Living The T
he origins of Salt Life are pure. With two simple words in a scrawling font, the iconic brand began as a tattoo inked on the backs of a couple of surfing fishermen in Jacksonville Beach, Fla. Four hard-core watermen began grassroots promotion of the design in 2003, selling bumper stickers and T-shirts. During the humble early years, no one foresaw the eventual scope of the worldwide phenomenon they had launched. Salt Life has come to represent everything everyone loves about the ocean. At a glance, the now-familiar logo proudly displays a love of the saltwater lifestyle. Fisherman and diver Jeff Stillwell, who just happens to be president of Salt Life, said he is blessed to be part of the phenomenon. “Whatever attracts you to the water, Salt Life represents that,” he said. “If you happen to love to fish, it means fishing to you. I happen to be an avid diver. It means diving to me. If you’re a surfer, it means surfing. If you just like hanging out on the beach and enjoying a cold beverage, it means that.” No longer just T-shirts and decals, Salt Life has grown to include a huge assortment of gear and apparel. Two concepts accompany all their offerings. The first holds true to the original message, a devotion to the coastal lifestyle and its fashions. Whatever I need, I’ve got it right there with me. ’Cause once I get in that chair, I’m going to be there for a while.” Only an angler would recognize the need for this kind of design, and it’s this kind of innovation that has made Salt Life a lot more than just a cool logo. Stillwell said they’ve got a line of waterproof gear on the horizon, and he’s excited about the territory expansion of Salt Life Lager. Yep… Salt Life launched an easy-drinking beer to celebrate its 15th anniversary in 2018. “It goes hand-in-hand with our lifestyle,” Stillwell said. “We’re all out there on the water for a great fun-filled day in the sun, and at the end of the day our customer loves to kick back, as do I, with a nice cold beer.” But all the fun, and all the success, comes with responsibility. Without healthy oceans to play in, there would be no Salt Life. The company has joined with conservation organizations like Artificial Reefs International and Roatan Marine Park in protecting and enhancing the resources so that future generations can enjoy living the Salt Life.

Key West Cuda Bowl

cott Christian of Alpharetta, Ga., released 262.5 inches of barracuda to win the fly division of the 2019 Cuda Bowl Tournament Feb. 2 in the Lower Florida Keys. Guided by Capt. John Benvenuto of Key West, Fla., he earned the title of divisional grand champion for the second consecutive year. Christian’s catches included the fly division’s largest individual barracuda, measuring 47.75 inches. Andrew Hunt of Marathon, Fla., won the Cuda Bowl’s spin division championship, releasing barracuda totaling 278.5 inches. He was guided by Capt. Chad Huff of Fort Myers, Fla. The tournament’s female grand champion was Julie Leeman of Tucson, Ariz., who released barracuda totaling 240.5 inches on spin tackle. She fished with Capt. Chris Leeman. Kai Decker of St. Augustine, Fla., earned the title of top junior angler. Guided by Capt. Mike O’Brien of Summerland Key, Fla., the 13-yearold released 124.5 inches of barracuda. The tournament’s Ben Gravett Memorial Team Trophy went to Florida anglers Bob Sellers of Sanford and Eddie Hunt of Deltona, fishing with Capt. Bo Sellers of Ramrod Key, Fla. The anglers released 12 fish measuring a total of 524.75 inches. Trent Miller of Hamilton, Illinois, caught the largest individual barracuda in the spin division. He released the 51.75-inch fish while guided by Capt. Scott Irvine of Key West. Marathon angler Wade Mayberry scored the most releases in the spin division with 32. He fished with Capt. Albert Ponzoa, also of Marathon. In the fly division, Jim Knowles of Round Hill, Va., released 22 barracuda to take the “most releases” title. His captain was Peter Heydon of Key West. elcome to the challenge of spring fishing. I know a lot of people struggle to consistently pattern fish in the month of March, so I have put together a few key points that should help out. Although the days may warm up considerably, the

