Harms Installs Drilled Shafts With Barge-Mounted BAUER George Harms Construction Company continued work on the replacement of the Raritan River Bridge on a frigid January day as a major winter storm barreled toward New Jersey. This determination, along with a unique decision-making strategy centered on a specific piece of equipment, are keeping this critical infrastructure project on track. The material under the riverbed largely dictated the need for a rig the size of the BAUER BG 55. The upper layers were soft, silty clay underlain by varying depth sand layers. Beneath that was dense clay and Siltstone. A group of key project executives from Harms and Equipment Corporation of America (ECA) gathered on the shoreline as work progressed and crews secured the barges holding the equipment. “We can handle cold temperatures and snow but our biggest nemesis out here is the wind,” said Jason Hardell, senior vice president of operations. “That’s why we all have beards.” This 112-year-old bridge carries an active New Jersey Transit line across the river from Perth Amboy to South Amboy. Damaged by Superstorm Sandy in 2012, the new span will incorporate structural designs and materials to bolster its defenses against severe weather. In May 2020, Harms was awarded a contract to install 87 drilled shafts across the Raritan River in configurations from two to 10 shafts per pier. It was the first of three construction phases that will replace the bridge with a lift span. This bridge represents the largest project Harms has ever done in terms of dollar value, but not in terms of scope. Building BG 55 Into Bid The selection of the BG 55 was founded on a 30-plus year business relationship and friendship between ECA New York, New Jersey Regional Sales Manager Bruce Langan and Harms President Emeritus Tom Hardell. Harms was awarded this project when the original low bidder retracted its bid. No stranger to $200-million-plus bridges, Harms wasted no time mobilizing and starting work in July 2020. Harms worked with ECA’s Director of BAUER Product Sales and Service Gordian Ulrich to spec the BG 55 into the project during the pre-bid phase. His career started in 2007

at BAUER Maschinen’s method development department in Germany and he has been involved with various drilling applications on a global scale. Other brands of equipment were considered, but Harms concluded that only the BG 55 could cost-effectively drill 8ft.-diameter shafts up to 240 ft. “We went out on the limb and purchased it before we were even low,” said President and CEO Rob Harms. The smaller BAUER BG 40 also was considered, but lacked the winch capacity Harms needed. With the massive Kelly bar, tooling, and heavy clay, the BG 55 was the only choice. ECA had the rig shipped from BAUER Maschinen in Germany to the Port of Newark and hauled to the Harms

waterfront facility in Newark, N.J. Once assembled, the BG 55 crawled onto a 200-ft.-long Flexifloat Barge and was floated to the Raritan River Bridge site. This barge would serve as its mobile working platform. Barge stability was critical with the 118-ft.-tall BG 55 mast subjected to heavy winds during drilling. The barge is constructed of Flexifloats and the configuration is unique and specifically designed for this project and this application. Its 10-ft.-wide sections in 10- and 20-ft. lengths snap together like Legos, so Harms had the flexibility to add and remove. Six hydraulic spuds with 24-in. diameter pipes anchored see HARMS page 48

