How local is your beer?
Congratulations to 2017 Cornwall Living magazine and the people who produced last years edition. It took first place at the Ontario Chamber of Commerce Business Excellence Awards in April. Well done. My home town is a great community with great people. It always has been, but over the last few years the city has changed, and there is a real positive energy that is driving new development. Cornwall has a world-class hospital with top notch medical professionals. Enrollment at St. Lawrence College is surging and community groups are there to champion any cause. The River Institute is garnering worldwide attention for their research efforts. Young couples can afford to buy a home here, we have fantastic recreation facilities and our neighbourhoods are safe places in which to raise a family. It’s also a smart place to open a business or industry. With a strategic location on Highway 401, low cost electricity and room to grow in the Cornwall Business Park, Cornwall is a great choice for manufacturing, food processing and logistics companies. We have profiled many of the above stories in this year’s edition of Cornwall Living. The following pages are full of people and businesses achieving success here. So next time you are driving in the area, stop in and stay a while. There is a lot to do here and we are just waiting to say “Welcome”.

Consider Laura’s Art of Living and Giving your one-stop shop for all the finer things built on health, beauty and fun. The Brookdale Avenue lifestyle store has gained a solid reputation in Cornwall for its vast inventory of flowers, jewellery and home décor ideas, but it’s the relatively new kitchen and gourmet food area that is putting Laura’s over the top. Have you ever tried a wild raspberry balsamic mojito? You can, thanks to Laura’s olive oil and balsamic tasting bar. Other flavours such as Cranberry Pear White Balsamic, Tuscan Herb Olive Oil, Black Cherry Dark Balsamic and many, many more are available. They are all free from artificial colours, flavourings, preservatives and no added sugar, just pure goodness. The oils and balsamic vinegars can be used in any recipe, from salads and appetizers to mains and beverages. “We’re bringing more things from the big city to a smaller location,” said owner Kim Sabourin. “These products are better than anything you can find in the grocery stores and healthier for you, too. The beauty here is you can try everything. I have tasting cups and you can try what you want before you buy it.” Different-sized bottles are filled with the product you choose and are corked on site to ensure freshness. Spices from around the world, including locations in South America and Asia can also be found at Laura’s. Visit lauras.ca for more information.

welcome to cornwall Cornwall is being called home by an increasing number of new Canadians » BY NICK SEEBRUCH
Cornwall is a welcoming place. Its history as a community where different cultures have existed in harmony is a great blueprint for the future, especially as the city welcomes new Canadians. Cornwall is also growing, as major employers are creating new jobs. In order to sustain that growth, the city will need to attract new residents including new Canadians. Cornwall Economic Development is a city agency that is working to help local companies find new employees. It maintains a website - ChooseCornwall.ca - that lists available jobs and where people can order a free new resident information package. It also has another website - ImmigrationCornwall.ca - that provides information to help immigrants become more familiar with living in the area. Finding a new job is usually the first priority when someone is looking to settle in a new community. Fortunately, local companies such

as Olymel, TTEC, Xplornet and Walmart Logistics all have active recruitment programs. Olymel has a bacon and ham
processing facility in Cornwall. The company has expanded rapidly over the past few years and has had to look outside the city to meet their employment needs. Olymel is actively working with organizations in Montreal and Ottawa to meet new Canadians and to learn how they can help integrate these new Canadians into the Cornwall community. Plant Manager Danny Gagnon is himself a new transplant to Cornwall and says that the city deserves a closer look from job-seekers. “Cornwall is more diverse and reflective of all of Canada than it was maybe 50 years ago,” he says. “Here you can have that big city diversity with a small-town feel.” Walmart Logistics is another major employer in the area that is rapidly growing and is always looking to hire more employees. The company is the city’s largest employer. Walmart Logistics’ new General
“There’s always a personal cost to moving to a new community, but Cornwall is worth it.”
Ivan Contreras Tampico’s
Manager is not only new to Cornwall, but is new to Canada as well. Curtis Brumfield is here on a work visa and is originally from Texas. Brumfield has already started to make himself a part of the community by joining the Cornwall Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and says that he feels very welcome in his new home. “The cost of living here is reasonable, the people are overly friendly,” he explained. “The restaurants are good, and it is a very family-oriented place, everyone is close.” Brumfield said that he found the people of Cornwall to be very welcoming and helpful to newcomers. Of course, not all newcomers are looking for jobs. Some create their own by starting their own business.
20
cornwall LIVING 2018
Ivan Contreras is originally from Mexico, but saw an opportunity to introduce Cornwall to authentic Mexican cuisine and opened an eatery named after his home town Tampico. Cornwall has a long history of welcoming entrepreneurs, and it has the support network to help them succeed in business with the Cornwall Business Enterprise Centre, Community Futures and Cornwall Innovation Centre all providing valuable assistance. For those newcomers looking to augment their education, local schools have opened their doors. The Upper Canada District School Board has welcomed new students from a variety of different countries. Integrating foreign students into the regular student population has proven to be very beneficial. The Cornwall campus of St. Lawrence College is home to 200 International students, from countries as far away as Brazil, Japan, China, India, Ecuador, Korea and Mexico. These students bring diverse educational and cultural backgrounds which contribute significantly to campus life. Sometimes, where English is not a student’s first language, the language barrier can present challenges – for example, where students work together on group projects. However, those challenges are well met by students and faculty willing to help. Everybody benefits from the experience. “We are proud of the fact that SLC is becoming a globally recognized institution, attracting students from around the world,” says Deb Stava, Dean of the Cornwall Campus. “These students add to the diversity of the campus and offer a global perspective which contributes to global competence of all of our graduates. Through
their education at the college and their involvement in the community, these students are really becoming woven into the fabric of the city. Students who secure work permits following their studies obtain work and are valuable employees to businesses and industry in Cornwall. Community support is available to newcomers who need assistance in adjusting to their new community. TR Leger Immigrant Services plays a vital role in fostering understanding between the community, settled immigrants and newcomers. The organization provides English as a second language training, childcare for new immigrants and the opportunity to speak with immigration and settlement experts. Services are also available in multiple languages including Urdu, Hindi, Punjabi, Gujrati, Arabic, French and English. Support to newcomers is also available via the Eastern Ontario
Training Board which offers integration services to refugees, those here on work visas, naturalized Canadian citizens and even visitors. Services include help with applications for work permits, visas, health cards and other important documentation. Supportive counselling is often very important to newcomers who are away from family and friends, but still need
someone to help get themselves on track in a new community. Cornwall offers great opportunity for individuals to achieve success and build a new life. Local companies, schools and community organizations are all working together to ensure that this city is a place with limitless possibilities for Canadians, new and old alike. www.immigrationcornwall.ca

