Transcending Luxury 11

Where were you born and where did you grow up? I was born in Hong Kong and raised between Australia and England. Can you describe your relevant training and work experience? I attended Blake College, London, and The French Design School, Surrey, UK. I have held positions with prestigious design firms like Colefax and Fowler Mayfair London, JBL Design, Sanderson & Sons Ltd, Innovation, and Chelsea Textiles Design as the Artistic Director. My portfolio includes projects in the United States, Europe, and Asia. What has been the highlight of your career so far? Starting my own business and winning an Award in 2022 at The International Design & Architecture Awards hosted by design et al in London. How did achieving this make you feel? With my education and experience, I finally achieved my global career aspirations. Winning the Design et al Award was a significant accomplishment for me.

What is the project you are most proud of to date, and why was it a success? I am most proud of the Sunnyside project in Palm Beach. It is an English Georgian style home in Florida, but we approached it with a classic contemporary twist, paying homage to Palm Beach. The fusion of these elements made it a successful project, and it was even featured on a US television show. How would you describe your design style and ethos? Our design ethos varies depending on the style on which we are working. Scale, proportion, and understated refinement are always crucial. For period interiors, we take a “Quiet Evolution” approach. The project’s location also plays a significant role in determining the interior design style. How has the pandemic changed your perspective on work-life balance? The pandemic has allowed us to work remotely, leading to increased focus within our team.

Where do you find inspiration for your work? I am constantly inspired by architectural details, period artwork, nature, and the surroundings of each project.

How do you foresee the pandemic changing the global design sector? I believe the design sector will undergo a transformation similar to the financial crisis of 2008, and we may see a resurgence akin to the Roaring Twenties.

How do you relax and maintain work-life balance? I enjoy spending time with friends and my sister. I also love art, antique fairs, exhibits, museums, and traveling.

What are your thoughts on the future of design? I anticipate a growing gap between upper-market and highstreet stores, with the middle market diminishing.

Has your approach to relaxation changed in recent years? Yes, recently, I have been entertaining more at home and appreciating the local nature, as I have been working more from my home studio.

What are your aims for the next twelve months and beyond? My goal for the next twelve months and beyond is to focus on the new bespoke turnkey program we have developed for multiple residence clients.

What projects are you currently working on? We are currently working on residential projects in the Hamptons, Palm Beach, outer West London, Tangier, and a commercial project in NYC.

In which direction is your design work evolving? We are moving toward offering turnkey bespoke design packages.

Can you provide more details about these projects? Sure, the Sagaponack project is an 18th Century Country House. Palm Beach project features a classic Palm Beach style. The outer West London project combines contemporary design with a transitional twist. The Tangier project will have a European style with Moroccan motifs and designs. What area of the design sector do you primarily work in? I specialise in super high-end residences and what we refer to as light commercial projects.

12 Brian Worthington & Associates

How is your work evolving, and what contributes to your success? We are fortunate to have clients who trust us completely, allowing us to make critical design decisions. This results in a seamless handover to the client, with no unexpected surprises, and our clients are thrilled with the end results. Do you have any final thoughts to share? We are eagerly looking forward to handing over the successful projects we are currently working on.

Transcending Luxury 15

Where were you born/ where did you grow up? I was born and raised in Setúbal, Portugal. Can you describe your relevant training and work experience? I have a degree in Interior Design from Fundação Espírito Santo e Silva – E.S.A.D. in Lisbon, as well as a BA in furniture design from the same institution. From a tender age, I showed the ability to be a team leader and a project manager, with a special ability to develop personal bonds. My biggest skill is to generate emotions that create trends. In 1998, I started working in the interior design field, and from the year 2000, I worked as a team leader and project manager of various design studios. It was at that phase of my career path that I consolidated the passion that I already had for the field, dealing with every stage of a project as a whole. Sónia Rodrigues completed a decorative painting course at Fundação Espírito Santo e Silva – I.A.O. She also attended the Interior Design course at Fundação Ricardo Espírito Santo e Silva- E.S.A.D., in Lisbon. Sónia has a special ability for the different details of every creation because it is in them that lie the identity and differentiation of each project. Since the year 2000, she manages and develops decorative painting projects, interior design projects, event management, and shop window design projects with various studios. The career paths of Sónia Rodrigues and me, which had already crossed paths various times, ended up coming together at last in 2008, with the biggest challenge of all: the foundation of Às Duas por Três. The spirit that was in the basis of the dream of opening our own business is the same spirit that we carry until today, with each project that we embrace. Each client has its own dream, and each project is that dream under construction. Functionality, aesthetics, and comfort, so that each space becomes unique, are the key values that follow the development of every concept and environment, so that the final result has a unique and timeless character. Where do you find inspiration for your work? Our inspiration is daily and it comes from everything our senses capture. Here, is where the client and its dreams take a main role, since it’s for the client that we create. In that regard, all details are important in the creative process. From nature and its organic shapes, movements, new materials, everything reflects in an imagination with no limits. We are always aware of everything that is going on in the world, from fashion, photography, architecture, to design. In a world in constant change, we have our focus in the constant change of human needs and demands, since they reflect in the conception of spaces. For a creative mind, inspiration is the reflection of a healthy mind, therefore a sunset, its wonderful colours or the simple movement or a tree, can be the start of an idea. How do you relax and find your work/ life balance? Throughout my professional path, I have always lived everything that involves design in a very intense way. To relax, we enjoy

16 Às Duas por Três

smells, colours, feeling the wind in our faces and the ocean in our feet. All of that is freedom of movement to feel and absorb the natural elements that the world has to offer. Has this changed in recent years? I have always balanced my personal life with my professional life the same way. What project(s) are you currently working on? At the moment we are developing a nightclub with an outdoor lounge and restaurant, in a small city located by the river. Please describe the project you are most proud of to date, with reasons why this was a success? Nicola Rossio Hotel, for its historical load and the location, in one of the most important and emblematic plazas in Lisbon, sharing walls with Nicola Café, one of the most visited spaces by tourists. Since it is a building that follows a Pombaline style, a Portuguese architectural style, it had many challenges to take in consideration and to overcome. The entire concept was thought about and developed by our studio, from the colours, textures, materials, signage as well as the conception and design of all furniture. Almost everything was custom designed, since all rooms in the hotel had different dimensions and layouts, so we had to adapt each to the developed concept. The biggest challenge for this project was the fact that it was all developed during the Covid-19 pandemic, what also made it even more special: a hotel filled with history, thought and conceived in a very unique moment for humanity. For that, it will forever stay in our memory. What are your thoughts on the future of design? The future of Design is facing new challenges, in a global era in constant and fast change. The future goes through an authentic design, committed to environmental, social and economic sustainability, developing new products/spaces, simple and intuitive, adapted to the new lifestyle and consumer demands. We think the Redesign movement is still the future, in combination with eco-design, reinventing and focusing on new ways of thinking and a contribution to a more sustainable world. Which direction are you moving in from a design perspective? We create and design with creativity thinking about the client, developing unique, emblematic and seductive spaces, enhancing comfort and well-being, combining aesthetics and design. We are always in a constant search for a unique identity, with a soul, which creates trends instead of following them. How is your work evolving? We embrace new challenges and concepts daily with the same enthusiasm and passion as always. Constantly aware of the constant evolution of materials and new ways of living, trying to develop every project in a conscious and sustainable way, fulfilling every goal, working for the final result to create emotions.

