CRHoF 2023: Inductees React

This year’s Country Radio Hall of Fame inductees share their initial thoughts:

• Charlie Morgan: Apple Music’s Head/Programming has a long history in Country radio, including leadership roles for then-Emmis/New York and Indianapolis. He is quite familiar with the process leading to this honor. “I’ve served on that selection committee before, and I’m still a member of the CRB Executive Committee,” he says. “So, when I was told we were having a team call to ratify the CRHoF induction slate and handle other CRB/CRS business, I assumed I was not on this year’s slate.” To his surprise, the entire Exec. Committee told him of his induction, with longtime friend and former colleague Bob Richards personally delivering the news. “Because I know what it takes to make it to this point – the hours of debate and how many worthy candidates there are each year –it means so much.” He hasn’t started planning his speech, but he does have an idea for walkup music. “I don’t want to say what it is yet, but there’s a song I love so much that any time my daughter hears it out somewhere, she texts me,” Morgan says.

•Trish Biondo: Her more than 27 years at WUSN/Chicago included on-air personality, MD, Dir./Promotions and Dir./Research roles. “I was just happy to be working in a career I love with music I love in my hometown,” Biondo says. “Never in my wildest dreams did I think of it as building a Hall of Fame worthy résumé.” Ever the show prep master, Biondo spent hours preparing for a Zoom call with Country Aircheck’s Chuck Aly focused on Chicago radio history. “I also made sure I looked nice for the call, in case Chuck wanted to take a screen shot for his story,” she laughs.

The 54th Country Radio Seminar is well underway and, as President of the CRB Board, Townsquare’s Kurt Johnson has a deep understanding of and wide perspective on the event and its future.

CA: What do you want attendees to know about the work being done to shape this and future seminars?

KJ: As with every year since 1970, the CRB staff and board have collaborated to balance

the event with learning, networking opportunities, live music… and more fun than anyone should be allowed to have. Exec. Dir. RJ Curtis and the team work hard to make sure the event is fun, safe and comfortable for all the attendees. The work on this year’s CRS started just days after last year’s event, and the thoughtful planning will make for a rich, memorable experience for all.

As for the future, the ocean of data we now swim through makes CRS more relevant every year. Not just in terms of understanding what it all means, but in reinforcing a sense of community. Yes, we’ve all got screens in front of us, but let’s never forget that the most powerful part of music and entertainment is the human factor: It starts with a small circle of supporters around an artist. That grows to encompass their champions at a record label ... then radio, streamers and media, and the circle grows. In a disconnected digital world, the power of that passionate testimonial from labels and Country radio is greater than ever.

What is the role of CRS in today’s radio/media/music biz landscape?

To RJ, the staff and the board, country music has never been a zero-sum game. Going back decades, the people who led this business and format have embraced the belief in working together to advance our common goal of reaching the most people possible. Sure, we see ourselves as competitors – stations, streamers, satellite – but all of us have historically had a clear-eyed vision for the long-term health and growth of country music in the marketplace, the culture and around

the world. CRS is arguably – inarguably, in my view – the hub for the conversations that propel this nationwide country music community forward.

What can you tell us about future plans/discussions the board is having?

Everyone involved in the strategy, planning and execution has a firm sense of two things: How to respect and carry on the treasured history of our business, and how to embrace its future, or as Wayne Gretzky said, “Skate to where the puck is going, not where it’s been.” Our Digital Summit is a great example. We developed this opportunity for digital professionals to learn and network and for radio pros to develop new skills and understanding to better attract consumers. Watch for more new ideas as our beloved business continues to expand and evolve.

Will the Digital Music Summit grow or be further integrated into the event?

It has grown every year, and we’re proud of that. Will it continue? Honest answer, I don’t know. If more attendees come because of it, and if our attendees tell us it’s great, we’ll build on it. We definitely refine it with each iteration, as we do with every element of CRS. We have a board comprised of very bright people from many facets of the industry – go look at the list. Will we get it right all the time? Is that possible? No. But I assure you, we are having these kinds of deep discussions regularly – diligently and conscientiously working to carry forward what prior generations built. And we’re very open to input. Come find us.

Final thoughts?

Just a reminder to everyone to remember how fortunate we all are to be privy to and part of this thing called Country – the most sustainable, enduring format over decades, and the mostprogrammed format in all of radio. We don’t believe that’s been accomplished by compartmentalizing information. The objective

is to keep growing the category, and this is what we’ll continue to evangelize at CRS. The ongoing conversation continues this week. And, let’s not forget to have a little fun, too! –Chuck Aly

Chart Chat

James McNair and Combs.

Kudos to Kris Lamb and the Big Machine crew on racking up 119 adds for Tim McGraw’s “Standing Room Only.” This is the fourth release from McGraw in the last four years to reach triple-digit adds, and the first triple-digit add week for any release since last June (Combs’ “The Kind Of Love We Make”).

