Central Legacy Reunion Mass and Luncheon was held at CC on June 21, 2017. This fantastic gathering includes all of the classes that are 50 or more years removed from their CC graduation (1929 -1967). This includes alumni from our first three school buildings on Harper Avenue, Belmont Avenue, and Outer Drive. Over 150 alumni and their guests were in attendance for Mass and lunch. Mass was celebrated in the CC Chapel by CC President Emeritus Fr. Dick Elmer, C.S.B. ’46, who also celebrated his 60th year of ordination to the priesthood. CC President Fr. September 22-24, 2017
The annual Boys’ Bowl – Homecoming Weekend will be Friday, September 22, 2017 through Sunday, September 24, 2017. As always, we invite all alumni and extended members of the CC Family to come home and take part in the many activities and celebrations of the weekend. We all remember our past Boys’ Bowl experiences. Continue the tradition and make Boys’ Bowl Weekend as memorable as it can be. On Friday morning, September 22, the annual Shamrock Shuffle and Boys’ Bowl Assembly will take place at CC. The students pledge money and run in the Shamrock Shuffle to raise funds for the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Michigan. After that, around 9:30 am, the largest spirit assembly in the state will take place in the gym. There our student body will be spirited as we prepare for the upcoming football game against Central Division rival, Brother Rice. Alumni are encouraged to attend. Friday evening and Saturday will consist of “Shamstock” for our students, and golf outings, happy hours, and receptions for many of our alumni celebrating reunions. On Sunday, the annual Gerry Di Ponio ’65 Boys’ Bowl Mass & Breakfast will take place in the gym at 10:00 am. CC President Fr. John Huber, C.S.B. will be celebrating Mass for any members of the CC Family who would like to attend.

George believes that CC gave him the foundation for success, and he always dreamed of helping CC when he was in the financial position to do so. In 1988, he reached out to CC and began working with the school to develop an organized alumni association. In 1990, he helped recruit former CC principal Fr. Richard Elmer, C.S.B. ’46 to return to CC and lead the charge, renovating an office for his use, as well as purchasing equipment and computers. Nearly thirty years later, CC boasts one of the most organized and effective high school alumni associations in America. LEGACY SOCIETY Why Add CC To Your Estate/Legacy Plan? Fr. Huber made the challenge plainly obvious at our recent Legacy Luncheon when he asked who in the crowd had a job to help pay tuition during his days at CC. Nearly every one of us 50+ year alumni raised his hand. Father then stated that our current CC boys also work to help pay their tuition, but all their labors don’t come close to meeting today’s annual tuition cost of nearly $13,000. So, what can we “older” alumni do to help the future students of Catholic Central? We alumni continue to have a great interest and affection for Catholic Central because we desire to preserve CC’s great tradition and mission. While many of us have given much of our time, talents, and/or financial support for current CC operations and activities, only a few have made CC a part of their estate/legacy plan. Gentlemen, I believe CC can count on us, who have such great loyalty, to help assure that any boy who desires to attend CC can do so. We know the costs of maintaining the physical plant, offering competitive teacher salaries, and competing with the public school system will only get tougher. The challenge is to have an Endowment that can assist in the operating plan as well as continuing to keep tuition affordable in order to attract the best and brightest. My request is that you take some time to reflect and ask yourself three questions. First, is Catholic Central the best organization you know to prepare future young men to be contributing members of our Church, country, and society? Second, do you want future young men to have the same opportunity you had to attend this institution? Third, as an involved alumnus, and knowing first-hand what this school means to all of us, do you believe that you have a special obligation to invest in the future of CC? If your answer to these three questions is yes, then as you review your estate plan for 2017 to determine the best way to protect your family and the organizations you hold dear, please include Catholic Central as a part of your estate/legacy plan in whatever amount and manner you deem appropriate. Should you have questions about estate planning or the numerous options to become a member of the St. Basil Legacy Society, contact me in the Advancement Office. Many options offer increased income and/or tax savings opportunities. In closing, as I always tell our alumni and friends of CC, make sure you have an estate plan in place. Remember, we never know when our day will be to rejoin our Lord. If you do not take the proper steps to take care of your family first and then organizations such as CC, when it is time to distribute your estate, the government will be more than happy to set your family and the institutions aside and take your hard earned money. Believe me, it happens every day. God Bless!

