This month we are giving you a final sneak-preview of some of the projects shortlisted for The International Design & Architecture Awards this year. With 297 shortlisted design schemes in total, this is the largest awards to date and in my opinion the most exciting. The standard and scope of projects are incredible, the design schemes varied and in short, as a collection, are nothing short of inspirational. In our next regular issue of design et al, we will bring you some of the winners; over the course of the
next six months we will endeavour to select some of our favourite schemes and some runners up and show you the projects in more detail. In the meantime, you will of course decide the outcome - with voting open for four weeks, the decision will be yours. We very much look forward to bringing you your winners next issue. “This home is the epitome of design luxury.
This property is situated on a South-West orientated plot of nearly 1,600 sqm, in the Spanish mountains overlooking the Mediterranean Sea and golf course below. The property in Benahavis, Marbella was tasked to the architect, Carlos Lamas, who was set to transform the villa and give it an interior design of a lifetime. The design brief given for Alqueria was to work with the difficult typography of the plot and create a luxurious villa over multiple stories with vast open plan living spaces. This was achieved with the work of Carlos Lamas, along with the developers Designa Properties. Carlos Lamas and his team are currently celebrating their shortlisting at the Design and Architecture Awards within the Luxury Residence Europe category for their stunning work on the Alqueria 27-C property. Set over 3 levels, the villa is accessed from the top floor with a beautiful entrance and solarium. On the lower floors, the space comprises of an open plan kitchen, dining area and lounge which creates an exquisite living space opening out onto the covered terrace and infinity pool area, blurring the lines between indoor and outdoor living whilst taking advantage of the stunning panoramic views. The entrance to the villa is via the automatic sliding doors, it allows for access to the large rooftop terrace, providing spectacular views of the nearby golf course and the beautiful sights of the Mediterranean. The first-floor homes 4 beautiful bedrooms which all have their own en-suites. Moreover, the master bedroom located in the master wing has its very own walk-in-wardrobe. 20 design et al
The ground floor homes the living area, kitchen and dining room. On the west side there is an extra room which can be used as an office or bedroom with its own private bathroom. The soaring ceilings are indeed, impressive to see, allowing plenty of natural light to flow in and large open plan rooms lend themselves perfectly to being able to see the beautiful views of the surrounding mountains and the villa’s infinity pool. Throughout this property the contemporary ambiance exudes class and sophistication. In many rooms, including the kitchen there is a marble finish throughout. The white marble on the island in the centre of the kitchen homes a built-in sink and plenty of space for entertaining. The crisp white is so clean and pure it is almost completely reflective. The marble effect is further displayed within the bathroom. Here, the guest will be greeted to a stylish space, which is clean and elegant. It also features a ‘his and her’ hand basins and mirrors, highlighting the lavishness of this home. Furthermore, from the bathtub the user will be able to enjoy the views of the mountains and sea in complete privacy. This home is the epitome of design luxury. The 3 guest bedrooms, as well as the master suite are completed with their own en-suites, additionally, each room has the extended luxury of the panoramic views. Adding to the luxury within this home you will find the ultimate entertainment centre, located in the basement where there is a gym, sauna and luxury home cinema. environmental impact. The outdoor space features a beautiful infinity pool, sun lounges and a space for outdoor dining, ideal for entertaining guests. Throughout the villa the style is clean and contemporary with premium finishes and details, ensuring the property stands out in an area already synonymous with luxury. This look seamlessly upholds itself throughout the property, from the modern appearance at the exterior of the villa to the contemporary interior design. The villa itself is sophisticated and modern. Located just a few minutes away from Marbella’s fabulous city centre, there is plenty of luxurious restaurants and bars to choose from to enjoy the time at the villa. As for the design, both the interior and exterior design are striking. There is a clear and distinctive attention to detail throughout. In addition to the luxury design, Alqueria includes several modern technological features. Underfloor heating and air conditioning throughout, as well as the Sonos sound system which is programmed to work in multiple rooms and is controlled via the Sonos system app within the living room area. This is also connected to the home theatre system for audio and visual content. The technological advancements here add to the contemporary styled home, which makes the most of its beautiful views.

