Rupp Marine Halyard Line Retainer Excess rigging line can be a mess, and cleats have a tendency to get in the way when not in use. Rupp Marine has come up with a simple yet ingenious way to solve these problems. Their all-new, patent-pending “clamp-on” Halyard Line Retainer is an easy way to store halyard lines while telescoping outriggers are rigged and in the retracted position. Simply clamp a set of these line cleats onto the outrigger pole at the desired distance. Excess rigging line wraps around the pop-up cleats to keep lines neat and orderly. This one-of-a-kind system allows the cleats to be folded out of the way when not in use. Rupp’s Halyard Line Retainer system fits any 1 ½-inch diameter outrigger poles. Sold as a set of four to equip two outrigger poles, they are rugged and durable, with spring-loaded cleats for positive locking and unlocking.

MHX Push Pole The MHX Push Pole is a game changer for shallow-water anglers. Utilizing a combination of uni-directional and off-axis carbon fibers, MHX has created a push pole that produces the greatest amount of power in each push, while maintaining excellent hoop strength under load. There’s no wasted energy, and it’s feather light for long days on the water. When you’re sneaking up on a single shoreline tailer or positioning the boat for a shot at schooling fish, you’ll appreciate the benefits that state-of-the-art technology brings to this simple tool. The MHX push pole has been widely recognized as the best option on the market due it’s lightweight mobility, incredible durability, and superior value. At just under five pounds, you’ll be able to push all week long without the residual fatigue. Legendary Florida angler, Capt. Keiland Smith said, “In all my years of guiding, I would have to say that I have never found a push pole to be this good. The weight of this pole and the strength of it are amazing… I would have to say I think this the best push pole ever made.” The MHX Push Pole includes a fork, a tip, and a 316 stainless steel replacement point just in case.

Parkit360 Electric Trailer Dolly

SeaSucker Push Pole Solution

Park trailers of any size with ease! Parkit360’s Electric Trailer Dollies are lightweight and great for mixed terrains, tight corners and up to a 6 percent incline. With weight capacities ranging from 5,000 to 15,000 pounds, these portable powerhouses can handle the most difficult parking challenges. Unlike a driver who relies on mirrors and backup cameras, the user faces the trailer, giving them complete visibility and control while parking. They can see exactly where the trailer is at all times and steer within inches of an obstacle if needed. The dolly’s compact design allows the user to park hitch-end forward as a serious theft deterrent, something that is nearly impossible to do with a vehicle. Powered by a 12V trailer-mounted or dolly-mounted battery, Parkit360’s Force and Transformer dollies are simple to set up and intuitive to use. Just freewheel the dolly to the trailer and attach it with one of the provided hitch balls, or one of their special hitch adapters. Then, it’s simply a matter of using the forward/reverse thumb toggle switch on the handle to steer the trailer into place. Have a tough parking situation? Parkit360’s Electric Trailer Dollies are a great solution!

Looking for a better way to secure your push pole? SeaSucker has come up with the perfect solution for holding your long and inherently unwieldy push pole when it’s not in your hands . A SeaSucker vacuum mount equipped with a rubber clamp and an adjustable strap is the perfect way to quickly and securely stow gaffs, nets and push poles. The adjustable strap holds objects with diameters ranging from 1 to 1.95 inches, and the 4.5-inch SeaSucker has the strength to hold just about anything you choose to strap down. Each 4.5-inch SeaSucker is pull rated at over 120 lbs, and an orange indicator band begins to appear if the vacuum mount loses some of its suction, letting you know it’s time to re-pump. There’s no licking required to attach SeaSucker products to glass, metal, fiberglass and most non-skid surfaces. The primary requirement is that the surface is non-porous, and SeaSucker will even attach to lightly curved surfaces. Another huge benefit is that SeaSucker can be mounted or moved wherever it’s convenient, with no need to drill holes in your boat.