“Double height rooms overlooking Hyde Park ensured the views are sublime year round and the design team worked to bring this natural beauty into the interior designs as well ensuring a beautiful flow inside and out. It was key that the interior spoke to the surrounding city landscape, embracing futuristic and luxurious finishes such as bronze, marble and pearlised resins, the strength of these finishes has been balanced with softer, tactile, more organic shapes reflecting the park beyond”

Based in London’s prestigious ‘The Lancasters’ building, overlooking Hyde Park, this French Renaissance style Grade II listed façade is an attractive front to the bright and contemporary living spaces inside. An exquisitely beautiful white-stucco fronted terrace, is the grand setting for Katharine Pooleys latest extraordinary design project. Extensive building works, and a total redesign, resulted in two properties being seamlessly merged into one incredible, art-filled residence. Taking two existing dwellings totalling 8,000 sqft of space, Katharine and her luxury interior design studio have renovated the property using sympathetic architectural detailing, thoughtful use of finishes and careful space planning to create this sophisticated residential home, with elegant reception rooms suitable for entertaining along with cosy lounge areas for quality family time. Inspired by the stunning views from the front of the property, a tranquil, natural theme radiates throughout the project. Katharine’s variety of different glass techniques chosen for the main pendants keep the feeling of space within the double height rooms, allowing the light to reflect and bounce off the surrounding surfaces to maximise their presence. Paying homage to the style and history of the listed building’s interior design, Katharine and her team’s final design is befitting of this fine, historic residence. It was important to the client that the final design be warm in tone and contain detailing that showcased the best of British craftsmanship and contemporary design. Katharine worked tirelessly to ensure the beauty of the traditional

marble fireplaces, plaster columns and intricate cornicing of this fine building, were balanced gracefully with new contemporary details. She found much inspiration in the breath-taking, and unsurpassed, views this home enjoys, and commissioned handpainted silk wallpaper with tree motifs, leaf shaped chandeliers and bespoke foliage themed ironmongery to ensure that the timeless beauty of Hyde Park was as much evident within the property as outside of it. “Striking bespoke furniture pieces, sculptural lighting and arresting artworks were created, commissioned and curated from my favourite artists, artisans and workshops to lovingly piece together an interior like no other”, Katharine explained. “I commission a great deal of bespoke furniture, lighting and specialist handapplied finishes – like the hand-painted magnolia tree in the double height dining room – because these artisan skills, are so incredibly rare, unusual and beautiful. My clients value artistry and craftsmanship and understand that these precious skills are at the heart of true luxury”. Favourite aspects of the project for Katharine Pooley are stand-out pieces include paintings by Ilhwa Kim and Brendan Burns, and a large, gracefully curving, crystal-rod chandelier to the formal living room. “Mesmerizingly beautiful in its fragile twisting form, this chandelier perhaps best encapsulates my overall vision for this incredible property: Elegant, luxurious and totally unique,” Katharine commented. The soft colour palate and layers of lighting ensure that a grand space remains intimate, inviting and comfortable. The client loves to entertain with their young family so Katharine

wanted to create a space that was first and foremost a home, but one that also created a real ‘wow’ impression for when they have guests. Double height rooms overlooking Hyde Park ensured the views are sublime year round and the design team worked to bring this natural beauty into the interior designs as well ensuring a beautiful flow inside and out. It was key that the interior spoke to the surrounding city landscape, embracing futuristic and luxurious finishes such as bronze, marble and pearlised resins, the strength of these finishes has been balanced with softer, tactile, more organic shapes reflecting the park beyond. Leaf shapes are a common narrative throughout, appearing in cabinet hardware, hand painted silk wallpapers and crystal chandeliers alike. Katharine remarked “for a design to exist peacefully it must co-exist harmoniously with its surrounding environment so these details were really important to get right”. Katharine Pooley has been shortlisted for the Luxury Residence – London Award in The International Design and Architecture Awards 2022. Speaking about the Awards Katharine said “the awards are such a wonderful window into the absolute finest interior and architectural designs being created right now, worldwide. I am always so excited to take part as I know the quality of work showcased is unparalleled and inspiring”. Katharine was named British Designer of the Decade at the International Design and Architecture Awards in 2019. A world leader in high end, luxury, residential interior design, Katharine Pooley creates exceptional private homes unmatched in scale, originality and quality and The Lancasters project is a fine example.

Transcending Luxury 31

Where were you born/ where did you grow up? I was born in Dorset in the UK. An amazing and beautiful part of England with rolling chalk downs and a dramatic Jurassic coastline. A vibrant yet calming melting pot to nurture my early years. I grew up surrounded by nature and wild flora and fauna, from bluebell woods to hilltop fortresses. Lots of colours, textures, and variety to really excite the senses to inspire and feel at one with my surroundings. Please describe the highlight of your career to date. Deciding to set up my own Interior Design consultancy which has been hard work yet very fulfilling as this has led me to express my thoughts and ideas, work with an incredible team that I have in my studio and also some incredible visionaries who we have collaborated with on some fabulous projects together. Not to mention winning Hospitality Designer of the Decade at the Design Et Al Awards in 2021 amongst many other accolades. How did achieving this make you feel? It made me feel so proud and humbled to have created interiors that people can enjoy and weave that into the fabric of life to bring about lasting memories. Creating physical environments brings a real sense of achievement and reward to one’s own life too. Where do you find inspiration for your work? Through my travels to where my projects are. We work internationally, and so it is important to see other cultures and experience this firsthand through eating locally and being enveloped in the way they are themselves are inspired. I am a very visual person and therefore love the arts, fashion, and decorative objet from a bygone era or something that is fresh and new. Has this changed in recent years? It is not so much as changed the way I get the balance, but the enjoyment of both working and playing that gives me the balance I need. That may be work-related playing such as visiting suppliers or traveling, but not always a 50/50 as the pendulum could swing in favour of ensuring I feel contentment in my life. What project(s) are you currently working on? We are working across the globe on various exciting luxury Hotel & Restaurant projects from London and New York, Hamburg, and the Middle East. New ventures for new and repeat clients wanting to keep exciting the World’s travellers and diners, rested and fed. This is food for my mind as this is what we do best. Tell us a little more about these project(s)... For all of these projects, it is important to strike the right note between the brand values of the client blended with the local cultures and craftsmanship to give an ambiance and patina that belongs and yet expresses what we are setting out to achieve.

