SC 34-3 Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association ®️ in collaboration with RedLine Powersports hosted their 1st Bikers and Bicycle Fun day. 34-3 Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association®️ taught kids and parents about the importance of wearing a helmet, using hand signals and how members of Motorcycle groups like the Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association ®️ are great people, who love riding their motorcycles and volunteer their time to fundraise for charities and to help the Veteran Community.

Marty Phillip's (34-3 Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association®️) summarized it well, "We are dads, moms and grandparents like many of you, we just still like to play outside on our bikes!" Special thanks to the Horry County Police Department-Moto unit . They showcased their skills on proper handling of motorcycles. Also, to the Horry County Sherrif Department who came out to talk to parents and kids about other important aspects of safety. In addition to bicycle safety the kids also enjoyed riding a demo course on Staycic electric bikes with free lunch being provided by RedLine Powersports. Embrace Hospice graciously donated 100 helmets for the kids. iHeartMedia provided music and entertainment for all ages. Current Motorcycle Related Information “Dedicated To Freedom Of The Road”: We all get the patch when we join
ABATE and these words are written on top. Actually every ABATE organization in the United Sates that has this patch for their membership has these words. As you know this year we have started pushing for more Freedom of the Road. When we say freedom, we are talking about being free to ride legally on our roads and not have to worry about fines, or worse, imprisonment. There is also a hidden freedom that is more a matter of life and death, and that is freedom to ride without another person violating your lane and causing injury, or in many cases death. Automobiles have increasingly become injury proof and many drivers act like that. We on the other hand are not and have to watch for those distracted drivers, get better training and in many cases just give up riding all together because we are tired of all those close calls. Over the next several years we will push for stronger laws and victim advocacy much like M.A. D. D. has done for people that drink and drive. There are a lot of programs they have been successful that not only have prevented more collisions involving alcohol, but also strong programs for the ones that are left behind.

• Observe all traffic laws, yielding to motorcyclists, especially while turning at intersections • When interacting with motorcyclists, avoid distractions that place motorcyclists and other road users at risk. • Remember, motorcycles are smaller than most vehicles and difficult to see. Their size can also cause other drivers to misjudge their speed and distance. • Though a motorcycle is a small vehicle, its operator still has the same rights of the road as any other motorist. Allow the motorcycle the full width of a lane at all times. • Always use a turn signal when changing lanes or merging with traffic. • If you see a motorcycle with a signal on, remember: motorcycle signals are often non-canceling, and the motorcyclist could have forgotten to turn it off. Proceed with caution to allow the motorcyclists the opportunity to complete the maneuver. • Check all mirrors and blind spots for motorcycles before changing lanes or merging with traffic. • Always allow more follow distance — beyond three to four seconds — when behind a motorcycle. This gives them more time to maneuver or stop in an emergency. • Improper use of a vehicle’s rear-view and side-view mirrors contributes to collisions, particularly with smaller vehicles like motorcycles. With roughly 40% of a vehicle’s outer perimeter zones hidden by blind spots, improper adjustment, or lack of use of one’s side-view mirrors, can have dire consequences for motorcyclists. • Allow more follow distance — 3 or 4 seconds — when following a motorcycle; this gives the motorcycle rider more time to maneuver or stop in an emergency. Motorcycle riders may suddenly need to change speed or adjust their lane position to avoid hazards such as potholes, gravel, wet or slippery surfaces, pavement seams, railroad crossings, and grooved pavement. • NHTSA-funded research has shown that people behind the wheels of passenger vehicles are distracted more than 50% of the time. “Carolina Squat” Dangerous to motorcycles Dear Honorable Member, We would like your support in passage of the S908 which is currently being sponsored by Senator Rankin and Senator Grooms.
Unfortunately with the trend on Instagram the Carolina Squat has become all too popular form of vehicle modification.
Concerns for motorcyclist came when a rider in front of these modified vehicles are overtaken by the over lifted front of these vehicles including the headlights.
Motorcyclists are already facing an ever increasing “I didn’t see them” reality when riding on our roads in South Carolina. With the decrease in visibility over the hoods this only increase the chance these drivers have of causing a collision with motorcyclists.
First offense would be $100, second $200 and third would be $300 with a 12month suspension of their license.
North Carolina passed similar legislation that limits their vehicles from being modified over three inches which took effect December 1, 2021.
Below is part of an article from a Spartanburg mechanic that was recently published by Henry Coburn Spartanburg mechanic and Affordable Auto Repair Owner Shawn Thomson said he hopes South Carolina Lawmakers pass a similar law. “I wish they would,” he said. “It’s just something that shouldn’t be on the road.” According to Thomson, the modification can go beyond making the vehicle unsafe: It can also damage components of the vehicle through added stress. “You’re raising and lowering stuff too far and it’s causing too much stress on stuff, like drive shafts, the suspension, the brakes,” he said. “The brakes are the big thing.”