NYC Makes $148M Investment in Southern Brooklyn Sewers NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) Commissioner Rohit T. Aggarwala and NYC Department of Design and Construction (DDC) Commissioner Thomas Foley announced the completion of the $148 million, three-phase program to reduce street flooding, ensure the reliability of the drinking water delivery system, improve the health of Fresh Creek and Jamaica Bay and make neighborhood roadways safer for all users. Demolition Nears Completion at Site of Tracey Road Ready New 43-Story Tower in Brooklyn, N.Y. to Represent New Demolition is almost complete at 356 Fulton Street, the site of a 43-story mixed-use tower in downtown Brooklyn, N.Y. When the site is cleared, construction will begin on the planned 496-ft.-tall skyscraper — one that will yield 475,000 sq. ft. with 363 residential units and 100,000 sq. ft. of commercial space. The property is located at the corner of Fulton Street and Red Hook Lane. It was designed by MdeAS Architects and SLCE Architects and developed by Jeff Mongno of The Feil Organization. Each firm has its headquarters in New York City. The old three-story structure that once stood on the site is almost completely razed, with only a fragment of the superstructure and below-grade levels remaining. Excavators are clearing the site of dirt, bricks, debris and mounds of concrete rubble from the former edifice, YIMBY reported. Demolition should fully wrap up in the coming weeks, and work on the new foundations could start in the latter half of 2022. A rendering of the tower reveals that a multi-story podium spans the entire parcel and is topped with an outdoor terrace, followed by the lower half of the skyscraper, which uniformly rises as a rectangular volume. The architects designed a midway setback dividing the upper part of the tower, which then rises at a 90-degree angle, with its wider profile oriented east to west. The building culminates with a mechanical bulkhead below the flat roof parapet. The rendering appears to show that the main tower is clad in floor-to-ceiling glass and gray metal panels, while the podium features a darker colored curtain wall.

Another in Line of Glittering Brooklyn Towers New York YIMBY reported that the construction of the 356 Fulton Street project is just one part of the ongoing Brooklyn construction boom that is transforming the borough’s skyline with a multitude of both residential and office buildings. Within the new skyscraper will be 329,305 sq. ft. of residential space, with 30 percent of the units designated as affordable housing. Construction will consist of a reinforced concrete structure and include two cellar levels, a 30-ft.-long rear yard, and 146 open and enclosed parking spaces. The nearest subways are the A, C, F and R trains at the Jay Street-MetroTech station to the north. The 2,3, 4 and 5 trains also are accessible to the east at the Nevins Street station, as are the B, Q and R trains at the DeKalb Avenue station beneath City Point. A completion date for 356 Fulton Street is still unclear, though it is expected to be finished around 2025. 

Washington Metro Has Big Plan to Develop Housing, More WMATA rendering

The Washington Metro unveiled an ambitious 10-year plan April 7 to build housing and commercial space on 20 properties the transit system owns, which the transit agency projects will bring thousands of customers and millions of dollars in rent and fares. The commuter line serves the District of Columbia, Maryland and northern Virginia. The Washington Post reported that by diversifying various income streams, the Metro is trying to provide a hedge against the prospect of looming financial trouble from the loss of fare-paying commuters to telework. In addition, an overextended construction budget also has prompted Maryland lawmakers to propose increasing annual subsidies under a plan contingent on Virginia doing the same. Metro is hoping to soften a financial blow it expects this summer, when more than $2 billion of federal coronavirus aid begins to evaporate. The proposals are the latest ideas from transit officials and lawmakers as the region recovers from a pandemic that has altered commutes and crushed Metro’s finances. At the heart of the effort, the

agency has a detailed plan to develop Metro’s remaining properties and aims to coordinate with local governments to create development that helps the transit system. The plan’s goals are to increase Metro ridership, generate new revenue from fares and leases, and help the region grow businesses and housing that generate tax revenue. The increased development would ultimately help Metro in the form of annual subsidies that jurisdictions provide. New transit users from the proposed developments in the plan are projected to take 5 million to 9 million new Metro trips each year, and pay $20 million to $40 million in fares, according to agency estimates. Added revenue from leases would generate $50 million for Metro each year, and the development would contribute about $340 million in annual tax revenue to local and state jurisdictions, Metro officials said. The influx of revenue, while still years away, would bring more balance to the transit line’s income sources, according to the Post. The transit system’s biggest moneymaker, Metrorail, lost about

80 percent of its riders during the pandemic, although ridership has rebounded recently alongside the reopening of more downtown office buildings. Daily weekday rail trips in late March were still 65 percent lower, on average, than before the pandemic. Developers Hungry for Metro’s Buildable Acreage Land prices are escalating across a region in need of more housing, prompting developers to increasingly try to partner with Metro, owner of more than 550 buildable acres near 40 rail stations and with the potential for 31 million sq. ft. of development and 26,000 homes. More than half of the sites are in Maryland, six are in northern Virginia and the others are in the District of Columbia. The locations also are coveted among developers because of their transit access, which tends to command higher prices. Since 1975, Metro has built 55 projects and 17 million sq. ft. at 30 stations through public-private development agreements, in the process generating $194 million each year in state and local tax revenue.

