In 2010, China was in fourth place on the list of Serbia’s biggest foreign trade partners

or quite a few years, China has been the most important foreign trade and financial partner to Serbia in Asia – according to the Serbian Chamber of Commerce report. During the economic sanctions in Serbia, this cooperation was virtually non-existent. Once the sanctions were lifted, the two sides established many business contacts in order to reach agreement on the modalities of future economic cooperation. The most important format of the economic cooperation between the two countries is trade exchange. Chinese investments in Serbia are at a very low level. However, trade exchange has been recording growth in the last eight years with a pronounced trade deficit on the Serbian side which could be a limiting factor in further cooperation. In 2010, China was in fourth place on the list of the biggest foreign trade partners of Serbia, right after Germany, the Russian Federation and Italy. Data from 2010 shows that the foreign trade exchange volume grew by eight percent in relation to 2009. Exports increased two-fold, but still remained quite low (only $4 million), while imports increased by eight percent compared to last year and stood at $1.3 billion. ■