The owner of several car dealerships in Ramsey lake, Sudbury, a city north of Toronto and his wife, hired Atelier Cachet to design the interior of their 14,000-square foot estate for themselves and their three children. The modern gem which took 3 years to build has 7 baths, 4 powder rooms and 7 bedrooms including 1500 square feet of terraces, an infinity edge pool and spa. Speaking about this project was the firm’s principle designer, Nathalie Tremblay said “I didn’t want to go to the original house because I didn’t want to be distracted by what I got from them during the first meeting.” The designer took a fearless approach, shifting the vision, layout and finishes in the initial plan drawn up by architect Roch Belair, a friend of the couple, to create a Boutique Hotel look and feel. “I met them at the Four Seasons (Toronto) and they were telling me things they liked about the hotel and that they wanted it very modern and luxury. We knew immediately it was a fit,” Nathalie added. The home has multi-levels of luxury with stunning views from all floors facing the lake including a soaring double height, glass window wall. Bone Structure® is a steel construction system that creates high performance, energy efficient homes, and is inspired by the aerospace industry was used for the building structure. It allowed for soaring ceilings, large spans and extensive openings with minimum interior load bearing walls. The design works well because there is a continuous flow of energy between each space that seamlessly connects and unified everything. The modern architecture and refined layout provides excellent functionality, flexibility and 30 design et al
luxury with a sense of wellbeing. The design has a fluid conversation between all the different components and the interior merges seamlessly with the exterior. Rich, deep colours and textures are injected to the neutral scheme to add high contrast and juxtaposition between materials. The design offers a sense of balance and proportion; rough/smooth, matte/shiny, masculine/feminine, warm/ cool. Atelier Cachet’s favourite aspect of the project was designing and implementing strong architectural elements throughout including the custom 3D metal screens, the black wide wood runner on the ceiling and up the wall, the wood panelling on the walls, the columns wrapped with wood panels and a chrome belt insert, the asymmetrical composition of the marble fireplace mantle and stone wall, the transparent wine cellar glass enclosure and the smoke glass window wall. The infusion of these key elements adds dimension, depth, proportions, gravity, textures and interest to a vast open floor plan. It frames views and clearly defines the vertical and horizontal line+ planes of this voluminous space. These impactful elements bring style, attitude, luxury and gives the home a strong distinctive pulse. The key challenges the designers had were the overall complexity of the project and to seamlessly integrate all the intricate design elements without compromising or having a disconnection between the design and construction. High level of craftsmanship and artisan skills were required for the project. Constant interaction and collaboration work with the design team, sub-contractors and consultants was essential for the vision to come to life and the success of the project. The joinery throughout has a unified style for a seamless appearance.
The home integrates with its environment by incorporating stone of the façade both inside and out. The clear majority of Sudbury is based on its stone surroundings, being that the designers are in the North portion of Canada. Many of the wood elements on the walls and floor also remind you that they are in a portion of the boreal forest. By opening the doors between the kitchen and the outdoor environment one can also appreciate how the house integrates well with the water around it. Moreover, the infinity pool edge makes you feel like there is no space between it and the lake. Large spans of glass were also used inside and out to lighten the feel of the house and its surroundings as well as again provide light and airy views of all spaces within the homes environment. An emphasis was placed on ensuring that the finishes and textures flow organically throughout with a suitable transition from interior to exterior environment. When speaking about their shortlisting at the Awards, Nathalie stated “The International Design and Architecture Awards recognise excellence on a global scale and highlight the importance of design for business and society. They are a group that recognise, celebrate, promote design visionaries, and emerging talents. It’s also an opportunity to showcase the latest development in design, encourage mind creativity and inspire the next generation.” Atelier Cachet have created the desired Boutique Hotel finish at the Hidden Gem property. Throughout there is the sense of modern luxury, along with design that offer the fine lines between masculine and feminine, and warm and cool.

The Lodge is a 5,400 square foot, five-bedroom luxury chalet, located within Courchevel 1850. The appointed designers, Morpheus were responsible for specifying the interior architecture, base build, soft furnishings and accessories. Morpheus are currently celebrating their shortlisting at the International Design and Architecture Awards within the Ski Chalet category due to this impressive renovation. Morpheus are an awardwinning design firm, with an experience of over 20 years they have been creating designs across the globe in some of the most desired locations. They aim to create designs with a mindful and holistic approach, their mission is to produce one of a kind design which are incredible distinctive designs. They pride themselves on creating designs which are timeless and exceptional.

really captures the surrounding environment and brings it to life within this luxury chalet so there is a seamless transition from outside to inside.
The design brief stated that the design had to be original and timeless, and incorporate the latest technology such as an integrated lighting system, home cinema and spa facilities. The end look must be comfortable, welcoming and relaxed but show an elevated level of skill and craftsmanship. In addition, the client enjoys everything the mountains has to offer including both the summer and winter seasons, so the design must be adaptable and accommodating to this. Therefore, the design was to compliment all functional aspects of mountain side living and give thought to the practical elements of everyday life. It was also required that the design was to work in harmony and an external company to create a brand identity for the chalet to give an even more luxurious feel and bring the branding into the design, and the delivery was to be completed within one year of appointment.

