Murphy Tractor welcomed contractors and equipment owners to the Medina County Fairgrounds in Medina, Ohio, for a handson demonstration showcasing John Deere’s newest excavators and an integrated suite of technologies designed to make operators more productive, efficient and confident on the job site.
Throughout the event, attendees climbed into the machines and experienced firsthand how John Deere has simplified advanced technology. From grade control to payload weighing and remote fleet management, the newest excavators combine intelligent features with an easy-to-use interface that helps operators of all skill levels get the most from their machines.
Among the highlights was Integrated Grade Control with standard 2D Grade Control and Auto Laser Catch, which automatically rebenches the excavator as it crosses the laser plane. The system can be upgraded to a full 3D SmartGrade package without requiring a second monitor. The new SmartWeigh system automatically measures bucket payloads to help prevent truck overloads while tracking productivity through the JDLink Operations Center.
John Deere also showcased Virtual Fences and Machine Damage Avoidance, allowing operators to set boom height, digging depth, reach and swing limits to help avoid overhead obstacles and underground utilities. The new 12.8-in. G5+ touchscreen display consolidates machine controls, camera views, and machine health information on one screen, while EZ Control simplifies lifting and precision movements. Attachment Manager stores settings for up to 20 hydraulic attachments, and Remote Display Access (RDA) allows Murphy Tractor technicians to remotely assist operators through JDLink, helping reduce downtime.
“Events like this are a great way to showcase what these machines can do,” said Bill Buckles, president of Murphy Tractor. “We’re excited for customers to see the new features and technology firsthand. These excavators are built in the USA, and once operators get in the seat, they can really see how easy the new technology is to use.”
After operating the equipment, Tyler Macali of Great Lakes Construction said the event demonstrated how much the machines have evolved.
“It was a great event. There are a lot of changes with the technology, and it’s good to see it all in one place,” Macali said. “John Deere has really kept technology at the forefront, and you can see how it’s making these machines easier to operate.”
Greg Winiewski of Great Lakes Construction agreed.
“It’s great to see John Deere getting into more integrated technology,” Winiewski said. “There are a lot of ways it’s improving the machines, and that’s only going to help contractors. The technology is becoming more user-friendly, and it saves time.”

On July 18, 2026, Lano Equipment and engcon welcomed contractors, operators and equipment owners to its Shakopee, Minn., location for engcon demo day, an event built around hands-on displays of tiltrotators and excavator attachments.
Rather than simply displaying equipment, Lano transformed part of its yard into an interactive demonstration area. Multiple-sized excavators were equipped with different attachment setups, each designed to mirror real-world job site tasks. The format allowed contractors to test and evaluate the equipment under realistic working conditions rather than through a traditional static display, giving them a better understanding of how the technology performs in the field.
Attendees had the opportunity to operate engcon-equipped excavators in practical applications. They could compare attachment configurations and see how each setup performed in different job site scenarios. From precision block placement to material handling, digging and grading, the activities were designed to replicate the kinds of work contractors encounter every day.
Members of the engcon and Lano teams were on site to provide product knowledge, answer questions and help attendees get the most out of each demonstration. Beyond the operating stations, the event highlighted Lano Equipment’s in-house service capabilities. The dealership is equipped to both sell and service engcon tiltrotators and attachments.
For contractors, that means service, replacement parts and technical support are available through the same dealership after the sale, reducing the need to rely on outside service providers. As attachment technology becomes more common on today’s job sites, having local technicians, parts and service helps contractors minimize downtime and keep equipment working in the field.
For attendees, the opportunity to get behind the controls and experience the machines firsthand was a highlight of the event.
“It was great being able to actually try the equipment instead of just watching videos,” said one attendee. “Getting in the seat and operating the machines gave me a much better understanding of what they’re capable of.”

LiuGong North America announced the commercial availability of its battery-electric construction and material handling portfolio, bringing to North America an electric platform supported by more than 60,000 battery-electric machines operating globally and validated through millions of operating hours in real-world applications.
Before introducing battery-electric equipment to North America, LiuGong spent more than 15 years proving its technology where it matters most: on working job sites, according to the manufacturer. While the heavy equipment industry continues to expand its adoption of battery-electric machines, LiuGong is introducing a platform refined through multiple generations of deployment across mining, ports, aggregates, tunneling, municipal operations, warehouses, container terminals and construction projects worldwide.
Operational data collected from thousands of working machines has driven continuous improvements in battery performance, charging systems, thermal management, diagnostics, serviceability and long-term durability. That experience has enabled LiuGong to bring a mature electric platform to North America that has already demonstrated its performance under demanding real-world operating conditions, said the manufacturer.
One LiuGong battery-electric wheel loader has surpassed 20,000 operating hours in continuous production service — roughly the equivalent of a decade or more of operation for many wheel loaders. Those hours were accumulated on an active job site rather than under controlled testing conditions, providing real-world validation of the platform’s durability, productivity and long-term reliability.
For North American contractors, fleet owners, ports, municipalities and industrial operators, LiuGong’s battery-electric portfolio represents a mature, commercially proven platform designed to deliver the performance, uptime and reliability expected from heavy equipment without requiring customers to become early adopters of first-generation technology, according to LiuGong.
LiuGong’s initial North American batteryelectric portfolio includes the 856HE battery-electric wheel loader, 820TE batteryelectric loader, 924FE battery-electric excavator and LRSE4531E fully electric 45-ton reach stacker, along with a growing range of battery-electric forklifts, warehouse equipment and material handling solutions. This initial lineup marks the beginning of a broader North American rollout, with additional battery-electric products

