Studies show that people subconsciously don’t see things they aren’t in the habit of looking for. Or, maybe they’re distracted by texting, looking at GPS, or checking their hair.

In these situations, a motorcycle’s rider’s best defense is to take active measures to make themselves more visible. Here are a few ways to become more visible while riding your motorcycle.

Instant response LEDs require no warm-up time. Greater durability LEDs have no breakable glass or fi laments. Energy efficiency LEDs use at least 75 percent less energy than incandescent bulbs. Longevity and low maintenance LEDs last 35 to 50 times longer than incandescent bulbs. Directional light LEDs can direct light where it is needed far more precisely than incandescent or fluorescent light sources.

Use your high beams – daytime riding Riding experts are divided on whether riding with your high beam on during the day is a good idea. On one hand, a high beam can get you noticed more readily by oncoming drivers. On the other hand, if your high beam annoys drivers, you may be doing more harm than good. Tap your brakes Another way to draw attention to your presence is to tap the brakes once or twice when stopping. The flashing of the brake light helps you stand out when you stop or slow down—even if you’re slowing down without using your brakes. Of course, in an emergency situation, maximum stopping power is most important and a proper emergency stopping technique should override flashing your brake light. Add LEDs So, what is an LED? A light-emitting diode, or LED, is a type of solid-state lighting that uses semiconductors and electroluminescence to create light. The LED as we know it has been around for more than 50 years; in fact, its origins date to 1907, when H.J. Round discovered electroluminescence by experimenting with a combination 20

Wear highly visible and reflective gear Black is considered fashionable for riders, but white is more visible.

Motorcycle helmet (Remember: ABATE of SC has made it possible for Riders in SC to choose to or not to wear a helmet!) If you aren’t willing to give up your dark helmet, you can add some reflective tape. You can even buy black reflective tape, so it’s barely noticeable in daylight, but reflects brightly at night when caught by the light of another vehicle. You don’t have to go crazy. Even a little bit of carefully placed tape can make a big difference.

Riding gear The same goes for your riding gear. Bright is better. But again, you don’t have to sacrifice style for visibility. An easier way to draw attention to yourself is to throw on a brightly colored reflective vest. You can also look for a riding jacket with built-in reflectivity. Reflective tape While you’re at it, you might even consider a little bit of strategically placed reflective tape on your motorcycle itself. Yes, this sounds like blasphemy to some, but when done carefully, tastefully, and subtly, it can add conspicuity to your nighttime rides. Consider the driving conditions Before riding, also consider the ambient lighting conditions. What’s it like outside? Riding at night presents certain obvious challenges, but so does riding in the fog or riding at early morning or dusk. For instance, riding in the fog can be even more challenging than riding at night because you can’t count on other vehicle headlights to light up your reflective apparel. Visibility can be reduced to

almost nothing, not to mention that the road surface is probably damp, which should be factored in when stopping and turning. In some cases, it might even be best to pull over and wait it out or stop for the night. And, remember, don’t use your high beam in fog. Dawn and dusk present the challenge of potentially blinding glare. When the sun is low in the sky, it can blind other drivers, particularly when the sun is behind you. Pro tip: Anytime you can see your shadow in front of your tire, use extra caution. Assume that oncoming drivers are going to lose you in the glare and be prepared to stop or take evasive action as needed. Lane positioning and blind spots In general, the best place to be is the left third of your lane, or position 1. This makes you the most visible to oncoming traffic and also puts you in the view of the driver’s side mirror of the vehicle in front of you. Once you’ve established position 1 as your home base, you can maneuver within the lane to make yourself more visible. For instance, imagine riding on a two-lane highway when you see a large truck coming from the other direction. It’s a passing zone, so there’s a chance a car might pull out to try to get around the truck. This would be a good time to move to the right side of the lane, position 3, making yourself more visible to any vehicles behind the truck. It also gives you the best opportunity to SEE (search, evaluate, and execute). Navigating through intersections When making your way through a crowded intersection, try to make eye contact with drivers who might inadvertently cross your path. This WWW.CHROMESC.COM

