Whatever happened to Sea Cat? By Thatch Maguire
A
bout 20 years ago, I had the opportunity to ride aboard a dual-hull, 21-foot center console called a Sea Cat. Like many others, I’ve been a fan of cats ever since. The ride of a dual-hull vessel, especially in choppy seas, is dramatically different from that of a mono-hull. The stability of a two-hull system creates a cutting effect, as opposed to the bounce associated with the plaining of the mono-hull. Study after study has confirmed this effect affords “cats” substantially better fuel economy as well as a much smoother ride and shallower draft. The “cult” of the dual-hull cat has its origins in Australia, where catamaran-style hulls have long been the choice for Australia’s working fishermen. The consistent chop in their seas requires the stability of a catamaran hull. In the United States, several companies pioneered development of the catamaran-style boats for our waters. In the late 1950s, Ray Leger began producing the Power Cat series on the West Coast and several other companies including Manacat and Ocean Star began producing cats in the East. Years after my ride aboard the Sea Cat, I purchased a 26-foot World Cat. I was told Sea Cat was now World Cat. I visited the North Carolina World Cat factory, where I was told they no longer produced the Sea Cat. Recently, I learned the Sea Cat is still being produced in Greenville, N.C. After a few phone calls, and a little Googling, I found Forrest Munden at Sea Cat Boats. The following interview with Mr. Munden attempts to unravel the mystery of “Whatever happened to Sea Cat?” Q: Mr. Munden, how is it you are today selling a vessel that many thought was no longer on the market? Weren’t you associated with the original Sea Cat I fell in love with? Munden: Yes I was. Sea Cat was originally created by Graham Flanagan in 1992. I was manufacturing Leisure Cat boats with Regal Marine in Orlando, Fla., and Graham was manufacturing Sea Cat boats in Greenville, N.C. The innovations developed on the Sea Cat seemed destined to have substantial influence on the boating industry. The boats were super fuel-efficient and rode smoothly in nearly any conditions.

Q: Well what happened? Munden: In 1996, I purchased Sea Cat boats and its Greenville manufacturing facility. During my first year with the brand, I designed and developed the World Cat line of catamaran boats. World Cat molds were manufactured by Vectorworks Marine in Titusville, Fla. by my good friend Jeff Gray, CEO of Vectorworks. Once we received the new World Cat molds at the plant in Greenville, we started making the World Cat and stopped making the Sea Cat. That was early in 1997. The Sea Cat molds were stored for another year and a half until my good friend Ken Hall (previous CEO of Proline/Donzi) purchased them. He owned the Florida boat company Sportcraft and wanted to add a catamaran line. He called the Sea Cat boat the Sportcat. Unfortunately, Sportcat and Sportcraft did not survive the 1998 economic downturn. The next I heard of Sea Cat was when a former Sea Cat dealer and two brothers from Columbia, S.C. splashed the 19-foot Sea Cat mold. Then, Jerry Semers purchased that mold from the brothers, who had closed their business. Mr. Semers’ started the new venture in Titusville, Fla., utilizing Vector Works Marine as a home base. He called the boat Sea Cat. After Mr. Semers passed away, the molds and tooling sat vacant for years. In 2017, a good friend and ex-Sea Cat and World Cat dealer invited me into a venture to make a new catamaran with the Sea Cat name. I reached out to Mr. Gray at Vectorworks and proceeded to do the tooling and mold building through their team. The result, introduced in 2019, is the new 260 Sea Cat Hybrid bay boat built by our partner Pete Caldwell, Caldwell Marine Designs. The original Seacat Boat built in 1992 was built again 27 years later at the same Greenville plant. Today’s vessel is capable of power up to twin 300 horsepower. Today’s 26-foot Sea Cat has handling characteristics far superior to the original that you fell in love with. Match the Hatch with Soft Plastics
S
altwater anglers today have grown comfortable with tossing softplastic swim baits and grubs for just about any predatory species that swims in our waters. From stripers and weakfish to fluke and even scup, there’s almost no fish that can’t be caught on some soft, pliable, life-like imitation designed to match bunker, bay anchovies, sand eels, spearing and the like. Once the vanguard of freshwater bass and walleye pursuit, today’s soft plastic line-up now includes dozens of lures perfect for matching the hatch in saltwater environs. Refined over the years to offer a facsimile of just about every baitfish species that swims they can be switched for another profile, size, color or action in a matter of seconds. In many cases you might not even need to retie your rig because you can slide one soft body off the hook and replace it with another. A small tidal creek I like to work for school stripers and an occasional keeper illustrates this point clearly. The water here passes under a culvert. As the current pinches and picks up speed, schoolies take up position in a small drop-off just down-tide from a sand bar. I work this pocket consistently using a variety of soft plastics, starting with small, lightweight, straight-tailed offerings in late April when the fish are sluggish, and progressing to larger designs with curly tails and paddle tails through early June. I’ll throw white most of the time in the clean, crisp waters of early spring, a natural bunker or mullet pattern as zooplankton begins to color the water, and a chartreuse pattern if rain and wind cloud up the creek. The point is, soft plastics make it easy to match the size and appearance of growing or changing baitfish species, temperament of target fish and even the clarity of the water. As a rule, I fish most of my soft bodied lures without teasers and directly behind a jig head ranging in size from 3/8- to 2 ounces. If I want an additional splash of color, more exaggerated action or a larger profile without more weight, I add a Fat Cow trailer. Should I need a soft plastic lure to fall more slowly, I’ll add it to a deer hair bucktail instead of a bare jighead. With