Whatever happened to Sea Cat? By Thatch Maguire

A

bout 20 years ago, I had the opportunity to ride aboard a dual-hull, 21-foot center console called a Sea Cat. Like many others, I’ve been a fan of cats ever since. The ride of a dual-hull vessel, especially in choppy seas, is dramatically different from that of a mono-hull. The stability of a two-hull system creates a cutting effect, as opposed to the bounce associated with the plaining of the mono-hull. Study after study has confirmed this effect affords “cats” substantially better fuel economy as well as a much smoother ride and shallower draft. The “cult” of the dual-hull cat has its origins in Australia, where catamaran-style hulls have long been the choice for Australia’s working fishermen. The consistent chop in their seas requires the stability of a catamaran hull. In the United States, several companies pioneered development of the catamaran-style boats for our waters. In the late 1950s, Ray Leger began producing the Power Cat series on the West Coast and several other companies including Manacat and Ocean Star began producing cats in the East. Years after my ride aboard the Sea Cat, I purchased a 26-foot World Cat. I was told Sea Cat was now World Cat. I visited the North Carolina World Cat factory, where I was told they no longer produced the Sea Cat. Recently, I learned the Sea Cat is still being produced in Greenville, N.C. After a few phone calls, and a little Googling, I found Forrest Munden at Sea Cat Boats. The following interview with Mr. Munden attempts to unravel the mystery of “Whatever happened to Sea Cat?” Q: Mr. Munden, how is it you are today selling a vessel that many thought was no longer on the market? Weren’t you associated with the original Sea Cat I fell in love with? Munden: Yes I was. Sea Cat was originally created by Graham Flanagan in 1992. I was manufacturing Leisure Cat boats with Regal Marine in Orlando, Fla., and Graham was manufacturing Sea Cat boats in Greenville, N.C. The innovations developed on the Sea Cat seemed destined to have substantial influence on the boating industry. The boats were super fuel-efficient and rode smoothly in nearly any conditions.

Q: Well what happened? Munden: In 1996, I purchased Sea Cat boats and its Greenville manufacturing facility. During my first year with the brand, I designed and developed the World Cat line of catamaran boats. World Cat molds were manufactured by Vectorworks Marine in Titusville, Fla. by my good friend Jeff Gray, CEO of Vectorworks. Once we received the new World Cat molds at the plant in Greenville, we started making the World Cat and stopped making the Sea Cat. That was early in 1997. The Sea Cat molds were stored for another year and a half until my good friend Ken Hall (previous CEO of Proline/Donzi) purchased them. He owned the Florida boat company Sportcraft and wanted to add a catamaran line. He called the Sea Cat boat the Sportcat. Unfortunately, Sportcat and Sportcraft did not survive the 1998 economic downturn. The next I heard of Sea Cat was when a former Sea Cat dealer and two brothers from Columbia, S.C. splashed the 19-foot Sea Cat mold. Then, Jerry Semers purchased that mold from the brothers, who had closed their business. Mr. Semers’ started the new venture in Titusville, Fla., utilizing Vector Works Marine as a home base. He called the boat Sea Cat. After Mr. Semers passed away, the molds and tooling sat vacant for years. In 2017, a good friend and ex-Sea Cat and World Cat dealer invited me into a venture to make a new catamaran with the Sea Cat name. I reached out to Mr. Gray at Vectorworks and proceeded to do the tooling and mold building through their team. The result, introduced in 2019, is the new 260 Sea Cat Hybrid bay boat built by our partner Pete Caldwell, Caldwell Marine Designs. The original Seacat Boat built in 1992 was built again 27 years later at the same Greenville plant. Today’s vessel is capable of power up to twin 300 horsepower. Today’s 26-foot Sea Cat has handling characteristics far superior to the original that you fell in love with. The legend of Sea Cat continues as the most practical, smoothest-riding and fuel-efficient vessels this side of Australia. “The Legend Returns,” Seacatboats.com

mpoundments created by damming rivers and creeks all have something in common beginning in about June. Fish head out to the ledges, and it’s this summer pattern that brings anglers to the famous offshore ledges on my home lake, Eufaula, as well as on reservoirs around the region. Spawning is about over, and several game species, especially bass, are searching for food, cover and shade. The sharp ledges where the river and creek banks dropped straight down before the lake was formed are the perfect spot for hide and seek. From the headwaters, where the ledges are the shallowest, down to the dams, where ledges are sometimes too deep to be practical, there is a sweet spot that affords the perfect temperature, oxygen and other environmental necessities to maintain life and comfort. The difference in water temperatures at certain depths, generating schedule, current flow speed, lake level and many other factors determine exactly where this sweet spot is on any different day or hour. Those with the most experience on a given reservoir have a distinct advantage, but information pertaining to these criteria is

