Welcome to Columbus Weddings tain guests while dancing was verboten (Page 22) to launching new endeavors in uncertain times (Page 24) to filling suddenly empty hours with networking and creative exercises (Page 42), Central Ohio wedding vendors have proven that they can roll with the punches. As vaccine rollout continues and life begins to resemble something close to normalcy, I hope the local wedding community and the world at large will take lessons learned in the last year with them into the future. At Columbus Weddings, we are doing that already. Case in point: For this year’s Best of Columbus Weddings photo shoot, we found a real-life couple to model and skipped on hiring wedding party models. The decision not only helped cut down on COVID transmission risk among models during the shoot; it also facilitated crazy-good chemistry between the pair pretending to be newlyweds. See for yourself, and explore the vendors that our readers named as their favorites, on Page 27. Here’s to the hope that this will be the last pandemic-centric issue we craft. I have always loved weddings. Having a large family meant that I started attending them at an early age, and in my life I’ve been in them as a flower girl, bridesmaid, maid of honor and bride. I’ve even officiated a small family wedding and photographed a few elopements. When some people groan at the thought of sitting through a ceremony and reception, I get giddy. I sometimes ask complete strangers about their venue and photographer after learning they’re engaged or recently married. Editing this magazine is more than a job; it’s a passion. It should be no surprise, then, that 2020 brought me a barrage of grief. Personal reaction to COVID-19 aside, I found my heart breaking over and over as I saw restrictions imposed, weddings postponed, businesses shuttered, guest lists slashed. I know from experience that planning a wedding can be incredibly stressful; planning one amid a global pandemic feels unfathomable. And yet, Central Ohio couples found a way to make it work. I’m in awe of their resilience and commitment to fostering a safe environment for their guests—even when that means forgoing desired traditions or replacing invitations with Zoom links. That spirit is evidenced throughout our Real Weddings section (Page 49), which features six couples who found a way to make it work, and in our story about a family that planned not one, but three weddings in the last year (Page 20). The vendor community has evolved and risen to the occasion, too. From finding ways to enter-

Dog Bless Us Fur the love of pet photos Make no mistake: The folks behind Columbus Weddings love dogs. Editor Emma Frankart Henterly and art director Alyse Pasternak are both obsessed with theirs (pit bull mixes named Cam and Daisy for Emma, a toy poodle named Luna for Alyse), and who can blame them? Dogs are humanity’s best friend, after all. Here are just a few couples who share our staff’s affinity for our furry friends and found ways to fit them into their wedding days.

CLOSINGS Classic Limousines of Columbus appears to have closed; the business’ website is down, its phone number disconnected, and its Facebook page hasn’t been updated since September. The company did not respond to a Facebook message about its status. In July, Tall Timbers Banquet & Conference Center closed its doors for good. The Reynoldsburg-area venue auctioned off much of its furnishings and equipment the same month, according to Columbus Business First.

Sangeeta Lakhani and Jen Marlatt, owners of The Table restaurant and micro-venue, announced via Facebook on Feb. 4 that they had officially handed over the keys for the Short North space. The Table was closed throughout the pandemic, and Lakhani and Marlatt listed it for sale in May 2020, according to Columbus Underground.

CHANGES Several venues have moved locations in the last six months or are planning to do so in the next six months: Clintonville’s Orchard Lane Flowers left its namesake street for 3378 Indianola Ave. in January (614-262-0880, orchardlaneflowers. com). The following month, Short North stationer On Paper moved just a few doors north to 743 N. High St. (614-424-6617, onpaper.com). Clintonville darling Flowers & Bread bid the neighborhood adieu in May, and Pattycake Bakery wasted no time in purchasing the space at 3870 N. High St. (614-784-2253, pattycakebakery.com). And finally, Italian specialty grocer and caterer Carfagna’s is moving this summer from the Northland area to 1440 Gemini Place in the Polaris area; the new space will be called Carfagna’s Famous Market & Ristorante, according to
a report from our sister publication The Columbus Dispatch (carfagnas.com). In February, bridesmaid and social occasion gown boutique Gilded Social expanded its offerings to include bridal. Gowns at the Downtown shop range in price from $600 to $5,000 and include such brands as Amsale, Rosa Clará, Blue Willow Bride and more. Owner Tanya Hartman notes that this expansion into bridal will not be made at the expense of her wedding party customers, and combined bridal/bridesmaid appointments will not be offered. “I am not interested in cannibalizing that experience for the bridesmaids, because they still deserve their appointment,” says Hartman. “We don’t want anybody to ever feel like they’re second fiddle.” 65 E. Local custom fragrance studio The Candle Lab announced via a blog post in February that it would be partnering with Indianapolis-based Penn & Beech Candle Co. According to the post, the “plan is to remodel and rebrand the three [Candle Lab] stores in the spring to improve the look and feel of the spaces and update the customer experience with new, thoughtful touches.” thecandlelab.com, pennandbeech.com The L.A. Catering Event Center has a new name: The Levee Event Center. The new moniker is a nod to the levees that were built in that spot in the early 1900s. The Levee’s parent company, LifeCare Alliance, has ties to that era; then called the Instructional District Nursing Association, the organization was in charge of flood relief efforts at that time. Proceeds from events at The Levee (and L.A. Gore and Gregory were sentenced in February and ordered to pay $3.3 million in back taxes, according to a press release from the U.S. District Attorney’s Office – Southern District of Ohio. Both women received jail sentences, and Gregory was ordered to pay a $20,000 fine. Gore’s sentence of six months, followed by 12 months of home confinement, is shorter than Gregory’s sentence of 36 months.