Photo by Tom Schlichter. the smallest soft plastics, I’ll use spinning gear and 8- to 20-pound test braid or 12- to 15-pound test mono line. Obviously, with larger plastics targeting bigger fish, you’ll need to go to heavier gear.
SNAP TO IT
The invasion of tiny snappers on the inshore scene in early July presents another opportunity to match the hatch with soft plastic lures. By the time the diminutive blues first begin to grab onto your offerings, you can bet that fluke, weakfish, blues and even a few striped bass have begun to consider them a primary food source. With that thought in mind, small silver, pearl and blue curly tail bodies come into play. As the little blues become more and more aggressive and increase in size, bump up to a four-inch paddle tail to more closely resemble a snapper profile and body shape. Similar selections can double as peanut bunker patterns when that mass exodus gets under way in late August and early September.

During spring and early summer, it often helps to drop down a size or two when the bite takes a breather. In the fall, the opposite tends to be true. With bigger bait getting ready to head south, larger fish in hot pursuit, and evening temperatures chilling the water just enough to bring a little urgency to the feeding patterns of local gamesters, moving up to larger soft plastics often results in more action and bigger fish. Larger Slug-Gos and Fin-S-Fish in the six- to nine-inch class can imitate large sand eels, big spearing and live eels while Tsunami Wild Eye Shads and Panther Martin BigFin paddle-tail swimbaits in oneand two-ounce sizes match well with adult bunker, sand eels, snappers and even mullet. As you can see, soft plastics fit the bill for a wide variety of fishing

Additional match-ups that have served me well in recent years include Fin-S-Fish, Bass Assassins and Kalin’s Evil Eels for bay weakfish, school stripers and bluefish feeding on evening tides around bridges, bulkheads and shadow lines. The larger Slug-Go sizes ranging from six- to 12 inches in pink match live squid while dark purple or black in a nine-inch size can be used to imitate eels when twitched slowly around structure, especially after dark. The point is there are virtually endless possibilities with today’s soft plastic battery. Figure out a few you like and stock up, making sure to cut in new styles and sizes from time to time. The soft plastic revolution continues to reshape fishing possibilities. For greater success, embrace its on-going evolution and make these lures a staple in your everyday arsenal.

