FELLING Drop Deck Air Ramp System
The DDI air ramp system operates via an airbag system that works off the same supply as the air brake system. Thus, any air-brake-equipped truck can operate a Felling Trailer equipped with air ramps without any other external power source (e.g., battery, gas engine, or truck-powered hydraulic system).

Felling Trailers will debut its new air ramp slider track system for the Drop Deck I (DDI) series, air brake equipped, FT-20 I and FT-24 I trailers.
Operator safety and ease of use are paramount at Felling Trailers, thus expanding the air ramp offering to the drop deck equipment trailer line was inevitably the next step, the company said.
The DDI air ramp system operates via an airbag system that works off the same supply as the air brake system. Thus, any air-brakeequipped truck can operate a Felling Trailer equipped with air ramps without any other external power source (e.g., battery, gas engine, or truck-powered hydraulic system).
The air power mechanism is like those used on larger capacity trailers but scaled to a lighter duty cycle for the lower capacity trailer and ramps. The air ramp system does the lifting for you, flip the switch, and the air ramp system will raise or lower the ramps.
Unique to the DDI’s air ramp operation is the slider track system that works in unison with the ramps pivoting as they are raised or lowered. The design of the slider track allows the ramps to move laterally along the trailer’s full-width. This lateral movement provides operators the flexibility to change the placement of the ramps based on the equipment they are transporting. For example, if loading a horizontal directional drill, an operator can slide the ramps to one side to load/unload, then move apart to load/unload a skid steer or compact loader.
This trailer and many others will be on display at The Utility Expo in the Felling Trailers’ Booth K-332, Sept. 28 to 30 in Louisville, Ky.

spread those payments and make that purchase much more feasible,” said Sleper.
XL offers a wide range of trailer models including hydraulic detachable gooseneck (HDGs) and mechanical full-width gooseneck (MFGs) lowboys, extendables and many others for the construction, commercial, agricultural, wind energy, oil and gas, infrastructure and custom trailer markets.
Founded in 1995 by George Wall, the company has been in business for 26 years, during which it has steadily grown from its original facility in Oelwein to its current headquarters in Manchester, expanding from 75,000 sq. ft. in 2006 to 130,000 sq. ft. of manufacturing space today, and with another expansion project now adding another 50,000 sq. ft. This will bring XL to almost 200,000 sq. ft. of manufacturing space and updated offices.
To be completed by year-end, the expansion will help add capacity in key areas of XL’s manufacturing process to reduce lead times and see a more satisfied customer base, resulting in larger market share.
“The last three years we’ve seen record performance across the board, from safety to topline growth to customer satisfaction … With the expansion project, we are looking to add more people, and grow by another 30 percent,” said Sleper, who brings manufacturing expertise spanning more than 25 years, having held leadership roles with General Motors, Honeywell, Goodyear Tire and Parker Hannifin.
That growth is attributed in large part to XL’s workforce and new leadership team, with company culture being the driving force behind the improvement.
“Our employee turnover three years ago was 85 percent and today is below 20 percent, that’s a business metric we watch closely,” said Sleper. “It’s very important to be plugged in to our team members. If we take care of our team, they in turn, will take good care of our customers. It’s been a transformational change for XL.”
Where finding and retaining labor has been a major pain point for the industry, and was true for XL until 2018, an improved employee benefits package with a bonus tied to company earnings, created by the new leadership team, has seen XL realize its goal of becoming an employer of choice in northeast Iowa.
“We have an awesome team at XL, and they deserve all the credit for our recent success,” said Sleper.
While competitors offer a standardized product line, and so does XL, Sleper explained that customization always drew customers in. A highly engineered, customer-centric, process-oriented approach, customization at XL involves voice of the customer, market study, a lot of analytics and a 10-person leadership team that sits on the panel evaluating new products as they come through. A prototype unit is made and goes into the field for testing.
“We have a large engineering team; they are experts regarding all the different factors and variations that go into heavy haul trailer manufacturing,” said Sleper. “Every state has different regulations and laws governing transportation of loads over the highway, so our engineering team must be up to date and knowledgeable about all those state laws and regulations, different bridge laws for example, and all the requirements that go into a heavy haul. It’s that engineering expertise that our founder, George Wall, realized was needed and he built the company around it. The differentiator back then and today being customized engineering services and products, that’s our secret sauce. That’s what sets us apart.”
Wall sold the company in 2007 to a private equity group, that then sold the company in 2016 to London-based Caparo Bull Moose, an industrial conglomerate owning manufacturing companies around the world. Through it all, XL has continued to strengthen its dealer network, team of skilled employees and add to its product offerings. Training is provided twice a year where dealers, customers, suppliers and new employees are invited to learn more about the company and products. The two-day sessions include hands-on time with trailers, understanding how each different model works and performs.
XL has a complete parts department that handles incoming calls daily and their own parts warehouse. Trailers get serviced at XL’s dedicated service center housed in a separate building across the street from the main facility with its own expert staff.
“The biggest challenge for us now is trying to meet the demand of our customer base; it has exploded over the last four months so the timing of the expansion project has been good for us and will enable us to better meet that demand,” said Sleper. “The other challenge is the supply chain; there is unprecedented raw material inflation going on in the market right now. We’re doing the best we can managing through this commodity surge. Our customers and dealers have been excellent partners through this challenging environment, and we’d like to thank them for their support.”
On plans for 2021 and beyond, Sleper said, “Every market sector is unique and involves product development and new features to trailers. Because most of our orders are custom work, each trailer is almost like a new product. We have a new product development team that is working all the time with our customers to develop the next big thing in the trailer industry. We are number one in the innovation space, and we come out with three to five new trailers every year. Our company is growing fast, and we have ambitions to double in size in the next three to five years. We are very excited for the future and what’s in store for the heavy haul trailer industry.” CEG