water can still stay chilly. The continuation of passing fronts can drop the water temperature quite quickly as it struggles to climb up the thermometer, keeping fish less aggressive. In March, I still hold onto some of the same structure I key on in the coldest months. Although I may start to mix in more shell and grass into my target areas, one thing that needs to remain from the cold weather handbook is quick and easy access to deeper water. With frequent cold fronts, although they may not have the same punch, the fish will still look to retreat to more stable water temps in the depths of a general area. The warmer and sunnier the day, the farther the fish will stray from that deep-water access, but they will not completely abandon its safety. I like to focus on the outer edge of the guts that lead from deeper water to the flats early, and I’ll follow them up on the flat as the day warms. With the fronts comes dreaded high pressure! Here are a couple tactics I rely on in this situation. First, and typically the most productive, is to downsize your lure. This is especially true in the spring when forage is young. I also like to go with a natural or translucent color patterns for a more natural approach. I tend to slow down and work lures closer to the bottom, as well, when the barometer is on the rise. My next approach, when nothing is working in a high barometer setting, is to do something completely opposite of what I just recommended. When all else fails, I tie on a very noisy lure that creates a lot of water displacement. This could be a noisy topwater, a noisy rattling lure or a lipped crankbait-style plug. At this stage, I am just looking for a reaction bite. If I can aggravate them enough, they just might take the bait. Although these techniques are polar opposites, I find the fish to be on one end of the spectrum or the other when dealing with high pressure. You just need to experiment and figure them out. Charleston’s March Fishing Forecast By Captian Mark Phelps
T
he key word for March is transition. March will show us the first signs of spring here in the low country. The days will be longer and the weather will be warmer than the past few months, but we will still have some cold days. Fishing here in Charleston will be hot and cold as well. Some days will have lots of action and other days will a little tough. Because the weather will change from hot to cold in March, you have to change your tactics to catch fish consistently. When the weather is cool and calm, the redfish will be schooled up in their winter spots and you can have some great sight fishing to large schools on the flats. When the water turns warm, however, the fish often spread out. This means you have to be flexible with how you fish. The fish might be in one location feeding like mad one day and be completely void of the area the next day. When this happens you

have to think like a fish and figure out where they went. Sometimes they have simply moved around the bend or to the other side of the channel. With all the change and transition, you also have to change the type of bait you use each day. When fish are schooled up, the DOA shrimp or jerk baits will work very well. You may even want to try the new DOA 4” Shad tail baits. This bait looks a lot like the spring time mullet. However, when they spread out you might find the water is off color or the wind is blowing. In this case you may need to try anything from cracked crab to cut mullet to mud minnows. You will find that the redfish are finicky—one day they will eat only one thing, and the next day they will only eat something else. This happens more in March than any other time of the year. If the weather is on the warm side you might start catching trout by the end of the month. I would use a DOA shrimp or mud minnow under a popping cork to catch these. I like to drift a cork along the grass later in the day when the water is the warmest. The trout that have moved into the marsh will go into warmer water next to the grass looking for something to eat. You may also want to use some fiddler crabs or cut shrimp near any structure. This will produce some nice sheep head as well. The key thing to remember is to be flexible and don’t be afraid to change when, where, and how you are fishing to catch fish in March. T
he fishing this winter has been as up and down as the weather. When temperatures are mild and the wind cooperates we’ve had some great days at the pier. We’ve seen sheepshead of all sizes and a number of them weighing in between 5 and 8 pounds. While those are impressive fish, we haven’t seen many 10 pound behemoths that typically surface between November and March. The current pier record of 13 pounds 11 ounces was set in March of 2017 by Seung Noh so maybe this will be the month we see the next record breaker. With the warming temperatures, anglers should expect to see a few different species reappear near the pier. Expect to see the return of flounder and black drum while sheepshead should still be hanging around the pilings. Anglers will be able to continue targeting red drum and trout as they become more aggressive in the warmer water. Mud minnows fished either under a cork or on a Carolina rig could be the ticket. Cut bait or fresh shrimp are also productive options as the bite picks up. Pier regulars are typically successful with artificial lures when targeting trout as well. Some of the pier favorites are Billy Bay silver/gold flake, Zman slim swims, and Vudu shrimp in a variety of colors. We’ll be getting some new colors and styles in so you’ll want to stop in and grab a pack. Charleston Offshore Fishing Forecast for March
O
ver the past month, the tuna and wahoo bites in the Charleston area have continued to remain strong. If you are looking to catch big wahoo and tuna, you better get out on the water soon. On your next trip, I would suggest paying attention to the latest sea surface temperatures. Pay special attention to warm eddys that break off the Gulf Stream and push warm waters into the ledge. At the ledge, check for bait, temperature breaks, and signs of life such as the presence of birds and bait. Rutgers University provides a free website (marine.rutgers.edu ) that has resources you can use to check current water temperatures. Now that you have found warm temperatures to drop your lines, let’s ensure you are using the correct lures. You will often find that aggressive wahoo and other large pelagic fish will strike too high, hitting the head of the lure, therefore missing the hook. Sometimes this results in a hook from the outside in as depicted in the picture. Take a look at your old trusty go-to lure and notice the teeth marks all over the head; you’ll see what I’m talking
about. I have started a lure company called Head Striker Lures that addresses and corrects this problem. I strategically moved the hook closer to the head of the lure so that even when these high strikes occur, the fish’s jaw still finds the hook. This lure is designed specifically for the aggressive strikes that come from big game pelagic fish such as billfish, wahoo, dolphin, 4 CHARLESTON

