Iron Bound Auctions Hosts Texas Sale...63

By Irwin Rapoport

Like the rest of the country, the COVID-19 pandemic hit Texas hard, but despite this medical emergency, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) currently has more than $24 billion worth of highway, bridge and infrastructure construction projects under way – the largest in the state’s history. This is no coincidence as Texas is home to CEG CORRESPONDENT

five of the nation’s 13 most populous cities and as the state continues to attract more people, the demands upon its transportation systems are increasing daily. Congestion on major urban highways is one of the main problems being addressed by TxDOT, and this is being done via the Texas Clear Lanes program, which is upgrading and expanding highways in major cities. White House Releases New ‘The American Jobs Plan’ Associated Equipment Distributors’ (AED) President and CEO Brian P. McGuire; ARTBA President and CEO Dave Bauer; Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM) President Dennis Slater; and National Asphalt Pavement Association (NAPA) President and CEO Audrey Copeland issued statements following the White House releasing its framework for an infrastructure package (the American Jobs Plan).

AED “AED commends President Biden for proposing a bold plan to rebuild the nation’s physical infrastructure, including investments in roads, bridges, highways, broadband, ports, water systems and other projects,” McGuire said. “America’s critical infrastructure is deficient and deteriorating after many years of underfunding. The time is long overdue for the federal government to provide the investments needed to restore the nation’s infrastructure to the envy of the world. There is no better way to put the United States on the path to long-term economic growth and job creation than investments in transportation, water, telecommunications and energy infrastructure. “The legislative process in Congress must proceed expeditiously and in a bipartisan manner. AED looks forward to working with the Biden-Harris administration and lawmakers from both sides of the aisle to enact much-needed infrastructure investments and to identify responsible ways to pay for the proposal without sacrificing America’s productivity and international competitiveness.” ARTBA “It is only fitting President Joe Biden announces his transportation investment plan in Pittsburgh, the city of bridges,” Bauer said. “More than 45,000 U.S. bridges are in poor condition, according to the federal government. Such a data point underscores the scope of very real national infrastructure challenges. “The president’s plan will accelerate a long overdue conversation about how to modernize our roads, bridges, public transit and other infrastructure systems. Members of Congress from both parties will rightly have their own policy thoughts. AEM “The Association of Equipment Manufacturers has long championed a transformational investment in our nation’s infra-

structure that grows our businesses, creates more family-sustaining jobs, improves our quality of life, and protects our environment for the generations to follow,” said Slater. “President Biden’s plan reflects many of the priorities outlined in AEM’s ‘The U.S. Infrastructure Report’ framework, including modernizing aging infrastructure assets to guarantee our global economic competitiveness, expanding broadband connectivity, creating new sector partnerships, boosting work-based learning programs, and ensuring that state and local governments have the fiscal resources they need. NAPA “Asphalt pavements are critical to creating world-class roads, highways and airfields. President Biden’s proposal to renew 20,000 miles of roads will directly benefit from the latest innovative asphalt pavement technologies that are economical, resilient, and environmentally friendly,” said Copeland. “The 150,000 essential, skilled workers throughout our industry stand ready to modernize these roadways. To secure a sustainable future for America’s vital transportation network, we call upon the administration and Congress to approve predictable, multiyear funding for infrastructure renewal by July 4.” Key components of the American Jobs Plan include: • $621 billion for transportation, including roads, bridges, transit, ports and airports as well as electrifying vehicles. • $111 billion to upgrade drinking and wastewater infrastructure. • $100 billion for high-speed broadband infrastructure. • $100 billion to upgrade the U.S. power infrastructure. • $213 billion to “produce, preserve and retrofit affordable and sustainable places to live.” • $137 billion for physical upgrades to public schools, community colleges, childcare facilities, VA hospitals and federal buildings. • $300 billion to invest in U.S. manufacturing and strengthen critical supply chains. • $100 billion for workforce development and jobs training programs. • $400 billion for “expanding access to quality, affordable home- or communitybased care for aging relatives and people with disabilities.” For more information, visit www.aednet.org, www.artba.org, www.aem.org and www.asphaltpavement.org. 

Easton Sales and Rentals Wins Terex Top Dealer Award Easton Sales and Rentals, a U.S. Terex Trucks dealer, has won the 2020 “Top Dealer Award”. In a challenging year, the family-run dealership achieved outstanding results and sold a significant number of articulated haulers, bringing the Terex Trucks TA300 and TA400 to more U.S. customers. Just like anywhere else in the world, 2020 was a challenging year for North America. While the volume of heavy equipment sales and rentals dropped compared to 2019, many construction sites remained open – driving demand for machinery. Across the Terex Trucks network of around 40 dealers in the United States, one of them sold more articulated haulers than any other dealer in North America: Easton Sales and Rentals. That’s why Terex Trucks has presented the family-run business with its annual “Top Dealer Award,” to say thank you for a great sales performance in 2020. “Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, we experienced strong demand for Terex Trucks haulers and had a great number of total orders in our books,” said Jeff Udelson, owner of Easton Sales and Rentals. “Our customers like the TA300 and TA400 because they are robust, durable machines that have a low total cost of ownership. On top of this, Terex Trucks offers a competitive lease program, which is a really great thing in difficult times like the ones we’re living through right now.” Competitive Total Offer As part of the Volvo family, Terex Trucks has a comprehensive finance program offer in cooperation with Volvo Financial Services (VFS). In addition, the TA300 and TA400 are sold with a three-year warranty, telematics and planned maintenance included as standard in North America. The TA300 and TA400 meet the Tier IV

Final emission standards without the need for a diesel particulate filter (DPF). This is achieved via the latest generation selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology, combined with exhaust gas regeneration (EGR) and a variable geometry turbo (VGT), reducing fuel consumption and operational costs. Trucks That Go Where Others Can’t “As U.S. infrastructure projects remain a silver lining in this pandemic and the government has signaled plans to make significant investments to help the economy recover, we want to make sure we’re well-positioned in this important market,” said Daniel Meara, regional sales manager of Terex Trucks. “We expect the demand for construction equipment in North America to pick up in the second half of 2021, and we’re glad to know that with Easton, we have a great partner in the

market.” Over the last few months, the Terex Trucks haulers sold and rented by Easton have been part of big projects in Texas and New Mexico. They have helped build distribution centers for big international courier and e-commerce companies and have been part of two major new high school construction projects. Terex Trucks haulers excel in the toughest applications and are designed to go where others can’t, according to the manufacturer. For customers in Texas, where large amounts of rain can cause the terrain to get very muddy, this was a big selling point. “The Terex Trucks haulers have incredible traction on tough terrain. Our customers tell us that they appreciate the trucks because they are able to work productively in extreme conditions, when other trucks would simply get stuck in the dirt,” Udelson said.