32 Robert Angell Design International

It never ceases to amaze me how we are all moving forwards developing new ideas and referencing the past with so much vigour that we need sometimes to have places we create as punctuations in our busy lives to breathe and stop before we continue on the path we choose. Whether that is a resort hotel on the Gulf of Oman or Sky Bar in Hamburg, it is a place to relax and just enjoy life. What area(s) of the design sector do you work in for the most part? We mainly work in Hospitality but occasionally turn our hand to Residential and Retail. Either way, we aim to produce unique designs in a bespoke way using craftspeople and a team that realises what we set out to achieve. I love the creation of hotels that we design for luxury brands for guests to enjoy, but also independent restaurateurs that want to showcase their way of cooking and we find the best way to express that within our interiors. What are your thoughts on the future of design? Its as important today as it always has been. New technological advances in AI will also help us explore new approaches that some will embrace and others will hark back to the past again. Design is around all of us more than ever and this will push the boundaries for some very exciting times ahead through our expression to realise these dreams that shape our lives. Please tell us about your aims for the next twelve months and beyond. To complete some of the amazing projects we have had on the drawing board and actually be in them, experience them and enjoy them. Set about creating more wonderful interiors for equally amazing clients. Hopefully visit some new and exciting countries and set about finishing my own home refurbishment too. Which direction are you moving in from a design perspective? I think we are moving towards a more textural and experiential design language. That could be either in a simpler pared back way or a more layered approach, depending on the briefs we get or help to create. I love meeting and developing new material finishes with our suppliers to find that perfect weave of fabric to a metal patina for a lamp. So more experimental development of materials and processes to build on that on design footing. Final thoughts? What I find amazing is that we as designers are providing a rich history in what we are all creating and developing for today’s traveller’s, diners, consumers, and residents that is being constantly interwoven through the fabric of society to inspire future generations that follow us. Hopefully creating a better World and continuing to strive for peace and harmony for everyone.

Where were you born/ where did you grow up? I was born in Saudi Arabia and grew up in Virginia, U.S for the first years of my childhood.

How would you describe your work/design style/ ethos? It’s more towards the Luxury Contemporary Classic yet comfortable interiors.

Please explain your relevant training/ work experience? I’ve gained most of my experience through self-learning and from working on small projects during the early years of my business and definitely still learning everyday with each and every project we take on. It’s a never-ending learning process.

How has the pandemic changed your outlook on work/ life? It has changed a lot, both professionally and personally. In only a few months, the pandemic stopped the movement of everything around the world; jobs, economies, businesses, travels, and most importantly, social interactions.

Please describe the highlight of your career to date. There are lots of highlights throughout a designer’s journey, but probably the one that gives me goosebumps every time I recall is when I finally opened my own office. How did achieving this make you feel? It has become more real and official. A huge step to my dream becoming a reality. As I’ve always believed in the saying “It’s the possibility of having a dream come true that makes life interesting”. Where do you find inspiration for your work? Since I was a little girl, I’ve always seen everything around me from an artistic perspective. Thus, I actually find inspiration in my everyday life, whether during a simple walk in a park or a shopping mall or during my travels, or even while watching movies or TV shows, and also of course just like other designers, I find endless inspiration on the most common social media channels; like Instagram and Pinterest. What projects are you currently working on? Currently working on several luxury residential projects including a beautiful Farm Villa. We have been working on a couple of renovation projects which we have found very interesting, though most difficult, as the outcome always amazes our clients and ourselves. Please describe the project you are most proud of to date, with reasons why this was a success? I actually fall in love with each new project we take on, it’s a never-ending love story for me. I always tell my team this is my favourite project, then we complete a newer one and that one becomes my favourite and so on.

36 Buthaina Humaidy Interiors

As for our business, it was a hidden opportunity to start something new-since our ordinary work process of site visits and projects supervisions was obstructed and delayed, we had to find something to keep our business not only going but flourishing. Early on in the pandemic, we started our online consultation sessions which have gained a lot of attention not only locally but also across the region. How do you feel the pandemic has changed the global design sector? People having had to stay in their homes during lockdown made them realise the importance of making the spaces they live in more aesthetically pleasing in addition to functionality and comfort. What are your thoughts on the future of design? I believe it will keep on growing as it is a continuously evolving field that never ends. I quote this saying by Robert L. Peters “Design creates culture, Culture shapes values, Values determine the Future”. Please tell us your aims for the next twelve months and beyond? Personally, I have always aimed to make a positive change wherever I go, whether with projects we work on or through the posts we share. Thus, I aim to have our office be one of the most inspirational Interior Design Studios in the region and globally. We are always expanding our team to accommodate the high demand for our services. Which direction are you moving in from a design perspective? I love designing residential projects and will keep on focusing on that but we are also focusing to grow more on the commercial sector.

“The Kings Library Penthouse building has very unusually proportioned rooms. This meant that everything Joanna Wood International Interior Design did was on a larger scale than normal. Rather than trying to create something more traditional, the designers chose to plan a very modern home around its existing architecture. This created a contrast between the old and the new, which is something the design team continued to create throughout the apartment.”

