Christmas carols on cards ANYONE looking for a return to a traditional Christmas can head along to Aspendale Presbyterian Church’s Carols on the Lawn now in its fourth year. A free evening of Christmas festivities will include a barbecue, jumping castle and classic carols sung accompanied by a brass band. There will be singing performances by two Aspendale playgroups after the church added a $25,000 playground to the side of the church hall this year. “My kids just love this evening, it is a great way to take the focus off which presents might be coming and get back to the traditional mean-

ing of Christmas,” Reverend Brett Peatman said. Carols on the Lawn will be hosted at Aspendale Presbyterian Church, 63 Station St, Aspendale on Christmas Eve (Sunday 24 December), 6pm with carols at 7pm. A family-friendly service will be held at the church on Christmas Day (Monday 25 December), 9am. Sand works renourish beach SAND renourishment works are underway at Carrum beach this week. At least 5000 cubic metres of sand is being dredged from the mouth of the Patterson River and will be transported from the dredger to Carrum beach through a pipe to be spread by an excavator. The Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) says the sand will initially be a darker colour but will bleach lighter within two weeks of being exposed to sunlight on the beach. Access to sections of the beach in front of the Carrum Surf Lifesaving Club will be limited during the renourishment works. “This project will provide protection to the foreshore vegetation against coastal erosion by the construction of sand fencing and will expand the width to give better beach access and use,” Carrum Labor MP Sonya Kilkenny said.

Fire bans in force FIRE restrictions come into force in Kingston on Monday 18 December. This means fires cannot be lit in the open air without a written permit from the CFA or Kingston Council municipal fire prevention officers. Lighting a fire in the open without a permit can bring a penalty of $22,000 and/or 12 months jail. Barbeques and fires for cooking and warmth do not need a permit, but must be lit in properly constructed fireplaces. I incinerators, chainsaw and lawn mowers, welding and grinding equipment and vehicles that come in contact with vegetation and machinery with internal combustion engines are permitted under certain conditions. A total fire ban declaration means no fires can be lit for the declared district for that day unless there is a specific exemption or special permit issued. This applies irrespective of the Fire Restriction status for a given municipality. Further details at cfa.vic.gov.au/can online.
