Here's to the Return!

s I tap this out on the computer, we’re rapidly approaching the opening day of World Dairy Expo in Madison, WI. As a Wisconsinite (and with Julie being from northern Illinois), I realize how fortunate we are to live so close to our industry’s premier event, and look forward to gathering there every year. Last year, of course, we missed that opportunity with the cancellation of the 2020 edition of WDE. There were other functions to attend, and so many in our business did a remarkable job of creating new events or upgrading their regional shows to be sure there were opportunities for people to exhibit cattle. But there was still something missing without Expo. There’s something a little bit magic about World Dairy Expo that makes it greater than the sum of its parts. It’s more than just the tremendous cattle shows or the expansive trade show. There’s an energy generated in the barns and on the grounds that isn’t replicated anywhere else. I can’t quite put my finger on what to call it, but I believe it’s the power of the shared passion of thousands of dairy cattle lovers gathering together for a week.

When you meet up with other who share your passions and beliefs, you lift each other up. There’s a ‘re-charge’ of your spirits and your attitude when you gather with others who get up and get working each morning for many of the same reasons you do. For those that show cattle, it’s a chance to assess how you’re doing compared to the very best. For those of us from northern climes, it’s the positive boost of motivation you need before heading into a long winter!

There’s edification in all of the casual conversations in the barns or sitting in the stands or with someone working a trade show booth where you learn something new or think about doing something a different way. For all of the more focused business-related conversations - whether about selling cattle or buying equipment those talks that can make a big difference to your operation or your bank account. We live in a remarkable age when we can watch the best shows including Madison at home on our phones or on our computers/TVs. And I’m really grateful for that! No one does the cattle show video livestream better than World Dairy Expo - they really capture the atmosphere of the event for those that are watching at home. We can’t all make the trip to WDE every year, so thank goodness that we can still ‘tune in’ to see our favorite cows on the colored shavings. But please try to make the trip when you can. The face-to-face interaction

with your peers is invaluable - as Scottie Pippen says above - there’s nothing like the camaraderie of your ‘team’. It’s the reason we like going to church or rooting for an NFL team, but this group gets you - gets why you do what you do everyday and that makes this reunion week extra special. It feels like a homecoming - with all the feelings of excitement, nostalgia and gratitude wrapped up together. If you’re watching from home anywhere around the globe - enjoy! We look forward to seeing you in person somewhere soon! For those of you heading to Madison and taking the exit onto John Nolen Drive we’ll see you there! New Generation - New Passion!

O

ne of the most engaging dynamics to discover when doing a feature on a multi-generation farm family is learning who has a passion for what in the operation. Some family members love the fieldwork, some love fixing equipment and maintenance, some love the daily chores with the cows, and some love planning and mating the future herd. When you have a big operation and a big family like the Hills of Bristol, Vermont, everyone can find a place to shine! Four Hills Farm, located south of Burlington in the rolling landscape of north-central Vermont, was established in its Bristol location in 1973 by Robert

and Jeanette Hill after their original operation in Williston, Vermont burned in 1971. Robert moved to Bristol with 50 grade Holsteins. He loved showing in 4-H, so when he bought cows to fill up the barn, he focused on buying registered stock his young kids could show. The original herd grew slowly to about 200 Holsteins and saw moderate growth over the years until a new double-24 herringbone parlor and a new free-stall barn was built in 1996, which allowed the herd to grow to over 1000 cows. In time, three more free-stall barns were constructed and in 2017, a new double-37 parallel parlor saw the cow numbers make another big jump to over 1700 cows and now up to 2,300

cows today (2200 Holsteins, 70 Jerseys, and 30 Ayrshires). When Robert & Jeanette retired, the four Hill siblings (the source of the farm name) - Ron, Brian, Joanne, and Kevin - purchased the operation. With over 5,700 acres of rented and owned land and a big herd of cows to manage, the responsibilities needed to be divvied up between the second-generation partners. Ron leads the dairy division and the maintenance of the dairy facilities; Joanne is the calf manager; Brian oversees the cropping; and Kevin handles the mechanical maintenance, some of the crops, and takes a special interest in the show cattle. And now the third-generation of Hills are finding their positions on the farm. Both Ron and Brian each have three children that have active roles at Four Hills. Ron’s daughter, Megan (23), is a manager at the dairy, and also manages the show string and business related to that. Ron’s son, Johnny (20), is a crop manager and handles some of the mechanical maintenance; and his other daughter, Sarah (16), is a senior in high school, and helps wherever needed on the farm, while also focusing on the show heifers. Brian’s daughter Elizabeth (27) helps with the office work, while

Britney (25) is a dairy, young stock and business manager. His son, Bradley (21), is a mechanical manager and helps with the cropping. The family has always enjoyed taking cattle to the shows, and had a significant amount of success, but it was viewed more as a hobby than as a possible income stream. That’s beginning to change under the management of Megan. “In the past our family may not have been eager to sell anything. I’m trying to change that in order to make some income off of our breeding efforts,” comments Megan. She returned to the farm after earning her Agricultural Business degree at SUNY-Cobleskill. In 2013, the family completed a big goal they had set for themselves - to breed a milking class winner in each breed that they exhibit at World Dairy Expo. It began in 2005 with a Holstein winning the Milking Yearling class - Four-Hills Luci Cassi EX-91 - All-American Milking Yearling. Then in the Ayrshire breed, Four-Hills Tdent Snoopy 2634 EX-94, who won her class as a Junior 2-Yearold & Junior 3-Year-Old in 2011 & 2012, and All-American both years. Four-Hills Adv Kalie EX-93 was 1st place Milking Yearling in the Red & White Show in 2011; and Four-Hills 1st Blue VG-89% was the winning Senior 2-Year-Old in the Jersey Show in 2013.