and tuna. I have tested my lure design for an entire charter season and they have yielded amazing results. An example of one of my Head Striker Lures is depicted in the picture provided. Artificials vs. Oyster Beds & Structures
A
s we move into March here in the Lowcountry, most anglers are excited, anticipating the arrival of Spring, and as we move closer to Spring, our inshore game fish become more active. A lot of experienced anglers start to look for these active fish around structure in shallower water and lurking over and around Oyster beds. Some may ask themselves—why do fish like Spotted Seatrout, Red Drum and Flounder lurk around these types of structures? The answer is simple. They are looking for food, their prey, such as Shrimp, Mud Minnows, Mullet, Crabs and other small species of crustaceans and fish, but the hard part of trying to target these inshore game fish in these locations is doing it without snagging or getting hung up in the debris or Oysters. After all, plenty of us inshore anglers have experienced fishing with all kinds of lures and trying to twitch them through and over Oyster beds and around dock pilings without getting hung up and losing our tackle. One of the most popular types of artificial combinations that are thrown is a quarter ounce jig head with a paddle tail or curly tail Grub in all kinds of colors, and they do work fantastic for catching the inshore slam. But if you are looking for a way to fish these

locations and increase your ability to not only catch fish, but to cast the same lure over and over, increasing your chances without getting hung up nearly as often, I will share a trick that works quite effectively and has been successful for me often. Growing up, not only fishing inshore, but I also was addicted to fishing for a lot of freshwater game species, Largemouth Bass being at the top of the list. When it comes to fishing for Largemouth Bass, you find yourself using all kinds of lures. But, unlike a Bass pro who is pressed for time and rushing to catch and land their fish for tournaments, we find ourselves fishing with a little more finesse. We use lighter lines, lighter rods and reels and lures that can be rigged weedless, like artificial worms, rigged Texas style, weedless tube baits and weedless Flukes because Bass love to hide and lurk in debris, rocks and weeds, and trying to drag an open hook through these locations can be almost impossible. So, I decided years ago to use some of these weedless hooks and Flukes to target inshore fish around Oyster beds and structure to find out if I could successfully cast repeatedly into the debris where these fish are lurking and jig, twitch and jerk my bait, imitating Mud Minnows, Glass Minnows and Mullet, and retrieve my lure without losing it. What I had discovered for myself is that I was able to target and successfully land more fish and use the same lure over and over without losing it, 10 times more effectively than my standard jig 6 CHARLESTON

head and Grub. In Exhibit A, you will see 4 weedless hooks. The first 2 hooks from the top down are weightless. The third and fourth hooks are weighted. In Exhibit B, you will see 3 Flukes by Zoom rigged weedless. The first Fluke from the top down is rigged weightless. This style will allow the Fluke to descend slowly, sinking from the belly forward. The second Fluke is rigged weedless, weighted. The weight on the

hook is at the belly. This allows the Fluke to sink faster, dropping by the belly and slightly forward. This technique allows for more of a jerk-bait motion. The third Fluke is rigged weedless, weighted and the weight is at the front of the hook. This allows the Fluke to sink fast in a nosedive motion, which is great for twitching or jigging and using in deeper holes and faster moving water. There are a number of artificial bait companies that sell Flukes and jerk baits in all types of shapes and sizes. Some designed specifically for inshore saltwater and some designed for both fresh and salt. In Exhibit C, you will see an example of three popular styles of baits by three different companies rigged weedless, weighted. From the top is a Z-Man jerk bait. The second is a jerk bait by D.O.A., and the third is a Fluke by Zoom. I have tested these brands in various colors and find them to be some of the