available at most U.S. Army Corps headquarters offices as well as from the Tennessee Valley Authority. Whoever controls the dams where you fish has the information you need. For Lake Eufaula, call (866) 772-9542 ext. 244. In most cases an app is available for your favorite lake. Ledges are nothing short of structure, and knowing where to look is a very important factor. Critical features support feeding advantages such as the sharpest of the sharp drop-offs, small ditches that intersect with such sudden drops, a rise in adjacent landscape creating a ski-jump effect, points, curvatures, and the list goes on. Some of these features create an updraft where cooler water is forced upward, and likewise, just the opposite only yards away. In all the mentioned areas, shad and other prey are disrupted by the sudden surge in water flow. Today’s electronics, with highdefinition displays showing us where bait and bass congregate, are a huge advantage to finding the sweet spot on the ledges. But a little old-fashioned map work is also key to putting yourself where the fish are likely to be. As always, know“ledge”—pun intended—is the key to success. Careful study of your lake master maps and identifying target returns can produce unbelievable results, not just in June, but all summer long. Billy Darby is a retired professional guide on Lake Eufaula. He can be reached at imfishing4u@windstream.net or (229) 768-2369.

What’s not to love about June. This is some of, if not the best time to fish, all year long. Our guides are gonna be all over the place. I’m not even gonna think about fresh water, if they open the spillways again, we’ll just deal with it. Some of our boats will be working the near shore reefs from Bayou Caddy to Pass Christian. Peak tide flows seem to work best on the reefs. Several of our boats will be down south on the eastern fringe of the Biloxi Marsh. The diving birds should point the way to big numbers of LA school trout. Other boats will be drifting grass beds at Cat Island. At all of the above places, the bait and tackle will vary. The Boat Monkey floats will get plenty of use. Sometimes we will have them rigged with 3 feet of leader, a 1/0 or 2/0 khale hook with either live shrimp or croakers. When the fish get snapping, switch over to the soft plastics(Matrix), on a 3/8 ounce jig head. Before the full and new moons, we will likely be Carolina rigging live baits over oyster reefs and other reefs. Let the tide tell you how much weight to use. Always use as little as you need. The triple tails should be around too. Keep an eye open for any buoy, pilling, or floating debris. Keep a big live shrimp handy to pitch to those tasty suckers. Should be plenty of sharks around too. If you ever wanted to get a kid “hooked” on fishing, shark fishing will get em. It’s gonna be hectic at the boat launches and popular fishing spots. Please be courteous to others. Offer help to those in need, and please be patient with the less experienced.

As Always, Have Fun and Be Safe

Pro-Tip Rigging and Knots Ever had a knot slip or fail? Tired of having issues connecting braided line or leaders? Over the years I have figured out what knots work best for me with different type and sizes of lines. You simple can’t use the same knot with everything and expect good results. Big mono likes a different knot than small mono. Braid likes a different knot than mono. Fluorocarbon, being stiffer, takes a different knot etc. You get the point. The key is to know what fails, what works, what you have confidence in tying, and trying to keep things simple. First of all my standard rigging for charter and personal use: I generally always have two rigs setup for my clients; Bottom rig and cork rig Bottom rig(Carolina)- 12lb suffix mono or 30lb suffix braid mainline, 1/2oz egg weight, swivel, 18” or so of 20lb red seagaur fluorocarbon leader, 2/0 live bait hook or 3/0,4/0 Kahle hook for croakers. This works for white trout, ground mullet, flounder, specks, drum, redfish, sheepshead. I prefer the mono except when I need the braid to “horse” fish out of structure or specifically targeting larger fish . 12lb mono is stronger than you would think. (Offshore/red snapper I use 65lb braid and longer 60-80lb fluorocarbon leaders and bigger weight, up to 8oz, and swivel, 6/0 or 7/0 circle hook.) Cork rig- 12lb sufix or 30lb sufix braid mainline, fixed ss wire cork of your preference ( I will never use a peg on, clip on, or cork made of crimped wire again, they all slide or break or weaken your mainline), 20lb red seagaur fluorocarbon leader of appropriate length (2’-6’ depending on where I’m fishing, long leader must be careful with and cast from fore or aft deck), split shot lead a foot or so above hook, 2/0 live bait hook or size 4 extra strong mustad treble hook. I also will use a slip cork with stopper knot at times if I want to get real deep without getting snagged. Cork rigs are primarily for speckled trout although we catch tripletail on them and redfish. Freeline rig- 12lb mono or 30lb braid, 6-18’ of 20lb fluorocarbon, 3/0 circle hook or 3/0 or 4/0 Kahle hook. Used for Mangrove Snapper and speckled trout and redfish. (Offshore: 50-65lb braid and 6-18’ of 40-60lb fluorocarbon, up to 7/0 eagle claw circle hook) Knots: Arbor knot- used for attaching line to spool. Works fine for all, sometimes braid will try to slip out though. For this reason and the fact that braid can slip around the spool, I prefer to always attach at least a small section of mono before my braid. I generally arbor knot 10’ of mono to the spool and double uni that mono to the braid. Improved clinch knot- I use this knot for 12lb mono only. I find it holds great and has excellent strength in the small mono. I will not use it for anything else. Bigger mono and any fluorocarbon it doesn’t tie as easy or want to cinch down. Most braid will slip or cut itself using this knot. Uni knot- One of my favorites. I use this in all my 20lb fluorocarbon connections and any big mono or fluorocarbon connections (can tie up to 300lb mono!). I also use the double uni-knot version to attach 20 lb. fluorocarbon leader to 12lb mono or 20lb fluorocarbon leader to 30lb braid or 40-80lb fluorocarbon leader to 50-100lb braid. This allows an easy (can double uni blind or in the dark) and quick knot for making freeline leaders, or to add fluorocarbon leader to your braid on your bait caster for slinging lures for trout. I haven’t used this in 12lb mono. Lastly, you can uni knot around the shank of a hook to “snell” it quickly. All my unis get 4-5 turns, 7-9 turns if using to snell. Palomar knot- This is the ONLY knot I will use to attach braided fishing line to a swivel or cork. This is the strongest and simplest knot you can use to attach braid to a swivel or cork or any terminal connection. (I don’t tie braid straight to lure or hooks, but some do). It does not slip or cut into itself which are major issues with braid and other knots. You can actually use this knot in any size or style line that you can physically get it to go through your terminal end. It’s one of the easiest knots to master and most forgiving. I hope this will help some anglers out. I see many mistakes people make every day. One of them being over-rigging and not trying to keep it simple enough. If you standardize your inshore live bait rigging to a simple bottom rig rod and a simple cork rig rod and know when to use either it will make your day more productive and you will spend less time worrying about if your line or knots will hold .

