Shortly after completing my Tourism/Marketing/Business Administration degree at Black Hills State University, I began my career at the Spearfish chamber. During my time as staff, I continued to expand my knowledge of nonprofit organizations through education from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Institute for Organization Management, receiving the IOM certification. This four-year program is designed to teach and enhance the knowledge base of leaders in chamber and association networks. From the moment I walked into the chamber building and experienced the vibrancy of the organization, I became an avid supporter of the vision. At that time I knew I was going to have a long-term relationship with the Spearfish Area Chamber of Commerce. More Expansions May be Needed The educational infrastructure in Spearfish helps attract people to the community, but according to one local administrator, the educational system itself has benefited from those who have relocated here.
“Spearfish is a great place to live and because of that, we are able to attract talented staff for our school district,” said Superintendent Dave Peters. “People like to be a part of a successful system, and our reputation is great. People know that.” The Spearfish School District consists of four schools, 150 certified teachers, 100 non-certified, non-teaching staff, and nearly 2,100 students. Student enrollment had remained fairly stable for the past ten years with an average 1,975 students per year. Over the past year, however, the district has experienced a five percent increase in enrollment.
“We have had 24 new students over the past two months and I think we will continue to see that growing trend throughout the school year, and even into next year,” he said.
While the cause of this year’s increase cannot be precisely identified, Peters said at least half of the new students are directly connected to the Bakken Oil Boom in North Dakota. Affordable housing options have also contributed to the increase. The school structures are feeling the pressure from the increased enrollment. School administration and school board members are considering options for expansion at current schools and reconfiguring what grades are served in each building.
University Influences District
Each year nearly 4,500 traditional and non-traditional students choose Black Hills State University for continued education, which also expands the community’s population. Some students stay for the few short years while they obtain a degree; others – like Landphere – stay for a lifetime. “It’s home – I grew up here,” said Abby Landphere, a third grade teacher at Creekside Elementary and a Spearfish High School graduate. “Spearfish is a small community, but it has lots to offer. You have the opportunities of a big city with a small-town feel.” The Spearfish public school system benefits greatly from having the Black Hills State University campus located in town. Each year the Spearfish School District welcomes 12 to 15 student teachers from the BHSU College of Education. These future teachers spend time shadowing current teachers, honing their teaching skills and working with children in Spearfish.
Creekside Elementary School, the district’s newest school, was completed in 2011; it houses third, fourth, and fifth grades. This is just one of the structures suited for possible expansion in the future. Landphere says the student teachers coming into the district hold the current teachers more accountable. “We have to be able to teach both the kids and future teachers. We have to be on top of our game to effectively teach both types of ‘students’ and help them succeed.”
The Teammates program is another way BHSU works with the public school district to enhance education. Trained, screened BHSU students act as a buddy or teammate to a student in any grade, K-12, to help them socially and educationally. According to Superintendent, Dave Peters, the program is designed to give youth safe, quality adult contact.” The mentoring gained from this program instills confidence in these students and creates stability.
Small Community Supports Education Foundation
In the late 1990s, the school district experienced a brief period of declining enrollment with smaller incoming kindergarten classes than graduating senior classes while the city experienced an increase in total population. The increase was credited to retirees moving into the community.

A decline of this type presented large financial challenges for the school district because at the same time the state of South Dakota was also cutting educational funding. A group of concerned citizens formed the Spearfish Foundation for Public Education in 2001 to combat these financial woes and promote academic programs. “The foundation is a way for teachers to find innovative enrichment programs for their classrooms and receive the funding to carry them out,” said Mary Pochop, Foundation board member and parent of four children enrolled in the Spearfish School District. “We are able to help provide opportunities kids otherwise would not get.”
The Foundation raises funds through an annual endowment campaign and passes them on to teachers. Community residents and businesses donate money to the Foundation to support the goals and mission of the group. Most of the donations are unrestricted, which can be used for any project as deemed by the board; others are restricted for one specific project. This year over $50,000 was awarded for educational enrichment. The funds are used for a wide variety of academic opportunities including healthy school programs, art and math projects, science-related experiments, camps and field trips, drama and theatre experiences, music programs, gifted and talented educational programs, and dozens more. “Some of the funded programs are ongoing and some are one-time programs or projects,” according to Pochop.
Pochop and her husband Jon relocated to Spearfish almost 20 years ago. “We knew Spearfish was a great place and knew it would work to start our family,” she said. “Now, I have a passion for education and being a part of the Foundation board is a way to put into action the things I believe in.” n