most effective I have used. So, if you are trying to target some of these fish hiding in these difficult locations, try using baits like these set up weedless and find out for yourself if they help you successfully pull a monster out of that mess. et it warm on up! When the weather gets hotter and the days get longer, it tis’ the season for bait fish to start returning to the surf. We can expect to see whiting, spot, menhaden, and bluefish, with others to follow. Bait fish are the first sign of the ocean coming back to life for the summer. Last year, we had good-sized pompano and black drum arrive early in search for food. With another mild winter, we hope for a repeat this spring. However, there’s a whole lot of ocean, so we’re looking for a series of consecutive hot days to help heat up the Atlantic surf. But hey- as always, fishing’s fishing, so at the very least come enjoy a relaxing day out at the Folly Beach Fishing Pier.

The Southside Fishing Report March Forecast for Kiawah, Seabrook & Edisto Islands
W
ith the arrival of March, hopefully Spring has sprung and any approaching cold fronts will be minor ones. No matter what the Spring temperatures bring us warm or cold all wildlife reacts to the increasing amount of daylight that grows with the approach of Spring. Bait will slowly start to fill or creeks and activity and variety of species will increase daily. The speckled trout have been staging off the edges of flats and creek mouths in 8-15’ of water, they prefer a slower retrieve and most of our strikes have been near the bottom, and the color of soft plastic hasn’t made that much of a difference lately. The red drum are still in large groups on the flats and around structure ( docks, rocks and oyster beds) but their patterns have been changing daily with the warmer temperatures and arrival of bait, so a variety of live, dead and artificial baits is always a good thing to entice a bite on slower days ( bait shrimp and blue crab have worked best lately). The sheepshead bite has been strong inshore and around the nearshore reefs with majority of the larger fish coming off the reef. Before the warmer weather is an everyday thing it is a great time to take care of some boat, motor, trailer and rod/reel

Boating in the Lowcountry Get Ready for Boating
W
armer days, pollen and budding flowers point to beautiful boating days ahead. Now is the time to start getting the boat ready. Once the warm weather breaks, you don’t want to miss out on the first beautiful weekend because you waited too long to prepare. Old fuel, dead batteries, broken trailer springs and more can delay your first trip out on the water. First, consider putting a slow trickle charge on your batteries to bring them back to life. Check the oil in four stroke outboards and stern drive engines. Is it dark and dirty? When was the last time you changed the oil? How about the fuel system? When did you last replace your pre-filter and engine fuel filters? If your fuel tank is not full, add some mid-grade non-ethanol fuel to boost the octane. Inspect the bilge area for signs of oil or fuel. If you see any oil or smell any gasoline, determine the source and solve the problem before attempting to start the engine. Inspect fuel lines on all boats and check the engine hoses and belts on stern drive engines. If you drained the block for winter, ensure all engine plugs are installed correctly.

With the cowling off or the engine hatch open, start the engine on the hose and check to be sure the water pump is pumping sufficiently. When was the last time you replaced the water pump? Inspect the engine area while the engine is running to be sure there are no water leaks from pumps, hoses or plugs. Bring the engine up to temperature to be sure there are no alarms. Turn the steering to be sure that mechanical systems have not frozen or that hydraulic systems have not developed a leak. Check the condition of all sacrificial anodes (zincs). Check out navigation lights, blower, horn, and any other accessories. Now it’s time to inspect the trailer. Check tire pressure, wheel bearings, springs, bunk brackets, lights and the winch operation. Is the winch strap old and tattered? It is relatively easy to replace. Always refer to your owner’s manual for other items that should be inspected or replaced annually. If you plan to have a mechanic or dealership perform your spring service, be sure to schedule it soon. As soon as we get a nice warm stretch, backlogs will run up to two to three weeks very quickly. Making Sense Of Fly Rods & Line Selections By Scotty Davis
I
t’s dizzying. Walking into a fly shop and seeing 100’s of rods with writing that might as well be Sanskrit on it. Line weights, lengths, and actions can be confusing, so here’s a run-down. Fly rods are designed to carry a fly line that is a certain weight. The line weight in grains corresponds to a line weight that is industry standard. For example an 8 wt fly rod will handle lines in the 200-220 grain class easily. With trout fishing, where the flies are small and presentation is paramount, a lighter line will be more beneficial. The lighter your rod, the more tippet protection you will have: The rod will bend and absorb the strain of a stretching leader. In saltwater where leaders often exceed 12lbs, this is not as much an issue. Length of rods can also be confusing to beginners. In today’s world, we consider a 9wt rod a standard length for most fly fishing. In saltwater, 98% will be 9 footers. Rods that are shorter (6-8wt) are helpful in very tight quarters such as the Southern Appalachian mountains. Consequently mending (or controlling the speed of the drift by manipulating the line) becomes harder with the shorter rods in streams and rivers. Two handed rods,or Spey rods, can reach 16w and are the ultimate in line control. Rod actions are listed as slow,
medium, or fast action. The slowest rods are delicate presentation masters that are generally easier to learn to fly cast since you feel the rod loading and unloading easier. The faster action rods can be considered the Ferraris of fly fishing. They are harder to control and cast, but as you get progressively better at casting, these will have more to offer you. They cast a tighter loop, thus beating windy conditions and long casts. Fly lines can be just as confusing. Most red fishing, here in Charleston, is done with floating lines. An 8 wt floater would be designated as a WF8F, or weight for- wards floating line. In different scenarios, slow to fast sink lines will get you into the fishes zone more effectively. A WF8i would be an intermediate sinking line. Most of today’s fly lines are weight forward. The inner core of fly lines is very important. Lines labeled “tropical” are designed to fish waters from 60-90 degrees. Their core remains stable at these temps, however, if you were to fish them in a cold trout stream, they would not be pliable enough to properly cast. On the other hand, a cold water trout line will turn into a limp noodle in the heat, and it will be impossible to cast.