expected throughout 2027 as LiuGong continues expanding and validating its electric equipment portfolio for the region. Together, these machines represent one of the industry’s broadest battery-electric equipment portfolios available from a single manufacturer, said LiuGong.
For most fleet owners, the decision to electrify ultimately comes down to economics.
According to LiuGong, its battery-electric machines are priced below competing battery-electric models while reducing operating costs by approximately 40 to 50 percent compared with comparable diesel equipment. Lower energy consumption, fewer service requirements and simplified maintenance help reduce TCO throughout the machine’s operating life.
Those performance and operating cost advantages are the result of more than 20 years of battery research and development and more than 15 years of commercial electric equipment experience. Continuous operational data from real-world applications has driven improvements in
battery performance, charging systems, thermal management, diagnostics, software, serviceability and long-term durability across multiple generations of LiuGong batteryelectric equipment.
Successfully deploying battery-electric equipment in the United States and Canada required far more than changing charging connectors.
LiuGong engineers adapted the platform to North American charging standards, electrical infrastructure, software requirements, safety certifications, environmental condition and dealer service practices to ensure compatibility with regional operating environments. The result is equipment engineered for dependable operation, seamless charging integration and simplified serviceability across a wide range of North American job sites, according to LiuGong.
At the core of every LiuGong batteryelectric machine is a liquid-cooled battery
management system (BMS) built around an advanced cell-to-pack battery architecture.
The battery management system continuously monitors battery health, state of charge, charging, thermal performance, diagnostics and safety systems to optimize battery performance, maximize service life and support long-term fleet uptime.
“Customers shouldn’t have to choose between proven performance and zeroemission technology,” said Andrew Ryan, president of LiuGong North America.
“Our battery-electric platform has already proven itself through millions of commercial operating hours around the world. Now we’re bringing that experience to North America with machines engineered specifically for this market and backed by years of commercial operation.”
With more than 60,000 battery-electric machines operating globally, millions of operating hours accumulated in real-world applications and an expanding portfolio designed specifically for North America, LiuGong is bringing contractors, fleet owners, ports, municipalities, and industrial operators a mature electric platform built on years of commercial experience rather than first-generation technology.

On larger jobs, a backhoe often supports production by handling the work that doesn’t justify pulling larger equipment away from critical tasks.
A backhoe loader allows a single operator to move between excavation, material handling, site preparation and cleanup without requiring additional equipment for every task.
Spend enough time around road crews and you’ll notice something interesting. Even on projects filled with specialized equipment, there’s usually a backhoe loader somewhere on site.
At first glance, that might seem surprising.
Roadbuilding fleets have become increasingly specialized over the years. Excavators, dozers, wheel loaders and paving equipment are designed to perform specific tasks with impressive efficiency. Yet despite that evolution, the backhoe loader remains a fixture on projects across the country.
The reason is simple: road construction demands flexibility.
No two jobs are exactly alike, and even the best-planned projects encounter unexpected challenges. Utility conflicts, changing work priorities and evolving site conditions require equipment that can adapt as quickly as crews do.
That’s where the backhoe loader continues to prove its value.
Contractors today face pressure from multiple directions.
One of the biggest challenges continues to be labor. Many contractors are finding it harder to recruit and retain experienced equipment operators, while veteran workers retire and fewer new entrants join the industry. At the same time, infrastructure investment and ongoing road, utility and maintenance work are keeping demand for skilled labor high.
In addition to labor challenges, managers must contend with rising equipment costs, transportation expenses and tight project schedules. As a result, fleet decisions are increasingly focused on getting the most

A
value from available resources, both human and machine.
To address these challenges, contractors are looking for equipment that can contribute across multiple phases of a project.
A backhoe loader allows a single operator to move between excavation, material handling, site preparation and cleanup without requiring additional equipment for every task. A crew might spend the morning excavating around a utility crossing, move aggregate after lunch and finish the day preparing an area for paving operations – all with the same machine and operator.
On larger jobs, a backhoe often supports production by handling the work that doesn’t justify pulling larger equipment away from critical tasks, whether that’s reopening a trench, cleaning up around drainage structures or moving materials where they’re needed. On smaller projects, a backhoe loader may serve as a primary machine.
Either way, the goal is the same: keep crews productive and projects moving.
Modern road projects rarely involve pavement alone.
Many include drainage improvements, water and sewer infrastructure, telecommunications work or utility relocations. Crews often move between roadway construction and utility-related activities throughout the day, sometimes within the same work zone.
To make matters more complex, much of this work takes place on active roadways where maintaining traffic flow is a priority. Contractors must work within tight footprints, limited lane closures and congested rights of way, making maneuverability and versatility especially valuable.
see JCB page 32

On smaller projects, a backhoe loader may serve as a primary machine. JCB from page 30