Morpheus’ favourite aspect of the project is the view looking towards the fireplace joinery because there are so many elements that link the design with the dream aspect, from the bespoke doors, base build and FF&E items to the last carefully selected accessories. There are countless textures and shapes within this space featured in the furniture and base build representing the cracked ice from the dream and the earthy, rich colours from the surrounding environment. For the team, this space really highlights and captures the entire vision of the project. 38 design et al
The design really captures the surrounding environment and brings it to life within this luxury chalet so there is a seamless transition from outside to inside. Every aspect has been designed with a purpose and fully takes into consideration all the natural surroundings to bring the design context and relevance as Morpheus bring into every project. All Morpheus projects begin with a dream translation and a huge part of this process is extensive research into any projects natural surroundings. Being in the Alps, there are so many natural elements that are constantly changing throughout the seasons allowing for huge design potential. The designers used combination of textured, intricate materials throughout taking inspiration from geological features and the complex composition of ice with natural rough-hewn stone creating a harmony with the external environment. Throughout the Lodge, Morpheus collaborated with lighting designers Rocco Borghese, in particular the chandelier above the dining table was made out of hand blown cracked glass shaped to resemble cracked ice creating a puzzle of 100s of pieces. The amount of design detail and skill that went into the creation of this is clear in the finished product. Morpheus also collaborated with Officina Coppola to design the bespoke panel on the front of the kitchen unit which is almost a piece of art developed from the concept of the cracked and melting ice directly from the brief and dream created by Morpheus again, directly linking the whole scheme together in the smaller detail. Following their shortlisting at the Awards, Morpheus London commented “the Awards are a fantastic way of designers being able to share new ideas and trends and a great way of being able to express them to their peers.” The Lodge has been designed with elements to suit everyday life. The space is comfortable and welcoming with bespoke features throughout to demonstrate the level of craftmanship that has been used within the property’s development. It is truly a great transition from the outside, with every aspect giving the chalet its own brand identity.

Located in Toronto is where this sleek penthouse kitchen, designed by the interior designer, Sheree Stuart Design can be found. This compact design makes the most of a small space yet is packed with a design that is big on luxury. The modern design fits beautifully with the architecture of the penthouse and the fantastic panoramic views of downtown Toronto. Appointed to the project was the nationally recognised designer, Sheree Stuart. Known for her timeless and elegant interior she was the perfect designer to bring sleek and classic elements to such a personal space. Her aim is to create spaces that inspire its visitors and to make a statement with furnishing that are of the highest quality materials to reflect her client’s personal taste. This impressive transformation has been shortlisted at the International Design and Architecture Awards in the kitchen design over £50,000 category, where the Sheree Stuart Design team will be heading to London in September to celebrate their great achievement. As the kitchen is the heart of the home, it is important that the design reflected the owners personal style. The greatest part of this project was the collaboration with the client who has a keen eye for design. This made this kitchen a showcase of a great collaboration between a client, designer and the trades. The brief advised that the owners would live in this penthouse in Toronto part-time (summers only). They wanted their kitchen to look and feel different from their more traditional kitchen in their Florida bungalow home. A crucial element which 46 design et al
was considered within the design brief was that the owners enjoy cooking and entertaining friends, so creating a highend kitchen with luxury appliances was extremely important. The kitchen blends wood, glass, concrete and steel in a seamless and highly functional design that also includes five integrated Sub-Zero & Wolf appliances. The focal point of the space is a modern island unit with a waterfall edge and under island lighting to highlight the wood millwork. This project is a notable example of how Sheree balances light and texture to create a personal and interesting space. This design was truly a collaborative effort and although there were challenges, magic did happen. New possibilities emerged and took shape, Sheree Stuart Design have utilised all the space available with high-end cabinetry and clever design details, such as high-tech interior cabinet systems. The luxury Sub-Zero & Wolf appliances, including the wine fridge enable the owners to entertain and enjoy their cooking experiences. This kitchen also benefits from an incredible amount of natural light. It was important to everyone that the lighting be equally amazing. This kitchen has lighting above the cabinets to showcase the concrete sloped ceiling lighting under the cabinets. Moreover, the chosen colour scheme for this kitchen, is largely in keeping with Sheree’s signature interiors. Grey and neutral tones are the most prominent colour seen throughout this kitchen, including the flooring and cabinetry. This colour palette allows a sense of calm and