Catholic Central Celebrates 90 Years As we begin another school year, CC would like to recognize that this is not just any year. It is the beginning of a year-long celebration of our 90th Anniversary. As we all know, the Basilian Fathers were asked to create a new Catholic high school for boys in Detroit in 1928. From very humble beginnings, who could have ever forecast the history and tradition that would become Detroit Catholic Central High School? Our celebration begins this year with the promotion of this special commemorative logo. It will appear on banners, billboards, and uniforms. News and notice of our anniversary will be shared with local media outlets.
Save the Date - CC 90/90 A very special 90th Anniversary celebration will take place on Saturday, May 12, 2018. We will host a Mass to commemorate our anniversary and to recognize another CC institution that also turns 90 this year. It is no coincidence that our beloved President Emeritus shares his birthday with our school. Yes, both CC and Fr. Richard Elmer, C.S.B. ’46 were born in the same year! So please save the date and plan to join us for a very special celebration that we are calling CC 90/90. All CC Alumni, Family, and Friends are welcome. More details to come!
Ed Turek ’85 Returns! On July 31, 2017, Ed Turek ’85 returned to our Alma Mater to become our new Executive Director of Advancement & Alumni Relations. Ed has joined forces with Fr. John Huber, C.S.B., CC’s President, to lead the Office of Advancement & Alumni Relations and assume responsibility for donor relations, major gift solicitation, and office management. Ed most recently was the President of St. Catherine of Siena Academy in Wixom. Ed previously served CC as our Vice President of Development (2003-2006) and our Director of Admissions (1999-2003). Ed is the proud father of sons Eddie ’13, A.J. ’14, Tommy ’18, and Danny ’21 and daughter Lizzy (St. Catherine of Siena Academy ’20). A devout Shamrock and proud graduate of the University of Michigan, Ed was the winner of the 1985 Fr. James Whalen, C.S.B. Award. His leadership and expertise will be critical to the future success of our school. Welcome back, Ed! 18

Spirit of CC Annual Fund: Goodness, Discipline, and Knowledge
Invest in Mary Alma Mater – Today, Tomorrow, Forever
As we begin another year, it is imperative that we communicate
For all the pride that we feel and profess for CC, you might think
the need for your investment in CC:
that the percentage would be 80-100%. Not even close!
• emotional investment – you are our greatest ambassadors; • spiritual investment – please pray for our students, our faculty, our staff, and our Basilian Fathers; and • financial investment – your investment is critical to the successful execution of our mission. In the year 2017, the truth is that CC is very dependent upon tuition. Too dependent! It is essential for us to fairly and justly compensate our faculty. That compensation is key to attracting the finest teaching faculty and retaining those teachers. The entire cost of tuition supplements faculty salaries and annual operations, but doesn’t cover the entire cost of educating our students. There is a “gap” that exists of nearly $2,000 per student. Many have asked, “Why not just charge the full cost of a CC education?” The leaders of the school have considered doing so, but have always felt an additional $2,000 would adversely affect many families from even considering CC for their sons. Did you know that in a given year only 12-14% of our alumni, family,
Your investment is needed today, tomorrow, and forever. Every gift matters and makes a difference. Our goal this year is to get to 25% participation. What a profound impact that will have on our school! If you are an alumnus, think about the profound impact CC has had on your life. Would you be the person you are today without CC? If you are a parent, think about your son and his CC experience. Would he be who he is and where he is without your gift to him of a CC education? If you are a friend, think about the world we live in and the difference being made in this world by the men of CC. We ask you to consider your investment this year. Perhaps you already give every year – will you renew that commitment? Perhaps you have not given in a few years – will you once again give to CC? Perhaps you have never given – will this be your year to start? To make a gift to CC, please go to: www.catholiccentral.net or call Dan Collins ’84 – Director of Advancement at (248) 596-3834.