The Kings Library Penthouse is a fivebedroom, 6,000 square foot penthouse on the top floor of a former Edwardian Girl’s school, in Chelsea, London. Joanna Wood International Interior Design were given a brief to transform the space into a contemporary home with five bedrooms and plenty of space for entertaining. The penthouse was created out of the fourth storey of this purpose-built school. The building was designed in 1908 by Thomas J Bailey. Joanna Wood International Interior Design is one of the most sought-after interior design companies in the world, with a team based in Belgravia, London. The unmatched professionalism and style of Joanna and her team has attracted some of the highest profile and most prestigious residential, private and commercial projects around the globe. This client wanted a homely living space with ample areas for guests, along with modern amenities and rooms that serve several purposes. Joanna Wood and her design team focused on creating comfortable seating in the living areas on this project. They created an entertainment and living space with a mix of high and low ceilings, along with a seating area which was divided by a large, curved sofa. They also concentrated on creating a snug with a fireplace wall, a separate cinema room and a dining area to one side. The penthouse is immediately impressive due to its size and volume of the double height entrance hall. The designers transformed this voluminous space with a Tracey Emin neon artwork titled ‘If music be the food of love’. Along with a fluttering 46 Joanna Wood

gold mobile artwork by Christel Sadde over the stairs. Its stunning contemporary spiral staircase, grand piano and art collection makes a striking impact as you walk into a truly unique space. Joanna Wood International Interior Design used a mixture of colour schemes, statement art and bespoke furniture which created the perfect balance between family and formality. Vast spaces had to be carefully re-imagined and arranged around some of the original architectural features, including a glazed brick stairwell and a double height entrance hall. The original stairwell has been completely transformed by the designers. The space is now an elegant split-level bathroom with a copper bathtub. Designing the apartment in the Sloane building was a real challenge to create homely living spaces out of the extraordinary vast spaces of an Edwardian school. The sheer size of the space is what made Joanna Wood’s client’s brief the biggest challenge. The building’s original guise is still evident in its huge chapel windows and 27ft high former assembly hall. However, the warmth injected by carefully thought-out interior design has created a unique London penthouse apartment. When discussing any other challenges faced with this project, Joanna Wood recalled a tense time and explained “The moment where I held my breath when the specialist hung both the Tracey Emin neon quotation and the beautiful Christel Sadde gold mobile. The grand piano came in by crane. Once they were in situ, I could relax.” The designers have shown dedication to this transformation which has provided a phenomenal result.

The Kings Library Penthouse building has very unusually proportioned rooms. This meant that everything Joanna Wood International Interior Design did was on a larger scale than normal. Rather than trying to create something more traditional, the designers chose to plan a very modern home around its existing architecture. This created a contrast between the old and the new, which is something the design team continued to create throughout the apartment. The Kings Library Penthouse is an unusual and versatile home that adapts from a glamorous entertaining space into family living. By adding artwork, a pod staircase and a grand piano to the hall, this Grade II Listed building has been sympathetically transformed to become a modern penthouse. Where were you born and where did you grow up? Michael: I was born in North Shore, Sydney, Australia, and that is where I grew up. Jonas: I was born on Lake Starnberg, Germany, and raised between the North Sea and the Alps. Can you explain your relevant training and work experience? Michael: Certainly. I have 35 years of experience crafting award-winning, future-focused carbon boats. Before founding Daedalus Yachts in 2016, I worked with notable companies like John McConaghy, the J&J brothers at Seaway Group (Greenline, OceanClass, Shipman, Skagen), and Gunboat. Throughout my career, I have been at the forefront of composite technology in various industries, and my work has earned 36 Boat of The Year awards in the marine industry. Jonas: I have over 10 years of design experience and have worked with various shipyards worldwide before co-founding my own yacht design studio with two French partners. After successfully establishing the brand and building a portfolio of clients worldwide, I joined Daedalus Yachts as Director of Design. I am responsible for the exterior and interior of all Daedalus-related projects, including the D100, the 100foot catamaran currently under consideration for the 2023 International Yacht and Aviation Awards. What would you consider the highlight of your career to date? Michael: The standout highlight of my career has been my role in conceiving, designing, and engineering the world’s first global range, zero fossil fuel luxury yacht, the D100. It is currently under construction at my shipyard in North Carolina and is also under consideration for the 2023 International Yacht and Aviation Awards. Jonas: I can point to many highlights. Every achievement has me excited for the “next big thing.” Where do you find inspiration for your work? Michael: I draw inspiration from various sources, including visionaries like Nicolas Tesla, the Wright Brothers, and Steve Jobs. I am also inspired by the natural world, particularly animals like the tropic bird and the manta ray, which exhibit remarkable design and capabilities. Jonas: I often find myself admiring the simplicity of designers such as Dieter Rams, whose work strives to distil complex ideas into elegant and straightforward solutions, eliminating unnecessary elements while ensuring clarity in both form and function. I also follow the works of architects like Calatrava, whose organic forms, spaces, and structures feel as if they are created by nature itself, as well as the minimalistic and timeless approach by John Pawson. Has your approach to work-life balance changed in recent years? Michael: Yes, I have made an effort to reduce my travel to boat shows and marine events to spend more time with my family and at my shipyard. Jonas: The pandemic has brought work home for a lot of people. Closed offices and “work from home” options have blended work and private life which has had its advantages and disadvantages. I feel that we are still trying to navigate this shift into nomadic work. I worked in a nomadic style long before the pandemic hit and strongly believe in collaborative work environments. Recent years have showed everyone that work does not necessarily have to be bound to a physical location and that has created enormous opportunities for many. What projects are you currently working on? Michael: My design, engineering, and production teams are working on projects that involve more efficient hull forms, foil shapes, and hydrogen propulsion systems. 50 Daedalus Yachts LLC

Jonas: I am currently working on the design of Daedalus Yachts’ flagship project, a 100-foot performance sailing catamaran (the D100), as well as various yacht projects ranging from 36 feet up to 72 feet. I particularly enjoy the initial concept phase of each project, as well as early conversations with the clients. As for the D-100, my colleagues and I are continuously pushing the envelope in what is possible in the yachting of tomorrow, ranging from autonomous sailing concepts to generating hydrogen from seawater and using it to recharge the yachts’ battery banks. Could you describe the project you are most proud of and why it was successful? Michael: I am most proud of the D100, a 100-foot yacht under construction at my shipyard. It stands out for its concept, design, use of zero-emission technology, and recycled composites. I believe it has the potential to make a significant impact on the ocean-going industry. Jonas: I have designed various award-winning yachts and interior products. Seeing a product being used as envisioned gives me a feeling of success. How would you describe your work and design style? Michael: I believe in maintaining a “purity of thought and of line,” emphasising simplicity and cleanliness. My ethos is similar to the Shakers, and I incorporate mathematical principles like Bernoulli distribution, pi, and Jacob’s Ladder into my designs. Jonas: I would describe my design style arising out of growing up in the birthplace of Bauhaus, studying in the Netherlands during the height of disruptive Dutch design, and starting my career in Italy, which is known for its timeless luxury-design legacy. As for my ethos, I strongly believe that we design for our fellow humans, which means that the final product must work visually, functionally, and in a holistic sense. How has the pandemic influenced your outlook on work and life? Michael: The pandemic has led me to believe in greater collaboration and sharing of ideas with like-minded individuals and businesses through the virtual environment. Jonas: The pandemic has changed the whole world in manners which we are still discovering day by day. It changed the way we interact with each other and has brought us closer while at the same time having us experience a level of solitude. It has given us time to think, reflect and develop, and I believe that it has catapulted us into the future with developments in sustainability, healthcare, AI, and design. What are your thoughts on the future of design? Michael: I believe that “non-terrestrial” forms from nature will guide future design and engineering concepts, including organic manufacturing. Jonas: I believe that advancements in technology are growing exponentially and that is heavily reflected in the design world. The focus on UX and UI will become even more dominant, and the physical design language will have to adapt even faster. Devices will move under our skin and into our bodies, and the lifestyle/experience of products will outweigh the form language. We will own less but experience more. Any final thoughts you would like to share? Michael: I believe that open-source collaboration and AI will play crucial roles in helping us design things that we can only dream of today. Jonas: We lived through a major change in society which gave us an enormous potential to rethink the way we approach design, sustainability, and community. Combined with fast-paced technology advancements, I am tremendously excited about what the future has in store for us.