When Tony Schavone moved to Spearfish with his wife Alyce in 1957, to teach at Black Hills State University, there were only three paved roads – Highway 16 (Colorado Boulevard/North Main) passing through town, Jackson Boulevard to University Street, and University Street to the college. “We had passed through South Dakota on vacation the year before, and South Dakota was one place we said we would never live,” said Alyce Schavone. But her husband’s position was just temporary, so she agreed to come. And thanks to many forward thinkers like long-time resident and developer, Joe Jorgensen – Spearfish has come a long way in the 55 years Schavone has made it her home.
Growth Provides Opportunities for Investors & Businesses
With a 20 percent overall growth in the past 10 years, according to city officials, the city of Spearfish is constantly expanding, changing and improving. Spearfish has been noted as a progressive community by other cities and businesses because of its ability to provide a high level of service while thinking outside the box to provide amenities for all citizens. “Spearfish has three prominent things that set it apart from other towns: our recreation center, affordable housing initiatives and open space conservation areas,” said Cheryl Johnson, Public Works Administrator. In 2007, a group of investors and developers purchased the old Wal-Mart facility from the company after a new Super Wal-Mart was built on the east side of Spearfish. This group then transferred ownership to the city and renovated the structure into a 71,000 square foot recreation and aquatics center, complete with gym space, walking track, training room, fitness area, indoor batting cages, game room and outdoor water park. “The risk was worth it and now Spearfish has a phenomenal facility for community recreation,” said Joe Jorgensen, investor, land developer and realtor. According to Johnson, Spearfish is the only community nationally to purchase a Wal-Mart facility and remodel it into a structure for community use.
Affordable Housing Options Credited for Growth
People move to Spearfish for a variety of reasons from the beauty, to the climate to the educational and healthcare systems. Affordable housing also draws a large number of families to the community. “Affordable is relative to your financial status, but our housing is affordable compared to many places like Western North Dakota, Colorado and California,” said Johnson.
A group of investors and developers purchased the community’s old Wal-Mart facility in 2007. Ownership was transferred to the city, and the facility was renovated into a 71,000-square-foot recreation and aquatics center. Numerous residential developments are currently being expanded while others are in the planning stages and will begin to see growth in coming years. Two of the city’s most recent developments are The Reserve in Higgins Gulch located west of Spearfish and McGuigan Subdivision located north of Spearfish. “Development happens where land and water/sewer are available. The McGuigan Subdivision and The Reserve are highly attractive because they are ready,” said Jorgenson, developer of the McGuigan Subdivision. Both the Reserve and McGuigan Subdivisions include city water, sewer, garbage and snow removal, as well as police and fire protection. Each development has single family and multi-family residences, as well as open space for parks, walking paths and recreation. Near Exit 17, the Elkhorn Ridge Golf Estates development is currently underway. With scenic views of the Black Hills and the Elkhorn Ridge Golf Club, this community’s lots range average 13,000 square feet in size and are serviced by the city with the same amenities mentioned above. The city administrators and local developers are proud of the open space conservation areas, that Spearfish provides.