AS A FOLLOW UP to the excellent item sent to us for the last issue by Greg Hawthorne ’69, we are including in this issue items from one alumnus, William Tyler Brown ’11, and from one current student, Joe Hardenbergh ’19, as well as a collection of images from the most recent CC Art Show. - Editor
An Alumnus In The Fine Arts A number of CC alumni artists were invited to contribute articles for an Aluminator item on art. Only William Tyler Brown ’11 was able to respond. We liked both his account of his work and his reaction to our request. We’ve included both. His personal account:
IF it weren’t for the art classes I took at CC, I wouldn’t be where I am today. After graduation,
I attended the College for Creative Studies (CCS) in Detroit for four years and graduated in May of 2015 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts; my major was Illustration. I had one internship during my junior year at the mobile game company, Pixogroup, where I helped create 3D models and texture art for various game projects.
William Tyler Brown ’11
His email response: Like a typical artist, I’ve waited till the last minute to get this stuff to you! I’ve attached pictures of my artwork that you can choose from to include. Let me know if there’s anything else you need from me. I’m glad you reached out. This was fun to write and I honestly wish I would have had a similar article to read before I graduated. Best, Tyler
After graduating from CCS, I moved to Los Angeles and took some freelance work with a Chinese mobile game company called ZQ Game, where I was tasked with work similar to that of my internship. I also gained a temporary full-time position as a game tester for Call of Duty at Activision in El Segundo. Though the locale and jobs were nice, they were not ideal. In order to focus on improving my portfolio and finding a better job, I took a part-time position as a framer at Michaels art supply back home in Livonia. One month later, I was extremely lucky to come across an opportunity through my college’s alumni job posting site for a full-time position as production artist at Rolex. I now live in a tiny, overpriced apartment in Brooklyn, New York, and commute to work in Midtown Manhattan, right on 5th Avenue. My advice to the aspiring art students at CC would be this: -Learn to manage your time wisely. It will save you from a lot of stress and sleeplessness. -In the industry, it’s all about WHO you know, WHAT you can do, and HOW fast you can do it. -If you’re serious about pursuing a career in art, you should look for a college that is entirely art focused and nothing else. I highly recommend CCS not only for its convenient location but also for its excellent professors and curriculum.

Fr. Riegel Visits Guam by Fr. William Riegel, C.S.B. In June, I traveled to Guam in order to visit Archbishop Michael Byrnes ’76. It was a wonderful opportunity to learn about the culture and life on the island and to participate in the local church. I was able to celebrate Mass around the island, and I was certainly moved by the depth of the people’s faith. Archbishop Byrnes is already making a positive impact (he arrived last November) although we do miss him on the Catholic Central School Board. He reminded me that in his days at CC, he was captain of the Football Team and was also a member of the Wrestling Team—a good foundation for an Archbishop! I was also able to celebrate Mass at the U.S. Naval base and visit the many World War II sites. I wanted to do this to honor all those CC men who died in the service of their country and those who presently serve in the military.
I mention this because I was again amazed at how extensive the CC family is and how much our graduates have accomplished – even as far as Guam. This has led me once again to appreciate Catholic Central and the Basilians who have so faithfully ministered here since 1928. I delight in gatherings of our alumni who relate stories about their encounters with Basilians in their years here. They may not remember much about their studies, but they certainly can recall the Basilians who taught them! This edition of the Aluminator honors Fr. Ray Paramo, C.S.B., who has been at Catholic Central for all of his ordained life. He and Fr. Dick Elmer, C.S.B. ’46 make up a total of 97 years of service to CC. Today, we have the largest number of active Basilians in any of our schools. We strive to live out our Basilian charism of education and pray that many young men will see in us a meaningful way of life. At present, we are blessed with two Basilian associates from CC, again testimony of the witness of our priests. However, we could not carry on the work here without the support and witness of our very dedicated teachers and staff. Their example contributes to making incarnate the saying: “Jesus Christ is the Reason for Catholic Central.” Our Lady of Guam
As we begin another school year and welcome the Class of 2021, I am reminded of a quote of St. Basil: “It is not he who begins well who is perfect. It is he who ends well who is approved in God’s sight.” As the Freshman class “begins,” may they, and all our students, “end well!” LORD, TEACH US ALL GOODNESS, DISCIPLINE, AND KNOWLEDGE!