The designers worked with their millwork teams to complete the cabinetry and a metal fabricator for the custom range vent (and large-scale metal fireplace in the living room which is not shown). Any renovation is not without its challenges. The main challenges for this renovation were largely due to the fact that walls were unmovable (most are concrete and load bearing). As such, there were great limitations on the kitchen layout. Sheree Stuart and her team solved this by making the main wall cabinets deeper and taller to accommodate more storage. They also added a pantry system on the north wall and increased the size of the island. High-tech interior cabinet systems were installed for the pantry, garbage/recycling, tray storage, and spices. Moreover, the unique and modern design of this kitchen fits beautifully into the wider environment. The penthouse has 360 views of downtown Toronto, featuring breath-taking views of the CN Tower and lake, perfectly suiting the high-end interior of the kitchen. Overall, this kitchen design at the Toronto Penthouse has utilised a small space yet has reflected luxury expected of a much larger kitchen. Sheree Stuart Design has allowed the space to blend all the elements into each other creating a functional, yet elegance kitchen.

“
As part of an investment property purchase by a professional couple, this charming bijou London apartment was refurbished by Maurizio Pellizzoni for their young daughter, in an upcoming prime spot of Marylebone. The new owners were attracted to the area because it was close to Regents Park and the location is very convenient for public transport connections. The client wanted to have two bedrooms and two bathrooms as this would help to maintain the value of the property and part of the brief was to keep in mind the potential to eventually let out the property or use it for the Airbnb market. Designers, Maurizio Pellizzoni Ltd are currently celebrating their shortlisting at the International Design and Architecture Awards within Interior Design category for UK Living space following their success of this stunning renovation. Prior to the refurbishment the owner’s daughter lived above the flat. They originally chose the location as Marylebone as it’s one of the most up and coming areas in London with close transport links. When Maurizio first met the client, her brief was to create a vibrant, luxurious and modern apartment for the rental market. The owner’s vision was to create the scheme of a Parisienne boutique hotel and Maurizio Pellizzoni set out to achieve a vibrant, elegant, luxurious, and modern apartment. The colour scheme evolved to what became a more feminine apartment using soft pastel colours and a mixture of polished brass and chrome finishes. Using a mixture of colours and textures inspired 54 design et al
by Coachella, Maurizio Pellizzoni used beautiful, high quality materials to create a jewel. The chosen artwork reflects this style. As this was a small split-level apartment, space planning was a key point for the client as the original layout made every room seem very dark and impractical to use. The original entrance hall was very small with a dark corridor, as was the second bathroom, which was mainly constructed under the original staircase. This spiral staircase blocked both light from the hallway and made the upstairs living room an awkward shape and small space. The biggest structural change made was to move the staircase in the flat, to turn it and lay it flat against the back wall, creating an incredible open feel to the whole flat that made the open plan top floor feel endlessly bigger. The flooring used within this apartment is what makes this space special. These beautiful pale wooden floors turned it from feeling ordinary, into a home that has a real luxury feel and is much more spacious and bright. The furnishings are offset with accessories and lighting such as the beautiful lightbulb chandelier hanging over the staircase. It has an industrial feel which perfectly accents the elegance of the pale floors and creates such a beautiful glow in the evenings. Every bit of space has been used which is most obvious in the kitchen where, despite its horseshoe shape, there is no dead space between cupboards. By installing built in wardrobes, the small bedrooms have a decent amount of storage space and the bathrooms, although small,
have everything you could need. The apartment makes you feel like you finally have space in the very cramped lifestyle that is London. In the winter it offers the ultimate cosiness and hygge ambiance, and in the summer, it offers airiness and light to make the most of the good weather. Maurizio Pellizzoni made every square-inch of the apartment beautiful and useful. The kitchen, wardrobes and the new staircase were custom built for the space, which ensured the use of space was fully maximised in a 60m2 space. The biggest structural change we made was to move the staircase in the flat, which at first was a spiral that blocked both light from the hallway and make the upstairs living room an awkward shape. Maurizio had the idea to turn it and lay it flat against the back wall, creating an incredible open feel to the whole flat that made the open plan top floor feel endlessly bigger. When speaking about the awards, Maurizio Pellizzoni commented “all Awards are important to showcase the best in design; the International Design and Architectural Awards is one of the most recognised awards around the word. This level of recognition in the industry is important to any professional, to define their career.” Within this space, Maurizio Pellizzoni have created the vibrant, modern apartment that the owner’s required. The selected furniture and artworks reflect the feminine approach, the soft pastel colours and elegant statement pieces create the perfect ladies apartment, appropriate for a luxurious Airbnb stay.