THE POWER OF NOW We sail to all corners of the world. While our destinations are magnificent, the existing charted routes take us from one refueling station to another. Daedalus envisions open ocean holidays with destinations rationalized only by your heart’s desire. WIND, WATER, and SOLAR are the power plants that drive this inspiration of innovation. Clean energy in, clean air out. Yesterday is the day for fossil fuels, today is the future of zero emissions.

Where were you born and where did you grow up? I was born in Saigon Vietnam and lived in 28 Countries since then. Now I live Costa Mesa California most the year and part time in my home in Italy. Could you explain your relevant training and work experience? My training encompasses 20 years of design production with projects domestic and international. Working with design environments across many cultures has inspired a labyrinth of visuals, textures and journeys which now fills my creative palette. What would you consider the highlight of your career so far? In the last 6 years my highlights have been working on large hospitality projects which are casino based. They are hotels, restaurants and bars that all based within a casino environment. These projects have been deeply challenging because of the scale and speedy timelines for construction but at the end they were an immense education for my team and I. Each project was delivered with great success. How did achieving this make you feel? It brought greater focus to my design vision and allowed me to understand all the channels of creativity in which we my team and I can push out and produce. Where do you find inspiration for your work? I find all my inspiration through my travels. To be immersed in different cultures, colours, flavours and sounds. Music is also and DNA to my inspiration. It is like the conductor to the visual orchestra I am writing and drawing. Travel and music become me, as I become the next image of my design. How do you relax and maintain a work/life balance, and has this changed recently? I have no balance as my life is my work and my work is my life. I am trying to do more balance in my life but what is balance if I love what I do?! Sometimes I travel to my little sanctuary in Italy, to find peace and solace so that I can return to my passion for design again. What projects are you currently working on, and could you tell us a bit more about them? I am working on a full hospitality project which included a new hotel from ground up. Seven restaurant and bar projects, one night club and one new restaurant of our own. The hotel project we designed is part of a casino in Southern California. Also, we have designed three restaurant and bars in the same hotel. Additionally, we are designing five other restaurant and bars in the United States. A few of these are also in casinos.

54 Kenneth Ussenko Design

In which area(s) of the design sector do you primarily work? Hospitality Design & Food and Beverage. Could you describe the project you are most proud of to date and why it was a success? The project that I am most proud of was Morongo Casino and Resort. It was a project with bars and restaurants within the new casino expansion which we designed. A major undertaking to work on a 75,000 S.F. casino expansion and an additional 45,000 s.f. of new restaurants and bars while the casino was still operating with customers. At the end it turned out to be a great success because we gave this casino an elevated environment to match destinations in Los Vegas. How would you describe your work/design style and ethos? Our design style and ethos has always been driven by my fascination for historical architecture delivered on a modern canvas. If the project and vision of the journey allows it, this would be the path I usually take. I feel this ethos has been evolving these past few years into a more colourful version of this modern canvas. What are your thoughts on the future of design? I am hoping the future of design does not become too monochromatic. I feel that environments are starting to become too empty and clinical. I hope this is just a bump in the road...for the natural world has so much beauty in its love for colour and texture. I want to always embrace this in my work!!! What are your aims for the next twelve months and beyond? DESIGN DESIGN DESIGN and build a new colour palette for myself and my life journey ahead. In which direction are you moving from a design perspective, and how is your work evolving? I am moving in from the design perspective of always being a sponge, to absorb from the world around me as much as I can so that I can be a better storyteller. How is your work evolving? My work is evolving day by day into a stronger tool, to tell a more interesting story, bringing more joy and comfort to the people that experiences our work. Any final thoughts? I am grateful every day to be able to walk the path of creativity and to be amongst others that share this same journey with me. It is a life of passion and perseverance and I embrace each day which I am lucky enough to live it.

Where were you born/where did you grow up? Born in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Grew up just outside of the city on a beautiful acreage in DeWinton and went to school in small town Okotoks. Please explain your relevant training/work experience? In 2010, I completed the Bachelor of Applied Interior Design program at Mount Royal University. Since then, I have collaborated with leading professionals in the interior design industry on multiple residential and commercial projects. Predominantly, we serve clientele in and around the local Calgary area, in western Canada and recently expanding into the United States of America. Please describe the highlight of your career to date. For eight consecutive years, Avid Interior Design Inc. has received The Best of Houzz Awards for both Service and Design. Since 2020, Avid Interior Design is honoured to be listed as The Best of Calgary for Interior Design. My dedication to this career has resulted in international recognition as I was nominated by The Design Society for The Designer of the Year Award 2019. As well, Avid Interior Design Inc. was shortlisted in 4 categories for The International Interior Design and Architecture Awards 2019. Most recently, in 2021, 2022, and 2023, I was published in The World’s Leading Design Names Volume 11, 12, and 13. Where do you find inspiration for your work? Travel. When I am in a new environment that is completely foreign to me, I find that so invigorating. Most of the inspiration for my latest projects has been a result of my travels. How do you relax and find your work/life balance? A day at the spa is the ultimate way to chill. That, or a nice beach vacation. If neither of those options are available, doing hot yoga is great for soul revival. What projects are you currently working on? There are quite a few new custom-built homes and home renovation projects that we are currently working on that we are so excited about! We just completed a new built home and a few home renovations in which we are still working on the finishing touches and furniture procurement for. Our restaurant project, FinePrint, and private club, Heavily Redacted, just opened up downtown Calgary, and the feedback has been so well received. Tell us a little more about these projects... For all of our projects, we handle every aspect of the interior design process – from concept to completion. Avid’s team works closely with each client to create a custom design that combines both the client’s needs and desires, in Anna’s signature style. Whether it’s a commercial project, a custom new built home, a renovation, or furniture and décor procurement, Avid’s commitment is to take a sincere and personal approach with each client to ensure the design vision is carried through.