BASIL BOWL CONTINUES by Fr. John Huber, C.S.B. SIX BASILIAN SCHOOLS Basilian Secondary education continues to thrive in four different countries: France (Le Collège Privé du Sacré-Coeur, Annonay), Canada (St. Michael’s College School, Toronto), the United States (St. Thomas High School, Houston, Detroit Catholic Central High School and Detroit Cristo Rey High School) and Colombia (El Instituto de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, Cali). Each school has its own culture, history, and traditions, all with a Basilian flavor. Three of those schools have a strong athletic program that goes back to their founding: St. Michael’s (1852), St. Thomas (1900), and Catholic Central (1928). BASIL BOWL For the past few years, these three Basilian high schools have endeavored in a project sponsored by the Basilian Congregation known as “Basil Bowl.” Various sports teams visit one of the three high schools to play a friendly game with their Basilian high school counterparts. Many of the expenses have been covered by generous donors as well as by the Basilian Fathers in Toronto. While St. Michael’s College School has had the privilege of playing St. Thomas in football, soccer, and basketball, Catholic Central has had to limit its “Basil Bowl” games to competitions with St. Michael’s, due to the Michigan Athletic Association’s rules which do not allow CC to play a game against a team from a state or province that does not border Michigan, or is further than 350 miles of the school. Nonetheless, CC teams have played St. Michael’s in lacrosse (Canada’s national summer sport), football, soccer, and hockey. Games have taken place in both Michigan and Toronto. ROBOTICS AND ACADEMIC TEAMS Non-athletic encounters have brought the schools together, as well. The Vex Robotics teams from both Catholic Central and St. Thomas travelled to Toronto to participate in a robotics tournament at St. Mike’s. CC’s outstanding Quiz Bowl scholars travelled to Houston and played their counterparts at St. Thomas.

BASIL OF THE BANDS In addition, CC’s jazz band travelled to Toronto to play tunes at “Club Blue Note,” an annual musical endeavor at St. Mike’s, playing separately as the CC jazz band, but also together with the fine musicians from St. Mike’s. Because this musical endeavor was not a competition, the scholar musicians came up with the title, “Basil of the Bands.” Students from St. Michael’s hosted their counterparts from Michigan, and many became friends and maintain regular contact with their Canadian brothers. While the Shamrock Varsity Football team remains undefeated against St. Mike’s Kerry Blues, the hockey, soccer, and lacrosse teams have gone back and forth in their victories and defeats against their fraternal teams. In each case, however, our scholar athletes from both schools have visited and learned about the culture, history, and traditions of a fellow Basilian high school. Many a CC athlete will be happy to tell you how well he and his parents were treated when visiting St. Michael’s College School. It is our hope that students from Toronto feel the same way about their travels to Novi. THE 40s, 50s, AND THE FUTURE Many CC alumni hold fond memories of trips to Rochester, New York to play my alma mater, Aquinas Institute, in football in the 40s and 50s. My mother shared with me her own scrap book from her high school days (she attended Aquinas’ sister school, Nazareth Academy), which is filled with newspaper articles of the games against the CC Shamrocks, which often drew crowds of over 20,000. When I was appointed principal of CC, some of my relatives in Rochester said to me, “Do you mean THE Catholic Central that Aquinas used to play in those huge football games?” Our Athletic Director Aaron Babicz ’93 will confirm that I have been trying to get an exemption to the Michigan rules so that CC may one day play Aquinas again. While we have been frustrated with the MHSAA rules which have prevented us from playing any of the teams from St. Thomas High School in Houston (where I served as principal before coming to CC), the three schools have a new glimmer of hope. Last year, CC formed a rugby team. Because it is not a sanctioned sport but rather a club, MHSAA rules will not prevent us from playing both St. Mike’s and St. Thomas. Stay tuned!

