FELLING FT-30-2 LP Low Profile Tag Trailer
Recently, a national heavy equipment rental company and longtime customer of Felling Trailers was faced with a dilemma.
One of its national accounts, a renewable energy contractor, was working on a solar project that spanned several locations in its coverage area. It needed several heavy-duty triple reel trailers capable of hauling three 97 in. dia. by 77 in. by 10,000 lbs. wide reels for medium voltage (MV) underground cable.
Lead-time was of the utmost importance. With the solar projects in progress, the trailers were needed inside of a 4-week time frame. Standard build time for a reel trailer needing to carry three reels weighing 10,000 lbs. each would be 10-weeks or longer when starting with a new build. That kind of timeline was not acceptable.
Felling Trailers stocks millions of dollars of trailer inventory in various configurations/builds. The national rental company had utilized Felling Trailers’ stock inventory in the past and knew it could assist this time around too. When the rental company spoke to its Felling Trailers’ account rep., he put them in touch with Mark Rapp, Felling Trailers’ Utility & Telecom Product Specialist.
After learning the project’s details, Rapp suggested the FT-30-2 LP (low profile) a 15ton tag trailer. The FT-30-2 LP is a Felling Trailers model that is a standard inventoried trailer and would be a perfect model to convert to a heavy three-reel hauler.
The FT-30-2 LPs were mounted with a one-piece, three-reel rack assembly bolted directly to the flat deck surface. The reel rack assembly was manufactured with 3 in. by 3 in. heavy wall steel tubing. The assembly was equipped with a 2.88 in. diameter reel bar that spins on a 660 SAE continuous cast bronze bushing saddles. The reel bars were fitted with a cross arm to tie the reel spool to the reel bar and a locking collar to keep the reels centered.
Both the cross arm and locking collar are equipped with lifting hooks to safely aid in loading/unloading reels onto the rack assembly.
The renewable energy contractor uses the triple reel FT-30-2 LP units to bring the power from the solar fields. The rental company has ordered eight of these trailers that have gone directly to the job sites and are presently ordering the reel rack/trailer package for its rental inventory.
Along with the FT-30-2’s, the rental company recently added a set of FT-24-2 LP triple reels with smaller and lighter reels for the contractor’s task of providing conductor for the substations the main feeds are brought to or the solar project.
Cross-functionality, a removable reel rack on an equipment trailer ensures the trailer will remain utilized throughout its life. Too many times, a dedicated reel trailer is purchased for a specific application/project. When that job is complete, the reel trailer sits. This package allows the reel rack to be easily removed, and the trailer can then be used to haul equipment, materials, etc. When the need again arises, the reel rack assembly is easily placed back on the trailer and mounted to the trailer deck.

MONROE from page 67
The Monroe team offers expertise and in-house custom engineering, installation, manufacturing and distribution of performance-driven municipal, commercial and fleet vehicle solutions. The company has fostered relationships with municipal and town leaders in several regions across the United States to develop and manufacture fleets that help it address year-round municipal maintenance and safety projects. The Monroe team also has developed deep partnerships with truck dealerships across the country to better serve its end-user customers, including professional contractors, plumbers, electricians and more.
Towmaster Trailers, acquired by Monroe in 2017, was established in the early 1970s by Harlan Palm, who wanted to develop a highquality trailer solution to help him move skid-loaders. Over the years, new lines of trailers were developed, and the business grew. The Litchfield facility has had several expansions over that time, and stands at 190,000 sq. ft. now, with almost 190 staff working on both trailers and municipal plow trucks.
“We are known in the industry for our quality,” said Chris Pokornowksi, Towmaster’s trailer division sales manager. “We pay very close attention to every aspect, the fine details. We’ve got the best warranty in the industry [10-year structural] because we stand behind our product. We pride ourselves on our response times to our customers and our ability to give them quotes and technical responses with a very quick turnaround.”
The Towmaster team also stocks service and replacement parts for their products that can be shipped out the same or next day from their facility or dealer network across the country. While employees and dealership salespersons are provided in-depth training, customers are also invited on location to view offerings and understand the level of customization made available to them. With customer satisfaction as the driving force, both Pokornowski and Smith echo positive sentiments on future plans.
For more than 60 years, Monroe has kept its people front and center in every way; from lifelong customers, to the local communities it operates in, and the almost 1,000-strong corporate-wide workforce. And in the communities that Monroe is located, the company has worked with local high schools and technical colleges hosting workshops to learn the trade. The team organized COVID drive-thru testing sites, hosted five American Red Cross blood drives, bought gift cards from local small businesses, and even orchestrated a drive-through Halloween event to allow children to experience trick-or-treating in Monroe during the pandemic.
The Towmaster team has similarly committed themselves to the community. Last year alone, they quickly designed and manufactured 50 metal IV stands and delivered them to a nearby hospital after an influx of COVID-19 patients. They also hosted blood drives, supported local technical education initiatives, and hosted a socially-distant holiday light parade in Litchfield.
In early 2021, Monroe announced the acquisition of Southern Coach Commercial and Custom Vehicle Upfitting and looks forward to continuing to build upon the success that company has had for the past 40 years.
“We are extremely excited about having them be part of our team now,” said Smith. “We want to exceed our customers’ expectations; we’ll be doing that by developing our people and our processes. We want to deliver the best value we can provide, the unrivalled expertise that our team has, a simple buying experience, dependable trucks and trailers and best-in-class support. That’s what we are continually going to work on. Our goal is to grow.” CEG