Dedicated to Customers Easton Sales and Rentals LLC. has been working with Terex Trucks for more than two decades. At its two locations in the United States– Houston, Texas, and Albuquerque, N.M. – 25 employees offer a dedicated service to customers. Founded in 2009, the dealership sells and rents earthmoving heavy equipment for jobs such as hauling, trench digging, loading, grading or excavating. Easton’s customers cover a variety of industries including construction and road building. “The team at Easton really deserves the win of the Terex Trucks Top Dealer Award,” Meara concluded. “Their strong commitment to supporting customers is what makes them so successful. Operators know that an Easton mechanic will be on the job site in no time if there’s ever an issue with a machine.” 

Federal Court Rule Clears Way for Fast Road Improvements A major March 2 court decision has given every state in the country a clear understanding of how far federal jurisdiction extends over the nation’s water bodies, eliminating potentially costly delays in transportation system upgrades, according to the American Road & Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA) and National Stone, Sand & Gravel Association (NSSGA). In Colorado v. EPA [Environmental Protection Agency], the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 10th Circuit struck down an earlier ruling by a federal judge in

Colorado that had prevented the Navigable Waters Protection Rule (NWPR) from taking effect in that state. “The decision comes at a critical time,” said ARTBA President and CEO David Bauer. “The clarity provided by NWPR will help deliver transportation projects more efficiently as the country considers infrastructure’s role in our recovery from the pandemic.” “NSSGA’s aggregate producers need clear rules to provide aggregates necessary for vital infrastructure projects,” said NSSGA President and CEO Mike Johnson.

“Our members are also good stewards of our water resources, resulting in the water leaving an aggregates operation often being cleaner than what came out of the tap. This ruling provides the clarity our members need to build America’s infrastructure.” Finalized in April 2020, the NWPR restores clarity to federal wetlands regulations and reduces delays to important transportation improvements by exempting most roadside ditches from federal jurisdiction. ARTBA and NSSGA, who have been working together on the

case since 2015 along with other national association coalition allies, previously maintained that ditches adjacent to roadways serve the necessary safety function of collecting water during and after rain events. Therefore, they should not be regulated as traditional wetlands, which are typically not man-made nor fulfill a specific safety function. The NWPR replaced the EPA’s overly broad 2015 “waters of the United States” regulation, which was blocked by federal courts in 28 states before it was repealed. Colorado had been the only state

not to enact the NWPR after a lower court held the rule could cause “irreparable harm” to the state’s waters. Litigation over the NWPR continues in multiple district courts across the country, but the 10th Circuit ruling means the NWPR takes effect nationwide while that litigation proceeds. ARTBA and NSSGA continue to participate in multiple court cases defending the NWPR. For more information, visit www.artba.org or www.nssga.org. 

John Deere Rolls Out New Performance Tiering Strategy Developed in response to evolving customer needs and expectations, John Deere launched its Performance Tiering Strategy, delivering a range of products at different levels of capability and user experience. Available first on the wheel loader lineup, the Performance Tiering Strategy supports customers by providing machine solutions built for various applications and jobs to enhance profitability and efficiency. Moving away from the traditional series letter designations, the Performance Tiering Strategy provides three tiers of machines — G tier, P tier and X tier. “Every job site is unique, and customers want machine solutions that can be personalized to meet their diverse needs, including performance, price and comfort,” said Jason Daly, global director, production systems, technology and marketing, John Deere. “By offering three tiers, customers can move up or down the spectrum to find the right mix of features, performance and innovation for their business and application.” The Performance Tiers are defined as: • Adding a premium edge, the X-tier models are built with the most innovative John Deere technology and features, delivering the highest levels of productivity, efficiency and customer experience. • P-tier models can be counted on to produce at high levels, day in and day out. Advanced features deliver exceptional performance, efficiency, comfort and service life in demanding, high-production applications. • The G-tier models are practically equipped and economical, providing proven capabilities with the reliability and

ruggedness expected from John Deere. These machines are ideal for customers in need of a reliable machine to complete common light- to medium-duty tasks. The 444-724 P-tier machines reflect the performance capabilities and features that most customers expect from John Deere, such as those found on the current L-Series wheel loaders, including a redesigned cab, standard parallel lift Z-Bar loader linkage, high-lift plus option, electrohy-

The G-tier models are practically equipped and economical.

draulic controls and dual return-to-dig settings. A highly productive and efficient 5-metric-ton wheel loader, the 644 Xtier features E-Drive technology, comprises a diesel-electric drivetrain and exemplifies the type of innovative features that distinguish the X tier, according to the manufacturer. The 644 G-tier is the first model to be available in the lineup of G-tier wheel loaders. Leveraging proven components and technologies, the 644 G-tier is equipped with an all-new cab designed to boost operator comfort and productivity. Customers can customize the machine through a variety of base-level packages, including axles, tires, ride control, seats, radio and rear chassis work-light selections. With the 644 G-tier machine, John Deere delivers a solution ideal for light to medium construction jobs, such as stockpiling, short load-and-carry, truck and hopper loading, and material handling. Designed and manufactured by John Deere, all tiered machines are backed by the same level of support that customers have grown to rely on — including John Deere Connected Support and a five-year subscription to JDLink. Customers can distinguish the different levels of tiering by not only the attributes and capabilities, but also by the distinct branding and design cues on the machines. The John Deere X and P machines are now available for purchase in the United States and Canada, and the 644 G machine is available in Canada and other global markets. Other product categories will follow the Performance Tiering Strategy over time. For more information, visit www.JohnDeere.com/Findyourfit. 

Case Construction Debuts Factorty-Fit Control Dozers Case Construction Equipment has introduced factory-fit machine control on its 750M through 2050M dozers. The new offering includes factory installed and calibrated 2D, dual mast 3D and SiteControl CoPilot precision construction solutions from Leica Geosystems. This option simplifies acquisition and allows dozer owners to group the precision solution of their choice in with the initial purchase of the machine. It also combines all elements of the investment into a single payment, financing package and interest rate — making ordering and implementation seamless. “When the machine arrives at the dealer, it is calibrated and ready to go,” said Jeremy Dulak, product manager, Case Construction Equipment. “The machine and the system are purpose-built together and calibrated using Case World Class Manufacturing

[WCM] processes, ensuring system integrity and helping dozer owners and operators get up and running immediately once they’ve decided on a machine.” Factory-fit machine control also increases residual/resale value and gives dozer owners the confidence that the system was purposebuilt with the machine and meets all quality and performance standards intended by the manufacturer. “Machine control continues to evolve and adoption continues to grow throughout the industry as contractors realize the gains in productivity, efficiency and quality,” said Dulak. “This makes it easier than ever for Case dozer buyers to implement machine control and realize those benefits immediately.” For more information, visit www.CaseCE.com. 