Open spaces, recreation paths and parks are just a few proud aspects of the Spearfish community. Both residents and city officials are proud of the continual growth, expansion and renovations made within the community. Throughout the city, residents and visitors have access to 17 city parks, nearly eight miles of recreation/bike paths, two public golf courses, two disc golf courses, one skate park and numerous sports fields and complexes. “I am proudest of the parks and open spaces that we’ve built into each subdivision. Some are walking paths, some are parks and others are just general open spaces,” Jorgensen said. In addition, the city has also expanded the land they own to include more open space conservation areas including the west side of Lookout Mountain and the addition of land near Creekside Elementary school for expanded recreation paths and a park. “The city budgets money every three years to add one to one and half miles of rec paths,” said Johnson. “Rec paths are just as important as roads nowadays, but are very expensive, especially areas with bridges over Spearfish Creek.” “People choose Spearfish because of the quality of life, amenities, scenic beauty and the environment. Those things have always been here and current residents hold the standards high to keep it that way,” said City Planner, Jayna Watson. “We are not an average city. People pay higher attention to the details of architectural standards and ‘up the bar’ for our community.” The growth in Spearfish has been steady over the past decade, which allows government officials to keep up with the changes and services. n www.SpearfishChamber.org

Spearfish serves as
HEALTH CARE HUB
Spearfish’s geographic location has served the community well – and not just for tourism.
For folks living in western South Dakota, northeastern Wyoming and southeastern Montana, quite often Spearfish is the closest option for health care, according to Larry Vietz, chief executive officer of Spearfish Regional Hospital. Patients in this area travel up to and sometimes well over 100 miles to Spearfish for medical care. And while many communities across the country have struggled to simply maintain, much less grow health care options, the industry has thrived in Spearfish.
“We have a great array of health care services that you don’t normally find in a community of this size,” Vietz said.
He cited orthopedic care, MRI imaging, and OB-GYN services as examples. In fact, the only two hospitals with maternity wards in all of western South Dakota are in Spearfish and Rapid City; although other delivery options are available. “To have that variety not only of specialties, but to have choices of physicians within those specialties is attractive,” he said.
Vietz said most medical services are available in Spearfish with the exception of invasive cardio and radiation therapies. But even in those areas, some follow up work is done here. “Spearfish Regional Hospital has experienced tremendous growth in outpatient services,” Vietz said. “Yet the number of beds have remained stable over the years, perhaps even experienced slight growth.” The hospital has been able to increase its number of in-patient beds, as more complex surgeries are being done here, Vietz explained. In the last year alone there has been a 33 percent increase in the volume of orthopedic surgeries done in Spearfish, and Vietz expects that trend to continue.
To accommodate this growth, Spearfish Regional Hospital recently announced a $5 million, 2-story expansion project, which will add almost 7,500 square feet – 6,000 square feet on the main level – and an additional 100 parking spots. The project should near completion at the end of 2013.
The thriving health care industry has benefited Spearfish in many ways. When people come to Spearfish for medical care, they often conduct other business here, as well, said Vietz. “We are a bit of a hub,” he said. “We benefit from people wanting to come here, too.”
Much of today’s success can be attributed to Spearfish Regional Hospital becoming part of the Regional Health system in 2002, Vietz said. “I believe there are great advantages to be in a system that is geographically located,” he said. “That’s what was really developed when Rapid City Regional purchased Banner.
Chiropractic, orthodontists, physical therapists, and general practitioners are just a few of the medical professionals that make Spearfish a health care hub. You benefit from the cooperation that takes place.”
Although the purchase resulted in some duplication, Regional Health did not lay off anyone and instead offered job changes. Regional Health provided a higher level of capital spending for health care in the community then had been done previously. Health care has played a significant role in Spearfish becoming a popular community for retirees.