NEWS In August 2020, Irongate Equestrian Center owner Tera Gore and her mother, Theresa Gregory, pleaded guilty to five counts of tax fraud in a case centered around Gregory’s income through multilevel marketing companies. Gore was charged with helping her mother evade taxes on income earned through those companies in part by transferring assets, including Irongate Equestrian Center, into Gore’s name, though Gore stated in a May phone call with Columbus Weddings that the Hartford venue “was never involved with the tax stuff.”

Three Weddings and a Pandemic How one family safely managed three weddings in the midst of a global pandemic
“Two hours before, we were like, ‘We can’t board this flight.’ They were making New York sound like it had a fungus growing wild. … So we canceled our plans,” Leslie Chase recalls. “We thought, OK, we’ll board a plane next week, everything will be fine.” For the Chase family, that canceled flight in March 2020 marked the first in a series of wedding-related pivots. Over the last year, couples across the world have changed their dates, revamped guest lists and added hand sanitizer to goodie bags. But few can share the experience of watching the pandemic’s domino effect touch three sisters’ weddings in a 12-month span. So while experts began urging people to pick up stress-relieving hobbies last spring—puzzles, bird-watching, breadmaking—Chase family matriarch Leslie instead helped orchestrate and anchor weddings for her three daughters, Aliza, Ellie and Julie. That’s an unusually stressful 20
COLUMBUS WEDDINGS FALL/WINTER 2021
situation in a normal year, but never underestimate the resoluteness of a determined mother, even in a pandemic. “Being able to manage a pandemic and weddings and working,”—Leslie is a child, adolescent and adult psychiatrist at Hopewell Health Center in Athens—“she deserves a round of applause for that,” says the family’s wedding planner, Courtney Heibel of Rooted Together. At this point, Heibel says she teases Leslie that she has the experience and skill to switch professions entirely and work with her as a wedding planner. While the Chase sisters’ weddings will always be about each couple, it’s hard to understate the roles Leslie and Heibel played in ensuring each daughter could wax poetic about her day without focusing on the pandemic. Each daughter and her partner instead thrills in the memories of their experience, rather than bemoaning what could have been.