(L-R): Andy Bazan, Bob Joynt and Marty Ahrendt, all of Finkbiner Equipment, and Steve Nenn of Wells Fargo Equipment Finance show off their award at IED’s Golf Outing. Members of the 2019 Illinois Equipment Distributors board (L-R) are Jim McCann of McCann Industries; Bob Jones of SES Equipment Inc.; Steve Roggeman of McCann Industries; Kevin Ridens of Ditch Witch Midwest/1ST Choice Equipment; Jason Zeibert of Finkbiner Equipment; and Joe Stack of Cummins Power LLC.

fills a need. The challenge is keeping membership fresh and people coming out to participate. That’s the challenge.”
Part of that challenge is the indifference of many millennials toward traditional memberships, in business and elsewhere. They interact with the industry differently as customers — the old days of face-to-face interaction while sitting in an office has gone the way of electronic communication and independent evaluation of equipment before a first contact with a dealer.
Said Jones: “It’s a different dynamic.”
Jason Zeibert is president of Finkbiner Equipment, an Illinois Equipment Distributors member for 50 years. Zeibert also is the current president of IED. Several of the people previously quoted in the article have served as president over the years, some of them more than once. The current president seems fully aware of the need to have active members.
To encourage fuller participation, he talks to members about the value of the peer-topeer network that is the core part of the organization.
“The ability to talk to a counterpart about common issues and challenges and get feedback is so valuable. You know, ‘You’re going in the right direction’ or ‘I’m looking into doing that, too,’” he said.
Though many of the obstacles to success facing equipment distributors in the 1950s are the same today, Zeibert cites a major difference.
“Managing the pace of technology is difficult. There always have been advances in technology, of course, but the difference in the pace of change then and now is significant. I have dealers today who are really grappling with technology changes, internally and externally. Peer-to-peer interaction can help with that.”
The association conveys valuable information to members by hosting events featuring specialists. A regular feature is a quarterly credit manager meeting to keep accounts receivable personnel current with financial rules. Another example: A CPA was invited a while back to deliver a PowerPoint presentation on accounting issues, an event that Jones recalled “impacted everyone.”
He said bringing experts in to address a particular issue can happen as often as members want it to happen.
“If a couple of members see something that needs airing, with a little notice we can get somebody in to talk about that at the next meeting. IED is dealer-centric,” said Jones.
Several years ago, the association invited some large real estate company brokers to address the group and give them an idea about how the property market might be changing, with consequences for construction contractors and dealers.
“They talked about how in the next five to 10 years development would occur beyond industrial parks, that developers would be buying farmland and knocking down old properties and building mega-centers with rail spurs, huge structures with hundreds of thousands of square feet,” Jones. said.
He also said the presentation was “spot on. It was about Amazon’s development of centers to serve the overnight package market for homeowners.”
Such future-thinking is the sort of headsup that equipment dealers can utilize in decision-making about inventory and rental fleet. Michael Morton said he is hoping for continued networking.
Increasing membership from the current 35 companies is seen as a must. Zeibert believes there are opportunities to do so.
Enrolling more tech companies as associate members is a natural addition to membership, several suggest, because of all the technology that dealers depend upon in their rolling stock as well as in their offices. Expansion of membership criteria is part of what Salinas — who will move up from vice president to president in a few weeks — calls “adapting to change. I feel we have done that. but we have to continue doing it to maintain our relevance.”
Morton goes one step further and wonders if there isn’t a place in membership for others across the equipment spectrum.
Stern said such changes in membership criteria are possible, but not without a membership vote.
Earl K. Harbaugh is proud that Illinois Equipment Distributors is “the strongest chapter in the country. Still going strong after 70 years.”
His son Mark Harbaugh agrees.
Still, issues loom of great importance to the equipment industry, one of them being the chronic shortage of skilled tradespeople. Mark Harbaugh hopes IED can address that issue.
Harbaugh continued: “Kids can make a boatload of money and we need to figure out how to engage them. We don’t have enough coming up in the trades. The ponds we are all fishing out of for skilled help are so overfished. That’s the biggest challenge we have today.”
Cox believes some things don’t change and that the value of the association is one of them.
He said Casey Equipment has found Illinois Equipment Distributors to be “an incredibly valuable tool. It has created some great relationships for us with other dealers, and with vendors and suppliers as associate members, the kind of relationships that all dealers should want. It’s a tide-raises-allboats kind of thing.” (All photographs in this article are Copyright 2021 Construction Equipment Guide. All Rights Reserved.) CEG
