OSHA Responds to Alarming Number of Trenching Deaths Industry Supports Enhanced Efforts to Protect Workers By Lucy Perry CEG CORRESPONDENT

After charting an alarming 22 trenching deaths the first half of this year, OSHA has made trench safety a national emphasis on inspections. In July, the agency announced it was launching enhanced enforcement initiatives with a goal of protecting workers from known hazards. Industry professional associations support the move. see TRENCHING page 26

KSM Names New Director Doosan Expands in Alaska of Smart Construction Sector Kirby-Smith Machinery (KSM) has hired Dennis Cox as its new director of Smart Construction. Cox will be responsible for the KSM’s strategy and growth initiatives related to Komatsu Smart Construction, including both the intelligent Machine Control line and Komatsu’s related suite of products, services and digital solutions that offer interconnectivity and help streamline the construction process. His office will be located at the heavy equipment distributor’s Dallas branch. Cox brings nearly 20 years of experience related to GPS and machine grade control technology to the position, having worked with various equipment distributors, hardware and service suppliers and contractors in specialist and management roles, including most recently as the integrated controls regional sales manager of another large regional equipment dealer. He has spent the majority of his career in the North Texas market and is familiar with KSM’s customers and the particular challenges they face. Joel Cook, executive vice president & general manager, Construction Group of

KSM, understands how valuable Smart Construction can be for contractors, especially in relation to the current issues surrounding skilled operator shortages. He believes Cox’s experience will serve KSM well in growing its offerings and support capabilities. “Komatsu Smart Construction is a powerful solution for the challenges our customers face in today’s competitive construction environment,” said Cook. “I know Dennis’ wealth of experience and leadership will be instrumental in helping us better partner with customers to achieve the full benefits of this technology.” Cox added, “I look forward to the opportunity to grow with an already established team of professionals who continue to develop their technology skillset and provide an outstanding customer experience. Doosan’s Smart X-Care Enhances Machine Telematics By Eric Olson CEG CONTRIBUTING EDITOR

Doosan Infracore North America recently unveiled its new Smart X-Care telematics monitoring facility at the heavy equipment maker’s headquarters in Suwanee, Ga. The Smart X-Care Machine Monitoring Center (MMC) is a centralized location that receives and disseminates machine telematics data as part of Doosan’s new and enhanced subscription-based offering to its customers. Through the DoosanCONNECT telematics system, engineers and employees at the facility keep track of a Smart X-Care subscriber’s machine on the program’s Dashboard to check for issues such as critical fault codes, upcoming or overdue service, and warranty expirations. Stojan Arezina, an electrical engineer and the telematics division manager of Doosan, explained that the Korean manufacturer still offers most telematics services free of charge to its customers using their DoosanCONNECT smartphone app or by accessing the system on a Web browser. Currently, the Smart-X Care service is available to owners of newly purchased Doosan construction equipment. The monthly fee is $19.99 per month, but once customers buy a new machine, they will receive a free, six-month introductory subscription. Thirty days

Arezina added that the MMC communicates with telematics personnel at Doosan’s equipment distributors to deliver critical information. “It is right there on our big screen, and we can always reference it and share it in real time,” he said. To address a machine issue, he said, “The Smart X-Care system itself actively sends messages to the customer and dealer. Then, the Doosan Telematics [DTM] team

has an opportunity, based on what we are seeing on the big screen, to reach out to customers and dealers and see if they are not doing service because there are parts missing, or they are waiting on parts. It may be that we can provide more technical training. By getting more involved in that customer/dealer communication, hopefully Smart X-Care MMC is speeding help to each side.” As he sees it, having DTM representatives engaged in the process shows Doosan’s “stepped up level of care for our customers and dealers,” according to Arezina. “It is more than we just sold you a

machine and now you are on your own.” Doosan also wants its Smart XCare MMC to enable dealers to improve their service, generate more revenue via parts, use data that it actively sends them to predict what their machines will need and manage their parts and stock levels better, he said. “They can see when we send them a message that ‘Hey, here is a list of the machines that are coming up for service.’ They can go back to their parts department and say, ‘These machines are due for service and will need these parts. Do we have them in stock, or do we need to order them?’” Financial Benefits of Telematics Top Selling Point Arezina joined the company last March, the latest engineer at the heavy equipment manufacturer to create solutions that save time and money for customers of Doosan’s diverse lines of construction and forestry machines. Telematics provides dozers, excavators and other primary construction machines with onboard communication services and applications that communicate with one another via GPS receivers and other devices. Vehicle tracking, the most common application, works by combining a GPS system with onboard diagnostics, typically to map the exact location of a see X-CARE page 56