Pedigree plays a big role in buying decisions. My goal is to make FourHills a ‘breeder herd’, so in order to do that, I’ve invested into some of the most elite families currently in the show world. I also think the animal needs to match her pedigree. She needs to be nice enough that she can carry on the family legacy and breeding potential. Sire stack also plays a big role - being as large as we are, we definitely are able to form opinions on bulls based on daughters we are milking - either good or bad!” MEGAN HILL It’s gratifying to see a legacy made over 15 years ago carry on,” smiles Megan. With four breeds to work with, there are a few herd favorites that come to mind for Megan: • Four-Hills Abush Sammy EX-94 (Ayrshire), a daughter of Snoopy who also won at World Dairy Expo and was nominated All-American for multiple years. • Kellogg-Bay Amedeo Gladys EX-93% (Jersey), the foundation to most of the Jersey herd today. She herself was a three-time top 10 finisher at Expo. She has two daughters making the trip to Madison this year, along

with one granddaughter (Four-Hills Velocity Glorianna) and two great granddaughters. Gladys has proved to be a tremendous brood cow who has put the Four-Hills Jersey program on the map! • Four-Hills Velocity Glorianna EX-92% (Jersey), Grand Champion of the International Junior Jersey Show in 2019. She not only accomplished my lifelong dream of walking in the Supreme Champion pageant at Expo but also is following in her grandmother’s footsteps by proving to be an awesome brood cow. Her first milking daughter is owned by Vierra Dairy and has been undefeated in the

Her fall calf by Kid Rock will be on the trip to Expo and looks really good! • Ainger Advent Jessa EX-94 (Red & White), was Britney’s junior career show cow, and was named Grand Champion of the International Red & White Junior Show and nominated both open and junior All-American in multiple years. Her daughters have done very well in the show ring, and lots of her descendants are herd favorites. • Petitclerc Doorman Sapphire EX-94 (Holstein), is the first Holstein cow we’ve gotten excited about in a long time, and we think her story is just beginning! Her personality is second to none - she’s such a fun cow to work with. Her first daughters were born in June and look like carbon copies to her, so we are eager to get them in the show ring next year.

Judge Callum McKinven recently selected Four Hill Velocity Glorianna as Grand Champion of the Massachusetts State Jersey Show. When it comes to marketing, Megan is using traditional venues. “Currently almost everything is getting sold either in consignment sales or at shows. I think the world of mouth will come into play once people start to see that we are selling, and willing to let go of our best now - a bit different than we did in the past.” Even with the new emphasis on merchandising, the Hills are always keeping an eye out to add a good individual to the herd, though they are fairly exacting in their standards. “Pedigree plays a big role in buying decisions. Since 2012, the Hills have produced about twice the electricity needed to run the farm on a given summer day through their enrollment in Green Mountain Power’s Cow Power program. In the program, the Hills use methane from cow manure seasoned in the digester to turn a turbine and create electricity; Green Mountain Power buys the electricity and sells it to general customers, thus giving farmers an

incentive to operate digesters. They’ve also adapted no-till farming practices for much of their acreage, along with soil-stabilizing cover cropping. As a result, they’ve won conservation awards and strive to be a ‘good citizen’ in their rural area. The Hills believe strongly in educating the community about farming, and have been a popular stop on the Tour de Farms, a Vermont cycling event that connects consumers with local food producers and farmers each fall. As everywhere, the situation for dairy producers keeps evolving in Vermont. “Last year we got a “quota” imposed on us, which is very scary because it’s nothing we ever expected or planned for. In the past the farm’s philosophy has always been to expand to allow new family members to come back and have the farm stay profitable. Now we need to explore other ways to make income on the farm and become more efficient. This is a challenge that my generation is ready to take on and become better farmers,” asserts Megan. A Powerhouse for Brown Swiss I

f you took a poll of attendees’ memories from the 2019 World Dairy Expo, ‘Brown Swiss show’ would probably appear more than once. Not only did Delilah walk away with backto-back Grand Champion titles, but the official judge provided entertainment of his own - from crouching in the ring for the perfect look to unique reasons like “She’s a honey of a calf,” “She’s a silk wagon,” and finally about his Grand Champion, “She’s a train coming at ya, and if she’s a train, what a caboose!” The man behind the mic that day was Joe Sparrow of Fairdale Farm LLC, a small, but powerhouse Brown Swiss operation located in Owenton, Kentucky. And while the cows that day were certainly impressive, Joe’s speech during Grand Champion was heartful and brought emotion to the crowd: “25 years ago, I was sitting in the passenger seat of my dad’s pick-up truck like any other Saturday in winter, we ground ear corn every Saturday to feed our cattle for the week and it was fun to get to be with him alone. We got biscuits

and gravy and it was the highlight of my week. I was about halfway through my third biscuit when he stopped me and asked me to open the glove box, and in it was a bank envelope with eight $100 bills, and he told me he had saved that money to buy my brothers and I our first Brown Swiss calf at the upcoming spring sale. And we did, Goldfawn Lucy, who went on to be an Excellent cow, and he lit a fire that day in me for dairy and Brown Swiss that will never be put out. He fostered it, took us to 25 county fairs every summer, drug us all over the place, works daylight to dark, and just to help us support our dream. And as a parent, that is the greatest thing you can do, support your children’s dreams, and I only hope I can do something like that for my boys, thank you all for everything you’ve done for me!” Pretty remarkable that this day in 1994 would be the fuel that has fired three brothers to breed and develop an outstanding herd of Brown Swiss that has earned national recognition in both the show ring and the barns at home.