Lowcountry Kayak Fishing Can You Find the Spots?
T
he weather is getting nicer, the water is warming up, fiddlers are coming out of hibernation and all sorts of bait is pouring back into the creeks. It’s time get your kayak back into the water (if you were not a winter yak angler) and what better species to chase after in March than fat sassy speckled sea trout! The great thing about warmer weather and warmer water is that the trout top-water bite turns back on with a vengeance! There are few things more fun than getting out onto the water just before sunrise stealthily gliding up to within casting distance of a grass line and throwing a Zara Spook Jr up to the edge of the grass and “walking the dog” back to the kayak just waiting for that speckled sea trout to explode on your bait. That top-water bite can be short lived though, on a clear skied morning it can over in less than an hour. When the top-water bite turns off, it’s time to tie on a suspending twitch bait (the Mirrolure 17MR-18 /SBG is one of my favorites) and throw it right back in the same areas that you were working your top-water baits. The trout start to move deeper in the water column as the sun comes up and the suspending twitch bait is the perfect middle of the water column bait to get the trout bite to fire back up. The long cast
followed by a 2- 5 count pause before the twitch, twitch, pause then hopefully a strike from a hungry trout, but don’t reel in that lure after one or two twitches, I have caught numerous trout right next to my kayak working a twitch bait back to my yak. If I am not able to get out on the water at sunrise, I tie on an Eye Strike Trout Eye jig head (1/8oz) and put a Zman Slim Swimz in “opening night” color and begin my search. Everyone has a go-to
bait that they always have tied on to at least one rod, the slim swim is mine! In just a couple of weeks (March 17th) Lowcountry Kayak Anglers will launch our inshore trail tournament series, the first event will be held at Paradise Island Public Boat Landing located at the end of Chandler Road in Awendaw SC. If you have never fished in a tournament but have always wanted to try, this would be a great tournament to start with. The target species will be Speckled Sea Trout and the biggest three trout caught (using the catch/photo/ release method) wins the tournament. If you have never fish at Paradise before the best advice I can give you is to get out on the water there at the bottom of the tide, you can learn a lot about the river when you can see it at low tide; where the oyster racks, drop offs and troughs are located. Remembering that Trout are ambush predators, knowing the river bottom terrain can give you some insight as to where the trout might be during different parts of the tide cycle. Carolina Flyfisher Shad Run and Done By Scotty Davis
T
here baaack! My favorite time of the angling year. For the uninitiated in the American Shad world, it’s historic, easy, and fun for any age. Did you know the shad saved George Washington’s army at Valley Forge? During a particularly harsh winter, many (some account as much as half) died from starvation. When the spring run of shad entered the river, the troops netted them with the aid of horses by the thousands. Shad festivals and planking parties occur all up the east coast, from the St. John’s River in north Florida to the New England Coast and are almost as much fun as the fishing, but not quite. Pandemonium would be the best word to describe the fight. They are incredibly powerful for their size and use their large surface area to their advantage. Once they enter the freshwater rivers for their annual spawning run, they quit eating. Like most anadromous fish, their mind is set solely on making babies. However, much like salmon in the Pacific NW, they can be caught by using the right fly. Locally, it’s 99% a game of chartreuse. White, pink, red CAN work, but I assure you chartreuse WILL work. It’s a reaction strike. I don’t think they are trying to eat it personally, but either kill it or are simply biting out of annoyance. Since the most productive method is to “swing” a fly, I think the latter makes more sense since the fly is constantly in the fishes face as it positions itself in the best current. Fish 2 flies- always. They will hit the trailing fly 9 times out of 10 and your bite ratio will skyrocket. I’ve tested the theory during a hot bite and it’s so very true, drop to one fly (add a tad of weight to compensate- and nada, zip, zero. The best tip I can give you here is to attach the trailer fly with a different color mono-
filament. It will make untangling so much much easier. I like to use a 150-250 grain sinking line and a 4-5’ leader for the fishery here in S.C. Whether it’s in the Cooper or Santee river systems, this gives me the best range in the swift and deeper currents upriver. I don’t care for the taste (at all), but shad roe is considered to be a Southern delicacy. Wrapped in bacon, fried, and served over grits is the classic method. Overall, I enjoy shad because they fight like few other fish can and it’s generally a happy light hearted affair. Oh did I mention, you’ll never be alone up the river. It’s no secret.