The Initial Shake Ups The flight that Leslie had to cancel would have transported Aliza’s engagement ring to her now-husband, Akiva Schick. And in the first of a series of thoughtful pivots, Akiva instead proposed to Aliza with a ring made of grass in a New York City park. While much of the country reflected on the anniversary of the official U.S. start of the pandemic in March, Aliza and Akiva have a happier memory. But soon after their engagement—and after Leslie and others realized their plans wouldn’t be pushed back by a mere week or two—a tougher decision was made in the Chase family. It was decided that Ellie’s wedding to Justin Hod, planned for May 2020, would be rescheduled to Aug. 16 at Cherry Valley Hotel. “That was probably the hardest part; the day passed that we were supposed to get married, and we weren’t married,” Ellie says. And when it came time for Julie to celebrate her own milestone in June, Leslie was prepared to overcome any obstacle. Determined to see her third daughter’s engagement after having to miss Akiva’s proposal to Aliza and postpone Ellie’s wedding, Leslie and husband Dan traveled to Houston. Not only did the parents make it to the engagement, but they also managed to keep it a secret from Julie. “After [the proposal], I heard my dad call my name and I got so confused, because I didn’t know,” Julie says. “They weren’t supposed to be in Texas.” Three Weddings Leslie and Heibel talk about planning the three sisters’ weddings as though a pandemic were any other snafu to overcome at a wedding, like anticipating inclement weather or guests with dietary restrictions. In fact, some of the non-COVID bumps in the road became rather comical in comparison to the health precautions they knew they needed to take. In some ways, the gaffes that did occur pushed the unsettling reality of the pandemic even further to the background. For example, rather than sending Ellie’s ketubah—a Jewish marriage contract—the printer instead delivered a poster for a hiphop artist. And six weeks before Aliza’s wedding on Oct. 25, the family switched venues to Bryn Du Mansion in Granville after the owner of their original location pleaded guilty for tax evasion. (Read more about that in “New & Noteworthy,” Page 17.) “We actually didn’t see our wedding venue until the Friday before the wedding,” Aliza says, a lilt in her voice where others
would display stress. “My parents had to pick it out. It ended up being beautiful and absolutely perfect.” By early 2021, Ellie, Aliza and their spouses were speaking adoringly about their weddings—and Julie and fiancé Yari Garner with excited anticipation about their nuptials on May 30 at Hilton Columbus Downtown—and largely only mention the pandemic in terms of how intimately aware they were of how their friends and family chose to celebrate them. Each couple had to cut hundreds from their original guest lists, and even some of those who were included in the final headcounts had to decline or take extra precautions because of their attendance. Both couples who wed in 2020 live out of state, and some of their guests had to miss the event or quarantine afterward because Ohio landed on other states’ high-risk travel lists. But those who did attend could be certain that a great many precautions were made to keep them safe. Both weddings featured signs that clearly stated safety measures, and guests only sat at tables with people in their quarantine bubbles. Everyone had to wear a mask, unless they were eating or drinking, and markings on the floor helped
to indicate appropriate distancing. Food was plated and covered before serving, and dessert was packed up in to-go containers. This wasn’t to say the weddings were all rules and no fun. “We have some Jewish dancing we do where you get around in the circle, the woman and the man, and you hold hands and dance,” Leslie says. “We weren’t sure how we were going to do that, so we went to Lowe’s and we bought a rope that was 100 feet, and we tied a knot every 11 feet so that people can hold a knot and be socially distanced from one another and dance and still have some of the traditions.” Nothing was left to chance, not with Leslie and Heibel at the helm, and each wedding received unique treatment for the couple and the situation at hand. The families contend the engagements and weddings were just as special as if they’d happened in any other year—perhaps even more so, bringing joy to in-person and virtual attendees in an otherwise challenging year. “I wasn’t really focused on what could have been,” Ellie says. “How can we make this still feel special? And that’s how we were all thinking, which is why it worked so well. How can we make this not feel different. We want it to still feel like a special day.” «

Reception Reinvention Putting a spin on wedding receptions with entertainment ideas outside of the traditional two-step
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, 2020 was the year that took something—if not many things—from everyone. In the case of weddings, from November 2020 to February 2021, it stole the headlining act of any reception: dancing. “We [were not] able to have people up and moving around; guests had to remain seated the entire time,” reflects Berlyn Martin, owner and lead planner of Berlyn Events. “A large majority of the events were postponed or canceled due to the regulation, because it’s difficult to completely realign your expectations of what a wedding is.” The couples who didn’t shy away from a 2020 wedding were forced to reinvent their reception with alternative entertainment ideas for guests. Performances, seated trivia, live art—the possibilities were infinite. But although dancing has returned seemingly for good, we need not merely go back to the way things were before. In fact, for many, receptions are being reinvented. 22

“We did things like trivia … [and] the Shoe Game,” Martin says of the dance-free weddings she helped plan. “They were engaging, and it was just a lot of fun for everyone.” These seated games can be a great option for couples looking for a fun but low-cost add-on to their reception. For trivia, couples can either tap into a Wednesday-night tavern vibe with general trivia or make it a game of who knows the happy couple better. Along similar lines, the Shoe Game is also a triedand-true reception favorite. To play, the couple sits back-to-back, takes off their shoes and swaps one (so that each person has one of their own shoes and one of their partner’s). Then the emcee—a DJ, someone from the bridal party or any of the guests—poses questions to the couple, such as, “Who’s the better driver?” Both partners then raise the shoe of the person they think fits the bill. The results—and reactions—are often amusing.