helps confirm that they know you’re there. A little nod or quick hand signal can help seal the deal. Don’t assume they’ve seen you. They might be looking right past you. Don’t dwell on any other thing. Take everything in. Watch the driver’s eyes, watch for tire movement, and keep an eye out for other potential conflicts or threats. Roll off the throttle to create more time to see and be seen. Cover the controls to reduce reaction time. Change lane positions to create movement that attracts the eye and helps drivers notice you. And, don’t flash your headlight, as this can sometimes be perceived as a go-ahead signal. Use a turn signal Always use your turn signal, even when it feels unnecessary—like when leaving your driveway or pulling out of a parking lot onto an empty road. Make it a habit, an automatic action. It’s the best way to make sure you’ll remember to signal when it matters most. Use the horn A well-timed beep of your horn is another effective way to get noticed. Don’t overdo it, of course. Using your horn gratuitously is obnoxious and does more harm than good to rider-driver relationships. Be visible. Think Invisibly. Assume that other drivers can’t see you and act accordingly. This will help keep you in a defensive state of mind. After all, you can’t do anything to make the drivers around you drive better, but you can do a lot to help make yourself more visible and to ride defensively.

GOD’S PPE Monthly Devotional

HELMET LAWS SUCK! But then apparently so does PROPER FOOTWEAR! What am I talking about you ask? Almost every time I participate in motorcycle events or large group rides, I see the same things. Folks wearing tank tops, shorts, flip-flops, and no helmet. While I realize we have the right to choose what we wear while riding, and I am happy our state has very relaxed helmet laws, we should not have to legislate common sense. Having ridden motorcycles for the better part of 49 years, I have been involved in or seen my share of accidents. Almost weekly someone is calling me or posting on my social media page about a biker being involved in a wreck. Folks run off the road, are hit by other vehicles, or they are involved in some other situation that makes them go down. I have been to countless accident scenes where the rider could have been in much better shape if he/she would have been dressed in the right Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Currently, I have not one, not two, but three friends who are recovering because of three separate motorcycle accidents. While they have various injuries from broken bones to road rash, none of the three would be here today had they not been wearing a good DOT approved full face helmet. In 2015 a full-face helmet, thick jacket, heavy jeans, and boots kept me from being seriously injured when a guy chose to run a stop sign in front of me. Along with a good helmet, proper clothing is more than just a great idea. I realize shorts are cooler on hot days but sliding down the road on your bare legs is not. Tank tops may look great as you show off your summertime bod, but road rash all over your upper body is a high price to pay in the name of looking cute. While I love flip flops, it’s too late to wish for a pair of heavy boots when you hit one of those little yellow road reflectors with your bare toe and tear all the meat from it. There is an old saying among those of us who enjoy motorcycles, “dress for the slide, not for the ride.” No one plans to go down on their bike while tooling along on a Sunday ride, but it does happen. This lifestyle that we have chosen is supposed be fun, but it can also be very dangerous. 24

On that note, we may be dressed head to toe and physically prepared for anything, but not prepared spiritually. We may have the $400 helmet, a half a cow’s worth of leather riding gear, and still not be completely prepared for what life throws our way. This world we live in can be tough. On or off our motorcycles, we face daily struggles that can derail our lives without a moment’s notice. People all over the place are suffering from disease, addiction, broken relationships, joblessness, and a host of other issues. We need to be ready for whatever comes against us, and there is only one place to look for that kind of protection… We have to keep our focus on God! Ephesians 6:10-18 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore, put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people. Remember, while riding, your PPE is important, but God’s PPE is a must! Shine that light! Atalaya Castle

State Park (1960) In 1960, 2,500 acres of the former estate, including the house and sculpture garden, was leased for free to the state of South Carolina. Huntington Beach State Park was formed and now maintains the house and grounds and offers guided tours during part of the year. For the past thirty-seven years, an art festival has been held on the grounds in September every year.