Where are we located?

Lure of the month for June is going to be one of the newest lure on the market, The Texas Custom, Double D Lure! While these are new on the market, people are hammering trout and redfish on them. These are very similar to the MR 27 different hooks and instead of suspending, these go down about 12” or so while being worked, and then float/waddle back up to the surface. Only downside to these, in some people eyes, is the price tag. You have my word though, they are plenty worth the price!

Offshore Report Derek Stiglet Nelson Outdoors Pro-Staff

June 2019

The King Mackerel is a fast moving predator with razor sharp teeth just like the Wahoo. They inhabit areas such as around standing gas platforms, artificial reefs and navigational bouys in search of food. Typical baits that surround these structures that the King Mackerel will target are cigar minnows, Blue Runners (Hardtails) and Menhaden just to name a few. They are common in a wide range of water depths out to 200+ feet of water. Having a good chart plotter and sounder will help assist in finding these fish lurking around below the waters surface in different areas of the water column around where the schools of bait are located. There are different methods in catching Kings. Trolling shake baits ( stretch 30s) , slow trolling live baits on the surface or at depths with a downrigger, or free lining live baits such as mullet, Hardtails or menhaden will help entice them to strike. Wire leader isn’t necessarily a must in all cases to catch them but it is preferred to prevent losing a lot of tackle. I’ll rig up a 3ft section of Malin single strand steel leader coming from a barrel swivel setup as a stinger rig with treble hooks fit to size of the bait I will be using if I am fishing with live baits. When trolling shake baits I will tie the 3ft length of leader straight to the lure. A spinning reel outfit or a conventional setup with a higher gear ratio is ideal as these fish run hard and fast especially when they strike the bait and it will allow you to retrieve the line quickly. Be prepared with plenty of tackle and steel leader and also the proper baits. Local bait shops will have all of the proper equipment and gear you’ll need to head out and target these fish to have a successful day on the water.

