An Opportunity to Lead is the largest capital campaign in the history of Choate Rosemary Hall and the largest-ever in Connecticut secondary school history. The Schoolâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s previous capital campaign, A Shared Commitment , which successfully concluded in 2000, raised $135 million.

Looking back, says Executive Director of Development Daniel J. Courcey, III â&#x20AC;&#x2122;86, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s clear we initiated this campaign at the near tail-end of a golden era of fundraising. At the time we launched the campaign, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was 12,108. Countrywide, Bear Stearns, Merrill Lynch and Lehman Brothers were doing ďŹ ne. And Bernie Madoff was a relative unknown. The skies were blue and the possibilities unlimited. Then the global ďŹ nancial meltdown of 2008 tested the true mettle of Choate Rosemary Hall and its ambitious capital campaign. By November 20, 2008, the Dow Jones fell to 7,552 and the pressure was decidedly on.â&#x20AC;?

In his Commencement remarks, author and historian Chris Matthews shared with graduates what his research for his new book, Jack Kennedy: Elusive Hero , uncovered about the developing leadership traits of future president, John F. Kennedy ’35, while he was still a student at Choate.

This was Edward J. Shanahan’s last Commencement after serving Choate as headmaster since 1991. He was presented with an honorary Choate diploma

by President of the Sixth Form, William Laverack, of New Canaan, Connecticut. The previous day, longtime faculty member G. Edmondson Maddox, retiring for the third time, gave the Baccalaureate remarks, excerpted below, which captured the theme of the weekend: “Stay connected with this place and each other.”

“As someone who has sat through his share of graduations – 51, if you include Ms. Patton’s kindergarten class of 1947 – I have some small inkling of what you are silently saying right now: ‘Let’s just get this weekend over with so the grad parties can begin.’

“While you regret that the time has come to leave your friends, and perhaps acknowledge there have been aspects of your time here that have been idyllic, you are oh-so-ready to break free of the limitations placed upon you by the School: no more community lunch; no curfew; no coed visiting restrictions; no weekend sign-out. Since you were old enough to understand the meaning of the word ‘no’, you have lived in a world where many of the decisions in your daily life have been dictated by others. As a parent of three daughters, and a teacher of thousands of students, I know well the tensions that can exist between parent and child, teacher and student, older generation and younger generation, a young life struggling to break free of the shackles that we adults put on you as you strain to soar, like Icarus, towards the sun.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;Nothing speaks so poignantly to these tensions as when we cry, in the words of the Cat Stevensâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; song Father and Son , â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;I was once like you are now, and I know itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not easy.â&#x20AC;&#x2122; We want to hold on for a bit longer, not relinquish the bond that has connected us to you for years, not to acknowledge that our little boy or girl has grown up and has become less dependent on us and more self-reliant, more responsible for his or her own decisions. â&#x20AC;&#x153;And you reply: â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;How can I try to explain, when I do he turns away againâ&#x20AC;Ś from the moment I could talk I was ordered to listen.