To solve these challenges safely and efficiently, crews need equipment that can handle a variety of responsibilities.
For these situations, the backhoe is an ideal solution. It can excavate around utilities, load material, assist with drainage installation and support cleanup operations as work progresses. Its compact footprint and ability to quickly transition between tasks allow crews to complete work efficiently while minimizing disruptions to traffic and surrounding operations.
Rather than waiting for another machine to become available, crews can often address issues as they arise and maintain momentum throughout the project. Whether supporting utility crews ahead of paving operations or handling punch-list work along an active roadway, the machine’s flexibility helps keep projects moving.
Whether it’s a highway improvement project stretching across several miles or a maintenance crew responsible for multiple repair sites, road projects are rarely confined to a single location. Moving equipment efficiently can have a significant impact on productivity.
Every time a machine needs to be loaded onto a trailer, transported to another location and unloaded again, crews lose valuable time. Coordinating transportation also requires additional personnel and equipment, adding another layer of complexity to already demanding schedules.
A backhoe loader’s ability to travel between nearby work areas without requiring additional transport equipment helps crews respond quickly as priorities shift. If an issue arises at another section of the project or a crew needs support at a nearby location, the machine can often be moved and put to work with minimal disruption.
That flexibility is particularly valuable for contractors performing road maintenance, utility repairs and municipal infrastructure work, where crews may be responsible for multiple sites in a single day. Instead of waiting for
directly to the next task and keep work progressing. It’s one of the reasons backhoes continue to be a common sight on road and utility projects alike.
One of the biggest advantages of a backhoe loader is that its value isn’t limited to the machine itself. Attachments allow contractors to adapt the machine to changing job site needs without bringing in additional equipment.
That flexibility can be especially useful on road and utility projects, where crews often encounter a wide range of tasks over the course of a single day. Attachments make it easy to transition between jobs.
Breakers can remove damaged pavement and concrete, planers can support asphalt repair work and thumbs or grapples can improve material handling around utilities, debris and demolition materials. Multi-purpose buckets add further versatility for grading, loading and cleanup operations.
For contractors focused on controlling costs and improving utilization, attachments offer a practical way to expand capability without expanding the fleet. Rather than dedicating another machine to occasional tasks, crews can often equip a backhoe loader to handle the work and keep the project moving.
The roadbuilding industry continues to evolve, but some challenges remain constant. Contractors still need equipment that can adapt to changing conditions, support productive crews and contribute wherever it’s needed.
Looking to maximize your day-to-day operations? Pressure-compensated load-sensing (PCLS) hydraulics on the redesigned John Deere 310SL Backhoe Loader smoothly increase cycle times with 16% greater rear backhoe trenching productivity* and 15% more craning capacity.** Along with John Deere Connected Support™, you can elevate your underground operation above expectations and plan to do more every day.
That’s why the backhoe loader continues to earn its place on roadbuilding projects.

Among the range of skid steer attachments designed for land clearing, ranch maintenance and site preparation applications that I Dig Texas offers is the AMFG Barracuda
Texas, the Barracuda was developed after the company said the attachment was designed to eliminate the need to switch between multiple tools while handling brush and root
I Dig Texas said the attachment is designed to operate in
With the jaws closed, operators can use the V-shaped front

edge to work underneath root systems, rocks and trees, such as mesquite. The rounded bottom edge is designed to help operators leverage the weight of the machine to pry material out of the ground rather than relying solely on lifting force.
According to I Dig Texas, the closed-jaw configuration allows operators to use the attachment similarly to a pry bar for grubbing trees, rocks and stubborn root systems.
The Barracuda also functions as a grapple-style attachment when the jaws are opened. In this configuration, operators can grab and pull cedar trees, fence posts and other above-ground material directly from the ground using the machine’s lifting power.
I Dig Texas noted that the grapple-style operation is intended for handling shallow root systems and pulling material above ground without switching attachments.
According to I Dig Texas, the attachment is intended for a variety of land management and clearing applications, including ranch maintenance, fence line cleanup and construction site preparation.
The Barracuda is built using 3/4-in. side plates and bottom plates throughout the jaw assembly. The jaws are secured using 40-mm pins and 4-in. bushings, with greaseable access points positioned on the rear of the jaws for servicing.
I Dig Texas said the attachment is manufactured by Amerekan Manufacturing in Dewey, Okla., the sister company of I Dig Texas. According to the company, the unit is built using American-made steel and in-house manufactured cylinders.

last 40 years where federal funds were resourced as part of the funding. A full environmental impact statement process is required to obtain the clearances required to begin advanced construction processes even prior to the dam itself and the permitted flood spillway systems.
“In our case, the dam and spillway are slated to be bid in late July,” said Sayre. “This reservoir is a multi-purpose reservoir where a super majority of its designated permitted purpose is drinking water supply. Remaining purposes are flood control, combined with recreation impacts to the state and local economy.”
The project honors Missouri native and former U.S. Senator Roy Blunt, who played a key role in securing almost $80 million in federal funds to help pay for the reservoir. In addition, the North Central Missouri Regional Water Commission (NCMRWC) and the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) signed a contract which provides an extra $62.9 million of NRCS funds, representing the balance of federal funds needed to complete the 79-ft.-tall earthen dam and spillway.
According to the official news release, Olsson is the engineer of record for the dam and is the contract administrator for work performed. A general contractor will be selected and will team with pre-qualified specialty contractors to carry out the work.
“Following the bid for the dam and spillway, we will progress with the raw water intake and pump station, which will convey

The necessary bridges for the project were substantially completed in December 2025. Since then, lakebed clearing operations have been ongoing. Sayre explained that in order to prepare for the dam and spillway, many tasks and large construction projects had to be finished.
“There were many hundred acres of tree harvesting, as well as clearing and disposal of the lakes and utility corridors and access
pool acreage is approximately 2,250 acres, so there are a lot of preparations to control organics and lakebed management to benefit long-term water quality.”
Cleaning the lakebed began around 2016 and included removing solid waste. Tree clearing for the dam site began in 2021, with the clearing of navigation channels continuing. Work on roads began in 2022. Access roads had to be built to assist in the clearing, as well as long-term road impact replacements, prior to the reservoir
new roads and advanced work total approximately $60,000,000 and involved many spanning bridges which had to be in place.”
Roadway replacements and rehabilitation projects have been time-consuming, according to Sayre.
“More than 15 miles of roadways are
“These

