Finding Real Value in Every Truss By the Paragon Team
C
omponent manufacturers are operating in a market with little room for waste. Housing demand is difficult to predict. Material prices shift quickly. Labor is expensive and difficult to find. Customers still expect competitive pricing, dependable schedules, and fast turnaround. Those pressures are outside a component manufacturer’s control. You cannot determine next quarter’s lumber prices or when a builder will release the next project. But every truss contains dozens of smaller decisions you can control. A different lumber grade, alternative web configuration, or slight adjustment to a connector plate’s angle can change a component’s cost. Each decision may seem small on one truss. Repeated across components and projects moving through a plant, those decisions can become meaningful. Designing a truss that passes code is only the first step. The real goal is finding the specific design that fits your shop’s purchasing strategy, design standards, and production flow.
Passing Is the Starting Point Structural analysis answers an essential question: Does this component satisfy the design requirements? Once the answer is yes, the component can move forward. In a busy design office, that is often where the search ends. Designers have deadlines, jobs waiting in the queue, and production teams depending on them. Manually testing every combination of lumber, webs, and plates is rarely practical. But a passing design is not necessarily the most economical design. There may be several valid ways to solve the same component. One solution may use a higher lumber grade with fewer webs. Another may use a lower grade with a different web configuration. One may require larger plates square to the joint, while another uses a different plate angle or position. All may satisfy the structural requirements without carrying the same material cost or production impact. Finding those alternatives requires more than checking whether a component passes. It requires exploring the decisions within it and understanding their tradeoffs.
Look Beyond Lumber Size Lumber size is often the first variable that comes to mind with truss optimization. But meaningful savings can be found elsewhere. Lumber Grades The highest available grade is not always necessary. Selecting a different grade can lower material cost while meeting the required performance. But changing one member can affect the rest of the truss. A lower grade may require another adjustment, so its value cannot be measured by looking at that board alone. The right answer also depends on purchasing and inventory. A less expensive grade provides little benefit if the shop does not stock it, cannot source it reliably, or must introduce another SKU for limited use. Continued next page