“Things like that really kept people engaged and allowed them to be a part of the moment,” Martin says. Being a part of the moment can also be an activity in its own right. Live event painting, where an artist renders a moment from the day onto canvas in real time, can be a memory-maker in the moment and for decades to come. For artist Keith Hasenbalg—of Best of Columbus Weddings winner Studio Von (see Page 27)—the live portion of the painting averages about five hours, providing plenty of entertainment for guests to watch the blank canvas bloom. But in truth, the piece won’t be finished for many weeks. “[After the wedding,] I take it back to the studio to do the fine details. The little things … they’re really making everything,” he says. “I want to make the whole thing a believable story.” Hasenbalg traditionally does three size options—ranging from 11-by-14 to 30-by24 inches—but also offers more budgetfriendly options like smaller canvases or paintings made only from picture references, rather than live scenes. “I’ve tried to make it so that everybody is able to have an actual piece of art,” he explains.
Along similar lines, for entertainment that can double as a guest favor, consider caricature drawings or open-air photo booths. Caricaturist John Bailey, who’s been in the business for around 25 years, says clients will write him notes years later, reflecting on the joy his drawings brought them. “One day I opened my email and there’s an email from someone,” he recalls. “[It said,] ‘Every day I sit in my office and I look at this caricature you drew of me and my family, and it fills me with happiness.’ ” Caricaturists like Bailey traditionally book by the hour, sketching throughout the dinner or post-dinner portion of a reception. Guests can sit at a safe distance, individually or in pairs or household pods, while they’re captured in a caricature artist’s signature, silly style. As for the modern-day portrait artist— aka photo booths—the instant Insta material is a surefire draw. Most photo booths, like the ones you can rent from The Foto Bar or Selfie Spot 614 (another Best of Columbus Weddings winner), offer instant physical or digital photos for guests, as well as a gallery of all of the event’s photos delivered after the fact. Some also offer GIF or Boomerang creation, too—perfect for posting to social

media. And while most companies offer options for decoration add-ons, the photo station itself offers an enticing combination of high-quality lighting and effects in a sleek and space-efficient form. For the safest bet, opt for an open-air booth for now—though the more traditional closed booths have remained popular for years before the pandemic and are sure to make a strong return as vaccination rates rise and safety concerns fall. More interesting reception ideas include live performances—there’s the traditional band, but also consider a more formal musical arrangement or even stand-up comedy—or lawn games like cornhole for outdoor, warm-weather weddings. For the couple who wants to create an experience as unique as they are, other options abound: a board game corner for the competitive couple, a magic act to commemorate a first date or perhaps a photo bingo board or scavenger hunt to encourage guests to capture the night’s many memories. But whether it’s a raucous trivia session or a fridge-ready photo strip, reimagining what a reception can look like will surely give your guests memories they can cherish long after the DJ shuts down the dance floor. «

Room to Grow Local businesses find a way to launch in 2020, despite the turmoil of the COVID-19 pandemic.
It was three months into the coronavirus pandemic, and things were not looking good for the wedding of Steven and Chloe Starkey. The Marion couple had resolved to keep their date of July 18, but in May, they received word that their chosen venue—the North Bank Pavilion—would not be open in time. They got their money back, but they were suddenly without a venue. “We called and toured several places,” says Chloe, who, with her husband-to-be, checked out spots in the Short North and German Village. Nothing felt quite right. Then Steven got in touch with a friend who had purchased a 180-acre property that had, in a former life, been home to a summer camp in 24

the village of Marengo, about 35 miles northeast of Downtown Columbus. “We just liked that it was outdoors, that it was open, that there were a lot of different areas on the property that we could host people at to make it feel like it was this little destination wedding,” says Chloe, who spruced up the space ahead of her nuptials. “We came out here and just started doing a lot of yard work,” she adds. After serving as “guinea pigs” for repurposing the former Camp Marengo as a wedding venue, the Starkeys saw an opportunity to share the spot with other couples-to-be. Within a few months, Steven and Chloe had worked out a deal with their friend to become co-owners of what is now called The Brook, a site that the couple touts not