“While we were working on the roadway projects for the construction access, utility corridors were also advanced to replace water lines, electric lines, fiber lines etc. These current projects for utilities in the works total approximately $15,000,000 to make sure the region’s utilities are completed in advance of inundation.”
“We are progressing on many planned projects that will be completed concurrently with the dam and spillway. After that, other projects will continue such as the marina and recreational areas to access the reservoir.”
The reservoir also will be managed to provide storm-water, flood mitigation and recreational benefits to the public. Projects in the design phase include a regional sewer effort that will bring services to the village of Pollock, as well as the many existing residences along its corridor of service.
The city of Milan is planning to receive the wastewater, treat it at its wastewater treatment plant and play a role in the operations of the regional sewer as a member of the NCMRWC. The NCMRWC is the local sponsor and owner of the reservoir and its appurtenances.
The project is funded by the citizens of Sullivan County, current NCMRWC customers, NRCS and the State of Missouri.

It’s a mammoth project: Current plans foresee the complete renovation and modernization of the Mont Blanc Tunnel over its full length of almost 12 km by 2042.
Working on the project are two wheeled pavers from Vögele — a latest-generation SUPER 1803-5 X and a SUPER 1303-3i.
Around 2 million vehicles a year travel through the Mont Blanc Tunnel. Since the 1960s, the tunnel has linked Chamonix in France to Courmayeur in Italy, making it one of the most important north-south corridors in the European road network.
Over almost the next two decades, the infrastructure is to be modernized in stages, and the safety technology will be brought up to date. However, since the tunnel is of the utmost importance for tourism on both the French and Italian sides, it can only be closed for a few weeks — and countless nights — at a time.
As part of the project, contractor Cogeis SpA was commissioned to carry out extensive resurfacing work on a 400 m section of the tunnel. This was a challenge, as tunnel sites mean confined spaces, darkness, restricted visibility, strict safety requirements and a tightly scheduled project timeline.
In just one night, the aim was to pave the entire section with a 5-cm surface course across a width of 6.5 m. In
cases like this, everything depends on efficient machine technology, so the contractor chose to use a latest-generation wheeled paver from Vögele, the SUPER 1803-5 X.
With a laydown rate of up to 700 t/h, this representative of the Universal Class is Vögele’s most powerful wheeled paver and can pave widths of up to 8.25 m. This enabled the paving crew to use the SUPER 1803-5 X for the seamless paving of both carriageways in a single pass.
Its agility also played an important role, as its Pivot Steer steering brake reduces its turning circle to just 4.2 m, enabling it to maneuver with ease, even in the narrow tunnel. It was backed up by its “little brother,” the SUPER 1303-3i: This Compact Class paver allowed the paving crew to pave three emergency parking and breakdown bays with a length of 150 m and a width of 2.8 m parallel to the two-lane carriageway.
The technologies of the new “Dash 5” generation brought several advantages on this tunnel project, including, among other things, the new automatic and comfort functions of the SUPER 1803-5 X.
The convenient Paver Access Control (PAC), for ex ample, was a great help to the crew when starting up and shutting down the paver.

The crew was able to use the control unit on the screed to control all initial steps from the ground just by pressing a series of buttons: turning on the lights and starting the engine, putting hardtop, lowering the screed and booting up the machine control system. It enabled operators to switch on the integrated lighting in the dark tunnel and start preparing for work at once.
The optional Light Package Plus of the “Dash 5” paver was a great help in the Mont Blanc Tunnel in more ways than one.
Apart from being easy to activate without any installation effort or setup time, the new lighting system provided optimal illumination: The package contains additional integrated LED lights in the hardtop and in the cross-member of the control panel, illumination of the tow point rams, freely positionable headlights and a special hardtop extension with powerful LEDs. These evenly illuminate the working area to a width of up to 10 m and up to 4 m behind the screed.
“This enabled us to set up and prepare the paver quickly without the need for additional lighting and then work in ideal lighting conditions,” said Lori Bibe, paver operator at Cogeis SpA.
Another benefit in the Mont Blanc Tunnel: The SUPER 1803-5 X has a drive concept that significantly reduces both fuel consumption, carbon emissions and noise. The major role here is played by the improved EcoPlus low-emissions package. This reduces fuel consumption and, in combination with other measures, cuts noise emissions.
The latest-generation AB 500 TV extending screed also works with lower noise levels than before.
“These factors are critical, especially in narrow, enclosed spaces like the construction site Antonio Lachi said.

The new installation aid for bolt-on screed extensions and the efficient heating of the compacting systems also help to minimize the set-up
“The new extending screed is very user friendly and saved us a lot of time here,” Lachi
In combination with the optimized material management, which ensured a consistent supply of material and an ideal head of material in front of the screed, the paving crew achieved a high standard of paving quality. All of this occurred despite the tight deadlines and the asphalt having to travel for around two hours in winter Tunnel shows just what the “Dash 5” generation can achieve in day-to-day situations: more convenience, simple operation and greater efficiency when paving.

