here is a classic business parable about a man who ran a highly successful roadside hot dog stand. He was hard of hearing and had poor eyesight, so he never read the newspapers, listened to the radio, or watched the evening news. Instead, he focused entirely on what he did best: making excellent products, putting up bright signs, and enthusiastically selling to every passerby. His business boomed year after year because his focus remained entirely on his operational execution.
Eventually, his son returned home from a prestigious university with an advanced degree. Looking at his father’s bustling stand, the son warned, “Father, haven’t you heard the macroeconomic forecasts? A massive economic downturn is coming. Housing starts are going to stall, and you need to prepare for a severe drop in market demand.”
The father thought to himself, “My son goes to a great school and looks at all the market data. He must know better than I do.” Anxious about the future, the father decided to mitigate his risk. He drastically reduced his inventory orders, took down his bright road signs, stopped upgrading his setup, and ceased actively pursuing new prospects. He sat back and waited for the bad times to hit. Sure enough, within weeks, his sales plummeted. The stand went quiet. The father called his son and said, “You were absolutely right, son. We are in the middle of a terrible recession.”
