The opening of the Visitor Center in 2021 brought new opportunities for local artists & businesses to be featured year-round at our location near the ferry landing at 22 El Portal.
Our small population of 7,500 hosts thousands of visitors throughout the year. We are situated near the northern end of the Golden Gate Bridge, 6 miles from San Francisco and only an hour north to Wine Country. We welcome visitors to “Stay in Sausalito and Visit San Francisco.” We have something for everyone from our unique artist community and world class restaurants to kayaking and sailing on the Bay or a walk-through Muir Woods National Park for a little peace & tranquility.

Sausalito is California’s version of Portofino, Italy, with its small village feel and wonderful Bay views. We welcome you to enjoy our little slice of Italy during the off season from October – March and avoid the crowds, but if you must, we welcome you any time of the year.

Some come via the short ferry ride . Others choose to take an adventurous bicycle ride over the Golden Gate Bridge, spend the day and take the ferry back to San Francisco . Travelers spend the night at one of our cozy hotels, linger over breakfast or lunch at one of the many restaurants overlooking the bay and spend the day wandering our quaint little town . Whether visiting for two hours or two days, you’ll find fun shopping, delicious dining and scenery that will simply take your breath away . Read on for our tips on what to see and do in our little stretch of paradise .
Two Hours
• Walk south along Bridgeway from the center of town for scenic photographs, fresh air and exercise. Take in all the sights and sounds – the seals frolicking in the bay (including the famous sea lion statue), the SF Skyline as well as the Mediterranean hillside above the waterfront.
• Go as far as Swedes Beach via the wooden boardwalk and see the legendary Sally Stanford’s former establishment on the southernmost corner.
• Walk back to town and browse through art galleries and boutiques, including the hidden courtyard on Princess Street.
• The Sausalito Visitor Center on El Portal right in the center of town will give you a taste of Sausalito & Marin’s amazing artists and crafts persons, featuring handmade & locally designed gifts from jewelry to watercolor paintings and everything in between.
• Have lunch at one of the waterfront restaurants with spectacular views, such as Barrel House Tavern, The Trident, Salito’s Crab House & Prime Rib, Scoma’s, Seafood Peddler or The Spinnaker Restaurant just to name a few.
• Walk off your lunch by strolling along the marinas and boardwalks and admire the harbors full of boats.
• Head back to San Francisco via the ferry or drive north to Muir Woods.
• Sausalito is the perfect gateway to west Marin County and the California coastline as well as the wonders of the wine country.

• From the center of town- across from Vina del Mar Park where the elephants stand guard over the beautiful fountain- walk up the Excelsior stairs for a panoramic view of the harbor and the bay.
• If you want to go where the locals shop then Caledonia Street is where you want to be, this little neighborhood street boosts galleries, boutiques, vintage and jewelry designers that cannot be found anywhere else.
• Catch an espresso or cappuccino at one of the sidewalk cafes in the area and watch the world go by while you catch your breath.
• Wander back towards the center of town and sample some fine California wine at one of our wine tasting establishmentsBacchus & Venus and Real Napa or sample a little vodka and admire some art at Hanson’s Gallery & Vodka Tasting.

Sausalito Visitor Center a Vision in the Making
The Sausalito Chamber of Commerce and Visitor Center is an exploration in Sausalito art and small businesses. The 2000 sq. ft. Visitor Center features 25 – 30 local artists and small businesses giving thousands of locals & visitors a chance to enjoy and purchase a piece of local art. Many of our artists do not have their own galleries or places to showcase their work, so the Visitor Center provides a perfect spot, located near the ferry landing in the middle of downtown. Mediums include oil and acrylics, pottery, photography, watercolor, jewelry, turned wood pieces, and even a few vintage & antique pieces. The chambers’ vision was to bring our artists closer to the general public where they can see, touch & enjoy. Sausalito has a rich history as an artist community and what better way to keep art in the fore front.

Floating Homes - A Walk through History
A block or two down Bridgeway from Hanson’s, you will find Burlwood Gallery, as you walk into the gallery the sparkle and light will make you feel like you are in a room of diamonds. Swarovski, fine jewelry and wall décor from around the world can be found in this family run gallery.
Waterfront living goes as far back as the 1880s, when colonies of “arks” existed off Belvedere and on the creeks of Larkspur. Arched roofs, sliding doors and decks fore and aft were hallmarks of ark design. Used chiefly as warm weather recreational boats in various quiet waterways, they were called arks – as opposed to houseboats — because they were designed to float on the bay waters at high tide and to sit on the mud flats at low tide. They were also pulled ashore during the winter. After the earthquake and fire of 1906, many arks were adapted for full-time residential use by families left homeless.
Shortly after California achieved statehood in 1850, Richardson’s Bay had been subdivided into underwater lots to create a West Coast Venice with canals and city streets. When the idea failed to materialize, the state sold the tideland lots into private ownership, but retained title to a number of the “underwater streets”. If you see what looks like a vacant berth, it’s most likely one of those mythical streets.
A walk along the docks will bring you peace, highlight the artistic talent of the floating home-owners and give you many photo opportunities. The Sausalito floating home community is a magical place.