Polymer Paver made its world debut at ConExpo-Con/AGG 2026 in Las Vegas, Nev.
GOMACO introduced the polymer paver for the ultra-thin overlay market.
The polymer paver can pave overlays on bridge decks and flat slabs in widths from 6 to 30 ft. The all-welded steel frame sections feature bolted connections, allowing easy width changes. The welded polymer paving pan sections are available in widths to match the frame sections.
Vibration is provided by sectional rotary eccentrics supported by ball bearings. The vibration is coordinated to start and stop with the machine movement. A dual-drive 9 in. variable speed auger spreads the material ahead of the paving pan.
The polymer paver’s power is provided by a 74 hp diesel engine, which eliminates the inconvenience and expense of diesel exhaust fluid (DEF). Four tracks allow for easy operation and loading/unloading. A four-
bogie option allows for paving up against a barrier wall.
The polymer paver features the G+ control system for grade and steering. A 10-in. fullcolor display provides the operator with control over all paving machine functions. The control system is multi-lingual and can toggle between metric and imperial settings. The tethered control display is magnetically mounted and can be positioned where the operator prefers for optimal operator visibility.
The polymer paver made its world debut at ConExpo-Con/AGG 2026 in Las Vegas, Nev., in booth C30282. It was be part of GOMACO’s display of 13 pieces of equipment showcasing the company’s full line of concrete paving and support equipment.

Machinery & Supplies Co. Aggregate to vice president of Aggregate.

In this role, Hosch will continue to be responsible for sales, rentals and technical support of RMS’s crushing, screening and environmental product lines, such as Astec, Masaba, Epiroc, CDE, Sandvik, Ecoverse, Doppstadt and more throughout Iowa, Minnesota and portions of Nebraska and South Dakota.
“Since assuming the responsibility for managing the merged Ruffridge Johnson and RMS aggregate sales teams last fall, Dave has proven to be a very capable leader of the much larger organization. Elevating him to the level of vice president underscores our confidence in his leadership,” said Russell Sheaffer, president of RMS.
Hosch will continue to lead the team of aggregate sales specialists and aggregate support specialists, as well as pit and quarry supplies.
Hosch joined RMS in 2024 through the acquisition of Ruffridge Johnson, of which he was president. He will continue to work out of the Savage branch and report to Sheaffer. For more information, visit rmsequipment. com.

Road Machinery & Supplies Co. (RMS) announced that Dan Olson has been promoted to the position of vice president of Construction Equipment Sales. Olson was previously the sales manager of the Savage, Minn., facility and he replaces the position held by Ben Schmidtlein, who served as vice president of sales.
Olson’s slight but meaningful title change underscores RMS’ commitment to driving greater focus on all of its construction equipment business. In this new capacity, he will report directly to Russell Sheaffer, president of RMS.
Olson has spent his entire career in sales, first as a sales representative and later growing into various sales leadership roles including two at RMS.
“Since joining the company Dan has demonstrated a strong understanding of our market and has exemplified outstanding leadership and customer relationship skills,” said Sheaffer.
Effective immediately, Olson will be responsible for managing the construction sales activities of Brad Carlson, service manager of northern Minnesota; Luther

new equipment manager; and Chris Potter, smart construction and paving solutions manager.
RMS is in the process of identifying Olson’s replacement as quickly as possible. This will allow him to focus his efforts on more strategic and less transactional work, at which time he’ll assume responsibilities for additional sales-related functions.

The pictured SV544-1 variant is a padfoot model (SV544T-1) with the following factory-installed optional equipment: bolt-through design smooth shell kit, enclosed cab and hydraulic leveling blade.
SAKAI America Inc. has officially begun shipping the SV544-1 Series vibratory single drum soil compactor to its dealer network. As the latest update to the best-selling 84-in. SV544 line, the SV544-1 introduces targeted powertrain improvements designed to enhance overall performance and efficiency on the job site.
The primary update to the SV544-1 is the integration of the Cummins F3.8 Performance Series engine, which now delivers 148 hp (110 kW). This engine provides a 14 percent increase in peak horsepower over the previous 130 hp model at the same rpm. Operators also will experience a 23 percent increase in peak torque, rising from 360 lb.-ft. to 443 lb.-ft., delivered 100 rpm sooner for improved responsiveness under load. Alongside this power increase, the SV544-1 offers improved fuel efficiency by an estimated 8 percent and features an ECO mode for further savings. The engine also operates with reduced noise levels and provides an
8.2 percent reduction in CO2 emissions by utilizing the proven Cummins Single Module, according to the company.
“The SV544 has long been our bestselling model, known for its proven SAKAI reliability, ease-of-use, and durability,” said Brad Belvin, manager of sales and marketing of SAKAI America. “With the SV544-1, we are improving that legacy by giving contractors more usable power, while simultaneously cutting fuel costs. It’s a practical update designed to support job site efficiency.”
To support these mechanical upgrades, SAKAI engineers also have implemented a simplified ECM harness for improved machine integration as well as other packaging changes. The SV544-1 otherwise retains the familiar features operators rely on, including straightforward analog controls that eliminate the need for failure-prone touch screens or multi-function panels. The machine continues to come standard with user-selectable traction control, a
heavy-duty center hitch and long-life isolators engineered to last up to 5,000 hours, according to the company.
“We are proud that the SV544-1 is fully assembled in our Georgia, USA factory,” said Wes Shepherd, VP of operations of SAKAI America. “As we prepare to celebrate 50 years in North America and 25 years of local manufacturing here in Adairsville this fall, producing this updated model is a testament to our team’s ongoing commitment. We continue to combine legendary Japanese engineering with reliable USA-based assembly and support.”
The SAKAI SV544-1 Series is currently shipping to authorized SAKAI dealers. The model line features operating weights starting from 24,405 lbs. and offers up to 63 percent (32 degrees) gradeability. Every unit is backed by SAKAI’s 3-year / 3,000-hour warranty.