The Library Living Room is elegantly situated in São Paulo, Brazil. This project involved the redesign of a living room and library area. This area although primarily used for reading and working was also intended for entertaining guests and relaxation. The focus for the appointed designers, Rosa May Sampaio was to create an atmosphere conducive to listening to music and relaxing for both the clients and the guests.

greatest inspirations come from nature. Rosa’s work is indeed, very intuitive and with the experience of living in a variety of countries, creating homes is part of Rosa’s nature.
The project has an eclectic style and manages to, harmoniously, mix different styles of furniture and decorative items of varying periods. Special attention should be paid to the architect’s table of the XVI century, the Italian darkened bronze Sputnik illumination from the 1970’s, the Italian worktable from the 1940’s, Murano glass lamps from the 1970’s and the arm chairs by Joaquin Tenreiro, a Brazilian designer from the 1940’s. Rosa May Sampaio, with over 20 years of interior design experience, has created a living room and library area that not only is comfortable, but is beautifully designed and homes a fantastic space to read, work and relax. Upon entering The Library Living Room, the living area interiors lights up the dark colours used for the floor and the bookcase which were intended to give profundity to the living room. Crude painted walls, and an antique armchair coated with green leather add to the elegant feeling of the space. The inspiration and the concept for this project was to create a space that would draw people with varying points of interest, thus enabling harmonious interaction in the home. Rosa May Sampaio’s favourite aspect of the project are the colours that were incorporated into the design which, when combined, evoke a harmonious atmosphere for the clients.

The Library Living Room is a marriage of both class and comfort. Rosa May Sampaio incorporated many different works of art to complement the relaxing feel of the spaces, this includes watercolours by Cicero Dias, a Brazilian 62 design et al
famous painter, photographs of Mario Cravo Neto, Cassio Vasconcellos and American Peter Beard (Karen Blixen’s home of the film Out of Africa). There is the use of natural hand-made fibres in the carpet for sustainability and the black vinylic wood in the floor. Moreover, the sofa, armchair and curtains are made of raw crude linen fabrics with cushions in shades of green by Larsen. These light tones reflect the natural light that beautifully flows directly in front of the sofa, creating the perfect reading spot with a view. The warm tones and natural lighting falls on the sofa to the bookshelf. The bookshelf itself homes a wonderful ladder, allowing the owner to reach each shelf conformably. The grand light situated above the coffee table shines light to every corner of the living room. Moving forward, there are strips of lighting above the bookshelf, not taking away from the main light in the living area but adding to the atmosphere throughout. A key feature of The Library Living Room are the colours and the harmonious atmosphere. The library and living room both home a personal touch. This is clear through the use of framed photographs and many books. Amongst the books is a drawing and beautifully situated flowers, adding to the warm and inviting environment. design et al are delighted to announce that Rosa May Sampaio has been shortlisted for the Living Space Interior Design Global award in The International Design and Architecture Awards. Rosa May Sampaio has participated in The International Design and Architecture Awards since 2014. Rosa May Sampaio’s greatest inspirations come from nature. Rosa’s work is indeed, very intuitive and with the experience of living in a variety of countries, creating homes is part of Rosa’s nature. Rosa’s designs are characterised by cosy atmospheres, harmony, sophisticated finishes decorative objects.