BIG JUMPS BIG AIR The exciting sport of BMX racing has a new home in Guindon Park. » BY BOB PETERS One of the fastest growing sports in Ontario now has a home in Cornwall. The new Cornwall BMX Track at Guindon Park officially opens this summer and the anticipation is building. The W-shaped dirt track features a variety of bumps, hills and jumps allowing competitors to put on an exciting display of sportsmanship. “BMX racing is an inexpensive sport that provides fun and entertainment for the whole family,” says Cornwall BMX Club President Dan Drouin. ““It is also a great spectator sport offering some amazing competition.” BMX is an abbreviation for bicycle motocross and became popular when young cyclists appropriated motocross tracks for fun, racing and stunts, eventually evolving specialized BMX bikes and competitions.
26
cornwall LIVING 2018
Membership in the Cornwall BMX club is steadily growing, and includes both children and adults. Regular racing will take place Monday evenings at the new track with Club practices held on Wednesday evenings. Both events will be free for first timers. “We’re really excited to get going,” says TJ Schail, who along
with Mr. Drouin and a core group of volunteers, have worked hard to build Cornwall’s track. “We’ve had a lot of great support from the community.” The land for the track was leased by the City of Cornwall to the BMX Club, which is handling maintenance and operations. The project has also been supported by various businesses and sponsors, including a $10,000 donation from the Rotary Club of Cornwall. The Cornwall track joins a growing list of BMX venues in Eastern Ontario, and it will form part of the provincial BMX series, attracting visitors to Cornwall. The Cornwall Provincial Qualifier will be a three day weekend event in July. “BMX is a great family sport,” adds Mr. Drouin. “Everybody can race, even Mom and Dad!” cornwallbmx.ca
TJ Shail and Dan Drouin have created Cornwall’s first ever BMX track.

CORNWALL’S JACOB RUEST IS THRILLING CROWDS IN THE NATIONAL LACROSSE LEAGUE
cornwall LIVING 2018

Jacob Ruest is making a name for himself in Denver. The fleet-footed forward plays for the Colorado Mammoth, one of the top teams in the National Lacrosse League. He scored 18 goals with the Mammoth last year – setting a franchise record for goals by a rookie. He has added even more offence in his sophomore season, and is currently the Mammoth’s third-leading point getter. “Making the adjustment from college to pro has been made easier thanks to my teammates and coaches,” says Mr. Ruest. “It is very rewarding to be able to contribute

at the highest possible level of the game.” Known as Rooster to his teammates and to Mammoth fans, Mr. Ruest has also had to adjust to the energized environment at the Pepsi Centre, where the Mammoth have been averaging nearly 14,000 fans per game. “The fans in Colorado are very passionate, and we feed from their energy.” Mr. Ruest previously played NCAA Division 1 Field Lacrosse at Robert Morris University in Pittsburgh, where he earned a Marketing degree. He is the first
Cornwall minor lacrosse player to be drafted into the National Lacrosse League. Jacob’s current success as a professional athlete comes as no surprise to people in Cornwall. He was an active child who could not wait to play hockey and snowboard. At the age of seven, Jacob expressed an interest in playing lacrosse. The family had watched the Toronto Rock in the NLL Championship game on TSN and he was intrigued. It wasn’t long before he proclaimed lacrosse as his favourite sport. Although he wasn’t the

Lacrosse became a family affair for the Ruest family, with his parents Jack and Bonnie actively involved in coaching and volunteering with the Cornwall Minor Lacrosse Association. Jacob’s older brother Elias also played the sport. On his journey from minor lacrosse to university to the pros, Jacob has had great teachers and coaches and role models including his father Jack and his great-grandfather Joe “Skip” St. Denis – a member of the Cornwall Sports Hall of Fame. “I have had a lot of really good coaches who have helped me improve my skills and knowledge of the game,” says Mr. Ruest. “I’ve also had tremendous support from my family and friends, and I am happy to represent Cornwall in the sport.” As one might expect, his parents are very proud of their son’s athletic achievements. “To be a part of the crowd at a Mammoth game and seeing and hearing thousands of fans cheering for your son is very moving”, says his mother, Bonnie Ruest. “However, we are even more proud of Jacob the person and how he humbly and positively goes about his life’s work.” Jacob quietly gives back to the community and the game he loves both in Denver and at home in Cornwall. Locally, he can be seen at times on the floor at the Benson Centre as a minor rep team practice, and in the role of offensive coach with the Akwesasne Junior B Indians. www.coloradomammoth.com www.cornwallminorlacrosse.ca
Jacob always has time for fans, especially future lacrosse stars like Quincy and Cameron Houle.

Whiskey
WAVE OF
Whisky is trending. Sales of the golden liquid are increasing as more and more people are exploring the amazing choices available from both established and start up craft distillers. Each March, hundreds of guests gather at the Wonderful World of Whisky Show in Cornwall to learn more about the industry – and sample some of its wares. We caught up with four high profile people passionate about their whisky, and asked them for some insights.
American Whiskey
The history of American Whiskey is intertwined with American history dating back before the Revolutionary War. Pioneers who became farmers made whiskey from excess grains at the end of the growing season. The Rye style was born in the plains of Pennsylvania. Later Bourbon was born in the frontiers of Kentucky, which still produces 95% of the category. The biggest influence of Bourbon’s signature vanilla and caramel sweetness is the standard use of new charred oak barrels, which is required for a “Straight Whiskey”. Tennessee Whiskey is recognized as a distinct style similar to Bourbon, with exception it uses a pre-maturation filtration process through charred green sugar maple that is proprietary to Tennessee.
Start With:
Basil Hayden’s
Butterscotch, toffee and caramel with buttery vanilla, and a high-rye bite. A soft 40% abv, aged almost double the minimum standard of 4 years to carry no age statement. Sip it neat, on the rocks, or in a Mint Julep. The perfect gateway for the Bourbon-curious especially crossing over from Scotch. Also, Jim Beam Black, the best in class under 8 years. Amazing value.
Check Out: “Bonded” whiskies like Jim Beam and
Old Grand Dad.
These whiskies are 100 proof (50% abv) aged a minimum 4 years and regulated by the first government sanctioned consumer protection act of 1897. One hundred years later, Booker Noe, the grandson of Jim Beam, coins the term “Small Batch” Whiskey, which usually denotes bottlings of hundreds of barrels instead of thousands, coming from a specific location or sweet spot in the warehouse.
Matt Jones is Beam Suntory Canada’s World Whisk(e)y Ambassador. He has represented every style of whisk(e)y in the BSC portfolio from Irish to Bourbon Whiskey, Scotch to Canadian and Japanese Whisky. Known as @Whisky_Chef to the trade, Matt travels across Canada preaching the gospel and spreading his love of whisk(e)y often with a cocktail and culinary approach. In 2016 Matt was highly commended as nominee for World Whisky Ambassador of the Year, and then winning the Global American Whiskey Ambassador of the Year in 2017.
CANADIAN Whisky
Although it has consistently been the best selling whisky style in North America since 1865, Canadian whisky is seriously misunderstood and is just beginning to regain popularity among whisky connoisseurs. Unlike in other countries, Canadian distillers generally process the different grain types separately until they have matured into whisky. Only when each grain has attained its optimal whisky flavours are they mingled together in blends. This is how Canadian whisky makers create such a broad range of whisky styles, from light mixers to the most robust of flavour monsters.
Start With: Forty Creek Copper Pot Reserve.
Forty Creek strives to make its whiskies just a little bit bigger than others at the same price. That logic keeps this robust blend of corn, barley and rye whiskies a perennial favourite of connoisseur and casual drinker alike.

