The Ripple Effect!
ike many of you, we’re wrapping up graduation season here in the Midwest. You might have had kids advance from preschool, kindergarten, middle school on to the next step in their education. You yourself may have just graduated from college or technical school and are setting sail out into the world – congratulations! Revel in the new, crisp diplomas; celebrate at the graduation parties!
In my house, we had a big milestone as my son, Sean, graduated from high school. Hooray!! The past year has been a strange one for the Class of 2021, but it was wonderful to have a ‘normal’ inperson graduation ceremony in the high school gym on a Friday night in our town. It was so nice to see all the young adults in Sean’s class – most of whom I’ve known since their kindergarten year – celebrate crossing this finish line together. As is typical of these ceremonies, there were several speakers – both teachers and graduating students – and in addition to the jokes and the memories, we heard a fair share of inspiring anecdotes. One, in particular, struck me as valid to us all, not just graduating seniors. You quite likely have heard this one yourself, or have seen it on Facebook or Instagram – it’s adapted from a short piece called The Star Thrower by Loren Eiseley: One day a man was walking along the beach, when he noticed a boy repeatedly picking up and gently throwing things into the ocean. Approaching the boy, he asked, “Young man, what are you doing?” The boy replied, “Throwing starfish back into the ocean. The surf is up and the tide is going out. If I don’t throw them back, they’ll die.” The man laughed to himself and said, “Don’t you realize there are miles and miles of beach and thousands of starfish? You can’t make any difference!”
After listening politely, the boy bent down, picked up another starfish, and threw it into the ocean. Then, he turned and smiled at the man, and said, “I made a difference to that one.” What a fabulous message to our graduating seniors! There are a lot of things to fix in our world right now, and it can seem overwhelming when you watch the news, read the paper or scan the updates on your phone. And yet, the cumulative effect of individual people each doing small but substantive actions can change the world for the better! I was thinking about this as we prepared the article for this issue about the first annual Southwest Dairy Clinic held earlier in June in New Mexico. A few motivated adults organized a one-day showing and fitting clinic in an area of the country that was so hungry for this knowledge – 41 kids showed up with their heifers that day! Maybe 41 isn’t a huge number on a national scale, but just like that boy and that starfish on the beach, imagine the difference this event made to those participants. How many of those kids had a passion sparked that day? How many will be thrilled with their success at their own fairs as they apply what they learned from the clinic? I guarantee they’ll be back for more next year!
And to those of us that have seen a few years (or decades!) since our own graduations, please read the passage again. At this point in our life, are we acting more like the boy or the man? It’s easy to get jaded and feel like you can’t make a difference. The years have a way of knocking you down a few times when you make an extra effort, but please don’t let that stop you from trying! Do the little bit extra to support your local breed organization, a local sale, to help a kid at the fair, or give some much-needed advice to someone just getting started in the purebred dairy cattle business. That small gesture or added effort is like throwing that rock into the pond – the ripple effect moves on and on throughout our shared community and makes it better for everyone! So here’s to all the kids that powered through the 2020-2021 school year, no matter what level. And here’s to the parents, families, teachers, coaches, and mentors that helped them through it! We did it! Never, never doubt that your small actions are making a difference to those around you! Have a fabulous summer – we’ll see you at ringside!