just for its scenic splendor but for its ample on-site lodging. “We had all of our close friends and family stay on-site, and we never had to leave all weekend,” Steven says of their wedding. “There’s a lot of really cool, pretty event venues in [Central Ohio], but the major issue—and we found this to be a problem when we were looking for our own venue— [is] there’s nowhere to stay.” That’s not a problem, though, at The Brook, which can easily put up out-oftown guests in cabin-, hotel- and hostel-style options. Accommodations include the Buckeye Bungalow, Maple Manor and Sycamore Shack (also known as the “Love Shack”). The Starkeys—who hosted their first wedding at The Brook on Labor Day and have more than a dozen already confirmed for 2021—are among a number of Central Ohio entrepreneurs who have launched weddingrelated businesses during the pandemic. It may be an unlikely time to start a new venture, but the Starkeys are going all in, investing in new bathrooms, turning a former campers’ dining hall into a gathering hall and creating a bridal suite and a groom’s lounge. “We wanted people to come out here and have the ability to relax and enjoy themselves and let loose,” says Steven, who defines The Brook’s aesthetic as “adventurous-modern.” Personal experience also informed the decision of Whitehall resident Kenyutta Echols to form her own event planning and styling business, It’s So Beautiful, last year. “I planned my own wedding from A to Z, down to baking the cupcakes and doing the table decorations,” says Echols, who married her husband, Sherrick, in July. “The bridesmaids’ clothes, shoes, everything.” In that time, Echols found that she had a knack for the process but also that she wished she had been able to hire someone to help—someone like, well, herself. “I wish I could have had somebody do this for me, if I would have known what a wedding planner really does,” she says. Having identified a need from her own wedding-planning journey, a new business owner was born. Echols, who became certified in event planning, launched It’s So Beautiful in August. Despite having a strong enough sense of her own tastes to plan her wedding as well as other family events, potential brides and grooms shouldn’t worry that Echols will impose her style on them. “I really listen and pay attention to what they want,” says Echols, who also plans

birthdays, baby and bridal showers and other events. Although Echols says that business so far has been slow during the pandemic, she remains undeterred. “I’m going to stay positive and keep going,” she says. Bullish on the wedding industry going forward is the quartet of Ohio State University graduates who formed an eventplanning business, roop, last December, launching its website in March. “A lot of people were postponing their weddings or other big events, so we knew that there would be a big market for this business, especially when people are trying to cram everything in to the first available time they can,” says Sanjana Naidu, who founded roop with Akil Gore, Arsh Bajwa and Siddartha Revur. The four, who met at Ohio State, took pride in planning elaborate events at schools. “I have always been a very extracurricular-inclined person,” Naidu says. “That was one of the big things that drew me to Ohio State—just seeing the vast amount of organizations that existed and the level of execution that OSU did at these events.” After graduating in 2018, some among the four scattered, but all found themselves in Central Ohio again during the pandemic. It was then that they decided to form roop, which takes its name from a Hindi word. “It’s essentially saying you are looking upon something that holds so much beauty,” Naidu says. “We decided, right now, there’s nothing stopping us. If anything, we have more of an opportunity.” The company offers end-to-end planning. “We want to make sure that from preliminary planning stages to the day and moment of execution, we are there with you,” says Naidu, who points to small, easy-to-forget details that the right event planner will not overlook. “There’s a lot of things that people don’t really think of,” she adds. Naidu also points to the importance of following pandemic-era guidelines while achieving a client’s vision. At the same time, roop’s services are offered à la carte, with clients able to pick and choose what they need for their wedding. Three weddings have been booked since the company launched, but its co-founder is not getting cynical. “It’s such a romantic business,” Naidu says. “Seeing the bride and groom’s look on their faces, and seeing the families’ look on their faces when you have two families becoming one—I just think it’s something that’s so beautiful.” «

