DESTINATION: El Salto, Mexico FISH: Largemouth Bass PEAK SEASON: September-July THE FISHING: There might be a few lakes out there that produce larger largemouths on occasion, but none are as consistent as Lake El Salto at producing huge catches of quality sized bass with the ever-present potential to catch a true giant. For more than 30 years, El Salto has been one of the world’s best bass fisheries, and it remains right at the top of the bucket list for travelling bass anglers. It is a place where 100-fish days are normal, the average fish weighs 4 to 5 pounds, and 7- to 10-pound fish are a regular occurrence. The best day on El Salto? Well, the lake record bass weighed 18 pounds, 6 ounces. The record for most bass caught in a day stands at 607 fish. El Salto is a 25,000-acre impoundment of the Elota River. It sits in the foothills of the Sierra Madre Mountains in the Mexican state of Sinaloa. A yearround growing season and the introduction of Florida strain largemouth bass in the 1980s helped build this big-bass factory. Abundant tilapia as a forage species as well as varied habitat and lots of sunken timber maintain it. If all this doesn’t pique your interest, it’s worth mentioning that many of the biggest fish caught each year from El Salto are victims of topwater tactics. INFORMATION: www.anglersinn.com

Mongolia

DESTINATION: Khentii Aimag and Khovsgol Aimag, Mongolia FISH: Siberian Taimen PEAK SEASON: June 15-October THE FISHING: Imagine fly fishing a river for trout that can weigh 20 pounds

or more. Now imagine these giant trout surface feed on ducks and rodents instead of insects. Sounds like a fairytale, right? Well it’s not. Fish like this actually exist, but the behaviors of Mongolia’s Siberian taimen are more aptly described as the stuff of nightmares than fairytales. The taimen is the largest, most ferocious salmonid in the world. Tactics for catching them include chugging giant topwater poppers on 9-weight fly rods, and the violence exhibited on a taimen’s take can only be matched by the ensuing fight. Anglers can expect to tangle with good numbers of taimen in the 6- to 15-pound range on a week-long camp-and-float through gorgeous Mongolian canyons. A trophy longer than 40 inches and weighing 25 pounds or more is a definite possibility. But the fishing is only part of what makes a Mongolia so special. The warmth of Mongolian hospitality, the skill of its guides and the beauty of its scenery make for an unforgettable expedition. Taimen fisheries in Mongolia are catch-and-release, fly fishing only with a single barbless hook.

DESTINATION: San Cristobal, Galapagos Islands, Ecuador FISH: Striped Marlin, Blue Marlin, Black Marlin, Wahoo, Yellowfin Tuna PEAK SEASON: January-April THE FISHING: Everyone has heard of the tortoises, diving iguanas and other strange wildlife that made the Galapagos Islands famous. The incredible bluewater fishing is not as well publicized. Deep sea currents carry warm waters and plentiful baitfish past this underwater mountain range about 600 miles off the coast of Ecuador. Blue, black and striped marlin congregate to feed around banks that rise to 300 and 600 feet from more than 2,000 feet of water. It’s some of the best fishing in the Pacific, and it’s only about an hour’s run from the docks at San Cristobal. The striped marlin bite might be the best in the world, with fast action for fish that average 200 pounds and get up into the 350-pound range. Blacks and blues are less frequently encountered than striped marlin, but they are plentiful and big. Fish from 500 to 800 pounds are the norm. Topwater popper fishing for yellowfin tuna is off the chain for fish up to 150 pounds. Big dorado, African pompano and Almaco jacks are bonus fish. And the wahoo fishing is good, as well. Florida Keys

DESTINATION: Florida Keys, U.S.A. FISH: Tarpon PEAK SEASON: April-June THE FISHING: Although the Florida Keys aren’t as remote as many of the marquee fishing destinations this planet offers, the fishing is second to none. On the southern edge of the continent, where the Gulf Stream carries fecund waters from the Gulf of Mexico through the Florida Straits to the Atlantic, this chain of islands is perfectly situated to create one of the most productive marine environments in the world. Big-game sportfishing and backcountry fly fishing arose from the outstanding and diverse fisheries of The Keys. Year-round, there is excellent fishing inshore, nearshore and offshore. One of the most iconic of these fisheries is for big flats tarpon. There are always tarpon present in the Florida Keys, and nowhere else in the world do they run so thick through clear, shallow waters during their migrations. In ultra-clear water, sight fishing for these beasts from a flats skiff has to be the ultimate shallow-water experience. The size and raw power of tarpon are unmatched among flats species. The aerial displays of fish heavier than 100 pounds are part of what makes fishing in The Keys legendary. INFORMATION: fla-keys.com

Franklin County, Florida DESTINATION: Franklin County, Fla. FISH: Tarpon, Redfish, King Mackerel, Wahoo, Jack Crevalle, Amberjack, Gag Grouper, Pompano PEAK SEASON: June-December THE FISHING: Take a step back in time to experience Florida’s Forgotten Coast. Every cast could produce something different in one of the most diverse ecosystems in the world. Last month, Hurricane Michael lashed out on this beautiful slice of the Panhandle, but the fisheries should bounce back as strong as ever. You’ll find offshore species like wahoo, grouper and sailfish, as well as inshore species like pompano, redfish, tarpon, jack crevalle and speckled trout. In early spring, look for cobia and Spanish mackerel nearshore, while inshore you’ll find trout and redfish crushing topwaters. In summer, the king mackerel bite can be non-stop and tarpon are big and plentiful. Several species of snapper and grouper are always on the menu while offshore, blackfin tuna, wahoo, sailfish and more can be had. As we get into fall, big jacks will be tearing up tackle and the delicious flounder will be found as they spawn. False albacore or bonito can warm up a cool day in the blue water, also. From the mouth of the Apalachicola River to Carrabelle, you’ll find some of the hottest action anywhere! Redfish, trout and flounder abound, and you can cast for freshwater species like bass and stripers the same day. INFORMATION: www.floridasforgottencoast.com