ne of the things I enjoy most about fishing is the opportunity to change things up. Rather than head to the same couple of spots to try for the same types of fish on every trip, I like to head out and explore. The more options available, the happier I seem to be. And I want to be the one who decides what to fish for, how long to stay out, and exactly where we’ll be headed while on the water. Scup fans will appreciate the Long Island Sound and Rhode Island access in July, August and September, while the fall run of stripers, blues and false albacore allows anglers to actually follow the schools from Race Rock to the New York Bight.” Because locations are centrally located, each Freedom Boat Club also offers plenty of fishing possibilities within its own local waters. The new Marine Max Lindenhurst location provides a good example. It’s within easy reach for fluke, stripers and some really solid bottom-fishing. “Our Lindenhurst location is smack in the middle of some of the best fishing on the east coast,” say Simon. Located at the head of Neguntatogue Creek, you have the Copiague Hole just minutes away for catching anything from blowfish and fluke to the occasional striper or weakfish. Head 30 minutes west and you can plug, bucktail or clam-chum for stripers under the Wantagh and Meadowbrook bridges, or live-line bass on bunker in the ocean waters outside of Jones Inlet. Head 30 minutes east and you can cast soft-plastic jigs and swim baits around Captree Bridge and Fire Island inlet for more linesiders. When the bunker, bass and blues shift east from outside of Jones Inlet, you can continue to chase them from Fire Island Inlet.” Fluke are also a hit out of Lindenhurst, notes Simon, with action in the State Channel, Massapequa Cove, on the flats around Captree Island, up inside Fire Island Inlet, and out in the ocean in 50- to 70-foot depths. If fishing inside Great South Bay you can make long, comfortable drifts from Ocean Beach to the Fire Island Lighthouse with spearing and squid combo baits, or jig a 1-ounce Spro Bucktail tipped with Gulp! Alive grubs up on the flats. You’ll also find artificial reefs a short ride outside both Jones and Fire Island inlets for targeting scup, sea bass and blackfish. To top things off, there is also great crabbing and plenty of snappers to catch just minutes from the marina during July, August and September.

FISHERMAN’S STEW FROM “SIMMERING THE SEA, DIVERSIFYING COOKERY TO SUSTAIN OUR FISHERIES”
RECIPE Serves 4
SEAFOOD
1/2 pound mussels, cleaned 1/2 pound littleneck or other clams 2 pounds lobster, only claws and tail in shell 1 pound Acadian redfish fillets (or other white fish), cut into pieces 1/2 pound squid, rings and tentacles Pinch of saffron (optional) 2 tablespoons olive oil Salt and pepper to taste

1/2 onion, diced into 1/2-inch pieces 2 tablespoons olive oil 1/3 cup white wine 1 cup water (or kelp broth) 1 15-ounce can diced tomatoes 1/4 cup pitted green olives, rinsed and sliced 1 tablespoon capers, rinsed 2 garlic cloves, smashed and coarsely chopped 1 bay leaf 1 teaspoon red chili flakes Salt and pepper to taste 1/4 cup parsley, roughly chopped Several slices crusty bread