FR. PARAMO
50 YEARS AT CATHOLIC CENTRAL The reason for this celebration with Fr. Ray Paramo, C.S.B. is not the 50th anniversary of his ordination – that was last December 10. It is not on the occasion of his 80th birthday – that was last January 14. The occasion is the 50th anniversary of his appointment to Catholic Central in September 1967.
He has served this community continuously since then. This is rare for the Basilian Fathers. Usually, over the years of their careers, men are moved to various Basilian institutions, but Fr. Paramo was appointed to serve at Catholic Central for his entire ordained life. Fr. Paramo has served as Physics Teacher and Science Department Head. He has taught Theology for scientifically inclined students and has taught Math and Social Justice. During that time he led many CC students to state and national wins at Science Fair. When he ran the Bookstore it became the first school operation to be computerized. He was Dean of Students and Vice Principal, and for many years he was Missions Director. Above, left to right: Fr. For 12 years, beginning in 2000, he served as Chairman of the CC School Board, CC’s highest governing body. This was the time when the new CC campus in Novi was designed and built. During this time Fr. Paramo wrote and installed the new CC constitution, which, for the first time, allowed lay men and women to serve on the school board. Since 2012, Fr. Paramo has served as Editor-in-Chief of the Aluminator. He has made it a full-color publication with lowered its cost to the school by introducing advertising. Fr. Paramo is especially proud of the Dillon Trophy. When he arrived at CC, he noticed there was no recognition of academic excellence for graduating seniors. The valedictorian was an elected position. He instituted the Dillon Trophy to honor the graduating senior with the highest four-year grade point average. Since then, the valedictory speaker is elected, but the Valedictorian is the winner of the Dillon Trophy. Top: Fr. Sof Fr.tudent memories Paramo from the past fifty years: Rather than a detailed biography, the editors thought it would be more effective to have Fr. Paramo’s students and colleagues express their experiences of his ministry over the past fifty years. Below are some of these expressions.

1976 Mark Majkowski Business Consultant I want to say that you were always prepared and aware. The fact that you looked for the right and to give proper credit was both eye opening and what I now do myself. I’ve really never seen students who didn’t want to build on what they already knew or ones who could entertain topics lacking a reasonable competency predicate. Things seem impossible sometimes as students, but you are limited as a teacher in what you can ask that will test competency. Of all items, I thought the most important thing you taught was not physics at all, but that your brain was less operative while watching TV than when sleeping. What impressed me is that you had the materials you wanted to cover, a way to convey them, and a way to evaluate mastery. Also, and most importantly, you prepared what you planned to do and how to do it. And you never “hid” the answer. You gave us the tools to understand the problem and showed us how to apply them. You also used multiple cues which you may not have realized helped even those with undiagnosed learning differences that no one was aware of, understand. You wrote, pointed, talked, and repeated. Anything that was important was mentioned several times in different ways. And you were a little more interesting, as you almost never stood still, just watching you move made one more active in listening and comprehending. A man 40 years ahead of his time.

Fr. Ray Paramo, like many of his teaching colleagues at Catholic Central, was a gifted classroom teacher. He taught both physics and theology at CC with great dedication to his students. I remember taking an honors physics course at the University of Michigan where much of the content taught in a semester was a review of what I had learned from Fr. Paramo at Catholic Central. My wife and I have been blessed to hear Fr. Ray preach at Mass on a few occasions over the years and can testify that his teaching ability remains strong. It is always a great joy to encounter Fr. Ray at social events, and I congratulate him on his fifty years of service to the CC family.

I vividly remember taking Fr. Paramo’s theology class as a senior. The class was called “Man’s Search for Meaning Through Science” but the computer abbreviation for the class in the syllabus was simply “Mng Sci.” Perhaps in part because of the unusual name and also in part because it was being taught by the physics teacher, the class had a bit of a mysterious reputation. Despite my concern that it might not be an easy “A” like most theology classes, my curiosity won and I took the class. I can remember like it was yesterday on the first day of the class when Fr. Ray said that during this class he will prove that God does exist (it is not a matter of belief), and he will do so without having to settle the debate between Darwin’s theory of evolution and the book of Genesis. Well, he certainly got this seventeen year-old’s undivided attention! He went on over the next few months to explore so many ideas of science, evolution, and the cosmos while underscoring the divine and miraculous origin of matter, life, and, most of all, man’s conscious ability to know and understand its beauty. Over the years I have been asked, what was the best class you ever took? There is no doubt that no class in grammar or high school, college or law school had a greater impact on my life than Fr. Ray’s Mng Sci class. Every time I look at anything in nature or the sky I feel a deeper sense of connection to it all because of Ray Paramo. His brilliant understanding of science and nature is only outshone by his deeper understanding of God’s love and infinite grace. I feel very blessed to have been his student in such an important subject matter, and even more fortunate to call him my friend (and always teacher) now.

