Shop Local

The Importance of Keeping it Local

As we hear the news that several prominent retail sites in the town look set to close we are looking at more empty shop fronts, loss of jobs and a sad town centre.

We all want the speed and convenience of online shopping today but quite simply how do we expect the town centre shops to stay open if we are changing where we spend our money?

We are not alone famous UK retail names that have vanished in the past couple of years include Toys R Us, Maplin and Poundworld. HMV is on the brink. The Centre for Retail Research reported that 43 retailers bit the dust in 2018, affecting 2,594 stores.

So what’s the answers? How can you make a difference?

The first thing to consider is where you spend your money, we have many national and also a great mix of independent shops on our high street which unless we support them they will not thrive and survive. National stores work on statistics and if a store isn’t performing it will be closed. Independents have more of an emotional approach but facts are facts and accountants reports are final; hard decisions have to be made but ultimately business owners have to close if they aren’t supported by the community.

Why Supporting our Small Business is Supporting Our Community

Small businesses create jobs. Many of the ‘new’ jobs that we are told have been created in the UK in recent years have been created by people who have taken the leap of faith to go self-employed, or start their own business and grow it so that they can employ others.

Spending money with a small business keeps more money in your local economy. Research by local authorities in the UK has shown that for every £1 spent with a small or medium-sized business, 63p stays in the local economy. This compares to 40p in every £1 spent with larger businesses. Small businesses will spend more of the money they earn locally, buying products and services from other small businesses, going out to eat and buying tickets for local sports events, the local cinema and local theatre shows. It’s a real win-win situation for our local businesses and communities, helping other businesses to thrive and safeguarding local jobs.

Small independents add colour and variety to our towns and villages. It would be a boring shopping experience if every street had the same national chain stores. One great thing about the big High Street shopping names is that you know what to expect. They are successful because they are consistent when you go into a branch anywhere in the country. Of course they bring shoppers into town and they provide jobs. But it’s also great when you find a one-off shop, founded and run by people with a passion for what they do.

Small business owners are at the forefront of innovation. Owners of independent businesses have the freedom, agility and flexibility to run things their way. They don’t have to go through longwinded processes to get approval for new ideas and they can respond quickly to what their customers want. They know that by building up loyal, regular customers who shout about their business to others, their business will grow. They will listen to your feedback and ideas and that means you can have a bit of influence over what they sell.

Small businesses care about their reputation. Businesses only enjoy longevity by delivering great customer service, quality products and services and value that keeps their customers coming back – and continually attracts new customers too. Shopping local is about the guarantees you have because you know the business owner and their standing in the local community.

Small food businesses are often more environmentally friendly. When you shop at a local bakers, butchers, market or farm shop, it is likely that a high percentage of what’s on sale has had a relatively short journey from where it was first produced.

www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING | 17 So how does the high street of the future look like?

Council planners across the country are having to think smart about what the high street offers. Where retail stores once stood they are being filled with services such as medical centres, children’s activity destinations, training centres to compliment the retailers and bring a purpose into bringing people into the town.

Saxon Wills & Estate Planning

Saxon Wills & Estate Planning has over 20 years of experience, and we are proud members of the Society of Will Writers. We work with one of the leading specialist solicitors for complex Trust and Probate cases, and we are backed by 2.5 million pounds of insurance.

We specialise in Complex Family Wills More families than ever have complex estate planning needs, and so it is important to set up your will correctly. Did you know that without a specific bequest, your stepchildren do not inherit your estate? Or that if you are not married, your partner’s parents could inherit everything, and you’ll get nothing?

Maybe you are on your second marriage, and you want your property to pass on to your children, but you want your new spouse to be able to live in the property until they pass. We can arrange this for you and protect your wishes.

Some of our clients have children from two or more different marriages, and they want to ensure that both sets of children inherit. A standard Will simply can’t do this, and could mean that everything gets left to one set of children by default. We can set up Wills that protect all of your children’s inheritances.