58 Avid Interior Design Inc.

What area(s) of the design sector do you work in for the most part? Predominantly, our area of focus is residential interior design, but we do commercial interior design as well like restaurants, cafes, offices, etc. We love the variety of projects that we get to work on. We do everything from custom new builds to renovations, furniture and decor procurement for private clients. Please describe the project you are most proud of to date, with reasons why this was a success? Our latest restaurant project, FinePrint, just opened. Again. It was only open for three months and devastatingly, it had a fire which forced the restaurant to close its doors, and we had to do the design twice. How we managed the stress and chaos of this situation to help our clients reopen their doors was short of miraculous. How would you describe your work/design style/ethos? My design intent is always to create spaces that embody the elusive balance between sophistication and simplicity, polished and inviting. Timeless design is always our top priority. How has the pandemic changed your outlook on work/life? Change is the only thing that is constant in life. As a result of the pandemic, it has presented us with the opportunity to be adaptive and optimise our approach in working collaboratively with our trades and clients. When everyone was spending so much time locked in their homes during the pandemic, it showed us all how important it is to love the place you call home. For me personally, I have embraced the flexibility of working remotely, and it has been so convenient to correspond with clients and consultants on projects that are abroad. What are your thoughts on the future of design? As designers, it is our responsibility to take a sustainable design approach with each and every design decision that we make. Sharing our knowledge with our clients and valuing our planet by eliminating the use of harmful and toxic products needs to be top priority. Along with that, technology is advancing at an incredibly fast rate, so we are always planning ahead with the potential to incorporate the latest and greatest into all of our projects. Which direction are you moving in from a design perspective? We have recently expanded into working on projects in the United States of America and we are diligently working to further our reach. How is your work evolving? Every day I work to better myself, to be the best version of me, and hopefully as a result, that will show through into my designs, my creative work, and in turn, my business.

Where were you born and where did you grow up? I was born in Cape Town, South Africa, and I grew up there. Could you explain your relevant training and work experience? I have a background in Industrial Design from the IDI institute in Johannesburg, South Africa, and I also hold an Architecture Degree from Chelsea Design School in London. What would you consider the highlight of your career so far? The highlight of my career is the recognition my team and I have received worldwide from clients who want to work with us on their homes, hotels, and restaurants. How did achieving this make you feel? It has been a long and winding road that we all in this field need to take and getting to this part of the road in my career keeps me going for more - exhilarating is the best way to describe it. Where do you find inspiration for your work? Travel for me is the most important avenue of inspiration because you are always discovering even if you go back to your favourite places- as you see the world you visually take in so much as a designer that can be reinterpreted in so many ways. How do you relax and maintain a work/life balance, and has this changed recently? I have decided to live all year round in East Hampton and reverse commute to New York a few days a week. This is the ultimate lifestyle balance and this allows for less stress which is a game changer. What projects are you currently working on, and could you tell us a bit more about them? I am currently working on several projects, including the Thompson hotel in Cabo, Mexico, Curio Hotel in Austin, a luxury home in Santa Monica, and many more. These projects encompass architectural, interior, and decoration elements, with one of the most inspirational being a concrete condominium complex on the ocean in Punta Mita, Mexico. In which area(s) of the design sector do you primarily work? I primarily work in interior design, but I am also involved in ground-up architecture projects, including a 10-story all-black hotel building on concrete stilts in Louisville. Could you describe the project you are most proud of to date and why it was a success? I broke the mould and built an all-black home for myself in East Hampton in 2014 - nobody was thinking black homes by the sea.

70 MARKZEFF

This modern barn complex was just supposed to be a weekend getaway home and now I live in this house full time with my family and it is a huge success for me personally as this project brings joy every day and has inspired all my new work since. How would you describe your work/design style and ethos? My design style is constantly evolving, as I am continually inspired. I enjoy juxtaposing rich and poor materials and using vintage elements within a modern context. This contrast remains my favourite design formula. How has the pandemic changed your outlook on work/life? The pandemic has prompted reflection on how we live and work. In some cases, it has led to improvements in both aspects, as it forced us to recognize the importance of staying in one place and creating comfortable, functional environments. How do you predict the pandemic will change the global design sector? It has changed how we all deal with our spaces / our hotels and restaurants- the world showers down for a year and so people around the world recognized certain aspects that for sone reason they had not seen before - like how important it is to stay where you are and live and work - not always on the run and as a result this has had a great effect in design. What are your thoughts on the future of design? The future - it is a little uncertain as I believe we are entering a hundred years of huge change globally. Pandemics / global warming and conflicts has made design very important as the world evolves. I see it every day and I fear that the new buzz word AI is not necessarily a good thing for design. What are your aims for the next twelve months and beyond? In the next twelve months and beyond, I am working on my new lighting collection and look forward to seeing it come to fruition. I plan to be more disciplined and controlled in the use of my ideas and design tricks. In which direction are you moving from a design perspective, and how is your work evolving? I aim to have a greater impact on users’ lives through my work, inspiring them and enhancing their experiences. My work is evolving towards this goal of enriching the user experience. Any final thoughts? I never want to stop. I thank the higher power for my gift. I love what I do every day.

Where were you born/where did you grow up? I was born in Dallas, Texas but had an unconventional upbringing. My father was a serial entrepreneur starting businesses all around the country, so we moved often. I grew up all around the U.S. and later ended up back in Texas.

colours and patterns that more conservative clients would shy away from. The house itself, being ‘80s modern, allowed me to play on that. The ‘80s were a time of bold, colourful patterns and maximalism. The result is a lively, playful home full of personality.

Please explain your relevant training/work experience? I came into Interior Design as a second career, starting out in the furniture industry and later making a shift into my current niche which is designing for large-scale remodels. Designing for remodels is fraught with surprises, but I fell in love with the challenge of finding pragmatic solutions that solve the problem while keeping the integrity of the design. I am a Certified Master Kitchen and Bath Designer. I opened my firm, Younique Designs 16 years ago in San Antonio, Texas and have been designing for over 30 years.

How would you describe your work/design style/ethos? I do not have a specific design aesthetic but rather I design for the individual client. With that said though, regardless of the aesthetic I would say that my designs are generally bold with defined focal points. I like to use texture, bold colour, or pattern to accentuate various aspects while using negative space and more subdued colours for less prominent features within the design.