Richard Sparrow, the patriarch of Fairdale, purchased his first grade Brown Swiss in 1962 and shipped milk to a local Kraft food processor. He has farmed his whole life, and sons Ben, Joe and Kirby joined the operation, starting their own farm in 2012. Today, they milk 40 Registered Brown Swiss, while all having off the farm jobs as well. Richard is on the farm fulltime, but one of the three boys are on the farm each day to assist with chores, farming and day-to-day activities; there are no other employees than the four of them. The next generation of Sparrows is eager to start, but it might be a few years for Archie (5), Wylie (3) and Hallie (3). Cows are housed in a compost bedded pack barn, fed grain in the parlor and a PMR outside. The Sparrows farm 800 acres and grow their own Corn Silage and Triticale/Ryegrass baleage as well. While the set-up is simple and the nutrition uncomplicated, the cows of Fairdale know how to work. With an RHA of 28,520M 4.4F 3.6P on 40 cows, they were named High Herd in

Kentucky for Energy Corrected Milk in both 2019 and 2020. The entire herd averages a classification score of 88.2. The breeding goals are relatively simple as well according to Joe: “Our goals are to improve our herd with each crop of 2-year-olds we freshen in. We have IVF’d 10 sessions already in 2021 and focus on udder with production and overall type traits. Additionally, DPR has become a major factor in our sire selection compared to 5 years ago.” The efforts that they have put forth with their breeding program has certainly proven worthwhile. In 2019, they received the Ira Inman PTPR Trophy for Group 2 (30-49 cows) from the Brown Swiss Association. This trophy “can only be gained through a total progressive dairy program including breeding, feeding and management,” according to BSA. They were runners-up in 2020 in the same category by fewer than 100 points, but nearly 600 points above the thirdplace farm. While the brothers began showing at a young age, the blue ribbons didn’t come automatically. They’ve built and developed an outstanding herd over the last two decades, and with that hard work and dedication, have the seen the results firsthand. Since 2010, Fairdale has bred or owned 40 All American Nominations, with numerous state and national champion titles along the way. They’ve also received Premier Exhibitor recognition at two national shows – Harrisburg in 2019 and Louisville in 2020. While many of the cows at Fairdale are homebred, the Sparrows also recognize the importance of adding new genetics to the herd. When looking to purchase animals, Joe remarked, “Udders and cow families. That’s where it starts for us.”

Fairdale Carter Cameo was Reserve Junior Champion at Louisville in 2020, earning her HM All American honors. Her dam, Fairdale Renegade B Cali was HM All American 2018 and 2019. Her grandam, Renegade-Fairdale PS Carma (VG-88 Cert*) was All American Spring Calf in 2010 and All American Spring Yearling in 2011. Her 3rd dam was a EX-91 EX-MS Blue Chip then Hills Valley Jetway Cola (2E-93), All American 5-Year-Old in 2006. Her next two dams were also Excellent. Cameo has returned to the ring in 2021, recently named 1st Fall Yearling and Junior Champion of the Kentucky State Fair.

While Fairdale certainly likes to purchase into new families and expand their genetics, they also see the value in selling select individuals. They manage the Kentucky National Brown Swiss Sale in the spring, usually consigning about 10 individuals. They also have a great relationship with Wayne Sliker, consigning to several of the Modern Associates Sales throughout the year. Additionally, they can move cattle through private treaty from social media and word of mouth. Combining purchasing and selling in one package is Fairdale Total Cali (3E-94). The Sparrows purchased Vance embryos out of Shen-Val Jetway Cinderella (2E-93), a two-time National Total Performance winner and National Cow For All Seasons winner. Shen-Val Vance Carol was born at Fairdale, eventually scoring EX-91 92MS and was 2nd 4-year-old at the 2009 Kentucky State Fair. Her daughter is Fairdale Total Cali, who was consigned as a winter calf in the 2012 Midwest Revue

Sale and purchased by Ally Jones, KY. Under Ally’s ownership, Cali was Reserve Bellringer Aged Cow and Reserve Senior Champion of the Southeastern Show in 2018. She was sold privately to Emily Goode, also of Kentucky. Emily and Cali saw continued success in 2020, with Grand Champion wins in both the Open and Junior Shows at Louisville, earning her the National Bellringer award and Reserve All American honors. Cali has continued her winning streak into 2021, being named Grand Champion at Spring Dairy Expo and most recently winning the Component Merit class at the Kentucky State Fair. Showing and milking cows aren’t the only activities the Sparrow family is involved in. Richard ended his tenure of President of the Brown Swiss Association this past year, and all the Sparrow brothers enjoy judging and working with the next generation. They are also actively involved in marketing of Brown Swiss genetics and are working at progressing the breed. “I believe Brown Swiss has and is trending up compared to the other

We can’t see what the future holds, however there is no denying that consolidation is coming and has been in the dairy industry,” commented Joe. “As far as our own farm goes, we will always be looking for ways to adapt and survive and given our location, that may mean some drastic changes on how our milk is marketed.” While their numbers may be small, the results have been incredible at Fairdale. And it’s truly a team effort. While Joe certainly was in the spotlight at the 2019 World Dairy Expo, he recognized his family for make the sacrifice to not exhibit that year. Yet, his family fully backed him, and they wouldn’t have done it any differently. “Judging World Dairy Expo was one of the best moments of my life and a dream come true. I am fortunate to have gotten the opportunity and is something I’ll cherish forever; I’m grateful for everyone that helped and supported me to get there.” And you can be sure, the Fairdale crew will be in full force at Expo this year and will be proud to walk the colored shavings once again. Built From The Ground Up! MISTY MEADOW DAIRY