Montana County Approves Natural Gas Pipeline Permit BOZEMAN, Mont. (AP) A floodplain permit to place a natural gas pipeline under the Gallatin River in Montana was approved as part of a larger project to build a vacation rental destination on an island in Gallatin Gateway, county officials said. The Gallatin County Planning Department issued the permit to NorthWestern Energy, granting permission to place a 2-in. (5 cm) pipeline up to 15 ft. (5 m) below the riverbed about 225 ft. (70 m) downstream of the Mill Street bridge, The Bozeman Daily Chronicle reported. Company officials said the Riverbend Glamping Resort project would use about half the natural gas capacity of the pipeline, while the remaining will be made available to other utility customers. NorthWestern said it would bore the pipeline deep enough to prevent floatation, collapse or lateral movement and would complete construction in the winter and early spring to avoid flooding impacts. It also said natural gas is unlikely to enter the river because it has a low solubility, meaning if it leaked it would escape into the air.

“The main concern with natural gas is explosion potential,” the company said. “In elevated concentrations it can escape quickly from water, causing an explosive hazard in poorly ventilated or confined areas, none of which are present at the proposed bore site, and is why the pipeline is not encased in conduit and odorant is added.” County Floodplain Administrator Sean O'Callaghan said he approved the applica-

tion because it complied with regulations. “The project will be located below ground and is being installed in such a way that there will be no disturbance to the bed or banks of the river, and minimal disturbance to upland locations, meaning that increased risk of flooding due to the project is expected to be negligible,” O'Callaghan said. Hundreds of people raised concerns about the pipeline last year when the NorthWestern

applied for the permit. Peggy Lehmann, a landowner near the proposed resort, argued against the project and is working with Protect the Gallatin River in opposing the permits. “The risk of damage to the river and ecosystem caused by boring and/or pipeline construction is being put ahead of community concerns at the expense of serving one person's desire to put a business in the floodplain,'' Lehmann said. She argued the pipeline should not have been approved because it would affect aquatic wildlife, the river, the habitat and public recreation. She also said there could be significant consequences if the pipeline broke. NorthWestern spokesperson Jo Dee Black said no additional permits are needed to install the pipeline. But the installation is contingent upon a floodplain permit for the Riverbend Glamping Resort, which is currently under review. That permit is also contingent upon approval of a floodplain permit for the resort, which would include trailers, tiny homes and wagons for guests. 

Two New Road Builders Grow Doosan Forestry Lineup Doosan Infracore North America LLC extends its log loader product offering with the new Doosan DX300LL-5 and DX380LL-5 road builders. The DX300LL-5 and DX380LL-5 road builders are designed for use in forestry and logging applications. Within the forestry industry, they are operated in access road development, timber harvesting, log loading and mill work. The road builders are often the first machines on a site, used to build access roads or clear a path for other forestry equipment. Customers also can find uses for them in construction demolition or crushing tasks. These models are iterations of the current DX300LL-5 and DX380LL-5 log loaders. They provide a package designed to perform road-building tasks. Customers can carry out the tasks needed on a typical forestry access site with a complete product offering. Comfort, Power Due to the nature of work that the DX300LL-5 and DX380LL-5 perform, they offer exceptional power and operator comfort, according to the manufacturer. Operators can stay comfortable in the The DX300LL-5 and DX380LL-5 road builders are designed for use in forestry and logging applications. A standard excavator cab simplifies machine transport due to its DX300LL-5 DX380LL-5 lower height. Extra cab guarding is available, further protecting the machine to reduce downtime. The road builders pair parts of Doosan log loaders and excavators for maximum efficiency and power. The models combine a log loader mainframe with an excavator boom and arm front configuration. Traditional excavator attachments are available to pair with the new road builders. Road builders and attachments can remove tree stumps and logs, and clear paths for access roads to the harvesting sites. Durability, Reliability The road builders also feature design elements to enhance machine durability and reliability. The DX300LL-5 and DX380LL-5 road builders’ undercarriages can forge across rough terrain. The high, wide undercarriage travels across exposed stumps, brush and forest foliage. Heavy-duty track links and fulllength track guiding guards increase undercarriage durability. Research Company Predicts Post-COVID ARTBA Veep Sant Rebound for Off-Highway Vehicle Sector Earns Assoc. Safety Pro Credential

By Alastair Hayfield SPECIAL TO CEG

As global economies continue to reel from the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic, the vaccine roll-out gives reason for optimism. The talk now is of economies bouncing back after a poor 2019 and a catastrophic 2020. In its latest report on off-highway vehicles, Interact Analysis predicts a scenario where pent-up demand will be a driver for significant growth in the sector, as economic wheels get back on track. While growth sunk to a mere 2.6 percent in 2020, Interact Analysis’s research predicts 6.5 percent growth in 2021, and an overall CAGR of 3.6 percent up to 2029. Furthermore, electrification of certain classes of off-highway vehicles is expected to continue at a rapid pace. Off-Highway Vehicles, COVID-19 Effect Not even the virus has stopped the unprecedented modernization and extension of China’s infrastructure network. The figures in the accompanying table tel the story: While the figures in red describe tumbling growth in 2020 for many different machinery types across most of the globe as countries battled with the virus and production slowed or shut down, in China things stabilized quite quickly, as rigorous measures to combat the virus were enforced. Production got back to normal by May 2020, and demand for off-highway equipment resumed. Aerial work platforms saw a massive 74 percent hike in sales, telehandlers more than 40 percent and excavators more than 37 percent. 2021 – Year of Great Bounce Back While China has mitigated the overall impact of the pandemic on the global off-highway vehicle market, 2020 was undeniably a shocker for the industry, but it’s an industry poised to make a comeback, with material handling equipment leading the field by 2025, when sales are forecast to surpass those of agricultural machinery. (Agricultural machinery has not previously been included in the scope of the off-highway vehicles report.) 2019/20 saw a slowdown in sales of material handling equipment, but the surge in online shopping and eCommerce caused by the virus is likely to be a significant long-term driver for investment in machinery such as lift trucks, particularly as new warehouse automation projects come on stream. Interact Analysis has detected the likelihood of future healthy demand from SMEs and forecasts a return to doubledigit growth rates by 2022, with sales of approximately 2.4 million units by 2023. All this, of course, rides on the battle with the virus. Overall unit shipments for the construction segment decreased by 2.5 percent in 2020, due to the impact of COVID-19, giving a growth rate of minus 2 percent. But