“When you retire, health care is pretty important,” Larry Miller said. “But for us, it wasn’t just the availability and proximity of health care – it was also about the sort of preventative health measures available like fitness opportunities, swimming and exercises. We’re both bicyclers so we’ve done the path in town routinely and the Mickelson trail a couple of times. We’ve both used chiropractors, and also have our family doctors here. We do all the sort of regular, routine stuff in Spearfish.” Regional Health continues to invest in the area and its future. In 2007, Regional Health purchased a parcel of land in a development being planned at Exit 17 off Interstate 90. Vietz said Regional Health purchased the property just as an option. The hospital did not have specific plans for the property at the time it was purchased and still does not.
Federal health care reform makes it difficult for health care providers to adequately plan for the future, he said. While Spearfish Regional Health will continue to consider new offerings in the community, that is not the ultimate goal. “Our emphasis is on providing a certain level of care,” Vietz said.
Miller said, “Our satisfaction has never diminished. If anything, it has grown. Spearfish offers so many of the diverse things that we were looking for.” n

YOUR BACKYARD PLAYGROUND From hiking, biking and climbing to skiing, snowmobiling and snowshoeing, the Black Hills National Forest offers recreational activities for all ages, stages and interests. “We are lucky enough that we can go skiing, ice climbing and biking all in one day living in the Black Hills,” said Perry Jewett, outdoor enthusiast and Black Hills native. From a very young age, Jewett has taken full advantage of the backyard playground that the Black Hills provides. “Spearfish makes a great training ground for biking and hiking before moving on to larger, more difficult adventures,” Jewett said.
Adventure is Never Far Away
Within a 10-mile radius of Spearfish, residents have easy access to three main recreational areas, according to Bonnie Jones, US Forest Service Recreation Specialist. “Spearfish Canyon, Big Hill and Crow Peak are the main areas that residents and visitors hit for scenic drives, hiking, biking, fishing, horseback riding, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, and cross country skiing,” Jones said.
Spearfish Canyon is a beautiful scenic drive year-round, but nationally known for its beauty when the leaves change in the fall. An observation deck and resting benches allow residents and visitors to view Bridal Veil Falls year-round, while walking paths, decks, and picnic areas allow for time to soak in Roughlock Falls’ scenic beauty. Spearfish Canyon has also been featured in national rock climbing magazines for its well-pocketed routes and overhangs.
Many enjoy fly-fishing in the creeks and streams throughout the canyon and Spearfish area. Spearfish Creek hosts thousands of wild rainbow and brown trout. Anglers can enjoy year-round fishing in this blue ribbon trout stream, named this because of the population of fish per square inch of water. The D.C. Booth Natural Fish Hatchery, located within the city of Spearfish, is one of the oldest hatcheries in the country. It is also an archive and museum of trout history for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife and welcomes over 155,000 visitors annually. McNenny State Fish Hatchery located approximately 10 miles west of Spearfish, breeds, stocks and establishes trout populations in the Black Hills of South Dakota and Wyoming. Big Hill is a non-motorized trailhead about eight miles southwest of Spearfish on Tinton Road. This trailhead accesses 350 miles of snowmobile trails, 16 miles of hiking

Located about four miles up Higgins Gulch, Crow Peak is a beautiful mountain used mainly for moderate to strenuous hiking experiences, but it’s occasionally used for biking and horseback riding. Most notably, Crow Peak is known for its renowned views of the greater Spearfish area.
As an avid rider and someone looking for a challenge, Jewett enjoys spending one day each summer biking up the three crown jewels of Spearfish: Crow Peak, Lookout Mountain and Spearfish Mountain. “It’s a fun and exhilarating ride, with extraordinary scenic views,” Jewett said.