A

t the 2018 Kash-In on Valentines Day Sale, the talk of the lineup was River Valley Excitation Flawless, the 2017 All-American Milking Yearling, who was coming off of an undefeated show season. She looked impressive in the ring and after the final bid, it was announced that she had been purchased by David Hogan of Misty Meadow Dairy in Tillamook, Oregon. More than a few people looked at each other in puzzlement - who was this new name on the scene? And not just new, but willing to bid big for the very best? Since that day, the name Misty Meadow Dairy has been affiliated with some of the finest Jersey show cattle in the nation. Though the name may not have been familiar to the crowd at that sale, it’s wellknown in the Tillamook area, as Misty Meadow Dairy milks almost 3,000 Jerseys and is a member of the world-famous, farmer-owned Tillamook County Creamery Association. The operation is owned by Dave & Rita Hogan. Their three children and their families are actively involved on the farm: Becky Heimerl, who works

on the farms’ finances and records; Matt, who manages the calves, genetic and IVF programs; and Kristin Killgore, who is head of HR, payroll and employee management. Becky and Kristin’s husbands work in the areas of manure, field and equipment management. The roots of Misty Meadow Dairy began in Orland, California where Dave Hogan grew up. The farm and herd has gone through several transitions: converting to Jerseys from 1990-1994, and growing in size when they purchased two other dairies in the area. The farm is home to a million-gallon anaerobic digester, which fuels a 750-kilowatt cogeneration engine that produces enough electricity to power more than 500 homes. The newest transition in the works is the construction of an 84-stall rotary parlor to be completed in the fall of 2021.

Though River Valley Excitation Flawless was the first show cow purchased recently by Misty Meadow Dairy, Dave

actually got the show itch twenty years ago with a Jersey cow named Just A Few Renaissance Elisa EX-94%. He bought her in October 2001 after she was Reserve Grand Champion at World Dairy Expo. She went on that fall to be Reserve Grand Champion at the Royal Winter Fair and named All-Canadian 5-Year-Old for 2001. The show bug went dormant for a couple of decades while the farm grew and changed, but with the purchase of Flawless, Dave & Rita have embarked on a new show herd venture. Flawless went on to be 1st senior 3-year-old, Intermediate and Reserve Grand Champion at the 2019 All-American Jersey Show, and was named the 2019 All-American Senior 3-Year-Old. Since then, numerous purchases have also resulted in a great deal of success in the show ring at events across North America. They had a banner day at the 2020 Western National Jersey Show when Musqie Joel Villetta EX-90% was named Grand Champion; Lone Pine Joel Jugojuice EX-93% was Reserve Grand Champion; and Esperanza GA Vivian EX-94% was Honorable Mention Grand Champion for the farm on their way to taking home the Premier Exhibitor banner. At the North American Open Jersey Show later that fall, Jugojuice and Villetta swapped positions in taking home the purple rosettes for Misty Meadow. In totaling up year-end recognition, the farm’s show string had 13 All-American nominations to lead all competitors, with four All-American and four Reserve All-American winners in the Cowsmopolitan All-American contest to wrap up the year.

The start to the 2021 show season continued with a Grand Champion rosette as South Mountain Voltage Radiant topped all comers at the California State Jersey Show, and South Mountain Fizz Chablis was named Intermediate Champion and HM Grand Champion at the show. The operation has also engaged the services of Declan Patten in Australia to help with the global marketing of embryos. The farm is dedicating time and finances to building highly marketable pedigrees and in September, they classified more than 1600 females over two days. Misty Meadow Dairy has expanded their tapestry of breeds this year. More sale topper news hit the airwaves this spring when they invested in a fancy two-year-old Ayrshire, Old-Bankston-AL Wynonna-ET, at the Quest for Franchise Sale - a new public auction record for the Ayrshire breed. Wynonna was the 2020 All-American Fall Yearling and then after calving, was the Intermediate Champion of the 2021 Ohio Spring Show and is backed by EX-94 & EX-93 national showwinning dams.

Misty Meadow added some color to herd at the Quest for Success Sale in 2021, purchasing Old-Bankston-AL Wynonna, the 2020 All-American Ayrshire Fall Yearling who was Intermediate Champion at the Ohio Spring Show.

The Hogans went back to their Holstein roots this summer with the private purchase of Ms Sid Blexy-ET, the EX-92 Sid daughter of Rosiers Blexy Goldwyn EX-97 3E, the 2017 Supreme Champion of World Dairy Expo. Sid Blexy was the HM AllAmerican Junior 3-Year-Old in 2020, and will parade in the 4-year-old cow class this fall. Her June 2021 King Doc heifer is Lot 1 in the 2021 World Classic Sale to be held at Madison, and Misty Meadow is also

selling a high genomic Got Jiggy Jersey heifer in the sale as they ramp up their marketing program. As the calendar moves into 2022, Misty Meadow is moving forward on many fronts. From the show ring to embryo marketing to the sale ring, their commitment and belief in registered dairy cattle will keep their name and prefix in the public eye for years to come! Diving into Guernseys! W