Astec Industries Designs, Launches Its New PTSC Plant Astec Industries’ Materials Solutions Group has designed and launched its newest portable high frequency screen plant, the PTSC2818VM. The plant’s design and size is the first of its kind for the industry, according to the manufacturer, featuring an 8-ft.wide high frequency screen. Astec’s newest PTSC plant is equipped with an 8 by 18 ft. (2.4 by 5.5 m) top deck and an 8 by 12 ft. (2.4 by 3.7 m) bottom deck. The screen design features externally-mounted vibrators at the ends of the tappets for a more aggressive screening action. Collapses Rarely Survivable; Cu. Yd. of Soil Equals 3,000 Lbs. TRENCHING from page 1

OSHA called on all employers engaged in trenching and excavation activities to act immediately “to ensure that required protections are fully in place every single time their employees step down into or work near a trench.” Doug Parker, assistant secretary for occupational safety and health, said in a matter of seconds workers can be buried under thousands of pounds of soil and rocks in an unsafe trench. He wants to see the increase in the number of workers needlessly dying and suffering serious injuries in trenching incidents stopped. “Every one of these tragedies could have been prevented had employers complied with OSHA standards,” said Parker. “There simply is no excuse for ignoring safety requirements to prevent trench collapses and cave-ins.” The agency reported that 22 deaths in the first half of 2022 surpasses the total of 15 in 2021. In June, two workers aged 20 and 39 died in Jarrell, Texas, when the unprotected trench more than 20 ft. deep collapsed upon them as they worked. OSHA noted that trench shields sat unused beside the excavation. This incident prompted the agency to announce the enhancements. To stress the dangers of disregarding federal workplace safety requirements, OSHA enforcement staff will consider every available tool at the agency’s disposal, said the agency. “These actions will place additional emphasis on how agency officials evaluate penalties, including criminal referrals for federal or state prosecution to hold employers and others accountable.” OSHA compliance officers will perform trench inspections nationwide and may stop by and inspect any excavation site during their daily duties.

Industry Gives Its Blessing The National Utility Contractors Association (NUCA) marked this year’s Trench Safety Stand Down by reinforcing the idea that safety training is key to an employee’s daily activity. The association believes safety training also is critical to a wellfunctioning utility construction job site. “Time and time again, evidence shows that the key to significantly reducing the risks associated with our industry is employee training and reinforcement,” said Mike Flowers, NUCA’s director for safety, training and education. This year, according to the association, 23,000 workers employed by 345 companies on 1,978 job sites participated in a stand down training event the week of June 20 to 24. The goal of the event is to provide those who work in and around trenches and excavations with information about current excavation requirements and safety procedures. OSHA and the North American Excavation Shoring Association (NAXSA) joined forces to host the Colorado Trench Safety Summit in early October. The free event included classroom training, roundtable discussions and live demonstrations. A similar event took place in Southlake, Texas, with the North Texas NUCA chapter in September. Early this year, ANSI announced approval of the updated A10.12 excavation safety standard, Safety Requirements for Excavation. The standard details how to design an excavation plan, including responsibilities, training and duties, assessing underground utilities, water accumulation and stability of adjacent structures and protecting workers from falls, cave-ins and confined spaces.

It applies to all open excavations, including trenches, made in the earth’s surface that require worker and/or property protection. Defining Trench Safety NUCA reported that OSHA’s standard 1926.650, Subpart P on trenching and excavation requires protective systems for trenches that are 5 ft. or deeper. The federal agency warns that trench collapses are rarely survivable because a cubic yard of soil can weigh as much as 3,000 lbs. “Trench hazards are wellknown,” said OSHA, “yet far too many workers continue to be injured or killed during excavation work.” The agency believes trench collapses, or cave-ins, are more likely than other excavation-related incidents to result in worker fatalities. “It only takes seconds to become buried in thousands of pounds of soil.” But trench hazards can be controlled when employers act responsibly, train employees and follow federal standards. OSHA lists steps contractors can take to keep excavation work safe: • Ensure there is a safe way to enter and exit the trench; • Trenches must have cave-in protection — remember to Slope, Shore, Shield; • Keep materials away from the edge of the trench; • Look for standing water or other environmental hazards; and • Never enter a trench unless it is properly inspected The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) warns that working in an unprotected trench is dangerous. The walls can collapse suddenly and without warning. When this happens, workers do not have time to move out of the way. “A small amount of dirt may not seem dangerous, but can weigh more than 3,000 pounds — the