ith a claim of being the oldest city in the United States, St. Augustine, Fla. is certainly rich in history. Stroll the streets and you’ll see Spanish colonial architecture, beautiful stretches of sandy beach and ample parklands awaiting exploration. Head out on the water, though, and you’ll also discover tremendous inshore fishing. “Redfish and trout action is really good in our inshore waters during the spring season,” said charter skipper Tommy Derringer of Inshore Adventures (www.Inshoreadventures.net; 904-377-3734). “There’s only a couple of months here when it’s clear enough to sight

fish, so you really want to take advantage of it. The action begins in January and lasts through March and into April. This is shallow water casting up on the flats and back in our numerous feeder creeks. Basically, any creek or flat between the Francis and Mary Usina Bridge and the Palm Valley Bridge is worth a shot.” According to Derringer, reds are easiest to spot on a dropping tide. The water is still pretty cold this time of year, so areas that warm quickly are where you’ll want to start. Look for oyster bars or shells on the bottom as the biggest draws, but if the tide gets really low depressions eventually hold most of the reds. Typically, inshore redfish in this area are “slots” weighing 2 to about 10 pounds. Casting a small soft-plastic minnow or grub with a light jig head is a productive and sporty way to get in on the fun. “You want to use a 2500 size spinning reel with a 7-foot medium-light action rod, 10-pound test braid and a lightweight white or chartreuse lure because fish can be spooky in the shallows,” noted Derringer. “Make long casts so as not to crowd your quarry, and choose a lure that lands with a soft splat rather than a big splash. Live shrimp and minnows work well, too, as long as they are presented gently.” If you can’t isolate reds, Derringer suggested backing out into the main channel of the Intracoastal Waterway and working edges and pockets for sea trout. This bite is best from late March into April as the water warms up. Try a MirrOdine Suspending Twitchbait, a soft plastic paddle-tail, or a live shrimp suspended beneath a float, and you’ll see plenty of action. Most of the trout here measure 16 to 20 inches, but if you pass on these and keep looking you might come across pods of bigger fish with some lunkers in the 5- to 8-pound class. If trailering your own boat, Derringer recommends launching at the Vilano Landing Boat Ramp. You can get bait and lures right across the street at The Bait Shack (904-217-3486). f you’re an angler who enjoys following up a day on mountain trout streams with a refreshing craft beverage or two, cast your attention to the Blue Ridge mountain town of Hendersonville. This North Carolina town, about 22 miles south of Asheville, offers miles of stocked trout waters, as well as the popular Hendersonville Cheers! Trail. The two resources make it possible to spend the day catching three types of trout – rainbow, brown and brook – while spending an evening exploring three types of craft beverages – beer, wine and hard cider. First, the fishing part. North Mills River is the prime trout stream in the Hendersonville area. The river’s 4-mile section of delayed harvest waters receives an annual infusion of 11,000 trout from N.C. Wildlife, divvied between brook, rainbow and brown. Spring is a great time to fly fish the delayed harvest waters of North Mills River because no trout have been harvested since Sept. 30. Another hot spot for trout fishing is just across the Henderson County line toward Brevard. The Davidson River offers miles of public trout waters that receive annual stockings of 16,500 fish. Other lesser-known spots for fishing near Hendersonville include
three streams on the eastern side of Henderson County, about 20 to 30 minutes from downtown. Rocky Broad River has a 1.2-mile stretch of hatchery support waters from Rocky River Lane to the Rutherford County line near Chimney Rock, while Cane Creek, near the Fletcher community, has 1.5-mile stretch of hatchery supported waters. For those who really want a unique experience, Little River in DuPont State Recreational Forest provides not only a scenic setting for trout fishing, but also a unique one. Delayed harvest waters flow through undisturbed mountains and over several notable waterfalls. Those waterfalls were immortalized on Hollywood’s silver screen in The Last of the Mohicans, as well as the backdrop for the