hen you’re from a family that has bred Registered Holsteins since 1927, you might think one’s fate is sealed with one breed, but for Ed Crossland, dipping a toe into the water of another dairy breed led to a full deep dive! Now, Gladheart Farm, is home not only to Holsteins, but also the very highestcaliber Guernseys. A number of years ago, Ed was becoming intrigued by the fawn and white cows, and what he perceived as their valuable role in the future US dairy industry. “I was involved in the milk cooperative business for a time, and could see a trend forming towards the use of higher component milk, and also the benefits and acceptance of A2A2 milk. A friend of mine who is a dietician had sampled some A2A2 ice cream at a nutrition conference - the first ice cream she was able to tolerate and enjoy in many years - and I knew there was something to this A2A2 thing. A very high percentage of Guernseys produce A2A2 milk, so I began to look more closely at the breed,” recalls Ed. He had long admired Berneta Gable and her family’s Snider Homestead Guernsey herd in nearby Pennsylvania. About five years ago, he asked her which was the best Guernsey cow she had seen recently. She had just judged the Canadian National Show and told him about a cow at Maplehurst Farm in Ontario. With the help of Brent Clements, Ed was able to purchase Maplehurst Les 48 « COWSMOPOLITAN Fall 2021

Marzipan EX-94, the Grand Champion of the 2016 Canadian National Guernsey Show. Brent also located another cow, Golden I Sunrise Leora EX-90 from Neil Jensen in Wisconsin, and those two cows became the foundation of Ed’s entry into the Guernsey business. That business now consists of a small Guernsey herd at his farm in Midland, Maryland located in the western part of the state. The herd is primarily managed by Madison Fisher, as Ed is an elected probate judge and also serves as a mediator and arbitrator in civil cases in western Maryland. The milk from the small 10-cow herd is processed by a local cheese plant, where it is made into the farm-branded Lancashire cheese. After some aging, it has a texture similar to cheddar and grills up very nicely, so they are marketing it to restaurants as a primary ingredient in gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches. The Ten Cow Cafe is also taking shape, which will be a coffee / dairy shop and ice cream parlor in Midland that will feature Maryland-made items as well as their own processed products. After buying Leora and Marzipan and starting an extensive flush program with them, Ed was somewhat frustrated with the small number of Guernsey bulls being collected, and that one stud was phasing out

their Guernsey program altogether. Upon some deliberation, he decided to establish Masterpiece Genetics, a Guernsey sire ‘boutique’ of sorts. “After discussing this with some well regarded folks in the the breed - Berneta Gable, Brent Clements, Kevin Stoltzfus and Chris Lang - I became concerned that the breed was in trouble without a better selection of bulls. So in 2020, I decided to market semen from three bulls I bred or purchased, and Kevin Stoltzfus at Warwick Manor had a battery of several young bulls he allowed me to choose from. The name Masterpiece Genetics recognizes that breeding is as much an art as a science. Plus, my wife, PJ, is an art teacher and artist, and when she names your bulls “Leonardo” and “Michelangelo” what other name could I use,” laughs Ed. From its inception, Ed determined that the participating bulls would be selected primarily by breeder recommendation

We want bulls that transmit moderate stature, wide strong front-ended cows with plenty of capacity to turn forage to milk from well attached udders. Feet and legs are very important and are improving quickly within the breed. Extreme dairyness without strength leads to problems with longevity, fertility and livability and we are careful to avoid bulls that would breed this extreme,” he elaborates. He acknowledges the value of genomics in this modern era of mating dairy cattle, but he expresses caution about adapting a ‘one number suits all’ philosophy for the small stud. “Our use of genomics in the selection of bulls is limited, but not disregarded. Genomic testing for certain traits such as the A2 and polled genes, or undesirable recessives is a wonderful tool, but with such a small population of Guernseys, young sire genomic proofs the reliability is only around 50%. Currently, if you look at the most recent proofs, our bulls have some of the highest numbers in the breed in certain categories, including the top

Our sales are increasing each month and our export sales, particularly to Canada and Australia are strong. Several breeders of other breeds have reached out to us to consider adding bulls, but for now we are going to continue to concentrate on the Guernseys until we make a decision about future growth, which will necessitate bringing on a full-time manager for Masterpiece.”

“As to the future of Masterpiece, we have some exciting young bulls coming along and have virtually sold out of all sexed semen. Virtually every well-known cow in the breed will have a son coming to Masterpiece in the next year or so, which is very exciting and I am quite humbled by the outpouring of support from the breeders. We will probably collect less conventional but make more sexed semen as those sales, particularly with Michelangelo have been difficult to keep up with. We are assembling a diverse group of committed and knowledgeable breeders to serve in an advisory role in selecting bulls and matings. Given the number of great cows of the breed that have been flushed or bred to our bulls, we anticipate hosting an online sale this winter featuring choices and embryos from these cows and our bulls,” enthuses Ed. ompiling a list of the top Red and White Holsteins that Richard Green of Greenlea Holsteins, Middletown, Delaware bred or owned is no simple task. High-quality Holsteins using the Greenlea prefix have been registered by Richard and his father George L. Green since the 1960s. During his sophomore year of college, his father became ill, and Richard did all the dairy chores while attending classes. His father decided to sell the cows so that Richard could pursue an education. Following graduation from the University of Delaware Richard worked at his alma mater Middletown High School as a librarian, teacher, athletic director and coach of numerous sports including track, cross country and baseball. Richard retained his interest in dairy farming and after retirement from his career as an educator, he became one of the most prestigious breeders of Red and White Holstein cattle in the world, winning numerous Premier Exhibitor and Breeder banners at World Dairy Expo. He started showing Red and White Holsteins in 1997, and eventually exhibited four Grand Champions at the Red and White Show at World Dairy Expo with four different cows. Richard twice had the Reserve Grand Champion, several Junior Champions, and 56 class winners that he bred or owned. Even today the “Greenlea” farm prefix is in the pedigree of many of the top individuals around the world.