weight of a compact car,” said the organization. “This small amount of dirt is enough to fatally crush and suffocate workers.” Like OSHA, safety experts at NIOSH warn that “workers should never enter a trench that does not have a protective system in place.” The protective system should be designed and installed by a competent person, someone who can identify hazards and is authorized to correct them. Competent person training is available from many sources, noted NIOSH, including insurance companies, trade associations, labor unions and equipment manufacturers. The best way to prevent trench collapse and trenching fatalities is to use other methods, when possible, said NIOSH. Some options include directional boring, relining the pipe, pipe ramming and utility tunneling and pipe jacking. Robots can be used on construction sites to transport, line and join large pipes to protect workers from serious injuries. Additional Advice Caterpillar dealer Blanchard Machinery warns that the fatality rate for excavating is 112 percent higher than general construction. “Trenching is a dangerous job,” said the West Columbia, S.C.based, company. “But you can protect yourself and your team from injury with the right precautions. Anticipate the risks before they become hazards and be proactive with these trench safety tips.” • Understand proper trenching practices Blanchard reiterates that the site manager should implement trenching techniques based on soil, trench dimensions and other sitespecific factors. “Never work in a trench without supporting the sides with a trench box, shoring, or combination of sloping and benching methods,”

said Blanchard. • Follow site-specific trenching safety guidelines Every work site is different, noted the company. “Account for environmental and atmospheric conditions, soil type, trench dimensions and the work you’re doing in creating site-specific safety guidelines.” According to Blanchard, these rules should be safety standards across all trench settings. Never enter a trench with standing water or accumulating water without taking proper precautions to drain and prevent more flow. • Test and inspect trenches regularly Trenches must be inspected before work begins each day to check for hazardous fumes, oxygen levels, water accumulation and environmental changes. The inspector should reinspect trenches after environmental changes and natural events, like nearby blasting work or heavy rain. • Know the soil, environment Soil type and quality are some of the most significant factors to consider when designing a trench. Always conduct utility line tests before trenching. Mark gas, electrical, water and other lines with correct signage and barriers before operating any equipment. “Failure to do so could result in injury and costly damage or fees,” warns Blanchard. • Use a trench box — but don’t rely on it Trench boxes are in place to protect workers in the event of a cavein and cannot always prevent the cave-in itself. Proper barrier placement should include shoring and worker barriers with enough force to be greater than the force coming from the trench walls. Avoid using trench boxes for greater depths than the manufacturer has rated them for and never work inside a damaged barrier.  CEG

FRA Awards $4M to Railroad Projects The Federal Railroad Administration recently awarded more than $4 million to support three state department of transportation projects in two states aimed at upgrading and safeguarding railroad infrastructure. The Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities received more than $1.4 million to support the Alaska Railroad Corporation or ARRC in replacing a howitzer-based avalanche control method with a Remote Avalanche Control System or RACS above ARRC’s Portage Tunnel Door 4 in Portage Valley, Alaska, a remote location approximately 50 mi. southeast of Anchorage. The project will build six fixed RACS installations consisting of five hanging charge towers and one launch charge tower, plus one weather monitoring station. These enhancements will allow ARRC to improve the mitigation of avalanche danger within an essential transportation corridor while better protecting railroad employees, railroad passengers, the traveling public, transported goods and materials, and existing transportation infrastructure. The South Dakota Department of Transportation gets more than $1.8 million to help construct two 1,500-ft. transload tracks to transport lumber and aggregate. A second South Dakota DOT rail project is receiving $800,000 from the FRA to help improve safety along the Rapid City, Pierre and Eastern Railroad by upgrading and installing eight culvert structures. 