Pappy's Adventures Continue Well, it’s Spring again. The snow is just about gone and it’s going to be in the 50’s this weekend. I am going to take the Zundapp out for a ride. It’s been a long time. I just finished up a welding night job. Boom... I got $350 bucks! That’s a shit load of cash! On my way home, I saw a guy rolling out some motorcycles. Triumphs! So, I stopped to see if I could buy one! “No” He said, “It’s all or none!” So, I asked how much. $300 bucks! So, I bought them all! All 11 frames, about 18 motors, and I got 11 titles from ’51 to ’58. This guy hill climbed and flat tracked, so lots of speed. Parts took three trips in my ‘47 Ford pickup. The last trip Larry Wordinger, (the Triumph guru of the area), was there. He was pissed! But, I made a deal with Larry Wordinger.... If he helped me to get a bike running, he got the rest for helping me. I wanted to build a ‘52 for me to ride. A good deal for both of us! The motor was a hot one-750, big cylinders and a Bonneville head, twin carburetor. F**king fast. Faster than Books K model. This thing would haul ASS. Hotter than hell. Had an 18” on the back and a 21” on the front. Had a front brake, buck horns bars, and a “P- nut” tank, not a real gas tank. Sprung solo seat and a p pad., AKA a ”pile on pad” or a “p*ssy pad.” Lucus taillight, low pipes and a shorty muffler. Lots of chrome. Blue and silver paint job. Cliff Blojett painted it. It was the fastest bike in the bunch, but I lived through it somehow! “Don’t like pain.” This is going to be one hell of a summer! I got Sundays off, so look out, Saturday nights! Still had to be in by midnight and I was never late. My dad was tough on us, but he loved us kids and I learned a lot from him. He had a ’29 JD “H” when mom and him started dating in the 1930’s. I came from good stock!