EASTRIVER GOLDWYN DEB 176
A Family Full of Success W
hen the Holstein Association USA announced their 2020 Star of the Breed - Eastriver Goldwyn Deb 176 - it provided a timely opportunity to take a look at one of the most successful, consistent matings seen in North America over the past decade. We all know specific cow and bull matings that are a ‘nick’, but you’d be hard pressed to find one more dependable than using Goldwyn on Homestead Astronomical Deb EX-95-3E-CAN 12*. Born in September 2004, Astronomical Deb was bred in the Nova Scotia Master Breeder herd of the Logan Brothers and carried their Homestead prefix. In fact, she was the eighth generation Homestead-bred out of a VG Jed Approval, then a VG-87 4* Skychief. Behind that, classic Canadian sires such as Hanoverhill Lincoln, Downalane Reflector Emperor, and Seiling Rockman are scattered throughout her pedigree. Like many Astronomicals, she was a fancy, strapping heifer and won the Senior Calf class at the 2005 Atlantic Summer Show en route to HM All-Atlantic 4-H Senior Calf honors at the year end. As a
yearling, she was purchased as part of a package of five heifers by Bruce Wood of Marshfield, PEI to add to his Eastriver herd, where she freshened as a 2-yearold in February 2007. Unlike many Astronomicals, she calved in with a really nice udder and scored Very Good with a VG-MS in her first lactation. “She was a really good young cow, if a touch old-fashioned,” remembers Bruce Wood. “She didn’t work real hard in that first lactation. We were just entering the Goldwyn era, and I thought that would be a good flush mating on her to give her a little more milkiness. She had the width and substance of bone for Goldwyn, and when those first calves hit the ground in 2009, we thought they were special.” In fact, the group of five Goldwyn heifers from Deb born the first week of September 2009 should go down in Holstein history as one of the most successful single flushes of all time! Eastriver Gold Deb 848 scored EX-932E and made almost 170,000 lbs of milk lifetime for Extondale Farms in PEI; Eastriver Gold Deb 866 went EX-92-4E 1* for Windyoaks Holsteins and Valleyside
Holsteins in Nova Scotia and left four Very Good daughters; Eastriver Gold Deb 861 went EX-90 3* at Ferme Maida in Quebec where she has been flushed extensively and has eight VG & EX daughters with several more to calve. Arguably, the best two cows resulting from that flush landed in the US: Eastriver Gold Deb 851 ended up scoring EX-93 3E at Feltmann Dairy in Minnesota and has six VG & EX daughters by five different sires, including an EX-93 Stanleycup; and Eastriver Gold Deb 850 EX-95, who became well-known for her show ring resume. She was Junior Champion at the Atlantic Summer Show in 2010 as a fall calf for Eastriver, and was the Reserve All-American and Reserve All-Canadian Milking Yearling in 2011 for Butlerview, Durrer and Borba. Sold to Milksource Genetics in 2013, she scored EX-95 there at the young age of 5-10. Her daughter, Milksource Sid Desire, was purchased by David Dyment as a winter calf and was 2nd at Madison in 2015 on her way to being named Reserve All-American Winter Calf. great deal of success with her as she was the All-Canadian Intermediate Calf in 2015 and the All-Canadian Intermediate Yearling in 2016. It didn’t take long for the word to get out about the crazy good Goldwyn x Astronomical Deb matchup. “One of the first ones (850) sold to Donald Dubois who was showing for us, and pretty soon they were all in demand. We sold some as September calves, and most of Deb’s daughters were gone from here by the time they were two,” relates Bruce. “We kept flushing her and tried a few other bulls on her, but nothing ever clicked like Goldwyn. She was an immense cow. Some might say too big for practical purposes, but even though we have a traditional, not real modern tie-stall barn, she got up and down like a young cow and moved around really, really well for a big cow. We never really noticed her! She never had any issues - we never had to call the vet for her, no foot or mobility problems, just a cow that took care of herself. She and all of her daughters were easy to work with, so it was a group that was always nice to have around.” Bruce has sold all of the Deb offspring that he had at Eastriver, and back in 2014 sold half interest in Deb to Leighside Farms of New Brunswick, where she left a few more daughters. To date, Deb has six Excellent (scored from 90 to 93) and six Very Good daughters in Canada, and five Excellent (scored from 91 to 95) and one Very Good daughter in the US.
Back to Eastriver Goldwyn Deb 176 who, as the 2020 Star of the Breed, garnered the highest honor presented to a Holstein cow by the Holstein Association USA. The award recognizes a cow that displays exceptional type combined with outstanding production, and Deb 176 fills the bill on both sides of that equation. I’d purchased a couple of her Goldwyn daughters in previous years, and I saw Gold Deb 176 as close springer on that trip in December of 2015. I bought her that day and struck a deal with Bloyce Thompson to go pick her up and milk her at Eastside. They do an outstanding job and I really liked this heifer and thought she had a ton of potential,” remembers David. “I’d just had