Cat’s Tilt Rotate System Will Work With Mini-Excavators Caterpillar Work Tools Division announced new Tilt Rotate System (TRS) models for Cat 302.7 through 310 Next Generation mini-excavators. The new TRS4 and TRS8 S45 plus updated TRS6 models allow attached work tools to rotate 360 degrees and tilt 40 degrees side-toside. This enables the machine to reach more work areas from a single position, while maneuvering tools over, under and around obstructions when excavating, grading ditches, sorting recycle materials or placing pipe. The new TRS models multiply the mini excavator’s versatility and are available in various configurations to match the application. System design includes a top interface that connects the TRS to the carrier machine and a bottom interface that connects various work tools to the TRS. Top interface connections for the TRS4, TRS6 and TRS8 include a choice between an S Type hydraulic-coupler or pin on, while bottom interface options include the Pin

Grabber or S type coupler. All TRS models are standardized with an auxiliary TRSAux1 hydraulic function at the bottom. This allows for the installation of an integrated grapple module when the TRS model is attached to the carrier via the S type coupler system. The TRS6 and TRS8 feature a standard TRSAux2 auxiliary port at the bottom to connect a variety for different hydraulic tools. Sensors for these TRS models work in combination with Cat mini excavator software and a variety of different external reference suppliers for 2D and 3D work applications. Contractor Digs Deep to Relocate Utilities On $58M Project PORT from page 1

Although the Port receives goods from around the world, it has not overlooked its local ties, committing to the construction of a waterfront promenade at the nearby communities of Wilmington and San Pedro. The construction will include a pedestrian bridge suitable for walking and cyclists. Community input weighed heavily in the design features of the parks and the bridge. Revenues from the Port will finance the design and construction of the facilities. The Port is located on the San Pedro Bay, 25 mi. south of downtown Los Angeles and has some 43 mi. of waterfront. The Port and local communities decided to slice off parcels of that real estate into promenades to benefit local residents. The Wilmington Waterfront Promenade project will include construction of a community park, an over-the-water pier deck, parking lots, a playground area and a 2,500sq.-ft. space for commercial development. The project began in 2020 and is scheduled to be completed in 2023 with a budget of $52 million. Dirty Work Sully-Miller Contracting is performing the site demolition and construction of the promenade. After the removal of several buildings, the dirty work of soil remediation began. Like most public works projects of any size, workers on the Wilmington Waterfront Promenade project had to dig deep and relocate utilities. “We did some heavy duty work with underground utilities, DWP waterlines and DWP electrical ductbanks that required deep excavations,” said Raymond Delgadillo, project manager of Sully-Miller. “Of course, we also were dealing with the high water table. In addition, we had to carefully plan how to demo the existing seawall with the tides constantly fluctuating. We have almost completed the water part of our work.” The new concrete walkways will be supported by 74 king pilings, many of which were driven as deep as 60 ft. into the earth. These pilings, together with the sheet pilings, will form the combination wall at the water. Railings at the water’s edge will provide safety. In addition, a set of tidal steps will descend into the water and allow people to see the rise and fall of the tides as the steps are covered by water then uncovered as the water recedes. The project’s $28.5 million phase one will include construction of the cable-anchored pedestrian bridge along Avalon Boulevard. The bridge

promises to be both practical and aesthetically impressive, conveying pedestrians and bicyclists to the new waterfront promenade. The second phase of construction will include an entry plaza and gateway. Construction of the Avalon Pedestrian Bridge and Avalon Gateway is expected to start in 2024. Castro indicated that the expenditure is part of the Port’s 10-year plan to provide more public access to the waterfront, with the investments split between San Pedro and Wilmington. “It’s a very ambitious plan to convert part of an industrial site to public open space,” said Castro. “Money will also be set aside for operations, maintenance and community programs at the parks.” The plan for the promenades also includes public docks to facilitate waterside access between the promenades when they are completed. The Wilmington Waterfront Promenade project and the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) commenced a land swap that opened up the 13-acre property. LADWP performed the demolition of a 500,000-barrel petroleum storage tank on site that had been unused for years. Kenworth T680 Next Gen to Transport U.S. Capitol Tree A Kenworth T680 Next Generation will transport the 2022 U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree from the National Forests in North Carolina to Washington, D.C., with stops en route to a full slate of community celebrations. This year’s U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree — a 78-ft. tall Red Spruce — is scheduled to be harvested Nov. 2 from the Pisgah National Forest in North Carolina. The tour theme is “From the Mountains to the Sea.” Hardy Brothers Trucking was chosen to transport the tree. Founded in 1965, the Siloam, N.C.-based company has more than 100 dedicated drivers and 55 Kenworth trucks — including 11