American Road & Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA) Senior Vice President of Safety & Education Brad Sant has earned the Associate Safety Professional (ASP) credential from the Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP), which establishes standards and certifies competency criteria in professional safety practice. The responsibilities of safety professionals continue to expand, requiring continued investment in their base of knowledge. BCSP certifications are internationally accredited by the highest of qualifications set by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). A veteran of more than two decades at ARTBA, Sant serves as managing director of the association’s Traffic Safety Industry Division and is executive director for safety and education programs for ARTBA’s Transportation Development Foundation. He also manages ARTBA’s federal contracts program, overseeing safety training, education and outreach with awards totaling more than $2 million annually. In addition to his duties at ARTBA, Sant serves as chairman of the board of the Safety Equipment Institute (SEI), a subsidiary of ASTM International, one of the world’s largest sales of construction vehicles in China sustained solid voluntary standards development organizations. growth of 26.6 percent, otherwise the global figures would To earn the ASP credential, candidates must perform at have been far worse. least half of the professional level safety tasks that exist on The size of the Chinese market in 2020 was close to work sites. Electrification — Drivers, Barriers For more information, visit www.artba.org.  The research shows that more than 36 percent of shipments of off-highway vehicles will be electrified machinery by 2029. However, the overwhelming majority of these will be smaller machines. Research shows that there are good reasons for using BEV technology in larger construction vehicles, such as lower TCO and environmental concerns; but there are also significant barriers, such as upfront costs, lack of charging infrastructure and charging downtime. Electrification of compact construction vehicles offers many obvious benefits, minimizing emissions and noise levels, allowing the equipment to be used in enclosed environments such as in mines, buildings and in other noise-sensitive areas. For many of the environments where material handling typically works, such as airports and logistics centres, there is already a high demand for “greener” equipment. These places will continue to adopt electrification aggressively. For more information, visit www.interactanalysis.com. 

GSSI, a manufacturer of ground penetrating radar (GPR) equipment, announced that InstroTek Inc. will serve as national and international distributor of GSSI’s PaveScan RDM continuous asphalt density gauge. PaveScan provides accurate real-time measurements to ensure pavement performance and quality. Based in Research Triangle Park, N.C., InstroTek is a global leader in products and technology development for the construction and raw materials industry, with sales and services offices across the United States. The company holds more than 20 construction materials testing patents, including the first portable nuclear gauge calibration device and the first automatic equipment for accurate density measurements of course and absorptive asphalt samples. InstroTek equipment is used for accuracy and reliability in materials testing around the world. “We are excited to add the unique PaveScan system to our industry-leading materials testing instrumentation,” said InstroTek President Ali Regimand, who has more than 30 years of experience in research, development, design and manufacturing of portable and laboratory-based product. “This system fits well into InstroTek’s

offerings, which will undoubtedly help our customers more efficiently construct high performance and quality asphalt pavements.” “PaveScan has the potential to transform the way asphalt density is measured. InstroTek’s long standing relationships in the pavement industry and commitment to customer service and support is an essential step forward in introducing this innovative solution to the world,” said GSSI Vice President of Sales and Marketing Paul G. Fowler. Instrotek will exclusively represent the PaveScan to paving contractors, pavement management, materials test laboratories and municipalities in the United States, while GSSI will continue to work with Federal and State agencies. Internationally, InstroTek will maintain sales and product support via its international distribution network of partners. The PaveScan RDM system is ideal for uncovering problems that occur during the paving process, including poor uniformity and significant variations in density. By avoiding these problems, PaveScan RDM helps avoid such premature failures as raveling, rutting, cracking and deterioration on pavements and joints. Wirtgen’s Placer/Spreader Takes Lead On Paving Train When road surfaces and paths are paved over preplaced reinforcing steel, the concrete can often only be supplied from the side. Wirtgen’s WPS 62i/WPS 62 placer/spreader is a practical choice for this application. As the first machine in the Wirtgen paving train, it travels over the reinforcement in front of the slipform paver and texture curing machine. A truck feeds the concrete from the side, which the placer/spreader then evenly distributes over the entire working surface. The WPS 62i/WPS 62 is available with two different scraping units: in imperial units with working widths between 12 and 24 ft. and in metric units with working widths from 4.00 to 7.5 m. With both of them, the concrete can be laid up to 20 in. (50 cm) thick.

Maximum Machine Availability Due to Flexible Conversion Due to the hydraulically telescoping machine frame and concrete scraper unit, the 2-track placer/spreader can be easily adapted to any job site situation. Due to its fully modular design with standard hydraulic quickchange couplings, the WPS 62i/WPS 62 also can be easily converted and quickly prepared for transport to the next location. Standardized Operating Concept — for Entire Wirtgen Paving Train Operators also benefit from simple, standardized operation of the entire paving train. This is because Wirtgen’s development experts have applied the same operating used on the current series of slipform pavers and texture curing machines for the WPS 62i/WPS 62. 

Women Leaders in Construction Discuss Career Success CAREERS from page 1

training, we are no longer an anomaly,” said Debbie Dickinson, CEO of Crane Industry Services. “Women are gaining ground in terms of titles, respect and awareness that we can do skilled work safely and proficiently.” Dickinson’s Villa Rica, Ga., small business is an NCCER-accredited construction training and certification sponsor. “Women are embracing careers in this industry because the jobs are interesting, pay well and we enjoy the work,” she added. Dickinson is one of three featured here who are opening doors for the next wave of woman to enter the field. Part of the Solution An assistant superintendent at Skanska USA, Johana Godoy launched her construction career as a project engineer. Within a few months, she’d found her passion in field coordination, shifting her career path to the supervisor’s role. Today, she is responsible for logistics planning and daily construction activities on an active airfield at San Francisco International Airport (SFO). Initially a pre-med student, Godoy became interested in pursuing a career in construction after visiting a project site with a family friend. She was struck by the complexity of project planning and coordination. “It was curiosity about how materials were picked and fabricated, to learn how design even starts,” she said. When she became a project engineer, she realized she wanted to be part of day-to-day planning. “I saw how complex it gets. It involves not only my project team but design, the client, project manager, the subcontractors. Being in the middle of all of those teams and bringing them together to get the design to a live aspect is what drew me.” The work has its challenges, but sometimes it’s even harder because of inherent factors. “Construction is challenging,” said Godoy, but on top of that, “it’s rare to see a woman on the field side.” One challenge is being seen as a leader in the field, the supervisor of the project. It means “having the patience to allow the team to see the skills you bring and the knowledge you have to start seeing you as a leader,” she said. Another challenge is proving that the solutions she presents are worth consideration. “I have happened onto a senior supervisor and said, ‘These are the challenges I’m facing. Can you help me get my voice out there?’” Presented by the male supervisor, the plan

ous, ask questions, speak up and don’t be afraid to say what you want and where you want to take your career. Don’t let obstacles be a block to your career.”