These investments “have helped support construction activity, job growth and stronger economic performance,” said Jeffrey D. Shoaf, CEO of AGC. “Our new polling shows voters overwhelmingly recognize those benefits and want to see a new bill before the current law expires.”
AGC believes construction funding supports state projects, improves travel times, strengthens supply chains and supports construction employment.
The association said funding put in place would provide greater certainty for contractors and sustain public infrastructure investment.
“Highway construction is one of the strongest segments of the construction market,” said Ken Simonson, AGC chief economist.
“Infrastructure investment is offsetting weakness in several private segments,” he added, noting that spending totaled $2.210 trillion in May.
That figure is 0.1 percent above the revised April rate but 1.5 percent below the May 2025 level.
AGC reports that public construction spending increased 0.5 percent in May and was 0.3 percent higher than one year earlier.
Highway and street construction, which comprise the largest public category, increased 0.6 percent from April and 2.9 percent over the past year.
That segment supports economic growth through improved movement of people and freight and demand for construction materials and equipment.
Though the new BUILD Act allots less money to transit funding nationwide, Congress can support transit programs through other means.
The nonprofit Urban.org believes programs such as Capital Investment Grants
for projects into the future.
“These cuts could deeply affect communities across the country,” wrote Yonah Freemark, Amanda Hermans, Tomi Rajninger and Gabe Samuels.
“Public transportation offers families an affordable alternative to driving,” yet most U.S. cities lag behind other countries in service availability and affordability.
Writing for urban.org, the four noted that rural areas in particular rely on federal support to provide transit services. That’s why many states are creating their own funding vehicles for not only highway but transit infrastructure improvements.
In July, Gov. Gavin Newsom announced nearly $2.5 billion has been earmarked for transportation projects across California. The goal is to enhance connectivity for people who walk and bike and rebuilding vital routes to increase access for transit users.
“These investments will support local streets and roads, state highways, public transit and intercity rail projects while creating more than 150,000 jobs,” he said.
More than 150 projects will improve highway systems, advance public transit and create good-paying jobs, Newsom said in announcing the funding.
According to Newsom these investments are guided by his Build More, Faster — For All agenda.
“We are ushering in the golden age of transportation,” said Newsom. “Investments like these drive our economy while creating good-paying jobs across the state.”
Southwest Los Angeles County mobility hubs, at $257 million, will improve connectivity for pedestrians, bicyclists, transit riders and highway commuters. This includes thousands of residents and

global visitors traveling to attend major cultural and sporting events, the governor’s announcement noted.
In New Jersey, the state’s transit board voted in July to raise spending by 11 percent over last year’s budget, according to an article on newjerseymonitor.com.
Nikita Biryukov reported that “after facing financial headwinds,” the board approved $3.5 billion in spending for the fiscal year that began July 1.
The largest operating budget in the agency’s history, it comes after 12 months that saw collections tumble and labor spending surge beyond expectations.
“This governor is the only governor in recent memory who has given us an 11 percent increase in budget,” said Kris Kolluri, NJ Transit CEO. “I don’t know when the last time that happened. That is how you begin to put the pieces together for this agency to make sure we do it.”
Biryukov noted that the agency’s fiscal 2027 budget maintains funding for buses, trains and light rail cars across the state for years.
State subsidies are expected to account for a majority of the agency’s revenue in the current fiscal year.
NJ Transit paid nearly $103 million more for labor than it expected last year, wrote Biryukov. Spending on fringe benefits came in $70.5 million above budget and the agency faces a range of cost increases that outpace the rate of inflation.
“The costs are real,” said Kolluri. “I know people don’t want to understand or care because they are frustrated sometimes when their train is canceled.”
He understands, she said, “but the fact that the labor contracts cost $55 million more than they did last year is a fact.”
Chicago RTA awarded $10.9 million in access to transit program funding to improve connections for people who walk, ride or roll
to transit services.
According to Brandon Lewis writing for masstransitmag.com, the Chicago Regional Transportation Authority will fund 21 new projects.
The Access to Transit program, funding municipalities’ construction of small-scale transit capital improvement projects, is the largest in agency history.
The new projects will be the eighth group accepted to the program, reported Lewis. The program has funded 50 projects since its beginning in 2014.
The Northern Illinois Transit Authority (NITA) Act will provide an estimated $1.2 billion in new annual operating funding.
The RTA board approved an amendment that allocates funding to short-term, riderfocused improvements including the Access to Transit program.
The village of Hillside is improving access to transit with safe and ADA-compliant travel options for pedestrians and bicyclists, noted Lewis. Improvements include adding on-street bike lanes and route wayfinding in both directions.
The Metra commuter rail system is requesting funding to enhance facilities at the Evanston Central Street, Mokena and Clarendon Hills stations.
Evanston Central and Mokena will receive a new warming shelter and modern signage, while Clarendon Hills will be brought into full ADA compliance.
The city of Waukegan will improve pedestrian safety and accessibility at its transit hub served by both commuter rail and bus. Improvements will include a midblock crossing with flashing pedestrian signage to better access the main bus stop. High-visibility crosswalks, realignment of the pedestrian path to the Metra station and pedestrian-visibility features also are planned.

Yanmar Compact Equipment North America has produced its 50,000th machine at its Grand Rapids, Minn., manufacturing facility, marking a major milestone in the company’s North American growth strategy and its continued investment in domestic manufacturing.
The 50,000th unit, a TL100 compact track loader, rolled off the production line in May 2026. The milestone was celebrated during the company’s Employee Appreciation BBQ and Town Hall, where commemorative decals were affixed to both the 50,000th and 50,001st machines, alongside the Grand Rapids production team.
“Reaching 50,000 units is more than a production milestone; it is a reflection of the strength of our people, the quality of our products and the investments we are making in North American manufacturing,” said Anna Christine Sgro, president of Yanmar Compact Equipment North America.
“With more than $60 million committed to Grand Rapids, we have the production foundation, technology and team to support our dealers, serve our customers and grow our position in the compact equipment market for years to come.”

