COUNTER COMPARISON Follow Denver Style Magazine, Beauty Contributor, mom, and HookedonBeauty.com Editor, Carissa Passerella, for an inside comparison of over-the-counter remedies that claim quick results Vs. treatments that should definitely be done by a professional.

While summer slowly comes to an end, I start to welcome all things fall like boots, flannels, pumpkin spice everything, and of course some new skincare tricks to renew my skin from 3 months spent mostly outdoors. I don’t know about you, but around mid September my skin starts to become dull and lifeless with specks of discoloration that I’ll lovingly refer to as freckles fully knowing that a cute moniker doesn’t disguise the fact that it’s actually sun damage. The good news is that there are solid solutions to get back to a glowing, more radiant, clearer complexion whether you prefer an at-home treatment, or if you’re in the mood for a spa experience starting at just $30.

PEELS A peel is a great way to renew your skin and chase away dullness to reveal brighter, smoother skin. It’s the perfect end of summer treatment that gives noticeable results.

OTC For a deep at-home treatment, local brand Sanitas Skincare uses vitamin A to deeply exfoliate the skin bringing new, fresh skin the surface. It’s so powerful they advise using it just every few weeks and it will cause some flaking and redness- both hallmarks of the process. Look for fresher looking skin and a smoother texture after just a few uses. Retinol Peeling Cream, $80; Sanitas Skincare

SPA

Bre Morris, the owner of Alchemy Face Bar in Boulder and Denver freshened my skin up with a Blackberry Detox Peel which she mixed with enzymes for some added benefits. A combination of Blueberry, Raspberry, Blackberry, and Pineapple juices along with lactic acids got to work giving my skin giving a slight tingle so I could feel it working. After my face was slightly red and lightly flaked a few days later. Overall I could see a measurable difference in brightness and some of my scaring had lightened up as well. Blackberry Detox Peel, $60; Alchemy Face Bar

MICRONEEDLING With several companies now offering hand-held devices, micro-needling is more popular than ever. Poking micro-channels using ultra fine needles creates a wound that your body than heals by creating new skin. This response stimulates collagen, fades scaring, and lessens discoloration from the sun.

This at-home roller is great for a rolling rookie who might be intimidated to get started. It features .25mm needles which are minimally invasive meaning you won’t get bleeding, but you’ll still create the tiny channels needed to get the overall effect. You can even use it nightly (before serums to get better penetration), and in just a few weeks you’ll start to see an overall better skin quality, lessening of lines, and brightening of pigment. It’s an easy step to add to your existing routine and it works, but consistency is key. Stacked Micro Roller, $30; Aillea.
