Overstruck on a Syracusan JE of Hieron II (Crawford O / S 23), with a portion of the trident and a dolphin visible above Roma's head. Interesting. ($100) The Goodman Collection.

Even though the grain ear is not present on this specimen, stylistic similarities with the grain ear issue clearly indicate that this coin is part of that issue. In particular, note the line of dots under the brim of the petasos. For some reason, the grain ear was simply not engraved onto the die.