Installing Tire Inflation Systems Can Improve Cost Reduction By Duane Myears SPECIAL TO CEG

Proper tire maintenance is critical in the performance of all on-road equipment. Installing a tire inflation system on your side dump trailer is one way to reduce costs and keep your trailer moving. Under-Inflation Can Mean Big Losses Under-inflated tires lead to premature tire wear, which means higher operating costs with repetitive replacements and increased fuel consumption. They also contribute to drivability and handling issues. Under-inflation can contribute to stability concerns. Tire Inflation Systems Offer 20 Percent Better Tire Life Tire inflation systems are installed at the customer’s request. MTIS (Meritor Tire Inflation System) is the most commonly installed system at SmithCo. The trailers with these systems typically use Super Single tires, where there is a single tire on each end of the axle instead of dual tires/wheels on each end.

While trimming the weight per axle by approximately 250 lbs. compared to dual tires/wheels, there is a drawback of only having one tire on each end of the axle. If you have a flat, you are down. In this case, the tire inflation system is a great benefit as it keeps the tire inflated to the proper pressure even if it has a slow leak. What’s more, there is a light that is mounted on the trailer that illuminates when the system is putting air into the tires, so there’s a clear indication that a tire has a leak. Bottom line, customers with a tire inflation system typically see a 20 percent or better tire life by keeping the tires at recommended operating pressure. Overall, a tire inflation system is easy to integrate into your regular trailer maintenance schedule and can pay for itself over time with tire cost reductions, minimal down time due to flats and increased fuel milage. HCEA Wraps Up Annual International Convention & Old Equipment Expo By Thomas Berry HCEA

The Historical Construction Equipment Association’s 36th annual International Convention & Old Equipment Exposition was held at the National Construction Equipment Museum in Bowling Green, Ohio, Sept. 23 to 25, 2022. Despite a weather scare and high diesel prices affecting how many machines were brought in, the show was a great success. Several thousand attendees from all over the United States and several other countries enjoyed perfect weather on Friday and Saturday. Approximately 120 antique machines and vehicles were brought in from as far away as New England, Louisiana and Colorado, joining the museum’s fleet

Hilltip Offers Large IceStriker 6000CM Combi Spreaders Hilltip is offering its IceStriker combi spreaders in a 6 cu. yd. capacity, 12-in. pintle chain-drive unit. The 6000CM model is the largest Hilltip model available in the North American market. Along with this size, Hilltip is adding chain-driven options for all other IceStriker combi spreaders, including the 2000, 2800, 3400 and 4200 models. Previously, these models were only offered as auger-driven machines. Hilltip is expanding the option to meet the preferences of all winter care professionals. The new 6000 model will only be offered in the chain-driven system at this time. Customers can expect all chain-driven models to be available for the 2021/2022 season. Designed for ½-ton trucks and larger, the electricpowered IceStriker spreaders (12- or 24-volt dual motors) are now available in capacities of 2.0, 2.8, 3.4, 4.2 and 6.0 cu. yds. They not only offer the ability to spread granular salt, sand and gravel, but also can be transformed into a liquid deicing sprayer — either prewetting material as it’s spread or directly spraying brine to the driving surface for anti-icing applications. Every IceStriker spreader features liquid tanks integrated into both sides of the double-walled poly hopper, which hold up to 220 gal. of liquid. By simply adding the optional pre-wet liquid kit, which includes a pump and spray nozzle, an operator can pre-wet spreading materials to help activate the salt as it’s spread and to reduce material bounce. Furthermore, by adding the optional 6-ft. 7-in. dual spraybar, an operator can now spray brine directly onto the driving surface with a maximum 16-ft. spraying width. This makes the spreaders ideal for all operations, whether they are just getting into liquid applications or are well experienced in brine. The addition of a 40-ft. hose reel and hand-held spray nozzle allows for easier spraying in hard-to-reach areas, such as on sidewalks and steps. Also, an optional bladder tank increases the unit’s overall brine capacity to 550 gal. All spreader and sprayer functions are operated using the advanced StrikeSmart controller. screen, the controller allows operators to customize virtually every aspect of their spreading sessions, such as adjusting vibrator settings, blast settings and much more. Also, the controller allows for exact material feed and spreading width settings (between 2 and 40 ft.), and all systems can be calibrated from within the cab. Using the GPS speed-control function, the spreader will automatically adjust the chain or auger speed depending on vehicle speed to achieve consistent material delivery, while the manual mode allows for setting a fixed speed. The controller also automatically collects and saves essential data. Logging data 24 hours a day, seven days a week, this feature provides operators with spreading reports that can reduce potential liability issues. Accessory buttons are built into the controller, making the actuation of any standard or optional accessories simple. Another exclusive ability with the advanced controller is the optional adjustable spreading symmetry function. Typically only found on larger truck spreaders, this feature allows the operator to adjust the direction of material off of the spinner from the cab-mounted control. This is ideal when working in parking lots or when working on properties adjacent to other businesses, so the operator can ensure that material is only being directed onto a paying customer’s property and away from vehicles. An easy-to-understand graphic indicates the current direction of the material, which can be easily adjusted with the integrated dial. For maximum control and observation of an equipment

