e has to have Gummi Bears, even on board ship. After all the man is a well known brand ambassador, and whatever he touches turns, in some degree, to gold. This is true, above all, of Germany’s most successful television programme ‘Wetten, dass…?’, which the entertainment tsar Thomas Gottschalk presented for a total of 23 years. Several times, too, from the Island – the last time in the summer of 2011. And once again it was all about the holiday island of Mallorca. German TV audiences know it like the back of

their hands, and thanks to Gottschalk they feel at home in Palma’s bull ring, where the programme was recorded. Now the upmarket brand Rolls-Royce has engaged the TV guru as its brand ambassador in Mallorca. At the end of October, Gottschalk spent several days on the Island admiring the smart vehicles of the British luxury brand. He also set out from Palma marina for a sailing trip on board an 18-metre yacht, accompanied by ten other guests. The entertainer, a RollsRoyce connoisseur and driver himself, came once again without his wife Thea, who has never been to Mallorca. Instead he bumped into the previous James Bond, actor Pierce Brosnan, who was in Mallorca filming a new movie and who was also staying at the Dorint Hotel in Camp de Mar. Was this the start of a whole new sailing career for the anchorman from Germany? Gottschalk was heard to say that he would rather stick to his small motoryacht. Following the somewhat rough sailing trip, the 63-yearold, looking as relaxed as usual, spent an evening enjoying delicious tapas at a finca with Michael Gleißner (Rolls-Royce Cologne) and 30 other guests. Gleißner had the new

Rolls-Royce Phantom Coupé transported straight to the Island from the Paris Motor Show. The next day Gottschalk assisted at the Players’ Night of the four-day Mallorca Golf Week. “I enjoy my life inside the tabloids and the features section,” says the TV man. The Frankfurter Allgemeine on Sunday has finally secured him to write a column for them called ‘Ask Gottschalk’. A press release from the famous newspaper says that Gottschalk has basically always been a features writer, a member of the educated classes, one who bears witness to the vitality of what we understand as art. The format will follow that of the column written by Marcel Reich-Ranicki, ideas man and literary critic. Readers can write to the entertainer via email (gottschalkfragen@faz.de) and ask him the questions they have always wanted to, not least on the subject of television. There are certain to be questions about ‘Wetten, dass…?’ and the legendary shows filmed in Mallorca. Cm