Please describe the highlight of your career to date. I have been fortunate to have worked on so many exciting projects both in the U.S. and Internationally. I suppose it is true for most designers and creatives that the last project you have completed always feels like your best work and the one you are most proud of until the next one comes along. I began a large remodel project in 2020 just prior to the beginning of the pandemic. The project stalled for a while and was finally completed in early 2022. Since its completion, the project has gained attention both on a national and international level with both the Kitchen and Primary Bathroom winning first place in the National Kitchen and Bath Design Competition and also being shortlisted in the prestigious International Design and Architecture Awards hosted by design et al in London England. Where do you find inspiration for your work? Inspiration comes from anywhere and everywhere, but mostly from my clients and from the architecture of the house itself. My design is entirely client-focused, prioritising function specific to the way each client lives within their home and reflective of their personalities. I am also deeply rooted in preserving the architectural integrity of a house so that the newly remodelled space flows seamlessly and feels original to the home. How do you relax and find your work/life balance? I am a single Mum of two kids, one of whom has special needs, so life is hectic. I am very strict with myself about keeping work within working hours so that I am fully present for my kids when it is family time. I have always loved a good adventure and travel as often as I can. It is fun getting to see the world and experience various cultures through the eyes of my kids. I am lucky to be able to pass on that curiosity to them. When at home in San Antonio, I recharge my battery by hiking in the Hill Country or painting. Has this changed in recent years? I think life is always changing as we grow and evolve and as our perspectives change, so do our priorities. As an entrepreneur, your business takes on a life of its own, and it is this thing that you have created and nourished like a child. Like a child, it also demands a lot of your attention and it is easy to get sucked in. In recent years, I have definitely prioritised my time with my kids. After all, unlike a business, they eventually grow up and leave. Our time with them is fleeting.. Please describe the project you are most proud of to date, with reasons why this was a success? I would have to say it is a full-gut remodel of a house built in the early 1980s. The clients are young, fun, and unafraid to take a chance and be bold with their style. How has the pandemic changed your outlook on work/life? I would say life has taught me, but the pandemic drove the point home that everything can change in an instant and there is no contingency plan. Sometimes life throws you a curveball and no amount of planning could have prepared you for it. It is good to be flexible and able to re-evaluate/re-prioritise in an instant. How do you predict the pandemic will change the global design sector? I have already seen a change in the way we are living since the pandemic. Where we had been seeing open-concept spaces so that we could be more communal, the pandemic created a need for quiet space, whether to work from home or just a place for self-reflection and self-care. I am designing primary bathrooms that are more like retreats or spas where homeowners can spend time relaxing and pampering themselves versus a place to just get clean. I am also seeing requests from homeowners for materials and fixtures that are easier to clean such as wall-hung toilets, self-cleaning toilets, anti-microbial surfaces, and handsfree faucets that reduce the spread of germs. I feel like this trend is here to stay. What are your thoughts on the future of design? The future of design will be about healthy buildings and sustainability. There is currently legislation in the U.S. to do away with natural gas in homes due to potential health concerns. We are paying more attention to minimising offgassing and surfaces that kill microbes on contact. As we continue to pay attention to the way our homes and buildings are serving us and begin demanding more of them in terms of health, safety, and welfare, we will only see this trend grow. Moreover, I believe the trend toward sustainability and environmental consciousness is just beginning. There is so much more we can do and it is our responsibility as designers and architects to design buildings and homes that utilise less of our planet’s resources and cut down on ecological rucksack. Which direction are you moving in from a design perspective? My three words for the year are Innovation, Function, and Ergonomics. How is your work evolving? I want my designs to be truly bespoke and innovative and believe the only way to accomplish that is by not paying attention to what others are doing. It is difficult to not be influenced by what is “trending” if that is what you are seeing every day. I try to march to the beat of my own drum. Final thoughts? At the end of the day, good design is about getting inside the client’s head and truly listening. I want to fully understand the vision, and know the pain points they are currently living with so that I can design a space that is not only beautiful but anticipates their every need.

“The concept for the interior was not to design a radical, impractical or difficult to build interior but rather a design that would be universally admired and was comfortable yet chic”

M/Y Victorious is a unique combination of a robust explorer yacht and an elegant, comfortable superyacht concept. She has been designed for long-range passages in testing sea conditions. More than 14 years in the making, including construction that spans three continents and a new yard created to complete her build, Victorious has quite the back story. After purchasing the unfinished yacht, the owner decided to add a 6m extension to the stern so that it would be capable of carrying his beloved sports boats if required. He founded his own shipyard, Ak Yachts, in his native Turkey to complete the colossal project. Ak is a father of three with a need for speed and an off-road champion who has competed in the Dakar Rally and owns a handful of power boats. He wanted something that could transport his power boats if need be, but also give him the ability to travel the world with his children. With over 1300sqm of guest space on board, Victorious, with her rugged exterior lines, has a wide variety of communal areas including the Sun Deck Lounge with a central fireplace. The area is called Gentleman’s club and is one of Ak’s favourite areas on board. Located on the top deck this air-conditioned area is probably the biggest clue to the man behind the boat. The space is dominated by a wood-burning marble fireplace. To allow for this the top deck had to be fitted with separate air conditioning and air cleaning systems. As well as huge, curved sofa, the glass-fronted wine cellar, cigar humidor and backlit shelves displaying vintage whiskies and cognacs, the lounge has bespoke speakers, designed by a sound engineer friend of the owner’s, adding to the ambience of his favourite area on board. It was also designated as the boat’s smoking area with all the upholstery, leathers and decoration impervious to cigarette and cigar smoke. The top deck may indulge specific owner requests but elsewhere the yacht has been designed to have broad appeal on the explorer charter market. This is predominantly thanks to London’s H2 Yacht Design studio. The concept for the interior was not to design a radical, 82 Ak Yachts