went through. “It can be frustrating, but I stick to patience and allow different teams to see that the solutions I bring end up being implemented. And trust is built.” Godoy also faces the challenge of simply being a distraction. Women supervisors aren’t often seen in the field, and just walking on job sites brings curiosity. “I have to readjust the focus back to the project,” she said. Through the Skanska Women’s Network (SWN), Godoy sees beyond the challenges to the chance to create opportunities for the next woman up. An employee resource group focused on retaining and developing women in the industry, SWN promotes and supports a gender-inclusive culture. “The next woman needs to open doors to diversify what the typical construction field looks like now,” Godoy said. During a Skanska supervisor development program, she chatted with a fellow supervisor working with a young project engineer drawn to the field. “He wanted to know how I got in the field. I shared my background, spoke up about my leaders at the time. I told him if she’s interested in doing this work, give her the opportunity to run a smaller project and go from there.” The conversation resulted in a telephone

introduction between Godoy and the young woman. “He said of me, ‘If she can do it, you definitely can do it.’ That actually reassured me,” said Godoy. “Sometimes we need a little encouragement, and it’s nice to know that me going outside the mold can open diversification in the field.” Godoy said ultimately that she wants to

move back to the office side to learn more about cost, to ultimately achieve a senior position as an operations manager. “Although things are constantly changing in the industry, women still have a way to go. But in SWN I have a network I can rely on if I need reassurance.” She advises other women considering a career in construction to find their passion. “Find the aspect of construction that interests you,” she said. “There are so many avenues, it can be overwhelming. Be curi-

Using Her Voice The biggest obstacle Natasha Ozybko sees for women seeking a career in the asphalt road construction sector is finding their voices. Regional sales manager of Arkema Road Science, Ozybko believes the challenge is finding your voice in a room full of men. “You were hired for a reason,” she said to women in the construction industry. “Your employer sees value in you. Make sure you’re heard.” Based in Atlanta, Ga., Ozybko also is president and co-founder of Women of Asphalt (WofA). A national coalition supporting women in all aspects of the asphalt industry, WofA offers mentoring, education and advocacy. The organization also encourages women to seek careers in the asphalt industry. Ozybko said when WofA was launched in 2017, there were approximately 7,000 women in the asphalt industry. “Those of us who traveled never saw a lot of women. It almost feels like we’re coming out of the shadows now,” she said. Today, it’s common to see women paver operators, women in asphalt labs and women project managers, she said. “The industry is acknowledging the great work we do.” Now, when she talks about women pursuing careers and gaining support in the industry, the response is one of acceptance. “Every man I talk to asks ‘What can we do?’ I tell them, ‘Support our local branch in your state.’” She said she thinks men want to encourage women. “All the men I’ve met support having women in the industry.” Currently working on her MBA, Ozybko’s career goal is to run a company. She’s a great advocate for women considering a career in the asphalt sector. “It’s a great job to get into. It was not on my radar, and it’s not the sexy job people are looking for.” But, she pointed out, “You don’t have to have a degree” to carve out a successful career in the industry. “Or, you can have a PhD,” she added. “There’s room for everyone and a job for every skillset.” see CAREERS page 58

Compact track loaders can operate in places skid steers would struggle including uneven, muddy, sandy and snowy terrain.

Skid steers are great on harder surfaces like concrete and asphalt, especially when equipped with hard tires.

Differences in Skid Steer Loaders, Compact Track Loaders

How to Choose Between These Machines It’s easy to look at a skid steer and a CTL and assume the only difference between the two is tires versus tracks — but there’s much more to it than that, especially when it comes to deciding which one is needed on the job site.

By Jason Riley RDO EQUIPMENT COMPANY

It’s the most popular piece of equipment on construction jobsites. It has been and remains a consistent, high-selling machine in the construction industry. And it has been around for six decades. The skid steer loader is a must-have in virtually every construction fleet, from general builders to landscapers, and even those offering snow and ice management services. This small yet mighty machine proved to offer numerous benefits on various jobsites and gave way to inspire a new take on it: the compact track loader (CTL). Skid Steer or Compact Track Loader The CTL is designed to tackle tasks similar to that of a skid steer. Hallmarked by a tracked design instead of tires, it offers different operational abilities compared to its sister machine. It’s easy to look at a skid steer and a CTL and assume the only difference between the two is tires versus tracks — but there’s much more to it than that, especially when it comes to deciding which one is needed on the jobsite. Back to Basics The first step in deciding between a skid steer or compact track loader is to understand the basic features and traits of each, and how those translate into unique advantages on various jobsites. see LOADERS page 46

Bobcat Launches M3-Series Compact Loader Line to Meet Customer Needs To meet a variety of customer needs and budgets, Bobcat Company announced the launch of the new M3-Series compact loader line, adding to its extensive, growing line of compact equipment. Four new skid-steer and compact track loader models are now available by limited release in North America through select dealers. The new M3-Series line represents the newest addition to the Bobcat compact loader family, designed to deliver enhanced performance and value to meet a wide range of customer needs and expectations. The series was developed to specifically support customers who are looking for more practical features with pricing to match, while complementing the R-Series lineup and maintaining the high standards of reliability, durability and performance established by Bobcat. “As an industry leader, we are always looking for opportunities to introduce our expanding lineup of Bobcat products to more customers,” said Matthew Kettner, director of product management at Doosan Bobcat North America. “With the new M3-Series, the high-performance and reliability Bobcat is known for is built into every machine, combined with practical options to meet the needs and budgets of every customer.” Building on the established M2-Series loader, the new M3-Series is designed with the Bobcat turbo-charged diesel engine, an innovative new fuel system, simplified configurations and fewer ancillary options combined with new modern decal styling and more. The four new M3-Series 500 platform size model loaders include the S510 and S590 skidsteer loaders and the T550 and T595 compact track loaders. Bobcat Engineered Performance The series is powered by 2.4-liter Tier IV Bobcat engines with a new fuel system, offering a range of horsepower from 55 to 70. The engine meets Tier IV regulations without a diesel particulate filter (DPF), reducing downtime that occurs with DPF regeneration and long-term DPF maintenance costs. The high-efficiency hydraulic pumps are configured precisely for each model’s specific operating capacity and matched to cylinder size and loader lift capacity. This provides better breakout forces and faster cycle times to enhance power and overall operator productivity and efficiency, according to the manufacturer. Bobcat engines also feature a robust combustion chamber that can handle more pressure and produces more usable horsepower and torque, meaning optimal performance for pushing, digging, lifting and operating a variety of attachments. Job-Matched Lift Arms The M3-Series durable lift-arm design and a choice of lift paths helps meet the unique needs of each job site. The S510 and T550 models feature a radius lift path to provide maximum reach truck bed height. The S590 and T595 models offer a vertical lift path for higher lift capacity and to achieve more reach at full lift height, keeping the load closer to the machine while the loader arms are raised. Comfort Cab, Leading Visibility The M3-Series offers a roomy interior with a standard adjustable suspension seat and large entry to accommodate different sized operators. The cab forward design and opti-