“As we emerge from the pandemic, joint development presents a real win-win opportunity for Metro and the region,” Liz Price, Metro’s vice president for real estate, said in a statement. Angie Rogers, deputy chief administrative officer of Maryland’s Prince George’s Economic Development Corporation (EDC), said her office is working on plans to increase development along the Blue Line corridor from D.C. to downtown Largo. It also is teaming with Metro to preserve and expand housing, commercial stores and offices at Blue, Orange and Green Line stations. Funding Gaps, Budget Deficits Present Problems for Metro Congress saved Metro from drastic service cuts over the past two years with three rounds of federal stimulus money, an infusion of $2.4 billion that made up for revenue losses. Metro, with an annual operating budget of about $2 billion, is projecting to have $151 million of federal aid remaining for the fiscal year that begins July 1, 2023, leaving the agency to make up the rest.

The Post reported that the transit system is projecting a funding gap in mid-2023 of more than $300 million. Metro also faces a looming deficit in its capital budget, which funds construction, renovation projects, new trains and buses. For years, the transit system had been behind on repairs and upgrades, contributing to track fires, breakdowns and delays, but that had started to change recently, boosted by Maryland, D.C. and Virginia deciding in 2018 to devote dedicated funding for Metro’s needs, amounting to $500 million annually. The money helped Metro catch up on repairs, including the replacement of 20 worn and weathered outdoor platforms and an overhaul of station escalators, the Washington newspaper reported. The dearth of passengers during the pandemic also allowed Metro to expedite projects. Metro’s annual capital building program over 10 years has grown from $700 million a year to more than $1.8 billion this year. The transit system issues bonds see METRO page 98

Steven Dubner Landscaping, a full-service landscape construction and design firm that is known throughout Manhattan, Long Island and the New York metropolitan area, has earned a reputation for constructing and transforming some of the most prestigious, private and public spaces. The 56-year-old company has developed and installed some notable projects, including the highline to the World Trade Center, as well as multiple hundreds of smaller jobs like residential developments, high-rise rooftops, municipal projects from Great Neck, Kings Point and the Hamptons. First-of-Its-Kind Driven Pile Academy Trains Contractors Described as “innovative” and “first-of-its-kind,” participants in The Driven Pile Academy are heading back to job sites around North America, including Hawaii, Canada and Mexico, now equipped with new perspectives and insights that can optimize their execution on future deep foundations projects. The three-day program offered by the Pile Driving Contactors Association (PDCA) at a donated construction yard and shop in Duson, La., included a full day of classroom instruction followed by two days of hands-on field training on a diverse array of deep foundation equipment valued at more than $10 million. Equipment experts and tenured practitioners volunteered significant time over 10 months to develop this inaugural event, which many believe to be a critical addition to the PDCA education curriculum. While job site and equipment safety preceded every segment during the three-day program, attendees began the training with an 11-hour day of detailed classroom instruction covering topics ranging from soil investigations, hammer sizing, rigging, working platforms, cushions, splicing, load testing and cost savings with driven piles, to name a few. A total of 27 professional development hours were available to attendees. Outdoor activity took place during the two remaining days of the event and provided attendees some of the most unique and compelling training available on the market, according to the organizers. During this portion, they stood in observation of piling equipment installing and removing piling materials in and out of the Louisiana clay. Participants rotated through seven stations, each featuring different hammer types including hydraulic, diesel, vibratory, dedicated rigs and excavatormounted equipment. A diverse collection of cranes and rigging also were utilized throughout the stations. Steel sheet pilings, “Hbeam” piers and prestressed concrete piles were all subjected to equipment demonstrations for both installation and removal purposes. The outdoor rotations also provided instruction on set-up, stand-up of equipment, trucking considerations, mainte-