Jewett encourages everyone to get active, no matter the season. “Dabble in something to see if you like it. Go out with someone who is experienced to get training and tips,” says Jewett. “Start slow and enjoy the ride.” Numerous sporting goods retail shops are located in Spearfish. They sell and rent various pieces of equipment including bikes, hiking equipment, rock climbing equipment and apparel. These businesses also provide advice and assistance for those wanting to use the Black Hills for recreation.
Preserving our backyard playground for future generations is very important. US Forest Service District Recreation Staff Officer Scott Haas encourages, “Be informed about the activity you are doing and know the regulations for it. Be educated about the forest and leave it in better shape than when you found it.” One of the best and easiest ways to find out what your Black Hills backyard holds is to take a geo-caching adventure to explore the area. “Geocaching shows you the sites of the area and you can decide for yourself if you want to use the trails more or in different ways. Dakota Five-O
The Dakota Five-0 is a fifty-mile bike race held each year during Labor Day weekend that starts and ends in Spearfish. Since its inception in 2001, the race has grown exponentially. “Selling out the Five-0 this year proves that it is a great event and people have fun,” said organizer Perry Jewett. “We take care of all levels from the pro’s, to the joe’s, to the schmoe’s.”
Just 89 registered for the first race 12 years ago. This year the maximum of 600 cyclists signed up for the race in just three hours on the day registration opened. A waiting list of an additional 100 riders was also made.
The self-imposed maximum is set to keep the quality of the trails high and assure great experiences by all riders. Racers also start in three separate waves to accommodate the large numbers. Cyclists travel from near and far to participate in the race. Less than 200 participants were from the Black Hills area, while other riders drove six to 12 hours for the race. “Riders will be running the race counterclockwise with the theme, The 13th Year is Not a Curse, Ride the Course in Reverse,” says Jewett. Registration opens on April 1, 2013, and the race will be held on September 1, 2013.

DINING OPTIONS
When Bonnie and Bob Dardis opened the McDonald’s on North Avenue in Spearfish in August 1981, they were a little nervous.
“They knew it was a small town for a McDonald’s,” explained their son, Calvin Dardis. “My dad kept his job as a milkman for Brown & Swiss for a year until they knew it was going to work.”
Calvin began working at McDonald’s on the very first day as he attended college. Within a year, the Dardis family was adding on to the restaurant, and 20 years later they sold the Spearfish restaurant to Calvin who remains the owner. The Spearfish restaurant was so successful that the family opened a second McDonald’s in Sturgis in 1986, which is owned and operated by Calvin’s brother, Kelley Dardis.
“The community has been good to us, and hopefully we’ve been good back to the community,” Calvin said about his family’s long tenure with McDonald’s. But McDonald’s wasn’t the first national dining franchise to come to Spearfish. That honor belongs to Dairy Queen. “It was a really big deal when Dairy Queen opened on Jackson,” said Alyce Schavone. Alyce and her husband Tony Schavone came to Spearfish when her husband was offered a temporary teaching position in 1957. Alyce began teaching in Lead in 1958 when Tony’s position became more permanent.
“Since we both worked we went out to eat often,” Alyce said. She recalled wonderful bygone eating establishments such as the Valley Café on the east side of Main, and the Hillcrest Drive Inn, which was a converted Texaco Station from the 1930s that stood where the Hood & Nies building is now on the curve of Colorado Boulevard. “Tony would go out for coffee with the boys at the Canyon Café,” Alyce continued to reminisce. “It stood across

Alyce continued to remember restaurants like Belle’s Steakhouse, housed in the former grocery store (now Killian’s Steakhouse), the restaurant in Kelly’s Motor Inn in the Old Spearfish Hotel, and the Polka Dot.
Long-time Spearfish resident and developer Joe Jorgensen owned the land along Spearfish Creek in the mid1970s when the Pizza Hut Corporation decided to open the first pizza parlor here. In response, he demolished “Joe’s Cabins” and built the building to rent to Pizza Hut. “The community didn’t think the town could support a pizza business, but Pizza Hut corporate thought it
would work because of the college,” Jorgensen said.
At that point, Spearfish was the smallest town with a Pizza Hut, yet it had the largest grand opening ever.
About the same time, Margie’s Supper Club on the northwest edge of town was a “busy, busy place,” according to Alyce Schavone. It was popular with Northern Hills residents and visitors alike. Back then, many locals would choose to stay home three nights each week, due to the Black Hills Passion Play performances, because most restaurants in town were too busy serving tourists. Restaurant choices today continue to be a mix of unique, locally-owned establishments, as well as many national known chains from which to choose.