mal all-around visibility keeps operators more connected to the work site. The enclosed cab machines feature a pressurized interior space to repel dust and debris and enhances the efficiency of optional heating and air conditioning. Service, Maintenance Made Easy Bobcat loaders are designed to provide fast and easy maintenance. Engine checkpoints are within close reach, as the large, swing-open tailgate provides convenient access to key maintenance points and the tip-up cab brings accessibility to hydraulic and hydrostatic components. Uptime Protection A new fuel system in M3-Series loaders makes low fuel levels more forgiving. Cold-weather operation is improved and a variety of features, including a self-priming pump and a new fuel pre-filter, make maintenance and service more convenient. Additional standard uptime features include automatic machine shutdown, on-board diagnostics and battery run-down protection to monitor engine, hydraulic and battery functions. M3-Series loaders are designed for delivering better productivity where it counts, keeping machines out of the shop and on the work site. Attachment Versatility The Bobcat Bob-Tach attachment mounting system comes standard with the M3-Series loaders, making it possible to quickly change attachments across Bobcat’s extensive offering of dozens of different compatible attachment products. Compact Track Loader Offers Different Operation Abilities LOADERS from page 42

Both are jobsite proven as dependable, efficient machines known for exceptional maneuverability. Able to turn on a dime, skid steers and compact track loaders can operate in tight or awkward spaces where turning radius isn’t generous. Skid steers are lighter than track loaders, making them easier to transport, often with less time and cost. Building on 60 years of trusted, dependable operation, they continue to have a solid reputation in the construction world, thanks to manufacturers like John Deere that have built quality machines throughout the years. CTLs have the edge over skid steers in terms of operator comfort. Their smooth operation is a bit more forgiving than the rougher ride of a skid steer. Tracks also cause less disruption to the ground, reducing site clean-up time compared to a skid steer. Once the basics are understood, it’s time for a closer look at what separates the skid steer and the compact track loader. Most often, the decision really hinges on where the machine is going to be used. Location, Location, Location Not just true in the real estate world, loca-

tion comes into play as a deciding factor between a skid steer and compact track loader because each machine is designed to perform its best in certain conditions. Skid steers are great on harder surfaces like concrete and asphalt, especially when equipped with hard tires. While compact track loaders are able to operate on these surfaces, the harsher ground is tougher on tracks and can cause accelerated wear. Rocky conditions are also much tougher on CTLs, with the possibility of a track being damaged or cut by sharp objects. That said, skid steer operators too must take caution on this terrain to avoid puncturing tires. Conversely, compact track loaders can operate in places skid steers would struggle including uneven, muddy, sandy, and snowy terrain. Tracks navigate well on these surfaces and the added stability makes a compact track loader more productive and capable of better lifting and breakout force. While location is perhaps the most important factor in choosing a skid steer or compact track loader, it’s not the only one. Like any decision, a machine has to make sense on the bottom line, which is why cost considerations are the next area to examine in this debate.

Dollars, Cents Operating and ownership costs vary between skid steers and compact track loaders. In terms of time investment, skid steers and compact track loaders require virtually the same commitment to preventative maintenance. The only differentiating part is tires vs. tracks, and both of those should be checked on a regular basis — tire pressure on skid steers, track tension and adjustment on CTLs. A pro tip for checking track tension: resist the instinct to make them too tight. A little sag in the tracks is good, as overtightening can lead to undercarriage issues and accelerated track wear. Looking at upfront and short-term costs, the skid steer comes out as the more economical choice. The price tag of a compact track loader is higher than a comparablysized skid steer. And the biggest wear item of a CTL, the tracks, is more expensive than skid steer tires. Evaluating long-term costs, compact track loaders have a bit of an edge. Despite a common misconception, tracks last several hundred hours longer than skid steer tires, in comparable operating situations. A midquality track typically lasts three to four

times longer than conventional tires, with proper use and care. Another factor to consider is downtime cost. If clean ground conditions become sloppy, a skid steer may not be able to work. A compact track loader, however, is designed to perform in adverse ground conditions, and the day’s productivity won’t be halted due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances. Choosing Wisely Reviewing these three key considerations, it’s easy to see just how individualized the choice is for a skid steer or compact track loader. A company that sees the majority of time spent on asphalt or concrete surfaces is going to get results with a skid steer and pay a lower initial cost. Conversely, a contractor whose jobsite characteristics predominantly include uneven or sandy terrain, or those who do a good amount of work in rainy and snowy weather may find the track loader is worth the upfront cost and the investment will pay off in the long run. Keep in mind the basics, consider location, and check overall costs when making the decision between a skid steer or a compact track loader. 

knees and up to 4.5 in.more foot room. The cab also features a new level of operator experience thanks to available Bluetooth radio, improved speakers and speaker placement, and a new antenna placement for a better signal. The MAX-Series enhances comfort with a highly pressurized, all-weather cab. The optional pressurized cab’s improved seal allows it to stay quieter and more resistant to outside dust and debris. Heat and cold levels are further maintained with an updated HVAC system, allowing for better circulation and improved defrosting capabilities. Ease of Use The MAX-Series makes operators’ work easier in addition to making it more comfortable. The new cab provides maximum visibility, featuring floor to ceiling glass area made possible by all clear sides and a frameless door. This gives the operator 52 percent more glass area in the optional enclosed cab compared to previous ASV models. That allows 360-degree visibility with minimal obstructions to the operator’s line of sight, providing a better view of the attachment and surroundings. Visibility is further improved with stan-

dard LED lighting and optional side lighting. The cab has a next generation feel, due to an optional new 7-inch touch-screen display. The simple-to-use screen includes all vital monitoring tools, provides a view of the backup camera and integrates with service history and schedules, such as engine oil changes and other maintenance needs. Passcode operator lockout also is available. In addition to the display, operators will see more ease of use as a result of improved, intuitive switch locations and operator controls. Control is further enhanced with a new dual throttle option, allowing contractors to operate at a set RPM with joystick controls and increase the RPM with the foot throttle without needing to adjust the dial.

brush and debris around key areas, such as lights, the AC condenser and rear screen. Operators also can choose to include a factory-installed full rear brush guard, as well as a heavy-gauge, falling object protective structure (FOPS) level 2 cab — a feature previously only on the RT-120 Forestry.

