NEW HEADQUARTERS We officially moved to our new headquarters at 3421 Belmont Boulevard in Nashville, Tennessee. The Jane and Richard Eskind and Family Building serves as a hub for the work of the Community Foundation and as a convening and educational space for our nonprofit and community partners. Sustainability was at the forefront in creating the building, which features cross-laminated timber that stores carbon and reduces our footprint, bioretention areas for stormwater infiltration, public sidewalks to promote walkability, and many more features.

$7,193,234 Since its founding, the Wilson County Black History Committee has focused on its vision to share the heritage, arts, and culture of Black Americans who resided in Wilson County. One way the committee works toward this focus is by restoring Pickett Chapel, a sanctuary built in 1827 by enslaved individuals. In 2022, gifts through GivingMatters.com, alongside an additional CFMT grant, supported this important restoration project.

A family’s experience navigating their father’s Alzheimer’s journey led to the founding of Abe’s Garden as a community focused on brain health, wellness, and purposeful living. In 2022, many CFMT donors, motivated by a similar experience for parents and other loved ones, donated nearly $400,000 in financial contributions from their Donor Advised funds to support Abe’s Garden Community’s capital campaign.

Southern Word has applied its passion of helping youth develop their voice through spoken word in the Nashville area since 2008. Working with 7,500 students in 40 schools across 8 counties and helping identify Nashville’s Poet Laureate are among its impact on youth development noticed by donors each year. In 2022, there were a handful of grants from Donor Advised funds and the Community Foundation’s Discretionary Grant Program made to Southern Word, just as there have been nearly every year since the first grant to this organization was made in 2009.

Historically Black Colleges (HBCUs) are known throughout the United States for their deep-rooted traditions and legacies. For Princesse Hawkins, a health science major, and her brother Shelton Hawkins, a mechanical engineering major, attending Tennessee State University (TSU) is no different as it is part of a family affair. Both Princesse and Shelton’s parents and grandparents are TSU alums, so a continued education as legacy students at the beloved HBCU was always on their radar. However, the twins weren’t admitted on legacy alone. The Nashville natives worked hard for it, earning honor roll and principal’s list status in high school and GPAs worthy of being awarded the Community Foundation’s merit-based Teddy Wilburn Scholarship and the annual LadyAid Scholarship established by Grammy award-winning country music group Lady A.

Local Twins Excel at Tennessee State University The work ethic planted in them by their parents, that led to excellence in high school, catapulted them into success at the collegiate level, where they’ve grown their own roots and carved out legacies for themselves. Princesse worked two jobs by choice, was an active member of the Student Election Commission in student government, and a member of the Alpha Psi chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority all while maintaining a high enough GPA to graduate in the spring of 2023, Magna Cumm Laude. She plans to attend TSU for her doctorate in Physical Therapy in the fall. Shelton continues to build his legacy entering his final year at TSU. Affecting and informing his peers through the Student Election Commission pushes him out of his comfort zone and is his greatest source of accomplishment. Through it all, leaning into the HBCU and Nashville community that they are so deeply a part of is an experience the siblings don’t take for granted. The twins describe attending a local school as a way to stay grounded in family and friendship, and to recenter oneself. “To attend an HBCU is a blessing,” says Shelton. “You really are family with your peers in your classroom. Everyone has lent a helping hand in my four years here, and I feel I wouldn’t get that anywhere else.”

Slowing down long enough to take a moment to enjoy smothered and covered eggs while eating delicious waffles swimming in sticky syrup could be a moment that plants a seed for a lifetime. For music recording artist manager Gaines Sturdivant II, there haven’t been many moments sweeter than the one when his elementary-aged son, Gaines III, established a connection with Waffle House associates Terri and Dawn because of the warmth and friendliness they shared during regular visits to the local restaurant. Sure … it’s Nashville, a bustling city known for its hospitality, but this connection was something different. Terrie and Dawn’s genuine interest in their guests inspired the fatherson duo to pen a children’s story about individual acts of kindness and the ability to change the world.

Acts of Kindness Can Truly Change the World The book, A Waffle Can Change the World, can now be found at Waffle Houses nationwide, in bookstores and online. Net proceeds from the sale of the book help to grow the Sturdivants’ intergenerational fund of the same name at the Community Foundation. Through his daily work, Gaines II has helped several artists expand their roots into the community by establishing charitable funds at the Foundation. And it was these precious moments with his son at Waffle House that he was able to sprout the budding philanthropist in Gaines III, as well. Instilling the spirit of compassion and generosity at a young age is incredibly inspiring. It is this kind of sowing of seeds that leads to community members treating each other with love and kindness – just as Waffle House associates Terri and Dawn did with the Sturdivants.

In Nashville’s fast-paced, ever-changing landscape, the businesses, places, and people that are community staples can come and go in months. But for 100 Black Men of Middle Tennessee (100BMMTN ), 2022 marked more than three decades as an organization and saw the 25-year milestone of its endowment fund at the Community Foundation. An endowment fund is more than a way to provide for the preservation of the fund capital and annual stable cash flows for a nonprofit, it signifies an organization’s commitment to donors and its community to be a stalwart force for change in perpetuity. For the young Black men in Nashville, 100 Black Men and its 100 Kings, Collegiate 100, and College Kings programs are exactly that. 100BMMTN believes “... Student access and engagement with The 100 is essential to fulfilling our motto of “What They See Is What They’ll Be.”