The Bachelorette Pad is a Singapore based apartment, home to a professional single lady of Chinese heritage. This apartment development was set out to provide the owner with a lavish home which was entirely personalised to her alone.
“It was to be a home
that was a retreat away from the outside world that resonated with a serene glamour, a sense of feminine romance and a nod to her Chinese heritage.
The client appointed Design Intervention with the development of this apartment. The Singapore based interior design company has developed an international reputation for attention to detail and creativity. Their mission is to celebrate the personalities of their clients, by telling the story of the client through visual language, looking at the use of colour, space and form. They are also known for their blend of old and new, contemporary and classic, as well as creating daring concepts with the aim of pushing the boundaries. All elements of which are highly reflected with the design of the Bachelorette Pad. Moreover, Design Intervention have been shortlisted at The Design and Architecture Awards for the City Space award following the accomplishment of this development. The brief given to the designers required a space that reflected the owner’s life and what she loves. It was to be a home that was a retreat away from the outside world that resonated with a serene glamour, a sense of feminine romance and a nod to her Chinese heritage. There was no requirement for any entertaining space, as this home was to be an indulgence for one. The client’s brief was for the entire apartment to function as a seamless master suite with a consistent design theme and feel throughout. Design Intervention were tasked with the selection of all household accessories from tea cups to bed sheets and bath towels so that every element of this home has been meticulously considered to ensure a totally cohesive flow.

Design Intervention’s favourite aspect of this project is the master bathroom, this space is the ultimate in feminine indulgence; a place to feel pampered and spoilt. The bespoke bathtub, vanity and shower benches were formed out of thermally moulded solid surface to give it a totally unique bathing experience. Located a few steps away from the master bathroom is the master bedroom. Here, the room’s feature wall poses an elegant 70 design et al
wall paper of a nature inspired theme, a subtle nod to the Chinese inspired concept. The gold leaf chandeliers on either side of the bed in keep with the wallpaper but also provide further luxury to the room. Furthermore, the colour scheme of varied lush pinks within this room reflect the feminine requirement in a subtle and elegant way. Design Intervention believe that design works so well because they have managed to create a seamless aesthetic flow between the various functional zones within the home whilst simultaneously integrating the practical requirements and maximising the available area. This home has been designed to be the ultimate retreat from frenetic city life: a haven to restore and rejuvenate. Within the living room area, the colour palette mainly consists of lavish slivers and golds, with subtle hints of pinks within the flowers and small accessories. A feature piece in the living room is an elegant draping chandelier which has an inspired tree like feel. The branches appear to grow from the centre with a hanging, tapering piece of ice on each branch, forming the glowing lights. In addition to the impressive chandelier is the use of natural light within the space. Large floor to ceiling glass doors are used, opening onto a personal balcony. Not only does this allow natural light into the room but further provides the owner with premium views of her surroundings. When speaking about the Awards, Nikki Hunt, Design Principle at Design Intervention stated “the Design Awards play a critical role in raising industry standards. They inspire design professionals to strive for new, fresh ideas and higher standards of workmanship. Celebrating excellence motivates and drives the competitive spirit in us all resulting in the pursuit of excellence and ever higher standards. Design Intervention is both humbled and excited to be part of this shortlisted selection.” The Bachelorette is the ultimate ladies experience. Throughout the apartment there is a definite sense of indulgence and a great escape of the busy Singapore city lifestyle, this apartment will provide the owner with a place where she can truly feel at home.