ICB Artists Sausalito
The landmark ICB (Industrial Center Building), located in Sausalito’s historic Marinship District, was built in 1942 as part of a large shipyard complex during WWII. Formerly known as the “Mold Loft”, the ICB is where templates and mock-ups were made in order to fabricate the raw steel for the workhorse Liberty Ships. At the start of the 1950s, artists became attracted to its big open spaces, natural light and cheap rents. Today, this three story historic structure is a working studio to more than 100 artists. Many
of their pieces are exhibited locally and some even internationally. Since 1968, the ICB artists have always welcomed the public to come into their working studios during the Winter Open Studios event held during the first weekend in December. Anyone can have the opportunity to meet the artists and talk to them about their unique creative processes and their artwork. Many of the artists make commissioned work and some even offer to teach privately or in a workshop setting, a great team building activity for groups or corporations.

Poggio is a classic Italian trattoria with comfortable neighborhood charm and destination-caliber cuisine. Executive Chef Benjamin Balesteri sources local ingredients from the best purveyors and highlights these quality products in the daily changing menu. Chef Balesteri sources a menu that features soulful classics of Northern Italy, including a variety of antipasti, house-made pasta, spit roasted meats,
and wood-fired pizzas. He often catches the fresh fish served at Poggio with daily specials that include line-caught local salmon, tuna, and halibut. The notable wine list emphasizes vintages from Italy and Northern California, along with a unique selection of hardto-find vintages of some of the most sought after varietals in the world. Open seven days a week, they offer breakfast, lunch and dinner, a full bar, and ample private dining rooms for special celebrations. In 2022, Poggio was voted best Italian Restaurant in Marin Magazine’s Best of the County. The restaurant will celebrate its 20th anniversary in 2023.
Sandrino is home to a husband and wife team who moved to Sausalito from the Veneto and Trentino-Alto Adige regions of Italy. Although Smitty’s doesn’t feature a happy hour menu, as far as dive bars go this is as good as it gets. Cold beers on tap, pool tables, darts, shuffleboard, 7 HD TVs… what more could you want? If you want to go where the locals hang out, Smitty’s on Caledonia is a step back in time.

Sausalito’s Matthew Turner is an experiential learning vessel designed after the ship Galilee, which was built in the late 1800’s by ship designer Matthew Turner. Colorful Sausalito History Did you know?
two-year sentence, she learned the art of bootlegging from fellow prisoners. After her release, she headed to Ventura to open a speakeasy. Once she’d saved enough money, a 21-year-old Stanford made the move to San Francisco, and immediately opened a brothel.
Stanford’s dazzling confidence, wit, and steadfast ability to keep secrets quickly made her an infamous figure in the city. She was arrested repeatedly, but charges against her rarely stuck, and she was soon successful enough to open a second house of ill repute.
By the age of 37, Stanford, having thrown herself full force at a life of madaming, was running a high-end Nob Hill bordello that was so legendary, it was said to be frequented by the most respected politicians and businessmen in the region, as well as visiting dignitaries and celebrities from around the country. Stanford listed the likes of Errol Flynn, Frank Sinatra and Humphrey Bogart (who eventually got 86’d) as regulars. “Madaming is the sort of thing that happens to you,” Stanford wrote in her autobiography just “Like getting a battlefield commission or becoming the dean of women at Stanford University.”
Stanford moved to Sausalito and opened a restaurant, appropriately titled Valhalla. While the venue attracted celebrity customers including Marlon Brando, Bing Crosby, and Lucille Ball, and advertised itself as a venue strictly for wining and dining, local rumor and a red light at the back of the building suggested otherwise. Thanks to the Bohemian nature of the Bay Area enclave, neighbors adored and supported the Inn.
From Madam to Mayor
The movie named Lady of the House, in 1978, hit American televisions, carrying with it a story that would be utterly preposterous if it weren’t, in fact, true: a hard-bitten brothel madam works her way up to become popular mayor of a small town. This was the life story of Ms. Sally Stanford, who conquered hardship and a third-grade education, with a winning combination of sass and street smarts.
Born in 1903, in Oregon, the second of five children, Stanford’s wild spirit showed itself early. She eloped at the age of 16 and ran straight into a life of crime, immediately landing herself in prison. During her
Her good standing in the community, as well as the fact that the local council wouldn’t allow her to install an electric sign on her restaurant, eventually led to Stanford’s political ambitions. With the support of local woman’s club, it took Stanford five attempts to win a seat, but she was dogged in her determination to win in 1976. After her decision to retire in 1980, in a beautiful gesture, the council insisted on naming her “Vice Mayor For Life.”
After her death in 1982, flags around town, as well as on the Sausalito ferry, were flown at half-mast in her honor. A water fountain at the town’s ferry landing instructs visitors to “HAVE A DRINK ON SALLY.”
“If you are being run out of town,” she once said, “get in front of the crowd and make it look like a parade.”