Effective with the airplay week ending March 25, and reflected on the chart of March 27, seven stations have been added to the CA Activator Chart panel. They are KBVB/Fargo, ND; KRRG/ Laredo, TX; KZPK/St. Cloud, MN; WBFM/Sheboygan, MI; WILQ/Williamsport, PA; WTVY/Dothan, AL and WXFL/ Florence, AL. Additionally, the entire Activator panel will now be monitored, though stations will still report adds.

Luke Combs

Congratulations to Luke Combs, Steve Hodges, Lauren Thomas and the Columbia promotion team on landing at No. 1 with “Going, Going, Gone.” This is Combs’ 15th No. 1 out of 15 singles, extending his record for most consecutive No. 1s to start an artist’s career. That total also puts Combs in third place for longest streak of consecutive No. 1s in chart history. Combs first debuted on the chart 327 weeks ago in December 2016, which makes this the fourth-fastest any artist has accumulated 15 No. 1s, behind only Alabama, Alan Jackson and Garth Brooks. Songwriters are Ray Fulcher,

When Lon Helton joined, Biondo thought he would tell her she hadn’t made the CRHoF cut. “I thought we were supposed to find out in January, so I assumed I hadn’t made it,” she says. Upon hearing the news, Biondo became emotional. She has been waiting to tell her children, for fear they may let something slip on social media, but now that the news is public, Biondo is excited to recruit her daughter for outfit recommendations.

•“Dollar Bill” Lawson: After 50 years in radio, WDXB/ Birmingham morning host Lawson can’t imagine a better way to cap his career. “It’s going to sound kind of sappy, but it’s the honest-to-God truth,” he says. “I never saw it coming. You couldn’t have a higher honor.” Speaking of not seeing it coming, Lawson was surprised with the news by his friend of 30 years, Tom Hanrahan. “I couldn’t even talk … it is one of the few times in my life I was speechless,” he laughs. Over the course of his career, Lawson learned the job’s biggest perk wasn’t helping himself. “As I went through phases of my life, certain things became more important and other things faded away,” he reflects. “I started doing a lot of charity work and it gave me the fulfillment I needed to really enjoy and appreciate the job I was doing.” Having spent his entire career in one market, Lawson is an anomaly. “I always worked hard at being a Country music DJ, and I love the genre,” he says. “I never wanted to go anywhere else.”

•John Willyard: Heard on countless Country stations, among other projects, Willyard is breaking new CRHoF ground.

“As far as I know, I’m the first imaging voice to ever be inducted,” he says. Earlier this month, CRB Exec. Dir. RJ Curtis asked to interview Willyard about past CRS experiences. “I did a lot of homework,” confesses Willyard. “I listed my favorite CRS luncheon shows, my favorite Sony boat shows, even my favorite keynote addresses. Suddenly, my good friend [WKKT/ Charlotte PD] Shelly Easton entered to give me the news.” Willyard didn’t take much time to soak in the news. “I stayed in a daze, but I had too much going on,” he says. “I had to keep my nose to the grindstone and keep turning out the work, which I love.” Even with induction in his near future, don’t expect Willyard to hang up the headphones. “People ask me about retirement, and I say, ‘no way.’ My hero for longevity in this business is Johnny Gilbert, the guy who says, ‘This is Jeopardy!’ every weeknight. He’ll be 95 this summer.”

• Pam Green : As APD/MD at WHNAM/New York during most of its 14-year existence, Green was not only the first female major market MD but one of the most influential MDs in Country radio history. “RJ Curtis and Joel Raab really pulled a fast one,” Green admits. Curtis emailed her under the pretense of researching CRS history. “I got on the call, and there was Joel,” she says. “I didn’t think anything, because we share a lot of the same CRS memories. Then Joel gave me some nice compliments and said I was going into the Hall.” Green never

expected the honor. “I worked hard and kept my head down,” she says. “I didn’t even think about it, but when you see inductee interviews every year in Country Aircheck, you think, ‘That would be nice some day.’” The news came with one big downside. “It’s definitely been the hardest secret I’ve ever had to keep,” she says. “I’ve made a list of the people I want to call and thank after the announcement.”

•Wade Jessen: The late Jessen landed his first radio job in 1978, joining KNEU-AM/Roosevelt, UT at just 16 years old, worked at KSOP/Salt Lake City, moved to WSM-AM/Nashville and eventually oversaw Billboard’s Country, Bluegrass, Christian and Gospel charts. Spouse Corey Jones says Jessen would “acknowledge his uncle, Fred Brown, for providing him with mentorship and that early start in Country radio. He loved twang and was ever-curious about the singers and musicians, their influences and their origins. Listening to or discussing music with Wade ensured being the recipient of biographies of the artists.” Jessen continued as an on-air personality, covering the night shift on SiriusXM’s Willie’s Roadhouse until his passing (CAT 3/5/15). “Acknowledgement of his success, longevity and devotedness to the field of Country radio means more than we could ever put into words,” Jones says on behalf of those closest to Jessen, including sisters Jesse Walker, Beckey McConkie and Gina Stevenson. “To those who supported his nomination and found him worthy of this honor, we simply say, ‘Thank you.’”