Rinse mussels and clams under cold running water. Refrigerate to keep cool. Split lobster tail in half lengthwise and cut into bite-size pieces. Split claws in half lengthwise. Marinate lobster, fish, and squid with saffron and 2 tablespoons olive oil. Place in refrigerator to keep cool. Sauté onions over medium heat in 2 tablespoons olive oil until translucent, 4 to 5 minutes. Add white wine and reduce by half. Add water or kelp broth, tomatoes, olives, capers, garlic, bay leaf, and chili flakes. Cook for 2 to 3 minutes. Add clams and cook for another 4 to 5 minutes. Add mussels, lobster, squid, and fish. Blowfish seem to be making a comeback in the waters of Great South Bay. One hotspot is the Copaigue Hole, just a short run from the Freedom Boat Club at Marine Max I Lindenhurst.
“We just opened the Lindenhurst location this spring and we think it’s going to be a real winner,” says Simon. There are plenty amenities here like a great restaurant with a rooftop bar on the gated premises, showers and a pool overlooking Great South Bay. Even better, this location is as centrally located for dining, fun and nightlife as it is for fishing. A quick run across the bay puts you on Fire Island, Gilgo Beach or Tobay Beach. Freeport’s Nautical Mile isn’t far either. There are plenty of dock and dine options in the immediate area as well and we run a lot of social activities out of here as well so there’s always a chance to raft-up or rendezvous with other club members, meet up for dinner or lunch, or simply relax at the club. “I
f you like a short ride to the offshore grounds but still want plenty of opportunities for big shark, tuna and mahi, New Jersey’s Manasquan Inlet is a great jumping off point,” said Capt. John Williams. He should know. Having run Blue Chip Sportfishing (732-539-7911; http://www.bluechipsportfishing.com) in Point Pleasant Beach for over 30 years, he’s been making the run longer than most. The great equalizer for offshore anglers in this area believes Williams is a big change in water depth that starts just 16 miles offshore. Known as the Mud Hole, it extends from its shallowest point another 30 miles before banking northeast toward Chicken Canyon. Even better, the entire area is littered with wrecks and structure points.
“In some places the Mud Hole is about 1.5 miles across,” noted Williams. “In others, it’s 5 miles wide. At its edge, it runs 95 to 120 feet deep before dropping to 300 feet deep in the middle. Those rapid depth changes cause all sorts of upwellings, eddies and current changes which play havoc with baitfish. The tuna and shark intersect the waters here as they follow the 20-fathom curve north during their migrations.” Shark action starts in May and increases through June. As in most offshore situations, Williams looks for temperature breaks to concentrate the bait but is often cued into action by birds, whales and porpoise. The biggest makos and thresher sharks come through first while the water is still pretty cool, about 65 degrees. “There have seen some interesting changes in our shark fishing of late,” Williams revealed. “The past few years have seen more big threshers in the 300-plus-pound class than big makos. We’ve also seen a lot of southern sharks showing up including spinners and black tips. No matter what kind of sharks we see, we’ll generally drift using mackerel or bunker chum and bluefish or chub mackerel fillets on a 10/0 circle hook. We use a wind on leader and a 4 to 5 wire with a 10/0 circle hook. A Penn 50w and a 50-pound class rod complete the setup” As for tuna, a solid bite of 20- to 40-pound bluefin gets started in late June when water temperature hits 68 degrees. Williams switches to trolling once he begins to see bluefin in his slick. He’ll troll two planer boards with spoons plus various green, yellow or purple Jets and Zukers in his spread. Later in the year, he’ll head farther offshore to chunk – usually in Chicken Canyon, which is about 55 miles southeast of the inlet. “You always want to be looking for temperature breaks, surface activity and clear water when tuna are the target,” stressed Williams. “Also, don’t pass on the lobster pots. There are plenty of them in the Mud Hole and they hold a ton of mahi.” Overnight accommodations are easy to find in Point Pleasant Beach. Williams suggested Surf Side Motel. f you’ve ever wanted to tangle with Pacific halibut, this summer would be a good time to book a trip to northern California to do battle with some of the biggest, best-tasting flat fish on the planet. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) reports that the 2019 recreational Pacific halibut season is off to a strong start. Since opening day on May 1, many north coast anglers have braved less-thanperfect weather and ocean conditions and were successful in pursuing this highly prized fish. Preliminary catch data available through the first five days of the fishery indicates almost 2,500 pounds of fish were caught. “This is a level of success more typically seen during the summer months,” said CDFW environmental scientist Melanie Parker. Again this year, the public can follow the progress of catch through the season compared to the quota on the CDFW Pacific Halibut webpage, which is updated weekly. The fishery is scheduled to be open through Oct. 31, or until the quota has been met, whichever comes first. The 2019 quota is 39,000 pounds, approximately 8,000 pounds greater than last year. rift boats long ago earned their place in big-water trout fishing. With an oarman steering anglers into range of fish as the boat hurtles downriver, they are an extremely efficient way of covering water and catching fish. Drift boats are designed to go one direction: downstream. They track straight, and their light weight makes them agile in avoiding obstacles. They are awesome boats, an icon of the sport, but in many situations there’s a case to be made for the lowly aluminum jonboat in tailwater trout fishing. Perhaps it’s not fair to refer to these vessels as lowly, or even as jonboats. River boats might be a better description of the trickedout aluminum crafts on rivers these days. They might not have the classic look associated with fly fishing, but equipped correctly there are many advantages to a flat-bottomed aluminum boat.

he International Game Fish Association (IGFA) recently announced changes to its angler recognition programs, including new eligible species for Line Class, Tippet Class and Junior/Smallfry world records; new Slam & Trophy Club programs; standard minimum ratios required for Line Class and Tippet Class world record submissions; and clarifications to its World Record Requirements. These new world record categories, angler recognition programs and world record requirements began May 1. IGFA has begun maintaining separate Atlantic and Pacific record categories for bonefish in the same way that it does for snook. This will provide more opportunities for anglers to pursue world record catches of this iconic game fish. Current bonefish records will be reassigned based on where they were caught. Two new species will be added to Line Class, Tippet Class and Junior/ Smallfry record categories: snubnose pompano and milkfish. Both are highly sought after by anglers in the Indo-Pacific and will comprise part of the new IGFA Inshore Grand and Royal Slam Clubs. New Inshore Grand Slam and Royal Slam Historically, IGFA’s Inshore Grand Slam Club has included four species: bonefish, tarpon, permit and snook. The IGFA has expanded this club to include Atlantic bonefish, Pacific bonefish, Atlantic snook, Pacific 4