“The designers favourite aspect of this project was the
successful integration of traditional Japanese building and contemporary design in eclectic design approach.
“
The Atami Kasgacho property was a renovation project of an 80-year old building located in Japan. After 5 years of abandonment and on the verge of demolition, the building was rescued. There were many areas that had to be restored due to damage, including the building’s original features. These features contained unique and highly skilled craftsmanship, which were difficult to repeat with current techniques, and therefore it was crucial to the designers that these were restored. There were three elements to this project: complete restoration to original features, reconfiguration and remodelling by using original material, and total renovation for creating a large LDK space, which includes the most damaged area of the house. Interior designers Babid, were tasked with this challenge. Since their impressive renovation of this building, Babid have been shortlisted for the Interior Design – Living Space Award, at the International Design and Architecture Awards 2018. When speaking about the Awards with the Director of the company, Noriko Sawayama, she advised that they were important as the International Design and Architecture Awards are “one of the most prestigious Awards.” The brief given to the design team for this property was to create a fusion of East and West. This meant that the space layout and balance was Western and was accompanied with Japanese traditional materials and craftmanship, introduced for authenticity. This can be seen within the Tatami floor matt, Washi wallpaper, 80 design et al
and traditional seaweed plasterworks. The designers favourite aspect of this project was the successful integration of traditional Japanese building and contemporary design in eclectic design approach. The designer was able to salvage the abandoned 80-year-old house with many original features which can no longer be replicated with current techniques. The theme of the eclectic and fusion design scheme came from the designer’s cultural background having lived in both Western and Eastern cultures. Her deep knowledge of the cultures led the success of a unique integration of East-West culture on this project. The colour scheme used by the designers are of contrasting types. On entering the living space, bold and striking yellow walls surround the calm and neutral feature wall, which consists of a brown panelled wallpaper with Japanese trees growing from either end of the sofa. A subtle nod to the cultured inspired introduction. Additionally, the furniture is of neutral colours which allow the space to be a calming and relaxed atmosphere. Dark woods of the cabinetry, and blackness of the sofa and table highlight the contemporary feel within this house, without being too modest. Above are the soaring ceilings which demonstrate how old the building is. Here, the designers have exposed the original beam-works, which have been treated and washed with traditional method to create an elegant surface. By doing
this the designers have highlighted the contemporary, yet long-standing history of the building. Within the space the designers have made further use of the features already accompanied by the original building, by making the most of its surroundings. The views from the property are stunning, and this has been taken advantage of as large glass windows dominate one side of the living room area, allowing natural light to fill the room as well as allowing the owners to fully appreciate the views. A notable feature in the space is the dominating fire place, which sits in the middle of the room within a large rectangular shaped frame. This piece is unique, and further enhances the boldness of the design direction. Artwork was also an important feature that the designers included within the living space. Here the owner will find two white and blue striking abstract pieces of art, hung above the modern units. This adds contrast to the Japanese artworks also located within the space. The living room space within the Atami Kasgacho property has a sustainable aspect which was important for the designer. The renovation of the old building into a modern sleek space has truly brought to life the combination of Western and East.

The specific target market for The Birchwood was very clear to the Fusion team from the outset. After various successful award-winning developments in the North London area over the past ten years, Fusion Residential were keen to spread their wings and secure another site to replicate the success enjoyed on previous projects. This time however they looked upon West London. Notorious for being high in value with areas such as Chiswick, Ealing and Kew, Fusion Residential identified that the market would react well to the Fusion brand and the unique Fusion product. With the introduction of Crossrail into the area, they also felt that the timing was right for Fusion to break into this part of the Capital.

apartment has been designed to offer generous room proportions, high ceilings, maximum daylight, plenty of storage space, great views, and to provide a general sense of spaciousness.
Following the success of The Birchwood, Fusion Residential are currently celebrating their shortlisting at the International Design and Architecture Awards. The designer’s brief included the search for the appropriate location, which was largely driven by the set target audience that they wanted to cater for. Ealing is characterised predominantly by large expensive detached family houses on very substantial plots. Most of these houses have 5 or more bedrooms, are in excess of 4000 square feet and are incredibly expensive to run due to the great amount of upkeep and general maintenance that they require. The owners are generally very successful high net worth individuals who are used to the finest things in life. Although they may want to downsize, they do not want to downgrade. They do not want to compromise on the luxury that they have been used to for so many years. This therefore informed the design brief and Fusion Residential’s requirements that the scheme had to fulfil.

The Birchwood is a development of 6 bespoke apartments. Although the idea behind The Birchwood was a target market with the intention of downsizing, these apartments still provided the owners with plenty of space. The Birchwood provides 4 apartments at over 1750 square feet, 1 garden apartment at over 2500 square feet and 1 penthouse at just under 2450 square feet. In addition, the apartments were designed to include a spacious master bedroom with a dedicated dressing area and en-suite bathroom and then a decent size second bedroom also with an en-suite bathroom to cater for guests, family members and grandchildren. 88 design et al
The residents at The Birchwood will benefit from apartments that run front to back within the building and are, therefore, triple aspect residences offering different views from the various rooms and maximum amount of daylight. The intentionally high floor to ceiling heights also help to create a sense of spaciousness. Some brief features to highlight are: comfort cooling to all principal rooms; under floor heating; mood lighting with wall mounted control; integrated ceiling speakers; Miele appliances; sanitary ware by C.P. Hart; automatic irrigation systems for garden apartments; gated underground parking for two cars with heated ramp; video entry phone systems, concierge service and private cold store for grocery deliveries. Internally the apartment has been designed to offer generous room proportions, high ceilings, maximum daylight, plenty of storage space, great views, and to provide a general sense of spaciousness. Outside the large houses, are the equally large gardens. Following their target market research, the owners of the properties would not want to spend a huge amount of time, effort or money on the upkeep of a garden. 5 of the 6 apartments provide a private terrace, with the garden apartment featuring its own private landscaped west facing courtyard garden which is accessed via the master bedroom suite the study, the living room/kitchen and also the guest bedroom suite. Following their shortlisting, Mark Caylor, Creative Director at Fusion Residential stated, “we are always aiming to showcase our work and the Fusion brand feels that the International Design and Architecture Awards are a respected, creative and well recognised body to do this to best effect. It’s important to us to be by the honoured by only the best.” The Birchwood apartments will offer its owner the desired spaciousness, as the spaces have been designed with soaring ceilings and lots of natural lighting. The outdoor spaces provide a magnificent first impression, as quality and luxury have been demonstrated from the outset. Moreover, Fusion Residential have provided each apartment with high quality finishes, as well as warm and inviting entraining areas.

