Bid to ban booze from beach Brodie Cowburn brodie@baysidenews.com.au A MOVE to make Mordialloc Beach a 24 hour alcohol-free zone has been proposed by Kingston Council. The plan to ban all consumption of alcohol at the beach is currently out for public consultation on the Your Kingston Your Say website.
“The summer period sees a significant increase in the use of the Mordialloc foreshore area throughout the Kingston Police Service Area, in particular foreshore areas from Mordialloc to Carrum, to which significant police resources are allocated at the Mordialloc Pier and Peter Scullin Reserve where a number of assaults and public order incidents have occurred,”
the website reads. “Council believes amending the current Mordialloc alcohol-free zone will lead to a safer and improved environment for foreshore users with positive environmental and social implications.” Council says the proposal for a 24 hour ban was put forward following a request from Mordialloc Police.
Alcohol restrictions are currently enforced on the foreshore area from 9pm until 7am. The booze free zone spans from Mordialloc Creek to Epson Road, and from the beach up to the Mordialloc train station An alcohol ban on the Mordialloc foreshore was first implemented in 1999, and was expanded in 2006. 24 hour alcohol bans are currently in op-
eration and enforced at foreshore areas in Chelsea and Carrum. The public consultation period for the proposal opened on 28 October. Feedback will be accepted until 18 November.