Our clients are also concerned about care home fees reducing their children’s inheritance, and they express worries about their surviving spouse remarrying and the entire estate becoming the property of the new spouse, and not their children. We can ensure that this doesn’t happen. We can set up a Will that is fair to all parties, and protects your children.

Business Wills

Did you know that if you own a business and you do not have a specific business Will, it could be taxed at 40%? This would mean that your life’s work may need to be sold to pay these high taxes, and your descendants will lose control of your company. We can prevent this from happening.

Lasting Power of Attorney. Why you may need a Lasting Power of Attorney:

When you are alive and well, you can take care of your own affairs, and when you pass away, your Executor then deals with your affairs. However, things are not always so cut and dry. There may come a time that you suffer from limited mental capacity, perhaps due to a stroke, dementia, or a brain injury. Without a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA), your affairs could be in limbo, with your accounts off limits, your property unable to be sold, and any paperwork that requires a signature put on hold. Even if you are married and have joint accounts, your spouse is not granted automatic rights, and if you are not married, your partner has no legal status at all. Prevent this from happening by setting up an LPA, and appointing an attorney of your choice to act on your behalf. LPAs come into affect in the case that you lose your mental capacity, and prevent addition stress for you and your loved ones at a difficult time.

SERVICES: • Wills & Trusts: • Powers of Attorneys: • Property Protection Trust • Business Protection Trust • Low & Fixed cost Probate • Full Range Funeral Plans • Home Visits:

We are agents for a range of funeral plan providers.

There are a number of reasons for planning your own funeral. By creating this plan, you remove some of the stress from your family at a very stressful time, and you ensure that your wishes are known. Planning your own funeral and fixing its cost today can also have a great financial benefit. Funeral cost have risen 70.6% in the last 10 years, what will the cost be in 10 or 20 years time? By arranging your funeral plan fixed at today’s prices you can spend your reserves, without worrying that your family will need your funds later for a funeral.

It may be that you can afford a funeral at today’s prices, but you don’t want to commit to paying for a funeral plan in full. If this is the case, we can arrange plans where you can spread the payments across up to 15 years. We can also offer interest-free plans with payments spread across 5 years.

Maybe you simply don’t have the funds to plan your funeral. With low or no deposit plans, we can arrange a plan to fit your monthly budget.

ALL OF OUR PLANS ARE FIXED AT TODAY’S PRICES. Our plans do not require a heath check.

We can explain the difference between pre-paid plans and insurance-based plans. Did you know there are some plans in which you could lose every penny even AFTER you have paid in more that you could ever get back?

Choose Wisely

Aesthetic Practitioner, Nina Taylor-Norris talks to us about the practicalities and what to be mindful of when considering an aesthetic treatment.

The popularity of aesthetics treatments are continuing to soar, with more people opting for non surgical procedures rather than ‘going under the knife’. Treatments are advancing and becoming less of a taboo subject, treatments that were once reserved exclusively for the rich and famous, are now becoming part of beauty regimes in everyday life.

Profile

So Who Do You Choose?

Aesthetic treatments choices can be a minefield, so it is of high importance that individuals research before treatments. Firstly, it is important to know what to look for in a clinic or practitioner. With so many people (medical and non-medical) practicing within the industry, people can often be blinded by practical elements, such as pricing and location.

When choosing an aesthetics practitioner the most important things to be aware of is they should a registered medical professional and fully qualified in Aesthetics. I would recommend to always choose a Doctor, Nurse or Dentist to carry out your treatment, these medical professionals are all regulated with governing bodies such as the GMC (General medical council) NMC (Nursing and Midwifery Council) and GDC (General Dental Council) meaning that they are accountable for their practice, work and patient care. Aesthetic treatments are medical procedures and therefore should be carried out

by a medical professional with detailed knowledge of anatomy, facial and neck arterial structure and the management of potential complications. Always remember that Drs, Nurses and Dentists can hold emergency medications and reversal agents (for dermal fillers) in case of allergic reaction or complication.