Warmer days are here so get up early and get out on the bite. Suspending jerk baits like the Rapala shadow rap and ripstop have been my trout baits lately. Fish them with patience letting them sit for a few seconds letting the fish react. Top water baits are still producing early and late in the day for trout and reds. I like using the skitterwalk when the water is choppy and spook jr.’s on calmer days. Pick your colors to the clarity of the water you are fishing and what give you confidence. Confidence in a lure does more for catching fish for me than anything other. Blue holographic and bone white are 2 of my favorite colors. As the shrimp move in soft plastics are producing all inshore species for me. Cast in to creek run offs where fish wait to ambush bait being pulled out. I like to slow flutter bounce or slow roll on the bottom my plastics. Use a 1/8 to ¼ oz. Bass assassin Pro-elite jig head depending on the depth of water you are fishing and what the bottom structure is. If fishing a oyster bottom I like to go with the lighter jig head so I am able to bounce it over the snags. I use Saltwater Assassin sea shads in a variety of colors and they all are producing fish. Go with more natural colors in clear water and chartreuse tails and loader colors in the stained dark water. Not to miss in June is the Hobie Bass Open Series in Lake Fork,Texas on the 1st through the 2nd and on Lake St.Clair, Michigan on the 29th-30th. The event is a catch, photograph and release (CPR) tournament where anglers measure and photograph their top three bass during each of the two days, to be scored by total aggregate length. As well as great cash pay outs winners of these events receive and invitation to the 2020 Hobie Worlds Tournament. June 15th the GCKFA 14th Annual Spring Kayak tournament will be held at Shoreline Park Gulf Breeze, Fl. This is a great tournament with inshore and offshore divisions! As always we keep a running tab of these and other kayak community events on our Kayak Fishing U Facebook page. With these longer days out in the sun take care of yourself. Wear protective clothing, a buff, and sunscreen when out fishing. It makes a huge difference in how I feel at the end of a day and how long I can stay out and fish. Remember while fishing from a kayak to always think safety. We are low to the water and not always easily seen. Keep a 360 degree light on at dark and low light conditions, wear a PFD, keep hydrated, and let someone know your float plan.

Saltwater Spotlight Captain Steve Perrigin Captain Steve operates his sport fishing charter operation out of Ocean Springs Harbor, Ocean Springs, MS. Steve is a husband, father and a cancer survivor. His 22 ft. Twin Vee Catamaran is located behind Ocean Springs Marine Mart where he offers half day, full day, and special charters. The following is a recent interview with Captn’ Steve. www.strictlyfishincharters.com

Q. What led you to a career as a sport fishing charter Captain? A. My main lively hood was a heavy equipment mechanic and I began fishing part-time run-

ning off shore trips in May 1998 mainly for red snapper. I went full time in March of 2005 and after Katrina moved to the Ocean Springs Harbor. After the BP oil spill I worked for BP for a while then down-sized and began to run primarily inshore trips. My short career with BP allowed me to purchase my current boat and my fishing trips have allowed me to keep it!!!

Q. What species of fish do you “target” on your trips? A. My main “target” is a good time for my clients, but depending on the time of year I like to find large speckled trout, black drum, red fish, and flounder. These are the staple species for our in-shore fishing area here on the Mississippi gulf coast. All of the aforementioned fish are great fun to catch and offer excellent table fare.

Q. What is your most memorable charter trip. A. Years ago the State Hospital in Meridian, MS booked a trip for 3 hospital residents and 2 counselors. It was a true joy to see how much

catching a fish brought a smile and positive reaction to the residents. One fellow never said a word the entire trip until he caught a fish. Every time he had a tight line he laughed and laughed. I will never forget that day. Outdoor experiences seem to help all of us and a “tight line” is just about icing on the cake. Also, my donated trips for the “Make A Wish Foundation” are a big part of my year. I am very proud that the money generated from that auction is going to such a positive cause. This non-profit foundation allows many young people to experience their heart’s desire at no expense to their family.

Q. What advice would you offer charter fishing clients for you or any other charter fishing service. A. That’s a great question….First of all come with a good attitude for having a good time whether you catch a fish or not. Next, please be on

time, that’s a big deal. Arriving a bit early is much better than being too late. Patience is a virtue and especially on a fishing trip. I am going to do my best to see that my folks have a successful and enjoyable experience.

Q. Do you have any comments on gear or equipment? A. I have to say that my Rhodan GPS trolling motor has been the biggest advancement to come along in recent years. The ability for me to

operate my position by remote control and also have the motor hold my boat’s position by GPS allows me to direct my attention to my clients. I can better help them with lure/bait placement and also assist them while landing a fish. If I could teach the Rhodan unit to wash my boat it would be the best deck hand money could hire.

Q. How to you see the future of saltwater sport fishing evolving? A. In my opinion the future of our resource is dependent on correct scientific data to guide federal and state regulations. I understand that

creel limits on certain species are necessary but they need to be based on solid science. The state of Mississippi seems to have really stepped up its level of study and seems to really be moving forward to help with correct information to guide our regulations.