Medical Software Engineer On the occasion of your fiftieth year as a priest, I would like to thank you for the contributions that you have made to me and to others. Thank you for the inspiration that you have provided to me and to others over the years. Thank you for providing the sacraments, both at Catholic Central and in local parishes. Thank you for your work as a theology teacher. While I was not able to personally attend your theology classes, I have learned a lot by speaking with you. Thank you for your work as a physics teacher. I am now working on an application of high energy physics, a superconducting synchrocyclotron that is used to treat cancer. The laws of physics that you taught me still apply. As an engineer, I am sometimes required to keep a lab notebook, and I think of my first lab notebook, the one in your physics class, when I do this. Thank you for your work as an administrator. Thanks to your efforts, Catholic Central continues to thrive. Thank you for encouraging me to study and play the violin. I am still playing violin, and I have also learned to play the viola. I have studied piano, and I am now learning to play the organ. I played violin and viola in many local orchestras, at many weddings, and at many Masses. Thank you for rescuing me from the Catholic Central band leader, William B. Watts ’40, who said that if I wanted to play a violin solo at Catholic Central that I should be carrying a flag on the football field with the marching band. Thank you for introducing me to Richard Wagner. As you may recall, I attended the entire Wagner Ring cycle in Seattle with you. Wagner’s music has made a great impression on me. Thank you for inviting me to attend some Detroit Symphony concerts with you when I was a high school student. I think that it is very important to be exposed to different forms of classical music, as I believe that our musical tastes are largely formed during the high school years. Thank you for your friendship over the years.
Fr. Paramo came to CC the year after our father died. He was and is a great gift to our (Kevin ’69 and Patrick ’71) lives.
We are beneficiaries of his passion for teaching, for trying to get us to “think in a straight line.” In the tumultuous times of the ‘60s, he listened to our pronouncements, however goofy or poorly thought out. Fr. Ray gave us the respect of a thoughtful reply, demanded that we reply in kind, and defended our right to think and act as individuals. Throughout our lives, he has included us in his intellectual, artistic, and religious curiosity. More importantly, he became a friend, not only to us, but also to our family. He came to weddings and blessed our homes. He engaged, challenged, and occasionally lost arguments with Mary, our mom. He entranced her Southern Baptist sister Milbrey with his wisdom, but mostly with their shared love of music. He has championed and supported Milbrey’s son Randy, a classically trained pianist who manages group homes for the handicapped. When our sister Ellen committed suicide, Fr. Paramo celebrated a private Mass for our family at the Basilian residence. We felt he was extending the friendship of the Church to us through himself. Our family, and a lot of others, has many reasons to be grateful for Fr. Paramo’s vocation, which he has described as “seeing Christ in other people.”

Today, I still feel at least a little bit confident that I didn’t just take Fr. Paramo’s physics class, but that he taught me to study physics. I offer three examples as evidence. I was at Tiger Stadium with a friend once, watching some pre-game hijinks among players trying to hit the highest pop-up. The friend wondered how high they were hitting the ball. I said we didn’t have to wonder. He pulled out his fancy timepiece, with a stopwatch function, and I pulled out the relevant kinematics equation from my head (d = v1t + ½ at2) and we calculated the height on the spot. A few years back I was plying my craft as a surface scientist in rented space at Madonna University. My room was across the hall from the physics lab and I often spent time talking to the physics students. At the end of the semester, they were reviewing a practice test in preparation for the final. Typical students, in near-panic mode, they asked me, an aging chemist, for help. With no preparation and not having cracked a physics text for decades, I was able to answer most of the questions. I would have passed the exam easily, quite possibly with an A! When Fr. Paramo taught optics, he always showed us his air lens to make the point of the importance of refractive index differences. I have that air lens now and have used it on three separate occasions – including a class lecture at Madonna and in a paper presented at a national chemistry conference. That demonstration NEVER fails to draw positive comment from the crowd afterward.