David recalls how she made her way to the US, “Michael Heath called me that spring wondering if I had anything special for their sale (The Best of Triple-T & Heath 2nd edition). This cow came to mind and we made the decision to consign her and brought her out of the east to Ohio for the sale. She sold for about $6,800, and I’ll be honest, I thought she would bring a bit more than she did that day, but I give credit to Michael for getting her sold. He was on the phone with the young guys that bought her, and they have done a great job developing her.” The young guys were Corey Feltmann and Andy Stuewe of Minnesota. Corey actually was trying to buy a nice Ladd-P cow from the sale, but she sold for more than his budget allowed. He was still on the phone with Micheal Heath as Gold Deb 176 came into the ring. “Mike told me to hold on and consider buying her. He said she had a really good udder and had a lot of potential,” recalls Corey. “I was interested because we already owned a full sister to her - Eastriver Gold Deb 851 who had gone EX-93 3E at our place and was really a good cow.” Corey and Andy farm five minutes apart Judge Pat Conroy selected Gold Deb 176 as Senior and Grand Champion of the Midwest Fall National Holstein Show in 2018. from each other in Carver County, MN - not far southwest of the Twin Cities. They’ve owned a number of cattle together over the years and Gold Deb 176 has been one of their favorites, though they may not have guessed that when they got her off the truck from the sale. “She’d made a couple of long trips - from PEI to Ohio, then from Ohio to Minnesota, so she wasn’t overly impressive when we went to pick her up,” laughs Corey. “Andy wasn’t too sure I had done the right thing, but as she settled in at Andy’s, she just kept getting better and better.” That’s not an understatement, as just six weeks later she traveled to the Minnesota State Show where she won the senior 3-year-old class and was named Reserve Intermediate Champion. In 2018, she was the All-MN 4-Year-Old and Reserve Grand Champion of the State Show and then was crowned Senior and Grand Champion of the Midwest Fall National Show that fall. She’s lived at both Andy’s farm (FlowerBrook Holsteins) and Corey’s place (Feltmann Dairy LLC) over the years. She is now scored EX-94 2E and has been an exceptional production cow as well with a top individual record at 4-06 of 45,250M 4.4% 1984F 3.5p 1577P and has lifetime totals of 177,120M 7055F & 6029P to date. Echoing Bruce Wood’s thoughts about her dam, Corey praises her for how easy she is to have around. “She’s really been trouble-free. She’s obviously
been fun to have in the show string, and she makes a lot of milk easily - just a low-maintenance cow.” Corey has plenty of good comments about the whole cow family. “We already owned a Gold Deb (851), that we call Old Deb. SUBLIMINAL ACHIEVES EX-97 HONOR O
ur Summer 2021 cover girl, Blondin Goldwyn SubliminalETS is the newest EX-97 Holstein in the United States! After a Grand Champion win at the Midwest National Spring Show, the 12-year-old perennial show contender earned the esteemed EX-97 classification in late May for her owners Peter & Lyn Vail and Budjon Farms of Lomira, WI. Subliminal was bred by Ferme Blondin, St Placide, QC, and is now the second cow from the Supra family bred by them to be classified EX-97. Subliminal has 8 Very Good and Excellent dams with 80* among them! It is also believed that Ferme Blondin is the first farm to ever breed two Excellent-97 Holsteins. Peter Vail and Budjon purchased Subliminal in 2012 as a junior 3-year-old, which began her tanbark career. She was named Reserve All-Canadian and HM All-American that year, and followed that up as Supreme Champion of the World Dairy Expo Junior Show for Trevor Tuman and Chandler Bening in 2015. She was named All-Canadian Mature Cow in 2016 and Nominated All-American in 2015 and 2016. After winning the Lifetime Production class at Madison in 2017, she earned All-American honors in that category. She took a year off in 2018, and returned in 2019 with another All-American Nomination. After placing 2nd at the North American Open Dairy Show in 2020, she capped off that year with Reserve All-American honors.

Leaving a Lasting Legacy COULEE CREST LLC, CASHTON, WI C
oulee Crest LLC is home to one of the hottest families in the Guernsey breed. The “L” family is building a lasting legacy of index, production and type. Coulee Crest, located in Cashton, WI, is owned by brothers Kurt and Scot Peterson. The farm was started by Kurt and Scot’s grandparents and then their father Don took over in 1958 and milked 50 Registered Guernseys. Kurt came home from college in 1996 and farmed together with his dad, until the early 2000’s when brother Scot left his off-farm computer job and came back to farm full time with Kurt. Presently, the Peterson’s milk 240 cows with 70 Guernseys, 15 Ayrshires and the rest are grade Holsteins. They use the Holstein heifers as recipients for Guernsey embryos. Kurt estimates that at least 40% of their Guernsey herd goes back to the L family on the maternal side. The matriarch of the family is Flambeau Manor Decision Lori, EX-90, who was purchased as part of an embryo package. Her dam was Flambeau Manor Enhancer Lana, EX-92, who had several EX daughters and is backed by two more EX dams. Lori, who is A2A2, had a best record of 3-09 365D 3X 44,250M 5.9% 2,600F 3.0% 1,313P and over 184,000M 10,000F and 6,000P lifetime. She was at one time the #1 CPI Cow in the breed and had several

In turn, Lorilyn’s first daughter, Coulee Crest AP Lorilee, also scored EX-90, was the #1 CPI Cow and completed the Guernsey breed’s first three generations of 40,000M cows, with a best record of 2-10 365D 3X 41,180M 4.7% 1,945F 3.5% 1,425P. Furthermore, one of Lorilee’s daughters, Coulee Crest Copper Leenah, VG-88 completes four generations of #1 CPI Cows!