To keep up with the latest innovations and equipment Western Products offers, ABC’s service technicians, mechanics and Rob attend the Western Wise annual factory training event for sales and service. ABC also offers in-store, hands-on training for all its plow and sander customers.
To provide customers with the service and parts they need, ABC is open seven days a week during the summer and six days during the winter months. During snow events, the company opens on Sundays as well.
ABC offers a substantial inventory of replacement parts over-the-counter and has the ability to have non-stocking parts or accessories within three to five business days.
The service facility is a two-bay shop with a 12-ton truck lift and an 18 ft. by 40 ft. wash bay.
“Staying connected with our customers’ needs, both for service and equipment, is a must to continued growth and overall sustainability,” said Rob.
Family Business
With a rich history behind them and a bright future ahead, ABC Rental continues to add leaves to its family tree. In addition to Rob and Tim, the next generation is involved in the family business. Tim’s son, Tony, has worked for the company for 17 years and is the lead mechanic/service technician.
Other long-term employees include Pam Bibeau, general manager (26 years) and Chris Kleineck, head mechanic/service technician (23 years).

BRIDGE from page 58
crete; blasting the repair areas clean; apply shotcrete and finally apply special surface finish,” said Duffy.
Making concrete repairs to the arch piers requires extensive scaffolding for access to all areas of the piers so crews can get to the deteriorated sections of the bridge and make repairs. Because of the bridge’s age, it’s important to determine what capacities it can support during construction.
“Aesthetically, we need to try and mesh together the portions of the bridge we are replacing, so they don’t stand out against the existing concrete,” said Duffy.
Equipment used on the project includes Manitowoc 999 crawler cranes; Peiner SK575 tower cranes; a Volvo 110 loader; a Yale 28k forklift; Genie GTH-844 telehandlers; and Genie and JLG 85-ft. and 135-ft. manlifts. The materials required for the rehabilitation work include various concrete mixes, epoxy rebar, post tension bars and temporary lumber.
The most time-consuming work involves the concrete surface repair areas.
“Access to these arch span and column areas is difficult, especially over the river,” said Duffy. “Most of the materials, including the rubble generated, need to be moved by hand. Once the shotcrete work is complete and cured, an extensive cathodic protection system is required to be installed afterward. Then, the access system can finally be removed. The work is very linear. As an example, arch span 5 required five months to complete the surface repair quantity encountered.” Short Elliott Hendrickson (SEH) and Olson & Nesvold Engineers (ONE) are the two prime consultant designers of the bridge, which closed to all traffic on March 30, 2020. Detours will be in effect until this fall, when the historic structure reopens to the public. CEG

Women Can Bring Valuable, Unique Skillsets to Construction
CAREERS from page 66
And because infrastructure is at the core of the U.S. economic recovery plan, the sector has seen an influx of money, which means a lot more jobs available.
The focus in 2021 for Women of Asphalt is “Women in the Field.” The goal is to draw more women to the industry.
Following ‘The
Golden Rule’
With pride comes awareness.
“Be aware of who you are.” Dickinson of CIS believes this holds true for all professionals, but particularly for women in construction.
She advises women to understand that men are going to act and process information differently from women in a given situation.
“When you’re in the minority, understand that this is what the majority is used to,” said Dickinson.
Acknowledge that it’s easier for men to communicate with each other because theirs is a well-oiled system that’s been in place for centuries.
Once you gain respect and credibility, then you can expect they’ll see the situation from your perspective, she added.
As an example, she talks about the crane industry’s lengthy and intense work on crane operator certification.
“There were so many debates about the right approach, what would be required and even whether certification would be required,” said Dickinson.
Dickinson said more women are working to make construction job sites safer by simply being aware of the differences between men and women.
“It gives us that extra measure of evaluation,” she said of women in the construction training field.
Women have to ask themselves how they can accomplish what needs to be done and do so safely.
“Figuring out how to do a job well and safely may be a natural outcome for the woman who asks before she decides how she will do a job,” she said.
An all-new crew may question if the other people on the team can and will do a job well.
Respect and professionalism on the job site can still be an issue today.
“Ignoring the possibilities of how quickly behaviors can cross the line jeopardizes employees, sites and companies,” said Dickinson.
To women exploring construction safety as a career field, she advises finding a job you really enjoy.
She believes though there’s no difference between a 21-year-old woman or man who has no experience in the construction industry.
However, they’re perceived differently because there are more men on the job site.
But women have a tendency to pay a lot of attention to detail, which is crucial on the safety side, she noted.
When you do bring points to the surface, do so when you feel strongly about it. And understand when speaking up will make a difference or not.
Conduct yourself with professionalism appropriate for the job site.
Finally: “Do your job well. Some jobs are physically more challenging for women. Recognize that, and don’t get yourself in a situation you’re not prepared for.”
A lot has changed since Emily Roebling became the first person to cross the East River in 1883 by way of the bridge she gave 10 years of her life to see completed.
In stepping in for her husband to help successfully finish the project, she opened doors for women into the construction industry. CEG