DESTINATION: Kona Coast, Big Island, Hawaii FISH: Pacific Blue Marlin PEAK SEASON: April-September THE FISHING: If a giant marlin is on your bucket list, there may be no better place in the world to check it off than on the Kona Coast of Hawaii’s Big Island. On the southeastern end of a 1,500-mile archipelago in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, massive shield volcanoes protect the leeward side of the Big Island from wind and rain, resulting in nearly perpetual calm seas off the Kona Coast. Three miles from land, the bottom drops into 6,000-foot depths while winds and topography create miles-wide cyclonic eddies that funnel nutrient-rich water up into the warm surface layers. These localized patches of biologically productive water attract big pelagics. Within sight of land, there is the opportunity to catch six species of billfish, six species of tuna, ono (wahoo) and mahi-mahi, among others. The main drawing card is blue marlin… big ones. Kona lays claim to more than 80 blues heavier than 1,000 pounds over the years, and that doesn’t include all the granders that were released. More than half of all the granders ever recorded from the Hawaiian Islands were caught off the Kona Coast. INFORMATION: www.gohawaii.com

DESTINATION: Kamchatka, Russia FISH: Rainbow Trout PEAK SEASON: July-September THE FISHING: Some scientists believe the Kamchatka Peninsula is where rainbow trout originated in a web of cold-water rivers on Russia’s eastern coast. With very few roads and little human population to speak of, this roughly 100,000-square-mile slice of land across the Bering Sea from Alaska is as remote as it gets. In fact, the only feasible way to access its hundreds of miles of trout water is by helicopter. Kamchatka is a place that makes even the Alaskan tundra seem overpopulated with humans. It offers a wilderness experience unlike any other, and the fishing isn’t too shabby, either. Trout that eat dry flies, streamers and deer-hair mice skated across the surface average 20 to 22 inches. Each short season, anglers catch 30-inchers that are aggressive and as hot as they come. And while the rainbows are the headliners, there are also several species of Pacific salmon that make annual runs into the peninsula. Huge kundzha, a close relative of Dolly Varden, weigh into the teens. And trophy grayling round out a diverse fishery that’s one of the most unspoiled on the planet. INFORMATION: www.thebestofkamchatka.com

DESTINATION: Santee Cooper Lakes, South Carolina FISH: Striped Bass, Catfish, Largemouth Bass, Crappie, Shellcracker PEAK SEASON: Year-round THE FISHING: For a world-class freshwater fishery, the Santee Cooper lakes in South Carolina are as accessible as it gets. Interstate I-95 crosses Lake Marion and I-26 flanks the twin-lake system to the south. The lakes are connected by a 7-mile-long diversion canal, which provides another unique fishery. Lake Marion’s 102,400 acres of water are a timber-studded, aquatic vegetation-laden fish factory, while Lake Moultrie’s 59,900 acres have an incredible diversity of underwater cover and structure. This twin-lake system provides unmatched freshwater diversity. Marauding striped bass provide surface-schooling triple-digit catches per boat in peak season. The state record blue catfish was taken in 2017 and topped 113-pounds. Catfish in the 50- to 70-pound class are reasonable targets, and the big-fish population is on an upsurge. The system currently holds the world record channel catfish at 58-pounds. Need more? Crappies are abundant and commonly exceed 2 pounds, with 3-pound-plus fish distinctly possible. The system holds state records for black crappie at 5-pounds, largemouth bass topping 16-pounds and the former world record shellcracker that tipped the scales to 5 pounds, 7 1/2 ounces. Santee Cooper is the living legend of freshwater fishing. COASTALANGLERMAG.COM • THEANGLERMAG.COM I NOVEMBER 2018 I NATIONAL 9 INFORMATION: www.santeecoopercountry.org

ifteen years ago, a friend and I flew into San Jose and took a small plane to Quepos, Costa Rica, where we fished offshore on a 42 express boat called Fishing Frenzy. It was my first fishing trip to Costa Rica, and I didn’t know it at the time, but the over-the-top offshore experience was typical for this tropical Central American paradise. It consisted of plenty of tuna, sailfish and dorado, and the never-ending chase for marlin. The trip had such an impact that it became an annual event. Then, four years ago everything changed. I started some business dealings in Costa Rica, which allowed me to begin splitting time between Costa Rica and my native south Florida. It has been the adventure of a lifetime. I’m not sure I can say what specifically drew me to Costa Rica. I think it’s a little bit of everything. The people, the adventure, the fishing and the beautiful scenery are all truly amazing. The people are always happy and definitely live the national slogan “Pura Vida,” which translates to “The Pure Life.” The diversity and magnificence of the scenery is over the top. Delivering Coastal Angler Magazine throughout the country has exposed me to different and varying locations. Within a four hour drive I can be exposed to the volcanos and hot springs of Arenal, the gorgeous beaches and surfing of Guanacaste, the beautiful and exotic jungles of Golfito and the Osa Peninsula, the quiet beauty and fishing of the Nicoya Peninsula, the world class surfing and fishing of Herradura, Hermosa and Quepos, and even the cooler climates and cultural centers of the Central Valley. The tourism of Costa Rica is truly an adventure. From ziplining through a jungle canopy to four wheeling up a mountain, from white water rafting to rappelling down a waterfall, and even seeing sloths and monkeys in their natural habitats, the adventures are endless. Adventure definitely exists in the fishing of Costa Rica. In 2017 the Herradura Quepos fishery was named the No. 1 billfishing area in the world by the Billfish Report. Offshore fishing easily offers the complete line up of pelagic fish and often includes double-digit catches. This is one of the few countries where catching an offshore billfish grand slam can be accomplished in one day. Last month, Coastal Angler Editor-in-Chief Ben Martin came down and we managed to squeeze in one day of fishing on my 32 Luhrs, Dream II out of Los Suenos. Where else in the world can you catch two blue marlin, two sailfish, and 15 dorado in a day of fishing? The inshore fishing for roosterfish, cubera snapper, snook and even tarpon is also world class. The freshwater fishing offers everything from rainbow bass (guapote) to machaca, and trout to largemouth bass. I have been to many places in the world, and Costa Rica stands out as one of my favorite bucket list destinations. Mike Erickson is co-publisher of Coastal Angler Magazine Costa Rica.

