Solar matters eclipse most else on The Weather Channel for one day Among ways to watch the total solar eclipse, The Weather Channel expectedly will be one of them, and in a very big way. Holding to its slogan of “It’s amazing out there,” that outlet expectedly will be among networks giving time to one of nature’s most amazing phenomena Monday, Aug. 21, with much of its programming and resources devoted to the event that will occur for the first time in 99 years. The channel partially will rely on “augmented reality,” a visual technique that will make anchors and reporters appear as if they’re right in the middle of the eclipse. Nora Zimmett, senior vice president of programming for The Weather Channel, notes that eclipse coverage has been going for a while with NASA astrophysicists and other guests discussing “why, after almost a century, this is such a big deal. We are also warning and guiding people in how it’s best to watch the eclipse; we’ve partnered with Dish Network to be able to offer glasses on that front. And we’re also talking about where the best places are going to be to watch the eclipse.” Once the eclipse is over, The Weather Channel’s “Weather Underground” will offer what lively

co-host Alex Wilson terms an “afterparty.” Immediately copping to being “a weather nerd,” reveals Wilson, who will spend the day stationed in Jackson Hole, Wyo. (with colleague Chris Bruin). She’s pleased that via her channel’s plans, which include segments from a cruise ship, “I’ll be able to see this from all the vantage points, with our people staggered across the path.” Wilson allows that “we’ve always been able to be a little nerdier” on the weeknight “Weather Underground,” citing such features as “our ‘Video Six-Pack,’ the top six videos of the day. We’re also recapping the day that occurred while breaking down the science of it, so I think that in a way, the timing will set us up in a really nice position.”