According to the American Guernsey Association, the sire with the most registered daughters in 2020 was Coulee Crest Novack LamBEAU, who is a son of Leenah siring stylish calves, including several All-American honorees. The sire with the fourth most daughters was Coulee Crest Grumpy Legend, a son of Lorilyn, and the fifth most was Coulee Crest Fame Latimer, a son of Lorilee. In addition, another son of Lorilee, Coulee Crest Conqueror Logo is the current #1 Active bull. It’s easy to say the L family is having an impact on the breed! “Beau is making really deep ribbed, balanced heifers that can be pretty fancy and show well, while Latimer is probably the best udder bull to come from the family yet.
Two granddaughters of Nick Lorilyn were the All-American and Reserve AllAmerican Senior 2-Year-Olds in 2020. Royalty-Manor HP Lite-It-Up-ETV, owned by Haley Beukema of New Richmond, WI, was the Intermediate Champion and Reserve Grand Champion at the National Guernsey Show in Louisville. She was one of the first Guernseys to score VG-89 (EX-MS) as a 2-year-old under a Holstein USA Classifier, and Lite-It-Up also ranks in the top 100 of CPI Cows. Lexi went on to be Junior Champion at Louisville as a Spring Yearling and was the Reserve AllAmerican Junior 2-Year-Old in 2015 and Junior 3-Year-Old in 2016. She also made a best record of 2-02 365D 2X 30,470M 3.9% 1,182F 3.1% 946P. Another branch of the L family is home to the current #1 CPI Cow in the breed, Coulee Crest Pilot Lava, VG-88 A2A2. Lava’s dam, Laredo Lalita, GP-84, is also the #10 CPI cow. The next dam is Decision Lori herself. Daughters of Lava have been topping sales for over a year and her Toby Keith daughters are currently the #1 and #2 CPI heifers in the breed, owned by James and Linda VanPatter of Wisconsin. Lava’s story is an interesting one Kurt explained “Lava’s dam is still in the herd on her fifth lactation now with over 140,000M lifetime and almost 8,000F. We had flushed her as a heifer since she was out of Lori, and got two daughters. We sold one and kept the other, which was Lava. However once Lalita calved in she was a nice cow, a really good milk cow, but not an elite cow, so we didn’t flush her again until just this past year.” Kurt continued “Lava was a nice solid heifer, wasn’t a show heifer but had nice balance and strength. I remember really liking her as a heifer... and she genomic tested really well. She helps prove that genomics, even in Guernseys, helps find the elite animals. She was coming due to calve at 1-11 and she didn’t udder up. We had the vet check her and learned she had a mummy calf in her. We lutalyzed her and she kicked the calf out about a week
later. We wanted to keep her genetic line going so we did IVF her one time, she didn’t make a lot but we did get two heifer calves from that. After that we stuck her in with a bull because we just wanted to get her bred, and she did calve back within a year at 2-11, so that was her first lactation. She really looked nice when she calved back in. Her udder is well attached and she milks great, and she IVFs really good now too!” Her 2-11, 365 day record finished at 27,590M 5.6% 1558F 3.6% 997P.

Peterson’s have IVF’d Lava to several bulls including Toby Keith, JCPenney, Theo, James Dean, London and Drone. Two Toby Keith sons are in AI, Tsunami is at Semex and Hurricane is at ST Genetics, and they should be released later this year. Lava has daughters spread all across North America with several daughters in Canada helping reinvigorate the breed up North! Lava is due to calve with her third calf this summer. “The IVF and embryo work we’ve done the last 1015 years, and utilizing our Holstein heifers, allows us to sell and market a lot and generate income. We generally have 90-100 Guernsey heifers calves a year since we do so much ET work. The demand for Guernseys is really good! The past several years Guernseys have consistently been selling better than most and there are a lot of new buyers in the breed. In the past couple years we’ve sold to several farms in Canada,” Kurt exclaimed. Coulee Crest has a long tradition of breeding and developing long lasting, high producing cows with strength and balance. The prefix is routinely found at the top of index lists,

SOUTHWEST DAIRY CLINIC See a need, fill a need!
hat’s not just a quippy quote from the movie ‘Robots’, it was also the action plan for some dedicated adults wishing to bring more show ring knowledge and skills to young dairy exhibitors in the Southwest US. The idea of an organized dairy showing clinic with demonstrations about preparing, clipping and presenting show heifers had been tossed around last year, but really took hold in 2021 following a conversation at the Midwest Spring Jersey Show in Jefferson, WI.
Eleven-year-old Makayla Monk from Artesia, NM is a young dairy enthusiast that has fallen in love with showing cattle. She’s exhibited Holsteins, Red & Whites, and more recently, Jerseys. In her early days of showing – a couple of years ago – she and her mom, Patricia Yates Monk got to know Mark Brindeiro, a Hilmar, CA native who had relocated to Artesia. He came to the local Eddy County fair to help Makayla get her cattle ready and ended up doing the toplines for 19 other heifers that day. Makayla eventually purchased a couple of Jersey heifers with outstanding type and great pedigrees, one of which – Miss Franchise Colton Venice, a Colton fall calf that traces back to WDE Supreme Champion TJ Classic Minister Venus – was
good enough to go on the spring show circuit this year to Ohio and Wisconsin. They tied in with the Jersey lineup from Bos Dairy, fellow New Mexicans. Venice had a good outing at both shows, and after the conclusion of the Jersey show in Wisconsin, Makayla, Patricia, Nicole Schirm and Kate Pirrung had the idea to put together a fitting and showing clinic for kids from the Southwest who aren’t fortunate enough to learn on the road like Makayla. They settled on a June date, and Patricia took hold of the organizing and started a Facebook page for the clinic to get the word out. Mark and Patricia started contacting potential sponsors and found a large group of people and companies that were delighted to help with the project – enough that the clinic would be held free of charge for the participants and provide them with a free lunch. Next up was coordinating the panel of adults that would present for the kids. Dusty and Nicole Schirm, Kate Pirrung, Mark Brindeiro, Joe Pinedo and Rodney Hetts all agreed to share their knowledge with the kids. The registrations kept coming in and by the closing date, Mark and Patricia were astounded by the response. “We were hoping to get at least
41 youth from New Mexico, Colorado and Texas who participated in the Southwest Dairy Clinic in Artesia, NM. 15 kids from the local area, and we ended up having 41 kids attend from New Mexico, Texas and Colorado”, Mark notes. “We had more dairy heifers at the fairgrounds that day than we usually do for the dairy show at our county fair!” The event was held at the Eddy County Fairgrounds in Artesia, NM and one of the special features of this clinic was that the participants could bring their own project heifer to work on. “Unlike kids in the East and Midwest and where I grew up in California, there aren’t a lot of people in this area to learn from that go to the big