t’s 2 p.m. on a bright, sunny day and I’m pitching pilchards in the shadow of a small bridge not 50 yards from a marina. As my bait turns and swims momentarily into the sunlight, a sudden swirl connects me to a solid slot-sized snook. My line has been in the water for less than a minute. “It can happen fast,” chuckled Capt. George Gozdz, who in 2019 is scheduled to host a new fishing show on The Sportsman Channel called Unfathomed. “There’s quality snook under almost any significant structure around here.” “Around here” would be the Indian River Lagoon (IRL) and St. Lucie River system, an estuarine wonderland on Florida’s southeast coast that stretches 155 miles and dishes up everything from monster snook, gator trout and delicious pompano to king-sized tarpon, jacks and a variety of grouper. The city of Stuart sits dead-center in this expansive maze of fishing heaven, and makes the perfect launch point Capt. George Gozdz shows off a monfor learning these waters. ster St. Lucie River snook. Look for “The diversity in this area is 8- to 10-foot depths with good current something special,” explained Gonear structure to find the big ones, he zdz, “Two systems converge here, said. Photo courtesy of George Gozdz. the St. Lucie River and Indian River, and St. Lucie Inlet provides access for ocean pelagics like sailfish. Inshore, snook is the most popular target on a year-round basis. From December through March, you’ll find the best action up inside the St. Lucie River because the water is warmest there. The stretch from Rt. A1A (aka: 10 Cent Bridge) west into the north or south fork of the St. Lucie River is the prime winter snook area. I throw Yo-Zuri Crystal Minnows and Hydro Poppers in low light conditions and pitch pilchards once the sun gets up in the sky.” Generally speaking, tidal stage doesn’t matter much for these snook, as long as the water is moving. Look for heavy structure near 10-foot depths with good flow and you’ll eventually connect. “Keep in mind this isn’t finesse fishing,” advised Gozdz. “There’s no way to haul a big snook— they can top 40 inches in length—out of heavy structure with light lines. I use 80-lb. test Yo-Zuri Super Braid with an 80- to 100-lb. test Top Knot fluorocarbon leader.” If you are looking to stay overnight in Stuart, Pirate’s Cove Resort and Marina (www.piratescoveresort.com; 772-287-2500) is a great choice with affordable rooms, wet slips and free launching around the corner at the Sandsprit Park. or a builder of the finest quality custom boats to survive in the competitive market of today, there can be no compromises. When precision craftsmanship meets thoughtful engineering and a flawless design, magic can happen. The magic comes with a hefty price, however, a price that isn’t measured in currency. For a boat builder to set the standard by which all others are measured, a tremendous amount of scrutiny from both the consumer as well as industry peers should be expected. There can be no short cuts, and each and every detail down to the last unseen screw must be perfect. This all requires a great deal of time. Man-hours. Very few people have the vision or sense of commitment to play at anything in their lives at this level. An enduring commitment to

maintain the highest standards at whatever cost has taken down many players in the boatbuilding game historically. Ultimately, they are all faced with the crossroads moment where either you pack up your tools and call it a day or form a plan to build it faster and cheaper, all in the interest of increasing that bottom line. For an elite few members of this profession, the boats have always come first. At the end of the day, if the integrity of their name or the boats that leave their shop are ever to be compromised, they’ve lost sight of the reason they got into the game. Pride. The team at Bahama Boat Works has devoted an entire lifetime to mastering every facet of the boating industry, compiling a list of credentials along the way that few can lay claim to. From running to rigging and designing to building, Bahama Boat Works has gained familiarity with every last detail of what makes a boat ride, run, look and fish better than all others. It takes these elements past the design stage to the construction stage and ultimately produces boats that draw admiration from everyone that lays eyes on them, boaters and non-boaters alike. The Bahama team has put in the man-hours. From base camp to spike camp to summit, the Bahama 41 has proven herself to be at the top of the food chain for years now. An Apex Predator staring down from the mountaintop ready to take on all challengers. As the entire Bahama Boat Works team prepares to put the landmark Hull #100 boat into service, a milestone that few custom boat builders ever get to enjoy, congratulations are certainly in order. Don’t, however, expect to find them putting their feet up or celebrating too enthusiastically. You are more likely to find them working out the smallest detail on the next hull in production. A detail that her future owner may never even know about but the team at Bahama and their pride wouldn’t consider overlooking.

grouper will find their way into shallower waters. Every year we catch some really nice gags in about 30- to 50-feet of water on some big ledges and structures. If you are after pelagics, use live baits for the best results. You can sabiki up some cigar minnows, Spanish sardines or blue runners. You can either slow troll the baits or flat line while you are anchored up bottom fishing. I would like to clarify to anyone who is wanting to fish and might be hesitant due to the red tide water conditions, once you get out past the red tide the fishing is outstanding, and there are no concerns of the safety of eating the fish. At the time of writing this, the red tide had cleared out almost completely. Try and keep using local businesses and help out those restaurants and businesses that are located on the water and nearby. There are many businesses that are struggling this season because of the lack of tourists. We all must stick together to get through this crisis. Remember to always follow state and federal regulations. Be courteous of other boaters, and keep only what you can eat.

