AJCA & NAJ ANNUAL MEETINGS

2021 HOLSTEIN CANADA ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

The pandemic situation of the past year and a half has given Holstein Canada the opportunity to demonstrate its ability to adapt and modernize in this fast-paced world. This year, Holstein Canada hosted a virtual Annual General Meeting (AGM), which was an inclusive formula in many ways. The virtual nature of the event allowed members of all provinces, ages and languages to participate in the AGM and take part in discussions. This year marked Gerald Schipper’s last AGM. Mr. Schipper served as President of the Holstein Canada Board of Directors from April 2019 to July 2021 and as Director for Ontario since 2013. Holstein Canada would like to thank Mr. Schipper for his dedication and his involvement with the Association and the breed. During his two terms as President, his leadership has ensured that Holstein Canada will continue to play an important role in the future of dairy farming in Canada. Twenty resolutions (2019-2020) were presented at the AGM; the results of the votes are available on our website. Other resolutions were also dealt with i outside of the AGM. The provincial branches have done an outstanding and trustworthy job. Let’s not forget that, with the new process for submitting resolutions, some have been sent directly to Lactanet. This process strengthens our partnership and we trust their willingness to make things happen. One of the highlights of the AGM was the shared commitment between the breeds and Lactanet to release more production data to the public in 2022.

Financial Statement Presentation

Despite the various challenges of the pandemic in 2020 and 2021, the Association remains in an excellent financial position for which the two key factors were the reduction in travels and the Covid-19 subsidies. Financial statements are available in the Annual Report.

Changes at the Board Level

The day after the virtual AGM, the Board of Directors elected Élyse Gendron (VAL BISSON) of Saint- Polycarpe, QC as President for 2021-2022. The President will be teamed with an Executive consisting of 1st Vice President Ben Cuthbert (SILVERMAPPLE) of Ladysmith, BC and 2nd Vice President Doug Peart (PEARTOME) of Hagersville, ON. The Board also welcomes Brian Slaughter, Director for Ontario. Brian will bring a wealth of knowledge to the Board through his involvement at the provincial level and in various areas of the industry.

BROWN SWISS CATTLE BREEDERS’ ASSOCIATION ANNUAL MEETING

President Portner called the 141st Annual Meeting of the Brown Swiss Cattle Breeders’ Association of the USA (BSCBA) to order on Thursday, July 1, 2021, in Hadley, MA. Executive Secretary Norm Magnussen gave the notice of the annual meeting. President Portner then called for a moment of silence for those deceased breeders and friends over the past year. Lee Barber, Chair of the Tally Committee, gave the report: as of April 30, 2021, BSCBA had 631 members with a quorum requirement of 63. There were 83 members present in person or by proxy giving a quorum. A motion was made by Richard Hill to approve the minutes from 2020, with a second by Lyle Bursiek. Motion passed.

President’s Message

President Portner thanked the Brown Swiss breeders for all of their support and hard work with the year we had last year. It was disappointing to not be able to meet last year, but we have enjoyed seeing everyone this year. President Portner also recognized the past president Richard Sparrow for the four years of service to the board. He also recognized the hard work of the Executive Secretary and the staff for their dedication and hard work. He recognized the adaptation of the board of directors for the work with meetings. Portner recognizes the changes made to the fees in December of last year. Working within the constraints of the budget and with the need to hire more staff as the office was at a minimum for staff, it was important to make some changes to the fees. Other things coming from these changes will be repairs to the office building so that we can preserve the National office. President Portner addressed the next year convention dates with the membership. With the dates of the convention next year being outside of the bylaw dates, a special meeting will be designated for the National Convention next year so that it can be hosted from June 7-10, 2022. We have upgraded our classification software program that was put into use last year and the work is progressing on promoting Brown Swiss on Facebook. Portner also thanked Phil Heck and Dennis Worden for their service on the board.

Executive Secretary Report

Magnussen thanked the New England Association for hosting this year’s convention and all the hard work they have done. Current staff at the office is 5 employees as well as classifiers. The association has an accounting firm that comes monthly to review the financials. We are due for an audit in 2023. The World Brown Swiss Conference will be hosted in 2022 in Madison, WI, in conjunction with World Dairy Expo. Last year, we had increases in prefixes, registrations, BSA herds, and classification herds were up from 2019. So far for 2021, we have had an increase of BSA herds signed up as well as an increase in BSA cows for the year. Election of Directors Brian Lammers, Ohio, was re-elected as the District III Director. Jason Albert, Illinois, was elected as District IV Director. Dayne Voelker, Missouri, was elected as the Director of District VI. Phil Heck and Dennis Worden were presented with a citation of leadership for their years of dedication to the Board of Directors.