fleet, all IceStriker spreaders come standard with Hilltip’s HTrack tracking software option. This allows for complete remote tracking and management of all spreaders from a computer, table or smartphone. One can monitor treatment routes, vehicle speed, GPS location and material usage in real-time. Also, the two-way GPRS communication channel allows application rates to be remotely set and adjusted for each customer’s site, depending on weather conditions. Other standard equipment on the IceStriker combi spreader includes a sealed, weather-resistant motor enclosure, automatic vibrator, integrated tie-down loops, top screen and pre-routed accessory wire for simplified light/rear camera installation. Auger models include an inverted-V structure over the auger drive to reduce heavy start-up loads on the feed mechanism. Additional accessory options include an LED work light, strobe lights, illuminated license plate kit, rear and indicator lights, leg stand for more convenient storage/installation, end material alarm sensor on the spinner, tarp cover and an extended auger for axle loading optimization. Although many people in the construction workforce have never known a world without smart phones or touch screens, Arezina acknowledged Doosan must work to make it easier for older equipment owners and operators to embrace telematics and understand what the technology can do for them. “The way we mitigate that is through training — starting small with basic functions and improving the user interface and user experience designs of DoosanCONNECT,” he said. “That is why I work directly with Korea to suggest how to make it more approachable.” Additionally, Arezina said, “The best-selling points are showing them the financial benefits of telematics. For example, let them see how DoosanCONNECT observes and uses data that can help them keep their machines longer and, therefore, enables them to make more money with their equipment. Plus, reveal to them how DoosanCONNECT can aid them in spending less money on services, have less down time, and more operating hours.”

Dealers Get Monthly Report On Data Results To aid in doing that, the Smart X-Care MMC began a pilot program in September called Dealer Principal Report, which it sends to a select group of Doosan dealers, according to Arezina. The report is designed to, among other things, capture missed revenue due to not addressing diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs), or not heeding an alert about a machine being overdue for service. The monthly dispatch also projects potential revenues generated at a dealership for the next 30 days if all the upcoming machines are correctly serviced. Online, In-Person Dealer Training Available Arezina and his staff also have developed a multi-faceted approach to training dealership personnel, including technicians and salespeople, in understanding the Smart X-Care monitoring service. The how-to series can be downloaded from Doosan’s dealership page online, allowing dealer employees the opportunity to learn the basic functions of telematics and how to perform them, he said. “For example, one [part of the series] is on how to create a new customer in DoosanCONNECT, while another is about finding a user in DoosanCONNECT,” he said. “We have already started rolling out some of the series and are continuing to do so.” Arezina added that another approach he takes is each time a group of dealers come to Doosan for service training, he tries to schedule a telematics-dedicated

session with them for 30 minutes to an hour. Also, he reaches out to individual dealers through DoosanCONNECT to set up personalized training with their telematics employees. “As we all know, workforce turnover is always a problem,” he said. “You may train everyone at a specific dealer on telematics and then a year down the line, the company may have a completely new staff. We tackle that by having continuous training.” Arezina wants to advance the Smart X-Care service by ensuring that at every one of Doosan’s dealerships, there should be at least one person that knows him, knows his telematics team or has a personal connection with them so the dealers feel that they can reach out to the monitoring center at any time. “I always like to say that telematics is not the future; rather telematics is present in time,” he said. “Everyone is using telematics and the data available to us. Now, it is all about what do we do with data.