Reliability ASV built the new cab with a number of features to ensure long-term reliability. New wiring harnesses and fuse panels are fully sealed, water tight and are installed with a design that further protects the electronics. The new standard cab platform also brings the ability to add heavy-duty guarding to other MAX-Series machines. Previously the option was only available on the RT-75 Heavy-Duty and RT-120 Forestry. The configuration includes metal guarding against

Posi-Track Innovations In addition to the new, operator-inspired features, the MAX-Series includes the ASV performance operators have come to expect. ASV purpose-builds its Posi-Track loaders from the ground up to include the company’s rubber track system, allowing for a smoother ride over every type of terrain. Posi-Track loaders maximize ground contact, virtually eliminating track derailment and facilitating maximum performance on steep slopes. The high number of contact

Safety Operators can work in comfort and improved safety with the MAX-Series. In addition to being able to better see their surroundings, the machines include the industry’s first compact loader roof escape hatch, allowing operators to get out quickly in emergency situations. Models also include rollover protection (ROPS) and reinforced windows for impact resistance.

points and wide tracks also provide low ground pressures. In addition, all models have superior ground clearance, allowing the machines to work in more places, in a wider range of conditions, and more comfortably than competitive equipment, according to the manufacturer. ASV Posi-Track loaders feature leading hydraulic and cooling efficiencies. Drive motors transfer torque to the internal-drive sprockets and internal rollers reduce friction loss in the undercarriage, allowing for maximum performance. In addition, all machines include large line sizes, hydraulic coolers and direct-drive pumps — rather than belt-driven pumps — transferring more flow and pressure directly to the attachment and preventing power loss. ASV’s advanced cooling system helps contractors operate MAX-Series machines at 100 percent load, 100 percent of the time in ambient temperatures up to 118F, according to the manufacturer. The MAX-Series is backed with ASV’s new 2-year/2,000-hour warranty. The warranty covers tracks for the entire period and includes the industry’s first and only noderailment guarantee. Record-Breaking Dollars Keep Contractors Busy in Texas MONEY from page 1

than any other state and, if trends continue, the population will increase from nearly 30 million to 47 million by 2050. This will also translate into a massive increase in the number of cars and commercial vehicles. TxDOT, in its 2021 Progress Report released in February, highlights the ongoing construction projects across the state. In the past fiscal year alone, the agency approved more than $7 billion in construction and maintenance contracts and its payments to contractors increased 26 percent year over year from fiscal year 2019 to 2020. In addition to improving mobility, the projects are also addressing safety concerns related to aging infrastructure and roads and bridges that no longer meet current design standards. “This is a historic time for our state’s transportation system during the COVID 19 pandemic because it’s how vital goods and services are delivered,” said Texas Transportation Chairman J. Bruce Bugg Jr. “This wouldn’t be possible without the 12,000 women and men at TxDOT who are dedicated to ‘Connecting You With Texas’ in rural, urban and metro areas of our great state. Together, we are committed to executing every day – because that's what the Texas taxpayers who voted overwhelmingly to fund new roads in Texas expect and deserve. “A major focus for the agency has been reducing congestion and improving mobility in our state’s most congested areas through the commission’s congestion relief initiative, Texas Clear Lanes,” he added. “This effort, aimed at providing congestion relief through non-tolled projects, is focused on tackling the biggest traffic chokepoints in Austin, Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston and San Antonio – TxDOT’s five metro districts. So far, we have completed six major Texas Clear Lanes projects, have 19 other projects under construction and 18 more in the planning stages.” As of last year, $24.9 billion has been assigned to Texas Clear Lanes non-tolled projects in metro districts for congestion relief, which has resulted 6,200 plus nontolled projects awarded from Jan. 1, 2015, to Aug. 31, 2020. This has added more than 1,600 lane mi. between 2015 and 2020. Furthermore, 208 rural connectivity projects were completed since 2015 and another 145 have been under construction since last September. From 2015 to 2020, $1.7 billion has been invested in modal programs to move people and goods throughout the state . This includes landside port connectivity for 13 public ports, development for 292 general aviation airports, rail improvements and rehabilitation among Texas' 9,000 plus public at-grade rail highway crossings, public transportation programs in rural and urban

Despite a year full of trials and tribulations due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Texas is still managing to get construction projects off the ground, including a record-breaking $24 billion worth of projects throughout the state.

areas with more than 147 million one-way trips, and fleet and facility upgrades, and 120 plus locally sponsored projects providing safe routes to schools in rural and urban areas and the Statewide ADA Pedestrian Program for pedestrian accessibility, safety and mobility. Many state governments have experienced difficulties in increasing gas taxes and other funding measures to secure funds for DOTs. In some cases it has taken years to address these issues, with several DOTs having to prepare for cutbacks and delaying projects. “Eighty percent and 83 percent of Texans voted in favor of ballot measures in 2014 and 2015, respectively, to direct more state funding to the State Highway Fund for nontolled road projects,” noted the progress

report. Additionally, the commission allocated an extra $600 million for FY 2020-2021 for the “Road to Zero” goal of zero fatalities on Texas roads by 2050. This is geared toward safety improvements, adding to the safety components and dollars already committed to every project. In FY 2020, 90 safety project were funded. “TxDOT also has invested an additional $1.48 billion for more than 3,200 targeted highway safety improvement projects in calendar years 2015 to 2020 to further support data-driven safety engineering solutions,” stated the progress report. The financing for the projects is based on a combination of state and federal resources. “For years, traditional funding from state and federal gas tax revenues met the state

As of last year, $24.9 billion has been assigned to Texas Clear Lanes non-tolled projects in metro districts for congestion relief.

highway system’s needs,” stated Texas Transportation Funding 2021 Edition (January). “Over time these revenues failed to meet the transportation needs of the state’s growing population. To address the population boom and the diminishing purchasing power of traditional revenue sources, the Texas Legislature authorized TxDOT to issue debt. Bond proceeds allowed TxDOT to advance projects sooner and to pay those debts over several years. “To date, the proceeds generated from the bonds [Proposition 14 State Highway Fund Bonds, Proposition 12 Highway Improvement General Obligation Bonds and Texas Mobility Fund Bonds] have been fully allocated and spent,” it added. “All formerly permissible bond opportunities for additional funding have been exhausted or suspended. Following these bond programs, the Texas Legislature, with overwhelming voter approval, provided two new, non-traditional sources of funding known as Proposition 1 [2014] and Proposition 7 [2015]. This special edition brochure provides an overview of how TxDOT has used these funds and how these funds were reported in the fiscal year 2022-2023 Legislative Appropriations Request [LAR].” The document also noted that for the next biennium, PTAC recommends $3.8 million to address population growth and anticipated shifts in formula allocation as a result of the 2020 Census. “These funds sustain current state per capita funding levels for rural, small urban and large urban transit districts in response to the anticipated population growth forecast for 2020 Census results. TxDOT requests $10 million in general revenue for each year of the upcoming biennium to increase the Aviation Facilities Development Program [AFDP] and the Routine Airport Maintenance Program [RAMP], which support 278 Texas general aviation airports. Airport development needs at these airports exceed annual budget allocations by 68 percent. Funding for both programs has been level for the past 17 years, resulting in a 51 percent decrease in purchasing power due to increases in construction costs. The proposed funding would allocate $9 million to AFDP and $1 million allocated to RAMP annually.” “On behalf of the Port Authority Advisory Committee [PAAC], TxDOT requests $130 million in general revenue for FY 2022 and UB authority in FY 2023 for the Texas Ports Capital Program,” it added. “Texas is the nation’s leading import and export state and a leader in waterborne trade. To maintain this position and remain competitive in the future, both domestically and globally, Texas ports need additional funding for capital improvements and infrastructure.”  CEG

