displayed until the customer reached home. * Allan Clarke, chief constable, reminded citizens that serving liquor at office parties was against the law and his officers would enforce the law. Ya. In those days, one of the best office parties was at 44 Pit St., The Standard-Freeholder, next door to the Crown attorney’s office. One year the guest of honour was the Crown attorney of the day, known to enjoy a hot toddy now and then, along with a couple of off-duty police officers. * For folks who didn’t want to cook a meal on Christmas Day, 1955, The Chicken Palace, 107 Pitt St., said it would open at 4 p.m. for turkey dinner with all the trimmings. * The Capitol Theatre was open in the afternoon on Christmas Day. The annual Christmas Day show was “Artists and Models” with Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis. The Christmas Day show always had a family theme, along the lines of Ma and Pa Kettle. TRIVIA ANSWER A & P store re-located to Sydney and Eighth streets from Pitt Street. Manager was Harold Smith. The building is now Farm Boy. (We said it moved in 1967. Not so. The new store opened in 1960). TRIVIA June 2, 1953 was proclaimed a civic holiday in Cornwall. In his proclamation, Mayor Aaron Horovitz urged residents to decorate their homes and places of business as part of the celebration. What was the event which was being celebrated across Canada?

Mani, pedi, facial, massage, IPL laser hair reduction, rejuvenation, spa packages, hair colour & styles, overnight stay and more.

* MacKillican’s Dairy -owned and operated by John Wensink and Doug MacGillivray -notified its customers in Apple Hill, Moose Creek and Maxville there would be no milk delivery on Dec. 26. * Cornwall’s seven dairies -Phillip’s, Eastside, Canadian, Daisy Dairy, Maple Crest, Rivermead and Cameron’s -would not have home delivery on Dec. 26. * Plenty of last-minute Christmas gift ideas. Lawn’s Smoke Shop, Pitt and First streets, had Ronson, Presto and Zippo lighters for dad, along with tobacco pouches and ash trays. Julius Miller suggested a cedar chest for the woman of the house. Menard Furniture, 245 Prince Arthur, had 21-inch (black and white of course) console model TVs for $299.95. * To accommodate the Christmas rush, the Cornwall Post Office hired 35 people to help sort and deliver the mail. Beginning two weeks before Christmas, city homes received twice-a-day delivery, Saturdays included. * Busiest place on Dec. 24 was probably the two LCBO outlets ... Pitt Street and Montreal Road. By noon on Dec. 24 long lines overwhelmed the outlets. A police officer was assigned to help with crowd control. This was the day when the booze was kept in a backroom. Customers had to fill out their order and take it to the counter. The liquor store employee would disappear to the back room and return with the bottle(s) that would be placed in a plain brown paper bag, not to be

As a kid, one of the best things about belonging to the Howard Smith Paper Mill family was the annual Children’s Christmas Party at Cornwall Armoury. As usual, the party two weeks before Christmas 1955 had 2,300 pumped-up kids. After watching a magician brought in from Montreal and two or three singing acts, the big moment arrived. With the master of ceremonies whipping the kids into a frenzy and urging them to sing another chorus of “Here Comes Santa” louder than the previous three, he would say, “Oh ... I hear sleigh bells. I think ...” That’s when the big garage door on the west side would roll up. In came a red convertible with the man himself, Santa, sitting on the back seat, waving and shouting “Ho, Ho, Ho.” The place would go nuts. The whole thing ended with every kid - all 2,300 - getting a stocking filled with assorted candy and a gift. Some other sights and sounds of Christmas season circa 1955, much different from today: * The annual Children’s Christmas Concert in the Cornwall Collegiate auditorium, a fivehour extravaganza was broadcast live by CKSF. The 1955 list of performers included the Leo Motard Quartet, trumpeters Bobby McGillivray and Billy Heward, vocalists Nancy Ruffo, country and western singer Rex Silmser

better known as Big Slim, vocalist Everett Rush teaming up with pianist George Patrick, violinist Raymond Dextras and accordion player Jacqueline Payette. The concert raised $2,800 to help purchase Christmas food baskets for needy families. * CKSF, in a large ad in the StandardFreeholder, which owned the station, wished all its listeners a Merry Christmas. The ad carried the signatures of the station’s 20 employees -John Larocque, Roly Forget, Bob Rowe, Bob Eadie, Hal Botham, Fred Pemberton, Alama Larocque, Tony Miseferi, Bill Gallant, Lyal Nixon, Mahlon Clark, Carl Fisher, Don Auty, Cam Hughes, Ron Carson, Isobel MacCrimmon, Doris Roberts, Big Slim, Grace Howard, George Lawrence. The station’s Christmas Day programming included the morning service from St. Paul’s United Church (First and Sydney streets), CBC news and weather, the Bob Eadie Show, Billy Graham and the Queen’s traditional Christmas message. * Cornwall Lions Club carollers - in traditional French-Canadian Les Guignolers garb - made the rounds in the ancient search of alms for the poor. * Eddy’s Barber Shop, 14 Second St. E., notified customers that the shop would be closed Dec. 26 and 27. Barbers Eddy, Andy and Maurice wished everyone a Merry Christmas as did the 35 members of the Barbers Union Local 758.