ovember is the month where just about anything can happen in the Gulf of Mexico off south Florida. Offshore water temperatures will be slowly getting cooler and the baitfish will start migrating south. Along with the bait, comes a multitude of species following right behind them. Kingfish, blackfin tuna and cobia are my favorite fish to target in the fall. This year we will have to travel a little deeper than usual due to the red tide problem. Typically, I like to fish the beach area and out to around 50 feet of water for pelagics, but this season I am anticipating the bait will be out a little deeper in cooler waters. The red tide in our area has been out to almost 45 feet of water, depending on which way the wind is blowing that day. You have to find clean water to find the fish in these conditions. Bottom fish are always plentiful in November, as well. The gag

eef Runner Boats recently unveiled its new Battle Breast Cancer Boat, which will be raffled at the Miami International Boat Show in February to raise money for Susan G Komen for the Cure (SGK). This is the second year the Miami-based boat builder has raffled a brand new boat for the foundation, and Reef Runner owner Donna Milo said they hope to raise $20,000 with this year’s raffle. Since its founding in 1999, the Miami/Fort Lauderdale chapter of SGK has invested nearly $11 million in local breast cancer awareness projects, such as education programs, funding for patient screening, diagnostics and treatment. The chapter also donates 25 percent of remaining net funds to national breast cancer research programs. Reef Runner is ponying up a pretty sweet ride to the cause. It is a Reef Runner 180 Bay—an 18-foot, wide-beamed boat that is perfect for fishing and family cruising. It has a fuel-efficient hull design, lots of storage and a roomy, fully finished interior liner. The boat also has a 90-horsepower Evinrude outboard motor. TACO Marine also jumped on board with cause by donating and installing brand new Rigid Vinyl Rub Rail, end caps, navigation lights and poly tumbler holders for the Battle Breast Cancer Boat. The boat will be raffled on the final day of the Miami International Boat Show, Monday, Feb. 18, 2019 at 1 p.m. Raffle tickets are on sale Airline_Ad_CoastalAngler_8-1-14_Layout 1 8/1/14 1:14 PM Page 1 online at reefrunnerboats.com. THE SUMMER OF FREEDOM BY: FORREST CHAPMAN

T

hey say the two happiest days of a boat owner are the day they buy it and the day they sell it. That was certainly the case for me two years ago. I bought it with dreams of cruising the Gulf of Mexico, and then happy to finally be rid of a money pit that I hardly had the change to use. Then I discovered a new freedom…Freedom Boat Club. I joined Freedom Boat Club as an experiment at first, to see if all the benefits that were explained to me were worth the price of membership. But once on board, I found that Freedom Boat Club really worked for my lifestyle and boating needs. I was not only able to take out boats where I live, but now had the option to take out a boat anywhere in the U.S. After the Miami Boat Show, friends and I spent a week in Marathon Key. We were able to make a

reservation with Freedom Boat Club, taking out a boat from the club located in Islamorada for a beautiful day of fishing. The second opportunity came during the past Tampa Boat Show. Our group had some free time, and we were able to get out on the water by taking out a boat from one of the locations near St. Petersburg. And recently, in Biloxi, the weather was so nice, so I contacted the Freedom Boat Club there and had a boat to use for a beautiful ride out in the Gulf. The variety of boats is also a real benefit. I like to fish, and Freedom offers center console fishing boats to fish both inshore and offshore. If a day at the beach or a relaxing cruise is more your style, then a nice selection of pontoon and deck boats are available. My business partner had family coming to Pensacola, and it sure was nice to be able to take

one group out on a large pontoon boat to cruise the beach and then two days later take another group out fishing. Of course, the Best Part of the whole package, is docking the boat at the end of the day and letting the very courteous and professional staff take care of the cleaning, maintenance, storage and all the other hassle of boat ownership. It sure feels good to take out what feels like “Your Boat”, pay for the gas your used, and then just go home after a beautiful day on the water. If this sounds like a boating lifestyle that fits your needs, then please call Membership Director: Morris Hines (850) 324-0175, or any of the Freedom Boat Club numbers in the ad on the previous page.

ell, Halloween is behind us and the first true cold fronts of the season are pushing through and the fishing is getting hot! The water

temps are finally dropping, and it feels like fall. Fishing wise, October was similar to September, fish were all over the lower bay area. The fish are now finally making their migration north into the marsh and tidal rivers around Mobile Bay, Portersville Bay, and Heron Bay including Fowl River, Bayou La Batre and Grand Bay where they will winter. The fish will stay in the deeper parts of these rivers early and as the day warms up they will move out to the flats and school up around the oyster beds. Fish with live shrimp, as long as you can find them, under a popping cork. Move around, look for fish slicks (the glassy areas on top of the water) and look for birds working and diving; The birds are a dead giveaway. There will be fish under them eating the shrimp and rain or glass minnows just like the birds. Ease up as you approach the birds and the school, turn the big motor off get on your trolling motor or simply

drift around the school. Don’t go charging into the flock, you will spook the fish. Be stealthy and quiet. Remain calm, fish on! When you find these birds, you can throw shrimp imitations like Vudu shrimp, fin fish imitations like Matrix shad and Beetle spins or even the old faithful live shrimp. Hard baits like the Yozuri 3DS Minnow will work well too. Redfish will be mixed in here as well and will eat up a live shrimp tossed to them over and around the oyster beds. Check the points where the smaller tidal rivers dump into the larger rivers for nice flounder mixed in with the trout and reds as well. The white trout will remain around structure in the Bay and Sound too. They will hit dead shrimp and live shrimp and all the shrimp imitations. Have fun and stay warm! We are still booking trips through these cooler months, so call us and let’s go catching, not just casting, it’s what we do! Check us out on the website or contact me. ooler temperatures mean cooler waters and fall fishing should be heating up. I like being able to cover all the water columns so I’m always ready with several rods rigged up when I hit the water. Starting off with topwaters usually being a skitterwalk or spook jr depending on the wind. Then for my mid-range in the shallows I like throwing ripstop or shad rap shad. Both do well producing reds and trout. Soft plastics and cover all ranges depending on how you rig them. I usually use a ¼ to 1/8 oz. jig head flutter bouncing them off the bottom. Bull reds should be gathering in passes and off the bar. I like using 6” curly tail on a jig head or a surface popper for some fun. These

large schools of bulls make it easy to sight cast when they are swimming through. Not to miss in November. Nov.2nd is the 7th annual Spankn the Specks in Gulfport, MS. This is a 3-speckled trout stringer tournament with honors going to the top 3 anglers. There are also awards for largest red and flounder. Its only $40 to enter and you can sign up at www. everythingkayak.com or at the store Everything Kayak 15240 Creosote RD. Gulfport, MS. We keep a running tab of all the happenings in the kayak community on our Facebook page Kayak Fishing U. Remember while fishing from a kayak to always think safety. We are low to the water and not always easily seen. Keep a 360-degree light on at dark and low light conditions, wear a PFD, keep hydrated, and let someone know your float plan. NIGHT FISHING BY: RICH ELLISON