Jumbo & Pee-Wee - Vina del Mar Park
The Vina del Mar Park holds some interesting architectural elements. When the San Francisco 1915 Panama-Pacific Fair was created, many temporary buildings and accents were created out of an industrial-strength paper mache designed to last a year. Global artists were represented at this world-class event; about 1500 full-size sculptures adorned the 635-acre complex. Among the large sculptures on display were examples of classical-era art formats in fountains, statues and architectural accents.
The famous “Court of the Universe” complex was designed by William B. Faville, from Sausalito. Faville commissioned twelve full-size African Gray elephants, decked in finery, to be produced by the well-known ‘McKim, Mead & White design firm in New York City.
At the conclusion of the 1915 San Francisco Panama-Pacific International Exposition, the displays were destroyed. William B. Faville could not bear the thought of his beautiful elephants being destroyed, so he ferried his favorite two elephants and one beautiful paper mache fountain across the San Francisco Bay to his Sausalito home. The triangle-shaped park: Vina del Mar, in Sausalito, holds the 1915 Faville treasures.
The towns’ children named their elephants: ‘Jumbo’ and ‘Pee-Wee’ while the adults admired the stunning fountain. Against all odds, the industrial-strength paper mache materials remained intact for almost 20-years; however, during the mid-1930s, Jumbo and Pee-Wee, along with the elegant fountain, started to decompose.
Jumbo and Pee-Wee Today - During the Great Depression, money was not available to have Jumbo and Pee-Wee professionally reconstructed out of original materials. Instead, the best elephant was used to create a mold that was used to pour the two identical cement elephants that are found in the Vina del Mar Park today. The modern Vina del Mar Park elephants are among the most photographed sights in Sausalito.
Sausalito Sea Lion
The sea lion had watched over Sausalito’s waterfront for more than fiftyyears, and has come into being in two distinct iterations. It has weathered storms, tides and changes in the makeup of the City that is watches over and in the process has become more than a mere landmark.
The Origins of the Sausalito Sea Lion statue was born from the mind of beloved local artist Al Sybrian who was a longtime resident of the bayside city and a prolific artist, sculptor, and sketcher. Living near the water in Sausalito, Sybrian saw the sea lions up close on a daily basis and became enamored with their form and playfulness.
Having no funds for the materials for his project himself, Sybrian’s friends and other locals in the community began putting together a collection to fund the creation of what would become the city’s iconic landmark. In 1957, the concrete sea lion was born and sat at its bayside home for more than eight years until weather, tidal forces, and shifting ground began to deteriorate the stonework, and the sea lion began to crumble. It was rebuilt in 1966 out of bronze and stood in its rightful spot until January 2023, when heavy storms dislodged the sea lion into the Bay, and a special crane was brought in to rescue him. After fundraising efforts and a wonderful local artist Reason Bradley, repair the statue, it will be back in its rightful spot, ready for more photos.

Robin Sweeny - Our first
Robin Sweeny is Sausalito’s first woman mayor and the longest-serving member of the Sausalito City Council. Born in New York City, Mrs. Sweeny moved to Sausalito in 1953, received a nursing degree from Monmouth New Jersey Medical Center and later graduated with a bachelor’s degree from what was then San Francisco State College. Sweeny, worked as an operating room nurse during most of the 28 years she served on the council. She served as Sausalito’s mayor four times during her tenure.
Elected to her first of seven consecutive terms on the council in 1968, Robin campaigned on her opposition to development along the Sausalito waterfront. Sometimes called “the library foe,” Mrs. Sweeny was a vocal opponent of a proposal to build a new

city library along the bay prior to her run for office. She also fought against a proposed 40-acre residential project in Sausalito that would have required 20 acres of bay fill. Neither of the projects came to fruition in their intended bayfront locations.
Robin testified twice in the early 1970s before the Senate Subcommittee on National Parks in Washington, D.C., urging for the inclusion of 200
acres of Sausalito’s Wolfback Ridge in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. The second time she testified, in 1974, 300 homes were under consideration for the site, and her lobbying was successful.
Robin Sweeny Park is located on Caledonia Street in front of City Hall, on any given day you can find families enjoying the park and the sounds of children playing.

In 2021, the Sausalito Chamber of Commerce opened the Sausalito Visitor Center a place for local artists and designers to showcase their items . The goal was to provide a place where locals & visitors could view and purchase one-of-a-kind items created by local Sausalito and Marin County artists and small businesses .
Between 25 – 30 artists are on display at the Visitor Center. If you love wall art, you can select from oil, acrylic, watercolor or sketch artists. Local gifts include handmade pottery, candles, soaps and art made from recycled glass. Many travelers collect holiday ornaments of which we have a magical selection.
Some of our smaller boutique stores that are not located right down town also take advantage of
the opportunity to sell at the center.
We are located right in the middle of downtown, near the Ferry Landing and Vina del Mar Park, stop by while you are here and enjoy what our artists and local businesses have to offer. You can also pickup a Sausalito Visitor Map and other information for your visit, including ideas of where to eat, what to see and where the best place is to take a photo.