nance and best practices, job site legalities, equipment accessories, data gauges and tooling, as well as experience-based observations from industry veterans. Organizers aspired to offer a low instructor-to-student ratio for this event and originally established a capacity of 42 openings for contractors and other pile driving professionals to attend; the goal was to maximize attendee opportunities for instructional and hands-on training. However, demand swelled throughout the registration period and PDCA made staffing and instruction adjustments to increase capacity, ultimately hosting 85 students, including contractors, engineers, designers, estimators, and others. In addition to the intensive classroom and outdoor instruction, participants were afforded time for networking, relaxation, and a unique southern Louisiana experience.

Dusonbased contractor Patriot Construction & Industrial LLC lent large portions of its expansive 19-acre property to The Driven Pile Academy. Patriot provided attendees with true local Louisiana flair. In addition to the daily caterers, native Louisianans from the company enhanced the non-instructional time with an opening welcome reception featuring local gumbo, among the offerings. NJDOT Approves Study of Damage to I-80 Retaining Wall A project to study damage to a retaining wall that supports a raised section of Interstate 80 near the Delaware Water Gap, was approved recently by a New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) internal committee. The New Jersey Herald reported April 22 that according to the meeting’s agenda, the wall may be “subject to sudden failure.” The news source also noted that the NJDOT committee will receive $5.5 million in state funds that it requested to inspect the wall and produce solutions to address the problem, which includes the deterioration of the wall and a minimum 12-in.-deep crack. The estimated cost of the repairs to the wall’s crack and deterioration stands at $51 million. The “failure” warning was included in the project description, which also stated the retaining wall “does not meet current serviceability requirements due to its minimal reinforcement,” and that a failure “is a risk to the traveling public and could result in a closure of I-80.” 1950s-Era Wall Curves Around Mt. Tammany The retaining wall stretches for more than a quarter mile around the base of 1,526-ft.tall Mt. Tammany in an area of I-80 known for its S-curves, which were built in the 1950s. NJDOT’s engineering study will examine the retaining wall issues that were discovered by crews making repairs to a nearby section of the wall that had been scoured or eroded by water coming down from the mountain, located on the New Jersey side of the Delaware Water Gap and maintained by the state agency. The scour, known by locals as the “erosion cave,” is at milepost 1.4 of the highway. The retaining wall is 1,470-ft. long wall, ranges from 13- to 18-ft.-tall and is made up of 49 individual panels. Time Is Now to Make Repairs According to a transportation agency memo, “Upon clearing vegetation west of this wall repair, additional wall deterioration, with a minimum 12-in.-deep crack adjacent to the wall shear key, was observed.” The NJDOT memo also stated that the wall “does not meet current serviceability requirements due to its minimal reinforcement. Due to the tied-back construction of

the existing wall, it could be subject to sudden failure, which is a risk to the traveling public and could result in a closure of I-80.” The Herald reported that a video taken in 2020 by area residents, as part of their effort to draw attention to the “erosion cave” and other problems with the 75-year-old road and wall, shows the crack was present at that time. When the wall was constructed, a drainage system was included that would collect and control the water flowing off the mountain to channel it into the river. However, breaks and cracks in that system of mostly concrete pipes allowed water to seep into the fill. Seeking a path to the river, water pushed down to the bottom of the wall and completely eroded parts of it, the Herald noted. Veteran Engineer Warns of More Erosion The news service brought in a retired civil engineer to examine the information that the engineering study will include. Afterward, the engineer, who asked that his name not be published, said he thinks the water has built up behind the wall, creating more pressure on the structure. He added that the concrete, like a piece of chalk, can take a lot of pressure, but is also “brittle” and can break without warning. As part of the recent repair project, the contractor drilled a series of “weep holes” in the retaining wall. Those holes are attached to perforated piping and provide a route for trapped water to flow through the wall to reduce the pressure. “However, that’s just a temporary measure,” the engineer told the Herald. “It’s a sign that there’s water back there.” The engineer also believes a minimal amount of steel was used in building the retaining wall and in anchoring it to the base of the mountain. While there are strict federal laws on how often inspections need to be conducted on bridge structures, there also is no similar law on how often retaining walls need to be inspected. The NJDOT study is needed since the structure is nearing the end of its useful life and was built to standards from 70 years ago, explained the engineer. He added that he does not think there is an immediate danger to the public, but a full inspection must be done soon. 