M

obile Bay is full of juvenile redfish! If you want to bend your rod, head to your nearest dock light and hold on. The days are getting cooler & shorter, as such the fish are responding accordingly. I was able to fish before and after Hurricane Michael, and he had zero effect on the bay. If anything the huge tide cycle cleaned things up a bit and produced a better bite. We really dodged a bullet with this storm, but we hope for a speedy recovery for our neighbors to the east. I have been experimenting with different baits, just looking for more options. At night it really doesn’t matter all that much. I have said for years I should try a Beetle Spin. I got one cast out of mine before a hungry drum smashed the bait and destroyed the wire. I decided to try Fish Bites Fight Club. I was hoping they would hold up

better than my GULP! Swimming Mullet. They did, but marginally so. The paddle tail seems to have very little action to it. Fish hit the darting white object; good enough for me! I have taken a real liking to Bass Assassin jig heads. The way the jigs are ribbed really hold those soft body lures better than other jig heads. I have zero sponsorship from any of these companies, this is just a peak into my tackle box. I took my friend Casey fishing recently and we had a fine time. The bay produced mostly pup reds, but we did both catch our legal limit. I managed a small trout and Casey landed a stud 3.2# Southern Flounder; we pulled off the inshore slam between the two of us. The highlight of the night came in a most unusual way. I released a small redfish that I hoped would live, but feared was too deeply hooked. The very next cast, Casey caught that same fish! I had an equally bizarre experience last week when I landed a good red. While I was unhooking him on my lap, he was trying to eat the glass minnows leaping from his jaws! Red drum may be the sturdiest fish our Creator ever made! I recently purchased a new Hobie Outback from Fairhope Boat Company. The 2019 model is outstanding! I am really enjoying the square hatch and the large rear space. I did learn the hard way that it will not turn as quickly as previous model Outbacks. When fishing dock lights, sometimes the fish will pull you around, and I had the hardest time staying off the pilings in this fine

new boat! I even lost a rod that got hung up in the wooden planks above, while a bull red drug me around against my will! Luckily my friend Casey was able to fish it from the bay floor. This boat is equipped with reverse on the Mirage Drive. It works smoothly & given my experience, is a necessity. Hobie has really outdone themselves with this boat. I recently sold my 2016 model. I enjoyed fishing from it, but was disappointed largely. It was just like my 2012, except for a much upgraded seat. The 2019 Outback has set the bar very high, but there are many good boats out there. The competition is what inspired these much needed upgrades. Whatever vessel you choose, make sure it fits your personality. I’m loyal to Hobie because these little boats got me on the water when I couldn’t afford very much boat. I continue to fish from them because I love the simplicity of throwing a plastic boat in the water and catching dinner. The fishing should continue to steadily improve, be sure to take advantage of it. Winter will be here before you know it! Rich Ellison Outback Fishing Adventures 251-223-7085

ovember is the time to be fishing on the causeway. Specs, reds, and flounder were biting in October. I’ve caught some nice reds on the causeway with High Tide plastics on jig head while looking for specs in the rivers on the causeway. Water temps are in the low 70’s and each cold front will have water temps into the 60’s soon. Things will be hot by the time November gets here. A few more cold fronts are just what we need. If you’re looking for specs, look in the rivers north of the causeway. I drift the falling tide with soft plastics on 3/8 oz jig heads. Try depths around 12 feet and just drift in the current bouncing grubs along the bottom. I like High Tide plastics and jig heads in chartreuse/ red, root beer/chartreuse, white/ chartreuse, and purple/chartreuse. If you want to throw top water this is the time but my favorite Mirrolure is the suspending lures like the Catch 2000 or Catch Jr. Hit the points and flats about three feet deep along the rivers. I prefer the points that face up current. A live shrimp under a popping cork will

’s Mobile ha Yama ONLY ter Mas ian Technic

also be a good bet. Flounder can be found on the points and flats on the rivers in the delta where the trout are feeding. Soft plastics on jig heads or a bull minnow on a carolina rig are my choices for the flat fish. This time of year, I catch more flounder looking for specs on points than any other time of the year. If you’re after reds try the deep channels in the delta. Try places like north pass, turtle ditch, the canyon, and along the rivers where small creeks run into them. Reds will hit the same baits that specs will, but my favorite is a Hildebrandt Spinner bait. I like a 4 ½ size gold blade Snagless Sally to get their attention. A live or dead shrimp on a carolina rig will get the deed done as well. It’s November, so get out while the getting’ is good. It may last into December, but if it doesn’t you’ll be sorry you missed out on the best fishing the causeway has to offer.

DIVING REPORT SNORKELING REEFS

BY: KEVIN FREELAND / DIVE PROS

B

efore sitting down to write this article I took a gander at this coming weekend’s forecast, it reads more like the mean height of a high school population than a sea state I want to be out on. This simple fact has me thinking where else we may be able to dive this weekend. Truth be told, we look at these alternative locations all the time. Divers just having received their certification, those reentering the sport after a lull, and those who cannot afford a boat every weekend need to be aware of the other opportunities available to them. This is a very exciting time for us on the Western Emerald Coast, with the recent addition of snorkeling reefs within an hour drive out of Pensacola. The three Alabama reef sites consist of 116 reef modules in total and are accessible

approximately 500 feet from shore. These reefs, along with those already established in both Escambia County and Santa Rosa County, provide fruitful opportunities for scuba diving and snorkeling from our region’s shores. Not that long ago the only places we had to watch the wonders of the sea were at some jetties, under bridges, and a few scattered wrecks. These were often dangerous undertakings with the currents and other hazards added to just plain old swimming in the ocean. The new reefs will allow us to interact with our finned fiends, and expand options we have to account for the environmental conditions. The pioneering work done to establish the snorkeling reefs in Escambia County is paying off, and there are more reefs on the way! Current

plans are to put another Gulf side reef at the core of Pensacola Beach, giving us additional sites where the sea turtles seem to just hang out all summer. As well, there are plans to build near shore reefs accessible by paddle craft. Neighboring counties have witnessed the benefits and are developing similar reefs. Adding these new reef sites to some very active dive club’s social media scene, there are few reasons to miss a weekend of diving or snorkeling on the Western Emerald Coast! 3rd Coast Divers Dive Club, sponsored by Dive Pros, has hosted beach dives at these incredible artificial reefs almost weekend since spring. 3rd Coast Divers is a highly active club that hosts, beach dives, night dives, boat dives and has monthly speakers who are experts in their field. Go to 3rd Coast Divers on Facebook to be part of current and upcoming events. Membership is free, hope to see you there! OFFSHORE REPORT BY: CAPT. DON MCPHERSON

