Holiday Season Returns with Lights, Parade and Community Traditions

14 RECREATION CONNECTION • FALL • 2026

The holiday season shines brighter in College Station as Christmas in the Park returns to Stephen C. Beachy Central Park. What began in 1984, when a local family funded a small display of light panels, has grown into one of the Brazos Valley’s most popular holiday traditions. Today, more than one million lights fill the 47-acre park, transforming it into a seasonal destination for families across the region. Behind the scenes, crews work yearround to prepare the illuminated displays. Hundreds of panels are assembled and maintained to preserve the familiar scenes many residents return to each year. From glowing light displays to the College Station Christmas Parade, the season leads you to Beachy Central Park.

Lights On Returns Nov. 26–Jan. 1 Christmas in the Park opens with Lights On, running daily from 6–11 p.m. Nov. 26–Jan. 1. Drive or walk through more than one million lights throughout Beachy Central Park. Tune in to Willy 97.7 FM for holiday music provided by Bryan Broadcasting. Children can send letters to Santa using the North Pole mailbox outside the Parks and Recreation Administrative Office. Letters will be accepted Nov. 26–Dec. 24. Admission is free, and parking is available in Beachy Central Park. The park will be closed to vehicles on Dec. 5 as preparations are made for the Christmas in the Park event.

The parade ends at Beachy Central Park for the start of Christmas in the Park.

Christmas in the Park Event Dec. 5 | 6-10 p.m. Festivities continue 6–10 p.m. with the Christmas in the Park event, which begins when the mayor flips the switch to illuminate the park’s lights. Admission is free. Enjoy hayrides, cookies, hot cocoa, live entertainment, photos with Santa, and more. Wristbands are required for activities and are available at information booths after completing a waiver form. Food vendors will also be on site. Two Easy but Meaningful Ways You Can Get Involved to Protect Migrating Birds

Birds move through Texas each fall along the Central Flyway, but artificial light and reflective glass can put them at risk during migration. Each fall, more than 300 native bird species pass through College Station as they travel to Central and South America. Many of these birds are newly hatched and making their first migration, a journey that is especially dangerous. More than 70 percent do not survive their first year due to natural and human-related hazards.

26 RECREATION CONNECTION • FALL • 2026

LIGHTS OUT TEXAS

Most North American bird species migrate through Texas, and many travel at night using natural cues to navigate. Bright artificial lighting and illuminated windows can disrupt these cues, drawing birds off course and increasing the risk of collisions with buildings. According to Lights Out Texas, more than one billion birds die each year from building collisions. Birds also support ecosystems by pollinating plants, controlling insect populations, and dispersing seeds. These roles benefit agricultural productivity, natural landscapes, and ecotourism across the region. You can help reduce risks during fall migration by turning off non-essential lighting from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. during the fall migration (Aug. 15–Nov. 30). During spring migration (March 1–June 15), following the same practice helps protect birds traveling north. Even small reductions in nighttime lighting can help keep migrating birds on safer paths.

Windows for Birds

Glass is a major threat during migration because most birds cannot recognize it as a barrier. Reflections of trees and sky can appear like open habitat, especially during daylight hours, leading birds to collide with windows as they navigate or escape predators. In the Brazos Valley, the ruby-throated hummingbird is especially vulnerable due to its small size and fast flight, which makes collisions more likely and often fatal. Simple changes can help reduce these risks. Window decals, stickers, and other visible patterns can break up reflections and make glass more visible, helping protect migrating birds throughout the fall season. Protecting migrating birds during migrations starts with simple actions at night and at the window.

PLANT FOR POLLINATORS:

Support Monarch Butterflies Monarch butterflies rely on healthy habitats across North America, and simple actions at home can help support their long migration between Canada and central Mexico. As part of the Mayors’ Monarch Pledge, the Parks and Recreation Department is committed to helping protect monarch butterflies and restoring habitat across the community. Monarchs migrate thousands of miles each year between Canada, the United States, and central Mexico. In the fall, they travel south to overwinter in the forests of Mexico, while spring migration brings new generations back north to lay eggs on milkweed. Each stage of their life cycle depends on healthy habitat along the way. Monarch populations have declined significantly in recent decades due to habitat loss, including reduced milkweed availability, urban development, mowing practices, and pesticide use. Because monarch caterpillars can only feed on milkweed, the loss of this plant directly threatens their survival. You can help support monarchs by planting native pollinator gardens and native milkweed in your yard. Fall is the best time to plant native seeds in Texas, with ideal planting dates from mid-October to mid-December, allowing plants to establish before spring growth begins. Free native seeds are available at the Gary Halter Nature Center, which is open daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Stop by and grab a packet to help restore monarch habitat in our community. These seeds are grown in gardens at Lick Creek Park, where staff and volunteers collect, dry, and package seeds from locally adapted native plants. Please plant all seeds you take. You can also help by avoiding non-native plants, which often provide little benefit to wildlife and can sometimes harm native ecosystems. Native milkweed and nectar-producing plants are especially important for supporting monarch reproduction and migration.