Starling Studio (9.5%) Kismet Visuals (9%) In 2008, Allison Leonard’s husband bought her a camera. Employed full-time as a graphic designer, she began photographing her children, friends’ children, and eventually was asked to shoot a friend’s wedding in 2010. Five years later, she left her job to focus on Kismet Visuals. “I am very lucky to capture joyful moments ... [that] will forever be remembered [in] a photograph,” says Leonard. The secondyear winner this year tied for best photographer with Tessa Berg of Starling Studio, who came to the wedding business through photojournalism. That experience prepared her for the demanding nature of weddings, she says. Now a decade into her wedding photography career, it comes as no surprise that what she loves most about her work is … love. “I celebrate all identities and love stories,” Berg says. For the second year running, PENZONE Salons + Spas tops the ballot in the wedding-day makeup category. This year, however, the Central Ohio chain is joined by former runner-up 614 Beauty, run by 20-year veteran makeup artist Delcina Brown and staffed by 15 independent contractors. “What truly makes me happy is seeing the joy on [clients’] faces when they look in the mirror,” Brown says. W Nail Bar (21.1%) Ohio natives and sisters Lauren Hunter and Manda Mason were raised in a family-owned business, so they always knew they wanted to open a business one day. When wedding receptions faced massive restrictions in 2020 to help curb the spread of COVID-19, many vendors found themselves with an unexpected glut of free time. But instead of relaxing, the folks at B3 Event, an event design and planning company that specializes in Indian and Southeast Asian weddings, staged a series of elaborate photo shoots featuring local vendors at the company’s North Side warehouse. The first focused on the sangeet, a celebratory precursor to many Indian weddings. Brittany Razek & Angel Pratt BY VIRGINIA BROWN | PHOTOS BY AMY ANN PHOTOGRAPHY Brittany Razek and Angel Pratt wouldn’t let anything ruin their big day. The couple had been through too much to let the COVID-19 pandemic derail their nuptials. “We were together for a long time and faced a lot of adversity together,” says Razek. After waiting for samesex marriage to be legalized, they needed to find a welcoming church. Razek and Pratt met through mutual friends while studying at Ohio State University. Razek, now 31, was a senior, studying criminology and criminal justice and sociology, and Pratt, 32, was in her first year of graduate school in social work. “The minute we started spending time together, there was just something I couldn’t get enough of; it was just a feeling,” says Razek. “We knew early on that we were meant for each other, but we wanted to make sure we were in a good place with careers before making that step.” Pratt proposed to Razek in August 2019, seven years into the courtship. To choose the wedding date, they got creative. Razek wanted a fall wedding. Pratt’s birthday is Nov. 1 and Razek’s is Nov. 14, so they met in the middle: Nov. 7. 50

Pandemic restrictions made planning difficult, but they harnessed their wedding-day motto, “love always wins,” and made it work. The ceremony took place at St. John’s United Church of Christ, which the couple joined in 2017. “It was very important to us to get married in a church,” says Pratt. “We both grew up with faith but felt rejected or ostracized for a long time,” Razek adds. “St. John’s really embraced us.” With social distancing restrictions in effect, they whittled their list of roughly 300 guests to 85; a more intimate group of 30 attended the ceremony. Guests wore masks, and hand sanitizer stations dotted the event space. The couple had fun with that, too, putting up signs that read, “Distance is temporary; love is forever.” Custom masks read, “Spread love, not germs.” They also shared their event online through Facebook Live and Zoom. Despite the challenges, the day was full of joy. One standout moment came when Razek, unsure about how to cut the cake, smashed a rainbow-filled slice onto Pratt’s face. “We promised each other that we weren’t going to smear cake in our faces, and then she got me,” says Pratt. “That’s one of our favorite moments because it was just fun,” says Razek. “I couldn’t stop laughing.” «

Their story begins providentially: The couple met at a Downtown bar on Independence Day in 2016, and, about a year later, they were engaged. “We planned a trip to the Azores,” says Michael, who settled on the site of an active volcano to spring the big question. “I know it’s kind of early, a little rushed,” he said to Chayna, but, “We’re probably never going to come back to this mountain to hike it again.” Says Chayna: “It completely shocked and surprised me.” The proposal, however, turned out to be the easy part. The couple set a date to marry in August 2019 at Jorgensen Farms in Westerville. “But we found out we were expecting in January of that year, and then our son was born in October,” says Chayna, who decided to change the date and switch venues. (She is currently expecting their second child.) Eventually, the couple selected Magnolia Hill Farm in Centerburg. “It was just a nice, simple, open floor plan,” Michael says. The couple wanted a clean, modern aesthetic and color palette for the ceremony. A new date was chosen, a new venue was picked—and then the pandemic hit. Immediately, the couple’s guest list had to be pared down. “We had a big engagement party, and there were probably 50 to 75 people,” says Chayna, who planned to invite close to 200 guests to Jorgensen Farms but ended up hosting just 45 at Magnolia Hill Farm. (Those who couldn’t attend watched a livestream on Zoom.) When the wedding finally took place last October—more than a year after the original date—numerous rules had to be followed, including mask-wearing and prohibitions against dancing and congregating. Party favors were stuffed with pandemic-specific items, including masks and hand sanitizer in glass vials. “They had our names and wedding date on them,” Chayna says. Yet the reasons to celebrate outweighed the restrictions: A smaller guest list meant that there was more money available to devote to details, including elaborate flower arrangements from Evergreen Flower Co. Chayna’s father, who had been diagnosed with stage 4 cancer six months before the ceremony, was able to attend. “He beat it,” she says. “It’s been almost a year since he was diagnosed.” Plus, the couple was glad to get hitched—finally, more than a year after their original date. « FALL/WINTER 2021 COLUMBUS WEDDINGS