Worth Stock Show, Texas State Jersey Show or any other Southwest Dairy Clinic staff approved show). The excited winner of this elite-pedigreed heifer was Savannah Trammell of Roswell, NM.
The day began with a wash rack tutorial given by Nicole Schirm – what products to use, how to wash, explaining how often to rinse or wash a show heifer, what was best for the hair. Then the group was split in two with half of the participants spending time with Nicole, Kate and Rodney as they went over basic daily heifer care and showmanship. The other half listened and watched as Dusty, Mark and Joe explained and demonstrated basic clipping techniques and explained various fitting supplies. The two groups switched spots and, then after a fabulous lunch, the youth competed against each other in a showmanship judged by Rodney Hetts.
When the event wrapped up for the day, the adults seemed as pumped and enthusiastic as their young protégés.“It was really exciting to see the eagerness to learn from the kids. Sometimes I feel like we’ve all lost the passion to pass on our skills and knowledge to the next generation, but a day like today brings that passion back. I’d love to be involved in future clinics like this – it was really enjoyable!” comments Rodney. Dusty Schirm agreed, “It was such a fantastic experience for us to get to meet so many new and enthusiastic young people and their parents who enabled them to be there with their heifers. Thank you to everyone that played a part in putting this together. The future is bright in New Mexico!”

Mark says that the plan is for the clinic to become an annual event with a date in early May to avoid the severely hot temperatures. He mentioned that this event already spawned a smaller miniclinic a little later in the month where he oversaw hoof trimming, worming and explained some basic nutrition for heifers that needed some help in those areas. “The whole event was amazing and the turnout was mind-blowing! Getting that much star power to our small town and having them share their expertise with these kids was priceless. One of my favorite quotes from one of the parents was ‘I can’t believe you got all the people I always see on Cowsmo show coverage to come here!’“ Mark notes happily. It seems a seed has been planted in the region! We might as well end with another movie quote: ‘If you build it, they will come.’ This seems spot on with the young people and their supportive parents in the great Southwest and we look forward to seeing more of them on the national stage in years to come! The Jessica family leads the way ELMAR EXTR AVAGANZA HOLSTEIN SALE

he long awaited Elmar Extravaganza Holstein Sale was held April 22 in Leitchville Victoria, Australia, with outstanding results which saw 59 females average $10,356 and nine embryo package average $6934. The sale grossed an amazing $673,400AUS. The Jessica family was always going to be the star attraction of the sale with 32 females from the Jessica family averaging an amazing $12,500 with nine daughters of herd favorite Elmar Goldwyn Jessica 11 EX-93 4E averaging an incredible $18,833. Top price of the sale was lot 3 Elmar Solomon Jessica 7 VG-89 who created a bidding frenzy and was finally knocked down to the long established Calderlea herd of Les, Louise, Tim and Amanda Calder of Stoney Creek in Gippsland VIC for $46,500. This remarkable cow calves in July to exciting new sire Arrow (sexed) . There were four females that made over $20,000 including Lot 17 Lambda Jessica 4483, a ready-to-join half sister to the top price cow. She was purchased by Dickson Family from Cobden, VIC. The Dicksons also secured another daughter of Jessica 11 by Lambda for $14,000. The Dicksons purchased seven head in total for an average of $11,500. Kevin, Helen and Mitch Jones from Foster. VIC bought arguably the best type cow in the sale in Elmar Golden Dream Serenade, EX-92 for $20,000. The Jones also secured another Lambda Jessica 11 daughter due to sexed Arrow in September for $21,000.
Local Breeder Andy Freemantle from Dingee purchased Elmar Solomon Lulu a quality VG-87 milker from the Famous Canadian Idee Lustre family for $12,000. Struan Trading from Simpson purchased a quality heifer in Elmar Chill Jessica for $12,500. This young milker is due to calve again in November to popular new sire Jagger (sexed) whilst local breeder Chad Gordon purchased wisely when Elmar Solomon Jessica 3 VG-87 was knocked down to him for $12,000. There were nine embryo packages sold with a significant purchase being six sexed embryos by Arrow from Million Jessica sold to well-known Canadian breeders Steve and Jackie Fraser from Ontario. All in all it was a remarkable sale with purchases made to all Australian states. It is undoubtedly a sale that will be remembered as the day the Jessicas spread worldwide. Flanagan Marketing Services conducted the sale and provided this sale report with Nick Flanagan auctioneering. The Jessica story was explained in detail in the front of the beautifully designed sale catalog. The following are excerpts from it: “Just a few bids on a nice young calf that was in my price range as a 16-year-old, when I was helping lead at the Northern Lights Sale,” said Steve Hore, thus beginning one of the most prolific Holstein families in recent Australian years. The Jessica family can be traced back through the Holstein pedigrees to Ingloston Mooie Triumph 3131 born in 1926 – 95 years later those genetics have spread far and wide. The calf was Barkly Starbuck Jennie-ET VG87. Jennie went on to be a 4-star brood cow.