IRISH Whiskey
At the turn of the 20th century Irish Whiskey was Queen far surpassing Scotch in production, export and quality. Almost wiped out completely by 1980, it has since seen resurgence and is the fastest growing whisky category in the world. Single Pot Style Whiskey is exclusive to Ireland. In general it is triple distilled which lends to a smooth and refreshing style of whiskey.

has led the revitalization of the category with new innovative whiskeys. The Caskmates limited edition is aged in a stout barrel which imparts flavours of coffee and cocoa.

Scotch
Scotch whisky evolved from a Scottish drink called uisge beatha, which means “water of life” and its use can be traced back to 1494. Strict regulations govern the making of Scotch, the most important being that it must be distilled in Scotland. Often characterized by a smoky or peaty flavour, Scotch has generated fervant fan clubs around the world who celebrate the hundreds of variations on a centuries old recipe.
Start With: Glenfiddich
The first Glenfiddich came off the stills in 1887 and today the company is still run by William Grant’s descendants. Glenfiddich accounts for about 30% of all single malt sales worldwide and is a great bottle to begin with.
Check Out: Benromach Single Malt Whisky
Benromach was founded in 1898 and today its current output is just 400,000 litres per year. Benromach produces a very traditional spirit that would have been common in Speyside about 50 years ago, elegant, fruity with a touch of smoke. Matured in sherry casks there are layers of complexity to this indulgent dram; pours like liquid gold.
Bill Somerville Born in Scotland, Bill Somerville is the Canadian Brand Ambassador for Benromach Distillery and a popular speaker on the subject of whisky. Benromach is a small distillery in Speyside focused on tradition and quality.

and Europe. The 100% cotton batik fabric is so beautiful that customers often keep the fabric, even if they don’t know quite what to do with it. “It’s a question we’ve been asked since the beginning,” says Angela Youngs, owner of Ground Soap. “There have been many great ideas
tossed around, but for us, one of them stood out.” Ground Soap has launched “Piece by Piece” a unique initiative that sees its batik fabric being used to support worthy causes. Customers are encouraged to mail back the fabric once they unwrap their soaps. The fabric is then used to create
beautiful handmade quilts designed and pieced by Debbie Fraser in Cornwall and machine quilted by Neil Hargreaves in Ottawa. The quilts are either sold or auctioned off, with the proceeds going to charity. “I really enjoy coming up with new designs and creating unique, one of a kind quilts,” says Ms. Fraser. “Batik is a wonderful fabric to use as each piece carries its own design. Batik is a process where a combination of wax and dye is used to create complex multicolored designs on fabric. Ground Soap sources its batik fabric from Indonesia which has great
significance to Ms. Youngs. “My Dutch grandparents spent several years in Indonesia learning the language and the culture,” says Ms. Youngs. “Eventually the growing family immigrated to Canada to settle in Eastern Ontario and a great deal of the Indonesian
culture came with them.” A few years ago Ms. Youngs travelled to Indonesia to meet the people who create batiks by hand. “I was lucky enough to hang around their outdoor shops while they stamped, washed and dyed long rolls of cotton into beautiful designs,” she says. “I am so happy that this fabric can be reborn into a quilt and live on to bring joy to others for years to come.” The first Piece by Piece quilt was recently auctioned off, raising over $1100 for United Way. Another went to Beyond 21, a very deserving organization that works with local families. www.groundsoap.com cornwall LIVING 2018

travelling overseas? Before you depart, call medical arts Let’s face it. Nobody wants to get sick or injured overseas. Yet according to a report published in the New England Journal of Medicine, between 20 and 70 per cent of international travellers report having had a travel-related illness. “It’s very satisfying to help prepare travellers because some of the world’s most beautiful places have health risks,” says Erica Shearer, one of the travel health pharmacists at Medical Arts. “For example, in North America we’re not overly concerned about rabies due to the success of animal vaccination. But there are many places in the world where rabies – a disease that can be fatal – is still common. So, if someone’s travelling to any of the world’s hot spots for rabies, I always explain that avoiding contact with dogs and other kinds of wildlife is important, as
well as what to do if a person is scratched or bitten.” Medical Arts offers a structured approach to anyone who makes a travel health appointment. Generally, it means reviewing a person’s health status and investigating the infectious and noninfectious risks they might encounter. “It’s not all about vaccines,” Erica says. “There are numerous environmental factors that pose risks, such as contaminated food and water, disease-carrying mosquitoes or over exposure to the sun.” Erica also stresses the importance of carrying adequate quantities of one’s prescription medication, printed lists of the medication and packing strategically. “Unfortunately, bags do get lost, flights
do get cancelled and refrigerators can fail.” In the broader picture of current or emerging infectious diseases (consider Zika), protecting the health of travellers also means safeguarding the health of the communities to which they return. Anyone planning overseas travel can make an appointment but should do so at least six weeks before departure.

Science matters Dr. Jeff Ridal and his team at the River Institute are discovering how to improve the health of large river ecosystems
» BY KAREN DOUGLASS-COOPER The St. Lawrence River is one of the great rivers in the world. It’s the gateway from the Great Lakes to the Atlantic Ocean. For centuries its waters have provided sustenance, commerce, recreation, and transportation for communities living along its shoreline. The River Institute was founded in 1994 to answer the questions people were asking about the River’s health and to establish local partnerships between scientists and the community. Since then, under the leadership of Dr. Jeff Ridal, the Institute has gained an international reputation for fresh water research, education, and community engagement. “Our goal is to set a new standard for environmental science and action,
“Every day we learn a little bit more about the ecosystems that sustains us.”
and to identify and tackle research for protection and rehabilitation of the St. Lawrence River and other freshwater systems,” says Dr. Ridal. “At the same time, our efforts are having impacts beyond Eastern Ontario and are garnering attention around the world.” One of the unique aspects of the River Institute is its relationship with Cornwall neighbours and partners, the Mohawks of Akwesasne, who have encouraged a linking of Traditional Ecological Knowledge with science.
“We aim to inspire and motivate youth to get involved in environmental issues and to provide our community with the information it needs,” says Walter Oeggerli, Chair of the River Institute`s Board of Directors. “Our experience at the River institute is that the stories that define our history are important pathways of engaging people in environmental issues.” As warm weather brings more activity to the River, the same is true for the Institute. They will host the 25th Great Lakes /
St. Lawrence River Ecosystem Symposium at the end of May. Numerous research efforts, River workshops, and camps will keep staff busy throughout the summer months. They will also host the visit of tall ship “Black Jack” at Cornwall Harbour for Great River Day in July. “Every day we learn a little bit more about the eco-systems that sustains us,” says Dr. Ridal. “Knowledge is power and a wonderful thing to share with each other.” www.riverinstitute.ca