Richard made his first purchases of Red and White cattle in the 1990s. He was impressed by Stookey Elm Park Blackrose *RC EX-96-3E GMD DOM and purchased her Kinglea Leader *RC VG daughter, Miss Leader Redrose-Red-ET EX-90. Redrose made a top record of 4-04 365d 33,970 3.8 1285 3.1 1070. She had several outstanding daughters including Greenlea Rose-Red-ET EX-91 sired by STBVQ Rubens *RC. Richard felt that Blackrose offered a sure source of quality. He felt that her son Indianhead RedMarker *RC sired large and coarse dairy cows with a wide muzzle and wide chest. He often combined Rubens and RedMarker bloodlines with great success.

One of Richard’s Holstein friends was Robert Yeoman of Bar-Lee Holsteins in Oklahoma, whom he spoke to on a daily basis. It was from the Bar-Lee herd that he purchased Bar-Lee MS Marcy-Red EX-92 by Brooknook Milestone-Red-ET. Marcy was All-American R & W Sr. 2-Year-Old and Res. All-American R & W 5-Year-Old. He also owned Marcy’s Red-Marker daughter Bar-Lee Marker Mandy-Red-ET EX-94-3E who was All-American R & W Sr. 2-Year-Old, Res. All-American R & W Sr. 3-Year-Old and All-American R & W 5-YearOld. She was also 2003 Reserve Grand Champion at the Grand International R & W Show. Mandy had several Very Good and Excellent daughters including Greenlea Mindy-Red EX-94-2E and Greenlea Rub Marlene-Red-ET EX-94 by

The list of cows Richard Green bred and developed could go on and on. Open any sale catalog today, and odds are that a number of the red & white consignment trace back to cows he bred or owned. He made careful matings, had a successful embryo transfer program, and marketed a great number of embryos. He also had seven sales called the Greenlea Dream Invitational Sale from 2004 to 2010 where he sold individuals and embryos from his outstanding herd and others. He had his animals housed at various farms in the USA and Canada and hired some of the top show people to exhibit his show string. He also sampled a few bulls from his top cows. The slogan he used to promote his herd was “For the Very Best in Red…Go Green!” It is obvious that Richard had an eye for good cattle and a talent for matching cows with bulls with excellent results. His passion for the Red and White cow benefited the breed greatly. Richard M. Green, Sr., 83 of Middletown, DE died peacefully at home on Saturday, July 31, 2021 after a long battle with Parkinson’s Disease. EPOCH MAKING PRODUCTION CHAMPIONS – 1880 TO 1935 By E.Y. Morwick [The second in a series looking back at purebred dairy production champions that helped shape the early days of their breeds in North America. For part one, please see the Late Spring 2021 issue of Cowsmopolitan!] 9. DOLLY DIMPLE Dolly Dimple, a Guernsey, was sired by Imp. Yeoman, the son of Hayes Rosie already referred to. Her dam was Dolly Bloom who had a record of 17,298 lbs. milk, 836 lbs. butterfat. Dolly Dimple was bred and owned by Langwater Farms of North Easton, MA. As a 2-year-old in a record that was started in 1910, Dolly Dimple made a record of 14,009 lbs. milk, 703 lbs. butter. Tested as a three-year-old, she closed with a record of 18,459 lbs. milk and 907 lbs. butterfat. Then as a five-year- old she produced 18,809 lbs. milk and 876 lbs. butterfat, the highest milk and butterfat records of a Guernsey cow to that time. By her three successive records, Dolly was credited as being the greatest longdistance dairy cow in the world under Advanced Register supervision.

tests, exceeded only by the American record of 14.67 lbs. butter made in 1904 by Pontiac Rag Apple. As a two-year-old, Jenny Bonerges Ormsby in a full year produced 833 lbs. fat and 16,849 lbs. milk, a world’s record for both milk and butter. In her long and productive lifetime Jenny completed five more 30-lb. butter records on seven-day test. These full-pail attainments led Bill Prescott, associate editor for the HolsteinFriesian World, to call her “one of the dairy queens not only in Canada but in the entire Holstein world.” Prescott could not comprehend how an animal with Jenny’s lackluster pedigree could be so prolific at the pail. Prescott, had he done a little more research, would have discovered that Jenny’s sire, Sir Admiral Ormsby, was a son of Duchess Ormsby Butter King who had several daughters above 1,000 lbs. fat. His dam, Duchess Ormsby, was the first cow to bear the Ormsby name, while his sire, Piebe DeKol Burke, was the best son of DeKol Burke, Helena Burke’s famous son. The “Piebe” bull was sired by DeKol 2d’s Butter Boy, the son of DeKol 2d and Sir Abbekerk. Jenny Bonerges Ormsby was bred by that Holstein pioneer Joseph Fletcher, Oxford Mills, ON, and was born in 1907 in the barn of Charles Robinson, South Mountain, ON. 11. AUCHENBRAIN BROWN KATE 4TH

DOLLY DIMPLE Tested as a 5-year-old, she produced 18,809 lbs. milk and 876 lbs. butter, records for a Guernsey cow to that time. Owned by F. Lothrop Ames, Langwater Farm, North Easton, MA.