Elmar Solomon Jessica 7 VG-89 was the topping selling animal at $46,500. After Steve’s grandfather Martin Hore passed away, he received a small amount of money. Enough for a feed at the pub now days, but in the 80’s it was enough to single flush the Starbuck to Bridon Astro Jet when the ET program was happening. As luck would happen it was a heifer. Steve wasn’t fussed on the name Jennie & decided to put his mark on the family and change the name to Jessica along with his prefix. Elmarste Astro Jessica-ET VG85 entered the herd. This nice young cow produced 4 daughters over 8 lactations. The most lasting impact was Elmarste Wars Jessica VG-88 2*. Still carrying the Elmarste prefix “Wars Jessica” as she was known, went around the show circuit in the early 90’s, Steve on the halter. ET work helped expand the family by 12 daughters. A Broker Jessica daughter resulted in the one and only Elmar Leader Jessica. “As a calf she always stood out, bold and beautiful and a touch of brown in colour” Steve said. She calved as a 2-year-old and placed mid-class at the Bendigo Spring Feature Show in October 1999. She was a bit heavy, so there was no thoughts of exhibiting her at IDW that year. That year after IDW, Elmar hosted the annual post dairy week sub branch get together. Back then some of the international visitors and judges would stay on and look around. On this day, with the Elmar herd under the willow trees up the drive, Lowell Lindsay was looking
through the herd. One cow is on the wrong side of the tree bay, and Steve doesn’t know how she got there. Lowell Lindsay casually says “Man, that cow would have been my Intermediate Champion, why wasn’t she at the show?”. We guessed she had lost the weight but didn’t pay the late entry fee! The following year in 2001 Leader Jessica was Intermediate Champion and Supreme Udder. A fine effort for a senior 3 year old to come up with an udder over all other entries. Jessica attracted a lot of attention worldwide. Steve’s comment: “She was before her time”. That year the international judges had their eyes on a prize. Could they get Jessica to the USA. Actually No. What stopped them? – protocols. Live animals had to complete a total of 90 days quarantine both in Australia and in the USA and Jessica was pregnant with a due date in that time frame. The stumbling hurdle given that no one in quarantine knows anything about milking cows or calving them. Hurdle two – she was bigger than a horse so the shipping box for a horse would need to be modified. Steve was pretty sure he would get a ticket to the US with Jessica on the same cargo plane. Setting the price and making the conversion into AUD was just another hurdle. Ultimately it all became unrealistic and we loved Jessica in our herd. Judges Norm Atkins and Norman Nabholz followed Leader Jessica as fans throughout her career. Jessica was All Australian in 2001, 2002 and 2003. Jessica’s run had started. Steve and Deanne had three children, built a 44 rotary dairy and milked 250 cows, but still found time to show. At IDW 2002 Jessica calved and returned for Reserve Champion Holstein under Hank Van Exel USA. IDW 2003 was to be Jessica’s year again, crowned Supreme Exhibit & Supreme Udder of the Show. Internationally recognized judges Robert Yeoman & Norman Nabholz again loved Jessica enough to demand a price. Live export was just too hard. So, given the world recognition Elmar Leader Jessica had received she was nominated for the Holstein International Cow of the Year award. Jessica was awarded reserve by the narrowest of margins and back then no one from Australia could vote!
IDW 2015 was truly a year to remember with three Jessicas winning Grand, Reserve and Honorable Mention Champion honors for team Elmar. Jessica calved again in 2004 and took out the Semex on Farm Mature cow award. IDW 2005 rolled around with the Gordon boys in tow as teenagers, helping prep a cow they thought looked pretty good. Everything had gone to plan until one hour before the show. Jessica stopped eating, but in true form she paraded into the hot ring like a champ. After being crowned Reserve Champion she left the ring hot, flat and would later collapse. Vets worked with Jessica but under the most stressful time she passed away the next morning. Autopsy results proved an infectious bug Klebsiella, that is prolific in wood shavings, to be the cause. Jessica is buried at Elmar. Jessica’s loss was felt amongst so many people in the show and Holstein world. We received some of the most beautiful messages and words of comfort at this time but after that, we as a family needed a break from showing. As time went by, we kept breeding cows and growing our family until the time felt right to enter the show circuit again. We started with a couple for calves at the local Cohuna show again with the help of the Gordon boys who had grown up just a bit into young men. It was time for Kelsie, Marty and Brady to start showing. Little did we know the ride was going to be full of thrills.
The next show was Kerang in the spring. The boys were keen as mustard, however not all our milkers were quiet enough to handle the old halters we were using and a little bit of Goldwyn pressure and snap we nearly had a Goldwyn Jessica loose on the show grounds, luckily someone shut the doors on the shed. This didn’t stop the boys from their enthusiasm to get a blue ribbon. We all worked behind the scenes to grow the Jessica family, we always knew Elmar Leader Jessica was before her time and we needed to find the next special one. But we found more than one! The biggest day in our lives was to be IDW 2015. Grand, Reserve & Honourable Mention – all three Jessica’s. Bred, owned and shown by Steve, Marty and Brady with Mitchell Flemming behind the scenes. That night we had a party to remember. No winners, no losers, just Elmar. The story doesn’t end there, we’re not sure where or when it will end. At IDW 2018 Goldwyn Jessica 11 won Supreme Exhibit after being the Reserve cow in 2015. And with new owners of Jessicas around the world, this story is certainly not complete.