Modern Meets Rustic
After 35 years of tenancy on Montreal Road, the well-established practice of Dr. Sylvain Bossé relocated to the Cotton Mill District. Since his daughter joined the practice five years ago, Dr. Rebecca Bossé wanted to create a space that would provide a modern dental clinic. After over a year of planning and construction, the Bossé Dental Clinic has been enjoying its new home in the original Weave Shed of the Cotton Mill, since the end of October 2017. The Weave Shed is one of Cornwall’s most historic and culturally significant building. For generations, prior to the closure, the Mills were the foundation of the “Le Village” community. The revitalized building now form the basis of the Cotton Mill complex. As patients walk into the office, they are greeted by an original red-brick wall known as the “American Wall” depicting its industrial heyday with original wood post and beam construction. It gives a rustic feel to this state-of-the art dental clinic. The custom made light fixtures that hang over the reception desk are also a perfect mix of textures incorporating copper pendant lights and original wooden beams. Dr. Rebecca Bossé’s vision was to create a space that incorporates modern accents while staying true to the rustic feel of this industrial historic building. The existing flooring has been refurbished in most areas of the clinic and the original ceiling is exposed throughout the space. The Bossé Dental Clinic now has six operatory/treatment rooms to better serve their clientele. The office is also equipped with digital radiographs and brand new dental chairs with massaging options. Smart televisions are also mounted onto the ceiling of the treatment rooms in order to offer visual entertainment to their patients while they are receiving their dental treatments. These specific upgrades add to the exceptional patient experience at this long-standing family practice. The dynamic father-daughter duo of Dr. Sylvain and Dr. Rebecca Bossé, as well as their highly trained staff members, continue to put their patients’ expectations to the results they deserve. “We are happy to continue our patient care in our new location and are very grateful to them,” said Dr. Rebecca Bossé. New patients are also welcome to contact the clinic by e-mail at frontdesk@drbosse.ca or by telephone at 613-938-7560. The Bossé Dental Clinic is located at 111-705 Cotton Mill Street in Cornwall, Ontario.

The NAV CENTRE
An unique and diverse village located in this executive conference centre!
A
t first glance, visitors whisper a silent wow as they wind their way up the stately drive and approach the main entrance of this amazing resort property overlooking the majestic St. Lawrence River. Welcome to the NAV CENTRE, a village under one roof and considered to be one of the finest international conference, training and accommodation complexes in Canada and recently recognized as one of the top 12 Executive Conference Centres in both the US and Canada by Unique Venues.
With fully equipped modern meeting spaces, fitness centre, a choice of restaurants and pubs and 535 guest rooms, the NAV CENTRE has become one of Ontario’s premier destinations for business, training, and leisure. Located on 70 acres of landscaped grounds with walking and biking trails close by, it brings together an enviable array of facilities and services along with a dedicated team of meeting and hospitality professionals responsive to every guest’s needs. After taking in the spectacular
surroundings with the commanding view of the river and mountains beyond, that sense of wow continues as guests enter the beautifully appointed lobby, and just beyond, lush gardens in the central courtyard. For over 40 years, the NAV CENTRE has been the location of choice for wide array of activities from hosting international conventions to local festivals and events including becoming a popular venue for destination weddings. The Centre is also gaining a reputation for its culinary excellence,
CAFé
distinguished dinners and banquet events such as the local chamber of commerce annual Business Excellence Awards that brings together the region’s leading business professionals. The NAV CENTRE earns rave reviews for its sumptuous ‘cordon-bleu’ meals and the memorable experience it offers to all in attendance. That’s just the beginning. A closer look at this superb centre of learning and celebration reveals there is much more than dazzling views, attractive interiors, and friendly smiles.
Kim Coe-Turner, the NAV CENTRE’s General Manager, puts it this way. “With our full slate of conference and events expertise and a firstclass team, we have the ability to host all types of activities every day of the week.” She continues. “We work closely with multiple levels of government who carry out their training and professional development programs here. This large facility of 630,000 sq. ft. has many aspects and was purposely built for training – there is nothing like it in Canada. We’ve hosted regional economic
summits; we’re the site for the region’s unique Cornwall Innovation Centre, and we’ve collaborated with Ottawa Aviation Services in establishing a Professional Pilot Training Centre of Excellence. And, that’s just a sample of what we’re capable of doing.” NAV CENTRE also houses many NAV CANADA training programs including those for their Technical Operations department and for international Air Traffic Control students. Some might think that the formal training and professional development activities are
the focus of the NAV CENTRE, but you may be surprised to learn there is a softer and more personal side that includes, among other things, spa services, a fitness centre that offers a variety of family and other events, and the Jet Set Pub which has become the place to go for evening entertainment. Beyond professional training and conventions, the NAV CENTRE team wants visitors and others alike to know that it has gained enviable bragging rights because of some innovative ‘out-of-the-box’ thinking by some of its people. For the second year in a row, Ian Bentley, Director of Conference Services and Executive chef Luc McCabe presented the Wonderful World of Whisky. The sellout event attracted hundreds of whisky aficionados from both Canada and the United States who enjoyed multiple tastings and learned about whiskies
84
cornwall LIVING 2018
from around the world. This summer, the NAV CENTRE will launch yet another, must-attend event as it presents Beer, Bourbon, BBQ and Blues. The NAV CENTRE team reports that it has already secured 15 breweries along with four bourbon distilleries, all of whom will be on board for the celebration, deliciously enhanced by Chef McCabe’s world class BBQ artistry. Silvia Marino, National Manager, Sales and Marketing states that “the increased efforts from the sales team and the marketing and advertising of the NAV CENTRE have successfully attracted participants from across Canada and world-wide to Cornwall.” “One of the strategies has been to attend tradeshows to promote the NAV CENTRE including to highlight all that Cornwall has to offer to guests who visit this City during their stay at the NAV CENTRE.”
We’ve talked about events, now — let’s talk about awards. Some will remember the Chamber’s prestigious Above and Beyond award the NAV CENTRE captured in 2017. This year, it was the NAV CENTRE’s Chef Ryan Beauvais’ turn to be recognized. Beauvais started out by winning the coveted Canadian ‘IACC Copper Skillet’ culinary competition in Toronto followed by winning the North America competition in Chicago with his pan-seared pork loin in a mushroom cream sauce, paired with potato hash, buttered poached shrimp, and a scrumptious herb salad. Beauvais moved on to compete against winners from Europe and Australia in Philadelphia and placed in the top awards. Jacques Baheux comments, “How proud everyone at the Centre and the Community are of our culinary team and the recent success of Chef Beauvais.”