“The brief for this project was to make the impossible possible and to design all the furniture in marble or granite within this luxurious penthouse.
“
Located in Germany, Hans Gabele and Luis Design have designed a modern and bright penthouse with the developer, Bauunternehmen Martin. The home is a 300 square foot penthouse, which took approximately two years to complete. The Stone Penthouse was an exclusive design and customisation by the German firm, Luis Design. The Penthouse is a 10-room space, complete with 3 bathrooms, 3 bedrooms and 2 kitchens, where Luis Design have furnished with one of a kind materials. The brief for this project was to make the impossible possible and to design all the furniture in marble or granite within this luxurious penthouse. Luis Design specialise with working with marble and granite. They believe that these materials have been used as architectural status symbols for millennia and that they still have a place in today’s design and architecture. The team of designers and engineers were commissioned to create a complete set of furnishings from either granite or marble, this included kitchen fixtures, couches, sideboards, cabinets and sinks. In this project, Luis Design have maintained a monochromatic design scheme, which exudes the feeling of being in a luxury hotel in a much warmer country. Following the success of this impressive penthouse, Luis Design have been celebrating their shortlisting at the Design and Architecture Awards within numerous categories. From the outset the Stone Penthouse was designed with the aim to be a completely 96 design et al
unique residence. On entering the stylish Stone Penthouse, it’s evident that Luis Design have created a modern haven. Throughout, the designers have used materials that are indeed, architectural status symbols for millennia. Marble and granite have been used within the property, creating a unique environment, perfect for any occasion. All the furniture in the Stone Penthouse is made of granite or marble. This includes the kitchen fixtures, couches, sideboards, beds, cabinets and sinks. Thanks to a system Luis Design have developed in-house, their customers have the option to combine each piece of furniture, each made of granite or marble with semiprecious stones, metal, wood, glass, leather and fabric based on their own personal preferences. Thanks to the infinite possibilities of combining materials, their clients receive unique pieces that are completely tailormade on their exclusive input. The monochrome theme throughout the penthouse lends itself to a contemporary aesthetic. This does not end when leaving the indoors. On entering the Stone Penthouse’s terrace, one is faced with a grand pool and plenty of space to relax on a sofa or hammock. The theme remains contemporary and clean in design. To allow a seamless transition from the pool area, back into the home are contemporary glass, sliding doors. Within the living room area there are glass windows which surround the space, allowing natural light to fill the room, as well as highlighting the beautiful
environment the property sits in. In addition to the open seating area is the home’s kitchen, which in keeps with the running theme. The black island unit is a predominate feature in this area with an impressive lighting feature above. The bathroom poses the same colour scheme and design. It also boasts two unusual art pieces on either side of the bathtub. On the opposing side features a striking red coloured art work to contrast with the running theme. This demonstrates a unique concept, as well as adding exciting elements into the room. On entering the master bedroom, the contrast between the black and crisp white asserts a modern ambiance. There are tall impressive stands holding a candle on either side of the master bed, these reflect beautifully on the clean white carpet. The art work above the bed mirrors the pattern from the bedsheets, allowing a seamless transition throughout the room. When discussing client’s reaction to the Stone Penthouse with Luis, he stated that the clients thought of the project as “perfect”. This project, which is a 300 square foot penthouse, took around 2 years to complete due to the exclusive design and customisation of the furniture by Luis Design. Obviously, the key aspect for this project was the luxury marble and granite furniture, the designers believe that the whole property works so well because is it unique, contemporary, and not something you would find most designers doing.