Medical professionals will also give you the option of a face to face consultations, this a legality for anti-wrinkle treatment as this is a prescription medication but optional with dermal fillers. This isn’t a hard sell technique, it’s for you to ask the questions that you have and for them to discuss your medical history, needs, expectations and risks, it also helps them tailor your treatment to you, as an individual. It will give you time to decide which treatment option is best for you. Remember that good work isn’t cheap, and cheap work isn’t good.

If you would like to discuss your options or to arrange a free consultation call Nina on 07368 604815.

Put a Spring in Your Step

Feet are often the foundation upon which our entire physical lives are based. Any activity that requires standing or squatting, such as walking, running, and cycling, requires your feet for stability and balance. Despite how important feet are, they are often neglected and ignored because they are so often hidden away under socks and shoes. Taking proper care of your feet will keep them looking clean, soft, and presentable, and it will also help ensure good foot health and overall health. The best way to take care of your feet includes keeping up good hygiene practices, eating right and taking care of your body, and addressing pain and medical issues that could cause problems.

Keep your feet clean.

Wash your feet every day with warm water and a mild cleanser. Even if you don’t shower each day, take a few minutes to wash your feet in a sink or tub. Avoid soaking your feet, however, as this can strip away natural oils.

Washing your feet daily will keep your skin clean and bright, prevent odour, and can prevent corns, infections, ingrown toenails, and calluses.

Exfoliate and scrub.

For softer feet, remove dead skin cells and improve circulation by gently scrubbing your feet every day with a pumice stone. Focus especially on your heels and toes. Don’t scrub too hard, or this will promote a thick and protective layer of skin to grow.

Keep your feet dry and your socks clean.

After you wash your feet, swim, shower, or get your feet wet, thoroughly pat them dry with a clean towel. Be especially careful to dry the area in between your toes. Change your socks every day, and always put on clean socks after washing your feet.

Socks and feet that are dry and clean are the best defence against foot odour.

Moisturize daily.

Keeping your feet moisturized will keep the skin soft and supple. After you wash and dry your feet, massage your favourite moisturizer into the skin before putting on clean socks. Don’t moisturise between your toes. If this area stays damp or wet, it can lead to fungal growth and infection.

Take care of your nails.

Cut your toenails regularly, but never too short. If your nails are too short, dirt and fungus can get in between the skin and nail and cause an infection. Clean under your nails with a nail brush, clean toothbrush, or a rubber or wooden manicure stick.

Avoid ingrown nails by cutting your toenails straight, not at an angle or rounded at the edges. To smooth the edges down after trimming, use an emery board and file gently in one direction only.

Nail polish is acceptable to use on healthy toenails once in a while, but

don’t apply polish to unhealthy nails or to cover up discoloured nails— this could be a sign of infection and covering it with polish will prevent it from clearing up.

Eating for Foot Health

Consume plenty of calcium. Everybody knows that calcium helps to build strong bones, but many people don’t realize that osteoporosis, or bone loss, often shows up first in the feet. No matter your age, your body and feet need between 1,000 and 1,300 mg of calcium per day to stay strong and healthy. Good dietary sources of calcium include: • Dark green vegetables, such as kale, spinach, bok choi and broccoli • Edamame, soybeans, and white beans

• Figs and oranges • Sardines and salmon • Almonds

Get enough vitamin D. V

itamin D is another necessary daily nutrient, in part because it helps our bodies absorb the calcium we need for strong bones and healthy feet. On a daily basis, we need between 400 IU to 1,000 IU of vitamin D. The main source of vitamin D is sunlight, but there are also dietary sources, including: • Mushrooms • Fortified orange juice, almond milk, tofu, breakfast cereal, and oatmeal • Liver • Mackerel and canned tuna If you have any concerns regarding your feet talk to your GP or local Podiatrist or Chiropodist.

WE CAN REMOVE ALL YOUR RUBBISH AT GOOD RESONABLE RATES, • ANY AMOUNTS • ANY SORT. • FREE QUOTE • SPECIAL OAP RATES • LICENSED WASTE CARRIERS