Note: Captain Steve Perrigin is a USCG licensed charter captain and is located at Ocean Springs Marine Mart 1320 Harbor Road Ocean Springs, MS 39564

What’s Inside Your Reel? Hope everyone is enjoying the weather and getting the most out of their fishing opportunities. This month is less of a how-to article and more of a food-for-thought article. I was inspired this month by 4 separate customers who dropped off reels for me to work on. All 4 of the calls went the same.....I took my reel apart to clean or lube it and I can’t figure out how to get it back together. This is not uncommon and if this has happened to you don’t feel bad. Reels, especially late model reels can be very complicated. More so than most people think. Sometimes you just want to “open it up” to lube it and as you get that last screw out.....bam! It opens up like a spring loaded Swiss watch shooting parts all over the bench. When this happens, your project just become a lot more difficult. If you are lucky enough to find all of the parts, now you have to put them back together without having seen where they were. You can consult a schematic for your reel on the internet, but often looking at the schematic is just as confusing as the pile of springs, clips and gears in front of you. One other aspect is that many parts will go back into the reel in ways they were not intended. Drag stacks can be put back with parts in many different configurations but if they are not put back as intended the reel will not perform as it is supposed to. I have attached 2 pictures of disassembled reels. One is a Tekota 600 and the other is a Shimano Sahara 3000. This is everything that you can remove from both reels just to give folks an understanding of what is actually inside these reels. The whole point of this piece was to give those that have not been inside there reels an idea of what’s in there. Hopefully this will also help them make a better decision on whether they feel confident enough to service their reels or take them to a professional. As always enjoy your time on the water, take care of your equipment and it will take care of you.

Tiger of the Bayou

Jeff Jones

Brackish Coast Outdoors

Let’s talk flounder...these fish were one of my most inconsistent catch a few years ago, but then I hit the books and learned as much of their biology and lifestyle as I could, and I started connecting the dots on the water and finally started catching them consistently. Science holds a key that can unlock major success in fishing. For instance, knowing what a fish’s main diet is at certain times of year, knowing their preferred water temp and depth, and knowing their migration/spawning routes, can get you in the right location, throwing the right lures at the right structure, and can lead to a much better success rate. First off let’s talk about a flounders eating habits. Take one look at a flounder and you can understand at least a little bit about their feeding habits. They’re flat and camouflaged on their upper side, obviously they are primarily ambush predators. They lay in wait for an unsuspecting meal to swim by, then like a bolt of lightning, engulf the prey in their massive mouths. It’s game over for that prey item, they’ve met the tiger of the bayou. Their main diet consists of menhaden, anchovies, pinfish, croaker, mullet and of course “bull” or mud minnows. They also eat shrimp when the opportunity arises, but mainly it’s small bait fish. It has been studied that larger flounder don’t eat larger fish, they simply eat more small fish, so the old adage, big bait equals big fish, will not necessarily apply to flounder. For the artificial Angler like myself, use paddle tails and curly tails that have a similar profile to the baitfish listed above. My personal choice is from Z-man. The scented paddlerz, curly tailz, minnowz, diesel minnowz, and pogyz are all excellent choices, and provide different profiles that precisely imitates whatever forage is in the area. Choose your lure to “match the hatch” of the natural forage that is abundant in the area you are fishing. Another important aspect, is choosing the right jig head. Z-man has plenty of great options that feature an oversized 3D eye. The Texas Eye jig head allows for more movement and vibration on your retrieve and therefore a solid choice for murky or muddy water. The weedless Trout Eyes are great for fishing around grass or structure that will likely snag your hook. For open, clean water the finesse Trout Eye or the original Trout Eye is my preferred choice. I vary the weight of the jig head for the depth I am fishing, but a 3/16 oz is a good choice for generally any situation. My choice of gear is a 7’ MH Savur fishing rod, paired with an Abu Garcia Revo Wench in 5:4:1 gear ratio, with 30lb Suffix 832 braid, and a 20lb fluorocarbon leader. A good rule of thumb for flounder is, “if you don’t feel the bottom, flounder won’t find your lure.” Now let’s talk about where to find them. For this section, I’m referring more so to the Southern Flounder species. Generally I find founder in and around the mouths of bayous, creeks, rivers, etc. They prefer soft bottom sediment. Mud mixed with sand or oyster shells are prime flounder bottom. Since they are ambush predators they generally wait on the down-current side of structure waiting on an easy meal to swim by. Points, drop-offs, pilings, jetties, rocks, etc. can all be considered structure that can hold flounder. Cast up-current and drag your lure, touching the bottom, in as natural a presentation as you can. Once you feel that heart-pounding thump from a flounder, breathe, count to 3, count to 3 again, reel down your slack, then set the hook like you want to cross their eyes. Keep a low angle on your rod once you get it boat side to help avoid the dreaded hook throw. Please consider releasing the bigger fish. They are our breeding stock for the next generation. 15-20” fish are excellent table-fare! Good Vibes, Tight Lines, and God Bless!