In 2009 a computer programmer determined the farthest a person could get from a McDonald’s in the United States was on the high plains of northwestern South Dakota. Between the tiny Dakotan hamlets of Meadow and Glad Valley, somewhere between Rapid City-Spearfish-Sturgis and Dickinson-Bismarck and Pierre lies the McFarthest Spot. It is 107 miles to the nearest McDonald’s as the crow flies, or 145 miles by car! The location was recalculated in 2010 and was shifted to the high desert of northwestern Nevada where the nearest McDonalds is 115 miles away as the crow flies.

SPEARFISH THRIVES WITH SMALL BUSINESSES People live in Spearfish for its quality of life, diverse economy, good transportation system, comprehensive health care offerings, and strong educational system, including the university presence.
“We have the beauty of the Black Hills as a background, as well,” said Bryan Walker, executive director of the Spearfish Economic Development Corporation (SEDC). Since 1980, SEDC has worked to create a business environment that welcomes new business, cultivates existing business and supports creative entrepreneurial opportunities.
Employers like TMone aid the community in keeping jobs and residents local.
The community has grown significantly, in part, due to SEDC’s efforts. The population of Spearfish increased more than 40 percent since 1990 from 10,342 to 14,660 residents in a 5-mile radius, with just over 20 percent of that growth occurring in the last decade alone. (Continued on Page 22)

The Spearfish labor market added more than 1,500 new jobs since 2000 as well, which provides a direct economic impact of nearly $50 million annually. SEDC focuses on attracting and growing businesses of all sizes. “The average sized business in Spearfish is just over eight employees,” Walker said. “In the last two or three years, most of the job growth that has occurred has been organic growth – existing businesses adding one, two or three people,” Walker said.
Those smaller expansions often go unnoticed. Yet when Premier Bankcard opened a facility here in 2001, it was hard to miss. The company employed 600 people at its peak. But following federal regulatory changes in the credit card industry, Premier retracted its workforce and ultimately closed its Spearfish location in 2011. It was one of the community’s top five employers at the time. “It was devastating to see Premier Bankcard go, not only because they were a great company that employed a lot of people,” Walker said, “but also because their philosophy was to give back to the community.”
Premier continued with its “give back” philosophy even during and after the closure. The company donated its building to the City of Spearfish and helped identify a potential new occupant and employer for the area in TMone. They also contributed to the United Way of the Northern Hills, benefiting many nonprofit organizations, for another year after closing. “It was a $4 million gift to the city,” Walker said about the building. “But more importantly, it gave the community control of the space and an economic development asset.”
Thanks to Premier’s lead, TMone, one of the nation’s fastest growing business process outsourcing call center companies, moved into the building within six months of the Premier closure. By the end of 2012 and within just one year of opening in Spearfish, TMone had ramped up its employment to about 300 – the same level as Premier at the time of its closure.
Attracting a new occupant so quickly has resulted in a total payroll of $7.5 million staying in the area, Walker said. “Most employee income filters through the community 2.5 times.”
Spearfish is Small Business Friendly
Spearfish was chosen in 2008 as one of the original four sites for the Dakota Rising Fellowship program through the statewide initiative, Dakota Resources, which focuses on rural development. Businesses that have been in operation for at least one year are eligible to apply for the program, which includes a $10,000 grant and provides peer-to-peer networking and advising. “In four years, we have had 10 businesses which have been awarded grants here in the community,” Walker said.
The Spearfish site for the 3-year program is expanding, making all businesses in Lawrence County eligible to apply in 2013 and beyond. Things continue to look positive for Spearfish. Besides population and job growth, wages have also increased. The average household income increased 16 percent last year from $50,187 in 2011 to $58,367 at the end of 2012.