impractical or difficult to build interior but rather a design that would be universally admired and was comfortable yet chic. The yacht is decked in plenty of warm teaks, eucalyptus and bleached oaks alongside light leathers and silver travertine to create a beautiful neutral backdrop, upon which touches of macassar, portoro marble, black slate and other contrasting finishes are added to striking visual effect. In addition to a number of glass sculptures and bespoke chandelier, the yacht is also punctuated with backlit onyx, woven leathers, rippled glass, beaten metals, 3D marble patterns and specialist finishes ensuring every space has it’s own ‘special something’ that is sought on superyachts. With the charter market in mind, Ak has also added a host of additional features to his original design brief. “For this level of boat, clients are expecting extras – extra Jacuzzis, extra dance floor, swimming pools, et cetera,” Ak explained. Bearing the charter market in mind, Ak wanted to ensure that his family and friends would also enjoy Victorious. The yacht has 12 cabins, so when it is used privately, it can host up to 24 guests. The full-beam owner’s suite is on the bridge deck facing aft, with his and hers en-suite finished in Calacatta marble and dark wood cabinets and a walk-in wardrobe. Large windows on port and starboard allow light to flood in, while doors open onto a private deck complete with a spa pool and sun beds upholstered in creamcoloured fabric. Forward of the master are two simple en suite cabins for his children. The rest of the accommodation is split between the main and lower decks. When Ak purchased the yacht some of the fit-out had already started on the lower deck cabins so the designers had to work with what they had and transformed them into more of a beach house feel. They hand-painted the wood that was already in place and completely remodelled the bathrooms, installed new doors on the cabinets and chose new marble. As they went further up the yacht there was nothing built so they could start fresh. A full-width VIP suite finished in grey tones is forward on the main deck. Featuring a

private seating area, it ensures that the yacht can appeal to dual charterers. # A further personal touch on the main deck is a dedicated playroom. Here, bright rainbow-coloured cushions hide storage cupboards that can hold a plethora of toys and activities. With a world map on the wall designed to inspire future trips, this dedicated space allows children to be children. The design team also made sure that the space could be multifunctional and easily converted into an adventure room, teaching room or lecture space. The idea of flexible spaces extends to the other living areas. The upper deck, which overlooks a forward helipad, has a curved seating area complete with a baby grand piano. Behind it is a formal dining area, with a three-tiered chandelier and an additional seating area which can also be used as a business area with its mirror television that can be used for conference calls. Outside spaces are focused around communal entertaining – there is outdoor banquet-style seating for 16 guests on the upper deck aft – and having fun in the water. The 200-square-metre beach club, has a counter-current pool, gym, massage room, beauty salon and, of course, a traditional hammam. Victorious’ interiors invite guests to chill and spend quality time with friends or family in the various social areas. “We tried to make a different boat: friendly, easy to live in, comfortable, safe and luxurious. And I believe we have achieved this.”Ak stated. Victorious is a platform for a selfsufficient motor yacht concept with large tenders and amazing long-range cruising capacity but refuses to neglect the finer intricate details of a sophisticated but family orientated modern superyacht.

Where were you born and where did you grow up? I was born on September 22, 1978, in Surrey, British Columbia. However, I grew up in Northern Alberta. I was raised in a log house with no running water, an outhouse, and a wood-burning stove. Between the daily chores of chopping wood and filling water jars, I spent most of my childhood exploring the wild wilderness with my border collie, Prince. Please explain your relevant training/work experience. I graduated high school from W.J. Mouat in 1996 and then immediately completed basic training with the Canadian Armed Forces Reserves that summer, being awarded the Layers Trophy as the top gunner to graduate. I began my post-secondary education at the University of the Fraser Valley and graduated top of my class in 1997 as Class President of the Architectural Drafting and Design Program. One of my projects from the program was even chosen to be built. I continued my studies at the British Columbia Institute of Technology and the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC) Syllabus between 1997 and 1998. “Inside, the interior incorporates earth tone furniture and vintage touches, the timber and wood beams, which meld into plaster walls, were stained and treated naturally. For the exterior, copper hardware is utilised, taking advantage of its ability to oxidize and produce a shade of blue mimicking the colour of the ocean through time”

Located on the north end of Jupiter Island, Florida, and owned by multi-generational cheese importers, this property is also characterised by the 45-degree shift in its floor plan to allow Atlantic Ocean views from almost every room while enhancing natural light, depth, and a casual indooroutdoor flow. Wabi-Sabi, the Japanese design principle that emphasises the perfectly imperfect, is imperative to every aspect of this home. The design principles combined with views of the ocean inspired the architecture of this home, which recalls that of the Florida vernacular with materials that would be found in the surroundings, and beckon a time a wood shake roof, simple lime washed stucco and local coral stone. This house was intended to be passed from generation to generation. With that concept in mind, the material palate was carefully curated with the intention that it would both age in harmony with the ocean’s environment, but also exude a memory of previous experiences and generations. Inside, the interior incorporates earth tone furniture and vintage touches, the timber and wood beams, which meld into plaster walls, were stained and treated naturally. For the exterior, copper hardware is utilised, taking advantage of its ability to oxidize and produce a shade of blue mimicking the colour of the ocean through time. It was important to the designers to catalogue the history of the house by employing finishes that would age gracefully leaving the marks of previous generations. The Japanese refer to this

approach as Wabi-Sabi—finding beauty in nature’s imperfections. The floors are raw oak planks that have been fumed and gently waxed to present the natural beauty of the material. The walls and ceilings are a composition of waxed plaster and lime cypress, creating a soft elegance welcoming of the colours and light of the oceanfront setting. The house makes an intentional angle shift, the Kitchen and Family Room reside within a wing of the house that faces southeast rather than directly east. This shift presents a different view of the beach and ocean, looking along the coast of sea grapes and coconut palms with the tropical Atlantic beyond. The Kitchen is cypress wood that has been coated in a lime wash and stripped to reveal a beautiful aged cypress. The counter tops are limestone sourced in Romania that resemble the colour of the local beach sand. The ceiling is composed of cypress beams and girders with areas of plaster creating a play of light and shadow. Progressing up the stair case in the Living room the second floor is again split. While the South Wing was designed as a large family office, the North wing is dedicated to the children’s bedrooms and the Ocean Terrace; a magnificent post and beam covered terrace overlooking the ocean and entire property. This balcony has been purposely orientated to capture the breeze on any day giving respite from the tropical sun. Also on the property, a Guest House provides guests with a

private space with uncompromising views of the ocean. The property also contains a tennis court nestled into the landscape surrounded by a gym and generator building. Thomas Melhorn have been Shortlisted for the Living Space – America Award in The International Design and Architecture Awards 2022. When discussing their shortlisting, Catherine Dickinson, Marketing Manager at Thomas Melhorn said “It’s important for society to come together and learn about design through the eyes of different cultures. Design has a great effect on our minds and values and coming together across many countries connects us in a deeper way”. Beach front, estate homes often become a show piece. Even though this home is sizable, it is quiet and allows the views of the Atlantic Ocean to be the star of the show. The home is a beautiful wellappointed theatre that allows inhabitants to quiet their mind and enjoy the beauty of the world in front of them. This beachfront home differs from so many others of its size because its design is humble and close consideration was taken for windows to frame views instead of large glass windows that blur the lines of interior and exterior space. This project was the result of amazing synergy between architect, interior designer, builder and client. Each had goals that aligned and the result is truly spectacular.