Since acquiring ASV in 2019, Yanmar has invested more than $32 million in automation, innovation, manufacturing technology and facility improvements at its Grand Rapids facility. An additional $30 million is planned over the next five years to expand engineering capability, improve production capacity and support future product development, the company said.
Corey Chick (L), plant director, and Cary Safe, research and development director and legacy employee, stand in front of the TL100, the 50,000th machine off the line.
At ConExpo-Con/AGG 2026, the company announced the unification of its ASV and Yanmar compact track loader portfolios under the Yanmar brand. The combined lineup creates one of the industry’s most versatile compact track loader offerings, with two distinct undercarriage technologies, multiple frame sizes and solutions for construction, land

As the equipment industry continues to face a shortage of an estimated 10,000 technicians each year, the AED Foundation (AEDF) is expanding its efforts to build the future workforce by reaching a major milestone: Waukegan High School has become the Foundation’s 150th AEDF Recognized High School.
The achievement marks another significant step in the Foundation’s mission to connect students with rewarding careers in the equipment industry while helping dealers and manufacturers address the growing demand for skilled technicians, the association said.
“Becoming an AED Foundation Recognized High School is a tremendous milestone for Waukegan High School and our new Diesel Mechanics program,” said David Marks, CTE academic chair/ coordinator of Waukegan High School.
“This recognition validates our commitment to providing students with an industryaligned education that prepares them for high-demand careers in the equipment industry. Through our partnership with the AED Foundation, our students will have access to high-quality curriculum, industry
standards and career opportunities that will help build the next generation of skilled technicians. We are honored to be part of this growing network of recognized schools and proud to contribute to strengthening the future workforce.”
The AEDF Recognized High School Program introduces students to careers in the equipment industry through handson technical education and industryaligned curriculum while cultivating relationships among students, educators, schools, dealers, manufacturers and industry partners to build a sustainable talent pipeline for the equipment industry. In addition to recognizing high school programs, the Foundation also accredits college equipment technology programs, ensuring educational programs at both the secondary and post-secondary levels meet industry standards and prepare graduates for successful careers.
The success of the program is made possible by AED members and industry partners who invest their time, expertise and resources into developing tomorrow’s workforce, the association said.
“West Side Tractor is committed to
our future workforce,” said Beth Bayless, training and development specialist of West Side Tractor Sales. “Helping students learn about the great career opportunities that exist in our industry is an important mission for West Side Tractor. We’re so excited that AED has reached 150 Recognized High Schools. It’s a great network that provides valuable connections and support for the AED-recognized schools.”
Over the past four years, the AED Foundation has transformed workforce development across the equipment industry through accomplishments that include:
• 104 Accredited College Programs across North America;
• 150 Recognized High School Programs introducing students to careers in the equipment industry;
• More than 5,000 students connected with equipment industry employers through AED Foundation workforce events;
• Eighty-six percent of AED Foundation program students enter careers within the equipment industry including 1,447 newly certified technicians; and
• More than $100,000 returned to
the equipment industry through federal and state workforce grants supporting workforce development initiatives.
AED Foundation Standards Committee and its Evaluation Team Leaders, who have dedicated more than 4,000 hours to evaluating post-secondary programs and curriculum to ensure graduates, are prepared to meet the evolving technical and workforce demands of the equipment industry, according to the association.
“Reaching 150 Recognized High Schools is an incredible milestone because every school represents new opportunities to inspire students and strengthen our industry’s future workforce,” said Brian P. McGuire, president of the AED Foundation. “The success of this program reflects the commitment of educators, industry partners and AED members who are working together to address the skilled labor shortage. By expanding our network of Recognized High Schools, we’re creating more opportunities for students to discover rewarding careers while helping ensure the equipment industry has the talented workforce it needs for years to come.”
In Seattle, Wash., this summer the Sound Transit board authorized two contracts to get the West Seattle Link Extension up and moving.
A massive $341 million contract with Jacobs Engineering is expected to move the project to final design stage, according to theurbanist.org. It comes as Sound Transit has received its first permit approvals from the city of Seattle.
A contract for continued project management on the West Seattle and Ballard Link projects was awarded to Mott MacDonald and Connect Seattle Partners.
West Seattle’s transit budget increased by $406.8 million, while Ballard Link’s budget was increased by $16.3 million.
“These are among the first steps we’re taking following the adoption of our updated plan,” said Dave Somers, Sound Transit board chair. “They demonstrate our commitment to maintaining momentum, delivering on our original ST3 vision. We’re moving forward with urgency.”
This spring, bus and light rail service for Pittsburgh, Pa., got a cash infusion from VisitPittsburgh in anticipation of the NFL Draft weekend.
Adam Babetski of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported that the cash infusion would cover transit operating costs. The upgrades were the latest phase of what the tourism organization calls a “multimodal transportation strategy.”
Jerad Bechar, VisitPittsburgh president, said the group would create park-and-ride services for the draft site with new temporary bus routes.
Pittsburgh Regional Transit (PRT) was to expand light rail