Md. Chooses Site for New Span of Chesapeake Bay Bridge The Maryland Transportation Authority (MTA) has chosen a 2-mi.-wide corridor at the Chesapeake Bay Bridge as the best spot for an additional span, adding that the plan would relieve the most traffic congestion for weekend beachgoers and Eastern Shore commuters. MTA released the five-and-a-half-yearlong study April 21, after looking at 14 potential options for a new bridge. In choosing “Corridor 7,” the state agency said it would be able to tie a third span into U.S. Highway 50 on both sides of the bay. Including feeder roads, it would stretch 22 mi., from an area west of the Severn River Bridge in Anne Arundel County to the U.S. 50/U.S. 301 split in Queen Anne’s County on the Eastern Shore. A new bridge near the existing spans would be significantly shorter than neighboring alignments because the bay is narrower there, according WTOP News in Washington, D.C. A third span would run approximately 4 mi., roughly one-third of the length of the closest alternatives. “Corridor 7 would require a much shorter crossing of the Chesapeake Bay compared to Corridors 6 and 8, which would potentially result in lower impacts to the open water of the bay and other major waterways,” the

study found. “A longer crossing would require greater impervious surfaces, more substantial construction, and a greater overall footprint of area impacted in the Chesapeake Bay and other major water bodies.” Adding a third span there also would alleviate a “substantially greater” amount of traffic and affect fewer neighborhoods than two locations considered to the north and south, the study found. The Post noted that MTA believes the selected corridor has “substantial environmental resources,” but more detailed analysis would be needed to figure out how an added crossing would affect them. As the shortest choice at a narrow point of the bay, the study noted, it “would potentially result in fewer environmental impacts to sensitive aquatic resources … such as open water, fish habitat and oysters.” Maryland’s selection was outlined in the proposal’s final environmental impact statement, which confirmed the conclusions of a draft study released last year. The Federal Highway Administration (FHA) approved the state’s choice for the new span by issuing a “record of decision,” which would be needed for federal construction funding. However, the official selection does not

mean the bridge will be expanded anytime soon, the Post reported. MTA spokesperson John Sales told the newspaper that a more detailed analysis, expected to cost $28 million and take four to five years, will identify a specific alignment within the chosen corridor, but it has no funding. Maryland also has not revealed how it would pay for design and construction, estimated to cost between $5.4 billion and $8.9 billion in 2020 dollars, depending on the amount of road widening or new approach lanes needed. Opposition Questions MTA’s Search for Options The study has raised questions about the best way to alleviate notorious traffic congestion across the Chesapeake Bay without increasing development pressure on Eastern Shore farmland or damaging environmentally fragile areas. Public officials representing communities along U.S. 50 on both sides of the bridge also have said a wider crossing would encourage more motorists to use it, ensnaring residents in more backups. The bridge typically carries approximately 118,600 vehicles daily on summer weekends and approximately 68,600 on non-sum-