The point is that when Fr. Paramo taught something, it stayed taught. I no longer know the final body count in Romeo and Juliet, I don’t remember the 11th amendment to the US Constitution and, sadly, I would have to look up the integral for the sin x function. But, if you asked me to predict the size and location of an image produced by a convex lens, I could do it. Thanks, Fr. Paramo!

Not long ago, I had lunch with Fr. Ray Paramo, Fr. Dick Elmer, C.S.B. ’46, as well as my classmate, Dr. Greg Mahr ’75, at the Selden Standard Restaurant near Wayne State University. Greg is a prominent psychiatrist at Henry Ford Hospital. When I called Fr. Paramo to set up the luncheon and let him know that Greg was going to be able to join us, he was very excited because he was going to be able to discuss the most recent developments in psychiatry, psychology, and philosophy with Greg. Lunch revolved around a discussion between Fr. Paramo and Greg about the writings of the French philosopher, Pierre Teilhard de Chardin. I am not sure if Fr. Elmer was paying close attention to the discussion or not. After a while, my mind wandered to the physics class I had with Fr. Paramo during my senior year at Catholic Central. As a student, I had little interest in science, and, more specifically, less interest in physics. I thought about my lab partner, Doug Cousino ’75, and some of his zany antics during our physics labs. I must say that Fr. Paramo had a rare gift in that he could make a subject interesting for a student who had little interest, and less aptitude, in the subject. I actually enjoyed the physics course I had with Fr. Paramo! I came to learn how Fr. Paramo is a renaissance man (as is Dr. Mahr). I always thought of Fr. Paramo as a science teacher. Later, I learned that he was an excellent instructor in theology, psychology, and sociology. Fr. Paramo was one of the finest teachers I have had at any educational level, including high school, college, and law school.

The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe - we enter another world through the wardrobe. Alice in Wonderland introduces a new reality when we fall down a rabbit hole. Harry Potter travels to Hogwarts by train. New worlds, new realities, new understandings. New knowledge. Fifty years of traveling to new worlds, thanks to the presence of Raymond Paramo in our lives. Through the portals of science, religion, philosophy, music, theater, visual arts, literature, poetry, and more. Guide, partner, fellow-traveler. Mentor. Friend. Teacher. Thank you, Ray!
I was fortunate enough to meet Fr. Ray Paramo in the fall of 1967, my sophomore year at DCC. Fr. Ray asked me to assist him in the bookstore and I accepted his offer. That started the relationship and friendship that is approaching 50 years. This enabled me to experience a life-long exposure to the culture, the mystery, and the humor of Fr. Ray. My early impression of Fr. Ray was of amazement due to his office just off of the Physics Lab at 6565 West Outer Drive. He had this great stereo system and a large collection of records that spanned many musical styles and he liked to play them loud. Besides working for him for my entire time at CC, he also was my Physics teacher and my senior year Religion teacher. That Religion class was a unique blend of science and God, a great class. With Fr. Ray, I attended my first opera (Michigan Opera Theatre) and my first Detroit Symphony Orchestra concert. For me, the mystery of the man revolves around his travels. Fr. Ray loves to travel and I have been fortunate to accompany him on a few of his trips. His stories are always a great listen. He knows someone in almost every place that you can mention. Some have even questioned if he is a CIA agent. Fr. Ray liked to emphasize the knowledge and goodness part of the CC Motto and this is reflected in his successful efforts to establish the Fr. Daniel Dillon Award in 1970, which is given each year to the graduate with the highest grade-point average, and the Academic Showcase Wall at CC in 2009. The Congregation of St. Basil was blessed when Ray Paramo was ordained in 1966, but the CC Family is the true winner for having Fr. Ray Paramo at CC since the fall of 1967. May Our Lord continue to bless Fr. Ray and allow him to continue his enjoyment of all parts of this planet.