This summer California Gov. Gavin Newsom announced $2.5 billion has been set aside for transportation projects across the state to enhance connectivity for people who walk and bike. Also planned are rebuilds of routes to increase access for transit users.
service to make it easier for fans traveling from Downtown or the South Hills, he said.
Regional transportation funding has been earmarked for several transit projects in the Richmond, Va., area, according to richmondbizsense.com.
The Greater Richmond Transit Co. (GRTC) plans a new downtown transfer hub and extend rapid service under a larger allocation for multiple projects.
The Central Virginia Transportation Authority (CVTA) awarded $10 million for the proposed transfer station, a nexus for GRTC bus routes across the region.
The transit lines would converge at the station for riders to transfer in a central place. It replaces a temporary transfer
point operating across the street.
Transit agencies must remind policy makers of the connect between public transportation and public health, argues the Transportation Research Board (TRB).
StreetsBlogUSA reported that a TRB-prepared study calls for agencies to do a better job of conveying that message.
TRB identified seven healthy outcomes linked to public transit, including physical activity, cleaner air, fewer crashes and expanding social networks.
In Boston, a health assessment identified the negative consequences service cuts would have on community health and economic well-being.
A study showed bus service saved a New Mexico county more than $600,000 yearly in reduced hypertension and connections to preventive care.
And two studies in Portland, Ore., found people living near transit have lower health-care costs.
Transportation and transit investments “are about more than infrastructure,” said Clarissa Falcon, California transportation commission chair.
“They are investments in people, communities and opportunity,” Falcon said of Gov. Newsom’s transit construction funding package.
The funds “will help ensure our transportation system continues to serve the needs of communities … today while preparing for the challenges of tomorrow.” CEG

In response to the earthquake in Venezuela, the Caterpillar Foundation announced a $250,000 donation to the Center for Disaster Philanthropy’s (CDP) Global Recovery Fund to support rapid response and longterm recovery in Venezuela.
CDP is collaborating with local nongovernmental organizations to deploy immediate needs, including food and water, medical supplies, temporary housing, relief kits and more.
“Our thoughts are with the people and communities of Venezuela who have been impacted by this devastating earthquake,” said Asha Varghese, president of the Caterpillar Foundation. “The loss and disruption caused by disasters like this can be overwhelming, and recovery often requires sustained support from many collaborators. The Caterpillar Foundation is committed to standing with communities during times of crisis, and this donation will
help provide critical relief and assistance to those affected.”
In addition to this donation, the foundation is a member of the American Red Cross Annual Disaster Giving Program (ADGP). This $1 million annual investment helps the Red Cross preposition supplies before a disaster strikes and provide emergency response after a crisis occurs.
The Caterpillar Foundation’s commitment also extends to Red Cross International Services, helping offer hope and comfort to communities around the world. These vital funds support coordinating with the global Red Cross and Red Crescent network to prepare for and respond to emergencies wherever and whenever they occur. The global Red Cross network is on the ground supporting the Venezuela earthquake response.

DPA Auctions announced a strategic partnership with the Land Improvement Contractors of America (National LICA), the national trade association representing contractors in excavating, grading, drainage and land improvement across the United States.
The partnership makes DPA an official member benefit provider for LICA contractors nationwide and marks a major expansion of DPA’s construction equipment marketplace.
Through the program, LICA members receive complimentary equipment appraisals, reduced seller fees and access to a dedicated member portal for appraisals, listings and support. Equipment sells right from the contractor’s own yard — DPA handles the marketing, title work and payment processing, and the member collects the check without hauling a single machine to a sale site.
“National LICA is committed to delivering partnerships that provide meaningful value to our members and help them build stronger businesses,” said Dennis Mikula Jr., chief executive officer, National LICA. “DPA Auctions brings deep industry expertise, transparent equipment valuations and
a proven ability to help contractors maximize the value of their assets. We’re proud to partner with an organization that shares our commitment to integrity, exceptional service and advancing the land improvement industry.”
“Land improvement contractors turn equipment over constantly — a machine either earns its keep or it moves on,” said Justin Scheel, chief marketing officer of DPA Auctions. “Partnering with National LICA puts DPA in front of a nationwide community of contractors who live and breathe this equipment. For more than five decades we’ve helped equipment owners sell with confidence, and we’re proud to bring that same straightforward service to LICA members everywhere they work.”

Hitachi Global Air Power US LLC, an industry leader in compressed air solutions, on July 14, 2026, announced two of its team members have been named finalists in the construction and manufacturing sector for the Northwest Indiana Influential Women Association’s (NWIIWA) 2026 Influential Women Awards.
The Influential Women Awards celebrate the women, leaders, companies, and stories shaping Northwest Indiana. This is the 15th year NWIIWA has held these awards.
Jeanie Downs, director of environmental health and safety, is a finalist in the “Influential Woman” category. In a career spanning three decades, Downs has built and sustained a world-class safety program for Hitachi Global Air Power’s Michigan City headquarters, as well as for Hitachi Air Centers (sales and service locations) across the United States.
Nicole Pomeroy, manufacturing engineer, is a finalist in the “Up & Coming” category. Since joining the organization three years ago, Pomeroy has managed major projects to insource and upgrade manufacturing processes, helping increase Hitachi Global Air Power’s domestic production capabilities.
“Thank you to NWIIWA for recognizing Jeanie and Nicole’s dedication, expertise, and contributions to the regional manufacturing sector,” said Hideki Fujimoto,

We are proud to foster an environment where individuals can grow, lead, and make a meaningful impact. Congratulations to all the finalists on this well-deserved recognition.”
Downs and Pomeroy are two of 186 finalists selected from a group of more than 500 nominees. The winners in each category will be announced at the 2026 Influential Women Awards banquet on Sept. 24, 2026, in Merrillville, Ind.
