Dear Congressional Community,

W

ith a strong vision, mission, and core values to guide us along the way, Congressional School has continued to thrive and grow over the past year. Leveraging best practices and research-based techniques, we are proud of our rigorous and well-rounded educational program and the positive impact it is having on our students. We’ve continued to invest in our faculty—our most valuable asset—challenging them intellectually, fueling their passions, encouraging innovation, and equipping them to take teaching and learning to the highest levels. In fact, our faculty are increasingly sought after as leaders in their fields. They have been invited to present at national conferences and have written for leading academic publications. They’ve been featured in top regional magazines, led workshops and seminars, and taken their talents around the world to countries including India and China. They’ve been invited to share their expertise on accreditation teams and to evaluate curriculum at schools around the country. Our faculty are highly talented and dedicated to their craft, and we are very proud of the work that they do both in and out of the classrooms. We have also invested significantly in our infrastructure in ways that reflect our focus on innovation and this fall, unveiled our biggest capital investment in over 20 years. Our two new state-of-the-art Design Labs bring creativity, critical thinking, and innovation to the forefront of learning. Take a robust curriculum, mix it with a well-constructed space filled with tools, equipment, and supplies, add curious students and

expert faculty, and you have the recipe for unlimited innovation and learning. Our teachers and students are embracing these new spaces and the endless possibilities they offer. There have been many other campus improvements this year including safety and security enhancements, playground resurfacing, road repaving, HVAC upgrades, and much more, all of which help to build pride in our school and are visible demonstrations of our stability and growth. Our many achievements this year have been made possible with the help and financial support of the entire Congressional community and is a perfect demonstration of what we can accomplish together. Our theme for giving last year, and for the year ahead, is Run With The Colts. As you browse through the pages of our 2018-2019 Report of Giving, you will see the extent of support that has helped to ensure our success. Your generosity of time and resources is viewed as an expression of thanks for each child’s educational journey and the many ways in which our teachers impact the lives of young learners. On behalf of the faculty, staff, and students of Congressional School, I extend a heartfelt thank you. Sincerely,

Edwin P. Gordon, Ph.D. Head of School

"Congressional's teachers and staff are amazing and really care about the students. The environment fosters both academic challenge and social growth and having access to such a large, beautiful campus gives the opportunity for outdoor learning that is truly special. The community feels like a family and we are so happy to be a part of it! Most important‌. our son loves going to school and comes home happy and excited about his day, ready to share all that he has learned." - Jenafer Howard P '24

DESIGN LABS

Creativity and critical thinking are cornerstones in all subjects, not just the domain of science, math, and engineering. They happen best when students are able to employ their creativity, work in teams, learn to fail safely, be self-motivated, synthesize knowledge, and create new knowledge. A well-designed curriculum supported by a well-designed space can create and foster these opportunities for learning. Our Design Labs are the place where subject areas can collaborate to provide meaningful experiences for our students. We are excited to imagine the possibilities for all our students in the Design Labs.

Gala and Auction 2019 Our annual fundraising auction is one of our most popular community events. Through the generosity of businesses and individuals, we have been able to raise funds to support our programs and enrich the academic lives of our students. Funds raised at the Think Green Gala 2019 went to support sustainability and security initiatives across campus. Our 2019 Gala projects increased the efficiency of our 60-year old school buildings by allowing us to install energy and water efficient drinking fountains to reduce campus water use, and eco-friendly surfaces on our playgrounds to reduce the amount of run off and the quarterly replenishment of wood chips. We also focused on enhancing our security systems to ensure we continue to provide a safe learning environment for our young learners.