exploits of Katniss Everdeen in the original Hunger Games movie. When the fishing is done, the Cheers! Trail awaits. The trail is one of North Carolina’s best, featuring 16 craft producers offering a variety of experiences. Beer fans love Sierra Nevada’s tasting room, which is one of the largest on the East Coast and features an expansive patio and outdoor amphitheater, while Bold Rock Hard Cider has emerged as a national leader in the hard cider industry and regularly hosts live music (indoors and outdoors), along with cidery tours and a food truck. Several craft producers on the trail create small-batch beverages prized for their quality and originality. Three breweries – Southern Appalachian, Triskelion and Guidon – are within a few blocks of each other in the Depot District, while Sanctuary Brewing Co. is only a few blocks away on Main Street. I am often asked when is the best time to plant fruiting plants. My answer is usually the same; the best time is 20 years ago or today. The second best time to plant is during the winter months. Plants are dormant, and can be easily shipped and planted with no stress on the plant because there is not a lot of maintenance once the plant or tree has been planted. Simply dig a good hole, water thoroughly
at planting, and take the rest of the winter off. Even though there are no signs of growth above ground, the root systems will have time to get adjusted to their new location and begin to initiate new root growth. There are plenty of advantages of growing your own edibles. First of all, you know what has been done over the course of the growing season from a chemical stand point. Second, the fruit just taste
better coming out of your home orchard versus buying fruit from the grocers that have little to no flavors. s past president and current board member of IUSA (the organization that ratifies world records for spearfishing), I get to share the excitement of big fish applications. The entire IUSA board was amazed by a recent submission. We received word that Luis Viyella had speared a 480-pound yellowfin off the Dominican Republic on Dec. 23, 2018. If approved, this fish would not only be the new spearfishing world record, but it would also beat the current IGFA All-Tackle rod-and-reel record! The All-Tackle stands at 427 pounds, held by angler Guy Yocom and caught off Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Viyella supplied the required photos of the fish, the measurements, the weighing, and the certified scale. He provided witnesses and documented the “Story of the Hunt” which was well-written and riveting. Viyella was new to freediving and bluewater hunting but accompanied by an experienced friend. They were targeting wahoo that day when the tunas showed up. He was excited when his buddy speared a 125-pound yellowfin. As requested, Viyella added a second shot to the fish—a common practice to secure the fish and make the extraction quicker and easier. A bigger tuna showed up, but Viyella’s speargun was already discharged and embedded in the 125-pound tuna, so he called out for his new Daryl Wong speargun from the boat. It wasn’t a bluewater gun, and it wasn’t the ideal set up, but he needed to act quickly. Viyella attached a line and float to the reel gun, dove down, and fired a well-placed shot into the tuna. After attaching additional floats, he made headway in raising the tuna toward the surface. His buddy dove down and placed a second shot to the head, helped manage the lines, and kept sharks at bay until it was landed—all the things a good buddy does.
News of this magnificent fish traveled fast. Viyella was told that, if approved, his fish would eclipse the current spearfishing record of 353 pounds. During the application process, he learned the rules the hard way. In order to qualify, one must shoot and land the fish without assistance from others. It was heartbreaking for Viyella and the board, but his catch is still outstanding, and IUSA awarded a meritorious award. Viyella accepted it with grace and gratitude. Anglers Seek To Cement Legacies At 2019 Bassmaster Classic
T
he 2019 Bassmaster Classic, scheduled for March 15-17 on the Tennessee River, will feature the usual mix of established pro fishing superstars and hungry young pros who are destined to be the stars of tomorrow. The 52 anglers converging on Knoxville will be gunning for the largest share of the $1 million prize fund, and they’ll be aiming to establish their angling legacy by winning the most important title in professional fishing. Among the field are eight former Classic winners, including four-time champion Kevin VanDam of Kalamazoo, Mich., and defending champion Jordan Lee of Grant, Ala., who last year became one of only three anglers to claim back-to-back wins in the event. Seven of the pros have hoisted the Toyota Bassmaster Angler of