mer weekdays, according to the state. Jay Falstad, executive director of the Queen Anne’s Conservation Association, said the MTA study is “fundamentally flawed” because it did not adequately explore other traffic-relief options short of an expansion, such as tolls to encourage crossing at off-peak times. He told the Post that MTA also did not consider the pandemic’s long-term effects on travel. “We don’t quarrel with the idea that, if there’s going to be another bridge crossing, it should be at the same location,” Falstad explained. “But we don’t believe the state has fully examined the no-build option or any other options that might reduce traffic.” He also cited an analysis by AKRF, a Hanover, Maryland environmental planning and engineering firm hired by his group, that found a new span would relieve traffic only “temporarily” because it would attract more motorists and spur more sprawl development. For example, the AKRF study said traffic on the bridge’s second span increased by 37 percent within five years of opening in 1973. MTA’s analysis, the private review said, also did not properly account for the “likely significantly higher” cost needed to widen U.S. 50 and local feeder roads. 

the barge to the soft riverbed. Despite the added stability, Harms and ECA had to overcome up and down movement every time the Kelly bar moved. Harms worked with Flexifloat at the prebid stage to design the barge around the BG 55. The polymer slurry tanks on the opposite side served as a counterweight. The hurdle Harms had to overcome was that the weight fluctuated during drilling as the Kelly bar turned and slurry was pumped to the BG 55 to support drilling. “We had to analyze different drilling scenarios, including worst case scenarios,” said Jason Hardell. “Then we calculated the forward- and rear-leaning barge trim, conveyed that to BAUER, and received confirmation that there would be no issue with the machine [BG 55].” Drilling in the River Harms installed rock sockets into the Siltstone out in the channel in the deepest part of the river. Some of the shallower shafts were socketed into dense clay. The Siltstone had tested unconfined compressive strength as high as 7,000 psi. According to Vice President of Construction Kevin Harms, the BG 55 excelled when drilling in hard materials. “The BG 55 has been good in terms of its performance in harsh geotechnical conditions and overall capabilities.” Harms did two test shafts in November 2020 using the BG 40. A third test shaft was completed with the BG 55 in January 2021. The installation of the production shafts started in February 2021. The Harms Way Pre-planning seems to be a recurring theme for Harms. “We looked at different options and different ways to do it, and it has paid off. some large, difficult challenges to overcome that weren’t in the planning process. That’s when you really see the value of the team,” Rob Harms said. From the workers in the field that barely pause to make eye contact with visitors, to the project management team, a get it done attitude seems to be the norm at Harms. “Our people have the same mindset: we’ve got to get this done no matter what it takes,” said Rob Harms. “When major issues arise, we focus on addressing the problem before considering the cost.” Harms only buys equipment. Once the contractor is convinced that a certain machine is the right fit for a certain project, it with make the purchase with the conviction that it can keep it busy on future projects. Harms also has a reputation for main-

taining equipment, which translates into an above-average resale value. “If you own it, you’re only making money when it’s running,” said Kevin Harms. “If it goes down on a job, we lose money, so making sure it’s serviced and running is crucial.” Next Level Equipment Support “It’s a 24-hour operation,” ECA’s Gordian Ulrich said. “If the phone rings in the middle of the night, we need to have boots on the ground immediately to support the customer.” It was critical to have the right people to assemble the BG 55, start up the project with Harms, conduct operator training, and service the equipment. ECA’s team included technicians, operator trainers, and even welders for the tooling.

“Projects of this size and scope are what the ECA BAUER Service Team lives for,” said Ulrich. “In 2019 we started building a team of BAUER product specialists to be able to support our customers in the field when it is showtime. Our crew set up and commissioned the rig before our in-house operator trainers started working with three Harms operators to ensure safe operation with this massive 84-meter-long Kelly bar together with the biggest rig on the East Coast.” ECA knows how to control the risk above ground, but once the drill breaks ground, all bets are off. With offshore drilling, no backup rig could be brought in if the BG 55 went down. The movement of the barge also was a factor, especially drilling at depths of up to see HARMS page 50