RIGGING & JIGGING

Fish Where Fish Live Tim Barefoot

W

hatever you fish for, be it fresh or saltwater, you know where you should be fishing. But sometimes it can be frightening to cast into the heart of a snag or brushpile where the fish are, knowing you might lose whatever you have tied on. Here’s a simple way to avoid getting hung up. With the following snag-resistant rig, you can present a bait to the fish

where they live instead of trying to lure them out of their hiding place. I’m not saying this tackle is immune to mazes of mangrove roots or treetops, but it greatly reduces the chances of getting hung up. Protect the hook point with a fluorocarbon weed guard, and you can fish more effectively in thick cover. This method works with J hooks, circle hooks and some lures. I’ve been using this technique to make a weedless soft-plastic shrimp, and there are countless other applications. One of my favorite and most effective ways to use this is with a single hook, no weight and a live bait in shallow water. It also works well on a circle hook chin weight under a sliding cork over really rough bottom. Sometimes you have to go in the cover or drift just above it to get the bite. Most gamefish attack from be-

low, so a bait on a sliding cork is the ultimate target while staying out of snags. Here are the steps to snelling a weed guard onto the shank of the hook. I like the stiffness of Seagar 80-pound fluoro for weed guards. Depending on your application, other lines might work fine also. Make sure to choose a hook with an eye that will accept two pieces of the weed guard and the leader you are snelling. 1) Cut about 6 inches of 80-pound fluoro and bend it backward against the curve of the spool. This will mold the shape of your weed guard. 2) Insert both tag ends through the backside of the hook eye, leaving an inch of the doubled 80-pound fluoro on the shank of the hook. 3) Pass a leader line down through the eye of the hook and the center of the tag ends of the 80-pound fluoro. Pull out about 6 or 8 inches. 4) Holding the weed guard securely on the hook shank, make a 5- or 6-loop snell over the 80-pound fluoro, going forward toward the eye of the hook. DO NOT pull down hard on it right away. 5) Keeping the 80-pound fluoro straight on the hook shank, gently roll into place and push forward BEFORE pulling down hard to “cinch” the snell. 6) After everything is pulled up tight, trim the 80-pound fluoro off just behind the barb of the hook. Also, trim the doubled 80-pound fluoro close behind the snell. For a video tutorial on tying this rig, visit my website www. barefootcatsandtackle.com and watch the videos “Snag Resistant Circle Hook Chin Weight” or “Making The Weedless Shrimp.”

Fuel Capacity: 66 Gal C-Hawk’s philosophy is to keep it simple. Many of the company’s models are workboats, built to withstand conditions harsher than most recreational boats will ever experience. Yet the design of all their boats— recreational and commercial—is enhanced by proven construction methods and craftsmanship that produce a battleship-tough vessel. The goal of each employee is to provide a quality product and many years of boating pleasure. The C-Hawk 23 Center Console’s good looks hide the toughness of a battle-ready fishing machine. With a 14-degree deadrise hull, it shows off C-Hawk’s capabilities with a smooth ride in rough waters. This versatile boat is designed to be equally at home in bays, inlets and flats as well as offshore. It’s got an expansive casting platform and plenty of room to move around, while the large console offers a ton of storage space. The electronics box, switch panel and instrument panel give you all the control you need. Add a T-Top and you’ve got a boat that’ll protect you from the elements, as well. The flat washboard appeals to commercial fisherman, and with a long list of optional accessories it makes for an exceptional recreational fishing boat, as well. Add a leaning post with cushion, grab bar and rod holders. C-Hawk can even build one with a larger 95-gallon fuel tank and raw water wash down to enhance your fishing experience.

B

uffalo aren’t typically thought of as a game fish species. While they are a favorite for bowfishing, many conventional anglers might not even know they exist. Hugh Newman, of Broken Bow, Oklahoma, would likely tell you these slow-moving bottom-feeders are well worth pursuing. He caught the new 66-pound, 3-ounce state record smallmouth buffalo in May, and the fight on 8-pound-test must have been exhilarating. Newman’s tactics might not be the go-to if you choose to target buffalo. They are suckerfish and feed mostly on small bottom-dwelling critters and algae. Typically anglers fishing for buffalo use nightcrawlers, dough baits or cut bait. Newman caught his on a swimbait, while fishing southeast Oklahoma’s Broken Bow Lake. The huge buffalo crushed the existing record of 44 pounds, 2 ounces, which has stood since 2007. IGFA’s All-Tackle World Record for smallmouth buffalo is 82 pounds, 3 ounces. That fish was caught from Athens Lake, Texas in 1993.