O

ctober was unusually warm and many anglers enjoyed fishing off the Alabama Gulf Coast this past month. For those anglers who enjoy fishing in the fall, then November is a great month. You just need to fish between the cold fronts. Fishing along the shoreline within a couple of miles can be enjoyable and productive as the typical north wind blows but is blocked by land and buildings in November. Spanish mackerel and king mackerel can usually be caught by trolling spoons and dusters behind #2 planers. Bull redfish can also be caught by trolling and casting jigs into a school. Offshore bottom fishing should continue to be good with vermillion snapper, white snapper, scamp grouper, red grouper and gag grouper. Amberjack, red snapper and triggerfish will be closed. Make plans now and lets go fishing! Capt. Don McPherson 251-752-0235 Getaway Charters www.getawaycharters.com

ORANGE BEACH BY: CAPT. JOHNNY WILLIS

W

ith falling temperatures, the fishing has been fantastic! Schools of trout are being found along grass flats and around piers and other structures in 3-5 ft of water, and flounder are becoming ever more common as this cool weather is rolling in! Also, with this change of weather with water temps dropping we will start to see this wonderful bull redfish run we have annually as more and more redfish make their way down the beach and into Pensacola Bay and Perdido Bay. With this time of the year, we will well as well find large amounts of bait with crashing birds which often contain the big red fish or jack crevalle. When searching for trout and slot redfish a Mattix Soft Plastic and a quarter ounce jig head is always a good starting point when fan casting to cover ground. When you run into the big schools of redfish and jack crevalle we start to see around the end of this month a 1 1/2oz Spro buck tail jig with a 18” long forty pound monofilament leader will do the trick, along with a Hoagie 2oz swim bait using dark colors with low sun light and brighter colors as the sun begins to shine! Once the sun is

up the shallow sand bars just off the beach are a fantastic place to sight fish big red fish, pompano, jack crevalle, skipjack and loads of other fish as they move down the beaches. As usual we wish you the best from Lost Bay Guide Service!

UNDER THE SEA – PREVENTING A DIVER NIGHTMARE BY: SHERI DAYE

A

fter several years of traveling for work, I had enough frequent flyer miles to take my family to Australia to dive on the Great Barrier Reef. After returning home, we heard on the news that two Americans had accidentally been left at sea by the same dive operator we had chartered. The crew miscounted when tracking divers, and by the time the search began, they most likely suffered a slow, agonizing death. That nightmare incident was portrayed in a Hollywood movie. Unfortunately, these “left-atsea” stories are not uncommon. Boats can become incapacitated; divers can get caught in a current; the possibilities are endless. According to U.S. Coast Guard rescue swimmers, the key to getting rescued is to make yourself visible. A whistle or Dive Alert air horn might be enough to catch the attention of your boat if it is nearby. If lost, it helps if you are wearing a brightly colored wetsuit hood or deploy a brightly colored safety sausage. Even better, you can carry signaling devices such as flares, a mirror (requires the sun), or glow sticks (at night). A small LED dive flashlight or strobe can be seen from afar— especially if the USCG is searching with night vision goggles. PLBs (Personal Locator Beacons) on the market today are small, waterproof devices designed to alert search and rescue services of your location anywhere in the world. When activated, it transmits a message on the 406 MHz distress frequency which is monitored by the COSPAS-

SARSAT satellite system. The alert is relayed to the nearest Rescue Coordination Center. Once in the area, rescue services pinpoint your location using 121.5 MHz homing transmitters. Unlike EPIRBs, which are registered to a specific vessel, a PLB is registered to a person and can be carried wherever you go. Before my trip, I bought an ACR ResQLink PLB from Bass Pro for $249. It can be used on land or sea, but divers need to know that taking it deeper than 5 meters could cause the device to activate due to pressure changes, so it should either be secured to a flag float on the surface or stored in a dive canister if taken underwater. The increased peace of mind was well worth the price. There are several similar products on the market. The Ocean Signal rescueME PLB1 operates in a similar manner. Nautilus Lifeline makes a “Marine Rescue GPS” which broadcasts a distress message to all AIS equipped ships up to 34 miles away and to the marine radio on your own vessel. The ultimate survival tool is your ability to keep calm and maintain a positive attitude while taking action to make yourself visible. Prepare ahead of time, and your chances of rescue are very good. Safe diving! Sheri Daye is a world-record holder, host of Speargun Hunter, and producer of “The Blue Wild Ocean Adventure Expo” in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. LAKE MARTIN

U

nfortunately, while I’m writing this on 10/11/18 I’m watching television showing results of Hurricane Michael. Very sad and I just want everyone affected that our heartfelt prayers go out to you. November is known to be the start of an awesome fishing season here on Lake Martin. I love this time of year, it produces some of the nicest weather and the stripers are starting to group together in large numbers on the lake and some will be in the creeks along with some in the river channel. You shouldn’t have to search for very long before you start marking huge balls of baitfish which in turn will have a lot of stripers close by. When your prepping your fishing gear for November fishing you want to make sure you have the following tied on, Redfins, buck tail jigs, swim baits, jigging spoons and my favorite the well-known Rapala Shad Rap. I will be running live bait trips but do not think I want have any and all of the above artificial lures in my reach for whatever it takes to put multiple stripers in the boat. Don’t forget to start purchasing your Alex City Guide Service Gift Certificates for that special person or persons in your life. Happy Thanksgiving to everyone and we’ll see you on the water! Capt. FISH & FISHING