Andreina Vincentelli & Dante Romano BY DANA RANDALL | PHOTOS BY DERK’S WORKS PHOTOGRAPHY Andreina Vincentelli and Dante Romano originally met through work, not knowing that in almost exactly five years, they’d be getting married. “In 2015, we met through work at a Halloween party for the retail design agency we both were working with,” recalls Dante. Today, the two are co-partners at their own design firm, Rowe Creative Union, which they started in 2016 in German Village, where they also lived in a townhouse. Dante is the firm’s creative director, and Andreina is its experience director. Last year, their partnership—and their connection to German Village—deepened when they purchased a home in the neighborhood and tied the knot there in October. “We are so devoted to the community and German Village that nothing would have excited us about doing it in another venue,” Andreina says. But the couple also values world travel and their connections to their respective heritages: Andreina is from Venezuela, and Dante’s family is from Italy, where he proposed in the summer of 2019. “He proposed quietly during a dinner in Venice, without a ring,” Andreina says. “His intent was for us to pick
out a ring together at our next destination: Florence.” The low-key energy of the proposal served as a perfect jumping-off point for planning their wedding. “We wanted it to feel [like] when we got engaged,” says Andreina. “We wanted to feel cozy and very familycentric, and along that same line, we wanted to connect to our roots. ... We tried to incorporate our backgrounds, a joint cultural heritage theme.” Finding their current home in July 2020 was the last piece of the puzzle for their intimate wedding plans. “We walked into this house, fell in love with the house, but really pictured the wedding being able to come to life [there],” Dante says. “That really sealed the deal for us to have a wedding at home.” While they always knew they wanted an intimate wedding, the COVID-19 pandemic meant their decision was even more practical. To include loved ones who couldn’t travel, the pair livestreamed their ceremony and part of the reception. Andreina and Dante followed the ceremony in style with a quick victory lap. “It was on the verge of being too cold, but we decided to take a ‘just married’ spin around the neighborhood on our Vespa—a perfect end to the ceremony,” says Andreina. « FALL/WINTER 2021 COLUMBUS WEDDINGS

Erika Teets-Johnson & Daniel Johnson BY REBECCA WALTERS | PHOTOS BY LINDZY LEE PHOTOGRAPHY Erika Teets-Johnson and Daniel Johnson’s love story started in 2006, when she was a freshman and he was a senior at Olentangy High School. They locked eyes one day passing in the hall between classes. Erika remembers anticipating that time of day—just before sixth period class—just to catch another glimpse of him. It wasn’t long before Daniel messaged her via MySpace. Except for a year when Daniel went out of state for college, the high school sweethearts have been inseparable. He proposed in 2019 while vacationing in Paris, France. The plan was to ask her midair while flying in a hot air balloon. “She made several not-so-subtle hints on how she wanted me to propose,” Daniel says. However, windy conditions grounded trips that day, so he asked her in front of the Louvre. “I wasn’t going to leave Paris without proposing,” he says. The two celebrated their love with a forest fairytale wedding on Aug. 29, 2020. About 90 people attended the outdoor—and COVID-conscious—ceremony and reception at Orchard House Boutique Inn in Granville. With the pandemic in full swing, they wanted friends and family to feel as safe as possible. It was Erika’s dad’s idea to distribute glowstick wristbands to guests in green, yellow 56

and red, signifying their comfort level in socializing. Everyone was encouraged to wear masks, tables were spaced 6 feet apart and there was an abundance of hand sanitizer and Clorox wipes. “City Barbeque did an amazing job of making dinner service safe and enjoyable,” Erika says. As for traditional parent/child dances, the couple let family members choose songs, although Erika vetoed her dad’s “Ohio State Fight Song” selection in favor of the more traditional “My Wish” by Rascal Flatts. She also had a special dance with her grandfather, who died several months later, at age 89. “I am so grateful to have these memories with him at our wedding,” she says. In addition to one of the groomsmen who entertained guests as the “flower man”—blowing petals from his hands and twirling down the aisle—Erika and Daniel say their most special moment came at the end of the night. “The beautiful forest was illuminated by lights strung across either aisle of trees. It was so magical,” Erika says. “We relaxed and soaked in the moment with close friends and family. It was just surreal.” While the two have yet to go up in a hot air balloon, they recently traveled to Jamaica for a much-deserved and long-overdue honeymoon. «