World Class innovation in the Heart of Cornwall It’s a typical scene played out at the end of the day in malls across North America. As employees pack up and switch off lights, one by one the security grilles are rolled across storefronts. What most people in Cornwall don’t know is that one of the world’s leading manufacturers of these security closures is based right here. Dynamic Closures relocated in Long Sault in 1983, and since then has continued to introduce new features and options in security closures for stores, airports, pharmacies, service counters and other public spaces. Side folding security doors have to meet a surprisingly complex set of requirements. Naturally they have to be secure, but also easy to install and easy to open and close for the staff. They also have to be available in a variety of designs, so architects can choose a door that suits their overall design.
Luckily for Dynamic, innovation is a tradition. The founder of Dynamic Closures invented the side folding security door in 1975 and changed the world of retail security. Today, Dynamic’s R&D department is constantly finding new ways to answer the custom needs of their clients. Dynamic holds a number of patents, including for the one-piece hinge found in their Slim Line series. This design not only reduces unsightly black staining but offers one of the most compact designs and highest levels of security available. It is even safer for end users as fingers can’t be pinched in the fold. Recent Dynamic innovations also include a better door suspension system that can carry more weight from the ceiling track and still roll smoothly. This means doors can be taller, a feature that upscale retailer Holt Renfrew used with their 25’ tall door in Mississauga’s Square
One mall. Currently, Dynamic is making use of 3D software and high-resolution 3D printing to create prototypes for custom parts in a matter of hours. This process allows them to design, test, and market new parts faster and more affordably. Dynamic needs to keep innovating to maintain its competitive edge. Don’t be surprised to see new products with industrychanging features in the near future.

Make the right choices. get the right advice.
Q A &
with Maurice Gatien
CL: What is the primary function of a lawyer?
CL: Can you provide a specific example of providing solutions?
MG: A good lawyer is a solutionist. Many of the best solutions are the simplest – and the most costeffective.
MG: Let’s take a simple example like buying a house. The process can be a positive stress (exciting and satisfying) or a negative stress (anxious and worrisome). To help buyers, we put together a check-list on our web-site that a buyer can download and use as a guide. Buyers are going to feel much more confident that they have everything covered if they follow the check-list. It’s a bit like having a map, to make it easier to find one’s way.
CL: What are the most important elements of creating solutions? MG: There are many elements, but essentially the 2 core aspects are the following. Firstly, problems are a fact of life and it’s important to be objective, to assemble the facts and to understand the challenge. Secondly, it’s also important to develop alternative strategies – to enable a client to have some choices.
CL: Do people like having guidance? MG: Yes, they do – but, a lawyer’s role isn’t to dictate to a client what to do –
the client is the decider and a lawyer should respect that fact. A lawyer should never lose sight of their advisory role. It’s the client’s life, it’s the client’s money – they get to decide. But they should make their decision with the best advice. CL: Do people over-rate the advice from Lawyers? MG: Sometimes, the problem is that lawyers over-rate themselves. I never hesitate to call in other resources when a problem comes up that requires experts in other fields. Sometimes, it’s tax advice from an accountant. Sometimes, it’s advice from an engineer or architect. Sometimes, it’s advice

real estate. Wills & estates. Business laW. litigation. from a realtor about market conditions. A team approach generally works best. And of course the client can contribute to the process too, since they know the facts and circumstances, but need a bit of help to organize their thoughts about them. CL: What is something surprising that people would never guess about you? MG: I don’t golf – even though most of my friends do and I do have an appreciation for the challenges of the game. Every few years, I’ll caddy for one of my friends and remind myself of how mis-matched I am to the game of golf. Instead, I bike long
MG
distances. One of my favourite rides consists of cycling to Lake Placid in late September to take advantage of the Fall foliage. I also like cycling to Montreal, transitioning from the quiet roads of rural Glengarry to the urban excitement of a big city. My rides to Montreal end at the Atwater Market, a destination with color and energy – and great food. CL: Do lawyers like lawyer jokes? MG: Lawyers have a good sense of humor. Lawyer jokes pre-date the Shakespearean era. But, while lawyers are often a target of many jokes, the fact is that civilized life depends on
Maurice Gatien LAW OFFICE
lawyers being at the friction point in society – resolving issues. Countries that have little regard for the law or for lawyers are not countries where most people would want to live. CL: What is your most satisfying aspect of practicing law? MG: There are many aspects of law that are satisfying and where a lawyer feels useful. But, the most touching situations involve going to the hospital to get a will done or a power of attorney. These end-of-life discussions can be very touching, very emotional. I always come away with a deep appreciation of the importance of valuing each day. •

Puck love Graduates of the Ontario Hockey Academy are achieving success on and off the ice » BY BOB PETERS Hockey is a fast paced game that is a joy to play, be it at a rink or on a frozen pond. If a young player practices hard and receives the proper instruction, hockey can also open doors to future careers. For many aspiring young athletes, the path to success includes a stay at the Ontario Hockey Academy, which is celebrating 10 years of combining quality education with a world class athletic program. “We pride ourselves on providing a supportive environment for players in their teen years to combine their love of hockey and their desire to secure that all-important postsecondary education,” says Giles Lascelle, who along with his wife Kim runs the Academy along with a staff of over 20 professionals. And help them they do. OHA graduates were represented on Swiss, Japanese and Korean women’s teams at the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games. A few

weeks later, OHA alumni helped Great Britain win the U18 IIHF World Championships in Estonia. Home base for the Academy is a renovated campus on Vincent Massey that includes 26 dorm style rooms, cafeteria, and a hockey
specific off-ice training facility. OHA teams practice at the Benson Centre and the Civic Complex, in order to prepare for an extensive game schedule that provides athletes with exposure to a number of scouting opportunities. Students come from across around the world to attend OHA. Last year, 21 countries were represented. The Academy is registered with the Ontario Ministry of Education which means that all graduates receive a Ontario Secondary School Diploma. Students have gone on to further their athletic careers – and education – at a number of top ranked schools, including St. Mary’s, University of British Columbia, Princeton and Harvard. “Our students are our family, and our mission is to help them succeed in their dreams and aspirations,” says Kim Lascelle. www.ontariohockeyacademy.com

HARMONY AT WALMART Cornwall has emerged as a major hub in the flow of goods to Walmart stores in Central and Eastern Canada. » BY BOB PETERS Curtis Brumfield walks through the massive Harmony Distribution Centre and associates left and right pause to smile and nod hello. It is a sign of the positive energy that permeates the entire Walmart Logistics facility. “People enjoy working here - I enjoy working here,” says Mr. Brumfield, General Manager for the sprawling 1.5 million sq.ft. facility. “Life is too short to work somewhere where you are not happy.” There are a lot of happy people working for Walmart Logistics in Cornwall, which numbers 1600 people across the entire Cornwall campus that includes the new Harmony Distribution Centre and its sister facility, the Regional Distribution Centre. “We train our associates and give them the tools to succeed,” notes Mr. Brumfield. “Logistics is a great career and Cornwall is an affordable

