As she suspected, nobody noticed when Katie Van Liew brought home a lifesize concrete gnome recently. Such is the life of a collector, especially one who’s been hunting and gathering since she was a little girl.

“Rocks, shark teeth, stickers, and Hello Kitty were my first organized collections,” she says, “but my pockets were always full of something I found.” These days, her eye is still gravitating toward things that bring her joy, albeit vintage— tablecloths (her collection numbers in the hundreds), paper, pottery, children’s books, shell art, and anything Christmas-themed (as she puts it, “I’ve never met a vintage Santa I didn’t love”).

“I also love anything pastel from the 1950s and ’60s,” Van Liew says.