THE HAPPY LADIES OF WISCONSIN By Doug Urban The summer of 1975 was a memorable one for me and as an active 4-H and FFA member I was gone a large part of the summer attending conventions, dairy judging contests, the Wisconsin State Fair and cow shows. It was at the Wisconsin Championship Show in Shawano where I first saw an extremely tall, sharp dairy cow with an outstanding udder named Dunco Kayser Happy Barbara EX-94 DOM win the Grand Champion cow title as selected by judge Tom Nunes of California. At the halter was a petite woman named Barbara Kayser who led the 4-year-old daughter of Harborcrest Happy Crusader EX-92 GM. Later that year Happy Barbara placed first and was named Best Udder in class at the Central National Holstein Show in Madison with Barb at the halter once again. She was named All-American 4-Year-Old Cow in 1975, and was also a member of the 1975 All-American Honorable Mention Get of Sire and 1976 All-American Get of Sire by Harborcrest Happy Crusader EX-92 DOM. Her dam, a Good Plus-83 daughter of Our Black Diamond EX-91, was purchased at the Dunn County Hospital Farm dispersal and calved a month later with Barbara. Barbara had one daughter, Kayser Commander Happy Chiffon VG88 by Arlinda Commander VG-88 GM. Alvin and Barb Kayser of Janesville were active members of the state and national

Holstein Association. Barb would be seen for many years to come showing her prized Holsteins at District and State Holstein shows and World Dairy Expo. Barb said, “Barbara put us on the map. My love for the Holstein cow is still alive today. I still help with some of our local shows and at World Dairy Expo. I always took the show string to the shows and considered it my vacation even though I worked the whole time. When showing is in your blood, it’s there forever.” At the same show in Shawano, another Harborcrest Happy Crusader daughter Dicharl Happy Beauty EX-90, would top a group of 32 cows to win the Three-Year-Old class for Dianne and Charles Heike of Dicharl Holsteins in Mondovi, WI. It was the following year in 1976 at the Wisconsin Championship Show where Beauty would really shine. Denise Deaton-Tolzman reminisced, “My brother, Alan Deaton, family friend, LeRay Hass and I took a total of 4 heifers and yearlings to the Wisconsin Championship Show in Lancaster in 1976. We were tied next to Diane and Chuck Heike. I remember walking in and seeing Beauty and thinking wow, what a cow! Her name was more than appropriate. I remember Dianne and Chuck talking about their lone entry. Several of their fellow Buffalo County breeders had convinced them that Beauty was a gem. Dianne, with her nervous laugh, spent most of the day before the show talking about how many of hours of milk to put into Beauty. Show day came and Dianne helped us get our heifers to the show ring. Chuck gave Dianne a hug on the way to ring with Dianne leading Beauty. I remember Dianne saying something like, well here goes nothing. When she came back out after winning the class, Dianne and Chuck were beyond thrilled. It was all smiles when Beauty won Grand. What a fun day for them in Lancaster in 1976.” Beauty was later named the Grand Champion Cow of the show. According to the show
report in the Wisconsin Holstein News, Dianne’s happy smile and “Happy Beauty” lit up the show arena and left a glow that made a warm spot for them both in the hearts of the audience, and a fitting climax for the largest State Show ever held, with 418 head paraded for Judge Richard Keene of New York. Dianne and Happy Beauty had continued success at the Central National National Holstein Show in Madison where she was first place FourYear Old Cow and second Best Udder in class. Beauty was also a member of the 1975 All-American Honorable Mention Get of Sire and 1976 All-American Get of Sire by Harborcrest Happy Crusader EX92 DOM. She had a daughter, Dicharl Stan Kerlee EX-91 who was sired by a Paclamar Bootmaker EX-94 GM son. Dianne passed away in 2007. She had partnered with her husband for 37 years to run a dairy farm and was known to wear many hats. She was very talented at showing dairy cattle and was an entrepreneur having several small businesses in Mondovi. She had an extensive collection of aprons and wrote about aprons having a book “My Grandma’s Aprons” published in 2003. Another daughter of Harborcrest Happy Crusader was led by Cheryl Ehrke, a junior Holstein member from Fort Atkinson. Her cow, Ehrke Norma Happy Pamela EX-93, was born on the family farm and was out of Ehrke Kandy Astronaut Norma VG-88, a daughter of Paclamar Astronaut EX-90 GM. Pamela was first shown as a ThreeYear Old in 1976 and was also a member of the 1976 All-American Get of Sire by
Clarkco Happy Verna EX-91 achieved many accolades both in and out of the show ring, including inspiring the artwork on Grassland Sweet Cream Butter.
Happy. In 1977, she placed second in the Four-Year Old Cow class and first Bred and Owned at the Central National Show in Madison. She later received recognition as High Honorable Mention Junior AllAmerican. When asked about her cow’s personality Cheryl said, “The four animals that were used in the Get of Sire Class were notoriously attitudinal! I believe it took at least 45 minutes to picture them one year. Pamela always gave me a run for my money in the show ring. I was relieved when her class was over after fighting with her the whole time we were in the ring! It became evident to me that her attitude came from her udder being full of milk. She was actually very easy to work with when she wasn’t bagged for a show.” Cheryl said that Pamela’s legacy has carried on through her descendants. Current descendants of Pamela go back 16 generations. Of the more recent females scored, there were 5 Excellents and 14 Very Good. Cheryl farmed in partnership with her father Bill Ehrke for 10 years after graduating from UWMadison with a degree in Dairy Science. She remained active with the Holstein Association by serving as a delegate to the National Holstein Convention and as a member of various Wisconsin Holstein Association committees. She was dairy