Now, I knew if I got busted doing something dumb that would be the end of my riding until I was 16. That would suck. Played it cool, got two years to go and we all had good reputations. No big city bullshit. Just cool bikes and hot rods, my current side car looks like a ’33 Ford Roadster! I learned a long time ago that it’s never too late to have a second childhood! The Triumph was that summer. We all went to the Martin Drag Strip a lot. Book was building a 1957 Sportster called King Kong, 1200 and a 2-speed tranny. I got to meet Pete Hill that summer. I now am friends with him some 60 years later. He is helping me on a ‘45 project. got ahead of myself there. Sorry about that! Anyway, I had two close calls that summer. Left turn in front of me; the front brakes save that one and the next one too. Well, to say the least, this has started out to be a super summer! I got "sweety,” My mom made her a bikini!. The ocean has nothing on Lake Michigan! Plus, just on the other side is Milwaukee, WI. You can almost smell the Harley 105. “That’s Panhead Oil!” 8 of us took the ferry boat from Ludington to Milwaukee to go to the Harley factory! Eight bucks, round trip! Hope to see you at bike night! Who Has Your Back? Monthly Devotional
Here I go again with another story… Late one winter night, I was riding home from Anderson SC with some of my brothers, and it was cold! No, it was REALLY cold! This was one of those nights where you dress for warmth, but after a while the chill begins to creep in through your jacket and chaps until you are shivering. My heels were resting on top of my highway pegs, so my toes were somewhat pointed up in the air. The night was extremely dark because of overcast skies and there were no lights other than ours on this deserted road. Glancing down to my left, I noticed the headlight from the bike behind me was reflecting on the eyelet of my boot. The bike to my immediate right was visible out of the corner of my eye and his headlight doubled our field of vision. Another headlight glow in my right-side mirror reminded me of a third bike just behind the one to my right. At that moment, I had a realization… We were rolling along in a tight formation, at more than the posted speed, and I am trusting these guys with my life… And they are trusting me with theirs. Through hardships and celebrations, laughter and tears, it is a trust that is earned… They have my back and I have theirs, and it has been proven more than once. As I have mentioned before, I spent most of my adult life in the military. Between the Army and Army National Guard, it has been my pleasure to serve with thousands of soldiers I can call on even today and they will be there for me. When you are crawling through mud, standing on a guard point, or getting in a fight on a Saturday night, the soldiers you serve with will not leave you behind. 24
Even years later… It is a trust that is earned… They also have my back and I have theirs, and it has been proven more than once.

It started in a small shop in Chesnee and is now in a state-of-the-art facility in Spartanburg. Almost at once, they realized that the small Chesnee shop was too small so they looked for another location. They found an excellent location near I85 and Rt 221 – on the interstate frontage road at 50 Fairview Church Road in Spartanburg, SC. There was a very large building, and a huge parking area around the building. After many hours of hard work, the facility started to look like a motorcycle dealership with the showroom in front, and the service shop in the rear. On Saturday April 16th, they held their Grand Opening celebration. Travis and his crew worked hard to pull it together. They hired a couple bands: “Mojo and Max” played from noon til 2:00PM, and “The Piedmont Boys” played from 2:30PM til 5:00PM. There was a food truck dishing out tasty meals, and a “Bouncy House’ for the kids. They had room enough for many vendors and swap-meet tents in the parking area. To top it off, they raffled off a beautiful black 2006 Harley-Davidson Softail motorcycle at 5:00PM – after you followed the entrance instructions on Facebook (no purchase necessary). In other words, they were giving away a Harley for free!! When I awoke Saturday morning, it was raining. The weatherman said that it would pass by noon. For once, he was right. The rain stopped in the morning, and it was sunny and warm by the afternoon – perfect for the Grand Opening party. I arrived at about 2pm and was guided to the back of the parking lot to park “Miss Vickie” with all the other bikes. It was very crowded but there appeared to be some organization in all the chaos. I walked around the parking lot – looking at all the miscellaneous parts for sale. I recognized all of them as parts for a Harley-Davidson motorcycle. I looked at every display, and they didn’t have any parts to fit on “Miss Vickie” – a Victory motorcycle. I stopped at the Spartanburg Regional Hospice Ride tent to get a flyer. I’ve been on the ride a few times, and it was always fun. This year, it’s on August 27th at the Spartanburg Shrine Club. 30
I walked all the way around the parking lot to the front of the building - to the Antique Motorcycle Club of America (AMCA) Legends chapter tent to talk with Bud and Ken. Bud was busy signing up a new member, so I talked with Ken for a while. He brought two of his classic Harleys to display. Then, I walked into the dealership to find Travis. He was there making sure that everything went as planned. I gave him a couple magazines, and he hammed it up when I took his picture.
I walked back outside. The picnic tables on the side to the building were full of people eating and listening to the band. They sounded pretty good! I didn’t stay to see who won the motorcycle, but I did see the video on Facebook. The young man who won was Ben Padgett. He was so excited that he couldn’t say much when he went on stage. All he could do was hug Travis a few times. I’m sure that he’ll spend a lot of fun-filled miles on that Harley.