Although I never had the experience of being one of Fr. Paramo’s students, I certainly know of his reputation as one of CC’s great educators.
My experience with Fr. Paramo came long after my days as a student, when I had the privilege to serve on the school’s Board of Directors. The Board at that time was newly-minted, in that for the first time lay directors would serve on what had previously been an all-Basilian Board. It is probably fair to say that it was, in a good way, a challenging time for all. It was a new experience for everyone – new people and a new and more formal form of governance. Fortunately for everyone, Fr. Paramo was the Chairman of that Board. He thoughtfully and insightfully guided us not only through the issues of the day but also through the more subtle issues emanating from new facts, new ideas, and the changed approach to governance. He skillfully guided our discourse and was able to reconcile and harmonize different points of view. It was an immensely rewarding experience, in no small part in consequence of Fr. Paramo’s leadership. He was an example for all of us. 32
Ray Paramo inspired me, an awkward kid from a big family with limited exposure to the world - one who worked weekends at Olga’s Kitchen to afford the CC tuition. His enthusiasm for science introduced me to opportunities I had never imagined, created in me a passion for tinkering and thinking, and launched me on a trajectory of lifetime learning. During the first day of Physics in the 11th grade, this great teacher appeared to stop a rotating fan with a strobe light. I was hooked! I continued as an undergraduate and graduate student in mechanical engineering with a focus on robotics. I have enjoyed a long career in the semiconductor industry, gaining management experience and international awareness. I started a couple of companies, including one that makes large batteries for the smart grid. Our battery systems are shipping to multiple countries and will help make the world cleaner and brighter. A teacher like Ray Paramo is a gem. He sheds light not just on students for the year or two he has them in his classroom but in the years to follow. Father Paramo’s love of science and innovation is a spark which has ignited generations of CC students to make a difference.

Left to right: Co-Head Coach Ben Herman ’98, Robert Mansuetti ’17, Will LaMarra ’17, Austin Morton ’17, Robert Crawford ’18, Assistant Coach Anthony Cornish, and Co-Head Coach Christopher Gismondi ’00
The Catholic Central Academic Team, led by co-head coaches Ben Herman ’98 and Christopher Gismondi ’00, won the PACE National Championship in Chicago in June. This marks the program’s fourth national championship overall and second PACE championship, including 2015. CC finished the tournament undefeated and won the championship without requiring a final round. The A Team set a new school record for average points per game at PACE with 530.60, besting the 2015 national championship team’s previous record of 525.30. Furthermore, the B Team finished with a 26th place finish at PACE. The Shamrocks finished 2nd at the NAQT High School National Championship Tournament in Atlanta in May. Both the Shamrock B and C Teams finished 41st. With a 1st place at PACE and a 2nd place at NAQT, the A Team’s combined finish of 3 is a new school record, besting 2015’s and 2001’s previous record of 4. Congratulations to Ben Herman and Christopher Gismondi on being named National High School Quiz Bowl Coaches of the Year!

Mr. Howard Weinberg, the founding coach of the CC Academic Team, was moved to write to the editor about the recent victories: Father, My congratulations to the coaches of the academic team on winning the PACE national tournament for the second time. Two weeks ago they came within one question of also winning the NAQT national tournament. Winning both national tournaments in the same year remains an elusive objective. However, they could not have come closer. A tremendous season. I see the last of the Crawfords was a starter on this team and, as a junior, figures to be the captain next year. In 2001 he was an infant being carried by his mother when the team captained by his brother won the state and NAQT tournaments. We wanted to fly over to see one of the national tournaments, but they conflicted with our trips to see the Indy car races at Indianapolis and Fort Worth. All is well in Nevada.

Mock Trial by Erik Nilsen
Mock trial is a program run by the Michigan Center for Civic Education. Every year, a case is released in early November, and teams of six to ten students work for months to prepare to present their case against another school’s team. Countless hours of preparation culminate in a single-day regional tournament held in late February or early March to determine who will move on to the State tournament held in Lansing in late March. Four months of preparation for one day of glory. Detroit Catholic Central’s Mock Trial team formed in 2011. We have slowly risen from a team that didn’t have enough members to compete in their inaugural season of 2011 to back-to-back State Tournament qualifiers in 2016 and 2017. The 2017 team took eventual State Champion Kalamazoo down to the wire before being eliminated, and we know our ascent will only continue from here. Our success is due to the hard working young men at CC as well as the contributions of our parents and alumni, including Hon. Lita Popke, Hon. Annette Berry, Patrick Foley ’03, John Foley ’73, and many others. We look forward to seeing all that the future has in store for this great team!