the Year trophy, including 2018 AOY winner Justin Lucas of Guntersville, Ala., and Aaron Martens of Leeds, Ala., who has claimed the award three times. “The Classic is a showcase for some of the most accomplished bass anglers in the world,” said B.A.S.S. CEO Bruce Akin. “You’ll have veteran pros out there who’ve experienced the huge stage that is the Classic and excelled in that environment in the past. But you’ll also have some young guys who are just chomping at the bit to make a name for themselves. “That’s one of the most exciting things about the Classic—it literally will change someone’s life forever.” Anglers hungry for first-time Classic glory include Florida’s Drew Benton, Tennessee’s Brandon Lester and Arizona’s Clifford Pirch — just to name a few. Whoever wins the event, the immediate effects will be easy to see. There’s the world-famous Classic trophy, which weighs more than 40 pounds and is easily the most coveted piece of hardware in professional fishing. Then there’s the $300,000 first-place check and the chance to stand before an arena full of screaming fans as confetti cannons set the stage for the accomplishment of a lifetime. This year’s weigh-ins will be held in Thompson-Boling Arena on the campus of the University of Tennessee. As always, the Classic will be held in conjunction with the fan-favorite Bassmaster Classic Outdoors Expo presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods. Known as the most important consumer show in the bass fishing world, the Classic Expo will be held in the Knoxville Convention Center and the adjacent World’s Fair Exhibition Hall. Companies from across the fishing industry use the Expo annually to debut new products, and fans will be able to purchase many lures, rods, reels and accessories for the first time anywhere. he Blue Wild Ocean Adventure Expo is south Florida’s premier watersports expo. J
ust looking at a map will tell you the Sea of Cortez is a fish trap. Separated from the Pacific Ocean by Mexico’s nearly 800-mile long Baja California Peninsula, it’s a 62,000 square mile canyon that drops to depths approaching 10,000 feet. The sportfishing out of Cabo San Lucas, on the Peninsula’s southern tip is legendary. It is a bustling destination where marlin, sailfish and tuna abound. But Capt. Jimmy Nelson, host of the TV show Livin’ The Dream, pointed to a quieter destination and some awesome fishing up the Peninsula’s East Cape. Out of the Buena Vista Beach Resort about an hour’s drive north of Cabo, the Sea of Cortez drops to 1,000-foot depths just a few hundred yards off sand beaches. There’s a fleet of sportfishing boats waiting to take anglers offshore to chase all the big pelagics, and the inshore action borders on unbelievable. Even shorebased fishermen can catch some species typically associated with long runs offshore. At a place renowned for billfish, Nelson said the inshore action is as much of a reason to go as the marlin. “You never know what you’re going to get. There’s all kinds of things that will be right there on the edge,” Nelson said. “Roosterfish, African pompano, cubera snapper, Sierra mackerel, even dolphin, wahoo and yellowfin tuna will hit your popper right off the beach.” Never knowing what’s on the end of the line requires anglers to gear up. This is not the same as inshore fishing in the Gulf of Mexico or Atlantic. Nelson said casting 8-inch poppers or live lookdowns from shore is a ton of fun and requires 8000 size spinning reels. A big cubera snapper slamming your popper is a fight you’ll never forget. “It’s a rush,” he said. “You’re catching a bottomfish on top, so they go straight down to the bottom. You have to gear up with some pretty heavy tackle.” Trolling just off the beach is another tactic that puts anglers on a surprising array of the Pacific’s best sportfish. Big roosterfish might be primary target, but again, you never know what will eat when you’re pulling lookdowns and goggle eyes. Big yellowfin tuna have been known to surprise anglers just off the beaches, so 30 wide reels and heavy tackle are required. COASTALANGLERMAG.COM • THEANGLERMAG.COM
