It has been an incredible year for European brand Sarp Yachts, culminating in two of their stunning designs being nominated in separate categories for this year’s awards. It is testament to how highly they are regarded by the industry that both of their designs were crowned winners. The award for ‘Concept over 40m’ went to ‘Sarp 46’; an eponymous and exquisite design worthy of being this year’s number one and baring the company’s prestigious name.

dark bronzes, silvers and grey stained ash veneer. This theme is extended throughout the yacht for complete continuity. Organic, marine animal inspired shapes dominate the design with flowing curves and sleek, suave finishes which feel entirely at home on the sea. The ambiance is one of sophistication and elegance, interwoven with clean simplicity of a design that results in an inviting, comfortable and relaxing atmosphere.

Sarp were tasked with creating a motoryacht which would stand the test of time. The intention for the design was to give character to the vessel in every possible setting she may sail to. For this her lines had to be full flowing, well-proportioned and fresh; contemporary chic is the essence of the Sarp 46 concept.

Large screens feature in the main saloon entrance with petrified patterned leaves set between sheets of clear glass which allows natural light to thrive in the heart of the yacht. Wall finishes are a balance of wooden planks and pewter coloured slubby silk wall paper, creating an indulgent contrast of textures with stunning effect.

For the internal aspect of Sarp 46, the company worked in partnership with the chief designer at Adam Lay Studio. The privately owned design company excels in the designing of unique and specialist superyacht interiors. For over a decade, Adam Lay Studio has worked tirelessly to establish a truly international clientele and to select only the world’s best shipyards to work with on each design. Established in 2003 the multiple award-winning boutique interior design company based in Hampshire, England still favours a handson and personal approach to all of their collaborations and Sarp liased with the company director himself throughout the entire design process. Adam Lay oversaw each design and instillation decision for the Sarp 46 motor yacht and it is for perhaps this exact reason that the concept embodies such a liveable and individualised spirit.

Customised to suit the décor in each cabin, satin nickel door and cabinet hardware add a touch of refined sparkle to the calm and comfortable backdrop for the most private and personal region of the yacht’s internal aspect. Honed stone tiles and flooring in the bathrooms compliment the fine Dornbracht tapware and accessories and are enhanced by soft, smooth pebbles laid within the bathroom floor to add further texture and richness to the design.

When describing his creation Lay said, “The interior concept of the Sarp Yachts 46m motor yacht blends loft apartment styling and mountain chalet influences with a combination of high end natural timber and special metal finishes. The aim was to produce an elegant interior interwoven with a clean simplicity of design. Intended to make a sophisticated statement with a strong visual impact, both the shipyard Sarp Yachts and the interior builder Ulutas have put quality of finish at the very top of their agenda to showcase the design in the best possible light.” Taking inspiration from natural materials and textures, the on-board design features open grained planked wooden floors, quality leathers and intricate metal detailing to produce a distinguished colour palette of rich

For the soft furnishing elements, an exhaustive list of the world’s best materials and designers was complied. Minotti sofas, Glyn Peter Machin and Giorgetti chairs were selected to bring maximum comfort and style to the living quarters of the Sarp 46. Superior fabrics by Rubelli, Weitzner, Lelievre, Chase Erwin, Romo, Kravet and Armani Casa complete the interior together with highlights of bright colour, bold graphics and accents for dramatic effect. Intended to make a sophisticated statement with a strong visual impact, the outcome is a wonderful marriage of harmonious and clean lined design combined with subtle textures, tones and finishes that delight the senses by encouraging relaxation and enjoyment. Whilst the Sarp 46 concept was one in which luxury was the primary aspect, three fundamental principles remained paramount to the entire project: safety first, form to satisfy function and maximum use of space. In order to fulfill each of these aspects in their entirety, the design team set out a plan to ensure every element of their design was executed to satisfy the key principles. The yacht’s shape and size was carefully refined

to stay just below the 500 grosston mark whilst the space within was utilised with skill in order to maximise its potential. Steel was the obvious choice for a strong and reliable hull with ample tank capacity; ensuring the Sarp 46 would be both powerful and durable for years to come. The team also opted for epoxy composite to construct the curvy superstructure. This allowed them to save weight from the superstructure and fairing compound without compromising any aspect of her ability . These intelligent but ambitious design decisions became a reality thanks to the diligence and experience of our Sarp’s yard manager Emre Sandan and his team. Under his omnipotent watch, the hull was analysed in depth by CTO of Gdansk using cfd and tank test methods for low resistance and reduced wave profile. Watertight integrity was paramount in the design agenda, hence the incorporation at least two additional watertight bulkheads and cofferdams into the hull structure. Never one to cut corners, Sarp’s team spent many hours honing the styling with 3d design tools. A scale model of the concept was built ahead of plans finalised in order to iron out any discrepancies ahead of the design being approved. Sarps house design and engineering team were in contact at every stage of outfitting to ensure the yacht came together in a carefully planned and perfectly executed manor. This guaranteed a level of quality enviable by even the most established European yards. Whilst building a custom yacht in Turkey is normally very good value for money Sarp were not satisfied with being ‘normal.’ It was simply not enough for them to deliver a feat of design; they desired to make luxury affordable and liveable in a way unknown to most in the trade. Sarp Yachts have set themselves a philosophy to pursue the best of quality and attain the top finish where every euro spent adds something important and elevates the design to better itself each time. The Sarp 46m is a truly exceptional feat of engineering, in addition to being a masterpiece of design. It is clear that every inch of this project was planned and analysed to ensure the finished project was one of unrivalled excellence. All of this considered it is perhaps no surprise that the award was voted as this year’s winner in its category. One can only imagine what brilliance they will offer with each coming year.