They share a love of national parks, hiking and the outdoors. But planning a wedding in 2020 was a very different kind of adventure, and one that happened a little closer to home. After a carefully orchestrated proposal in early March—Ian convinced India’s boss to ask her to travel from her home in Pittsburgh to Columbus for an assignment, and Ian surprised her in Schiller Park with a ring—India came back to Columbus for a visit just as Ohio was shutting down to quell the spread of COVID-19. She decided to stay in Columbus and work remotely, but the arrangement was far from idyllic. “You have this picture of what engagement is going to be like—you know, wedding dress shopping, getting brunch and all these things,” India says. “And then you’re not only engaged and living with your fiancé’s parents, but there’s a pandemic and everyone’s scared to leave their homes.” Getting out of Ian’s parents’ basement and into a home together motivated the couple to push their outdoor wedding up from summer 2021 to November 2020. Luckily, they ended up with an unusually balmy 70-degree day. To keep the head count low, they trimmed the guest list from 350 to a modest 75 and tapped friends and family to help with details like the worship service and reception music. “It was special, though, because everyone got to be a part of the wedding in a special way,” Ian says. Those who couldn’t attend in-person tuned in via livestream. Although much of the ceremony had to be toned down, the couple made sure not to compromise on the moments that mattered. They were happy to have a first look before the ceremony, and, as devout Christians, both cite their foot-washing ceremony as one of their favorite wedding-day moments. “I think that moment was really humbling and grounding for both of us,” India says. “Because you get swept up in the wedding details and COVID and all the things you have to think about, but just being there and saying, ‘OK, every day for the rest of our lives, we want to serve each other’—that was just something really unique and special for us.” « FALL/WINTER 2021 COLUMBUS WEDDINGS

Natalie & Frank Monago BY PETER TONGUETTE PHOTOS BY ROBB MCCORMICK PHOTOGRAPHY As a child of the 1980s, Natalie (Robinson) Monago still finds herself listening to the music of the decade from time to time. Inevitably, her memories turn to her boyfriend from high school and college (and now her husband), Frank Monago. “It does take me back to when I was hoping we would get married one day,” says Natalie, who, like her husband, is in her 50s. “Then I’m sitting in my car, kind of smiling, because it happened—it just happened 30 years later.” The years in between could fill volumes. The Northeast Ohio natives met in high school, at a party in 1986. Neither remembers who hosted the party or what brought them to it, but they remember each other. After graduation, the pair dated long distance before eventually splitting up and marrying other people— though they checked in on each other periodically. In the mid-2010s, Natalie, living in Columbus, reached out to Frank’s sister to get in touch again. “As I lost my mother and my brother, it got to the point where [I realized] life is very short and everybody is in charge of their own happiness,” says Natalie, who rekindled her friendship with Frank via phone; they eventually met in-person for the first time in decades. “We knew we had to get married,” Natalie says. By then divorced from their spouses, the couple got engaged on Christmas Day 2019 and had plans to get married the following December in New York City. When the pandemic hit, they contemplated alternatives before deciding on a site closer to home. They selected the Granville Inn, with a guest list that numbered just 12. “Nobody from a different household could be at the table [together],” Natalie says, referring to pandemic-related restrictions then in place. Yet the evening had its own magic. A string duo played, and Frank’s sister baked the cake. Not able to dance inside the inn, the couple and photographer Robb McCormick headed outside. Frank had cued up Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark’s “So In Love,” a meaningful song from their first go as a couple, on his phone. “It was dark and it was cold,” Natalie says. “We were under the lights out there, and it was just really for the two of us.” The pandemic wasn’t going to stand in the way of the Monagos’ wedding plans. After all, for a couple to marry more than 30 years after meeting takes a certain kind of fortitude. “We’re not in our 20s,” Frank says. “Once we got reconnected, it was like, ‘Why wait?’” « 60

happily ever after WEDDING BY THE WATER Rather than host a large gathering, Westerville residents Carla and Tom Kowski eloped on the banks of the Scioto River on Oct. 8, 2020. Musicians opened their intimate ceremony with a cover of Taylor Swift’s “Lover”—the song Carla had intended to walk down the aisle to. Everything about the day was amazing, Carla says, from the unseasonable 70-degree temperature to the onlookers watching from a nearby bridge. She describes the ceremony as incredibly intimate, which allowed her and Tom to focus on one another.