Mobility: The most obvious advantage is the ability to move quickly upstream or down. Equipped with a conventional or jet outboard, there is no stretch of river the angler can’t reach. This removes the necessity for separate put-in and takeout locations. From a single put-in, miles of river are accessible, and if the fish aren’t biting where you are, just crank the motor and move. Maneuverability: With its squared angles and flat bottom, a jonboat can’t match the straight-line tracking or agility of V-hulled boats on the drift. If left to its own nature, a jonboat would spin down the river. However, equipped with a rowing seat and oarlocks, it does a passable job of imitating the function of a driftboat, and that flat bottom is good in skinny situations. Let’s not forget the aluminum hull, which stands up to a serious beating. A trolling motor at the bow can completely eliminate the need for rowing in many situations. Drifting stern-first downstream, a trolling motor with a remote can do almost anything a pair of oars can. The poor guy who was previously strapped to the oars can now fish and steer from the bow. Stability: Leg braces are required to fly fish from drift boat. They can be equipped on a jonboat, but they’ll likely just be in the way. That wide, flat hull makes a jonboat stable. Even in rough water, it’s possible to stand on the deck and cast, turn around or do jumping jacks if you want. The ability to move around on a deck is a benefit that must be experienced to understand; it makes fishing easier and more comfortable. Obviously, a flat-bottomed, aluminum boat isn’t suitable in all situations. But depending on where you fish, it is definitely worth considering. An added bonus is versatility. Catching any three of these species in a day constitutes an Inshore Grand Slam, catching any four in a day is an Inshore Super Slam, catching any five in a day is a Fantasy Slam. Catching all 13 species during a lifetime earns the new IGFA Inshore Royal Slam. New Bigeye and Yellowfin Tuna Trophy Clubs Any angler who catches a bigeye tuna or a yellowfin tuna fishing in accordance with IGFA International Angling Rules that weighs at least 90 kg (200 lbs.) or has a fork length of at least 1.7 m (70 inches) will qualify for one of these new trophy clubs. Minimum Ratio Requirement The minimum ratio for world record catches will be set at 1⁄2 to 1 for all Line and Tippet Classes. Under this requirement, the weight of the fish must be at least half as much as the Line or Tippet Class that it qualifies for based on pounds. Changes to World Record Requirements IGFA’s World Record Requirements have changed to ensure consistency with the internal record review process. Importantly, these changes eliminate of the requirement that, “the fish must be a species commonly fished for with rod and reel in the general area where the catch was made.” IGFA now welcomes world record applications from anglers passionate about catching lesser known or exotic species. IGFA has also amended its Record Catch Regulations to clarify that, “The IGFA will not recognize or approve any IGFA World Record application where a financial award is offered for obtaining the record.” This was necessary to avoid legal disputes.

eff Bonawitz, of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, had already caught several 30 pounders from the Susquehanna River on April 6 and was running low on bait. He selected the biggest bluegill from the bait tank, and the fish that ate it turned out to be a 50-pound, 7-ounce new state record flathead catfish. “I could tell it was big. It kept hanging down deep and when it finally came up to the top, we thought it might be a mermaid,” joked Bonawitz. “I’ve fished the Susquehanna for years, and I’ve never caught anything quite like it.” It took 25 minutes to land the fish on an 8-foot, medium-action spinning rod loaded with 25-pound-test mono. Bonawitz kept the fish alive in an aerated container at his home until the following day. On April 7, the fish was officially weighed, setting a new state record for the species. The previous record, caught in 2006, weighed 48-pound, 6-ounces. There are several organizations that claim larger fish as the world record, but IGFA recognizes a 123-pound flathead caught from Elk City Reservoir in Kansas as the All-Tackle World Record. Upon weighing the fish, Bonawitz with assistance from his nephew, Dylan, 8, released the catfish back to the Susquehanna River. “It was such an amazing fish,” said Bonawitz. “I thought the best thing to do was put it back so that maybe the next guy could catch it. I have a feeling this record may not last very long.”