Women Can Bring Valuable, Unique Construction Skillsets CAREERS from page 38

And because infrastructure is at the core of the U.S. economic recovery plan, the sector has seen an influx of money, which means a lot more jobs available. “Every industry has its ups and downs, but asphalt is stable for the most part.” The focus in 2021 for Women of Asphalt is “Women in the Field.” The goal is to draw more women to the industry. “Women are more proud than anyone about the job they do. They don’t get recognized, but if it weren’t for them, the road wouldn’t get built.” Following ‘The Golden Rule’ With pride comes awareness. “Be aware of who you are.” Dickinson of CIS believes this holds true for all professionals, but particularly for women in construction. She advises women to understand that men are going to act and process information differently from women in a given situation. “When you’re in the minority, understand that this is what the majority is used to,” said Dickinson. Acknowledge that it’s easier for men to communicate with each other because theirs is a well-oiled system that’s been in place for

centuries. “Don’t expect everybody else to adjust to your way of thinking.” Once you gain respect and credibility, then you can expect they’ll see the situation from your perspective, she added. As an example, she talks about the crane industry’s lengthy and intense work on crane operator certification. “There were so many debates about the right approach, what would be required and even whether certification would be required,” said Dickinson. “We were all going into those meetings with a little different information and just listening. At the end of the day, we wondered ‘Is there really that big a philosophical difference among us?’” Dickinson said more women are working to make construction job sites safer by simply being aware of the differences between men and women. “It gives us that extra measure of evaluation,” she said of women in the construction training field. Women have to ask themselves how they can accomplish what needs to be done and do so safely. “Figuring out how to do a job well and safely may be a natural outcome for the

woman who asks before she decides how she will do a job,” she said. An all-new crew may question if the other people on the team can and will do a job well. “When a woman is the only, or one of the few women on a job site, the men often wait to see how capable she is,” said Dickinson. “They don’t trust her until they know they can.” Respect and professionalism on the job site can still be an issue today. “Ignoring the possibilities of how quickly behaviors can cross the line jeopardizes employees, sites and companies,” said Dickinson. To women exploring construction safety as a career field, she advises finding a job you really enjoy. “Do a few different things, look at where opportunities are to get exposure to different types of work,” said Dickinson. “When you find something you click with, get credentials in that particular area. That will establish who you are and earn the respect of your male counterparts.” She believes though there’s no difference between a 21-year-old woman or man who has no experience in the construction industry.

However, they’re perceived differently because there are more men on the job site. But women have a tendency to pay a lot of attention to detail, which is crucial on the safety side, she noted. “So know how to play to your strengths without assuming everyone will do what you say, and follow that lead.” When you do bring points to the surface, do so when you feel strongly about it. And understand when speaking up will make a difference or not. “You can’t make a major deal out of everything or else nothing gets done,” said Dickinson. “And don’t try to be one of the guys, because you’re not. That doesn’t earn you any additional respect or more money.” Conduct yourself with professionalism appropriate for the job site. Finally: “Do your job well. Some jobs are physically more challenging for women. Recognize that, and don’t get yourself in a situation you’re not prepared for.” A lot has changed since Emily Roebling became the first person to cross the East River in 1883 by way of the bridge she gave 10 years of her life to see completed. In stepping in for her husband to help successfully finish the project, she opened doors for women into the construction industry.  CEG

Even the ever-present West Texas tumbleweed found its way to the Seminole auction. These Allmand light towers were among the dozens sold at the auction.

In addition to construction equipment, Iron Bound sales feature a good selection of latemodel trucks and ag equipment.

A good crowd of bidders was on hand for the two-day Iron Bound event in Seminole, Texas, March 23 to 24.

Odessa, Texas, buyers Trini Romero (L) and Jose Zunia were meticulous in their inspection of the many skid steers available in Seminole but settled on this Deere 318G. Romero owns TR Welding service and Zunia operates Welding and Fence Construction.

robust equipment and truck demand we are helping drive in 2021,” said Chuck Roberson, regional sales manager of Ritchie Bros. “With all bidding online, demand has skyrocketed over the past year. Our Fort Worth auction saw online pageviews per lot increase 59 percent year over year, while watchlists per lot and PriorityBids increased 78 percent and 157 percent, respectively. As a result, we have a lot of happy sellers right now rushing to get more equipment consigned for our next event.” Equipment highlights in the Fort Worth auction included a 2015 Tadano GR1000XL-3 4x4x4 rough terrain crane that sold for $385,000 to an online buyer from Indonesia; a 2016 Caterpillar 349FL

hydraulic excavator that sold for $245,000 to a buyer from Texas; and a 2018 Peterbilt 389 T/A sleeper truck tractor that sold for $124,000 to a buyer from Arizona. All items were sold unreserved with no minimum bids or reserve prices. “Even with all bidding online we still safely welcomed thousands of masked buy-

ers onsite to inspect equipment in person prior to bidding,” added Roberson. “We also sold more than 800 items with our virtual sales option, as many consignors from outside the state were eager to be a part of the sale. Our auctions are becoming more digital and more convenient, resulting in more bidders and better returns for sellers.” 

Construction Crews Unearth Rare Find On Calif. Job Site VALLEJO, Calif. (AP) Construction workers rebuilding a bridge in the San Francisco Bay area unexpectedly found two people living in a cave dug into an embankment, authorities said. Crews were excavating at the site of the old bridge in Vallejo when they heard voices and switched off their digging equipment, Tom Walker, the project manager of the city, told the San Francisco Chronicle. They discovered a cave about 20-ft. long and 3-ft. high in the side of the embankment. “We called in the police and fire departments to make sure we didn't injure anyone,” Walker said. In relocating the occupants, Walker added, “It’s a rescue operation.” Dozens of police, firefighters and rescue workers converged on the bridge 1.5 mi. north of downtown Vallejo, the Chronicle reported. Vallejo resident Albert Wong said he saw sleeping bags, backpacks, clothing and other items being removed from the cave. “It was a lot of stuff,” he said. “It’s really common to have homeless

encampments under bridges but this is the first time I’ve seen something like this,” Walker said. Construction workers began rebuilding a decades-old two-lane bridge that serves Mare Island and hope to have the new span finished by year’s end, Walker said. Mare Island is about 23 mi. northeast of San Francisco. 