...in Murrells Inlet, SC The history of Atalaya Castle in Murrells Inlet, SC is little known, even inside of our state but here lies a fascinating story of art and generosity dating back to the Great Depression. Beginnings (1930’s) Atalaya Castle was built by Archer M. Huntington and his wife Anna between 1931 and 1933. Archer was a philanthropist from New York City and designed the house to be a winter residence for him and his wife after she was diagnosed with tuberculosis. He designed the plans himself based on Spanish or Moorish architecture coupled with his own imagination (built without drawn plans). Anna, who was an artist and sculptor, did her part as well and designed the wrought iron grills that serve as hurricane protection on all the windows. The castle living quarters consist of 30 rooms around three sides of the perimeter, while the studio, with its 25-foot skylight, opens onto a small, enclosed courtyard . In the center of the courtyard, surrounded by native plants, is a water tower that is 40 feet tall after which the house was named. ‘Atalaya’ means ‘Watchtower’ in Spanish. Various other areas included indoor and outdoor studios for Anna to work on her art, and animal enclosures where they kept bears, horses, monkeys, and a leopard. Archer insisted that the house be built by local laborers to help boost the economy of the region during the depression years. They employed many local people to work at the house and gardens, as well, and were known as very good employers. The house was situated on the ocean within an estate that originally consisted of over 9,000 acres of mixed land. They used part of that acreage to build the first public sculpture garden, known as Brookgreen Gardens, to showcase Anna’s work. World War II (1942-1946) During World War II, the Huntington’s left Atalaya and let the United States Air Corps use it as a barracks. The men patrolled the beach and operated a radar unit from the house. Other than a crashed plane on the beach, the house was unaffected. Transition (1947) The Huntington’s returned to Atalaya in 1946 and 1947. After that, Anna’s studio was moved to another portion of the property in Brookgreen Gardens, and the rest of the furnishings, that weren’t donated elsewhere, were sent to Connecticut after the death of Archer in 1955. Anna visited the house again only two more times in 1956 and 1958.

National Landmark (1984) Atalaya Castle was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984 to preserve the history of Anna Hyatt Huntington and her husband Archer Huntington. It remains a unique and vital piece of SC history.

Andrew Jackson, A Boy of The Waxhaws, Andrew Jackson State Park, Lancaster, SC, depicts a young Andy Jackson, sitting astride a farm horse. It is a bronze, larger-than-life statue. Usually her horses were noble, prancing, fierce beasts. She made Jackson's horse a gentler animal by fixing the energy and tension of the work on the figure of young Jackson. The sculpture was initiated by a letter from a 6th grade class at Rice Elementary School in Lancaster, asking if she would sculpt a statue of young Andrew Jackson for the state park. Mrs. Huntington submitted to do so, and replied, in part, "A picture came to mind as I read your letter and I have tried out the composition. I have Jackson as a young man of 16 or 17 seated bareback on a farm horse, one hand leaning on the horse's rump and looking over his native hills, to wonder what the future holds for him. He must have been a good looking and thoughtful boy, wondering what the future might hold, moments we all have from our teens to our nineties." The statue was completed at her Bethel, Connecticut studio, and was first worked in clay in half the scale of the final statue. Even then, it was necessary for the 80 something yrold sculptor to use a tall ladder to reach the top. SC school children responded by donating their nickels and dimes to raise the necessary funds for a massive base to support the statue. County workmen placed the statue on its Lancaster County pink granite base in time for the ceremony marking Andrew Jackson's 200th birthday, in March 1967. This was Huntington's last major work, completed after her ninety-first birthday. The statue is located at Andrew Jackson State Park, about nine miles north of Lancaster, SC, just off US 521.
