SOUTHAVEN — Funeral services for John Art Hale, 70, are set for 2 p.m. Sunday at Magnolia Funeral Home Chapel of Memories with burial at Holly Cemetery. Mr. Hale died Thursday, Oct. 18, 2012, at Baptist Desoto Memorial Hospital. Born Oct. 10, 1942, he was the manager of many garment factories, which included Corinth Manufacturing for 15 years, Corinth Uniforms for five years, All-Wear Manufacturing, Wrangler, ALFS Manufacturing in Arkansas and Kadey Manufacturing in Memphis, Tenn., until his retirement. He was of the Baptist faith. Mr. Hale loved his family and friends and enjoyed golfing, going to Ole Miss football games, watching the Steelers on television, riding his Harley and most of all, cooking for his family and friends and spending time with them. He was preceded in death by his father, Edward Hinkle Hale; his mother, Maydell Davis Hale; two brothers, Leon Hale and Frank Hale; and two sisters, Louise Sisk and Mildred Jean Faulkner. Survivors include his wife, Bonnie Hale of Southaven; a son, Gregory John Hale and wife Melissa of Oxford; two daughters, Kathy Hale Shaffer of Southaven, and Kristy Hale Bumpas and husband Anthony of Corinth; a step-son, David Griffin and wife Heather of Malvern, Ark.; eight grandchildren, Blake Hale, Reid Hale, Annalauren Hale, Colby Hale, Blaine Geer, Gina Kate Bumpas, Bella Grace Bumpas and Shane L. Griffin; a sister, Dora Mae Whirley of Corinth; his ex-wife and mother of his children, Sue Hale of Corinth; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends. Bro. Gary Watkins will officiate. Visitation is today from 5 until 9 p.m. and Sunday from 1 p.m. until service time. Everything will be at the funeral home. Ben Atchley Veterans Home. Roy was born in Burnsville to Golburn Roy and Alma King Whitaker on May 9, 1926. He moved to East Tennessee with his family in the 1950’s. Roy served in World War II in Germany. He retired from ORNL as an Industrial Hygiene Technician. He was also retired from the Tennessee National Guard. He was preceded in death by his parents; his niece, Marsha DePreist; his sisters, Brenda Greer Havard and Nella Ruth Sparks; and brother, Bobby Greer. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, June; daughter, Cherry (Alan) Zimmerman, of Knoxville, Tenn.; a son, Danny (Janice) Whitaker, of Powell, Tenn.; his grandchildren, Zach (Angela) Whitaker, of Clarksville, Tenn., Jessica (Sean) Wilder, of Nolensville, Tenn.; his step-grandchildren, Sam Zimmerman, of Reston, Va., Megan (Christian) Cole, of Sterling, Va., and Dan Zimmerman, of Sterling, Va.; his great-grandchildren, Cooper and Lilly Whitaker; his step-great-grandchildren, Caroline and Claire Cole; his brothers, Ronnie (Betty) Greer, of Greenville, Ala.; his brothers-in-law, John Surratt, of Counce, Tenn., and Lee Surratt (Valerie) Surratt, of Yuma, Ariz.; his nieces, Rhonda (Milan) McGill, of Birmingham, Ala., and Monica (Alan) Grams, of Houston, Texas; his nephews, Ben Sparks (Patty), of Nashville, Tenn., Bobby Greer, Jr., of Mobile, Ala., Craig (Debbie) Greer, of Mobile, Ala.; and several great nephews and nieces. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to HonorAir Knoxville, 7536 Taggart Lane, Knoxville, TN 37938 or Beaver Ridge United Methodist Church, 7753 Oak Ridge Hwy, Knoxville, TN 37931. The family will receive friends on Sunday from 5 until 7 p.m. at the Holley-Gamble Funeral Home.` Family and friends will meet Monday at 11 a.m. at Woodhaven Memorial Gardens in Claxton for graveside services with Rev. Wreaths Across America The American Legion is sponsoring its annual “Wreaths Across America Sponsorship.” Legion members will be set up at Gardner’s supermarket today from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. A wreath for a veteran’s grave may be picked up. There are 7,543 graves in the Corinth National Cemetery and the goal is to have one for each grave. Haunted house Booger Bottom Haunted House at the Rienzi Volunteer Fire Department is open every Friday and Saturday night in October from 7-11 p.m. Admission is $5.
Mullins fundraiser A fundraiser to help with medical expenses for Douglas Mullins is being held today at 2 p.m. at the L.C. Follin Christian Life Center, CR 604 and Hwy. 2 W. in Kossuth. There will be food, an auction, a cake walk and music. A drawing for tickets are being sold for a gun, king quilt, gallons of gas and more.

Archaeological show The Magnolia State Archaeological Society is presenting a Native American Artifact Show set for 8 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. today at the Crossroads Arena. A wide variety of prehistoric artifacts will be displayed. The public will get to see a vast collection of Native American artifacts collected from the state as well as Tennessee and Alabama during the free event.
Festival held The 2012 Glendale Elementary Fall Festival is being held today from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. A yard sale begins at 7 a.m. There will be inflatables, games with prizes, live music, cotton candy and lots of other foods, and a dunking booth. There will also be a talent contest for students from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. Arm bands will be sold for $10 each which gives child unlimited access to the inflatables and most of the games. Bring a lawn chair.
BBQ political rally A BBQ-Political Rally sponsored by the Alcorn County Democratic Executive Committee is being tonight from 5-7 p.m. at the American Legion Building. Everyone can come out and enjoy a free barbecue dinner and hear Brad Morris, candidate for Mississippi U.S.

Fall foliage The Alcorn County Welcome Center is your information source for Mississippi outdoor recreation, events and activities this fall. The Tishomingo Fall Foliage tour and the historic downtown streets of Corinth offer the splendor of fall color right here in your own backyard. Come by and watch the Tishomingo County Fall Foliage DVD and pick up a map and listing of streets for the tour. If hunting and fishing is your gig, come by and pick up a copy of the 2012-2013 Mississippi Outdoor Digest. Pumpkins on Main The front lawn at First Baptist Church in Corinth has been turned into a pumpkin patch through Oct. 31. Hundreds of pumpkins are unloaded and placed on the lawn for members of the community to purchase. All proceeds from the event go to the Oasis Medical Center (formerly the Resource Center for Women). The pumpkin patch also provides a perfect place for families to take fall pictures. Colorful photo opportunities are available. The First Baptist pumpkin patch will be open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. through Wednesday, Oct. 31. For more information, call the church office at 286-2208.