Auchenbrain Brown Kate 4th reigned as the world’s Ayrshire production champion through the early 1900’s, having produced 23,022 lbs. milk and

917.6 lbs. butter on yearly test. The exact year she finished her lactation – some say it was 1911, has been lost in the mists of time. What is known is that her owner was Percival Roberts, Jr., Penshurst Farm, Bryn Mawr, PA, and she was the centre of his breeding program. Brown Kate’s sire was St. Simon of Auchenbrain, well-known as a sire of productive daughters. Her dam, Yellow Kate of Auchenbrain, had another fruitful daughter, Auchenbrain Yellow Kate 3rd whose mature record was 21,123 lbs. milk, 881 lbs. fat, average test 4.21%. Mr. Roberts’ Penshurst Farm was the birthplace and proving ground of Penshurst Man-O-War whose 1940’s proof showed 167 daughters with an average of 9,360M 4.14% 389F, mature equivalent, 2X, 305 days. As the sire of 19 sons designated Approved by the Ayrshire Association, and as the sire of 2,000 grandsons in service, the influence of this bull was significant. Penshurst Man-OWar traced to Auchenbrain Brown Kate 4th on both sides of his pedigree, most of those connections coming through Kate’s Champion of Penshurst, her son. 12. JEAN ARMOUR Jean Armour 25487 (A.R. 635) was born in 1901 in the herd of her breeders, H. & J. McKee, Norwich, Ontario. In a lactation she commenced as an 11-year-old “Jean” produced 20,174 lbs. milk and 912 lbs. butter, the equivalent of 775 lbs. fat. She came back at age 14 years to pump out 18,382 lbs. milk and 843 lbs. butter (716

Flatt & Son, Millgrove, Ontario, first freshened at 2 years 9 months and on official test produced 19.51 lbs. butter and 457 lbs. milk in seven days. Continued on year test, eight months after freshening she produced 14.39 lbs. butter and 274.6 lbs. milk in seven days, winning her first Canadian championship. Her dam, Sarah 2nd, was a daughter of Royal Chief of Brookside 11798. In 1915 Messrs. McKee did something that in retrospect seems almost unthinkable, although they may have had good reasons. They dropped their champion into an auction sale. From the catalogue: “Owner’s Statement – In putting Jean Armour under the hammer in a public auction sale, we believe that we are offering the greatest cow that has ever been led into an auction ring in this or any other country. This beautiful specimen of the Ayrshire breed is in perfect physical condition, and has many years of usefulness and profit before her. Her teeth do not show the slightest sign of decay and this, combined with her huge frame and wonderful constitution, go to prove that there are a great many years of high production still in this grand cow.” No record remains as to the price she brought or who bought her. One of the cows who traced her descent to both Brown Kate and Jean was Springburn Lucky Girl, a Canadian champion for lifetime production. She gave 104,013 lbs. milk, 4,368 lbs. fat in 10 consecutive lactations. 13. SUNBEAM OF EDGELEY James Bagg came to Canada with his parents and sister in 1871. In 1880, now married with a young family, James settled in the village of Edgeley, County of York, where he established his Edgeley Jersey herd. He ventured to the Brampton Farms of B.H. Bull where in 1908 he purchased an animal he registered as Sunbeam of Edgeley. She was a daughter of Brampton King Edward and Daisy of Brampton, the latter an influential matron in the Bull herd. As a seven-year-old Sunbeam produced 18,744 lbs. milk and 926 lbs. fat in 365 days which at that time was the highest Jersey record ever made in the British Empire. Bagg, on several occasions, entered his cow at the dairy tests conducted at the Guelph Winter Fair. In 1914 Sunbeam came away with the trophy for the highest producer over all breeds in the three days of the fair.

Sunbeam’s great-granddaughter, Betty’s Bright Fern, was grand champion at the Canadian National Exhibition in 1945 then was sold to Orange Blossom Jerseys in California where, re-registered as Brampton Jester Betty, she classified Excellent and produced up to 999 lbs. fat. 14. BANOSTINE BELLE DEKOL Banostine Belle DeKol was the first cow, regardless of breed, to produce 1,300 lbs. butter (1,040 lbs. fat) in a year. Her record, completed in the herd of Dan Dimmick & Bro., East Claridon, Ohio, in 1912, was 1,058 lbs. fat and 27,404 lbs. milk. Belle’s conformation, the feature of which was a tight udder, was of a piece with her productive capabilities. And she came not by accident. She was fathered by Friend Hengerveld DeKol Butter Boy, the Dimmick herd sire who had plenty of “oomph” in his genes. He was sired by DeKol 2d’s Butter Boy 3d, a son of DeKol 2d and Manor DeKol. Sire of the latter was DeKol 2d’s Netherland, another DeKol 2d son. This double dose of DeKol 2d’s blood would almost guarantee high production. Friend Hengerveld DeKol Butter Boy had three daughters with records above 1,200 lbs. butter and four above 1,000 lbs. (800 lbs. fat) and was the first bull to consistently transmit at this level. Maplecrest DeKol Champion, Belle’s full brother, came to Canada courtesy of Laidlaw Bros. and George Van Patter, Aylmer, Ontario. One of his many good daughters, Queen Calamity Ormsby, was born in 1917 on the Laidlaw farm. In the herd of Eugene Sweet, Belmont, she was the third cow in Canada to produce above 40 lbs. butter, producing 40.04 lbs. butter on seven-day test in 1923. Sir Ormsby Banostine Fayne, Queen’s son by Sir Romeo Fayne, sired Lonelm Dora, dam of Lonelm Texal Fayne, key sire in the Texal line.

