Glendale’s attractions are widespread throughout the city. In addition to the many offerings of Glendale’s downtown, residents enjoy more than 30 city parks and nearly 4,800 acres of publicly owned open space, ranging from the expansive Deukmejian Wilderness Park in the north to the new Cerritos “Gateway” park that greets visitors who enter the southern part of the community.
In the eastern part of the city, with access through Glenoaks Canyon, is the Scholl Canyon Golf and Tennis Center, which includes an 18-hole executive golf course and sports facility for youth and adult recreation. (The view of Glendale and surrounding area is spectacular!) Other popular facilities include the multi-use Glendale Sports Complex, Verdugo Park (site of many community events), 8

RESIDENTS ENJOY MORE THAN 30 CITY PARKS AND NEARLY 4,800 ACES OF PUBLICLY OPEN SPACE Verdugo Adobe, Tea House, and the Doctors’ House. The Doctors’ House Victorian Museum derives its name from four doctors and their families who lived here in succession during Glendale’s early history. Originally located in the downtown area, the Queen Anne/Eastlake house was moved to Brand Park in 1980 and restored by the Glendale Historical Society with support from the city. This landmark 1890 museum houses the Nell Shipman exhibit, spotlighting the silent
Deukmejian Wilderness Park
filmmaker who rented the house from 1917 to 1920. Located adjacent to Verdugo Park, the Civic Auditorium is home to many community events and is often the site of shows and exhibitions.
Glendale is home to Forest Lawn Memorial-Park, one of America’s best known cemeteries. Forest Lawn is noted for its extensive art and sculpture collection, which attracts thousands of visitors each year. G

GLENDALE IS WIDE AWAKE ANd THRIVING For a long time, Glendale was considered a sleepy town nestled at the base of the San Gabriel Mountains where the sidewalks were rolled up for the night at 6 p.m. That is certainly not the case anymore! Today Glendale is a city with a thriving downtown business district that bustles day and night, where people enjoy the diversity of shopping available at the Glendale Galleria and The Americana at Brand as much for the dancing fountains and the clang of the streetcar bell as the vast variety of stores, restaurants and entertainment opportunities. On Brand Boulevard audiences gather at the city’s landmark art deco Alex Theatre to enjoy an evening of jazz, comedy, classical music or the ballet, often spending the time before to enjoy a meal or stay late for an after-performance glass of wine. And while the thriving environ12

As Judee Kendall, President-CEO of Glendale Chamber of Commerce, enjoys pointing out, the Chamber currently serves more than 850 member businesses and organizations, ranging from world-famous corporations with headquarters in Glendale to locally owned small businesses – and most everything in between. attraction and business retention effort. When we look at the economy of Glendale we tend to focus on the work that’s been done in downtown. Over the past 10 years we’ve seen the entitlement of approximately 4,000 new luxury apartments and hotel rooms, and we expect to add 500 more. We also have about 10 million square feet of Class A office space in downtown.” This increase of retail, residential property and office space, says Philip Lanzafame, Director of Community Development for the City of Glendale, is directly related to 25 years of planning by the city. It also reflects
a more current effort to attract a young, tech-savvy generation to Glendale—a generation that likes an urban lifestyle with a smaller eco-footprint, with conveniently connected shopping, dining and transportation options. “Glendale has always been a strong retail destination,” Lanzafame points out, “but the opening of the Americana (May 2, 2008) introduced the next generation of retail experience. From an economic development standpoint Glendale has been very good at looking forward and putting the tools in place to make that happen.”

Graduation from GUSD is just the beginning for many Glendale residents, and Glendale Community College (GCC) is great option for continuing education. GCC offers a number of credit and noncredit classes, career training and certificate programs for students of all ages and backgrounds, and serves more than 25,000 students every semester with day and night college credit classes, and adult education and job training programs. With tuition among the lowest of any college in California, GCC students can earn an associate degree in accounting, English, theatre arts, aviation, dance, Spanish, French, marketing, nursing, welding, and more, as well as a high school

The Glendale Transportation Center, featuring a restored 1920’s Southern Pacific train depot, is a hub of activity, including Beeline, Metrolink commuter and Amtrak rail service. In addition, the city is planning ways to expand and improve transportation within the community, focusing on the downtown “core” and better eastwest connections with neighboring cities.
City Government The city of Glendale is operated by a city manager-council form of government. Each of the five city council members
is elected at-large and serves four-year staggered terms in office. Council elections are held on the first Tuesday in April during odd-numbered years. Every year, the Council selects a mayor from among its ranks. The mayor is responsible for presiding at City Council meetings and performing a wide range of ceremonial duties in addition to the
regular council workload. City Council members also comprise the Successor Agency of the former Redevelopment Agency and Housing Authority boards. City Council meets most Tuesdays at 6 p.m. These meetings are preceded, as needed, by Community Development and Housing. As prescribed by law, meetings are open to the public. Participation and attendance by the public are encouraged. The city clerk and city treasurer positions are elective offices; the council appoints Glendale’s city manager and city attorney. In turn, the city manager or designated representative appoints qualified individuals to serve in other city positions. More than 1,600 full-time employees work for and serve local residents. They are grouped into divisions, each led by a manager. In addition, residents are invited to apply for appointment to a variety of boards and commissions.