Rachel’s Kids House of Hope
R
achel’s Kids House of Hope has recently celebrated our 1-year anniversary and none of it could have been possible without the generosity of our Community through donations and fundraising support. At House of Hope we pride ourselves in helping our little locals realize big dreams with the help of our community room, splatter paint room and sensory room. We have a beautiful centre with an array of stimulating toys and equipment along with stations offering children state of the art tactile and sensory processing tools keeping them engaged, active and creative. The House of Hope is open to everyone in our community to use as a safe place to take your children for learning and fun. But there is one thing that makes us “unique” and that is that we are the only centre in SD&G and surrounding area that has launched a Super Kids Camp for Special Needs children. Rachel’s Kids is extremely proud to have helped hundreds of families over the course of the years through various programs such as Helping Hands and Small Moments of Joy; however, one question continues to surface. What camp services or programs are offered in SD&G for our
Special Needs? Raising a child with Special Needs can be difficult for many families. Parents to children with more “invisible” challenges such as ADHD, Autism (ASD), Oppositional Defiance Disorder (ODD) and any developmental difference or delays may not only be dealing with the hurdles and additional financial battles, but also a lack of opportunity for respite. Typically, when a parent discovers their child has a developmental difference such as Autism, they are often faced with denial, fears and concerns that can be overwhelming. Following the initial shock, parents often find themselves delving into a vast amount of self education, learning of coping skills and applications for therapies. It can all be so overwhelming. Children with Special Needs often require special equipment, services and care that may not be available to them in daycares or camps therefore many families go without or wait for years to get services that would have been beneficial if used earlier. For the parents of children
with special needs, the gap is wide: So many are forced to cobble together a plan to help their children, often at great financial and personal expense. This is tragic and understand how difficult it can be, so we’ve decided to help in any way we could. Within 6 months of Rachel’s Kids House of Hope’s Grand Opening, we proudly launched our first Super Kids Summer Camp! Our campers came from all over SD&G and surrounding area to join our day camp throughout the course of the summer. We offered 8 weeks of respite
for families and worked closely with supporting agencies to ensure our families received as much funding as possible to cover the costs. What a successful summer! Themed days, activities and loads of adventures out in the community providing constant stimulation for those with sensory processing disorders and outdoors activities for those requiring to exert energy. We couldn’t have asked for a better group of campers to launch our first summer camp! Rachel’s Kids Super Kids Camp Counselors are thoroughly screened and require a degree in the field or working
toward their certification. They are certified ECEs, PSWs, DSWs, SSWs, EA’s and Teachers and we are proud to have them on our team. At Rachel’s Kids, we pride ourselves of being the only centre in SD&G and surrounding area to offer a camp for our little local with Special Needs and we have our amazing community to thank for this opportunity. Without the generosity of our sponsors, your donations and our volunteers this opportunity for our families and our special needs friends could not have been possible. Thank you!
Raising a child with Special Needs can be difficult for many families.

Akwesasne Mohawks are recognized as a progressive people yet still maintaining the language, culture and traditions of our ancestors. Today the Mohawk territory is divided into two countries, and then divided again into two provinces, plus the state of New York, resulting in Akwesasne being referred to as a multi-jurisdictional territory. Despite this complexity the residents live as one community and invite visitors to come and learn more about them. Things You Need to Know... about Indigenous People
We sat down with Beatrice Johnson to learn more about the people of the Mohawk Nation of Akwesasne. Beatrice has presented to audiences from Phoenix to Yellowknife, helping society better understand the culture of indigenous people. We Were Here First Indigenous people lived in North America for thousands of years before settlers arrived. In our house, you were guests who simply have never left. The knowledge of being here first has survived generations, and colours our outlook to this very day. A Nod Can Mean Many Things We don’t always say hello, or even “good job”. Why speak when a nod or gesture will do? Don’t take our silence as a challenge, but feel free to nod back!
102
cornwall LIVING 2018
Our Body Language Tells A Story Many indigenous people may not maintain eye contact or tend to look away when someone is talking. This doesn’t mean we have stopped listening. We’re just not quite ready to embrace the whole European hug and kiss greeting. We may not smile as much – but that doesn’t mean we don’t find you funny. My uncle would jokingly say, “less smiling leads to less wrinkles.”
Collective Consciousness Every family is connected in our culture. If one child achieves success, the entire community rejoices. If tragedy strikes one family, it is felt in every household. We are connected, to each other, and to the land that sustains us. We all live in the same world... it is up to all of us to learn about each other’s culture and move forward together in building a better place for our children.

Quality care with a Personal Touch For more than 30 years, Personal Touch Physiotherapy has built a reputation as a clinic that blends quality care with a personal touch. Ashish Bharti and his wife Rani are both Registered Physiotherapists with more than 20 years of combined experience. For the past few years, they have owned and operated Personal Touch Physiotherapy after taking it over from Ashish’s father, Ashok, who founded the clinic. Ashish and his family have deep roots in the community. Ashish was born and raised in Cornwall, he attended Central Public School and General Vanier Secondary School and has been involved in the community for many years. Ashish graduated Summa Cum Laude in the Honours Bachelor of Kinesiology Program at McMaster University and then completed his Masters of Physiotherapy at Queen’s University. He began his career at the Canadian Back Institute in Toronto before returning to Cornwall in 2008. His wife Rani also graduated from McMaster and Queen’s universities and worked at various multidisciplinary clinics in the Greater Toronto Area before coming to Cornwall in 2011. “As our name suggests, each person who enters our doors is provided with a personalized exercise program, and pain relief strategies tailored to their specific needs,” said Ashish.

They also utilize a strong base of local Physicians, Chiropractors, Massage Therapists, Naturopathic Doctors, and Personal Trainers for their expertise whenever needed. “I’m really proud of our team,” said Ashish. We continually stay up-to- date with the latest research and techniques available to help our patients, including Active Release Techniques (ART) and Shockwave Therapy.” ART is a manual therapy technique that is considered the gold standard in soft tissue treatment. Shockwave Therapy uses a machine to deliver high intensity bursts of energy into the muscle or tendon, and is most commonly used to treat conditions like tennis elbow, plantar fasciitis and rotator cuff tendonitis. Personal Touch Physiotherapy has a full gym on-site and also provides Acupuncture, Concussion Rehab, KinesioTaping, Cold Laser Therapy, Spinal Decompression, Custom Orthotics and Bracing. Personal Touch Physiotherapy is a local Cornwall clinic that is staffed and equipped to provide necessary pain relief solutions for those in need.