MARK SOSIN

I

t took me awhile to realize it. Early in my career, my goal was to fish for as many different species as possible in freshwater and salt. That meant traveling from the Arctic (Alaska, Greenland and Iceland) to the tip of South America (Chile and Argentina) and everywhere in between. Travel also took me to Europe and Africa. I fished Scotland for salmon, the Cuanza River in Angola for husky tarpon, and interior waters in central Africa for tigerfish. Add to that probing the Amazon and its tributaries for peacock bass and other species. My passion for travel took me to countless countries in pursuit of various species. Sometimes, I would be one of very few Americans who fished remote waters in one land or another. And, it should be noted that I visited all 50 states and fished in many of them for a wide variety of species. When I started in the outdoor business, the late Joe Brooks told me to fish for as many species as possible everywhere in the world. I took his advice. As the years rolled by, people began to ask where my favorite place to fish was. Coming up with an answer wasn’t easy. After considerable thought and deliberation, I decided that if I had to fish only one place, my choice would be Miami, Fla. Let me tell you why. It’s easy to reach by plane, car or train. You can stay in a five star hotel (if that’s your choice) rather than some broken-down cabin in the wilderness. And you also have an incredible choice of restaurants. Biscayne Bay lies at Miami’s doorstep. Among dozens of species, you can focus on bonefish, permit and tarpon on the shallow flats. Government Cut is the main shipping channel leading from the bay to the Atlantic. Just a few miles offshore, the Gulf Stream flows northward carrying warm water that attracts many species of fish. I should point out that right inside the cut you can catch snook and other denizens. Sailfish are a prime target along the Gulf Stream, with an occasional blue marlin surprising anglers. There are also swordfish. Dolphin are plentiful along with tuna, wahoo, kingfish, bonito and many other species. A coral reef plus various submerged wrecks provide a home

for grouper, snapper and other bottom dwellers, and it’s not unusual to find cobia. If redfish is your primary target, it’s a reasonably short drive to Flamingo in Everglades National Park, where the shallows host a large population of reds. Several other species make these waters their home including sharks, tarpon and other critters. I even caught a sawfish in this area once. The Florida Keys really begin in Miami, and it’s an easy drive to Key Largo and beyond. The Overseas Highway has been vastly improved, giving you access to excellent fishing waters. It’s difficult to find a place anywhere in the world that provides an angler an outstanding opportunity to enjoy fishing for some of the greatest gamefish. That’s why Miami holds the title of My Favorite Fishing Hole.

ooking for a vacation destination to take the whole family—a place where you can enjoy nature together and pluck dinner from the ocean and have it cooked that night? Look no farther than the Bahamas. Just a short plane or boat ride from Florida, the Commonwealth of The Bahamas consists of more than 700 islands, cays and islets set in crystal clear water. When it comes to diving, it’s hard to find a more beautiful place with such an abundance of sea life. The warm, clear water and shallow depths make it a diver’s paradise, suitable for beginners and advanced alike. Whether you’re interested in sightseeing on scuba, hunting while freediving or simply snorkeling, everyone is sure to have a good time. Very young divers can snorkel on the surface and are likely to see fish, turtles, stingrays and more. If you’re an underwater hunter, there’s no better place to find a large variety of delicious fish within easy freediving depths. Hogfish, snapper and grouper, as well as conch and lobster, can be found on the beautiful reef formations. It’s no accident that The Bahamas boasts some of the best spearfishing grounds in the world. It was the first country to establish a Land and Sea Park to protect the reefs. Spearfishing is only allowed while freediving and by use of slings or polespears. No scuba or spearguns are allowed. As opposed to being a deterrent, the regulations have made slinging and polespearing a fun and popular trend. While some might consider it a challenge, the clear shallow

water and abundance of fish work in your favor, and no one goes hungry in the Bahamas! Regulations allow conchs and lobsters (during open season), as well as 20 scale fish like groupers and snappers. That’s more than enough to feed a large family. Always double check for the latest regulations, as these may change. If you are hunting, you will want to charter an experienced captain, such as Capt. Luke Maillis with Reel Addictive Charters out of Long Island or Capt. Jesse Leopold with Andros Beach Club out of South Andros Island. If you’re not into hunting—no worries. You can scuba or snorkel on one of the many guided sightseeing charters, which will take you to swim with sharks, dolphins and/or stingrays. There’s Big Game Club Scuba Center or Bimini Undersea out of Bimini, UNEXSO in Freeport, and Stuart Cove’s in Nassau. There’s also AllStar Liveaboards, which offer 4- to 7-day trip packages. At the end of the day, there’s nothing more satisfying than gathering over a meal and talking about your underwater experience. If you picked up seafood along the way, there are many restaurants on the islands that will be happy to cook your catch. This is the type vacation that’s sure to generate fond memories that last a lifetime. There’s a reason they say, “It’s better in the Bahamas.” Check it out and find out why! hen Bob Sundstrom, of Odin Lure Company, created his Oozzie Jig in 2011, he knew right away it was something special. It worked wonders on the New Hampshire coast for cod, haddock and stripers, and he patented his new technology that allows hard baits to disperse a steady stream of fish-attracting scent. Odin Lure Company is the evolution of that design. With its line of topwater poppers and jerkbaits, Odin handcrafts high-quality lures that appeal to all a fish’s senses to draw strikes. From largemouth bass to tuna, anything that will hit a plug will slam Odin’s FRIGG lures. And with the added attraction of a scent trail, FRIGGs are proven on the water to out-catch other lures. “We’ve all had fish follow a lure right to the boat,” Sundstrom said. “You caught that fish’s curiosity through sight and sound, but you haven’t convinced the fish that it’s looking at something to eat.” That’s where the scent system comes into play. For many species, scent is the most important sense utilized in targeting prey. FRIGG