Working with state and local partners, SEDC can provide proposals to qualified businesses seeking to expand or relocate. Construction hit its peak here in 2006 and 2007. But after several down years, the number of building permits issued in 2012 was up significantly over 2011. “We’ve seen a very strong rebound in residential construction here in Spearfish,” Walker said. The number of residential building permits issued more than doubled to 82 in 2012 from just 40 in 2011.
Compared to similar-sized communities throughout the region, Spearfish has historically enjoyed a healthy and robust market within new residential construction, he said. And that trend is continuing. In 2013, Downtown Friday Nights will be held every Friday night from June 7 through August 30. The free weekly activities include top-notch entertainment, vendors, extended store hours from shops on Main Street, food, drink and camaraderie. The event started as “First Fridays” about seven years ago, held only the first Friday of each summer month. In the last three years, it has grown to a weekly summer activity drawing thousands of attendees. “We are getting high quality entertainment and more businesses are staying open late,” said Downtown Business Association President Corey Brost. “It’s a big event, with a small town feel.” The well-attended event is helping the small businesses get more traffic in their stores as well as helping utilize Main Street for a community gathering. “One of the things that has been said to us numerous times by locals is ‘This has become THE thing to do in Spearfish’ and ‘One of the best social events in the entire area’… so it is nice to get that kind of feedback,” commented Mark Kazmer, member of the Downtown Business Association. Chamber Committees
Ambassadors Encourages Chamber membership by welcoming new businesses, participating in membership retention drives and greeting at Business After Hours, Chamber Coffees and Networking Luncheons. Business Education Plans and executes training on specific business topics. Encourages youth mentoring and workforce development. Diplomats The Spearfish Chamber Diplomats consist of past Chamber board members and act as a public relations arm of the organization and host a variety of events.
Governmental Affairs Represents and educates the membership on issues and challenges presented by local, state and federal entities; monitors legislation as it pertains to the Chamber’s mission and business community; makes recommendations to the Chamber board of directors when positions on issues may be required; plans and executes candidate forums, Cracker Barrel sessions, and the trip to Business Day at the Legislature.
Membership Development Creates a sustainable non-dues revenue stream by planning and executing fundraisers; researches and develops revenue-generating products and services. Young Professionals Encourage and enhance our business membership’s young workforce, ages 21-40, through professional development, social networking and volunteering.

Annual Chamber Meeting & Awards The Chamber celebrates business and community success each year with awards and dinner. Awards include Spirit of Spearfish, Friend of the Chamber, Lifetime Achievement Award, Micropolitan Award, Prairie Family Business Excellence Award, and Ambassador of the Year.

Biker Bash Fundraiser The Spearfish Chamber has been revving up revenue for over 18 years with an annual Harley-Davidson motorcycle drawing. This fundraiser party features entertainment, dinner, silent auction, and the grand prize drawing. Each $100 ticket is a chance for the bike and admits two to the Biker Bash! Chamber Seminars Watch the Fish Wrapper and Fish Bytes for these business luncheons, workshops, seminars and other training opportunities. Topics vary from year-to-year based on membership needs and requests.
Community Picnic It’s a sizzling good time as we serve up summer delights by beautiful Spearfish Creek. Watch for this event on a Thursday evening at the end of August. Get tickets in advance or at the picnic.
Educators’ Reception Each year the Spearfish Chamber offers appreciation to the men and women who teach and support our growing workforce.
Leadership Spearfish This comprehensive program develops and encourages potential leaders for our community and region. The schedule consists of multiple sessions on a wide variety of topics. The class also takes an annual trip to Business Day at the Legislature. Northern Hills Business Expo This business to business marketplace has been designed to give Chamber member businesses throughout the Northern Black Hills an opportunity to interact with other businesses and to highlight their products and services. It is also an opportunity for business assistance and advice.
Taste of Spearfish Taste of Spearfish offers an affordable way to sample culinary features from local restaurants, caterers, and food purveyors in a casual atmosphere. Watch for Taste of Spearfish on a Monday evening towards the end of January.
