CRS Dive: Imposter Syndrome
(continued from page 1) “That doesn’t mean we are frauds!” She recommends reframing internal thoughts, because “from your beliefs go your thoughts, and those thoughts turn into feelings that then become behaviors. So, in therapy, one thing we do is challenge some of the underlying core beliefs that have led to feelings of unworthiness or a need for perfection.”
Imposter Syndrome can also present as workaholism, burnout, feelings of shame or unworthiness, falling into a comparison trap, procrastination and self-sabotage. “It’s important to normalize discussing these feelings and understand that Imposter Syndrome is experienced on a spectrum,” says Kelley. If symptoms are occasional or situational – as during career- or life-changes – and do not interfere with daily functions, Kelley advises identifying feelings and working through them in the moment. “Talk to a mentor or get support from friends who can help you feel validated,” she suggests. “If you’re feeling any symptoms of Imposter Syndrome and not discussing them, they can compound and begin to feel increasingly overwhelming.” Lorino offered CRS attendees a favorite personal tip for combatting feelings of low self-esteem or unworthiness, explaining, “Any time I receive compliments via email, text or social media, I take screen shots. I keep those photos in a separate album, titled ‘Praise,’ on my phone, and on particularly low days or when I am doubting my own abilities, I go back to those notes and read through them.”
Chronic symptoms can also heighten other forms of anxiety. “If you’ve had a lifetime struggle with self-esteem or have grown up in a household with people being critical of you, this can also play a role in extensive battles with Imposter Syndrome,” says Kelley. “If it is interfering with your ability to function or becomes difficult to handle on your own or by speaking with friends and family, I recommend seeking out therapy. There are tools that could make things much easier to work through.” LeMaitre recommends everyone “assess what is working best” to improve mental health then continue tailoring the approach on a regular basis. Lorino offers, “Confidence comes in being willing to try.” Depending upon the manifestation of symptoms and their severity, ways to combat the feelings can include mediation, yoga, deep breathing exercises, clinical therapy and prescription anxiety medications.
Kelley reminds, “Our brains are built to have a negativity bias; they look for problems to solve. But we must train ourselves to look at what is working – what we’re grateful for – and learn to have more of a gratitude mentality. Treat yourself like your own best friend, because we all know how to treat friends.” She points to radio as an industry with constant critique in the form of aircheck sessions for on-air talent. Kelley notes the longer creatives work in a space of criticism, the easier it becomes to internalize the voices of negativity and dismiss any words of validation and praise. But, says Kelley, “Just because it’s a feeling doesn’t make it a fact.”

March 2022 PPM Scoreboard
Country shares increased for the third consecutive month with the March 2022 PPM Book (3/3/22-3/30/22). More than half of PPM stations saw share increases as total format share rose 2.6% from 336.1 to 344.9. That number is off slightly from last March’s 349.7. Total cume of all stations was up 5.0% to 23,138,000, though that figure is off 8.7% from one year ago. WUSN/Chicago maintained the format’s largest cume, while KRTY/San Jose claimed the format’s largest share for the first time ever. Legend: A “+” indicates a Classic Country outlet; a “^” designates co-owned Country stations in the metro; a “t” indicates a tie; and a “*” indicates a station that is a recent subscriber for which ratings were not currently available. Ranks are among subscribers.

New CouNtry AirCheCk/MediAbAse reporter weights
These are the new weights for Country Aircheck/Mediabase Country Reporters for both the Published and the Activator panels, based on audience figures from Nielsen. Weights for stations in PPM markets use a three-month average of September-October-November 2021 AQH Persons. The Fall 2021 AQH Persons figure is used for diary markets. The weights are calculated using this formula: Market rank is multiplied by 10 and then added to the station’s AQH Persons. A station’s weight is determined by dividing that adjusted AQH by the leading Country station’s adjusted AQH. For this period, that station is WKLB/Boston with an adjusted AQH of 16,700. For Activator weights, that station is WFRG/Utica-Rome, NY with an adjusted AQH of 6,410. Station Weight = (Market rank X 10) divided by 16,700 (6,410 for Activator stations.) These new weights are effective with this week’s Country Aircheck/Mediabase Country chart.
Also, stations that do not subscribe to Nielsen have been assigned a weight of 1.0 since it is not possible to calculate a weight without an AQHP number to enter into the formula. This is a temporary situation.