240 ft. The time frame Harms had to drill a shaft was fixed, which added yet another layer of complexity. Self-Sufficient Drilling Barge “Everything we need is on that drill barge,” said Jason Hardell. “The whole operation is self-sufficient.” Harms first pinned a square-shaped casing guide to the BG 55 barge to ensure that the casing was straight and properly located. Sections up to 145 ft. were set with a 330-ton crane on a neighboring barge. The drilled shafts were 102-in. diameter from top of casing to the bottom with 96-in. rock sockets, the longest of which was 30 ft. The BG 55 was not the only massive piece of equipment on site. Harms used a crane-supported 100,000-lb. ICE 200C vibratory driver/extractor to drive the casing that will remain in place as part of the structure. The BG 55 was then used to drill out the material within the casing to the depth Harms required. The depth of the shafts and the uncased section below the casing presented the greatest complexity for Harms. Polymer slurry was required to keep the hole open in sandy soils between the casing and the rock socket. The BG 55 was used strictly to excavate material and drill the rock sockets. Its cleanout bucket removed the spoils with the help of polymer slurry pumped from nearby tanks. A floating tank was moved back and forth to supply clean water for the reuse of the polymer slurry. The spoils were loaded into a hopper barge by excavator and transported to the shoreline for disposal. Workers spliced the galvanized rebar cages on an adjacent barge. Once completed, the crane hoisted them into the casing. The shafts were completed with the pumping of 4,000psi self-consolidating concrete (SCC). Harms also used its BAUER BG 40 for backup. The rig was positioned on a pile-supported trestle to Kelly drill the shallower shafts near the shoreline.

Once assembled, the BG 55 crawled onto a 200-ft.-long Flexifloat Barge and was floated to the Raritan River Bridge site, which served as its working platform.

sonic tested to verify strength. The completed full-length casing was trucked to the shoreline and shipped to the BG 55 barge for installation. The welding system proved to be an effective alternative to workers doing the job by hand. “You’re doing a full penetration V-shaped weld on one-inch casing,” said Rob Harms. “It’s a serious welding job.”

Specially Designed Conventional Tools ECA and Harms chose conventional tooling for the BG 55 during the pre-bid phase. “We chose to drill with a lockable Kelly bar combined with BAUER tools including double-cut rock buckets and a cleanout bucket,” said Ulrich. “For better guidance, verticality and production reasons we designed and built these tools extra-long and equipped them with BETEK bullet teeth.” Drilling up to 240 ft. with a telescoping four-section Kelly bar was no easy task. This 275.5-ft. bar is custom-made for the BG 55. It is among the largest of the few that exist in the United States and the longest ECA has sold. “The telescopic Kelly bar is like a long asparagus-type bar; the longer you extend it, the more it tends to wobble,” said Ulrich. “When you crowd down on the bar the tip tends to take the path of least resistance below the casing, so putting the right tool on it and having well trained operators are key factors in the drilling success.” The project had a tough vertical tolerance spec of 1.5 percent. Harms purchased Kelly bar stabilizers BAUER had used on several other deep holes around the world, but the skill of its operators in combination with the specially tailored tools made them unnecessary. The tolerance was achieved starting with the first drilled shaft. Harms had no regrets because being prepared up front was better than shutting down the project for months while tooling was manufactured. Building Foundation for Progress Harms is on track to complete this roughly 4 ½ year project on schedule. It will then pass the torch to the phase two contractor to construct the lift bridge and flanking spans superstructure, communications, and signal and overhead catenary work. The old bridge will be demolished and rail traffic will be transferred to the new structure in phase three. “The drilling rig is really what’s driving the job,” said Rob Harms. “The shift from two 12-hour shifts to three 8-hour shifts really made a difference. It’s going really good.” Building a foundation for a structure of this size and complexity is a challenge regardless of the construction method chosen. In the case of the Raritan River Bridge, Harms combined innovation, teamwork, pre-planning, vendor partnerships, and the right equipment to make the project a success.