Address the Weaknesses
3
Rehabilitation requires time, patience, and effort
Treat the Root of the Injury It is important to begin with a thorough assessment of each patient in order to determine the root of the injury. For example, someone may seek assistance for knee pain, but may often have issues with their feet or hips. The most common “roots” of injury that we see at the clinic are: decreased balance, weak glutes, and poor posture.
Personal Touch Physiotherapy has a team of six professionals that includes three Physiotherapists, A Certified Kinesiologist, and two Physiotherapy Assistants.
Your physiotherapist will be able to provide appropriate exercises to help improve your condition. If we determine that someone has poor balance, we may prescribe arch strengthening exercises and balancing on different surfaces. We will always ensure that someone has mastered an exercise before making it more difficult. Don’t ignore the core! Using a stability ball or working on planks can not only assist with chronic back pain, but can drastically improve nagging shoulder or neck issues. Keep a strong foundation! Our feet are the only part of us that interact with the ground, and are made up of many little bones and muscles. Walking and exercising barefoot can really help to strengthen your feet. Try to avoid high heels, flip-flops, or overly cushioned shoes.
There really are no quick fixes. It can be helpful to modulate your pain, but this doesn’t address the cause of the problem. We believe that strengthening is the key to truly resolve the issue, and prevent recurrences. When you attend our clinic, we will take the time to discuss your concerns and try to perfect your exercise technique. It is up to you to complete all the prescribed exercises at home. Dentists have done a great job at teaching us the importance of brushing and flossing regularly; as Physiotherapists - it is our job to convince you to incorporate daily exercise into your life. Furthermore, we believe that we act as rehabilitation specialists and being there to answer questions and provide reassurance along the way is invaluable.
4 Adopt Healthy Lifestyle Choices Regular exercise is an important component living a healthy life. At the same time - ample sleep, addressing your stressors, and a proper diet are also crucial. There are many foods that can hinder or help your recovery from injury. Specific foods have been shown to increase inflammation in your body (ie - fried foods and refined sugar) while others can decrease inflammation (ie ginger and turmeric).
5 Embrace the Best of the East and West Use ideas from around the world to assist you along the way. We like to use Traditional Chinese techniques such as Acupuncture and cupping to help people get moving. Furthermore, we use techniques from Yoga and Tai Chi as part of people’s exercise programs.

St. Lawrence College carpentry students build partnerships » BY DENISE WING Through partnerships with community organizations, St. Lawrence College skilled trades students are gaining invaluable hands-on learning opportunities while giving back to the Cornwall community. General Construction Carpentry Techniques students and Carpenter apprentices at the College’s Cornwall campuses participate in special projects for community organizations. These special projects are above and beyond their normal courseload and curriculum and allow the students and apprentices to practice their carpentry skills while creating a product that fills a need in the community. Generally, community organizations approach the College with a need, and the carpentry faculty consider the request based on the capacity of students and apprentices to fulfill the request. The organization covers the cost of supplies and the carpentry programs at the College provide the labour free of charge. “We only partner with local charities and not-forprofit organizations in order to give back to the community and to avoid competition with local contractors who would normally bid on projects,” explains Mark MacDonell, faculty member and coordinator of the General Construction Carpentry Techniques and the Carpenter Apprenticeship programs at St. Lawrence College. For the past five years, St. Lawrence College has partnered with the Children’s Treatment Centre to build 10-15 Adirondack rocking chairs for their largest fundraiser of the year, the Bike-AThon Plus. The Adirondack rocking chairs are used in the Centre’s RockA-Thon event and auctioned at the fundraiser each May. Other past projects have included a covered structure for outdoor

experiential learning opportunities at the St. Lawrence River Institute of Environmental Sciences, a gazebo for the enjoyment of patrons at the long-term care residence Woodland Villa, and several sheds for sports equipment storage for the Boys and Girls Club of Cornwall/SDG. These projects allow the apprentices and students to practice their skills, including framing lumber, shingling roofs, and installing doors and windows. Carpenter programs offered at St. Lawrence College include the in-school training of the General Carpenter Apprenticeship as defined by the Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Development. The Carpenter Apprenticeship program covers the theory and practice applications required under the Ontario apprenticeship-training program. After completing all three levels and the required number of hours of job-site experience, apprentices are eligible to write the Certificate of Qualification Exam for
Carpentry. Because the apprentices already have on-the-job training, they complete the majority of the special projects at St. Lawrence College before they return to their jobs. The General Construction Carpentry Techniques students, who gain their carpentry skills during a 40-week certificate program, volunteer each spring in a Habitat for Humanity build, lending their skills to the building of a home from the ground up for a deserving family in the Cornwall community. “St. Lawrence College is committed to meeting the needs of the communities we serve,” said Deb Stava, Dean of St. Lawrence College’s Cornwall campus. “We are proud to partner with so many local organizations and grateful for opportunities these partnerships provide for our apprentices and students to gain real-world learning and practice their skills while fostering a sense of community.” www.stlawrencecollege.ca

treating Chronic Pain: “making the impossible …Possible”
Cornwall is home to a world-class therapy clinicthat specializes in treating chronic pain conditions that healthcare professionals may find difficult to resolve. Innovative Therapy Canada is one such clinic, with a rather unique ability to diagnose and treat chronic pain. You might be surprised to learn that one of the reasons for the clinic’s successes comes from its’ owner, who happens to be blind.
Glenn Cameron has developed a rare sense of touch that allows him to feel problems that even the best imaging equipment like MRI’s can’t detect. Cameron has achieved a level of success
that many sighted health care professionals never reach. He uses this sense to diagnose pain conditions with extreme accuracy and then develops a detailed plan to reverse the painful effects of the condition and, more importantly, fix the cause of it as well. Since graduating as a Therapist, Cameron never adopted the attitude that he knew everything there was to know about medicine and therapy. Rather‐ he has been relentless in his pursuit of knowledge, seeking out some of the most advanced courses and seminars the medical world has to offer. He desperately wants to know when research offers new insight, tools, technologies, and techniques to solve issues not thought possible before now and make them available locally. He has equipped his Cornwall clinic with the very best therapeutic tools and technologies available today, to help those who suffer from conditions that have been deemed impossible to solve. This was clearly evident in January, 2018 when a 48 year old nurse from Nova Scotia came to see Glenn for answers as to why she has lived with severe chronic pain and been
unable to work for 14 years. Her story is one of intense suffering that should never have happened in the first place. Injured in a car accident in 2004, Lisa broke no bones or suffered no internal organ damage. Yet she never felt the pain from the accident ever leave her body. The list of health care professionals she saw over years covered the spectrum from massage therapy and physiotherapists, chiropractors, acupuncture, hypnosis and the top pain specialists in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick that medicine has to offer. None of the dozen or more health care professionals she went to could offer her any insight into the source of all her pain, let alone resolve it. Her life slowly faded over years, to a point where she wondered why she was still alive. She never gave up hope of finding an answer. “Glenn saved my life!” Lisa met Cameron earlier this year and that meeting changed her future. He was able to finally find the issues that caused so much pain for the past 14 years. Once treatments were completed, she returned home to Nova Scotia with a new quest for life, and to make the transition from a life of chronic pain, to one of returning to nursing work‐her calling. Lisa plans to soon begin helping others just like her‐ so they do not have to suffer as she did. Cameron cannot explain his relentless thirst for knowledge or private‐investigator like drive to find everyone’s true Cause and not just Symptoms, of pain. “Perhaps it’s my blindness that gives me the fight, wanting to achieve a level of success many sighted people never reach, so I don’t think I have a disability”. Whatever it is, those who seek help from Cameron will likely see results and join the list of many who are stunned with his abilities to both diagnose and treat pain conditions that historically seem impossible to resolve. “Pain is the body’s way of telling us we have a problem. Assuming it is a normal expectation for our age, or that we are not at all fixable is crazy”, says Cameron. “This is 2018, not 1918, so most problems that don’t kill us are actually solvable”. Glenn Cameron is determined to do just that. Perhaps Innovative Therapy Canada can help you ‘Make the Impossible…Possible’.