The new champion was a product of that old reliable cross, a daughter of Pontiac Korndyke from a Hengerveld DeKol dam. She transmitted principally through King Segis Pontiac, her King Segis son, whose accomplishments as a positive breed influence are too long to recount in an essay of this nature. One of his best sons was King Segis Pontiac Alcartra, out of K.P. Alcartra, a King of the Pontiacs daughter, the King Segis Pontiac/King of the Pontiacs cross being particularly reliable. King Segis Pontiac Alcartra topped the Breeders’ Consignment Sale in 1911, selling to John Arfmann, Middletown, N.Y. A few years later Arfmann sold a half-interest in the bull to Lawson Holding Co., La Grangeville, N.Y. for $25,000.00. Thereafter, King Segis Pontiac Alcartra became known far and wide as “the $50,000 bull”. King Segis Pontiac Alcartra was sire of King Segis Alcartra Prilly, Pabst Farms’ first Gold Medal sire. Another good son, and his most influential, was King Segis Alcartra Calamity, whose daughter, Colantha Alcartra Acme, was dam of King Toitilla Acme (Extra), sire of the All-American get of sire in 1937. The two strongest factors in the creation of the Canadian bloodline were King Toitilla Acme and Johanna Rag Apple Pabst. The latter likewise owed a debt to Pontiac Clothilde DeKol 2d and to Dutchland Sir Pontiac Rag Apple, her full brother. J.R.A.P. was a great-grandson of both animals. 16. TILLY ALCARTRA In the herd of A.W. Morris & Sons, Woodland, California, Tilly Alcartra produced 30,453 lbs. milk, which was the first 30,000-lb. record made on official test. She displaced Pietertje 2d’s previous world’s record of 30,318 lbs. which had stood since 1888. Tilly Alcartra was later the Holstein breed’s first 33,000-lb. cow, the first with two records above 30,000 lbs., and the breed’s first 200,000-lb. cow in lifetime production.

15. PONTIAC CLOTHILDE DEKOL 2D The next cow on the Holstein production roster and one of the most influential was Pontiac Clothilde DeKol 2d, who in 1912 took her place as the first cow of any breed to produce over 1,000 lbs. fat on yearly test. Her record, which she commenced at six years of age in the herd of Stevens Bros., Liverpool, N.Y., was 25,318 lbs. milk and 1,017 lbs. fat. On April 23, 1924, Tilly Alcartra was slaughtered after a foot and mouth disease outbreak in the herd of Fred Hartsook, Lankershim, California. She was there for service to Sir Pietertje Ormsby Mercedes 37th. The entire Hartsook herd, consisting of 300 animals, which was considered one of the most valuable herds in the world, had to be destroyed. Tilly’s demise deprived her of any breed enhancing possibilities. Had she produced a son by Sir Pietertje Ormsby Mercedes 37th, imagine his potential. 17. FINDERNE PRIDE JOHANNA RUE Finderne Pride Johanna Rue was the breed’s first cow above 1,120 lbs. fat on yearly test. Her record at five years was 1,471 lbs. butter (equivalent of 1,176 lbs. fat) from 28,403 lbs. milk. Bred and tested in the herd of Bernhard Meyer, Finderne, N.J., her sire was the Finderne Farms herd sire, Johanna Rue 3d’s Lad, one of the great bulls of the past. Bred by W.J. Gillett, he was a son of Sarcastic Lad from Gillett’s Johanna family. His dam, Johanna Rue 3d, was a product of that stalwart maternal line that went back to Johanna 344 H.H.B.: Johanna Rue 3d,

Johanna Rue, Johanna 5th and Johanna. In her maternal line, Finderne Pride Johanna Rue traced directly to Ondine 828 H.H.B., the Gerrit Miller cow who also anchored the maternal line of Round Oak Rag Apple Elevation. 18. FINDERNE HOLINGEN FAYNE “The impossible has been accomplished,” was the lead sentence in the feature story of the April 10, 1915 Holstein-Friesian World. Finderne Holingen Fayne, milking as a junior 3-year-old, had just won the world’s championship for yearly butter production over all ages and breeds, having produced 24,613 lbs. milk, 1,116 lbs. fat, 4.53% in 365 days. She was bred by Bernhard Meyer and made her record under the ownership and management of Edward F. Meyer, Bernhard’s “son and right hand man”. The new champion’s sire, King Hengerveld Aaggie Fayne, built a magnificent proof in the Finderne herd. His long list of hightesting daughters included eleven from 30 to 37 lbs. butter on seven-day test. Another daughter, Finderne Mutual Fayne, in a record she commenced at 27 months of age, produced 22,150 lbs. milk and

1,200 lbs. butter, a world’s record when made. She came back as a three-year-old to produce 37.34 lbs. butter, her second world’s record. King Hengerveld Aaggie Fayne was a son of King Fayne Segis, one of the best King Segis sons. Grace Fayne 2d’s Homestead, dam of King Fayne Segis, was the Homestead Junior DeKol daughter whose record of 35.55 lbs. butter as a six-yearold in 1909 beat Colantha 4th’s Johanna’s performance of two years earlier. Dam of King Hengerveld Aaggie Fayne, sire of the new champion, was Bloomingdale Hengerveld Aaggie, a daughter of Hengerveld DeKol whose dam was a Johanna Rue 3d’s Lad daughter. Mutual Holingen Finderne, the new champion’s dam, was a granddaughter of Paul DeKol, the high impact son of Pauline Paul. Her family went back to the Mutual Friend family. Finderne Holingen Fayne’s record was broken nine months later by Duchess Skylark Ormsby, owned by John B. Irwin, Minneapolis, Minnesota who, milking as a 5-year-old, produced 27,761 lbs. milk, 1,205 lbs. fat, a world’s butter record that brought new attention to the Ormsby line.

Tango is no stranger to the show ring, in 2019, she was named the Grand Champion of the All American Brown Swiss Show and the Southeastern National Brown Swiss Show.