Evinrude Gives Boaters the Confidence to Pursue THEIR LIFE ON THE WATER

W

ith this month’s Spring Into Savings sales event, Evinrude has made a tremendous offer on the cleanest, most powerful outboards in the world. The innovation and performance of the E-TEC engines gives boaters confidence in any situation. From the small but powerful 15 H.O. all the way up to the white-knuckle-inducing 300 HP E-TEC G2, Evinrude’s daringly inventive outboards outperform everything else in the market. What else could you expect from the original inventor and continuous re-inventor of the outboard engine? Evinrude refused to compromise and drift along with the rest of the industry. With the innovative fuel-delivery technology in their direct injection system, they developed two-strokes that burn more efficiently. The result is a two-stroke that is quieter, cleaner, more fuel efficient and more powerful than comparable four-strokes. Evinrude outperforms the competition and they are not shy about it. The E-TEC G2 is a powerful engine designed to muscle through big water and take you offshore quickly and efficiently. With up to 30 percent more torque, its throttle response is unmatched. It’ll put you on plane quicker with the power to pin you to your seat. And all that muscle in the E-TEC G2 is cleaner and leaner thanks to Evinrude’s Engine Management Module, which brings computer-controlled precision to fuel injection. By delivering exactly the amount of fuel needed to the engine, the system provides amazing fuel efficiency to go along with instant throttle response and smooth quiet performance. It has up to 15 percent better fuel efficiency, which will keep dollars in your wallet and extend your range. It’s also the planet’s cleanest outboard. With unbelievably low hydrocarbon emissions, no out-

board, two-stroke or four-stroke, runs cleaner than the E-TEC G2. Using advanced technology, Evinrude is committed to creating environmentally responsible engines with cleaner exhaust emissions. The E-TEC G2’s reportable emissions are lower than any other engine in its class. These are bold claims that are backed by the numbers. You can see for yourself with the performance reports on the Evinrude website (www.evinrude.com). Right down to the gearcase, everything about E-TEC engines is designed to optimize performance. Their advanced SLX Gear Case provides superior handling and performance with reduced engine drag and the ability to easily shed weeds. Freshwater or salt, no matter where you do your fishing and boating, E-TEC and E-TEC G2 engines set the performance standards for outboard engines by boldly going against the grain. And Evinrude has made it easy to handle all that power. All E-TEC G2 engines were designed to make boating easy and intuitive. The Evinrude Intelligent Piloting System, which includes the all-new iDock, is a suite of integrated engine features that instills confidence in all boaters, seasoned and novice alike. If you’re shopping for a new boat or if you’re in the market to re-power the one you’ve got, Evinrude is making decisions mighty easy right now. With five years of coverage and a rebate up to $2,000, going with the best engines on the market is even more of a no-brainer. You’ll have to act fast, though. The Evinrude Spring Into Savings sales event is only available through June 30.

“If you or someone you know has a pond, lake or boat-dock, get a BO-JO FISHLIGHT! The best fish attractor I’ve ever seen!” - Fish Fishburne

J

eff Bonawitz, of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, had already caught several 30 pounders from the Susquehanna River on April 6 and was running low on bait. He selected the biggest bluegill from the bait tank, and the fish that ate it turned out to be a 50-pound, 7-ounce new state record flathead catfish. “I could tell it was big. It kept hanging down deep and when it finally came up to the top, we thought it might be a mermaid,” joked Bonawitz. “I’ve fished the Susquehanna for years, and I’ve never caught anything quite like it.” It took 25 minutes to land the fish on an 8-foot, medium-action spinning rod loaded with 25-pound-test mono. Bonawitz kept the fish alive in an aerated container at his home until the following day. On April 7, the fish was officially weighed, setting a new state record for the species. The previous record, caught in 2006, weighed 48-pound, 6-ounces. There are several organizations that claim larger fish as the world record, but IGFA recognizes a 123-pound flathead caught from Elk City Reservoir in Kansas as the All-Tackle World Record. Upon weighing the fish, Bonawitz with assistance from his nephew, Dylan, 8, released the catfish back to the Susquehanna River. “It was such an amazing fish,” said Bonawitz. “I thought the best thing to do was put it back so that maybe the next guy could catch it. I have a feeling this record may not last very long.”
