Remember to Remember the Good Parts
o many people are so anxious to say goodbye to 2020, it seems only fitting to stop a minute to say: “But, remember to remember the good things that happened this year.”
Like so many (too many) things in life, the good only comes alongside an ample serving of bad. We learn lessons “the hard way.” We figure out how to do things better “next time.” We aspire to make tomorrow better than today, especially when today has been disappointing.
Choose One to Remember Twelve months ago, I launched my year with “20 Words for 2020.” Those words represented things I hoped to witness, such as compassion, integrity, artistry, and grace. At the time, I readily admitted:
“Although a new year always brings us both possibilities and pitfalls, I prefer to focus on the positives as long as I can.” In keeping with that spirit, I encourage everyone to find (at least) one thing to remember from 2020 that can represent, for them, a good thing to remember. Although our year has been filled with sadness, heartbreak, frustration, and dismay, there have been bright spots. There have been unexpected discoveries of happiness and joy. They may not have been what we expected, hoped, or planned, but they exist. What is my one thing? That’s easy – it’s been having lunch with my sister every day since she began working from home in March. Because I’ve been working from home for more than 5 years, I am accustomed to very quiet days alone in an empty house. In contrast, the last 10 months have been filled with opportunities to ask, “oh, can I tell you this” and “hey, how’s it going.” When we return to our “normal” lives again, I’ll return to my quiet hours and fondly remember the days when the toughest question was, “what’s for lunch?”