lures use sight, sound and smell to convince even the wariest fish to feed. An empty FRIGG will draw strikes as well as any lure out there, but it’s almost unfair to the fish when injected with a scent product called Fish Smack. Fish Smack was formulated by Bioedge specifically for use with Odin lures. It is a 100 percent natural extract of the oils, enzymes and amino acids from baitfish. It has the viscosity of grease, which makes it uniquely designed for Odin’s “bait chamber.” On retrieve, water pushes through a rubber membrane on the front of the lure and past the Fish Smack in the bait chamber. Scented water exits through laceration points designed to look like gill slits on the lure’s sides. FRIGG lures leave a scented bubble trail that adds an element of realism and triggers strikes. On top of that, the residual baitfish scent in the water acts like chum to attract fish and spur feeding activity. A single injection of Fish Smack will keep the lure “hot” through more than an hour of casts and retrieves. And FRIGGs are remarkably versatile on the retrieve. A concave face gives the seductive wobbling and walking action of a stunned baitfish. When slowed down, the popper’s loud pops, bubbles and gurgles are like ringing the dinner bell. Largemouth, pike, tarpon, redfish, snook, trout, mahi-mahi and tuna are just a few species Odin’s FRIGG poppers and jerkbaits have caught in testing. There are sizes and colors to match whatever fishing you do. Fish Smack also matches the hatch with several different “flavors”— from herring to squid—that appeal to your targeted game fish. All Odin lures are made in the U.S.A. of high quality materials and extra-strong components. Sundstrom hand paints them himself in Odin’s New Hampshire facility, which means he personally oversees the quality of each lure produced. For more information on Odin Lure Company’s revolutionary new lures, see odinlures.com.

laska, the last frontier, is truly a remarkable destination that every angler should experience. Believe it or not, river fishing in Alaska can be done easily without a guide. I like to call it a “do-it-yourself destination.” The famous Kenai Peninsula is a place I have traveled to for several amazing fishing trips. The beautiful scenery in this area alone is worth the trip, and the number of close encounters with wild bull moose, bears, elk, bald eagles, etc. were truly amazing. While there, I find myself not wanting to sleep, since the summer days are never ending and the fishing is usually catching! My last trip to the fabled Kenai River was a last-minute journey

20

I

that proved to be one of my most amazing trips to the peninsula. It was mid-July, and I had been watching the salmon counts and monitoring the run charts for a few weeks. This was going to be my first attempt at catching the larger second run of sockeye salmon. Reports told of massive schools in Cook Inlet that were moving toward the river mouth. Predictions of a record season were starting to fill the nets of the commercial fishermen. As they started to near the river mouth in the town of Kenai, estimates of their arrival at my anticipated ambush point in the small town of Soldotna began to filter in. It was now time to break the news to my wife of this last-minute fishing trip from Texas to Alaska. Fortunately, she understands my passion for the sport and was in full support. The facts that sockeye is her favorite fish to eat and that I had a free airline ticket didn’t hurt. Four days later, the salmon and I hit the banks of the Kenai River in downtown Soldotna. Not only was its perfect timing for the arrival of these large acrobatic fighters, Alaska also increased the limit from three salmon per day to six. Jackpot! For some reason, the crowds were also lighter than what I had witnessed on previous trips. I was not complaining. I was fortunate to harvest my limit each day. With easy limits of salmon in the morning, I found time to head to the Russian River for some rainbow trout on the fly. This is where I had a 15-foot encounter with a momma bear and her two cubs. Fortunately, she didn’t feel threatened as the cubs were crossing the river on a fallen tree. She glanced at me, then to her cubs, back at me, and proceeded to follow her cubs across the river. I will never forget the sheer awe of that experience. A visit to Kenai Peninsula would not be complete without a hike to view Exit Glacier and the Harding Icefields. I have made this hike three times, and if I ever return I will definitely do it again. Capt. Michael Okruhlik is the inventor of Controlled Descent Lures and the owner of www.MyCoastOutdoors.com.

FLY FISHING

Redfish & Tarpon NOW!

T

here may be no better saltwater fish to take on the fly than the tarpon. Hard fighting, high jumping and beauty make this gamefish the holy grail of saltwater fly fishing. However, targeting tarpon on the fly might seem a little intimidating to some. The thought of making a 60-foot cast in a 15-knot wind and presenting a fly to a fish pushing 100 pounds keeps some anglers from venturing onto the flats. Anyone looking to tangle with a tarpon on the fly should first get their chops down by targeting baby tarpon. There is no better year-round fly fishing destination for baby tarpon than the Yucatan Peninsula. Campeche My first experience with Yucatan baby tarpon was the in the Campeche area. The city of Campeche is a wonderful colonial community nestled along the mangrove-lined coast six hours west of Cancun. The city has spec-

t a r p on t o grow up to 40 pounds. Anglers make casts to large schools of rolling tarpon over shallow eel grass flats early in the morning and late in the afternoon. The town of San Felipe is quaint and offers some of the best local seafood in the Yucatan. Rods, Reels And Tackle The tackle set up for Yucatan tarpon is simple. I carry two rigs. The workhorse is a 9-foot, 8-weight rod matched with a large arbor reel that can hold 200 yards of 20- or 30-pound backing. I fish a saltwater taper floating line. The second set up is a 9-foot, 9-weight rod and reel matched with a 30-foot intermediate sink tip and a shorter leader of 7 to 9 feet. This outfit works great subsurface. Leaders

tacular views of the ocean, and the town square is highlighted by an amazing cathedral that towers over the city. The fishing is just as spectacular! Within a short panga ride from your hotel, you can cast flies to rolling tarpon on the open-water flats. Tarpon here are accommodating, often hitting poppers or a well-placed subsurface fly. Once hooked, baby tarpon put on a spectacular show, burning fly line off reels and making their trademark jumps.

Flies My favorite flies for baby tarpon are size 2 Gurglers and Toad patterns. Both these flies will cover any situation you may encounter. My go-to colors are red/ black, chartreuse/white and purple/black. If you’re looking for that first-time tarpon destination and want lots of great sight fishing action, book your trip to the Yucatan peninsula ASAP!

Baby tarpon can be spooky, so keep the fly line out of the tarpon’s field of vision, especially in calm conditions. I suggest a 10- to 12foot leader of 20-pound test with a floating line. You’ll also need a short 40-pound bite tippet.