Grateful Patient thanks his Healthcare Heroes One cold morning in December, Gary Collins passed out during a shift and awoke on the concrete. Reluctantly, he allowed a co-worker to drive him to Cornwall Community Hospital, as his wife Debbie raced to meet him. “I arrived at the Emergency Department and it was packed. I told myself if I didn’t get called in ten minutes’ time, I’d just go home once Debbie showed up, but my number came up sooner than I expected. I walked up to the triage nurse and blacked out. When I came to, I couldn’t speak. I kept thinking this isn’t happening. This can’t be me.” Gary found himself in a bed, attached to a heart monitor, surrounded by staff. For the first time in his life, he felt vulnerable. His fear intensified as the doctor explained he had a serious heart condition and would spend the next ten days in CCH’s Critical Care Unit (CCU) as he awaited an opening at the Ottawa Heart Institute for a pacemaker operation. Gary and Debbie agree, the ten days he spent at CCH not only saved his life, but changed it for the better. “As a former OPP officer, I’ve been in every Hospital across Ontario,
but always from the outside looking in. This time, it was personal. For me, the experience at CCH was life changing. The kindness I received helped me retain my dignity in a stressful situation. I wasn’t just a patient. I was Gary. They really cared and I knew it.” Gary was transported from CCH to the Ottawa Heart Institute, where he benefitted from a successful pacemaker surgery, and was returned back to Cornwall for monitoring. After a final night spent at CCH, Gary was able to finish his recovery at home. In tribute to the kind and professional care he received at Cornwall Community Hospital, Gary nominated four individuals from CCH for Healthcare Hero awards. Grateful patients like Gary Collins can work with our Hospital Foundation to identify doctors, nurses, staff or volunteers who make a positive difference in their lives, providing a donation to CCHF in acknowledgement of their care. To recognize your Healthcare Hero, please contact Cornwall Community Hospital Foundation (CCHF) at: 613-930-4508, or email Christie.hollingsworth@cornwallhospital.ca

For those coping with physical, emotional and social effects of nail fungus, the quest for a safe and effective solution can be frustrating. Known medically as Onychomycosis, nail fungus is typically treated through the use of various topical and oral therapies, but such treatment options have demonstrated limited success or have been known to cause adverse side effects.

A Revitalization Success Story Cornwall’s iconic toy store gets a facelift, helping spark a revitalization in the Heart of the City. » BY ALYSSA MCLEAN
Cornwall is one of Ontario’s oldest communities – a fact that is reflected in many of the buildings that make up the downtown core. One of those buildings is home to Kid’s Korner, an award-winning toy store. Just this year, owners Kevin and Leslie Ouderkirk finished a multi-year renovation project that has transformed the building info a showcase for downtown revitalization. “When we bought the building, we knew that although it was in good shape, we would eventually have to spend some money,” says Kevin. “This is our home away from home, and we wanted to do things right.” One of the first things the Ouderkirks did was to sit down with
122
cornwall LIVING 2018
Dana McLean, who manages the City’s Heart of the City Community Improvement Program. The program supports the renovation of existing buildings in the core of the city. “One of the benefits of the
program is that it encourages property owners to plan properly for their renovation,” says Ms. McLean. “It also provides access to city staff and other community leaders that can provide input into a particular project.” Phase one of the project was to make repairs and improvements to the facade of the building. This included replacing the large second story windows, upgrading the large awning and installing new exterior lighting. Noella Cotnam of Sign It Signs played a big part in the metamorphosis of the exterior by designing a new sign. The vibrant colour and fun caterpillar logo perfectly captures the spirit of the toy store.
“This is our home away from home, and we wanted to do things right Kevin and Leslie Ouderkirk
“We stopped short of renovating the interior because we were not quite sure what to do with the second floor,” says Leslie. “However it soon became apparent that sales were driving a need for expansion, and so we decided to establish a new baby boutique upstairs.” The Ouderkirks once again turned to RayJans Construction to handle the project. This time the work would include building a new interior staircase. “When you are working with an old building, there are always a few surprises,” says Ray Brunet, coowner of RayJans. “We took care to maintain the character of the exposed brick walls and original wood floors. The large windows let in natural light. These features tell the story of the craftsmen who originally built the building in 1936.” The addition of the baby boutique on the second floor resulted in extra space on the main floor. This allowed the Ouderkirks to move product from the basement storage area. “More products on the shelf means more choice for our customers,”
124
cornwall LIVING 2018
says Leslie. “Our customers love the changes and we have seen a positive impact on sales from all of the renovations.” The experience of the Ouderkirks is similar to that of dozens of property owners who have taken advantage of the Heart of the City Community Improvement Program. “The assistance from the Heart
of the City allowed us to make the renovations sooner that we would have been able to otherwise,” says Kevin. “This project has had a positive impact on our neighbours as well.” Other nearby businesses undergoing similar transitions include Pommier Jewellers, PURE Organic Spa, ESCA, Truffles and Table 21. “The transformation of Kid’s Korner looks amazing, and is the latest success story in our façade improvement program,” said Councillor Denis Carr, Chair of the Cornwall Planning Programs Evaluation Group. “Revitalized commercial properties will help attract new residents and new investment to the Downtown and Le Village Business districts.” Over the past 11 years, $13.5 million in financial assistance has been leveraged to secure investments of $67.2 million in the Heart of the City. Andrew and Kristyn have returned to Cornwall after finishing their studies in Oshawa. Andrew has found employment in the I.T. sector, and Kristyn is looking to start her career. With modest student loans and a new car to pay off, the young couple has worked out a budget and have been pre-approved for a $220,000 mortgage. Staying with family has helped them to save money for a down payment, but with summer approaching Andrew and Kristyn are looking for a place to call their own.

This semi-detached is in great shape, with ample living space over two floors. Three bedrooms, two full baths. The house has a good sized backyard that overlooks onto a park. It is in move-in condition, and although there is no garage, there is a brand new shed in the back.
This raised brick bungalow with a single garage was built in 1979 and has been well maintained. It offers 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms with kitchen, dining room, sitting room and family room on the main floor. The house is close to schools and parks and has a large fenced in yard.
This small brick bungalow with a carport has been very well maintained. Two bedrooms and two bathrooms plus a large downstairs family room offers lots of space. The backyard features a large deck and hot tub – perfect for entertaining friends and family.
Verdict: A great starter home, but looking for something a little larger, should little ones come along sooner than expected.
Verdict: A wonderful house, but just too far out of the couple’s price range.
