Soul In Exile
THE NESHAMA IS SUPERFLUOUS
A certain bachur in the yeshiva in Kfar Chabad was very far from ‘kabbolas ol’ and did whatever he pleased. At one of the farbrengens, the mashpia, R’ Shlomo Chaim Kesselman spoke to him from the depths of his heart about how he doesn’t have any need for the G-dly soul and for him it was absolutely superfluous.
He said to him, “Tell G-d: ‘Master of the universe, take my neshama, I don’t need it...’” As he said this, the mashpia burst into tears.

SADNESS FROM THE BODY AND JOY FROM THE SOUL
In yechidus after the Yomim Tovim, the Rebbe said to the mashpia, R’ Reuven Dunin, “From Simchas Torah, one needs to take simcha for the entire year, and now, not even a week has passed since Simchas Torah and already… You need to learn from me!”
R’ Reuven said, “I saw the Rebbe cry.”
The Rebbe explained, “It’s not a contradiction. The crying is because we are in exile, and every day is ‘joy on one side of the heart and tears on the other side of the heart.’ But the actual practice needs to be joyous.”
The Rebbe took out a Tanya and opened it to chapter 31 and pointed to the lines, “This, then, should be one’s lifelong aim in the service of G-d with great joy.” The Rebbe emphasized that the sadness due to distance is because of the body and the animating
soul, and he pointed at the lines further in the chapter, “...and also the joy of the soul...” and connected this to inyanim that speak about joy at the end of chapter 33.

EATING WHAT ONE IS GIVEN
The Rebbe once said in yechidus to the mashpia, R’ Nissan Nemenov, “Today, iskafia is when a bachur eats what he is given in the yeshiva kitchen.”

SOUL IN EXILE
The mashpia, R’ Shmuel Levitin, was drafted when he was twenty. When he was taken to the army, he took along the sefer Imrei Binah, assuming that there he would need deep Chassidus [to pass the down time], but he was assigned to the artillery corps with horses and this did not allow him to learn and think.
His father, upon instruction from the Rebbe Rashab, went to the city of Lomza, near the border with Germany, in order to be near his son. When his son was released, he said to his father from the depths of his soul, “Even thinking a thought was impossible.”
When his father went to Lubavitch, he told the Rebbe what his son said. On Shabbos, the Rebbe said a maamar Chassidus and in the middle of the maamar he said, “When a soul is in exile, it’s not given the opportunity to even think about G-dliness.”

Recipe of the week
Chanukah Sheet Pan Donuts

INGREDIENTS
2/3 cup sugar
3/4 cup carbonated water, warmed
1 tablespoon Gefen Yeast
1/2 cup warm milk
10 tablespoons melted butter, divided
1 tablespoon Gefen
Vanilla Extract
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 egg
3 and 1/2 to 4 cups Mishpacha Flour
PREPARATION
1. Combine sugar, warmed carbonated water and yeast. Allow to stand until it bubbles.
2. In the meantime, combine milk, six tablespoons melted butter, vanilla, salt and egg. Whisk to incorporate.
3. Combine yeast mixture with milk mixture. Slowly add flour until dough has formed, kneading for about 10 minutes.
4. Allow to rise until it doubles in size (if in doubt, let it rise longer).
5. Spread two tablespoons melted butter on a baking sheet. Top with dough and spread, using your hands, on baking sheet.
6. Allow to rise, covered, for about 30 to 60 minutes.
7. Preheat oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit.
8. Top dough with remaining two tablespoons melted butter.
9. Once oven is hot, bake donut for about 20 minutes.
10. Top with confectioners’ sugar and whatever toppings you’d like. You can even set up a variety of toppings so everyone can add their favorites.