superintendent for the Jefferson County Fair for many years and continues to work with 4-H and FFA youth. Her daughter, Cierra Ehrke-Essock continues the family tradition of showing and being involved with Registered Holsteins. Cheryl now works at Cheri’s Couture Custom Sewing and Design and is a Math Aide at Fort Atkinson Schools.
Champion Female at the Illinois State Show. Jill later worked at Grassland Dairy Products for 28 years as Vice-President of Sales and Marketing. She now works with a herd of Wagyu cattle with Jim Hoskens at Baycroft Cattle Company in De Pere, WI where she markets meat to local Green Bay restaurants and sells embryos and semen all over the world.
A fourth memorable Harborcrest Happy Crusader cow was shown by Jill Stump, a fellow 4-Her from Greenwood. Her mom, Dawn Stump found Clarkco Happy Verna EX-91 at friend and neighbors Hubert and Gerald Horn’s farm and Keith and Dawn Stump purchased her as a Three-Year Old for Jill and she came to Distinction Farm. Jill’s Grandpa John D. Wuethrich of Grassland Butter fame was good friends with Hubert Horn and they always sat together on the bottom bleacher at the show and watched Jill show Verna. Jill showed her and won showmanship several years in a row despite the fact that Verna was a handful in the early years. Jill recalls a time when they fed Verna a case of beer so that she could handle her in the show ring at the Clark County Fair. After winning first place in showmanship Verna laid down in the ring just as Jill was being handed the trophy. Jill said she was very embarrassed as several people tried to get her cow to stand up. Jill and Verna became good friends and Verna, when out on pasture, would come over and put her head down so she could get her head rubbed. 1978 was a very good year for Verna and Jill as Clarkco Happy Verna was Grand Champion at the District 4 Holstein Show and at the Junior Show at the Wisconsin State Fair. Later that Fall Verna was the second high-seller at the Tri-State Superstar Sale where she was sold to Allyn Brower of Winnebago, IL. The following year she was Grand
The bull 14HO242 Harborcrest Happy Crusader was born in 1965 and was owned by Tri-State Breeders of Westby, WI. He was a son of Wis Ideal Crusader VGGM and out of Harborcrest Maple Raven EX-93-3E a daughter of Raven Burke Ideal EX-GM. His granddam was the All-Time All-American show cow Harborcrest Rose Milly3E-97 GMD. “Happy” sired show winners all over the United States in the 1970’s, but I will always remember the joy that Barbara, Beauty, Pamela and Verna brought to these four women in Wisconsin during that time.

The top six entries in each class are chosen for Nomination. These Nominations are submitted to the All-American Panel for voting. Point values are assigned as follows: Each first place vote, 7 points; second place, 3 points; and third place, 1 point. By simple arithmetic, the award of All-American and Reserve AllAmerican are determined in order of total points. Nominees with 20 points or more are High Honorable Mention and nominees receiving 16 point or more is given Honorable Mention.