25 Years of Broadening the Horizons of Local Black Youth In the past 25 years, the young men in the programs earned $100,000 in scholarships from 100BMMTN, which provided nearly $10,000,000 in academic enrichment, experiential learning, and leadership development training, all at no cost to the participants. The alumni from these programs continue to excel long after they exit graduating from schools all over the country like Tennessee State University, Full Sail University, University of Tennessee Knoxville, Middle Tennessee State University, and Morehouse College, securing jobs with companies such as Disney and Ford, as well as remaining local at Vanderbilt and Metropolitan Government of Nashville. “I think the coolest thing that we hear from our alumni is when they talk about the lifelong brotherhood that formed with other participants,” says Lee Mollette, current Board Chair at 100BMMTN. “When I hear stories from our alumni about how they benefited from the program and overcame various obstacles because of our members’ commitment, I often tear up.” Across 25 years, these milestones aren’t simply the organization’s accomplishments; they represent much more. Each one represents the life of a young man that was changed for the better, a future that was molded with caring hands. The near 200 young men currently enrolled in the programs are Nashville’s future educators, leaders and community. Nashville’s future is bright.

Being in the Technology field means seeing trends before they happen, creating opportunities, and having the expertise and savvy to carry out your plans. Since 1999, Women in Technology of Tennessee has done precisely that. By hosting education and networking events, outreach opportunities, and scholarship and internship programs, the organization has helped pioneer ways for women to galvanize the booming industry. The opportunities are plenty. Tech Giants such as Amazon, Asurion, and Oracle chose Nashville as the city to operate out of, and from 2019-2022, tech employment saw a 37% increase. In 2022, Nashville ranked 11th among the best cities for women in tech in a study by Smartasset.com. A year prior, Women in Technology of Tennessee recognized the potential for upward mobility for women in the industry. They created the WiTT Endowment Scholarship Fund to support women pursuing careers in technology and bring more gender diversity to the IT industry. With the support provided by the WiTT Endowment Scholarship Fund, intrepid young women can receive the education to take advantage of Nashville’s fantastic market offerings. Intrepid women like the inaugural recipient Kimberly Amaya Hernandez.

Women in Tech Scholarship Helping Students Create New Paths Kimberly is a Computer Science Major with an Entrepreneurship and Marketing Minor and a member of the Honors Program at the College of Sciences and Mathematics at Belmont University. As a first-generation college student, Kimberly knows what it takes to pioneer and succeed in unfamiliar spaces, making her the perfect first recipient of the WiTT Endowment Scholarship. Her advice to women who want to continue to make history and entrench themselves in the tech industry is to grab the bull by the horns and accept the challenge head-on. “Recognize your potential and continue trying to build, grow, and learn from yourself,” says Kimberly. “Challenge the stereotypes, be resilient, and use these instances to break down barriers. Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and take risks. The path to a career in technology may not be straightforward, but being determined, resilient, and passionate can take you a long way.”

PHILANTHROPY TAKES ROOT TO SPAN GENERATIONS

The legacy of the Turner Family’s multigenerational philanthropy can be traced back to Edward “Ajax” Turner, the figure behind a renowned family beverage distributorship established in 1961. His son, Jack B. Turner, a prominent businessman from Clarksville and a dedicated Board of Trustees member at Community Foundation (CFMT), took that legacy forward. “He never accepted an award like this,” Jack Turner said of his father in accepting the annual Joe C. Kraft Humanitarian Award from CFMT in 2016 “because most people in the state didn’t know him. He was always in the shadows. “But his clients knew him and appreciated him,” his son recalled. “And he taught us that what was important in life was to be nice to everybody and to be friends with everybody. … And we should always do our best in whatever we do because you never know who’s measuring you for a bigger task.”

The Legacy of Family Philanthropy Continues into the Next Generation That bigger task has resulted in a lifetime of community service for the gregarious Clarksville native and his extended family. A longtime insurance executive, Jack and wife Margie established the Jack and Margie Turner Advised Fund 30-plus years ago. That was not long after Community Foundation was established in 1991, thanks partly to a $50,000 gift from Jack Turner that put the organization over its original $1.5 million fundraising goal. Jack and Margie’s four children also established charitable funds. His grandchildren have begun setting up funds, as well. A proponent of Middle Tennessee regionalism, Jack fostered the creation of the Ajax Turner Senior Citizens Center, the Fort Campbell Historical Foundation, Leadership Clarksville, and Leadership Middle Tennessee, to name just a few of his many philanthropic passions. A key figure in the creation of Community Foundation and as a nationally recognized estate planner, he has helped scores of others find their own singular ability to make charitable gifts that matter to them and others. The spirit of philanthropy that took root in Ajax Turner now spans multiple generations, and his family learned the patriarch’s lessons well: Be nice. Do your best. Make friends. Give of yourself.

With her retirement coinciding with the Community Foundation’s transition to a new chapter, Vicki, a long-time friend of the organization, took the opportunity to sit down with CFMT’s new CEO, Hal Cato, at the Foundation’s recently-constructed headquarters.
